William “Bill” Huff, 71, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022.

He was born July 1, 1951 in St. Joseph and graduated from Benton High School in 1970.

Bill married Sandra Madinger in 1979. They shared 43 years together. She survives of the home.

He worked for Robidoux Hotel, St. Joseph Auto Parts, and Bumper to Bumper.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Huff; mother, Shirley Ingram; and brother, Gregory.

Survivors include son, Joey Huff; brother, Eddie Huff; sisters, Cora Seery, Cathy Huff, Christy Adkins, and Pam Shadduck; stepmom, Renia Huff; nieces and nephews.

Natural Farewell under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory. Per Bill’s wishes, there will be no services. Friends and family are welcome to come by the house on Saturday, October 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. to remember him.

Allan E. Hicks, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022.

He was born September 14, 1939 to Clarence and Mary(Baker)Hicks in Meadville, Missouri.

Allan retired from the Saint Joseph Police Department where he served for over thirty years before serving with the Missouri Juvenile Services. Later, he a was a school bus driver for the Savannah School District.

Allan enjoyed spending time with his family, was an avid golfer, and was the biggest Missouri Tiger fan of all time. For many years, he played fastpitch softball in St. Joseph and the surrounding area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jeff and Jerry Hicks.

Survivors include daughters, Judie Richey (David), and Jacquie Hicks (Tim); grandchildren, Lyndi, Mindy, Claire, Stuart, Korbin, and Keaton; siblings, Gary Hicks, Donna Stuver, Becci Goodwin, Cindi Ware, Ted Hicks, Jenny Eller and Joni Eller; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Fred W. Grothe, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022.

He was born February 10, 1937 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Frederick C. and Delora (Flemming) Grothe. He graduated from Sutton, Nebraska, High School and worked on a farm before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served his country for four years as an electrician.

Fred married Jeannine A. McElhaney on May 5, 1963, and they shared nearly 6o years together. She survives of the home.

After the service, Fred attended trade school to finish his electrician training and earn certification. He worked as an electrician for 35 years, first in Lincoln, Nebraska, then back in his hometown of Sutton. He then was an over-the-road truck driver for 11 years. He and Jeannine later moved to St. Joseph, where Fred worked in security and retired.

Fred enjoyed football, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He also liked growing tomatoes and roses, but not at the same time. Cribbage was his favorite game and was the center of family game nights.

He was an incredibly gregarious man with a terrible sense of fashion – always wearing his measuring-tape suspenders with every outfit.

Fred was a member of New Life Cathedral in St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janet Fillman; and brother-in-law, Charles Fillman.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannine; children, Tracy Grimm (Robert), Fritz Grothe (Sarah Miller), and Jennifer Sanders (Brian); eight grandchildren; and his beloved dogs, Bogey, Rusty and Freckles.

Dorathea Polsky, 98, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

She was born February 6, 1924 in Rockford, Illinois to Charles and Ruth (Levin) Pinko. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Milwaukee.

Dorathea married Simon Polsky on September 6, 1953. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2002.

She was a teacher in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, School District for seven years and the St. Joseph School District for three years.

Dorathea was very involved in the St. Joseph Community. She was a past president of Y-Women and the League of Women Voters, delivered Meals on Wheels, was an advocate for abused women, and volunteered for the Artist in the School Program. Dorathea also was a past vice president of the Democratic Women’s Club and the Performing Arts Association as well as past board member of the St. Joseph Historical Society, and numerous other organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Simon; her parents; and sister, Rachel Mishlove.

Survivors include children, Bruce Polsky (Sandy), Wendy Polsky, and Douglas Polsky (Colleen); two grandchildren, Allison Ledford (John), and Benjamin Wheeler; one grandson, John Denton Ledford; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Roland Eugene Nuss, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at his 
home. He was born June 29, 1945, in St. Joseph, MO, to Roland B. and 
Henrietta L. (Gagelman) Nuss.

Roland graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963 and received his
 bachelors in Business from Fort Hays State University in 1967. Roland 
worked as a buyer for Dillons, supervisor for Kwik Shop, and in sales at
 Collins Bus and Cabinet Connections. He loved the mountains, his 
Tuesday morning coffee group, Tuesday night tennis group, watching 
sports of all kinds – especially K-State and Salthawk sports - with 
Rita, and spending time with his family most of all. Roland was a 
long-time devoted member of Eastwood Church of Christ where he had 
served as a deacon.

