SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a woman's murder have made an arrest.

On Thanksgiving Day November 28, 2024, deputies in Shawnee County began an investigation into the death of 50-year-old Monica B. McKay of Tecumseh, Kansas, after she was found deceased at her home, according to Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill.

On February 11, the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division arrested 53-year-old Brian P. McKay of Tecumseh in connection with her death. He is being held on requested charges of stalking, violation of a protection order, aggravated burglary and murder in the first-degree. The sheriff's office would not release details on the relationship between the suspect and victim.

Kansas man accused of woman's Thanksgiving Day murder

KANSAS CITY —It was a deadly Monday in Kansas City. Police are investigating two homicides and have identified the victims.

Just before 6p.m., patrol&nbsp; were dispatched to the 3400 block of Wyoming on a reported shooting, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.&nbsp; Upon arrival officers located a man, later identified as 20-year-old Zykevious L. Crosby suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers began performing lifesaving measures and ordered emergency medical personnel to the scene. EMS transported the Crosby to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

This is being investigated as a homicide. 

Preliminary information revealed there was an altercation in the parking lot between multiple individuals before shots were fired. Detectives are trying to determine what led up to the incident.

At about the same time, KCPD patrol officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Hickman Mills on a reported medical nature unknown. Upon arrival officers located a man, later identified as 64-year-old Zulfiqar&nbsp;Ladhani, in the parking lot of a nearby convenience store. He suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS was ordered to the scene and Ladhani was subsequently pronounced deceased. This is also being investigated as a homicide.&nbsp; Police released no additional details late Tuesday and have not reported an arrest or possible suspect information.

Just after 1a.m. Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to a fire in a warehouse for Davin Electric at 2131 NE Grantville Road, according to fire department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

First arriving crews found a large warehouse with heavy smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire, keeping it contained to the building where it originated. No occupants were located at the time of the incident.

The total estimated loss associated with the fire is approximately $175,000, with $75,000 in property loss and $100,000 in content loss.

$175,000 damage after fire at Kansas warehouse 

WASHINGTON —On Tuesday, President Donald Trump and his Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that Witkoff left Russian airspace with Marc Fogel, an American who was detained by Russia since 2021, according to a statement from the White House.

Marc Fogel is expected to be back on American soil and reunited with family and loved ones tonight, according to the release.

White House: American teacher freed from Russian prison is home

KANSAS CITY—A jury on Friday convicted a Kansas City area man of two felonies in connection with a fatal shooting in Raytown in 2021, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.

The jury convicted 47-year-old Robert E. Matlock Jr. of 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. The jury recommended 18 years for murder and seven years for Armed Criminal Action.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2499/RMatlock_Redacted">According to court records</a>, Raytown police were dispatched to the 7700 block of Raytown Road after receiving a call from Matlock, who said he had shot his roommate who lunged at him during an argument.

Police said the shooting happened at the home the two men shared as they argued over Matlock’s decision to place a lock on a door leading to Matlock’s medical marijuana kept in the garage..

 Police arrived at the residence and found the victim suffering from several gunshots.&nbsp; Matlock also showed police a video from his phone, showing him shooting the victim.&nbsp;

An autopsy on the victim revealed gunshot wounds along his right side and the right quarter of his back.&nbsp;

“I am proud of our incredible prosecution team who worked tirelessly on this challenging case to ensure justice was served. While the defendant claimed self-defense under the castle doctrine, the prosecution team was able to show the jury those rights do not apply just because an incident occurs near someone’s bedroom door in a shared home. The prosecution team was able to help the jury understand that roommates share common areas, where the victim was standing at the time of the shooting, and deadly force is not reasonable in those situations. The team’s work on this case shows the castle doctrine cannot be used as a blanket excuse for any act of violence inside a home,”&nbsp;Prosecutor Johnson said.&nbsp;

Prison for killing roommate in dispute over locked door

TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed Republican-led legislation Tuesday that attempts to ban gender-affirming care for minors, a move a top GOP lawmaker called “reckless and senseless.”

