On Wednesday, Jan 14 authorities in Atchison County served a search warrant in Westboro, MO, which resulted in a drug arrest.

Atchison County deputies, along with members of the Northwest Missouri Drug Task Force, reportedly discovered controlled substances in the residence.

One person was arrested and placed on a 24-hour hold

A warrant was issued for Frank Kephart for Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Resisting Arrest.

Westboro, MO resident arrested on drug charges

To ensure the fair distribution of resources, the Pet Pantry Program will transition to a scheduled monthly drive-up clinic format beginning Feb. 1. 

The City of St. Joseph says this change is designed to better serve the community and keep pets with their families by reducing surrenders due to financial hardship.

The first three clinics are scheduled for Feb. 9, March 9, and April 13. All sessions will run from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

The program provides temporary assistance with donated pet food and supplies for community members experiencing financial difficulties. Because the pantry relies entirely on donations, supplies are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and the program cannot guarantee specific brands, types or flavors of food.

Under the new guidelines, food will be pre-packaged based on available inventory. Participants will receive one portion per pet, with a limit of three portions per species for each household. Distribution is limited to once per month per household. To ensure equitable access, staff may request basic information, including the participant's name, contact information, and the number and species of pets in the home.

Clark says this program is vital for small businesses because not everyone coming for the World Cup may be familiar with payment standards and practices here. 

“We want everybody to be prepared so they can take advantage of this and not miss out on opportunities with systems that are not capable or misunderstandings of how our international guests might perceive things,” Clark explains. 

Other topics covered through the program include alternative forms of payment and language accessibility, and cultural awareness.

Commerce Bank helping prepare small businesses ahead of World Cup

Following the success of their inaugural meeting in late 2025, the City of St. Joseph hosted its second Student in Government Day on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at emPowerU.

The event marked a transition from broad brainstorming to concrete action, as students from across the district returned to refine the local improvement goals they identified during their first session.

During the workshop, students engaged in direct dialogue with City Manager Mike Schumacher and other leaders from around St. Joe. The discussion focused on how to turn student-led ideas into reality, providing the youth a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of local government and advocate for the specific needs of their demographic.

The most significant outcome of the meeting was the formalization of a new youth coalition, dubbed the "Student Voice Alliance," the group will consist of 15 students from local schools. The group is designed to ensure that the momentum generated during these workshops continues year-round rather than being a one-time event.

Moving forward, the Student Voice Alliance will meet monthly at City Hall. These regular sessions will allow the student representatives to work closely with city officials to address their ideas, ensuring that the younger generation has a permanent and influential seat at the table in St. Joseph’s civic planning.

Schumacher says communicating with young people is key to addressing the topics. "Students will lead this discussion. We need to be prepared to listen in order to work on what they want to see. We need to learn from them."

Schumacher adds that he's encouraged by the students' interest in the city. "They are well informed and they know what's going on. And they would really like to see movement in certain areas in St. Joe."

Students short-listed a variety of topics, some of which include addressing homelessness, community cleanliness, and the downtown area.

The next meeting of the Student Voice Alliance is slated for Feb. 11.

St. Joseph students and city leaders launch "Student Voice Alliance" to drive local change

Former Platte County Commissioner John Elliott announced his bid for Missouri State Representative in District 13 today, aiming to succeed Rep. Sean Pouche.

The district comprises parts of Platte and Buchanan counties.

"I’m running to bring common sense conservative leadership from Platte County to Jefferson City," Elliott said, identifying his core goals as "standing with law enforcement, fixing a broken property tax system, protecting life, and defending Missouri land and agriculture from foreign control."

According to a press release from Elliot's campaign, public safety serves as a cornerstone of his platform. Elliott noted that his local community "depends on strong law enforcement to maintain our quality of life," promising he "will back the men and women who keep us safe and push back against policies that weaken public safety." He also extended this focus to food security, asserting that "foreign ownership of agricultural land and critical infrastructure is a growing concern" and that "Missouri families and farmers—not foreign governments—should control our land and food supply."

