Cleta Halter, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2023.

Cleta was born in De Kalb, MO to Winfield and Zurnal Martin on August 24, 1939. She graduated in 1957 from DeKalb High School and moved to St. Joseph.

In 1959, she attended the Missouri Air National Guard Military Ball at the Frog Hop and was named the Sweetheart of the MoANG. This is where she met her future husband, Lawrence (Larry) Halter. They were married on February 4th, 1961.

Cleta worked for Farmers State Bank, Heritage Bank, and the FDIC for several years before she retired.

Her organizational memberships include: P.E.O. Chapter FP of which she held several offices and the St. Joseph Reciprocity. Charter member of the Ambassador club of Nodaway Valley Bank. Cleta loved traveling with the Ambassador club and most importantly traveling and camping with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her parents; brother, Raymond Martin; and sister, Lucille Eskridge.

She is survived by sons, Andrew Halter, David (Jennifer) Halter; daughter, Gail (David) Gerber; grandchildren, Barbara (Michael) Ford, Mary Respress, Katie Halter, Edward (Nikki) Halter, Alexandra and Addison Gerber; great-grandchildren, Josilin Case, Malachi, Michael and Milayla Respress, Maxwell and William Halter, Liberty Ford, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Huffman United Methodist Church or a charity of donor’s choice.

Kenneth O. Gabriel, Colonel (Ret.) passed away peacefully at home on August 13, 2023 surrounded by his family

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 65 years. A legacy of family and an amazing career follow this great man.

Kenneth gave 37 years of proud service to his country in both active duty and guard duty in the Air Force and Air Guard. His career began in 1952 as a pilot in the Air Force and ended in 1989 as Base Commander in the Missouri Air Guard. Kenneth served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars with numerous missions of bravery and sacrifice.

He was a very proud man and his family was just as proud of him. Kenneth never knew a stranger; as a high-ranking officer he made sure all those who served under him were treated equally.

Kenneth is a proud descendant of the Lakota Sioux Tribe.

Kenneth loved to golf and travel in their RV, preferably with the grandchildren.

He was a perfect gentleman, awesome father and grandfather, and a caring, loving husband. He was the love of our entire family.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Wichenda Gabriel; his sister, Peggy Colboch; and his son, Stephen Kenneth.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Barbara; daughters, Nancy and Cheryl; daughter-in-law, Kelly (Ken); grandchildren, Ryan (Robbie), Rachel (Josh), Kylee (Joe), Cassie (Chris), Kenneth, Cody (Caycee); and 15 wonderful great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

Kenneth O. Gabriel, Colonel (Ret.) 1934 - 2023

Melvin Neal Miller, 88, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023, in San Angelo, Texas.

He was born on September 21, 1934, to Kenneth N. and Frankie E. (Beaman) Miller in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War serving on the USS Mt. Katmai. After his time in the Navy, Melvin worked as a tile and linoleum installer in the Denver, Colorado area and later retired from Heckman Carpets in St. Joseph.

On June 21, 1981, he married Sharlene K. Sieckmann in Trenton, Missouri. She survives of the home.

Melvin was previously a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, where he was baptized, and was most recently a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in San Angelo, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Dolores (Stafford) Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Sharlene Miller of San Angelo, TX; children, Michael Miller (Aryn) of Longmont, CO and Linda Hersco (Patrick) of Denver, CO; granddaughter, Rebecca Nickel (Chris), and great-grandson, Aiden Nickel.

Diana Ptomey, 72, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Diana was born on July 11, 1951, in Saginaw, Michigan to Joe and Ramona (Coleman) Zapata.

She was attending the Troy Christian Church. Diana worked as a care giver in the Texas State Hospital and Schools for over 37 years. Her love for her family and animals will never be forgotten.

Diana married David Ptomey on November 27, 2011. He survives of the home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Mark Zapata and mother and father-in-law, Calvin and Joyce Ptomey.

Joyce worked for John’s Market for over 50 years in Troy, Kansas. She was an avid sports fan of all sports, especially KU and the Royals. Most of all her love for her family and friends will never be forgotten.

Joyce married Calvin Ptomey on December 3, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kansas. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Pam Keller, son-in-law, Paul Keller, daughter-in-law, Diana Ptomey and brother, Raymond Judd.

