Ronald David Driskel, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, died December 7, 2024 at a local healthcare facility. Ron was born September 18, 1944, and spent much of his childhood hunting and fishing with his father, Patrick Driskel, in the Gulf Coast area of Texas.

Ron served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic. His keen mechanical skills served him well as a Lithographer at Silgan Containers where he spent his career.

He married Kathleen Lillian Malroney on May 14, 1969 and they spent the majority of their marriage in St. Joseph, welcoming daughters, Lisa Michelle and Jennifer Colleen.

Ron was an excellent marksman and fisherman, winning many shooting competitions and fishing tournaments throughout his life. He especially enjoyed spending time with a small group of friends.

Ron took pride in serving in many leadership roles within the sheet metal workers union, and was very passionate about politics and football.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Driskel; brother, Kevin Driskel; son-in-law, Jamie Miller; and brother-in-law, John Pickle.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa Driskel Hawxby (Van), and Jennifer Miller; grandchildren, Micheal Gray (Whitney), Mackenzie Gray, and Christian Gray; great grandchildren, Oakleigh Gray, Brynlee Gray, and Ryker Gray; brothers, Michael Driskel (Meredith), Tim Driskel (Britt); in-laws, Tina Pickle, Suzy Crockett (Ed), and Judy Geary (Art), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Max A. Bartram, Sr., 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024.

He was born February 2, 1939 in St. Joseph to Porter and Mary (Brownlee) Bartram.

Max proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1668.

On January 16, 1969, Max married Penni Lynn Enslow, who survives of the home.

Max worked for Hillyard Industries, then for Sherwood Medical for 23 years until it closed. He also was a reserve deputy for the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office for many years.

Max enjoyed fishing in his younger years, and later doing DIY projects at home. He loved time with his grandchildren and was a wonderful grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherry Steele; granddaughter, Jordan Bartram; and brothers, Earl and Chris Bartram.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Penni; children, Christine Cantua (Mark), Billy Bartram (Lynn), Ronnie Bartram (Theresa), Tim Bartram (Kari), and Jennifer Ingram (Jason); 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Hurst; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Christine Lorraine Hernandez, 58, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024.

She was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri to Beverly (Dick) and Paul Bennett on September 6, 1966.

Christine was a cherished sister and friend, who passed away surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Christine held a lifelong dedication to her community, exemplified by her work as a Detention Aide at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Christine was a beacon of courage, intelligence, and passion, she was deeply private but shared her love openly with her family. Her laughter often filled the room during Chiefs games, and her fondness for cats was well-known among her loved ones. Christine's strong, independent spirit lifted others even amidst life's challenges. Her loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege to stand by her side in life.

She is survived by her sister, Teresa (Otto) Gilpin, and her brothers, Mike Turner and Ben Sharp, five nephews and nieces, and 15 grand-nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Suzanne M. Eiman, 95, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024.

She was born November 9, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri to Walter and Mary (Baker) Humphrey. Suzanne grew up in Kansas City and graduated with a degree in Nursing from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1956.

Suzanne married John E. Umstead in 1957 and the couple moved to the St. Joseph area where they raised their family. Suzanne worked as an RN and also did bookkeeping. John preceded her in death in 1982.

In 1991, Suzanne married Louis E. Eiman, Jr. The couple ran the Eiman family farm until retiring and then enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Louis preceded her in death in 2010.

Suzanne loved to cook, especially for big Thanksgiving dinners for the family. She also enjoyed tending to her garden and loved her pets, Beau and Muffin.

She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church and later Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She also made prayer quilts at the Zion United Church of Christ, which Louis attended.

Suzanne was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and the rock who held the family together. Her family was grateful for gathering to see her on one last Thanksgiving.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and son, Frank Umstead.

Survivors include her children, Christopher Umstead (Stacy), Mary Rappaport (Gregg), and Bill Umstead (Debbie); daughter-in-law, Laura Umstead; grandchildren, Matthew (Dana), Michael (Elizabeth), John, Mark, and Katie (Danny); and great-grandson, Devon.

He was born on March 7, 1959 to Clayton and Nancy (Gaumer) Young in Peoria, Illinois.

Clayton married Jo Ann Beever and lived in Vermont, Illinois. He later moved to Smithville, Ridgely and in 2010 moved to Edgerton.

