Sharon R. Knutter, 68, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022.

She was born November 21, 1953 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri to Glen and Shirley (Boley) Knutter. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from William Jewell College.

Following graduation from college, Sharon worked as a banker in Virginia and then sold insurance in Kansas City before a series of back injuries and subsequent surgeries in her late 20's required her to relocate to the Nashville area where her parents resided. She worked for the U.S. Department of Labor when her life took a tragic turn of events. She suffered two traumatic closed head injuries - one from a bike accident and the second one, three years later, from a car accident. From that time on her physical and cognitive abilities were greatly compromised.

In 2015, Sharon relocated to St. Joseph with her mother, following the death of her stepfather. In early summer 2016, following a series of extreme seizures, Sharon moved into the long-term care wing of Living Community Residential Care Facility. She remained there until her death, the last seven months being under hospice care.

Sharon was a Christian and was baptized into the First Baptist Church of Excelsior Springs, MO. Her subsequent moves provided opportunities for membership in Grassland Heights Baptist Church in Franklin, TN and Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph, MO.

Sharon spent many hours working word search puzzles and intricate counted cross stitch canvases - some of which won awards in the state of Tennessee

A special acknowledgment of gratitude is extended to the Living Community staff of caregivers. Over the years there were many special friendships that were forged. Particular mention must be made of Carly, who was with Sharon from the very beginning of her residency at Living Community. All of those who spent the last days of Sharon's life lovingly caring for her are remembered with deep affection. Sharon's friends Sandra, Delores, Mary and Everett were very close to her heart.

The Mosaic Life Care Hospice Team were truly angels of mercy. Heidi, Missy, and Taylor - your professionalism and compassion will never be forgotten.

Sharon is preceded in death by her father, Glen Knutter; and mother and stepfather, Shirley and Cal Cooper.

Survivors include her sister, Glenda Hamilton (Chuck) of St. Joseph; niece Laura Lucas (Robie) of Westchester, OH; nephews, Josh Hamilton (Kristin) and Alex Hamilton (Kirah), both of Kansas City, MO and their five children; stepsister, Kathi Camp (Clyde) of Allen, TX; stepbrother, Tim Cooper (Laurie) of Campbell, TX; aunt, Beverly Meyer and cousin, Rebecca Rosenberg both of Oak Park, CA.

Private inurnment will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, MO, next to her beloved father.

William Otis Cass, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2022.

He was born July 19, 1936, to Cecil and Mabel Cass, in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; children, Debbie, Judy, Chris, Kelly, Carrie, Karen, Valerie; numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

The family will hold a private gathering.

William "Bill" Otis Cass 1936 - 2022

George Arley Fountain, Jr. passed away peacefully in St. Joseph, Missouri, on October 19, 2022, following a cancer diagnosis in August. He was born in St Joseph on June 15, 1939 and moved to Cosby, Missouri, when he was 10 years old. After living in Savannah, Missouri, for many years, he moved back to St. Joseph in 1997.

George graduated from high school in Savannah in 1957, from St. Joseph Junior College in 1959, and (after attending Southern Methodist University for a year) from Northwest Missouri State University in 1963.

He went into the plumbing business with his father in Savannah and continued the business for several years after his father’s retirement before becoming a real estate agent in 1976. During his time in real estate, he bought over 30 properties to rehab and resell. He retired in 2000.

George was the son of George A. Fountain, Sr. and Vada (Sellick) Fountain both of whom predeceased him. His sister Frances Pflugradt also predeceased him.

He married Ruth Maie Snuggs of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 22, 1964. She survives of the home. He is also survived by daughter, Carol Fuson (Eric); son, Jeff Fountain (Kristi); grandchildren, Chloe, Jonathan, and Claire Fuson; sister, Olive Drake; as well as many nieces and nephews.

George was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1964 to 2002 when he joined First Presbyterian Church. He was a Ruling Elder and served on the governing boards of both churches. He was a dedicated volunteer in the community serving on the Board of InterServ for many years, as a driver for Meals on Wheels, and as cook and server at the Open Door Food Kitchen.

Survivors include two daughters Katherine Marie Nieman and Karen Raski, Leavenworth, KS, and Sandra Lee Callahan, Lancaster, KS, a brother Richard Pantle, Nortonville, KS, and a sister Juanita Bryan, Atchison, KS, nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. Georgia Lee Neufeld (Pantle) 1934 - 2022

Gladstone, Missouri…Donald Cleo Castor, age 97, was born January 8, 1925 in Weatherby, Missouri, the son of Cleo Daniel and Gladys Irene (Poage) Castor and passed away October 20, 2022.

Donald was a graduate of Weatherby High School class of 1942. He married, Wanda Jane (Riggs) on March 29, 1947. To this union a daughter was born.