Joyce Ptomey 1930 - 2023

Earl E. Shultz, 86, of St. Joseph, MO passed away on August 14, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Earl was born in Rosendale, MO on March 19, 1937. He grew up in Rosendale and graduated from Rosendale High School in 1955. Earl continued his education at Tarkio College where he played football, basketball, and ran track and obtained his BS in Education in 1959. He later received his Master’s Degree from Northwest Missouri State University.

It was in high school that Earl met the love of his life, Billie Jean Cobb. They were married on August 24, 1956 in Savannah, MO and were inseparable for 61 years until Billie’s passing in February 2018. Earl was also preceded in death by his mother, Mary Etta Lisle, step-father, Ora Lisle, and brother Johnnie. Earl is survived by two sons, Johnny (Sue) Shultz of Platte City, MO and Jim (Cindy) Shultz of Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren, Derek (Mylene Garcia) of Stone Mountain, GA, Jessica Shultz of Kansas City, MO, Ryan (Brooke) Shultz of Savannah, MO; and great-granddaughter, Irena. &nbsp;

Earl taught and coached in Peculiar, MO, Stewartsville, MO, and North Platte High School in Dearborn, MO. When he retired from teaching in 1995 the late Al Seifert, published an article about Earl in the St. Joseph News Press. Earl was so touched by the article that he said he wanted it included in his obituary when the time came.

“One of the men who intrigued me most is about to retire without a word. He’s been away from coaching for a while. Now he’s stepping away from education entirely. Earl Shultz first came to my attention as the basketball coach at Stewartsville. He wasn’t just the basketball coach. He coached boys. He coached girls. He coached six-man football. He coached track. He taught physical education. He taught social studies. He drove the bus for road trips and swept out the gym.

If Mr. Peepers had a role model it was Earl Shultz. He would walk to his bench just before game time, a Cardinal Red towel thrown over his shoulder. No one – except his players – heard a word from him until his Cardinals had chalked up another win. They did that with regularity.

I didn’t know it at the time, but Shultz’s background was the biggest factor in his demeanor. He was a starter with the Rosendale men’s fast pitch softball team at the age of 12. He listened, didn’t say much and ran down fly balls like greyhounds run down rabbits.

Softball was his favorite sport, and he might have coached the game at the high school level if he’d had the opportunity. As it was, he played well into six decades with some of the best teams in this area – Breit-Hawkins, Fillmore, Amazonia, and others.

At Stewartsville, his second coaching job, he produced an undefeated team in girls’ basketball (there was no girls state tournament at that time) and an undefeated six-man football squad. Five years later he moved down the road to Dearborn and immediately worked his magic there. He was still coaching football, boys’ and girls’ basketball and dabbling with track when he started the North Platte baseball program in 1973. He finally became an administrator, but not before he won league basketball titles in 1967, ’68, and ’69.

He was always a player’s coach. At a retirement reception recently, one of his former players, Barbara Farris, now teaching at North Platte Middle School, summed it up.

“I enjoyed playing basketball for you so much that I modeled my whole teaching style after you,” she said. “Be kind, be fair, always give the student the benefit of the doubt. Thank you for always setting the example.”

It was Earl’s request that he be cremated. Private interment will be held at a later date at the Savannah Cemetery in Savannah, MO.

Kenny attended Lafayette High School. He was a member of the Teamsters-Local 460 Sheet Metal Workers Union, working as a Supervisor with Seaman-Schuske Metal Works. Kenny enjoyed taking care of others. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother, Dennis Martinez, Sr., sister, Kathy Osborn, and brother, Michael Martinez. 

Survivors include: wife of 62 years, Vella Ann Martinez of the home, children, Kenny (Monica) Martinez, Ronnie (Courtney) Martinez, Marty (Heidi) Martinez, Carlene Martinez, siblings, Abel (Diane) Martinez, Dickie (Glenda) Martinez, Candy (Roy) Beers all of St. Joseph, grandchildren, Mykayla, Tre, Karter, Myla, and She` Martinez, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Ray Martinez 1944 - 2023

Dallas Austin Matson 26, of St Joseph, MO, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023 in St Joseph. He was born April 8, 1997 in St. Joseph.

 Dallas attended Lafayette High School. Dallas loved dogs, taking walks, and taking care of others. 

Survivors include: his mother, Jackie Churchill of Sedalia, MO, his son, Adrian Brown and his mother Mackenzee Brown, siblings, Katelynn Giles and Johnathon Kieser of St. Joseph, maternal grandparents, Susan (Randy) Barker and Terry Matson, maternal great-grandmothers, Janice Waters and Rhonda Wright, aunt, Tara Matson, great-aunt, Michelle Miller, his best friend, Nathan Hutchison, all of St. Joseph, and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. Dallas will be cremated following services.

