One man suffered what St. Joseph police call a
non-life-threatening wound in a weekend shooting.

Sunday morning in the 400 block of 16th Street.

The person wounded suffered a single gunshot wound and has been

A law enforcement quarter-cent sales tax increase will be taken to a vote tomorrow to increase funding to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheriff Bill Puett says the Sheriff’s Department has been behind in offering competitive wages for quite some time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We need more resources and we also need to try to get our wages up to a competitive level to make sure we retain quality people and we quite losing quality trained individuals to other agencies and other professions,” Puett tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Puett says he wants to address some of the issues facing our community with the tax.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We just apricate everybody's support and like I said we just want to continue to do outstanding things, serve our community and make sure that we make it a better safer place for everybody to live,” says Puett.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Puett says they need this funding to help keep quality trained employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“All the information is coming in so we need some more resources to deal with this massive&nbsp;amount&nbsp;of drugs and fugitives and things that keep coming into our community,” says Puett.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Puett, the current law enforcement sales tax was implemented in the 90s and is a quarter-cent sales tax, generating 3.6 million dollars annually. He adds, with a quarter-cent increase, the additional 3.6 million will provide around 18 new positions in addition to salary increases. In order to pass, the tax needs a simple majority vote from constituents. If the tax passes, it will not have a sunset clause.&nbsp;

The ATV swerved and the driver overcorrected. The ATV traveled off the south side of the road, struck a barbed wire fence and came to rest on its top.

2 NW Missouri teens injured in ATV accident

BUCHANN COUNTY—A Missouri teen died in an accident just after 9:30p.m. Saturday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;2004 Honda CRF250R driven by a 14-year-old Savannah boy was northbound on the Belt Highway at Northridge Drive in St. Joseph.

The motorcycle struck a southbound 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Anna S. Allison, 34, St. Joseph, who was slowing to turn east onto Northridge Drive from Belt Highway.

Buchanan County EMS transported the teen to Mosaic Life Care where he was pronounced dead. Allison, who was properly restrained at the time of the accident, was not injured. The teen was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Cameron EMS transported the teen to Cameron Regional Medical Center. She was&nbsp; properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY —A Missouri man died in an accident just before 9a.m. Friday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Chevy Truck driven by David W. Cruth, 68, was southbound on U.S. 71 south of 224th Street.

The vehicle struck a 1999 Ford Dump Truck driven by Kelton D. Emery, 22, Maryville, who was stopped in the intersection.

Nodaway County EMS transported Cruth, Emery to Mosaic in Maryville where Cruth died. Nodaway County EMS transported passenger in the Chevy Neal R. Hacker, 43, Elmo, to Mosaic in St. Joseph. Cruth was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.&nbsp;

Missouri man dies after crash into dump truck

CLINTON COUNTY —Four people were injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Friday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Landrover driven by Stacie R. Traxler, 41, Centerville, IA., was southbound on Interstate 35 one mile north of Holt.

The Landrover rear-ended a 2017 Ford passenger vehicle driven by John D. Copeland, 60, Chillicothe, who had slowed for traffic congestion.

A 2019 Buick driven by David J. Mclaughlin, 74, Debuque, IA., rear-ended the Landrover and then struck a 2018 Subaru driven by Betty L. Dignan, 73, Cameron.

EMS transported Traxler to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

EMS also transported a passenger in the Landrover Natasha K. Repp, 40, Centerville, IA, Mclaughlin and a passenger in the Buick Sharon L. McLaughlin, 74, Debuque, IA to Liberty Hospital.

4 hospitalized after 4-vehicle NW Missouri crash

After coming back from a seven-run and a five-run deficit in their previous two postseason games this week, the St. Joseph Mustangs were the ones to take a big lead Friday.

And this time, there was no drama at the end.

The Mustangs' offense got rolling in the middle of the game, behind a quality start from pitcher Braden Berry, and St. Joseph won its seventh MINK League title with a 12-2 victory over Sedalia Friday at Phil Welch Stadium in the second game of the championship series.

The seven championships are more than any other team in the MINK League.

"There's so many local kids (on this team) who grew up watching the Mustangs," coach Johnny Coy said, winning his second MINK League title as the team's head man. "They got to experience it as fans, and now they get to experience it as players. They really wanted it bad, and that just shows you the kind of fight that they have and how tough they were all season long."

Berry is one of those locals, and he did not disappoint in the Mustangs' final game of the season.

After spotting Sedalia (21-19) an early run in the first, Berry settled in, striking out six and walking only two over six innings pitched.