On June 5, 1971, Roland married Rita K. Woods, in Dodge City. She survives.

Also surviving are: his daughters, Melissa Thorne (Gavin) of Windsor,
 CO, Jennifer Farr (Jamie) of Junction City; and grandchildren, Grady 
and Kinley Thorne and Mason and Colin Farr.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2022, at Eastwood
 Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum St., Hutchinson, with ministers Wayne 
DeWindt and Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to
 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m., with the family present to receive 
friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Cremation will follow with a private family scattering in his beloved mountains at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Roland’s name to Michael J. Fox Foundation 
for Parkinson’s Research, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, 
Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Deeis (Dee) Duttweiler, 96, Atchison passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

Masonic services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, October 17, 2022, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS, followed by funeral services with Rev. Craig Lantz officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Dee was born July 1, 1926, in Leavenworth, KS, to the late Fred and Irena (Macy) Duttweiler. His father worked for Burlington Railroad and was transferred to Atchison when Dee was five years old. 

Dee attended Franklin Grade School and Atchison High School where he played the trumpet in the high school band and orchestra. Dee attended Benedictine College part time for six years earning a degree in Business Administration, then attended Findley Engineering College, Kansas City, studying Electrical Engineering. He was a partner in a trailer rental business in St. Joseph, MO. He started his own retail business, public address sound business, rental property, owned and operated the Sugar Cone Ice Cream store with his wife Eunice, worked in radio stations earning a Federal First-Class license to work on radio transmitters, and also worked as an announcer and engineer. Dee’s hobby job was as a projectionist in indoor and outdoor drive-in theaters. He also learned to fly light airplanes in 1953, had his private pilot’s licenses and owned several airplanes, selling the last one in 1999. He also collected model railroad trains.

Dee had been a Mason over 65 years, he was a member and Past Master of the Active Masonic Lodge # 158, Atchison, and was a Past Worthy Patron many times for the Martha Washington Chapter $ 215 Order of Eastern Star, member of Washington Chapter # 1 and #2, and Washington Commandery #2, Atchison. He had served as head of all local York rite bodies. He served the State of Kansas as Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of KS, Grand Illustrious Master of Cryptic Masons of Kansas, and Past Grand Commander of Knights Templar of Kansas. He was a member of York Rite College and was awarded the Purple Cross, was honored to earn the Scottish Rite Shrine, 33rd degree, belonged to Abdallah Shrine, Kansas City, Ancient Toltec Rite, Topeka Chapter of Kansas. He was Past Grand Organist OF Grand Chapter of Kansas Order of Eastern Star and Past Grand Organist for the Grand Lodge of Kansas, for the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of USA for one year and Grand Organist for all Kansas York Rite. He was a member of the Red Cross of Considine Topeka, KS and dual member in St. Joseph, MO and Kansas City, KS Columbia Preceptory Yeoman of York, MO. He was also a life member of all York Bodies and General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons.

Dee and Eunice traveled all over the state of Kansas. In 1997 they traveled with the Knight Templars to the Holy Land, Israel, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. In 2007 they traveled to England, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy with his nephew. They traveled to Colorado Springs many times, Washington DC, toured the White House, Florida, New Orleans, Memphis TN, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas and several other States. Dee was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison and served on the Church Council several times.

On February 19, 1956, Dee married Eunice Gaul at Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison, KS. She preceded him on June 26, 2022. Survivors include nieces and nephews. 

Dee was preceded by his parents, mother and father-in-law Herman and Martha Gaul, sisters-in-law Lorene Rawles and Eursala Gaul, brothers in law, Norman and Edgar Gaul.

 and E. Lorene (Amos) Bonnet on October 9, 1948 in Saint Joseph, MO.

She was a graduate of Benton High School and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother during her life.

On May 23, 1966, she married Michael V. Pitts, in Omaha, NE.&nbsp; They celebrated 56 years of a loving marriage.

