WALDRON, Mo. (AP) — A pilot was hurt when a small plane crashed Saturday in the Kansas City area, authorities say.

The Platte County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened just after noon as the single-engine plane was landing at Noah's Ark Airport in Waldron. The pilot was the only person aboard and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities are investigating what caused the crash. Federal investigators have been called to the scene.

Kansas and Missouri saw another jump in COVID-19 cases and deaths, with several area counties reporting new cases and deaths as well.

Mosaic Life Care reported 57 COVID-19 patients Thursday, which is down seven from the day before. St. Joseph has 54 patients, while Maryville has 2 and Albany 1. Mosaic has tested 59,427 patients - 7,609 of whom have tested positive.

The City of St. Joseph Health Department reported three new COVID-19 related deaths Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths in Buchanan County to 124.

The three new deaths were all females with underlying health conditions - two in their 80’s and one in her 90’s.

The Department also reported 58 new cases of COVID-19 in Buchanan County Wednesday,&nbsp;bringing the county’s total to 7,977. The number hospitalized stands at 58, which is down four since Tuesday.

Andrew County reports 20 new cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday, bringing their total to 1,539. Andrew County's death rate remains steady at 15.

Doniphan County, Kansas reports 670 cases Thursday - an increase of 14. Atchison County, KS reports 1,178 total cases as of Thursday.

Statewide, Missouri reports 376,811 total cases (3,231 new) Thursday, resulting in 5,294 deaths (34 new).

Kansas reports 209,689 total cases (5,089 new) and 2,507 total deaths (59 new) as of Thursday.

The St. Joseph AFL-CIO's Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program saw all 748 families adopted in 2020.

Penny Adams, the executive director of AFL-CIO in St. Joe, says reaching that goal in a challenging year was gratifying.

"It's a great relief to our staff and our board," Adams said. "But, an even bigger relief to the families. They never know when they sign up what the results are going to be. So, for them to know they've been adopted, that makes their Christmas even more special."

The goal of the&nbsp;Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program is&nbsp;to help those who need assistance during the holiday season. The program matches needy families and individuals in the St. Joseph area with families, groups and organizations who are willing to help.

"The adopters have a choice on how much they want to provide and exactly what they want to do," Adams explained. "The adopters go out and shop and will wrap the gifts and deliver them to their adopted family or to the agency."

Adams says in a year where everyone has struggled to some degree, the response to the program in 2020 was better than anyone expected.

"Everybody is struggling this year in various ways," Adams said. "We didn't know what to expect and how people would respond. We've had more adopters choose a family and adopt this year than we have previously. Even though we're in a pandemic, people are still caring about others and wanting to help."

AFL-CIO is still accepting monetary donations to help offset the cost of the program. Donations can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.helpmenow.org">helpmenow.org</a>, by phone at 816-364-1131, via mail, or in-person at the AFL-CIO office in St. Joseph.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Adams expressed many thanks to those who adopted a family in need this holiday season.

All families adopted in AFL-CIO's Adopt-A-Family-Christmas Program

Additional economic relief for small businesses could soon be
on the way if President Trump signs the $900 billion coronavirus relief package
passed by Congress.

The bill provides relief, but also requires some things from
small businesses.

Rebecca Lobina with the Northwest Missouri State University <a href="https://www.nwmissouri.edu/services/sbdc/index.htm">Small
Business Development Center</a> says a measure approved by Congress early in the
pandemic requires all businesses to pay workers who are forced to isolate due
to COVID-19.

“Small businesses are not exempt from this. They are required
to pay sick pay for a COVID-related quarantine,” Lobina tells host Barry Birr
on the KFEQ Hotline.

Lobina says the massive bill does extend the Paycheck
Protection Program, offering businesses forgivable loans if they keep workers
on the payroll. It also offers a grant of up to $10,000 for businesses adversely
impacted by the pandemic. Lobina says Congress has enhanced the SBA Economic
Injury Disaster Loan, clarifying that any company that lost business due to the
pandemic is eligible for the $10,000.

“Every business can receive the $10,000,” Lobina says. “So,
even if you are a sole proprietor, self-employed, one person, before you would
have gotten the $1,000. You can now go back and receive the additional $9,000,
so that in a sense you got the full $10,000.”

Lobina says the grant could help a business survive the
coronavirus pandemic.

“It will make a huge difference for them, especially for those
self-employed individuals who don’t have other employees,” Lobina says.

The relief package is a massive bill. It covers more than
5,000 pages. Lobina says only about 300 pages deals with economic relief for
small businesses.