Kelly, a Democrat, vetoed a similar bill last year, and Republicans failed to coordinate the necessary two-thirds majority to override the veto. House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Wichita Republican, said in a statement Tuesday that House Republicans were ready to override this year’s veto.

The so-called Help Not Harm Act, which restricts certain types of health care that professionals can provide to individuals younger than 18, cleared the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/30/kansas-house-a-step-closer-to-sending-anti-transgender-bill-to-democratic-governor/">House</a>&nbsp;in an 83-35 vote and the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/30/kansas-senate-easily-adopts-bill-blocking-gender-affirming-health-care-for-minors/">Senate</a>&nbsp;in a 32-8 last month. The House vote was one shy of a two-thirds majority with four Republicans absent.

“Right now, the Legislature should be focused on ways to help Kansans cope with rising prices. That is the most important issue for Kansans. That is where my focus is,” Kelly said in a statement.

Senate President Ty Masterson, an Andover Republican, said the Senate is prepared to “swiftly override her veto before the ink from her pen is dry.”

Hawkins said House Republicans were “ready to override this reckless and senseless veto.”

<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb63/" target="_blank">Senate Bill 63</a>&nbsp;would prohibit gender-affirming care recommended or performed in response to gender dysphoria, the psychological distress that arises when a person’s biological sex and gender identity differ. Gender-affirming care includes the prescription of puberty blockers and hormones, along with surgery. The bill would forbid the use of taxpayer dollars for promotion or education on gender transition. It also would allow civil penalties for health care workers found to be in violation.

Kelly said it is not a politician’s role “to stand between a parent and a child who needs medical care of any kind.” Kelly said the legislation, if her veto is overridden, would drive Kansas families, business and health professionals out of the state. She added that the Legislature’s support of the act was “disappointing.”

Hawkins said Kelly’s veto was a choice of “partisan politics over the safety and wellbeing of our Kansas children.” Masterson pinned the veto on Kelly’s “extreme, left-wing ideology.”

Brittany Jones, a lobbyist for the anti-abortion organization Kansas Family Voice who testified in favor of the Help Not Harm Act in hearings last month, encouraged lawmakers to override the veto.

“Kansas children deserve better than harmful experimentation and life-altering procedures,” she said in a Tuesday news release. “This bill merely regulates a medical procedure which is well within the legislature’s jurisdiction.”

Some opponents have called into question the constitutionality of the Help Not Harm Act if it becomes law because of a Kansas Supreme Court decision on abortion that affirmed a right to bodily autonomy. Democrats have opposed the bill in committee hearings and floor debates.

Kansas governor vetoes gender-affirming care ban for minors; Republicans ready for override

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged child sex crimes involving a staff member at an elementary school in Lawrence and learned of more victims.

On Saturday, police in Lawrence launched&nbsp;an investigation into an alleged sexual assault of two students at Prairie Park Elementary, according to police spokesperson Laura McCabe.

A concerned parent of one student called police Saturday morning about events that occurred during the school day on February 7. Investigators quickly uncovered evidence that led to the Saturday night arrest of 60-year-old Mark Elliott Gridley.&nbsp; &nbsp;He is a Speech and Language Pathologist at the school.

Monday morning, investigators learned of a second possible victim.&nbsp; That alleged assault also occurred Friday morning at the school.

On Tuesday, police confirmed there are more than two victims in this investigation, according to McCabe. Police did not provide an exact number. Each parental concern brought to the attention of police must be fully investigated, which takes time. 

The team of police investigators, in conjunction with experts from the Children’s Advocacy Center of Douglas County, are working to investigate all information received. 

The scope of the investigation has now expanded to include students who were not receiving services for speech at the school. Police are asking for parents of students at Prairie Park Elementary School to have a conversation with their children about any possible contact with Mark Gridley. Should concerns arise at any point in those conversations, police ask that parents stop the conversation and contact the investigations hotline set up for this investigation at (785) 830-7430.