Reflecting on his previous experience in county government and his background as a small business owner, Elliott emphasized his connection to the district. "My wife Julie and I understand the challenges local businesses face," he said, adding that he intends to be "a voice for families and family-owned businesses—not corporate insiders in Jefferson City."

Elliott also signaled his alignment with state-level tax reform, backing the elimination of the state income tax. Closing with a nod to his conservative philosophy, he quoted Ronald Reagan’s warning that "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction," concluding that he intends "to do all I can to pass that torch to the next generation."

Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville is launching a series of events this month to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The university is joining the national “America250” initiative, a multiyear celebration leading up to the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Organizers say the programming is designed to connect the nation's founding ideals to the history and people of Missouri.

“While we often think about the founding of this country as a story centered in the East Coast, the ideas and concerns of the American Revolution and the Founding Fathers impacted people across time and place,” said Elyssa Ford, a history professor at Northwest.

The initial events coincide with the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week. All activities are free and open to the public.

Programming begins Wednesday, Jan. 21, with the opening of “Deconstructing the Block,” an art exhibit by Norman Spencer in the DeLuce Art Gallery. Spencer will host a fireside chat at noon in the J.W. Jones Student Union and deliver a lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Charles Johnson Theater. The exhibit runs through Feb. 27.

Also on Jan. 21, Ford will lead a 4 p.m. discussion in the Student Union regarding the history of Emancipation Day in Nodaway County. The talk will explore how local African American communities celebrated the end of slavery between the 1880s and 1930s.

On Jan. 29, the university will begin a weekly reading group focused on Jeffrey Rosen’s book, “The Pursuit of Liberty: How Hamilton vs. Jefferson Ignited the Lasting Battle over Power in America.” The sessions, led by political science professor Mariliz Kastberg-Leonard, will meet Thursdays at 4 p.m. in the Valk Center.

The America250 activities are being coordinated by Ford, Kastberg-Leonard, English instructor Daniel Biegelson, and Shay Malone, assistant vice president of institutional excellence and global engagement. Additional events will be announced throughout the spring and fall semesters.

Northwest Missouri State University joins national America250 celebration

Utility conflicts and weather delays have pushed back the first phase of a major intersection improvement project at U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street in Buchanan County, transportation officials announced.

Aminos Brothers Co. Inc., working in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Transportation, began Stage 1 of the project in April 2025. While originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, a combination of contractor scheduling issues and environmental factors has moved the target completion date for this phase to March 2026.

Crews have successfully realigned Alabama Street east of Route 59. Current work focuses on paving roadway transitions and establishing temporary access for local businesses. Before the roadway fully reopens for this stage, crews will install temporary signage and traffic markings along Route 59.

The project will transition into Stages 2 and 3 once the current phase is finalized. MoDOT officials stated that specific details regarding the upcoming stages will be released prior to the change in traffic patterns.

Construction is scheduled to take place Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The entire project, which encompasses improvements to the intersection of Route 59, Missouri Route 752, and Buchanan County Route U, is expected to be finished by spring 2027.

Officials noted that all work is weather-permitting and schedules may change as construction progresses.

In his latest budget recommendation, Kehoe requested an additional $63.2 million to support the international event. The majority of these funds are expected to come from federal sources, pushing the state’s total investment in the World Cup past the $150 million mark.

The proposal includes a significant deployment of the Missouri National Guard to assist local agencies. Funding is also earmarked for the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency to provide a mix of security, traffic control, and medical services at matches and official fan events.

Kehoe framed the security surge as a necessity for the state's reputation, noting that the global spotlight offers a unique opportunity to showcase Missouri. He emphasized during his budget presentation that the state must ensure the safety of visitors and residents to successfully present Kansas City to the world.

