Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Monday afternoon that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is undergoing concussion protocol and the team is awaiting results.

Other than that, there’s no real news, and Reid would not speculate on when Mahomes could be back.

"Patrick is in protocol, so we'll just follow that and see how he does in the next couple of days."

Reid said after Sunday's game that Mahomes was "feeling good," but didn't elaborate much beyond that.

There are five phases Mahomes must pass this week before he is cleared to play.

If after meeting four thresholds, and if he is deemed cleared to play by an Independent Neurological Consultant, only then will Mahomes be in uniform for the AFC Championship game.

Before being taken out, Mahomes completed 21-of-30 passes for 255 yards and a score.

Back-up quarterback and 13-year veteran Chad Henne came in and made some huge throws, completing 6-of-8 passes for 66 yards in a <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/ffe3cc89-e0ea-406e-8f66-e6b9aa7240b8">22-17 win over the Cleveland Browns</a> in the AFC Divisional Playoffs Sunday.

Henne says getting to start<a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/b43f8416-cffe-47bb-8258-f5edb466c735"> against the Chargers in Week 17</a> helped him prepare for such a moment.

"I felt a lot more comfortable out there," Henne said, "after playing the last game of the season against the Chargers. Had a full week of preparation. I felt confident. There's a lot of playmakers out there, and it was a great opportunity for me to get out there and see some guys make some plays."

The Chiefs (15-2) host the Buffalo Bills (15-3) in the AFC Championship on Sunday at 5:40 p.m.

Northwest Missouri State's Trevor Hudgins named MIAA co-athlete of the week in men's basketball

KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Chiefs are headed back to the AFC Championship.

The Chiefs (15-2) held on to beat the Cleveland Browns, 22-17, on Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium in an AFC Divisional playoff game.

Kansas City had to lean on backup quarterback Chad Henne after Patrick Mahomes left the game late in the third quarter and underwent concussion protocol.

"(Mahomes) got hit in the back of the head," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after. "He's doing great right now, which is a real positive. We'll see where it goes from here. Right now, he's feeling good."

Henne, who started the Week 17 game against the Chargers and saw his first ever playoff action Sunday, completed 6-of-8 passes for 66 yards and an interception, though the Browns couldn't capitalize on the turnover.

"I'm proud of Chad and the way he handled everything," Reid said. "That late interception, that was on me."

Henne said he had the chance to talk with Mahomes briefly after the game.

"He's in good spirits," Henne said of the starting QB. "Obviously, we'll see (Monday) with all of the testing and everything, but right now, he's in good spirits."

The Chiefs' defense forced a Browns punt with less than five minutes to go. Faced with a 4th down and 1 play inside of two minutes left, Henne completed a swing pass to Tyreek Hill, who got more than enough yards to give the Chiefs a first down. The Browns had no timeouts left to stop the clock.

"There was no doubt," Reid said of the decision to call that play on 4th and short. "I think everyone on our side knew we were going to go for that play. On our sideline, everyone was like, 'let's go. Let's roll.'"

Mahomes ended his day completing 21-of-30 passes for 255 yards and a score. Hill caught eight passes for 110 yards. Tight end Travis Kelce had a big day as well, hauling in eight passes for 109 yards and a score.

The Chiefs will now host the No. 2 seed Buffalo Bills (15-3) in the AFC Championship on Sunday, January 24 at 5:40 p.m., becoming the first franchise in NFL history to host three straight AFC title games.

Waters tallied a career-high 20 points in the win. Northwest shot 27-of-48 from the field (56.3%), marking the sixth time this
season the Bearcats have shot 50% or better.&nbsp; 
Northwest never trailed in the contest. The Bearcats opened up a 10-2 lead less
than four minutes in and never looked back.&nbsp;

The Bearcat women lost to No. 5 and unbeaten UNK Saturday, 59-35.

Northwest will be in action again Tuesday at home against Emporia State. This will be a women's only contest. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

No. 3 Northwest Missouri State men's basketball victorious at Kearney Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Missouri Western Track &amp; Field
 teams began their 2021 indoor seasons on Saturday at the MIAA Rust Buster
 at Washburn University. 
 