Donald served in the United States Navy during World War II. After serving in the military, he later worked as a rural carrier for the US Postal Service until his retirement in 1980. As a second job, he built houses and did remodeling.

He was a loving husband, father, uncle, and grandfather.&nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; parents; brothers, John Dale Castor and Paul Castor; sister, Dixie Manning.

Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Cole, Kansas City; nephew, George Daniel Roberts, Kansas City; grandchildren, Chad and Adam; and a host of family and friends.

Graveside services will be at 12:00p.m.&nbsp;Monday, October 24, 2022, at Shambaugh- Cope Cemetery, Weatherby, MO. No visitation is scheduled.&nbsp;

Malone “Mo” Hendrix, 24, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022.

On December 15, 1997 he was born to Christopher and Michelle (Loyd) Hendrix in St. Joseph, Missouri.

If you knew Mo, then you know he never kept still. He loved spending time with his kids, friends and family. He enjoyed seafood, music, and John Wayne movies. He had a passion for guns, knives, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Lucy Hatfield; paternal grandfather, Frank Hendrix; and the mother of his daughter, Lacie Hearn.

Survivors include his children, Silas E. Jamal Mollus and Demi Ann Helen Hendrix; his parents; step-mother, Kerri Hendrix; siblings, Melissa Ann Hendrix, Michael Moore, Matthew Lakin, Kelcey Alexandria Filley, Jordan McBee; the mother of his son, Breanna K. Rev. Stanley Lloyd Meade, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with his Lord and Savior October 19, 2022.

He was born on January 13, 1936, to Clarence and Nellie (Osborn) Meade, in Harwood, Missouri. He married Norma (Poe) Meade July 17,1953. They were married 63 years, until Norma’s passing in 2016.

He wore many hats in his lifetime. He served in the Army 1958 to 1961, Airforce Defense Command Post. He worked as a professional musician in his early years. Stanley was involved in printing phases for the San Francisco Journal and The New York Times newspaper. Stanley enjoyed wood working.

He changed hats again when he answered the Lord’s call to preach the gospel. Pastor Stan was a pastor of many churches in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, and Mississippi. He served as an interim pastor in several churches after he retired from full time service. Stanley graduated from William Carey College, Hattiesburg, MS, with a master’s degree in counseling, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri, earning a master’s Degree in theology.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; sister, Geraldine Meade; sister-in-law Carol Leisey; and one great grandson.

Survivors include sons Michael Meade of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Jerry (Laurie) Meade of Bullhead City, Arizona; daughter, Linda Foley (Ivan) of Platte City, Missouri; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law Don Leisey; 3 nephews; one niece; extended family and friends.

Laquita Marie (Coulthard) Grinstead, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022.

She was born January 15, 1934 in Grand River, Iowa to John and Velma (Straight) Coulthard.

Laquita married Carlyle Gene Grinstead on May 22, 1952. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1998.

She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved being with her family. Laquita also enjoyed going shopping and traveling with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Carlyle; her parents; son, Terry Grinstead; and siblings, Dale, Almer and Hollis Coulthard and Regina Booth.

Survivors include daughters, Pamela Cook, Sheryl Baker (Chuck), and Rhonda Reynolds (Roy); daughter-in-law, Pamela Grinstead; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Clyde Coulthard (Charlotte); sisters-in-law, Betty Coulthard and Betty Broncucci; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Billy D. Cole, 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away surrounded by family on October 18, 2022.

He was born on March 2, 1935 in Amazonia, Missouri, the only child of the late June and Lavear Cole. On May 27, 1955, he married the love of his life, Joy Taylor.

He began his career in banking on his 18th birthday as a teller with the Empire Trust Company. From a modest beginning as hard-working farm boy, Bill earned his way through the ranks of finance and ultimately became one of the area’s most respected and best-known bankers. He was widely acknowledged as a gentleman who desired to see success for all in the community. During his 52-year career, he served as Chairman and CEO of American National Bank, President and CEO of Mercantile Bank and President and CEO of Heritage Bank before concluding his career with Nodaway Valley Bank. He was a member of the 50 Year Banker’s Club of Missouri, and a former member of Benton Club and St. Joseph Country Club.

Bill was also widely recognized by his “can do” attitude and love of assisting the people and industry of St. Joseph by volunteering his time to serve the community. He received many honors including the MS Society Hope Award, Junior Achievement National Impact Award, Chairman of the Pony Express Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Chieftain of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman, United Way Board Chairman, Missouri Western State College Foundation Director, Pony Express Museum Board Director, St. Joseph Industrial Foundation Director, Missouri Small Business Development Corporation Board Director and was a supporter of Boys Baseball, Young Life and Campus Crusade for Christ.