President Trump has signaled his displeasure with the measure,
saying it doesn’t provide enough relief for average Americans. Trump says the $600
per individual direct payment is too small. He suggests it should be $2,000 apiece.
Trump has not signaled whether he will veto it.

St. Joseph Health Department reports three new deaths Wednesday

A Chillicothe man pleaded guilty in federal court to his role in a $142 million scheme to sell non-organic grain as though it was organic.

57-year-old Steven N. Whiteside&nbsp; entered the guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jill A. Morris on federal information that charges him with falsely signing documents related to the fraud scheme.&nbsp; This is the same scheme that included the late Randy Constant of Chillicothe, the leader of the fraud scheme, John Burton of Clarksdale, Missouri, and three farmers from Nebraska, all of whom who supplied Constant with non-organic grain.

In the guilty plea, Whiteside admitted that he signed a document in May of 2015, falsely claiming that he owned or farmed certain parcels of land when he actually had no affiliation or control of the property.

Whiteside falsely attested in a Land Use History Verification that no chemicals had been used on the property in the preceding three years. The Land Use History Verification is a form used in conjunction with an application to have land certified as organic as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program. 

In order for grain to be certified as organic, the grain must have been grown through approved methods and without the use of certain substances, including synthetic chemicals, and produced and handled in compliance with the program.

At the time Whiteside signed the document, it was co-signed by Constant, who was identified on the document as the applicant seeking the certification for the land. In addition to being the identified applicant, Constant also purchased non-organic grain from Whiteside and employed Whiteside as part of Constant’s fish farm operation.

Chillicothe man pleads guilty in $142 million organic grain scheme

The St. Joseph Symphony's annual Christmas concert will still go on this year, but not in its usual way.

A recording of the Symphony will be broadcast locally on KQ-TV (ABC affiliate) on Christmas Eve from 6-7 p.m. without commercial breaks.

 The recording is a performance at The Missouri Theater from December 2018 called "A Viennese Holiday," featuring 11 pieces performed by 51 musicians.

Lori McAlister, the Symphony's managing director, says she started thinking in late summer and early fall about how to bring the community a holiday concert in a safe way.

"We're very cognizant of keeping the community and our players healthy," McAlister said, "and doing things in the most responsible way that we can while keeping up the music and making sure people know the St. Joseph Symphony is alive and well."

Noel Good, a violinist with the Symphony, says he misses performing live, especially this time of year. But, he hopes that broadcasting a recorded concert will bring some cheer for both the audience and the musicians.

"Playing Christmas concerts is a part of our lives," Good said. "This year is very strange in that I have not played any Christmas music. So, this is important to the musicians, too. Even though we can't participate in person, I think it's a very nice way for us to get into the spirit."

The St. Joseph Symphony is also in the process of hiring a new Music Director/Conductor. McAlister says they're down to three finalists.

"All of them in the region," McAlister said of the candidates. "All of them accomplished and interested in us, which is exciting and humbling."

The Symphony hopes to hold three audition concerts in April and May of 2021. More information on those will be released at a later date.

Christmas is just about here, and the Salvation Army in St. Joseph is asking the community for a little extra help this holiday season.

Donations to The Salvation Army’s 2020 Red Kettle Campaign in St. Joseph are falling short. The Salvation Army so far has reached about 50% of their goal to raise $300,000 this year. Major Ronald Key attributes this shortfall to a number of factors.

"A lot of it has to do with there being less foot traffic," Key said. "A lot of people are buying online. We're also having less volunteers that have rung bells. So with all of that combined, that's where the lag is."

The Salvation Army has Red Kettles at HyVee, Wal-Mart, Price Chopper, Hobby Lobby and Sam's Club in St. Joseph.&nbsp;

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign ends Thursday, but they'll accept donations through January 1, 2021. To make a credit card donation, you can call 816-232-5824. Checks can be mailed to The Salvation Army in St. Joseph, or donations can be made on the <a href="https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/stjoseph/">St. Joseph Salvation Army website</a>.

St. Joseph's Salvation Army Red Kettle Collections Lagging This Year

A St. Joseph resident was shot in the leg and wounded last (TUE)
night during an altercation in a home in the 65-Hundred block of Washington
Street.

St. Joseph police are looking for the shooter.

Police say the shooting occurred in the home shortly after
eight o’clock. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was taken
to Mosaic Life Care for treatment.

A pedestrian crossing Belt Highway near Faraon Street was
struck and injured late last night.