Ricky enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, golfing, and fishing. Ricky was a Benton High School graduate, their first ever State Wrestling champion, and still took an active role in supporting the team.

He was kind to people and liked to do whatever he could to help others. Ricky is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bessie Timmons; brother, Mike Timmons; sister, Donna McDowell; niece, Mandy Timmons; and his beloved wife, Deborah Timmons.

Alyce Mae Stephenson, 79, Higginsville, Missouri passed away Friday, October 7, 2022.

She was born March 2, 1943 to Virgil and Dorothy (Hutchcraft) Young in King City, Missouri.

Alyce married Robert “Bob” Stephenson on April 7, 1964 in Grant City, Missouri. He survives of the home.

She retired after 30 years as the medical records clerk for the Higginsville Habilitation Center. She was adored by both residents and staff.

Alyce Mae Stephenson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt with a heart of gold. Her smile was infectious. She was very social and enriched the lives of the family and friends who knew her. Alyce always put others before herself. She was a huge empath. One way she gave back was to be regular blood donor until her stroke in 2014.

She loved to tend to her many gorgeous flower gardens. She was complimented all the time on how lush and beautiful her flowers were. The biggest part of her heart belonged to her granddaughter Brianna Alycen.

Alyce is survived by her husband of 61 years; son, Robert B. Stephenson, Jr. (Melissa)of Dearborn, Missouri; daughter, Lena Zeller of Higginsville, Missouri; only grandchild, Brianna Alycen Richards (Jake)of Independence, Missouri.

Virginia Susan Phillippe, 98, Cosby, Missouri, passed away Friday, October 7, 2022.

She was born September 30, 1924 in Whiting, Kansas, to Floyd and Bertha (Browning) Persons. Her family moved to St. Joseph, where Virginia graduated from Pickett High School. She then worked in the office at Swift and Co.

Virginia married Otha Wesley Phillippe on February 6, 1943. He preceded her in death on July 20, 2005.

While many knew her from her 30-plus years working at the Avenue City Grocery &amp; Oil Co., Virginia was first and foremost a farm wife and homemaker.

Virginia was a sweet, kind, generous lady, who also was a smart and tough businesswoman, working on the farm alongside Otha then keeping it going after he passed. She also had a sense of humor and adventure, going on many trips with Otha and long road trips with her nieces and great-nieces, tooling around the farm on a four-wheeler, and going to dances on Saturday nights.

She was a longtime member of Hope United Church of Christ in Cosby, where she served the Lord and strengthened her faith.

All of us who were privileged to know this incredible lady will forever be grateful she was in our lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Otha; her parents; sister, Louise Dyche; and brother, Eugene Persons.

She is survived by her son, James “Jim” Phillippe (Kay); two grandchildren, Eric Phillippe (Janelle) and Jeremy Phillippe; great-grandchildren, Joselyn and Wesley Phillippe, Dalton Davis, and Kenzie Lopez; numerous nieces and nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Lynda Marie (Schultz) Landram, age 67, cherished mother passed away in her home on October 2, 2022, in Galveston, Texas. She was born April 1, 1955, in Leavenworth, Kansas to Andrew and Jacqueline Schultz Jr. Lynda grew up traveling the world with her family as her father was a proud service member of the Marine Corps &amp; Air Force.

Lynda graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School in 1973. Lynda was married to her soulmate and best friend, Charles Scott Landram IV (originally of Houston, Tx) in 1980. They had two children, Joshua and Ashlee Landram they raised in Savannah, Missouri. Lynda and Charles moved to be near their children and granddaughter to Galveston, Tx in 2016. Shortly after the move, she lost her husband to a battle with cancer.

Lynda was kind and loved to make memories with her children and granddaughter. She was passionate about moving to Galveston, Tx and was able to make that dream a reality. She was also a very dedicated Kansas City Chiefs fan and an avid animal lover.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Jacqueline Schultz Jr and her beloved husband, Charles Scott Landram IV.

She is survived by her son, Joshua Landram (Houston, Tx); daughter, Ashlee Landram-Oliver and husband (Galveston, Tx); granddaughter, Makenzie Landram (Cypress, Tx); Brother Andrew Schultz III, (Houston, Tx); and Sister Deborah Weissbeck (Topeka, Ks)

She was born December 14, 1934 in Stanberry, Missouri to Sylvester and Lena (Mozingo) Puckett.

