St. Joseph health officials report one additional death related to COVID-19 Friday.

The victim was a woman in her 50s. Buchanan County’s death toll stands at 154. There were also 34 new cases in the county Friday for a pandemic total of 9,687.

Mosaic Life Care reports 32 patients in its system. There are 29 patients in the St. Joseph hospital and three in Maryville.

Mosaic's COVID patient number has stayed below 40 the entire week after being in the low-to-mid-90s in November.

Andrew County reports five new cases and one new death Friday for a total of 1,911 cases and 19 fatalities.

Statewide, Missouri reports 1,957 additional cases (456,530 total) and 14 new deaths (6,739 total)&nbsp; Friday.

Since Wednesday, Kansas has seen a jump of 2,168 cases and 61 new deaths. Doniphan County reports 894 cases (+14), Atchison County, KS reports 1,432 (+13) and Brown County reports 1,176 cases (+4).

One new COVID-19 related death reported in Buchanan, Andrew County Friday

An overturned semi on Friday afternoon blocked traffic for several hours near the Love's Truck Stop at the Interstate 29 and Highway 169 interchange.

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. A semi pulling a trailer exited southbound I-29 and attempted to turn north onto 169.

"The driver of the semi did not slow down," St. Joseph Police sergeant Brett Kelley said. "As he came down the ramp, he struck another vehicle and overturned the semi, causing to block the south bound lanes of 169."

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Sergeant Kelley. Citations will be issued, but haven't been yet as the accident remains under investigation.

As of 6:45 p.m. Friday, crews were still out on the road, trying to clear the scene and re-open the road.&nbsp;

Semi crash near I-29, Highway 169 interchange blocks traffic for hours

Mosaic Life Care has a new COVID-19 vaccine appointment request list, which went live at 5 p.m. Friday.

The web address remains the same - <a href="https://www.mymlc.com/vaccine">MyMLC.com/vaccine</a>.

Those who sign up need to enter their name, address, phone number, the last four digits of their social security number, date of birht and email. 

Appointments are made based on vaccine supply and the order in which requests are received.

When an appointment becomes available, the person will get a text and&nbsp; an&nbsp;email, and they’ll have 24 hours to book the appointment.

Even if the person doesn’t book it in time, their name stays on the request list.

Mosaic Chief Medical officer, Dr. Davin Turner, thanks the public for their patience, as they continue to try and make vaccine sign up more efficient.

"We do hope within the next week that we have the ability to use phone call-in services," Turner said. "We are working very hard on this."

Until that happens, Turner says the main idea with the new request list is to make the process of signing up for vaccine much quicker. The most common frustration amongst patients was being unable to sign up for appointments online.

"As we move through the list, based on what number you are, as we release vaccine, you'll get your email," Turner said. "You won't have to continuously go back to the website."

Mosaic has vaccinated over 2,500 people in its system since Monday with another 1,000 doses ready to go this coming week.

Along with the vaccination center at the former Gordman's in the East Hills Shopping Center in St. Joseph, Mosaic has been working with the Nodaway County and Tri-County Health Departments to get more vaccine administered in those areas.

Nodaway County vaccinated over 700 people Tuesday, while Tri-County Health looks to vaccinate 540 people at a <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/9d459ed0-65a0-4492-8678-b2db5a05e2aa">clinic in Albany on Monday</a>.

"We make sure there is a fair distribution based on the population and the want for the vaccine in those areas," Turner said.

Once people have received their first dose of the vaccine through Mosaic, their appointment for the second dosage will be made in a timely fashion. The recommended window between the two doses is three weeks.

While the state looks for more vaccine doses from the federal government, Mosaic&nbsp; continues to look for volunteers to help them administer vaccine.

Nursing students from Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State, along with local law enforcement, have assisted efforts so far, but Turner says more help is always needed.

"Our own caregivers are volunteering their time on their days off to come in," Turner said. "I've actually been asked by some folks in the general public, 'Can I come help in some way?' And we do need help with registration."

Registration help is needed, because appointments have been filled almost instantly and interest in the vaccine remains high. Turner is encouraged by the fact that people are eager to get the shot.

He says hospital personnel will likely be wearing masks until sometime next spring, but for the general public, more vaccinations means a quicker return to normal life.

"Folks would really like to be able to go out without a mask," Turner said. "The more people we can vaccinate, the more I think we'll be able to see the mayor and city council assess the situation, looking at the positivity rate and hospitalizations, and looking at when they can give some relief to the city."

Mosaic Life Care launches new COVID vaccine appointment request list Friday

The Tri-County Health Department is hosting a mass COVID-19 vaccination event in Albany on Monday in collaboration with Mosaic Life Care.

The event at Albany High School is by appointment only. The appointments are being offered to people on Tri County's vaccine waiting list, <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/0e654fe3-a083-4f84-a2fd-cde6b7d2b39a">which was paused on Tuesday</a>.

Tri-County Health administrator Teresa McDonald says their waiting list has over 1,400 names on it, and the collaboration with Mosaic is critical in getting a vaccine to those who need it most.

