Funeral services for both Mary M. and Don W. Johnson will be held together at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023, at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Pastor John Kress officiating, burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023, at the funeral home. Don graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1945 from Bendena High School. Mary and Don were married on December 24th, 1950, in Troy, KS. Don served in the United States Army. He worked for Blair Milling &amp; Elevator for 42 years as a buyer, salesman and miller laborer. Mary was a housewife and homemaker for most of her life until Don retired from Blair’s and then they both went to work at Snow Creek Ski Lodge for 14 years. Mary worked in the kitchen and busing tables, Don renting skis and helping with maintenance. They were members of the Community of Christ Church. Don was a member of the VFW Post # 1175 and the American Legion Post #6, Atchison and the Moose Club, Topeka, KS. He enjoyed farming and raising hogs, Mary enjoyed doing drawings, spending time doing yardwork and landscaping. They both enjoyed going to their children’s and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Their interest also included traveling and dancing to the Don Hoy band. Survivors include one daughter Jennifer (John) Wohlgemuth, Atchison, KS and two sons John (Barbara) Johnson, Topeka, KS, Todd (Leigh Ann) Johnson, Littleton, CO, six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Mary is survived by one sister, Helen Jackson, Topeka Ks. She was also preceded in death by her parents and six brothers, Robert, Billy Joe, Jack, Danny, Dick, Mike and five sisters, Jean Beagle, Bette Cox, Deola Smart, June LaBrecque and Susie Bratton Don is survived by a brother, Paul Johnson, Bendena, KS and a sister Clara Belle Culp, Troy, KS. Nicholas A. Claycomb, 65, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away, July 30, 2023. Nicholas was born August 22, 1957, in St. Joseph to Leonard and Patricia (Garvey) Claycomb.

He graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School. Nicholas served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp; receiving a honorable discharge. &nbsp;

&nbsp;He was in management for Safeway Grocers and Walmart. He retired from Mosaic Life Care working in the cafeteria.

Nicholas married Karla J. Middleton on September 13, 1983, in St. Joseph and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Christopher Claycomb, Jacob Claycomb, Noelle Hazelrigg (Gregg), Jacey Claycomb, Jalyn Claycomb, Stephanie Claycomb, Jason Claycomb; several grandchildren; siblings Jeff, Julie, Pat, Tom, and Tony; other relatives and friends.

He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and dogs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment and full military honors will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. He was born on January 22, 1957, in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Pete and Mary (Cowan) Bright.

Vivian Virginia “Jenny” Stinnett, 91, of Platte City, formerly of Savannah, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023. She was born March 8, 1932, in St. Joseph, daughter of the late Grant and Eva (Green) Vaughn. She graduated from the 8th grade at Lake Station School. She married Melvin Dale Stinnett in 1951 and he survives of the home.

She worked in the peony fields as a girl, and later as a seamstress at Big Smith Mfg, but mostly as a wife and homemaker, enjoying raising her children, and helping with grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, cleaning, working around the house, and watching her soap operas. She collected birds, saved and organized newspaper clippings about friends and family, and created a library of pictures. She cooked many, many wonderful meals for her family. She will be greatly missed.

Jenny was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wayne, Donald, and Lonnie Vaughn; sisters, Leona Curtis, and Lela Taylor; grandson, Brian Spalding; and great-grandson, Wyatt Richardson.

Celia Ann “Tillie” Reynolds, 101, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023.

She was born April 11, 1922 in Savannah to Albert and Rosetta (Page) Joslin. She grew up in Savannah.

Tillie married William Harry “Bill” Reynolds on July 27, 1937. They moved to an 80-acre farm near Stewartsville, Missouri, where they built their own house and shared 77 years together before Bill preceded her in death on March 15, 2015.

Tillie worked at the Swift &amp; Co. plant in St. Joseph for 20 years, starting out in the casing room, then spending many years working in the cafeteria.

She was a longtime member of Patee Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph.

In addition to tending to her huge garden and canning, and the baby livestock on the farm, Tillie enjoyed doing cross-stitch and watching the birds at her feeder. She loved to cook, making the best pies and egg noodles.

Tillie was always jolly with a sweet personality and a hug for everyone, but also kept her children in line.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; two sons, Larry Dale Reynolds and Bill Reynolds; daughter-in-law, Sharrie Reynolds; and siblings, Eddie Joslin, Albert Southwick and Buster Joslin.