 The Griffon women finished second as a team with 94 points. Central
 Missouri won the women's title as there were six MIAA schools at the meet.
 The Missouri Western men were fourth overall out of the five MIAA teams as
 they finished with 52 points. UCM also won the men's team title.

 Adams won individual titles for the MWSU women. Kollore
 capture the 200 meter gold with a time of 26.48, while Adams won the 600
 meter with a time of 1:27.93.

 title.

STANBERRY - A tournament championship between No. 3 Mound City and an 11-3 North Andrew team was as appealing as advertised early on.

Both teams hitting big shots, punching and counter-punching and a tight score at half.

Then Mound City, led by senior Gage Salsbury, flipped a switch and it was all but over.

With Tony Osburn being double-guarded at all costs, the Panthers' took it upon themselves to look for (and make) big shots from all other areas.

"It took us awhile to get going," Salsbury said. "We have guys that can score in high volumes besides Tony. We just had to get the other guys going."

Salsbury buried four three-pointers in the second half and five on the afternoon.

 Coupled with some high-flying dunks from Landon Poppa and Tony Osburn, the Panthers (12-0) pulled away in a 71-49 win over North Andrew (11-4) on Saturday afternoon in the Stanberry Invitational Championship.

"They were trying to double Tony and we got the ball to some shooters and Gage hit threes," head coach Ryan Osburn said. "Gage had to be the guy to step up and I said 'you guys are going to be wide open, so knock 'em down.' And he did. Gage is a tough matchup, especially when Landon and Tony get to the basket and kick the ball out."

Wil Young, Keaton Zembles and Connor Derr all made three-pointers in the first half. Those were timely, as Tony was held to just four points in the first 16 minutes.

By the second half, Tony found his stroke, scoring 11 in the final two quarters, including a pair of threes and a dunk. In all, eight Panthers found the scoring column Saturday.

"If we're going to be as good as I think we can be, those other guys have to shoot the ball when they're open and take advantage of the defense trying to shut down our other players," Coach Osburn said.

Mound City outscored North Andrew 27-10 in the third quarter, but the Cardinals didn't go down quietly. Senior Tanner McDaniel, who's been a scoring machine all season, still managed a game-high 29 points, including four made threes. Junior Owen Graham scored 12.

"Tanner is obviously a really good scorer," Salsbury said. "We have Landon (Poppa), who's also pretty athletic and big, so he can guard Owen (Graham) pretty well. I thought we played really well any time we guarded Tanner.

These teams know each other's strengths and weaknesses quite well. North Andrew and Mound City scrimmaged against each other 20 or so times this summer. There could be more high-stakes battles between these two quite soon, but the respect between both coaches and programs remains strong.

"I consider Wade (Bryson) a close coaching friend," Osburn said. "We send each other texts all the time and lean on each other for advice. I cheer for them when they're not playing us. We've played them in the summer several years in a row. Always two good teams playing as hard as we can. A great rivalry, I think."

Salsbury buries threes, Mound City pulls away from North Andrew in Stanberry title game

STANBERRY - Platte Valley got off to a pretty decent start in Saturday's Stanberry Invitational Championship, getting baskets from their usual suspects.

Seniors Page West and Malia Collins each had buckets, but freshman Maggie Collins and sophomore Sarah Langford were sinking shots, too.

Pretty soon, Malia and junior Jaclyn Pappert had three fouls each in the first half, so coach Tyler Pedersen needed more buckets from his youngsters.

Platte Valley (13-0) got 13 points from Langford, six from Maggie Collins and a couple threes from Stephanie Turpin in a 50-39 win over Stanberry (9-3) in the tournament championship Saturday afternoon.

Langford admits she was a bit nervous when she went in so early, but any stage fright she had went away quickly.

"I just buckled down on defense and did what I had to do to help the team out," she said.