St. Joseph police report the pedestrian sustained moderate
injuries after being hit by a southbound vehicle shortly after 11 o’clock while
standing in the middle of the highway.

struck and injured late last night.St. Joseph police report the pedestrian sustained moderate
injuries after being hit by a southbound vehicle shortly after 11 o’clock while

Pedestrian struck and injured while in middle of Belt Highway

LIVINGSTON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 11:30p.m. Tuesday in Livingston County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Avenger driven by Kenneth M. Grace, Springfield, was northbound on U.S. 65 at Route H five miles north of Tina.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car traveled off the north side of the road, struck a traffic post and overturned.&nbsp;

Livingston County Ambulance transported Grace to Carroll County Memorial Hospital.&nbsp; He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man hospitalized after car strikes traffic post, overturns

It's a day that everyone at Mosaic Life Care had been longing for since March - their first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Roughly 40 frontline workers at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph received the first doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine on Tuesday. Mosaic received 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 1500 of the Moderna vaccine - the amount it requested. Vaccinations will also take place at Mosaic in Maryville and Albany.

Rowell Gutierrez is a registered nurse at Mosaic in St. Joseph. He arrived from the Philippines this past February and started treating COVID patients in March. Some of Gutierrez's patients have passed away due to virus complications, but he's confident that this vaccine will help end this long battle.

"After taking this vaccine, I hope it will help," Gutierrez said, "and also convince other people, not just in St. Joseph, just to know that this might help us put an end to this chaos."

Aryn Fidler is an ICU nurse, and has seen the very worst that COVID has to offer. For her, receiving the vaccine was a major relief.

"I want things to go back to normal," she said empathically. "I don't want to watch any more people die. I see horrible, horrible things happen to wonderful, perfectly healthy people...I'm tired of it."

Mosaic Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Davin Turner, called this a 'joyous time' and wants everyone to know that there is no reason to fear this vaccine.

"I believe this vaccine is safe," Turner said. "That's why I wanted to sit there and show people that it's safe and I'm certainly willing to have the vaccine and be an example for folks. We need to be vaccinated. This is how the country gets back to some sense of normalcy."

Turner said up to 200 workers will receive their vaccine Wednesday, and he believes everyone within the Mosaic system will be vaccinated within 14 days.

Mike Morgan works as a runner at Mosaic in St. Joseph, delivering supplies to various parts of the hospital. He said his shot Tuesday was painless, and he's grateful to all who helped get this vaccine out so quickly.

"This thing has gone full speed," Morgan said. "(The U.S. government) called this (Operation) Warp Speed. This is warp speed. Here we are. Hopefully, this is going to take care of it."

Mosaic Lifecare frontline workers in St. Joseph receive COVID vaccine doses

St. Joseph school officials will scrap the hybrid learning
model adopted in October.

St. Joseph School Superintendent Doug Van Zyl says those
students attending in-class will return to their school building five days a
week beginning in the second semester.

“When we started face-to-face in the fall, due to issues we
went to the hybrid schedule,” Van Zyl tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ
Hotline. “The board chose to stay with the hybrid schedule through the end of
the first semester, which for us is January 13th.”

The St. Joseph School Board voted unanimously Monday night to
go back to in-class learning for those not enrolled in the Virtual Academy.

Elementary students have been meeting in class four days a
week, learning remotely on Wednesdays. Middle and high school students had been
attending in-class only two days a week.

The district went to the hybrid model when too many teachers
either contracted COVID-19 or had been in close enough contact with someone who
tested positive to keep them from returning to the classroom, causing massive
staff shortages throughout the district.

Van Zyl says the student population hasn’t been hit as hard.

“Not that we’re not having cases in school, but a majority of
the cases that we’ve been able to contact trace and follow have actually taken
place outside of school.,” Van Zyl says. “And so, students for the most part
have been pretty flat during this whole time on the number of cases that we’ve
had. So that’s a positive. It’s really the adults that are impacted.”

Van Zyl says adopting the hybrid model received mixed reviews.

“Some people feel, hey, the dumbest thing you ever did was not
keep everybody in for five days and you’ve got some people who feel like the
dumbest thing you ever did was the opposite.”

Van Zyl says students will return to fulltime classroom study
January 14th, the first day of the new semester.

The decision does not affect those students enrolled in the
district’s Virtual Academy.

we have all been waiting for and that is that we received vaccine this morning,”
Turner tells reporters at a news conference in St. Joseph Monday.

Mosaic received 975 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 1,500 doses
of the Moderna vaccine, the amount it requested. Vaccinations will take place
in St. Joseph, Maryville, and Albany.