He worked as a nurse’s aid and store clerk for several years.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Larry Dale Hohimer, of Ferrelview, MO passed away December 5, 2024.

He was born on July 24, 1943, to Glenn and Nina M. (Wright) Hohimer in Triplett, MO. Larry graduated from Park Hill High School in 1961.

On October 19, 1963, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Von dem Fange. After their marriage they made their home in Ferrelview.

Larry retired from GM Motors in Kansas City, KS. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Larry enjoyed tinkering with old cars and lawnmowers, reading, watching old western movies and was an avid NASCAR fan. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Nina Hohimer and an infant sister.

Larry is survived by his wife Mary Hohimer; daughters Sheryl Relyea and husband Denny and Shawn Roetman and husband Tony; grandchildren Tyler (Beth), Aaron, Scott and Emily (Arin); great-grandchildren Kian and Evelyn; brothers Gary (Jean) Hohimer and Ronnie (Syndi) Hohimer; sisters Glenda Mynatt, Diann (Steve) Harralson, Connie Laterra and Rita Benskin; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Victor Clyde “Chuck” Poe, 76, of St. Joseph, MO passed away on December 7, 2024, from a long battle with lung cancer.

Chuck was born on April 16, 1948, in St. Joseph, MO to Victor and Jessie Poe. He attended Christian Brother and Central High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served four years as a Medic during Vietnam.

He married Mary Anderson in 1966 and of that marriage a son was born, Tracy Poe. He later married Linda (Kizior) Poe in the early 70’s and they had a daughter, Kariane (Poe) Pierce. Even though they divorced, Linda was still the significant other in his life.

He was employed by Crouch Bros Truck Lines for a time before he joined and worked in the pipefitter trade just as his father did with Local Pipefitters Union, Local 45 for the next 40 years wherein he retired from.

Chuck didn’t know a stranger and could be counted on for great conversation and stories over coffee. One of his favorite places was Farris’s Truck Stop where he would meet regularly to chat with friends.

He is survived by his son, Tracy Poe, Council Bluffs, IA; daughter, Kariane (Chad) Pierce, Troy, KS; sister, Dolores (Darold) Dorsey, Leeton, MO; grandsons, Breyden Pierce and Rhett Pierce, granddaughter, Tabatha (Harry) Ashburn; great grandchildren, Jessi Pierce, Riley, Archer and Scarlet Ashburn, niece, Kelly Copeland and nephew, Eli Dorsey and many good friends.

Leah Neff, 80, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the Wathena Nursing &amp; Rehabilitation Center.

Leah was born on September 9, 1944, in Oregon, Missouri to Donald and Lorene (Grimes) Radley.

She worked as a nurse’s aid and medical tech.

Leah married James Neff on May 29, 1988, in Oregon, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors; children, Sherry Roecker, Calvin Matthews, Lora Pierson and Angela Wilson. Sister, Donna Jean Catterson. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Holly Michelle Dewar, 44, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, December 6, 2024 at her home following a hard fought battle with cancer. She was born January 29, 1980 in St. Joseph, daughter of Susan (Robbins) and Leslie Kunzler. 

She graduated from Benton High School, class of 1998. On September 15, 2001, she married Jeffery Dewar in St. Joseph . Holly began her career in Insurance at American Family Insurance. She later joined Philadelphia Insurance Companies, where she was working up until her illness. Holly loved spending time with her friends and family. She enjoyed going on float trips and shopping. 

Holly was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Joseph and Wilma Robbins and paternal grandfather, Dee Kunzler.

She was born January 29, 1980 in St. Joseph, daughter of Susan (Robbins) and Leslie Kunzler. She graduated from Benton High School, class of 1998. On September 15, 2001, she married Jeffery Dewar in St. Joseph . Holly began her career in Insurance at American Family Insurance. She later joined Philadelphia Insurance Companies, where she was working up until her illness. Holly loved spending time with her friends and family. She enjoyed going on float trips and shopping. Holly was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Joseph and Wilma Robbins and paternal grandfather, Dee Kunzler. Laura Marie (Smith) Poet, 57, of St. Joseph, Missouri, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, nana, and friend, went to be with Jesus on December 5, 2024 after a long battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma. Diagnosed originally with what was thought to be breast cancer in 2011, family and friends are encouraged to think of the last thirteen years as “bonus” years.