Besides a three-point win over Maryville on Dec. 11, Stanberry was the only other team to have played Platte Valley within a margin tighter than 26 points.

"It's always good," Coach Pedersen said on getting to play his starters for the majority of the game. "You can always learn a lot where you play in a game where every possession matters. This was one of those games. Stanberry is a great defensive team. They're very, very scrappy and they're going to play hard. They were going to make us earn it and we knew that coming in."

Like everyone else on the Platte Valley side, Pedersen was thrilled to see Langford, a non-starter, step up big when it counted most.

"That was awesome to see," Pedersen said of her performance. "Hopefully, she can build some confidence, because on the defensive side, she's really good and she can change a game. Usually when she comes in, she'll get a quick steal. She can do so many things defensively. But, we 've been trying to get her to do more on the offensive side. She did that today, and it was huge for us."

Langford certainly helped swing momentum early. Stanberry started off with an early lead, but Langford scored four points in the first quarter and five more in the second. Plus, Turpin hit both of her threes in the second quarter as well.

"I've been working a lot harder on my offense," Langford said, "because defense is definitely my strength.

Coupled with Platte Valley's press defense that forced 25 Stanberry turnovers, that offensive effort was enough for Platte Valley to take a 35-22 halftime lead and maintain a double-digit advantage for nearly the entirety of the second half.

"Stanberry had a nice attack, but we made adjustments and forced some turnovers," Pedersen said. "Even though, we had some turnovers of our own in the second half."

Platte Valley's offense slowed a bit in the second half, scoring only 15 points over the final 16 minutes. But, Langford and Pappert each had three-pointers during that stretch to help keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Platte Valley is at Mid-Buchanan Tuesday and East Atchison before taking part in the North Platte tournament on Jan. 25-30.

A No. 2 ranking in Class 1 and an unbeaten record in mid-January certainly garners a lot of attention, but Platte Valley hopes to just build off of a tournament title and keep their impressive run going for the rest of the season.

"January is a grind for us," Pedersen said. "A couple of tournaments and some big conference games in between there. I tell the girls all the time, we want to do the things we do and do them at a high level so we can grab some momentum."

They were going to make us earn it and we knew that coming in."Like everyone else on the Platte Valley side, Pedersen was thrilled to see Langford, a non-starter, step up big when it counted most."That was awesome to see," Pedersen said of her performance. "Hopefully, she can build some confidence, because on the defensive side, she's really good and she can change a game. Usually when she comes in, she'll get a quick steal. She can do so many things defensively. But, we 've been trying to get her to do more on the offensive side. She did that today, and it was huge for us."Langford certainly helped swing momentum early. Stanberry started off with an early lead, but Langford scored four points in the first quarter and five more in the second. Plus, Turpin hit both of her threes in the second quarter as well."I've been working a lot harder on my offense," Langford said, "because defense is definitely my strength.Coupled with Platte Valley's press defense that forced 25 Stanberry turnovers, that offensive effort was enough for Platte Valley to take a 35-22 halftime lead and maintain a double-digit advantage for nearly the entirety of the second half."Stanberry had a nice attack, but we made adjustments and forced some turnovers," Pedersen said. "Even though, we had some turnovers of our own in the second half."Platte Valley's offense slowed a bit in the second half, scoring only 15 points over the final 16 minutes. But, Langford and Pappert each had three-pointers during that stretch to help keep the Bulldogs at bay.Platte Valley is at Mid-Buchanan Tuesday and East Atchison before taking part in the North Platte tournament on Jan. 25-30.A No. 2 ranking in Class 1 and an unbeaten record in mid-January certainly garners a lot of attention, but Platte Valley hopes to just build off of a tournament title and keep their impressive run going for the rest of the season."January is a grind for us," Pedersen said. "A couple of tournaments and some big conference games in between there. I tell the girls all the time, we want to do the things we do and do them at a high level so we can grab some momentum."<figure>

Platte Valley leans on younger stars, outlasts Bulldogs in Stanberry Invite Championship

The Missouri Western women's basketball game at Fort Hays State Saturday has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 result within the Griffons' program Missouri Western returned to St. Joseph for further testing. No determination has been made on the games this coming week.