Anna married Ivan Wayne Thompson on May 14, 1951. He preceded her in death on December 15, 2003.

She worked as a psychiatric aide for the State Hospital in St. Joseph for 25 years.

Anna enjoyed her flower garden, birdwatching, cooking family dinners, crocheting, and playing cards. She had a great love for her family, and anyone who stopped by was welcome and fed.

She was a longtime member of Sparta United Methodist Church.

Anna was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Ivan; her parents; and seven siblings.

He was born May 29, 1940 in Lawndale, North Carolina to Lenard and Inez (Ledford) Lingerfelt.

Harris married Judy Schnebly-Pulliam on December 31, 1961. She survives of the home.

He was a barber for 45 years, first for several barbershops, then owning/operating his own shop, the Hair Gallery. He also owned and operated Classic Photography, which specialized in wedding photography.

Harris loved boating, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks. He also enjoyed RC airplanes. A very social person, he never knew a stranger. He enjoyed war movies and westerns, especially John Wayne movies. He loved music and had an impressive Elvis collection.

Harris formerly attended St. Paul United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy; children, Michael Lingerfelt and Chris Crockett (Tom); and grandson, Chance Saliger.

Nancy (Hopper) Hartell, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, October 3, 2022.

She was born June 8, 1950 in Springfield, Missouri, to Herschel and Marion (Benrud) Hopper.

Nancy married Larry D. Hartell on July 25, 1991. He survives of the home.

She was a registered nurse at Mosaic Life Care for 43 years. Her nursing co-workers were like extended family to her.

Always supportive of her children and their endeavors, Nancy’s No. 1 priority was her grandchildren. She truly went above and beyond for them.

Nancy (Hopper) Hartell 1950 - 2022

Duane Allen Alexander, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, died Wednesday, October 5, 2022, peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

He was born September 30, 1934, to Lyle and Vivian Alexander in Spencer, Iowa. He attended Terril High School in Terril, Iowa, and after graduation, studied TV repair.

He served in the Marine Corp from 1954 to 1957 in the Korean War, as a morse code operator, and was discharged as a corporal.

He met his love, Rita C. Albers, in Minneapolis, Minnesota and they married on July 11, 1959. She passed away July 12, 2013.

Duane then worked at Braniff Air from 1959 to 1964 and Hamms Brewery from 1964 to 1966. He worked at TWA for 32 years as an avionics crew chief in the hangar at the overhaul base. He retired from TWA/American Airlines in 1997.

After retirement, he built an RV8 recreational airplane in his garage and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association for many years.

He loved horseback riding with his horses named Lightning and Sam, flying to many different locations in the country, and spending time with family at the cabin at Truman Lake.

Survivors include daughters, Kim Wilcoxson, St. Joseph, Missouri, Debbie Alexander, Cosby, Missouri, Sherrie (Ben) Groom, Gower, Missouri; one grandson, Joseph (Tiffany) Giles, Clarksdale, Missouri; one great grandson, William Lee Giles, two great granddaughters, Emma Clare Giles and Ellie Rachele Giles; two sisters, Dianne (Cecil) Roberts, Houston, Texas, Shirley Olson, Spirit Lake, Iowa; one brother, Curtis (Linda) Alexander, Sequim, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doug was born on March 25, 1957, in Hiawatha, Kansas to Teddie and Alice Trueblood.

He was a truckdriver for Consolidated Freight, St. Joseph Express and First Fleet. His loves were family, hunting, fishing, and beer.

Doug married Cathy Liechti on January 22, 1977, in Wathena, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Vickie Hockaday.

Jo Ann Pinkston passed away Sunday, September 25th, 2022. She was one of five children, born to Henry and Gertrude Stoever in New Jersey on February 16th, 1951 in Long Branch, New Jersey.

She had three children of her own – Lisa Hayes, Dustin Olin, and Nick Olin. She also had numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Her personality was larger than life, and anyone that knew her grew quickly attached to her. She was a fiercely devoted friend and a hard worker. She loved animals, especially horses. Her stories were often amusing, and she could fill a book with her truck stop experiences. She had a low tolerance for stupidity, which also made for good stories.