Survivors include son, Jesse Reynolds; three grandchildren, Karrie Spor (Gerry), Kelly Reynolds (Laurie) and Terri Heater; five great-grandchildren, Adam Treece, Kristina Nold, Jennifer Churchill, Jessica Roe and Heather Heater; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Michael A. Barsch, 67, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

He was born December 15, 1955 in St. Joseph to Cletus and Delia (Hunt) Barsch. Michael grew up in St. Joseph, attending St. Patrick Catholic School and graduating from Central High School in 1974.

He belonged to a Ski Club that hit the slopes on multiple trips and also was a member of the Singles Club at St. Joseph Cathedral. He later earned the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Status.

He was an auto mechanic for Sears Automotive for 20 years and also kept all of the vehicles running for his friends and family.

After Sears, he worked in the Motor Pool at Fort Riley in Kansas, then upon returning to St. Joseph he was a custodian at St. Patrick School and a bartender at the Muny Inn.

It was around this time that Michael met the love of his life, Nancy Simmons. They enjoyed 15 years together before her passing.

Michael was very protective of his friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He was welcomed home to Heaven by his beloved girlfriend, Nancy; nephew, A.J. Goehring III; parents; and sister, Teresa Ann Barsch.

Survivors include his siblings, Mary Swymeler (Gary), Kathy Stufflebean (Leroy), Cletus Barsch Jr. (Patti), Raymond Barsch (Kerry), John Barsch (Angela) and Kim Goehring; and was blessed with an abundance of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Alongside her role as a proud member of the B.B.A., Betsy adored spending time with her friends and family, which added warmth to their lives.

Born to her late parents, William and Betty Hoffman, her tremendous love for family was evident in every aspect of her life. Betsy's precious memories will be cherished by her children: Chad Justus, Mark K. Grieshaber, Jr., James Jagodzinski, Dustin Owens, Jameson Owens, and Jim Lake. Betsy Hoffman 1950 - 2023

Gladys Corrine Wedekind was born on January 24, 1927 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. She was the youngest of five children born to Charles W. and Rosie (Baker) Hartmann.

She married William K. "Bill" Wedekind in Gordonville, Missouri on November 6, 1949. They were happily married for more than 50 years until Bill's passing in 2003. Their marriage was a true testimony to commitment, love, and communication.

In the late 1960's Gladys and Bill moved to Oregon, Missouri where Bill built Gladys their "dream home". &nbsp;She worked as a teacher's aide at the South Holt Elementary School and proved to be an exceptional mother and member of her community. &nbsp;

She was devout in her Christian faith and an active member of the Oregon United Methodist Church. She loved being a member of her sorority group Adelpha Club and the UMW. She participated in many community events yearly and was known for her numerous pies made for the Kiwanis' Fall Festival booth.

Gladys enjoyed gardening, sewing, and especially baking. Each fall Gladys and Bill made their phenomenal apple cider that they produced from their home orchard, pressing hundreds of gallons each year. Gladys followed the Chiefs and Royals religiously as a dedicated (and sometimes loud) fan. &nbsp;Gladys was extremely generous in her donations, especially to children of third world countries and Veteran organizations.&nbsp;

Gladys passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in Savannah, Missouri at the age of 96.

In addition to her husband, Bill, she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Colista Thoma, Hadley Hartmann, James Hartmann, and Stella Cook; and daughter, Jane Ann Morrill.

Survivors include her son, Kim D. Gladys Corrine Wedekind was born on January 24, 1927 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. She was the youngest of five children born to Charles W. and Rosie (Baker) Hartmann.She married William K. "Bill" Wedekind in Gordonville, Missouri on November 6, 1949. They were happily married for more than 50 years until Bill's passing in 2003. Their marriage was a true testimony to commitment, love, and communication.In the late 1960's Gladys and Bill moved to Oregon, Missouri where Bill built Gladys their "dream home". &nbsp;She worked as a teacher's aide at the South Holt Elementary School and proved to be an exceptional mother and member of her community. &nbsp;She was devout in her Christian faith and an active member of the Oregon United Methodist Church. She loved being a member of her sorority group Adelpha Club and the UMW. She participated in many community events yearly and was known for her numerous pies made for the Kiwanis' Fall Festival booth.Gladys enjoyed gardening, sewing, and especially baking. Each fall Gladys and Bill made their phenomenal apple cider that they produced from their home orchard, pressing hundreds of gallons each year. Gladys followed the Chiefs and Royals religiously as a dedicated (and sometimes loud) fan. &nbsp;Gladys was extremely generous in her donations, especially to children of third world countries and Veteran organizations.&nbsp;Gladys passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in Savannah, Missouri at the age of 96.In addition to her husband, Bill, she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Colista Thoma, Hadley Hartmann, James Hartmann, and Stella Cook; and daughter, Jane Ann Morrill.Survivors include her son, Kim D. Stuart Wayne Praiswater, 57, Bolckow, MO passed away Wednesday, July 26th, 2023 in Barnard, MO. He was born June 26, 1966 to Larry Dean &amp; Beverly Louise (Roberts) Praiswater. He married Luane Sue Praiswater in Fillmore, MO on May 19th, 1989 and she preceded him in death in 2019, she was the love of his life.&nbsp;