Police are working closely with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Douglas County, USD 497 administrators, and the District Attorney’s office to ensure all expert services coordinate to uncover the complete scope of the potential harm and crimes committed.

More victims: Speech pathologist at Kan. school accused of child sex crimes

SALINA, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has arrested Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, related to his role in a Feb. 4 standoff and officer-involved shooting in Salina.

KBI agents arrested Johnson-Ponce following his release from Salina Regional Health Center. Agents then transported Johnson-Ponce to the Saline County Jail where he was booked on a warrant for three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, aggravated endangering a child, domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal trespass.

At around 11:20 a.m. February 4, police received a call from a woman who reported an armed domestic disturbance at her home, in the 900 block of Birch Drive in Salina.

Preliminary information indicates that when officers arrived, they contacted a female subject outside the house and learned that a male subject, later identified as Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, had barricaded inside the home with a three-year old child. He was making threats to the child and officers.

Around 12 p.m., SPD’s SWAT team also responded to the scene. KBI’s High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT) was requested to assist around 12:15 p.m.

During the standoff, Johnson-Ponce refused to comply with repeated commands to come out of the house. He would also not allow the toddler to leave. Around 1 p.m. an officer from SPD fired rounds striking Johnson-Ponce. Immediately following the shooting, law enforcement officers safely rescued the child from the home.

Officers rendered aid to Johnson-Ponce. EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Johnson-Ponce was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

Agents then transported Johnson-Ponce to the Saline County Jail where he was booked on a warrant for three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, aggravated endangering a child, domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal trespass.At around 11:20 a.m. February 4, police received a call from a woman who reported an armed domestic disturbance at her home, in the 900 block of Birch Drive in Salina.Preliminary information indicates that when officers arrived, they contacted a female subject outside the house and learned that a male subject, later identified as Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, had barricaded inside the home with a three-year old child. He was making threats to the child and officers.Around 12 p.m., SPD’s SWAT team also responded to the scene. KBI’s High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT) was requested to assist around 12:15 p.m.During the standoff, Johnson-Ponce refused to comply with repeated commands to come out of the house. He would also not allow the toddler to leave. Around 1 p.m. an officer from SPD fired rounds striking Johnson-Ponce. Immediately following the shooting, law enforcement officers safely rescued the child from the home.Officers rendered aid to Johnson-Ponce. EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Johnson-Ponce was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. Canned tuna sold at stores in Missouri, Kansas recalled for botulism risk

As part of the project, Missouri has been doing research on ways to help farmers combat diseases that can decimate soybean crops

A major soybean research project, which collaborates with the University of Missouri, will shut down April 15 due to President Donald Trump’s dismantling of funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The Soybean Innovation Lab, based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, formed in 2011 to provide researchers and organizations with the resources needed to advance soybean development. The lab is comprised of over 100 technical soybean experts from 24 countries, each representing a variety of institutions.

The land grant system will lose 19 innovation labs across 17 states, including Missouri.

MU has been involved in the Soybean Innovation Lab since 2013, said Kerry Clark, an MU researcher who leads the mechanization division for the lab. Clark said MU’s sector of the Soybean Innovation Lab research received $1.2 million, or about $150,000 annually, before losing funding.

As part of the project, Missouri has been doing research on African soybean diseases that would help Missouri farmers combat a disease that can decimate soybean crops. The research found diseases in African soybean crops that could be prevented in Missouri and abroad, Clark said.

“(The cease in funding and the end of the project) puts us many years behind now in trying to combat soybean rust, which is a disease that can take out soybean crops entirely,” Clark said.

In Missouri, soybeans cover more than 5 million acres of the state every year. Soybeans are the No. 1 crop in Missouri, leading in both acreage and value, according to the Missouri Soybean Center. The economic health of Missouri depends on the growth of soybeans because the yearly on-farm value of soybeans is greater than $2.5 billion.

“Soybeans are such an important crop for the state of Missouri,” said Brady Deaton, a former MU chancellor and member of the Soybean Innovation Lab advisory board. “ … So new knowledge, which is being generated by this innovation lab, flows to all producers and consumers of soybeans, and in that sense, has some direct effect.”