Dallas Austin Matson 26, of St Joseph, MO, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023 in St Joseph. He was born April 8, 1997 in St. Joseph. Dallas attended Lafayette High School. Dallas loved dogs, taking walks, and taking care of others. Survivors include: his mother, Jackie Churchill of Sedalia, MO, his son, Adrian Brown and his mother Mackenzee Brown, siblings, Katelynn Giles and Johnathon Kieser of St. Joseph, maternal grandparents, Susan (Randy) Barker and Terry Matson, maternal great-grandmothers, Janice Waters and Rhonda Wright, aunt, Tara Matson, great-aunt, Michelle Miller, his best friend, Nathan Hutchison, all of St. Joseph, and numerous cousins. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. Dallas will be cremated following services.<figure>

We will always remember Bob Blythe fondly as a friendly man filled with love and passion for his family and community. Born September 29, 1928 in Gallatin, Missouri, he fulfilled a life journey that concluded on August 12, 2023.

Bob was a devoted husband to Evelyn (Metzinger) Blythe, a loving father to sons Mark (Tresa) and Matt (Stacy), and a cheerleader to his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His supportive presence will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Brett (Jena), Kenzie, Paige (Darren), Torri (Christian) and great-grandchildren Avery, Kyrie, Braydi, Collins, Raye, and Bennett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville E. and Helen Z. (Minnick) Blythe.

Bob had a decorated history of service, having served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also known for his community involvement, active as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 102 in Albany, Missouri, and mentoring young men as a Medicine Man for the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He took pleasure in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, and cherished the time spent watching his grandchildren play ball games.

The memory of Bob's friendly nature will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy will forever remind us to live fully, love unconditionally, lead with kindness and always eat dessert.

Gary McKeown, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023.

He was born November 20, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Patrick and Evelyn (Harkins) McKeown. He grew up in the Des Moines/West Des Moines area.

Right after graduating from high school, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country in San Diego during the Cuban Missile Crisis era.

Gary returned to West Des Moines after his active military service and worked for Delavan Manufacturing in the heat-treat department. He served four years of Naval Reserves at Fort Des Moines.

Gary married Jo Ranae Taylor on June 27, 1964. They moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where he was a metallurgist for Eaton Corp. from 1970 until he retired in 1997. He worked various jobs after retirement.

In 2004, Jo retired and they moved to an acreage near Savannah, Missouri, then in 2009 they moved to their retirement home in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Gary enjoyed many years of camping and volunteering, and the 12 winters he and Jo spent at their home in Arizona.

Gary was a jack of all trades who could fix anything. He was deeply devoted to his family, who loved to hear his whistling and will greatly miss him.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jo; children, Susan Carlisle (Dave) of St. Joseph, Stephanie Carter (Barry) of Omaha, Nebraska, Shawna Modlin (Jay) of Kansas City, Missouri, Tricia George (Chris Duke) of St. Joseph, Ryan McKeown (Rhonda) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Heather Schultz (Jordan) of Auburn, Nebraska; grandchildren, Andrew and Jordan Carlisle, Jacob Carter (Cassidy), Megan Hough (Trevor), Kate and Holly Modlin, Carson and Stefan Loewe, Berkley George, Olivia, Alex and Bella Duke, Selena and DeVonte Perez, Davion Douglas-Beggs, Taylor and Mason Schultz; three great-grandchildren; sister, Sondra Short (Jackson) of Warrensburg, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Evelyn Sledd McClure went to be with her Lord on Friday, August 11, 2023. Born on September 21, 1922 to loving parents (Uel and Ona Sledd) in Fleming, Kentucky. Evelyn moved with her family to St. Joseph when she was 16 years old. She attended Central High School and graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in Dietetics in 1944. In the same year, she married her beloved husband, Dr. Birt W. McClure, and they spent their life together raising their three boys, traveling the world, collecting antiques, and enjoying the company of close friends.

Evelyn was a loving and caring mother, dedicated homemaker, and valued member of the community. She was a faithful parishioner of the First Presbyterian Church, serving at times as Deacon, Elder, and President of “The Women of Church”.