Turner says frontline workers will be the first to be
vaccinated.

“That means nurses. That means environmental services, those
folks that clean those rooms. That means our cafeteria workers that go up on
the floors and hand out trays. That also means our doctors,” Turner says.

Vaccinations begin tomorrow. Mosaic hopes to vaccinate 40
staff members on the first day, building up to 100 a day and eventually 200 a
day. Vaccinations will pause for the Christmas break, then resume next week.
Both vaccinations require two shots with significant intervals between shots.

Turner says the announcement lifted the spirits of the Mosaic
staff.

“It was quite a joyous time,” Turner says. “You could actually
feel the energy as you’re walking in the building as people were finding out
that the vaccine had arrived. There’s a lot of hope and there’s also eagerness
to start vaccination.”

“I would say it’s an early Christmas present, yes.”

COVID-19 vaccine comes to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph

MALVERN, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State Patrol says a Missouri man died and an Iowa man has been hospitalized after a head-on crash.&nbsp; Johny Joe Ford, 76, Maryvile, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Sunday crash near Malvern, Iowa.

Maryville man dies after head-on crash in Iowa

It might well be the most wonderful time of the year, but it
also is the most opportunistic time of the year for thieves.

And while some crime is beyond your control, some is not.

St. Joseph Crime Prevention Sergeant Roy Hoskins says there
are steps you can take to keep from being ripped off.

“People don’t realize that you can schedule deliveries for specific
times,” Hoskins tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “You can have them
sent to an alternate location; if you have a workplace where you can have them
sent there. You can track them. I know on some of them, UPS specifically, they’ll
notify you when it’s on the way and you can look on the app and actually see
the truck as it’s driving to your house.”

Hoskins says you can put a lock box on your porch or you can
give one-time access to delivery personnel, allowing them to place packages in
the garage.

A package left on a porch can attract the attention of thieves,
according to Hoskins.

“People are opportunistic in their crimes,” according to
Hoskins. “Not very many people plan on coming to your house, but if they happen
to be trolling around, looking for that type of thing, and they see one dropped
off or they see it out in plain sight, that’s definitely going to be enticing.”

Hoskins says doorbell cameras do help, not just in chasing
thieves from a porch, but in providing valuable evidence to police for their
investigation.

Hoskins cautions residents to also be on the lookout for
scams.

“What I’m hearing a lot the last couple of days is Apple
Support. A lady got 18 calls yesterday morning and some of them were Apple
Support,” Hoskins says, adding that scams come in trends and the Apple Support seems
to be the latest trend.

He says the best thing to do is to hang up and cut off the
conversation. Never give personal information over the phone.

St. Joseph police also will help. If you give them a call, an
officer will review problem spots around your home and the best places to mount
security cameras.

PLATTE COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Monday in Platte County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Ford Escape driven by Rhonda M. Crane, 60, Kansas City, Mo., was southbound on Interstate 29 just south of 64th Street.

The vehicle rear-ended a 2010 Ford Fusion that had stopped in traffic from an earlier crash. The impact pushed the Fusion into a 2013 Chevy Malibu driven by Katie L. Schweder, 37, St. Joseph that was also stopped from the earlier accident.

EMS transported Schweder to St. Luke's North and Crane to North Kansas City Hospital. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

early this morning in which a homeowner reported four individuals broke
into his home, beat him, and stole various items.

Police say the invasion happened at around 1:20 this morning

the four were armed with at least one knife and a hammer.

Two arrested in St. Joseph shooting

A Helena couple is dead and the Andrew County Sheriff’s
Department suspects murder-suicide.

The Andrew County Sheriff’s Department reports receiving a
call late Friday night from a man who stated he was going to shoot himself. The
man then cut off the call. The man called back minutes later, stating he was in
an argument with another, he would not go to jail, and would kill himself
before authorities arrived.

Deputies arrived at the home in Helena very early Saturday
morning. Deputies found a 51-year-old woman dead of a single gunshot wound. A
58-year-old man was found, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A new release from the sheriff’s department says officers

Department suspects murder-suicide.The Andrew County Sheriff’s Department reports receiving a
call late Friday night from a man who stated he was going to shoot himself. The
man then cut off the call. The man called back minutes later, stating he was in
an argument with another, he would not go to jail, and would kill himself
before authorities arrived.Deputies arrived at the home in Helena very early Saturday
morning. Deputies found a 51-year-old woman dead of a single gunshot wound. A
58-year-old man was found, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.A new release from the sheriff’s department says officers
recovered a small revolver and a handwritten letter.The investigation continues.