"I just wanted to do it for the city of St. Joseph," said Berry, a graduate of St. Joseph Central High School. "They've supported me through high school and everything until now. I mean, it means everything to me."

Offensively, St. Joseph was slow to start, getting just one hit through the first three innings. Things began to click in the fourth inning, as the Mustangs (26-20) scored four runs in that frame.

Jake Grauberger led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, and three Mustangs were hit by a pitch in that inning, allowing them to take a 4-1 lead.

The&nbsp; Bombers got a run back in the top of the fifth, but the Mustangs scored two more runs in both the fifth and sixth inning, and finished the job with four runs on three hits in the seventh.

An RBI single by Michael Paule scored Cole Slibowski from third to end the game in mercy rule.

In all, seven Mustangs hit and eight of them scored. Slibowski was 2-of-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Grauberger, Paule and Kissane each had a pair of hits as well.

All of this in front of a solid crowd of 2,246 fans.

"The fans are such a huge part of it," Coy said. "I don't think they realize how big of a part they play in this. Whenever we go on the road, there's not a lot of fans and not a lot of energy. And these fans, we feed off of them every single year. Without the fans, I don't know if the Mustangs would be what it is. We're always going to be grateful for our fans."

Mustangs pull away from Sedalia, run rule Bombers for team's seventh MINK title

Thousands have attended the opening days of the Kansas City
Chiefs Training Camp on the Missouri Western State University campus in St.
Joseph.

St. Joseph Chamber President Patt Lilly says training camp is
always an exciting time for St. Joseph.

“To be a resident here and enjoy the Chiefs and all that
brings, certainly from an economic standpoint it gives a really nice shot in
the arm to the community and gives a lot of folks an opportunity to experience
St. Joseph,” Lilly tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce is working to welcome those
from out of town to explore the city while they’re here.

The Red Rally is tonight at Coleman Hawkins Park in the Felix
Street Square in downtown St. Joseph, sponsored by Mosaic Life Care and the St.
Joseph Downtown Association. The Red Rally is being held in conjunction with
the “Sounds of Summer” concern series sponsored by the St. Joseph Downtown
Association. Phil Vandel begins at 6:30 this evening.

It will look different this year, due to NFL coronavirus pandemic
protocols. No coaches or players will be in attendance, though KC Wolf and Max
the Griffon will be on hand. There will be plenty of food and drink vendors on
hand.

Lilly says it’s evident the Chiefs have been pleased with the
move the team made from River Falls, Wisconsin to St. Joseph years ago.

“I think the proximity to their fan base here is a really
great thing. I think they get that, certainly,” Lilly says. “I’m not taking
anything away from River Falls, but that was pretty far away from the fan base.
But right here, you’re right in the middle of it here in St. Joseph.”

The atmosphere of the training camp for an NFL team makes a
difference as well.

Fans can sit on the aluminum risers or on the new end zone
berm, relax, and watch the offense or the defense run through a series of drills,
including seven-on-seven drills.

Lilly says the Chiefs Training Camp reminds him of trips to
his grandparents in Florida during baseball spring training.

“It was just so much fun, because of the informality of it,
just the ease of it, if you will,” Lilly says. “It’s not like having to go to a
big stadium, get parking, walk forever, the huge crowds. Even though certainly
we have our crowds here at Chiefs camp, just the atmosphere is so enjoyable. I
hope people will get out and enjoy it while they’re here.”

It started Monday with a 5-3 win over Chillicothe in the wildcard round. The Mustangs got behind 3-1 in the fifth, but scored four runs in the seventh and eighth to eventually win.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs traveled to Clarinda to face the first-place A's in the divisional round - another win or go home scenario.

Clarinda, who had beaten St. Joseph eight times already in the regular season, led 7-0 after the first inning.

Starting pitcher Mack Stephenson stayed the course, and kept Clarinda scoreless for five innings after that. Then, the Mustangs were down 7-2. Then 7-5 heading to the ninth.

A two-run RBI single by Sam Kissane tied it and a sac fly by Jaxon Himel scored Ike Book for the go-ahead run.

Brayden Loving pitched the final inning, and just like that, St. Joseph beat Clarinda 8-7, ending the A's season at 37-6.

"The way that they fought back," I was super proud of them win or lose," said head coach Johnny Coy. "But, being able to pull it out and actually win the game was incredible. We had so many fans there. We were all just super excited. It was an overall great night."