"With us only having three vaccinators in office, the collaboration with Mosaic is essential to us," McDonald told the Post. "Having that large clinic, we're looking to vaccinate about 540 people on that day."

McDonald says those on the waiting list who do not get a vaccine Monday will have more opportunities with smaller clinics coming in the following week.

There'll also be more mass vaccination clinics across Region H, like the <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/9f589184-c022-4e9b-9617-07580161c8be">one in Savannah on Friday</a>.

Once the 1,400 people on Tri-County's waiting list are vaccinated, McDonald says the list will either be reopened or there'll be a new system in place to allow people to make their own appointments.

"We will be putting out a link for people to register for their own appointments once we have cleared this waiting list," McDonald said.

Hospitalizations stable, no COVID-related deaths in Buchanan County for third straight day

SAVANNAH - The Andrew County Health Department is set to vaccinate nearly 2,000 people on Friday at a mass COVID-19 vaccine clinic - the first of its kind in northwest Missouri.

Andrew County is part of Region H - a 15-county cluster in the northwest part of the state.

Jayne White and Andrew Hoffman, who are employed by the Andrew County Health Department, signed a contract to become the Regional Implementation Team leads across the entire northwest region.

"We partnered with Blair Shock, (the administrator), from the Clinton County Health Department to help us with this endeavor, too" White said.

White, the Public Nurse Manager for Andrew County's Health Department, had a week to plan the first mass COVID vaccination clinic in Region H with Hoffman, who's the Andrew County health department administrator.

They also partnered with the Missouri National Guard, Andrew County Sheriff's office, the Savannah Police Department and several other agencies to run and coordinate the event.

The first mass clinic will be in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church in Savannah. It's a drive-thru event, in which people had to make an appointment in advance.

Any Missourian in Phase 1a and 1b can sign up. This includes medical personnel, residents of long-term care, anyone 65 or older and adults considered to be at high-risk.

White says there'll be mass vaccination clinics like this across the region on a weekly basis for people who couldn't get a shot this first time around.

"In every Highway Patrol Troop region, there's a large, mass vaccination clinic every week," she said. "So, every week there'll be one in Region H. Next week, it'll be somewhere else. By the fourth week, we'll be back here in Savannah to do the second dose and potentially some first doses for individuals."

Region H has a total of 1,950 doses of the Pfizer vaccine for this Friday's event. Much like the rest of Missouri, vaccine distribution has been slow in Andrew County.

Andrew County received 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine earlier this month to administer to medical workers and long-term care residents. Those individuals will receive their second dosage next week.

"We keep putting orders in and keep hoping that we get some," White said. "This is huge, though. This RIT team is huge, because we know there's access to vaccine somewhere in Region H."

Previously, the Andrew County Health Department had a vaccine waiting list. The list did not guarantee an appointment, but health officials made one attempt to call people on the list age 65 or older when vaccine became available.

That effort alone was labor intensive, and White says the wait list will not be opened back up.

"My staff has been calling all day," White said. "Probably eight hour days since last Friday. That's a huge thing and the phone is constantly ringing. That's a tough thing to do. Plus, the state is setting up a system to help with registration and things like that, so that's what people will want to be watching for.

"We will keep people notified through Facebook and the media about events that are coming up. As we move forward, they'll be able to sign up that way."

White says many of the rural hospitals and health departments in Region H don't have the sufficient supplies or staffing to distribute the COVID vaccine in mass quantities.

The Tri-County Health Department, for example, has three total nurses trying to coordinate and administer vaccine in DeKalb, Gentry and Worth counties.

The hope now, though, is that these weekly mass clinics will help those who've had difficulty getting access to a COVID vaccination.

"It's an attempt to get vaccine out to these communities and to be able to do it in large quantities," White said. "Some of our rural hospitals don't have the staff or manpower to get this much vaccine out at a time."

As we move forward, they'll be able to sign up that way."White says many of the rural hospitals and health departments in Region H don't have the sufficient supplies or staffing to distribute the COVID vaccine in mass quantities.The Tri-County Health Department, for example, has three total nurses trying to coordinate and administer vaccine in DeKalb, Gentry and Worth counties.The hope now, though, is that these weekly mass clinics will help those who've had difficulty getting access to a COVID vaccination."It's an attempt to get vaccine out to these communities and to be able to do it in large quantities," White said. Andrew County Health Dept. set to vaccinate nearly 2000 people at mass clinic in Savannah

GENTRY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before noon Thursday in Gentry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Ford Focus driven by a 16-year-old girl from Denver, Missouri, was westbound on U.S. 136 two miles east of Albany.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve. The car traveled off the road, struck an embankment and overturned.

Grand River Ambulance transported the girl to Mosaic in Albany. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

United States Senator Roy Blunt asserts the effort to impeach
former President Donald Trump is unconstitutional.

Blunt was one of the 45 Republican senators who voted for a
measure declaring the House effort to impeach Trump fell outside of its
constitutional powers.