As a child of the Great Depression, she was remarkably strong and diligently thrifty. She was raised with strong morals and gratefulness, which influenced her passion for charity. Her generosity was evidenced in countless acts of service. She was a loyal volunteer, spending more than 50 years serving at the hospital and donating her time to the library.

Evelyn was a lifetime member of The Flower Society of St. Joseph, Questers, PEO, and Runcie Club, and she most enjoyed spending time playing Mahjongg (and bridge in her younger years) with her dear friends. She had passion for gardening, volunteering, hosting friends, and working on Springbok puzzles. She was meticulous, organized, and set the bar exceedingly high in terms of documenting life events.

Evelyn (Evie to some) was a good friend. Full of wisdom, grace, and sincerity, she appreciated the importance of keeping in touch with loved ones, and maintained countless valued friendships, many life-long.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Birt, eldest son, Marc (Susan), and grandson, Shawn (Tracy). She is succeeded in death by her dear sister, Carolyn Thomas (Henry), sons Keith (Jacqueline) and Michael (Deborah), seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Jacob Dean Engelman, 31, beloved son of Jimmie and Christina Engelman, of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away on August 9th, 2023. He is survived by his mother and father, his brother, Enoch with his wife, Courtney and their sons, Bryce, Archie, Oliver and expecting Dutton in November. Also by his siter Abigail Dickerson with her husband, John and their daughter Edith Marie.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy.

We miss them both more than words could ever express. We will be with them again because of the salvation given freely to us through the Cross of Christ- the blood of Jesus, that we have accepted. John 14:6.

Sonya J. Bergman, 76, of Hoyt, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at her home in Hoyt.

She was born on January 2, 1947 in Alma, KS, the daughter of Karl and Ella Hasenbank Fink, in the middle of a snowstorm at her Grandparents home.&nbsp;

On June 20, 1981; Sonya married her loving, unwavering husband Eugene “Gene” Bergman at the First United Methodist Church in Hoyt. &nbsp;He survives, of the home. Her family was most important to her and showered us all with love.

Other survivors include her children, Pam Moseley (Mike) Doug Bergman (Vicky), Sara Rose (Chris) and Suzy McCord (Jason); her sister, Shelia Murray; grandchildren, Michael Moseley (Elizabeth), Larry Michael Hladky, Brandy Bedford (Tyler), Cheyenne Bergman, Gage Bergman, Quincy McCord (Frankie), Hillari Lynn (Daniel), Katlyn Rose and Kolby Holthaus; great grandchildren, Jayden, Henry, Grace, Korbin, Kaiden, Amelia, Scarlett and Penelope, and many many other family and friends.&nbsp;

Sonya loved doing crafts and had her own ceramics room, where every summer for many years she would teach local 4-H kids the process of ceramics and how to paint them. She loved to go shopping at craft stores in search of her next new project. Another favorite hobby she had was taking pictures of everything. You would find her many times with a camera in her hand. She captured Senior pictures for not only her own children but several of their friends. She was most proud of her award-winning photo, “Deep Sea Diving at Grandma’s”.&nbsp;

Sonya retired from Royal Valley School District where she started as a janitor then moved into the kitchen and became one of the RVHS “Kooks.” She took pride in providing great tasting school lunches and made the best breads and desserts. She was “mom” to all her kids’ friends and many still today.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Ella (Hasenbank) Fink, her sisters, Sylvia Spangler and Schrita Fink, and her brother, Steven Fink.&nbsp;

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, Mayetta, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 18th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Jospeh Cemetery at Hoyt. &nbsp;Sonya will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m.

She was born on October 3, 1936, to Alva and Fostine (Gulledge) Bacon in Fairfax, MO. Beverly moved to Trimble, MO in 1975 where she made her home and raised her family.

Beverly enjoyed gardening. canning, and camping. Most of all, she loved being a homemaker and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Alva and Fostine Bacon; her husbands Dale Gregory and Ivan Gregory; her son Keith Gregory; three brothers and three sisters.&nbsp;

Paulette Angel Reinosky, 74, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away August 11, 2023.

She was born on July 9, 1949, in Alton, Illinois. The family moved to Las Angels, CA where she grew up and attended high school. Paulette later moved to Bouton, IA where she raised her children. She met her husband, Richard, while she was living in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On October 29, 1993, she was united in marriage to Richard Reinosky. After their marriage, they traveled all over the United States and in 2001, they settled in Camden Point, MO. They later moved to Leavenworth, KS where they were currently living.&nbsp;

Paulette enjoyed gardening and making crafts.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents John Carl Payne, Sr and Grace Marie (Chapman) Payne.