The heightened security measures come as Kansas City prepares for an influx of hundreds of thousands of international visitors. State officials say the coordinated effort between the National Guard and state agencies is designed to ensure that both the sporting events and the surrounding festivities remain secure.

MO Governor details multi-million dollar security surge for World Cup

After a successful event last year in February, the St. Joseph Museums is going bigger this year with Nothing says Love Like Murder.  

The first night of the event will be a repeat of the popular event that came in the inaugural year, forensic night at the Glore Psychiatric Museum.  

Visitor Experiences Coordinator Jerrad Hardin says Tori Zieger will be on hand to guide people through a unique experience  

“Tori is a bone specialist, and she’s going to teach people the fundamentals of forensics with replica skulls of real victims,” Hardin says on the KFEQmunnity show.  “So, not for everyone, but if you really like forensics and murder science you might want to come and check this one out.” 

The first event will be on Saturday, February 7th.  Hardin says registration is limited and does go quickly.  

Hardin says then, the day before Valentines, you can travel down to the Wyeth Tootle Mansion, for a fun and interactive experience 

“Murder mystery at the mansion which happens on February 13th at 6pm,” Hardin explains.  “That’s really just an educational program about the history of St. Joe while we challenge you to try to determine who killed Charles Bender.” 

Hardin says the experience is similar to playing a large version of the board game Clue 

“Takes 60 minutes and the same rules essentially apply, but in this case it’s all about St Joseph history, the only thing that’s not real is the murder,” Hardin says. 

“For the final part of its Nothing Says Love like Murder series of events, St. Joseph Museums will open the Glore Psychiatric Museum after hours for people to walk through and experience.  

Hardin says it's a common request they hear from people to walk around the museum at night 

"This is one of those opportunities where you can come and bring your Valentine for a special Valentine’s Day after hours program,” Hardin points out.  “And it’s staff led, so we really do put people through a couple of different kind of ghost hunting things so it will be a lot of fun.”

His death came as a shock to his professor, Alex Kirt, who described him as a kind and talented young man. The organization, familiar with hunger from Irish history, chose to assist Second Harvest as a way to give back to the community. The chapter's dedication to helping others extends beyond a single donation, with funds also allocated from the St. Patrick's Day parade. While the exact date for this year's parade is not set, it is expected to take place in mid-March.

The Falls City Council approved chicken permit applications for several residents at their January 5th meeting after a public hearing with no comments. They did not take action on a request for a burn permit for brush piles in a pasture behind a resident's house. The Council sought advice from the Falls City Volunteer Fire Department regarding the burn permit request. A burn ban is in place in Falls City, requiring Council approval for open burns, which must also be approved by the Fire Department.

Missouri Western State University will host a Military Suicide Prevention Training Day on Wednesday, Jan. 14, to provide specialized intervention tools for the campus and local community. 

The event will take place in Murphy Hall, room 201.

The program aims to equip professionals and educators with the skills necessary to assist those who have served in the armed forces. Gabbie Falletta, director of the Center for Military and Veterans Services, emphasized that the initiative is about building a proactive network of support.

“This training day is focused on strengthening our collective ability to recognize risk, respond appropriately, and connect service members, veterans, and students with the support they deserve,” Falletta said.

The university has organized the training into three distinct sessions tailored to specific professional roles:

The event is a collaborative effort sponsored by the MoWest Center for Military and Veterans Services, the MoWest Counseling Center, the MoWest Social Work program, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The St. Joseph Performing Arts Association has announced the creation of a new award, and also awarded the first winners of said award, honoring donors committed to growing the arts in St. Joseph.

&nbsp;The inaugural award was presented to Pat and Carroll Cathey in recognition of their extraordinary advocacy and dedication to the Performing Arts Association and the cultural life of the community.&nbsp; The award was formally introduced at the Association’s monthly board meeting on August 8th at the historic Wyeth Tootle Mansion. 