The Griffons are scheduled to play host to Newman on Thursday, January 21 and then Central Oklahoma on Saturday, January 23. MWSU is working with Fort Hays State to reschedule the game and a make-up date will be announced when confirmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This comes one day after the Missouri Western men's basketball team <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/f5d27291-4c1e-4608-b120-687a049b54d7">paused team activities</a> due to COVID-19 protocol.

Missouri Western women's basketball Saturday game postponed, activities paused

The 2021 international signing period for the MLB began Friday, and according to MLB.com, the Kansas City Royals have signed one of the top shortstops available in Daniel Vazquez.

He’s been signed to a $1.5 million bonus out of the $5.9 million the Royals can spend on international signings this period.

There’s also reports that the Royals are likely to sign Dominican shortstop Yosmi Fernandez for $800,000, calling him a “switch-hitter with a swing geared for line drives...thatwill need to get stronger to be able to do more damage.”

The Royals will also reportedly sign catcher Osman Bravo, shortstop Diego Guzman, outfielders Sebastian Ramirez and Junior Marin from Venezuela, catcher Steven Cespedes, shortstop Yeison Vargas and outfielder Angel Parra from the Dominican Republic. None of these signings have yet been confirmed by the Royals organization.

The Royals have confirmed, however, that they’ve come to terms with shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and pitcher Brad Keller - their last remaining unsigned arbitration-eligible players.

Friday was the deadline to agree on terms with arbitration-eligible players before exchanging figures.

According to Alec Lewis, the Royals signed Mondesi to a one-year, $2.53 million contract, and Keller to a one-year, $3.35 million contract.

MLB Trade Rumors estimate Mondesi would get either a $2.1 million or $3.8 million deal through arbitration, depending on how the shortened season was weighed. They also estimated Keller would get $2.4 million or $4.3 million.

Mondesi had an up-and-down season in 2020, hitting .256 (batting average)/.294 (OBP)/.416 (slug), leading the league with 24 steals in 59 games. In parts of five seasons, Mondesi has hit .251/.284/.415, and has yet to play more than 102 games in a year.

The 25-year old Keller is coming off a career-best ERA of 2.47 in 2020, but he only threw 54 2⁄3 innings. He made just nine starts after missing the beginning of the season due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Keller has a 3.50 ERA in 360 1⁄3 innings over three seasons with the Royals. Despite coming to terms, Keller and the Royals could still work out a contract extension which could run around $70 million, per reports.

Royals sign Daniel Vazquez, come to terms with Brad Keller, Adalberto Mondessi

The Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs have rarely met.

They’ve never met in the playoffs, despite their long and storied histories.

They’re certainly familiar with each other, as they get set to face off in an AFC divisional-round showdown at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Browns’ coach Kevin Stefanski was once a summer intern for Chiefs counterpart Andy Reid.

The Browns' Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) and the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech) were Big XII Conference rivals.

Mayfield’s Sooners got the better of Mahomes’ Red Raiders twice - 63-27 in 2015 and then in an epic 66-59 shootout in 2016.

Mahomes won the first NFL battle between the two in 2018 - a 37-21 triumph for the Chiefs in Cleveland.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” Mahomes said of Mayfield. “Since I was a senior in high school. To be able to play on this stage is going to be special. He got the better of me in college, so I’ll try my best to win in the NFL.”

Another commonality is John Dorsey, who’s had his thumbprint on both rosters after stints as general manager for both teams.

Dorsey joined Reid in overhauling a Chiefs franchise in 2013 that was 2-14 the season prior. It was also Dorsey who, after being let go by the Chiefs, helped turn around a Browns organization that was 0-16 in 2017.

There’s also Kareem Hunt, who spent two seasons in Kansas City, including a Pro Bowl year in 2017, and got signed by Cleveland after being released by Kansas City in 2018, following the release of a video showing Hunt’s involvement in kicking a woman in a hotel in February of that same year.