He was extremely proud of his family, never missing a sporting event, graduation, coronation, dedication or musical performance. Bill greatly enjoyed the maintenance of his yards and farms; he thrived on hard work in every aspect of his life. Bill enjoyed attending NASCAR events, supporting the Royals and Chiefs; and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. His influence continues to provide life-long lessons of leadership, humility, honor, love and faith for his family.

Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joy Taylor Cole; children, Nancy Stonner and husband Kevin, Blue Springs, MO; Norma Cole and husband Tom McCarthy, West Grove, PA; Mary Cole Benson and husband Todd, New York, NY; and Thomas Cole and wife Katherine, Liberty, MO; grandchildren Geoff Stonner, Eric Stonner and wife Annalisa, Abigail Cole and Adam Cole; great grandchildren, Henry, Michael and Samuel Stonner.

He was a member of the Atchison River Rods and enjoyed working on cars, bass fishing, computers, electronics, movies, Kansas City Chiefs and traveling with his best friend his wife Cheryl.

Terry married Cheryl Wykcoff on July 29, 1977; she survives of the home. Additional survivors include two brothers, Lee Smith, and Norman (Bonnie) Smith, both of St. Joseph, MO, brother-in-law Michael (Zhanna) Wykcoff, San Diego, MO, nieces Diane (Wally) Riggs, Rushville, MO, Pam (John) Sullivan, Clovis, CA.

Mike Adkins, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, October 16, 2022 after a 2 year battle with renal cell carcinoma.

He was born May 3, 1952 in St. Joseph to Robert and Margaret (Fleischman) Adkins. He was a 1970 graduate of Lafayette High School.

Mike married his High School sweetheart Sandra “Sandy” Hurst on June 13, 1970. She survives of the home.

He worked at Johnson Controls for 38 years and was a very proud member of Union Local 86116. He also was an honorary member of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE)fraternity of St. Joseph, MO.

Mike enjoyed and participated in many sports. He was a Chiefs, Royals and NHRA fan, enjoyed fishing and loud Rock and Roll.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandy; children, Aj Guinn (Jody), Kim Adkins (Chris); grandchildren, Jacob Guinn (Victoria), Maizy Guinn, Gavin Guinn, Robert Pearson and Vance Beaty.

Maysville, MO …..Dorothy “Earlene” Vaughn, age 93, was born August 03, 1929, in rural Maysville, Missouri, the daughter of Ovid Earl and Emma R. (Rogers) Scurlock and passed away October 17, 2022.

Earlene was a graduate of Maysville High School Class of 1947.&nbsp;&nbsp;On December 24, 1947, Earlene married the love of her life, Bill Vaughn, in Maysville, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;To this union four children were born. After the wedding, Earlene and Bill moved to their farm south of town. Earlene enjoyed being outside working in her garden, tending to the animals on the farm, needlepoint, and as of late, feeding the birds.

Earlene is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 74 years; parents; sister, Dorlene Jones; and grandson, Wesley Legg.

When housing became available he telegraphed his high school sweetheart Bertha Marie Molloy to come and they were married February 5, 1946 at Zion Lutheran Church in Phoenix, AZ. After separation from the Army Air Corp., Floyd and Marie returned to Kansas. Floyd graduated in 1947 from the first class of the University of Mortuary Science in Kansas City, KS. He worked as an embalmer and funeral director in Atchison becoming manager of the Stanton mortuary in 1964 and bought an interest in the Stanton Mortuary, Inc. in 1971. In 1982, due to health problems, he sold his interest to Bryan Becker. Floyd served Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Atchison for many years by serving on the school board and board of elders. He was an active member of the Lions Club and later the Rotary Club. Floyd maintained his membership in American Legion Post #6 for 73 years and served as Post Commander in 1968.

Floyd obtained his private pilot’s license in his forties and enjoyed piloting his single engine airplane. He was an avid golfer in Atchison and that continued after retirement when he and Marie moved to Sun City, AZ in 1988. In Sun City Floyd was active with Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, the Sun City Posse, and The Grand Canyon Lutheran Layman’s League. Floyd loved his role as father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After retirement he enjoyed his visits to Kansas and Missouri to visit the Grands and other relatives, old friends, and classmates. For many years he and Marie attended the Troy High School reunion in May. He continued his interest in northeast Kansas with his visits, contact with friends and relatives. Floyd would tell everyone that Atchison had been very good to him but would then add “I love Arizona”. Survivors include his daughter Barbara Ruhnke-David and her husband K. N. “Jack” David, Sun City, Ariz. Grandson Christopher D. (Heidi) Ruhnke, Warrensburg, Mo., four great-grandchildren Caleb Ruhnke, Wichita, KS and Cailynn, Carson, and Jonathan Ruhnke, Warrensburg, Mo.