Deaton said the end of the project will affect knowledge about soybean breeding, soybean diseases and the uses of technology in Africa and other parts of the world.

Missouri’s research pioneered new technologies, particularly threshing, which is the process of removing the soybeans from their pods . The research also focused on the uses of soybeans and nutrition, and understanding how it was being used for feeding both people and livestock, Deaton said.

The funding disruption also cuts off relationships between the research, business and government sector, said a social media statement from Peter Goldsmith, the director of the Soybean Innovation Lab. He said the labs will lose relationships and collaboration with local businesses, organizations and government.

“U.S. soybean farmers lose one of their best tools to expand their markets and U.S. standards globally,” Goldsmith said in his post. “Local economies in emerging markets lose soybean as an incomparable engine growing wealth, prosperity, and economic development.”

The story goes deeper than just Missouri soybeans. Since his inauguration Jan. 20, Trump has attempted to gut funding and staff from the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, according to The Associated Press. These cuts directly affected the Soybean Innovation Lab. The USAID distributes federal humanitarian aid to other countries.

Deaton said the soybean research fit into the goals of the USAID because it addressed high priority issues, including human and economic development around the world.

“The sudden cessation or cutting of the funds is just very damaging we will find,” Deaton said. “I think, to the efforts of the United States and its foreign policy to bring about positive, meaningful change in those parts of the world where it’s working, and it works in very targeted ways, in some of the poorest countries.”

Upon arrival officers located a man in the parking lot of a nearby convenience store. He suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS was ordered to the scene and the victim was subsequently pronounced deceased. This is also being investigated as a homicide.&nbsp; Police released no additional details late Monday and have not reported an arrest or possible suspect information.

On Monday night police reported the arrest of 23-year-old Desmond A. Lindsey, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols. He is being held on requested charges that include murder in the second degree, criminal discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault.

This was the city’s 2nd homicide in two days last week.

Kansas man accused in weekend killing

KANSAS CITY —The Clay County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and advocacy organizations, led a counter-human trafficking operation Jan. 23 and 24 that resulted in the arrest of men who sought to have sex with a child, as well as services provided to more than a dozen potential trafficking victims.

Last week, prosecutors charged another Kansas man for trying to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex after deputies arrested him in a sting operation. Leavenworth, Kan., resident Samuel J. Weisse, 34, has been charged with one count of felony attempted child enticement. Weisse was messaging with under-cover detectives during the original counter-human trafficking operation. He continued communication until&nbsp; Feb. 5, when he made arrangements to meet whom he believed to be the 13-year-old. Instead, deputies took him into custody at the meet-up location. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.

At the same time as the predator operation, investigators conducted a victim advocacy operation at a Clay County hotel. They had posted an online ad purportedly soliciting sex, knowing that many sex workers are victims of human trafficking. Twenty-seven sex workers responded to the hotel, and 13 agreed to accept services to leave a life of sex trafficking and/or sex work. Google officially changes maps from Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just after 9:30a.m. Monday, patrol officers were dispatched to the 3200 block of East 29th Street in Kansas City on a reported disturbance involving an individual armed with a weapon, according to KCPD&nbsp;Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

 When officers arrived the subject in question had fled the scene.&nbsp; As officers were investigating several other calls for service were received in the area reporting the same individual involved.&nbsp; Additional officers responded to the scene to canvass the area.

At about 10a.m., at 27th and Askew, officers located a man suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS responded to the scene and declared the individual deceased, according to DiMartino.

Preliminary investigation revealed it was the same person involved in the previous incidents. This is being investigated as a homicide. A subject of interest was taken into custody pending further investigation. Police, at this time, are not looking for any additional suspects. Investigators are working to determine what led up to shots being fired. Crime scene technicians are gathering all available physical evidence and any possible surveillance footage.

KCPD: Disturbance led to man's shooting death

To protect yourself, police suggest: avoid using outdoor USPS mailboxes, especially after pickup hours.