It was a rocky ending, but Reid holds no grudges.

“We love Kareem,” Reid said. “He’s a heck of a kid. I’m so happy for him that he’s doing well. Really, when all is said and done, that’s the most important thing.”

What’s the key difference between the two teams? The upstart Browns are aiming for back-to-back playoff wins for the first time since 1950, after winning their first playoff game in 26 years last Sunday. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are aiming for back-to-back Super Bowl triumphs.

“They’re a heck of a football team,” Reid said of his next opponent. “You get to this time of the year, and you’re playing against the best. We’ve had a chance to look at them on tape, and respect the heck out of them and the job that they’ve done.”

The Chiefs (14-2) have been idle for two weeks after locking up the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and earning a first-round bye. The week of rest has helped, but Kansas City may still be down a few key playmakers.

Receiver Sammy Watkins (calf) and linebacker Willie Gay (ankle) have been ruled out, while running back Clyde-Edwards-Helaire (ankle) is questionable.

One key player who’s feeling well is receiver Tyreek Hill. After battling a hamstring injury in the latter half of the season, Hill says he feels “great and excited,” but he knows the Browns are not a team to take lightly.

“Very good and very young team,” Hill said. “Offense is tremendous, defense is good. We cannot take this opponent lightly. We have to play this game just like any other. Come out, play hard and just be the Chiefs.”

One player with mixed emotions heading into Sunday is tight end Travis Kelce. The Cleveland native has certainly been hearing a lot from friends and family back home these last few days.

“I absolutely love Cleveland,” the record-setting tight end remarked. “I understand we are each other’s enemies right now. I have a lot of friends and family back in Cleveland telling me I’m the enemy. It’s going to be fun going up against the Browns. It’s going to be an exciting game.”

Sunday’s showdown with the Browns kicks off Sunday at 2:05 central. It’ll be carried on KFEQ (680 AM, 95.3 FM) and Q Country 92.7 FM in St. Joseph.

The winner earns a spot in the AFC Championship game on January 24.

Missouri Western men's basketball activities paused due to COVID protocol

The No. 16 Missouri Western men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night as they lost at Nebraska-Kearney, 75-67.

The Griffons fall to 8-2 on the season, playing their first game since their win over then No. 5. Washburn last Saturday. MWSU led at halftime, 25-24, but the Lopers then made three consecutive three-point field goals to start the second half to regain the lead and they never trailed again. UNK outscored Western 27-10 in the first nine minutes of the second half and led 51-35. The Griffons used a 13-3 run to pull within three points, 60-57, with just under five minutes left and only trailed 65-63 with 2:22 left.

However, Nebraska-Kearney made 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to seal the upset. Missouri Western shot just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc and 41.3% (26-63) from the field. UNK also outrebounded the Griffons 43-36. Tyrell Carroll&nbsp;led the Griffs with 19 points, seven rebounds five steals and three assists.&nbsp;Q Mays&nbsp;added 15 points and&nbsp;Caleb Bennett&nbsp;scored 12.&nbsp;

Missouri Western is at Fort Hays State Saturday. The women play at 2 and the men at 4. The Griffon women (2-7) lost their sixth straight, falling to No. 5 UNK Thursday, 59-34.

The third-ranked Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team closed their game on a 15-2 run to post a 64-51 win over Fort Hays State at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays Thursday. Junior Trevor&nbsp;Hudgins&nbsp;carried the&nbsp; load with a game-high 29 points, marking the 42nd time in his career that he has surpassed 20 points in a game.

Hudgins&nbsp;sank 10-of-17 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from three.&nbsp;Hudgins&nbsp;added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Thursday marks the 11th straight road victory for the Bearcats, who moved to 7-1 on the season. Fort Hays State falls to 3-7. Northwest will next travel to Kearney to take on the Nebraska-Kearney&nbsp;Lopers. Tip is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, following the women's contest.

The Bearcat women fell to the Tigers, 71-49, on Thursday.