Laura was born February 9, 1967, in Joplin, Missouri, to Robert Eugene and Myra Lou (Balding) Smith and spent her childhood and youth in Salina and Hays, KS, and Loveland and Longmont, CO. She attended Hays High School and graduated from Skyline High School in Longmont in 1985. She attended Colorado State University and Ottawa University (KS) before marrying her high school sweetheart, Jeffrey Lawrence Poet, on July 5, 1987, on his parents’ farm outside of Longmont, devoting the rest of her life to being a wife and mother.

Laura is preceded in death by her father Robert, her maternal grandparents Edgar and Mildred (Wright) Balding of Arvada, CO, and her paternal grandparents Harold and Helen (Erwin) Smith of Newcastle, IN. She is survived by her husband, Jeff, of the home, and her eight children and eight grandchildren: Jessica Poet and Luka of St. Joseph; Liesl (Orion) Diehl and Savannah, Ophelia, and Gwenivere of Panama City Beach, FL; Andrew (Caitlyn) Poet and Elizabeth and Leo of Boonville, MO; Moriah (Noah) Gibler and Adelyn and Eleanor of Kaycee, WY; Sara (Connor) Stewart of Dearborn, MO; Micah (Libby) Poet of St. Joseph; Jacob Poet and Shiloh Poet, of the home. She is also survived by her mother Myra Smith of St. Joseph, her sister Lanna (Mark) Trembath of Troy, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Laura invested her time and energy into her relationships with her family and friends. She homeschooled all eight of her kids over a continuous span of more than 30 years. She was active in Sunday School and church at several churches over the course of her life and studied the Bible on her own each morning and with groups of friends. She loved her Lord Jesus and deeply desired for others, especially her children and grandchildren, to know and trust Him as well.

Over the years, Laura sewed many outfits for kids and grandkids and made many quilts, including quilts for special events like weddings and births. Each quilt was tailored to the would-be recipient, reflecting the care and love that Laura had for the person. Other hobbies and pastimes included reading, playing games with family, watching Jeopardy, photography and scrapbooking, running, disc golf (begun during the pandemic), and traveling. She traveled to Europe on three occasions, visited 45 of the 48 contiguous United States, enjoyed a multi-generational trip to Hawaii, and took a cruise to the Bahamas with Jeff for their 30th anniversary.

Laura’s spirit is now with Jesus in Heaven. Her body will be cremated. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Joseph, MO, on Monday, December 9 at 2:00 with a visitation/reception time with family to immediately follow. Dorothy Wilmina (Agnor) Kurtz was born on October 24, 1926 in Xenia, Ohio. She was one of four children of Herman and Alma (Carman) Agnor. &nbsp;Dorothy graduated from Central High School, Xenia, Ohio and attended Ozark Bible College for two years.

On August 22, 1952 she married Herbert Kurtz in Xenia. They celebrated over 54 years of marriage before his death on March 15, 2007.&nbsp;

Dorothy was a typical farm wife of her generation, and served as the pianist at New Point Christian Church for many years. She also taught Sunday school and Bible school classes there. &nbsp;She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and caring for her grandchildren, and served as “Prayer Warrior” for her entire family.

After Herbert’s death she sold the farm and moved to Oregon. Dorothy volunteered at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri, the Oregon Care Center, and Hope House in Forest City.&nbsp;

Dorothy passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at a Mound City, Missouri care center.&nbsp;

She was also preceded in death by two children, Eva Lynn Kurtz and Lyle Thomas “Tom” Kurtz; brothers-in-law, Willard Delaney, Bill Duncan, Emmett and Ivan Kurtz, and George Mohler; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Kurtz,&nbsp;Emma Lou Kurtz, and Verlene Mohler.

Kerry graduated from Benton High School Class of 1964 and kept in close contact with her classmates and friends.&nbsp; Kerry married Richard Clampitt in 1965 and to this union two daughters were born. She was an animal lover, she rescued and cared for many dogs and cats over the years.&nbsp; Kerry was Postmaster at Amity, Missouri Post Office and retired with over 20 years of service.&nbsp; She had a “Green Thumb” and could grow the most beautiful flowers and was even featured in&nbsp;St Joseph NewsPress&nbsp;with her flower garden on&nbsp;11th Street.&nbsp; In 1986 she married LaVerne Berry until his passing in 2014 and later her High School sweetheart Robert Michael (Mike) Erickson in 2016.&nbsp;She enjoyed living on the farm in Amity and was a member of Amity United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Richard Clampitt, LaVerne Berry (2014), and Mike Erickson (2020); and brother, Larry Lynn Pilgram.