&nbsp;Use the mail slot inside the post office for safer drop-offs. Use a gel pen when writing checks which makes them more difficult to "wash".&nbsp;Don't use window envelopes which can show that a check is inside and&nbsp;Consider electronic payments like online banking or apps for added security.

Police in Kansas warn of mail theft scam

SALINE COUNTY —Police are investigating a suspect for alleged criminal threat in Salina.

Just after 11a.m. February 7, police were dispatched to Kansas Wesleyan University, 100 E. Claflin in Salina, following reports of a man making students feel uncomfortable, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.

School officials identified the individual as Jonathan Deacon, 35, of Salina.&nbsp; "Campus security escorted him off school property. While doing so, Deacon allegedly made comments about the security of the school," Feldman said.&nbsp;

A 22-year-old student later reported that Deacon had yelled at him not to attend a dance on campus that evening and stated that he would be back. The student's concerns prompted further investigation.

While officers investigated the Kansas Wesleyan incident, officers were called to the VFW, 1108 W. Crawford in Salina, regarding a man acting strangely at the business. Officers arrived and identified the man as Deacon, who confirmed he had been at Kansas Wesleyan earlier. Police&nbsp; took him into custody on requested charges of criminal threat. He is not a student at the university.&nbsp;

KWU Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Brad Salois said the incident was related to an “outside event on campus.”

Salois did not offer additional comments. Salina Post obtained the KWU email, signed by Salois, from an event volunteer.

WASHINGTON — The largely partisan clash over whether to abolish the<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/demonstrators-us-capitol-rally-against-trumps-direct-attack-education" target="_blank">&nbsp;U.S. Department of Education</a>&nbsp;came to the forefront at a Wednesday hearing by a U.S. House education panel, as rumors continue to circulate over President Donald Trump’s plans to dismantle the federal agency that’s just four-and-a-half decades old.

Trump campaigned heavily on a pledge to get rid of the department, which, among many responsibilities, administers funding for key programs, including for low-income school districts and special education, and also administers federal student aid.

Trump is reported&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2025/02/03/trump-education-department-dismantling-executive-order-draft/?utm_campaign=wp_the7&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F40e0f46%2F67a1feefb7704a156351bc82%2F64c1c5704dae0764a1593f12%2F32%2F103%2F67a1feefb7704a156351bc82" target="_blank">possibly issue some sort of executive order</a>&nbsp;that seeks to diminish the department internally and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-education-department-executive-order-8519eaa465385cc13f4ddcae90228dd3" target="_blank">calls on Congress to abolish the agency</a>. Lawmakers clashed at a House Committee on Education and Workforce hearing focused on “the state of American education,” particularly school choice, parental rights in education and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

The president’s sweeping plan outlined throughout his campaign to “save American education” has already burst out of the floodgates since he took office last month.

He issued a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-orders-education-department-guide-states-use-federal-funds-school-choice" target="_blank">series of education-related executive orders</a>&nbsp;last week focused on prioritizing school choice funding, ending what the administration sees as “radical indoctrination in K-12 schooling” and taking “additional measures to combat anti-semitism.”

Trump also&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/trump-puts-dei-staff-paid-leave-guts-environmental-justice-offices-across-government" target="_blank">signed executive orders</a>&nbsp;in January that gut DEI programs and activities across the federal government.

Rep. Tim Walberg, chair of the House education panel, said he is “pleased to see that the Trump administration is taking excellent steps to restore common sense, personal responsibility and parental choice through our education system.”

“In K-12 education, there’s much work that needs to be done,” the Michigan Republican said, pointing to the latest data from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/" target="_blank">National Assessment of Educational Progress</a>.

The report found that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/reports/mathematics/2024/g4_8/supporting-files/summary-of-results.pdf" target="_blank">average math and reading scores in 2024</a>&nbsp;for pupils in fourth grade and eighth grade were lower compared to before the coronavirus pandemic, in 2019.

Nicole Neily, president and founder of Parents Defending Education, a parents’ rights group, said “American education is in crisis.”