Stu loved his family and the time he spent with them. He enjoyed cardinal baseball, chiefs football, coffee and busch heavy. He loved being a grandad and spending time with his grandson. His girls were his world and treasured the time that they spent together. They did a lot together and loved treating them to prime rib at Fredrick Inn. The time he got to spend with his friends and family is time that he never took for granted and enjoyed every minute of it. His smile and laughter could light up a room and was always the kindest person in the room. He spent his years being a structural steel detailer and had a true love and talent for it.&nbsp;

Leroy “Sonny” Phillips passed away July 26, 2023.

He was born in St. Joseph on November 26, 1939, to Leroy and Sophia (Jaroski) Phillips. He was a member of the Lafayette High School class of 1958.

On September 1, 1961, he married Barbara Minor.

Sonny was the first born, first to wake up, first to the party and the first to help everyone. He enjoyed owning fast cars. In his younger years, he kept the police busy writing tickets. He was a member of the St. Joseph Boat and Yacht Club, and the Happy Hookers fishing group. He enjoyed Missouri River boating with his family and fishing with his friends. For many years he was a season ticket holder for the KC Chiefs and enjoyed NHRA events.

Sonny had a great sense of humor and enjoyed pulling pranks. He was always updating everyone about where to get the cheapest beer and gas. He liked a tenderloin with a beer on the side and good conversation with his family and friends close by.

Sonny retired from Seitz Foods in 2001 after 36 years of service.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a stepbrother, grandson, Dustin Beaman, and many great friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, son, Mark Phillips (Tina), daughter, Marcia Beaman (Kevin), granddaughters, Nichole and Brandi Beaman, great-grandchildren, Jace, Dayton, Kinnzlie and Bre’Auna, sisters, Nancy Reder and Susie Bohart, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was liked by everyone. He was known as a good man who worked hard to create a great life for his family and will be missed by many.

Per Sonny’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Nancy Lou Wessel, 91, of Atchison, died peacefully Tuesday evening, July 25, 2023, at her home after a short illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a visitation and luncheon immediately following the service in the church's parish hall.

Nancy was born on Sept. 16, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Chester J. and Frances E. Keating. She attended schools in Atchison, St. Joseph and Fayetteville, S.C. She graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1947.

She met William C. Wessel, Jr., at St. Joseph Junior College, where both participated in theater. After junior college Nancy finished her studies at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor's degree in Spanish.

Nancy and William C. Wessel, Jr., were married Nov. 1, 1952, at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death in 2014.

Nancy was a stay-at-home mom while living in St. Joseph, devoted to her husband and four children. While living in St. Joseph, Nancy was heavily involved in community activities. She was a member and president of the St. Joseph Junior League, a founder of the Meals on Wheels program and heavily involved in the St. Joseph's Children's Community Theater.

In February of 1976, the family moved to Atchison, where she and Bill became the proprietors of Waisner and Shelver, a ladies clothing store and bridal shop at 515 Commercial St. It previously had been owned and operated by her parents and grandparents.

Upon retirement in 1993, Nancy and Bill headed south to their beloved Hope Town, Abaco Bahamas. Their little slice of paradise was a place to unwind, make new friends and enjoy family visiting from time to time. While winters were spent there, many late summer vacations took them to Estes Park, Colo.