Paulette is survived by her husband Richard Reinosky; children Jim (Phillip) Donnlley and Sareana Rawson; grandchildren Alexis Donnlley, Johnathon Rawson and Kendra Pedicini; great-grandchildren Laila, Adalynn, Colt and Cashton; other relatives and many friends.

Roselee Smith, 71, of Atchison, Kansas, passed from this life Friday, August 11, 2023 at Atchison Senior Village.

Roselee was born June 10, 1952, in White Cloud, KS, the daughter of Charles David Blakley and Elizabeth Jane (Staines) Blakley. She graduated from Weston High School.&nbsp;

She married Ernest J. Smith, Sr., on July 21, 1973, in Atchison, Kansas, and they shared over thirty years together until his passing on September 30, 2006.&nbsp;

Roselee was formerly a member of the First Baptist Church in Atchison, where she ran the church nursery for seventeen years; she later joined Crossroads Chapel in Rushville. She was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother to her family. She had a knack for working on puzzles, enjoyed travelling and camping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp;

Left to cherish her memory include her children, Paul (Tracy) Smith, Charles (Melissa) Smith; Donna (Tom) Earl, Jewel Reese; a brother, Bill Blakley; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie Smith, Sr.; a sister, Almeda White; and a son, Ernie Smith, Jr.&nbsp;

Services to celebrate and remember Roselee’s life will be Monday, August 14, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Pastor Tommy Silva as officiant. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will gather with friends for a time of visitation on Sunday, Aug. 13th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Thummel on April 13, 2002. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2017. Survivors include a son Brandon (Heather) Thummel, Atchison, KS, three daughters Miranda Thummel, Garnett, KS, Chelsea Thummel, Atchison, KS, and Destiny Thummel, of the home in Topeka, KS., a brother John (Shelley) Foster, Pryor, OK, and a sister Angela (Kevin) Smith, Mountain Home, AR, six grandchildren and two grand dogs. Daurice Andrew Starr 31, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in St. Joseph. He was born July 31, 1992 in St. Joseph, Missouri, son of Elizabeth Starr &amp; Lamar Lampkin. 

He attended Benton High School, and was working at National Beef in St. Joseph. He attended the Word of Life Church and St. Francis Baptist Temple Church. 

Daurice was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Starr.

Timothy Joseph McLarney, 58 of Savannah passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in Savannah MO. He was born in St. Joseph on December 26, 1965 to John and Floella (Ferguson) McLarney. &nbsp;

Tim enjoyed baseball and football games with his family. &nbsp;

Survivors include his mother Floella McLarney of Savannah; uncle, Harlan and Francis Ferguson of Loveland, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John McLarney; brother, Steven McLaney; and his best friend, Dodger. &nbsp;

He was born on November 16, 1974, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Brian and Brenda (Davis) Campbell.

He attended Central High School and completed his apprenticeship through the Carpenters Local 110 union, of which he was a proud member.

Scott enjoyed being in the outdoors, whether it was on the water with his fishing rod or tending to his garden. He could also be found at the bowling alley, enjoying a favorite pastime.

Scott loved working with his hands and using his talents to build handcrafted items. He was a proud father of five daughters and enjoyed making countless memories with them.

Scott had a genuine, loving spirit and will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ethan and Mary Campbell, maternal grandmother, Patsy Butcher, and great-grandparents.

Survivors include his parents, Brian and Brenda Campbell; his children, Shelby Campbell, Ecella Campbell, Paislea Campbell, and Maggie Campbell; stepdaughter, Denali Stovall; brother, Brad Campbell (April); nephews, Carder and Ian Campbell, and extended family and friends.

Nakoma Gomer 24, of Hiawatha, KS, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in Hiawatha, KS. He was born November 18, 1998 in Leavenworth, KS. 

He attended Doniphan West High School, and he enjoyed wrestling in high school. He also enjoyed fishing, power lifting, and hanging out with his grandpa and friends. 

Nakoma was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, William Gomer. 

Survivors include; father, Sean Askins, mother, Tonya White, Highland, KS, son, Zander Dean Gomer, maternal grandmother, Eloise Gomer, sisters, Cheyenne Brown, Cherish Gomer, and Tawny Askins.

Mr. Gomer will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.