David Jason Coburn, Sr., 53, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024.

He was born on July 27, 1971, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to David Mitchell and Judy Lynn (Tapee) Geiler.

He was proud of having attended Lafayette High School in St. Joseph.

David was a devoted member of the Methodist faith, gleaning strength and solace from his beliefs. His passion for music, fondness for fishing, and cherished moments spent with loved ones were the cornerstones of his recreation. These simple joys were reflections of a life richly lived.

He is survived by his mother, Judy (Jerry) Geiler; his son, David Coburn, Jr.; sisters Joyce Coburn and Jennifer Geiler; as well as some nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and several friends. David steps into eternity preceded in death by his grandparents Jack and Joyce Tapee, his cousins Sharon, Steve, and Michelle, his uncle’s Joe and Jerry Tapee.

Sherwin “Jet” Goo, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024.

He was born July 21, 1940 in China to Norman and Gwen Goo.

Sherwin married Annie Wong Leong on November 20, 1965. She survives of the home.

He was a glazier by trade and worked on many skyscrapers in Hawaii before moving stateside.

In his younger years, Sherwin enjoyed boating, then later traveling through the United States in his RV.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gordon Goo.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Goo; daughter, Shareann Hendrix (Scott) of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Calvin, Celeste, Charlie and Amanda Hendrix; siblings, Paul Goo of Cerritas, California, Charlotte Cordes of Kailua, Hawaii, Melvin Goo of Aiea, Hawaii, Hilton Goo and Jerry Goo, both of Lakewood, California.

Debbie Nelson (Mathers), 69, Clinton Township, Michigan, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024.

She was born January 6, 1955 in Salina, Kansas at the Smoky Hill Air Force Base to Bobby and Betty (Hixson) Nelson.

Debbie loved the Lord and was on numerous prayer chains.

Music was her soul, which she expressed when she and her first husband Bruce performed with Daddy and the Warbucks.

Debbie was a beautician with licenses in both Missouri and Michigan and was owner/operator of her own shop in Warren, Michigan.

After returning to St. Joseph, Debbie was owner/operator of Yellow Cab Co. and a limo service. She later relocated to Michigan with her limo service, then worked for pharmaceutical company before retiring.

In retirement, Debbie’s true spirit came alive as she traveled extensively across the country.

An outgoing person who knew no strangers, Debbie’s heart, generosity and caring were well known. She would be there for anyone in need and also was a foster parent to many kids in Michigan. This caring extended to the four-legged companions in her life, especially her beloved dog, Fatima, whom she adored.

Most of all, Debbie was a loyal, loving sister to Tanya, who considered Debbie her “2nd mother.”

She was preceded in death by her father; brothers, Ronnie Polkingharn and Todd Nelson, Sr.; nephew, Todd Nelson, Jr.; and grandmother, Betty “Nan” Whitaker.

Survivors include her mother, Betty Hillson (Dave); her sons, Marshall Mathers III, and Nathan K. Mathers (Ashley); grandchildren, Haley Jade Mathers and spouse, Alania Mathers and spouse, Whitney Mathers, Liam Mathers and Carter Mathers; siblings, Steven Robert Nelson (Angie), Tanya DeWeese (Leonard); numerous nieces and nephews, including Johnathan Winters (Amy), Nicole Nelson, Michelle Ray, Jeremy Schmitt, and Jacob Schmitt.

She was never one to sit still, exhibiting a love for life through her participation in the Special Olympics as an avid bowler and other activities. Her passion also extended to vacations and cheering for the Chiefs Football team.She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alfred Cummings, Jr.; sister, Nancy Cummings; half-siblings, Nolan Didlo, Betty June Fitzpatrick, and Billy Cummings.Survivors include her siblings, Leveda White (Richard), Mary Ramos, Lisa Cummings, and Robert Cummings, as well as her half-siblings Connie White (Ron), Ernest Didlo (Janet), and Homer Didlo.