Hard to top that, right? Well, the Mustangs tried to on Wednesday. Playing at Sedalia in the first game of the MINK League Championship Series, the Mustangs were down 7-2 entering the ninth.

With nobody on and two outs, the Mustangs got two runners in scoring position with a walk, a balk and a hit-by-pitch.

RBIs by Sean O'Malley, Sam Kissane and Noah Bodenhausen tied the game. An RBI single to left by Lafayette alum Cole Slibowski gave St. Joseph the lead at 8-7.

Loving pitched another scoreless ninth to put the bow on it.

"I have a lot of faith in my teammates," Bodenhausen said. "We never lost hope, but that's just unheard of."

Unheard of, but not impossible. The Mustangs are back home with a chance to win their seventh MINK League title on Friday. And if not Friday, then Saturday.

If the Mustangs lose Friday's game, which starts at 7 p.m., they would come back and host a third game on Saturday at 7 as well.

Many of Coy's younger players who are from the area, like Noah Bodenhausen or Chase Spoonmore or Ike Book, were fans in the stands watching the Mustangs win MINK League titles in 2014, '15, '17 and '19.

"They want to bring that same excitement to the fans that they were able to witness as fans themselves," Coy said. "They're super excited. We're ready to go."

Several guys on this year's roster, like St. Joseph Central alum Dawson Smith, West Platte grad Mack Stephenson and Mid-Buchanan alum Brady Holden were on the 2019 roster - the team that got the Mustangs their sixth league championship.

Now two years later, Holden hopes to deliver for the fans again.

"Growing up, we actually hosted Mustangs players," Holden said. "I was on the 2019 team that won the championship, so just getting the chance to try and repeat as champions is a pretty crazy feeling."

Mustangs look to finish playoff thrill ride with MINK League Championship

CALDWELL COUNTY—A Missouri teen was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Thursday in Caldwell County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Isaiah L. Dodge, 18, Kidder, was westbound on Old U.S. 36 four miles east of Cameron.

The Jeep traveled off the south side of the road, struck a fence and overturned.

Caldwell County ambulance transported Dodge to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri teen hospitalized after Jeep rollover accident

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Stephen D. Doby, 50, Crowley, Texas, was southbound on Interstate 35 just south of Holt.

The motorcycle rear-ended a trailer of a 2013 Ford F150 driven by John R. Ferstl, 54, Oakdale, Minnesota, who was stopped in construction zone traffic.

Doby was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics.&nbsp; Ferstl was not injured. Doby was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Peterbilt 337 driven by Dennis L. Anderson, 63, Omaha, was eastbound on MO 46 nine miles east of Fairfax.

The truck traveled off the south side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The truck returned to the road, skidded off the north side of the road, struck and embankment and overturned.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Anderson to Community Hospital in Fairfax. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph voters next Tuesday will decide a half-cent sales
tax designed to upgrade the city parks system.

City officials estimate the tax would generate between $50 and
$60 million over its 10-year lifespan. The tax has a 10-year sunset clause.

Chair Chris Clark with the St. Joseph Committee to Restore Our
Parks says the committee is composed of members who discussed what can be done
to improve the current parks system.

“Everyone has seen the shape that they’ve turn into over time.
They’ve slowly gotten worse and worse,” Clark tells St. Joseph Parks. “The Parks
(Dept.) budget continues to kind of decrease as well. They’re being asked to do
more with less. They’re having a hard time staffing people. They’re having
equipment that’s breaking down. So, they’re not able to maintain to the level
that we would like and level that we would expect.”

Clark also serves on an advisory board to the St. Joseph
Parks, Recreation, and Civic Facilities Department. That advisory board helped
the department settle on a list of improvements that would be funded through
the tax increase, which he says grew out of a discussion on what could be done
to improve the current park system. Members of that advisory board then decided
to form a committee to promote the half-cent sales tax, according to Clark.

Clark says St. Joseph residents are understandably proud of
their park system, but he adds that system has been allowed to deteriorate over
the years.

“I think people are proud of what we’ve got. We have a very
robust park system,” Clark says. “But I think if anybody spends any time in any
of these facilities, they’re going to walk in and they’re going to walk through
and realize that there are some issues that need to be addressed.”

The City of St. Joseph has a list of proposed projects on its
website. [Click <a href="https://www.stjoemo.info/1001/Proposed-Parks-Projects">here</a> for the list.] It is highlighted by nearly $12.8 million in
improvements to Krug Park. The extra funds would pay for $8.8 million in
improvements to the Noyes Complex, $3 million to the Bode Sports Complex, $2.8
million for Hyde Park, $2.5 million for the Northside Complex, $2.1 million for
the Civic Arena, among many other projects.