STANBERRY - North Andrew came out and set the tone right away.

A 10-0 lead in the first three minutes, prompting a quick timeout from Platte Valley's Tim Jermain.

Platte Valley then responded with an 11-0 run of their own and took an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

That's about the only lead Platte Valley would enjoy.

The Cardinals (11-3) scored 23 points in the second quarter and had three players finish in double figures in route to a 64-34 win in a Stanberry Invitational semifinal on Thursday night.

"I give Platte Valley a lot of credit," North Andrew head coach Wade Bryson said. "After we started out 10-0, it would have been real easy for them to put their head down and let the game get out of control. They really fought back and took it to us and caught us off guard, but I'm really proud of our guys on how they responded."

At the end of the first, Bryson told his boys to "settle in and relax."

The Cardinals did just that. Senior Tanner McDaniel scored 10 points in the second quarter, including a pair of made threes, to help the Cardinals go ahead 33-21 at halftime.

McDaniel ended up with a team-high 19 points. Fellow senior Clayton Linville had 12, while junior Owen Graham contributed 10.

"It felt like our scoring was a little bit more balanced," Bryson said. "(Platte Valley) did a good job of defending (McDaniel), but he did a good job of playing under control and finding the open guy and doing what he needed to do to get everyone else involved."

The Cardinals now have a huge challenge ahead in Saturday's championship - No. 1 seed Mound City (11-0), who <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/d7783d90-a980-4f1d-aa52-23b05d9601be">thumped Stanberry on Thursday.</a>

North Andrew played Mound City at the Stanberry Invite&nbsp; in the semifinal round last season, and lost 79-69. But, the two teams have seen each more plenty more times since then.

"(Mound city coach Ryan Osburn) and I are good friends," Bryson said. "When everything was locked down, I gave him a call and we scrimmaged against each other 20 some quarters. It's a team we're very familiar with. We're ready. We're excited, and hopefully we get school canceled (Friday) so I have 24 hours to figure out how to stop them."

Saturday's championship game is set for 2 p.m.

North Andrew overcomes slow start, blows out Platte Valley to reach Stanberry title game

But, everyone has a part to play, and so far, they're all playing them quite well.The Bulldogs (9-2), ranked No. 5 in Class 1, used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Albany, 37-23, in a Thursday semifinal at the Stanberry Invitational.The Bulldogs committed 12 fouls and had 10 turnovers, but they did enough to get themselves back into the Stanberry Invitational title game for the third time in four years."We came out and had some breakdowns there throughout the game, but we kind of worked through those and I guess we came back and got the win," Stanberry head coach Karla McQueen said. "We have to work on some things, and that kind of showed tonight, but these girls work hard and I think we'll get the job done."Seven different players scored, led by junior Lexi Craig and senior Riley McQueen, who each had 10. Senior Morgan Wallace scored seven."There's a lot of good team leadership," McQueen said. "They know they have to work hard to get better. They come to practice and work hard every day. That's kind of the thing here at Stanberry, and they're kind of carrying on that tradition."Stanberry started off strong with a 7-2 lead, but Albany ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to game a slim lead.The Bulldogs trailed 14-7, but stormed back to take a 20-14 lead at halftime, and would never lose their advantage again.Defensively, Stanberry forced 19 turnovers and held the Warriors (6-3) to just nine second half points.Up next for Stanberry is No. 1 seed Platte Valley (12-0), who took down King City, 60-33, in the first semifinal Thursday afternoon."We have to take care of ourselves," McQueen said, "and work on the things we need to do to get better."Platte Valley and Stanberry face off on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.Stanberry 37 - 7, 13, 9, 8 Albany 23 - 8, 6, 3, 6Stanberry scoring - Lexi Craig - 10, Riley McQueen - 10, Morgan Wallace - 7, Astasia Brown&nbsp; - 2, Sadie Runde - 2, Kiley Mattson - 2, Amelia Wallace - 2Albany scoring - Gabby Newman - 18, Kayce Messner - 4, Sierra Anthony - 1<figure>