His wife, Bertha Marie, a son Major Robert A. Ruhnke, a grandson Robert James Ruhnke, his parents, and a brother Lambert Ruhnke, preceded him in death.

Floyd Edward Ruhnke, 96, Sun City, AZ died Saturday October 15, 2022. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS with Rev. Kevin Lee Salmons, 62, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2022.

He was born September 27, 1960, to Larry and Judith (Price) Salmons in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Kevin graduated from Savannah High School. He worked for Blue Side (National Beef) as an industrial electrician. He then worked for Crane Construction as an IT manager.

He married Andria Sampson on November 13, 2005. She survives of the home.

He was a volunteer firefighter for Savannah Rural Fire Department. He also served as chairman on their board. He was the Avenue City School Board President for 19 years and won the Missouri State School Board President award in his time there. He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. Kevin was a member of Green Valley Church.

Kevin enjoyed working the sound board for Green Valley and Swiftkik. Kevin was an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed sprint cars. He loved his Kansas City sports teams. He was very involved in the different sports his kids were involved in, whether it be as a coach, umpire, or a parent.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry; sister, Amy Elifrits; grandchildren, Olyve Healey and Owen Healey; and toy poodle, Fritzy.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years; mother, Judy; children Nate (Angeline) Salmons, Nick (Cori) Salmons, Zak (Melissa) Salmons, Hannah Larson (Brock), Ben (Emily) Healey, and Zach (Melanie) Healey; grandchildren, Jackson, Joshua, Andrew, Thomas, Evelyn, Henry, Violet and Grace; loyal pet companions, Franny and Finny; siblings, Randy (Rhonda) Salmons and Lisa Umphrey (Jim); numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Daniel “Dan” Nathan Sharp, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2022.

He was born March 4, 1936, to William and Lucile (Dome) Sharp in Basin, Wyoming.

Daniel graduated from Albion College in Albion, Michigan. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Era. He retired from Abbott Laboratory as a Quality Assurance Manager, and then Sherwood Medical, which brought him to St. Joseph.

He married Nancy Alger Dice on December 19, 1959, in Evanston, Illinois. She survives of the home.

Daniel was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He enjoyed watching the Royals, Chiefs, Missouri Western Sports, golfing, fishing, and going “up north” to spend time with family in Wisconsin.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, William Sharp.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years; daughter, Laura Maglio (Scott) of Monroe, Michigan; son, Tim Sharp (Brenda) of Lenexa, Kansas; grandchildren Nicholas (Allie), Mitchell (Andrea), Christopher, Ryan, and Joseph; brother, David Sharp (Claudia); sister, Suzanne Coker; sister-in-law, Roberta Sharp; several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our brother, Robert Howard Steward, of Forest City, MO, at at the age of 57 after a long bout with cancer.

He was surrounded by his siblings, Donna Guyer, Vicky Meyer, and Scott Steward, as well as his loyal dog, Chief.

She was born April 11, 1946 in St. Joseph to Fred Barnett, Sr. and Arletha (Corbin) Barnett.

She was a Head Start/Pre-Kindergarten teacher in St. Joseph for 35-plus years.

Sandra enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family gatherings, going to the casino and playing cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Arlene Robinson, Harold Barnett, Frederick Barnett, Jr., Donald Barnett, Dorothy Smith, and Wayne Hortona; and her significant other, Pete “Doc” Blunt.

Elaine Lippold, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Joseph and Mildred (Hemry) Walker on June 18, 1931.

Elaine graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from Northwest Missouri State University.

She married George Lippold on June 13, 1968. He precedes her in death.

Elaine enjoyed traveling, restoration work in St. Joseph’s historical homes and woodworking.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sister, Elizabeth Dockery (Bill); two stepdaughters, Jude Adams (John), and Janice Kelly; and brother-in-law, Ronald Bibb.

Survivors include sister, Susan May Bibb; son in law, Richard Kelly; 13 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and 76 great great grandchildren; she was a loving aunt to many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jean A. Woods, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, October 14, 2022.

On January 23, 1942 she was born to Lloyd and Mary (Conrad) Agan in Peru, Iowa.

Jean married Thomas Lough Woods on November 24, 1963. He survives of the home.

She was a kindergarten teacher until staying home to raise her family. Jean was an active member of PEO and her Bridge Group. She loved KU basketball and more recently, KU football. She was an antique dealer and enjoyed interior decorating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Anita Thomure; and granddaughter, Lindsay Lange.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years; children, Jeffrey Woods (Michelle), Julie Woods (William), Gregory Woods (Michelle); grandchildren, Adam, Zachary, Aly (William), Henry, Kathleen, Shannon; great-grandchildren, Lily, Lucas, Wesley; brother, William Agan; niece, Jacquie Hubbard; and nephew, Andrew Thomure.