Approximately $4.5 million would be set aside for parks maintenance.

Clark urges residents to step up and support a proposal
designed to upgrade one of the city’s greatest assets.

“Too many times people say I wish they would do this, I wish
someone would do this, they need to fix that,” Clark says. “I think everyone needs
to realize that ‘they’ and ‘someone’ is us.”

The mother of a northwest Missouri five-month-old who died in
February has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child for not
reporting the suspected abuse.

Thirty-three-year-old Emily Huntsman faces two felony abuse
charges.

The father of Jaxon Ray Livingston is charged with killing the
child.

Law enforcement responded to a home in Gower on February 12th
to find Jaxon unresponsive. Doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City
reported the infant suffered from abusive head trauma.

His father, 24-year-old Dillon Livingston, claimed the boy was
injured when he rolled out of a recliner. Later, Livingston confessed during an
interview with the Missouri Children’s Division he had handled the baby too forcefully
when he became fussy, according to the probable cause statement.

Livingston faces a second-degree murder charge in the death.

Now, Huntsman has been charged with endangering the welfare of
a child. Investigators accuse Huntsman of observing bruises on the infant and
the infant’s twin prior to the death. Authorities accuse Huntsman of failing to
report the abuse, which she first observed in November of last year.

The St. Joseph School District gears up for yet another year of school&nbsp;amidst&nbsp;pandemic.&nbsp;

Superintendent Doug Van Zyl says this school year will look very similar to last year’s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Many of the same practices are going to be in place as far as cleaning and trying to keep students as&nbsp;separated&nbsp;as we can&nbsp;even though of course the distance is a little bit&nbsp;different,” Van Zyl tells St. Joseph Post. “Masking will be one of the things that we’ll probably continue to&nbsp;have to monitor and take a look at.&nbsp;Currently&nbsp;we are mask optional, but that's something that will probably get decided closer to the start of school, to be finalized.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says the school district will still provide a virtual learning option.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“All of our schools have the&nbsp;face-to-face&nbsp;option as well but families had the choice to be able to sign up&nbsp;to be online or&nbsp;virtual&nbsp;if they chose to,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says he hopes people will weight their options and decide what they want to do.&nbsp;

“That’s what’s really going to help us, is just people making the decisions to make good choices in regard to their&nbsp;health and what they think is the right thing to do not only for them but for those around them,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Van Zyl says&nbsp;remote learning is still an option for the school district if and when it might be necessary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I hope and pray that we don’t get to the point where&nbsp;we have to go back to where we were over a year and a half ago back when COVID first kind of came on&nbsp;and everything got shut down that wouldn’t be something that I think any of us would want but I do think there’s&nbsp;a possibility for some remote adjustments throughout the year if cases continue to rise,” says Van Zyl.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All schools in the St. Joseph School District will start on August 23rd.&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chrysler Town &amp; Country driven by Heather M. Stoneberger, 50, King City, was southbound on U.S. 169 at Woodbine in St. Joseph.

The vehicle rear-ended a 2019 Ford E450 driven by Richard J. Curtin, 44, St. Joseph. Both vehicle came to a controlled stop in a private parking lot.&nbsp; A private vehicle transported Stonebarger to Mosaic Life Care. Curtin was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman hospitalized after rear-end crash

The first full day of Chiefs training camp is in the books.

The whole team was on hand for the first full day of camp Wednesday morning. The Chiefs practiced in helmets and shorts at the Mosaic Training Fields for about two hours on a very warm day.

Heat indices were touching the mid 90s by the end of practice. Head coach Andy Reid says the training staff has done a great job making sure that players are staying safe in the heat.

"Our trainers do a great job making sure guys are hydrated," Reid said. "They test them prior and give them water breaks during practice. And once guys get to an x-number of plays, the trainers run in and give them a little water."

The heat did not stop around 3,000-4,000 Chiefs season ticket holders from taking in the practice. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt says it just feels right to be back at Missouri Western for the camp with the fans on hand.

"It's so great to have our fans back at training camp," Hunt said. "I can think back to my experience as a kid coming to training camp with my dad and how special that is. It was great to see so many of our season-ticket holders here today."

A handful of players were held out of practice. Long snapper James Winchester and running back Darwin Thompson are in COVID protocol.

 Right guard Kyle Long is out with a knee injury. Coach Reid says he likely won’t practice again until after camp is over.