Later in life, the travel bug bit Nancy, and she circumvented Iceland in 2018, explored Ireland and Scotland in 2019 and cruised along the Mexican coast and Southern Caribbean in 2022.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Nina (Gerald) Schletzbaum, Good Intent; William C. Wessel III, Atchison; Lydia (Sam) Funk, Atchison; and Nanette Kissenberth, Warren, Vt. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Lauren (Tyson) Fitzpatrick, Atchison; Madison Wood, Burlington, Vt.; Mary-Kate (Abby) Funk, Liberty, Mo.; Garner (Ashley) Funk, Atchison; and William Christian Wessel IV, Atchison; and four great-granddaughters, Abigail, River, Ava and Brynn.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, George Kissenberth, Warren, Vt.

Martha Clements of St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, age 79. Martha was born on July 29, 1943, in Oceanside, CA, and was the daughter of the late Frank Lopez, Elaine and Dale Martin.&nbsp;

Martha dedicated herself to serving the community through countless organizations such as the League of Women Voters, Robidoux Row, and St. Joseph Historical Society. She was actively involved in political campaigning and supported her children’s school organizations while working at Townsend &amp; Wall and Shelter Insurance.

Martha was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was passionate about antiques, British history, and introducing her children and grandchildren to arts and culture. She was known for her whimsical and childlike spirit. Martha always had valuable wisdom and a pot of spaghetti to share with others. She deeply loved all animals and was never seen without a cat.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Marion Clements, daughter Michelle Clements, granddaughter Alexis Clements, grandson Zachery Clements (Sarah Insco) and her beloved cat Cosmo Kramer.&nbsp;

Martha is preceded in death by her son Michael Clements.

An out-of-state funeral service will be held at a later date. In place of flowers, the family extends the option to make a charitable donation in Martha’s name to the St. Joseph Animal Shelter.

She deeply loved all animals and was never seen without a cat.&nbsp;She is survived by her husband, Marion Clements, daughter Michelle Clements, granddaughter Alexis Clements, grandson Zachery Clements (Sarah Insco) and her beloved cat Cosmo Kramer.&nbsp;Martha is preceded in death by her son Michael Clements.An out-of-state funeral service will be held at a later date. In place of flowers, the family extends the option to make a charitable donation in Martha’s name to the St. Joseph Animal Shelter.<figure>

Wanda Marcella (Parkhurst) Moore was born May 2, 1932 in Davis City, Iowa to Marion and Velma Parkhurst. She passed from this life on July 25, 2023.

She attended and graduated from Maysville School in Maysville, Missouri. She married John L. Moore on March 10, 1950 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

She worked alongside her husband on a dairy farm for many years. She also worked in sales at Sears Roebuck Store, Kirwans Store, and various insurance companies. She was well-known for her passion raising registered Pomeranian dogs. She enjoyed painting, flower gardening, reading, and spending time with family. She was a member of Marvin McMurray Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L., daughters, Cheryl Moore and Jean Gregory, son, Rickie Moore, two grandsons, Rickie Moore, Jr. and Scott Moore, and one great-grandson Tanner Polsgrove.

Survivors included: Candace (Michael) Sue Bartlett, Randy Jay (Sharon) Moore, Bradley Michael (Lisa) Moore, and Rodney Len (Jodi) Moore, son-in-law Danny Gregory, and sister-in-law Terry Parkhurst Whipp. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and extended family and friends.

The family appreciates the patient, loving care she received at Oregon Care Center and AseraCare Hospice Team.

Marsha (Woodward) Osburn, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on June 25, 1951, to Bill and Marjorie (Thomas) Woodward.

Marsha graduated from Central High School, and later attended Platte Business College. Marsha worked at Commerce Bank in the loan services department for many years.

On September 26, 1986, she married Rodger Lee Osburn, with whom she shared 23 years of marriage until his passing.

She faithfully attended Heritage Church, sharing her love for the Lord with those around her. Marsha also spent time volunteering at Mosaic hospital, a testament to her giving and caring heart.

Marsha enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Her daughter remembers her for her beautiful smile, and her son said she always made things interesting. She had a fondness for cats and loved to spoil her fur-babies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Marjorie, and her husband, Rodger.

She is survived by her children, Melissa Lentz (Andy) and Nathan Wieneke (Erin); brother, Gary Woodward (Kathy); grandchildren, Justin Lentz (Cassie), Kaylee Johnston (Clayton), Shallin Wieneke, and Ian Wieneke; numerous nieces and one nephew.