Her smile was contagious. She had a great appreciation for those serving in the military and first responders, police and firemen. She loved her country and was a true patriot.

She leaves behind many friends and family, all of whom loved her, including her sister Janice Odom (Bruce) of Weatherford, Texas, brother Raymond Stoever (Janeen) of West Des Moines, Iowa, sister Nancy Wilson of Camden Point, Missouri, and brother Robert Stoever of St. Joseph, Missouri. She will be greatly missed.

On September 27, 2022, our beloved LaTasha La’Cole completed her journey. She is now with our Lord and Savior.

LaTasha was born on October 5, 1982. She was the daughter of James and Virginia Johnson, Paul and Lily Thaxton.

LaTasha was a member of New Life Baptist Church of Tracy, Missouri. She gave her life to Christ at an early age.

LaTasha graduated from Central High School in 2001. She attended Truman State University in Kirksville. She completed her education at Missouri Western State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in science and criminal justice. She graduated magna cum laude.

LaTasha worked for 12 years for the State of Missouri as a Youth Specialist at Riverbend Treatment Center. LaTasha also worked at the Division of Youth Services. She accomplished her education and work history with chronic health problems.

LaTasha La’Cole was a kind and loving person. To know her was to love her.

The family would like give a special thank you to Dr. Abbas, Dr. Brecheisen, and the DaVita staff for all their loving care they provided.

She is survived by her parents; siblings, Heidi Thaxton and Champ Thaxton of Waterloo, Iowa, Jodie Bennett, Annette Bonnett, Antoine Johnson, Mark Johnson, Michael Cleggett, Jonathan Thaxton, Stephan Cleggett, Terrance and Natrice Neal of Dallas, Texas, Angela Leach of Gadsden, Alabama; her special adopted son, Thomas Armstrong; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Oct. 6th, 2022, at the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. Visitation with family will be from 12:30 until 1:30 pm on Thursday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to Animal Rescue or the no kill animal shelter and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Charles was born on April 14, 1947, in Smithville, MO the son of Raymond and Martha (Bryan) Keefhaver. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1965. He worked as a supervisor for TWA/ American Airlines from Feb. 1967- Dec 2008. Charles was an avid baseball fan, especially the KC “A’s”, listening to the Beatles music, movies and period trivia. He was married to Connie Lee Rose on Sept. 25, 1966. She preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 2013. He was also preceded in death by a son Eric Keefhaver, and a brother Bryan Keefhaver. Survivors include two sons Bryan (Ella) Keefhaver, Claremore, OK and Troy Keefhaver, Claremore, OK, and a step grandson Jayson.

Elaine Louise (Zeltwanger) Walter, 99, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022.&nbsp;

Elaine was born on December 1, 1922 in Troy, Kansas to Albert and Ruby (Lloyd) Zeltwanger.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a lifelong resident of Troy, Wathena area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elaine was a member of the Burr Oak Baptist Church and when it closed she became a member of the First Baptist Church in Wathena.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was also a member of the Maranatha Class at the church and the American Baptist Women (ABW).&nbsp;

She was a devoted wife and mother.&nbsp;&nbsp;She encouraged her children in their studies and school activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was a 4-H project leader.&nbsp;

Elaine also served as an election poll worker.&nbsp;

She married Bernard James Walter, Sr. on June 27, 1942 in Plattsburg, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;After 74 years of marriage, Bernard passed on January 8, 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;Elaine was also preceded by her parents, brothers, Edwin and Arthur Zeltwanger, sisters, Helen Henry and Norma Briggs.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Rev. Dr. B. James Walter, (Jean) of Reelsville, Indiana, Patsy Benitz (Dan) of Jefferson, Iowa, Betty Hoge (Gary) and Joyce Clibon (Vernon) both of St. Joseph, Missouri, Sisters, Luella Briggs, Shirley Hagan both of St. Joseph, Missouri, Darlene Gawatz of Kansas City, Missouri, Brothers, Ernest and William Zeltwanger both of St. Joseph, Missouri, 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews&nbsp;