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens also tweaked his hamstring at Wednesday's practice. Others who were held out include safety Armani Watts (foot) and defensive end Malik Herring (knee).

One linemen who’s stepped up in Long’s absence is rookie Trey Smith out of Tennessee, who played the right guard spot to start camp. Reid says Smith has been very consistent so far.

"He showed enough to legitimately be in that position right now," Reid said. "He's got to compete. So, we'll see how all of that goes once we get the pads on."

Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Orlando Brown Jr. and Mike Remmers joined Smith along the offensive line during first-team reps.

Linebacker Willie Gay, who's coming off of a torn meniscus this past winter, was one of the defensive standouts Wednesday, knocking down a couple of passes during both seven-on-seven and the 11-on-11 drills.

Chris Jones was switching between defensive tackle and defensive end throughout the morning Wednesday.

"You know, we're loaded," safety Tyrann Mathieu said of the offense. "It requires all of us on the back end to really put the work in. We're going against one of the best offenses in the league, and so every day we work with each other is only going to make us better."

The Chiefs practice again Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The Chiefs practiced in helmets and shorts at the Mosaic Training Fields for about two hours on a very warm day.Heat indices were touching the mid 90s by the end of practice. Head coach Andy Reid says the training staff has done a great job making sure that players are staying safe in the heat."Our trainers do a great job making sure guys are hydrated," Reid said. "They test them prior and give them water breaks during practice. And once guys get to an x-number of plays, the trainers run in and give them a little water."The heat did not stop around 3,000-4,000 Chiefs season ticket holders from taking in the practice. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt says it just feels right to be back at Missouri Western for the camp with the fans on hand."It's so great to have our fans back at training camp," Hunt said. "I can think back to my experience as a kid coming to training camp with my dad and how special that is. It was great to see so many of our season-ticket holders here today."A handful of players were held out of practice. Long snapper James Winchester and running back Darwin Thompson are in COVID protocol. Right guard Kyle Long is out with a knee injury. Coach Reid says he likely won’t practice again until after camp is over.Linebacker Anthony Hitchens also tweaked his hamstring at Wednesday's practice. Others who were held out include safety Armani Watts (foot) and defensive end Malik Herring (knee).One linemen who’s stepped up in Long’s absence is rookie Trey Smith out of Tennessee, who played the right guard spot to start camp. Reid says Smith has been very consistent so far."He showed enough to legitimately be in that position right now," Reid said. "He's got to compete. So, we'll see how all of that goes once we get the pads on."Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Orlando Brown Jr. and Mike Remmers joined Smith along the offensive line during first-team reps.Other standoutsLinebacker Willie Gay, who's coming off of a torn meniscus this past winter, was one of the defensive standouts Wednesday, knocking down a couple of passes during both seven-on-seven and the 11-on-11 drills.Chris Jones was switching between defensive tackle and defensive end throughout the morning Wednesday.Receivers Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman each hauled in some deep passes from Patrick Mahomes. Chiefs complete first full day of training camp on a warm Wednesday

A search is underway for the next Athletic Director at
Missouri Western State University.

Josh Looney will be leaving the St. Joseph campus to take a
similar position at the University of North Alabama in Florence September
first.

Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy says the ideal
candidate must have the same personality, drive, and ambition Looney displayed.

“Also, it’s very important to me that someone have a sense of
wanting to join the St. Joseph community,” Kennedy says, pointing out Looney
and his family integrated into the St. Joseph community. “Me, personally, it’s
very important to me that this is someone who can come into our community, work
not only with our folks on campus, but also high schools, middle schools, those
kinds of things; really get the entire community into Missouri Western and what
our mission is.”

Kennedy says the university will use a search firm to find a
replacement. An interim Athletic Director will be named in the meantime.

very confident we will find that individual.”Kennedy
says improvements to the St. Joseph campus made at the request of the Kansas
City Chiefs for their training camp makes Missouri Western look more like a
NCAA Division I program than a Division II program. Kennedy acknowledges the
fact that the St. Joseph campus hosts the Kansas City Chiefs training camp is a
selling point.“But you
can feel the excitement. You can see it. You look out the window (of Spratt Stadium)
and you see where they’re going to be practicing,” Kennedy points out the
Chiefs draw thousands to the campus. “What an opportunity for an AD to come in,
to connect, to recruit, to fundraise, to engage with our community. It hits all
the bells and whistles right off the bat.”She says she wants a candidate with the same personality,
drive, and ambition Looney displayed during his tenure.