Mary Lynn Nuzum, 47, of Highland, Kansas, died peacefully on July 21, 2023, surrounded by her family, at the University of Kansas Medical Center after battling a long illness.&nbsp;

Mary was born June 16, 1976, in Hiawatha, Kansas. She was the youngest of four children born to Gary and Betty Joe Weis. After the death of her mother at a young age, her father remarried Laverte (Davis) Weis in which she gained two additional brothers. She grew up and spent most of her life in Highland, Kansas.

She was a 1994 graduate of Highland High School. She went on and earned her Associates of Business from Highland Community College. She worked in Hiawatha, Kansas for the Brown County District Court as a clerk and as a juvenile intake officer for years until she was unable to work due to her illness.&nbsp;

She married Mike Nuzum March 29, 2002. They resided in Hiawatha, Kansas for 16 years before returning to Highland. He was her life partner of 30 years at the time of her death. He survives at home. They were blessed with one daughter, Maggie Nuzum.&nbsp;

Mary loved to play Bingo, go fishing, sit on her porch, and spend quality time with her family. Despite her health challenges she always had a smile and loved to laugh. She was devoted to her family and loved ones.&nbsp;

She was preceeded in death by her parents, maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, and a niece.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Mike Nuzum of the home, daughter Maggie Nuzum (Ryan Kleyn) of Saint. Charles, MO. Other survivors include her stepmother Laverte Weis of Highland, four brothers Kevin (Cathy) Weis of White Cloud, KS, Ed Weis Highland, KS, Brian (Lisa) Davis of Cedar Rapids, IA, John (Kaitlin) Weis of Highland, KS, and one sister Melody Fields of Highland, KS, one sister-in-law Margo Nuzum of Kansas City, MO, Curt (Sara) Nuzum of Houston, TX, many nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.&nbsp;

Arthine B. Hunter, 105, a lifelong resident of Atchison, Kansas died peacefully July 12, 2023, at her residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday July 29th from 1:00 P.M. until time of services at the church.&nbsp;

Arthine was born September 17, 1917, in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of William Dudley, Sr., and Janie Woodyard Dudley. She attended Lincoln Elementary School in Atchison.

She and David M. Hunter, Sr. were united in marriage on November 14, 1934, at Zion Baptist Church in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Hunter preceded her in death on April 29, 1990.

Arthine was a homemaker first and foremost, but she occasionally assisted prominent families in their homes in Atchison with domestic responsibilities.

She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Atchison, Kansas. &nbsp;In her spare time, she enjoyed taking care of her family and was known as the Matriarch of her family. She enjoyed attending antique auctions and collecting antiques and was an expert at decorating and designing.

Arthine is survived by nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren including Ebony Knott who was a longtime caregiver for her great grandmother, and two great-great grandchildren. And a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her children, Alberta Mae Kelly and David Monroe Hunter, Jr.; siblings: six sisters, Eizabeth “Lizzy” Churchill; Lilly Churchill; Carrie Ann Snoddy; Louise Ross; Jeanette Dudley; Madge Ross; and four brothers, Clarence Dudley; James “Teensy” Dudley; Ralph Dudley and William “Bill” Dudley, Jr., grandchildren Mark Richard Kelly and Christopher Kelly.

Daryl was born, December 10, 1951, in Atchison, Kansas, the only child of Francis J. “Junior” and Joan (Betts) Drimmel. He attended Atchison Catholic Elementary school then the Shannon School.&nbsp;

He and Marta Husted were married September 5, 1981, at the Robinson United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

Daryl was self-employed his whole life. He was in business with his father, farming, trucking, fertilizer spreading, sold cars and farm machinery, along with seed sales. Once was in business with Doug Armstrong doing custom AG service for the surrounding area.

Daryl enjoyed farming and going to auctions. He enjoyed working on cars. Daryl was ornery, he loved to joke and make people laugh. He never knew a stranger; on road trips or family vacations he could make small talk with anyone he came across. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Marta Drimmel; a son, Darin (Christina) Drimmel, Atchison, KS; a daughter, Bridgette Drimmel, Goddard, KS; and two grandchildren, Leland and Haiden Drimmel.&nbsp;

She and Norman M. Ford, Sr., were united in marriage on November 10, 1944, at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Mr. Ford preceded her in death in 1993.&nbsp;

Survived by her daughter, Karen High, Gladstone, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Norman Ford; and a sister, Esther Brown.