“For far too long, U.S. schools have focused on everything but educating children, and as last week’s NAEP scores have shown, our children are bearing the brunt of these bad decisions,” she said.

Meanwhile, Democrats on the panel warned over the repercussions of dismantling the Education Department.

“The irony is not lost on me that we’re here to discuss the state of American education while the current administration is actively discussing how to dismantle the main federal agency responsible for ensuring safe, quality education for all students,” said Rep. Bobby Scott, ranking member of the panel.

“We will fight any attempt to dismantle the department, and so, we don’t know what the plan will be, but count on our opposition to any plan that will abolish the Department of Education and the programs in it,” the Virginia Democrat added.

Connecticut Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes noted that since being created in 1979, the Education Department “has been committed to ensuring high-quality education for children across the country.”

“As (Chairman Walberg) noted, there are about 1 million children who participate in private school choice programs, but 49.6 million children participate in public school education — what about them? Who is advocating for them?” Hayes said.

Janai Nelson, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, said Trump’s executive orders to “restrict teaching and learning in inclusive and supportive environments and his threats to dismantle the Department of Education and upend critical enforcement of federal civil rights laws will demolish the very foundation of good citizenship.”

“We must reject these proposals out of the Project 2025 playbook and approach public education with common sense and common purpose, not separatism and self-dealing,” Nelson said.

U.S. House members battle over eliminating Dept. of Education 

On Monday, Judge Christopher Magana followed the plea agreement and sentenced Gage Kaiser, 20, Mulvane, to 43 months in prison and ordered him to pay $2,962 in restitution, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

In December, Kaiser pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under influence, according to the&nbsp;the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man convicted in connection with a fatal crash in March that killed a police officer on his way home from work has will learn his fate Monday afternoon.

In December, 20-year-old Gage Kaiser pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under influence, according to the&nbsp;the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.&nbsp;

The accident occurred just before 3:30a.m. March 16, 2024, when a passenger vehicle driven by 26-year-old Scott Hollingsworth was southbound on U.S. 81 at 119th Street, according to Sumner County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Friday. A westbound pickup struck the vehicle driven by Hollingsworth.&nbsp;

Hollingsworth was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; EMS transported three passengers in the pickup to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The pickup driver, later identified as Kaiser, was not injured.

Clearwater PD said Hollingsworth had served the department for a year. On Sept. 10, Geary County deputies arrested Kaiser.

Hollingsworth's survivors included his wife, Hadley, daughter, Claire, parents, Greg and Nataly, and siblings, Jordan and Sydney.&nbsp;

 </figure>The accident occurred just before 3:30a.m. March 16, 2024, when a passenger vehicle driven by 26-year-old Scott Hollingsworth was southbound on U.S. 81 at 119th Street, according to Sumner County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Friday. A westbound pickup struck the vehicle driven by Hollingsworth.&nbsp;Hollingsworth was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; EMS transported three passengers in the pickup to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The pickup driver, later identified as Kaiser, was not injured.Clearwater PD said Hollingsworth had served the department for a year. On Sept. 10, Geary County deputies arrested Kaiser.Hollingsworth's survivors included his wife, Hadley, daughter, Claire, parents, Greg and Nataly, and siblings, Jordan and Sydney.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —A former Kansas State University basketball standout is out of jail after a weekend arrest in Manhattan.

Just after 5a.m. Sunday, police arrested 36-year-old Michael Beasley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the Manhattan Regional Airport for marijuana possession, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report. Beasley posted the $750.00 bond and is no longer in custody.

Beasley returned to Manhattan for Saturday's Sunflower Showdown.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a Saturday homicide in Topeka have identified the victim as 29-year-old Chavis Collins, according to Topeka Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

Just after 1:00 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a local hospital in reference to a victim, later identified as Collins, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. A short time later, Collins dies of his injuries.&nbsp; Police released no additional details.

This is the city’s 2nd homicide in two days.&nbsp; On Friday, police responded to a fatal shooting in the 2700 Block of SW Burnett Road.&nbsp;