Pat Cathey served on the Performing Arts Association board several years back and was chair of the Programming Committee, where her leadership played a key role in bringing high-quality, nationally recognized performances to St. Joseph. Together, Pat and Carroll Cathey have been steadfast supporters of the Performing Arts Association, continuing their advocacy even today.&nbsp; Carroll Cathey passed away in late 2025. 

The creation of this award serves not only as a recognition of the couple’s shared passion for the arts and their belief in the power of live performance to strengthen our community.&nbsp; The Pat and Carroll Cathey Award will be presented in the future to donors whose support extends beyond generosity.

“This award is an effort to turn the spotlight off the stage and onto the people who make the performances possible,” said Paul “Gibby” Gibson, President of the Performing Arts Association in a news release from the Association. “Our donors deserve attention, respect, and appreciation for their commitment. This honor exists to recognize individuals whose support goes beyond generosity and becomes a true partnership.”

After 43 years of serving families around northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas, the program has now assisted more than 100,000 individuals, providing holiday supporting to families and individuals in need during the Christmas season.

The Adopt-A-Family program began in 1983 following a heartfelt request shared on local radio. A K-Jo DJ encouraged listeners to consider adopting real people in need for Christmas rather than popular holiday toys like Cabbage Patch Kids. The first year, 243 individuals were adopted through the program.

Since its inception, the Adopt-A-Family program has connected thousands of donors with families and individuals in need, ensuring that children wake up to gifts on Christmas morning and households have essential items during the holiday season. Each year, community members, businesses, and volunteers come together to provide gifts, clothing, food, and household necessities, reinforcing the spirit of generosity and solidarity that defines the program.

Adopt-A-Family surpasses 100,000 helped in Christmas program

Kansas currently holds the highest number of confirmed bird flu infections in the United States, with recent outbreaks in two northeast counties pushing the state’s total to more than 400,000 affected birds.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the surge in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has impacted four commercial operations and six backyard flocks across the state. The most significant loss occurred in Pottawatomie County, where a commercial egg-laying facility reported 380,000 birds affected by the virus.

In neighboring Nemaha County, officials recently confirmed the virus in a commercial gamebird flock of more than 4,000 birds. The USDA reports that 65 flocks have been impacted nationwide as the virus continues to spread through migratory bird patterns.

Despite the high number of poultry infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that the risk to the general public remains low. While the federal government has recorded 71 human cases of bird flu across the country, none have been identified in Kansas.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation, advising poultry owners to implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent further spread between commercial and wild populations.

Maryville resident Ashley Marie Farrell, 33, is facing a Class D Stealing charge in Nodaway County Court for allegedly taking cash, lottery tickets, and alcohol from an establishment between January 1, 2025, and September 28, 2024. The Probable Cause Statement revealed that Farrell was caught on video leaving with three bank bags but only deposited two at the bank, claiming one was lost. Approximately $1,100 worth of Missouri Lottery scratch-off tickets were also reported stolen. An internal investigation uncovered missing cashed-out lottery tickets and alcohol beverages. Farrell's bond was set at $10,000.

Key changes include higher PLC reference prices, a 90 percent guarantee level for ARC, and expanded base acre eligibility for farmers with historically non-program crops. USDA Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce said the delays are due to the Farm Service Agency workload and the complex nature of implementing the new federally-mandated provisions. 

According to the rule, farmers will likely know their 2026 production and yields before enrolling in PLC and ARC – a significant shift in timing that could allow more informed decisions but may compress the planning window for each U.S. producer. At the same time, enrollment in the Dairy Margin Coverage began on Monday, January 12.

Despite initial agreements, the restaurant stopped using Shatto butter shortly after opening due to pricing issues. Betty Rae's continued supplying ice cream but was asked to lower prices, leading to the termination of their partnership in October. 

The restaurant has been accused of misleading customers by using local vendors' names for marketing purposes, even after cutting ties with them.