“Well, I think the purpose for presidential impeachment in the
Constitution is to remove a president from office,” Blunt tells St. Joseph
Post. “I don’t think the purpose in the Constitution is to punish a person
after they’ve left office.”

Five Republicans joined the 50 Democrats in the U.S. Senate to
defeat the measure, but it provided a sure sign that the votes aren’t there to
convict Trump of inciting violence against the United States government in his
speech prior to the January 6th Capitol riot.

Blunt says impeachment was never meant to go after a private
citizen, which Trump now is.

“I just think the snap impeachment by the House of
Representatives was a big mistake on their part and at the end of the next
couple of weeks it will be clear I think that they never had a chance to
impeach the president, because he’d already left office,” Blunt says.

Though the Republican senators failed in their effort to
declare the impeachment process unconstitutional, the vote is a clear signal the
Senate will not convict Trump.

Though Blunt believes the process is unconstitutional, he
remains critical of the speech given by Trump from the White House January 6th.

“I’d characterize the speech as reckless,” Blunt says. “The
day of the speech when ask did I want to hear anything more from the president
that day, I said no, the president’s responsible for a lot of what happened
today by his behavior and it was a terrible day for America, but that doesn’t
mean it’s impeachable.”

The pickup traveled off the east side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The pickup struck a guardrail and overturned.

A private vehicle transported a 17-year-old passenger to Mosaic Life Care. Bascue was not injured. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

A man wanted by federal authorities on a variety of charges
might be in the St. Joseph area.

The United States Marshals Service is asking the public for
help in locating Travis Randall Kirkendall, wanted on 12 warrants, ranging from
possession of a controlled substance to burglary.

The Marshals Service is offering a $2,500 reward for
any information leading to the arrest of Kirkendall. He is believed to be in
St. Joseph or the surrounding area. Kirkendall is described as a
white male, 6’4″ tall; 225 pounds; blue eyes and brown hair.

If you have information, call the U.S. Marshall Service at

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Chevy Box Truck driven by Solea Hyenow, 34, Kansas City. MO., was westbound on US. 136 three miles east of Mt. Moriah.

The driver lost control of the truck on the wet road. The truck traveled off the road and overturned.

Mercer County EMS transported Hyenow to Harrison County Community Hospital. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph health officials report no new deaths related to COVID-19 in Buchanan County for the second day in a row.

Only 13 new cases have been reported in the county since Tuesday. Buchanan County's positivity rate has also dipped below 10 percent within the last week.

The county has seen over 9,600 total cases and 153 deaths since the pandemic began.

Mosaic Life Care reports just 28 COVID-19 patients in its system. All 28 of those patients are being treated in the St. Joseph hospital.

Andrew County reports only two more cases Wednesday for a total of 1,903.

Clinton County reports 129 new cases (1,840 total) and two new deaths (63 total). Worth County reported one new death Wednesday. A mostly rural area, Worth County has seen only 201 total cases and two fatalities since the pandemic began.

Statewide, Missouri reports 1,444 new cases Wednesday for a total of 452,937. There have also been 23 new deaths in the state for a pandemic total of 6,709.

Since Monday, Kansas has reported 3,262 new cases (272,517 total) and 96 new deaths (3,718 total). There are over 8,200 Kansans hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Doniphan County, Kansas reports 880 cases (+6), Atchison County, KS reports 1,419 (+7) and Brown County reports 1,172 (+13).

COVID-19 case rate, hospitalizations remain low in the local area Wednesday

A series of winter storms and snowfalls this week have kept Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop H busy across the northwest part of the state.

Between Sunday night and midnight Tuesday morning, the Troop responded to 108 calls for service, including 53 stranded motorist responses and 25 non-injury traffic crashes.

Troop H's Public Information Officer Jake Angle says the area close to the Iowa border was particularly busy due to the heavier snowfall amounts.

"They had close to a foot of snow up by the Iowa line, so they were dealing with some tough conditions up there," Angle said. "That's where a lot of the calls came from, but they were scattered all over the Troop."

Snow, combined with periods of freezing rain, made travel hazardous for much of Monday and into Tuesday morning. The area then woke up to a couple inches of fresh snow Wednesday morning, causing most area schools to call off class three days in a row.

Angle says troopers are trained to deal with adverse weather conditions, but having three straight days of it can be tiring.

"We've had a lot of cars that slid off the road and become stuck," Angle said. "We've had our share of traffic crashes. Just some real tough situations out there, but we've been keeping traffic moving, getting those cars pulled out and doing what we do each and every day. Dealing with inclement weather adds that extra challenge."

The best news from the week - the troop had only one injury accident and no fatal crashes.

"Nobody wants to slide off the road and be involved in a crash," Angle said, "but to only have one injury and no fatalities, you really can't ask for much more."

Better weather is on the way for motorists, with temperatures warming into the upper 30s and low 40s this weekend and into early next week.

Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop H has had a busy week on snowy roads

St. Joseph's Catholic Schools have implemented the Vitality in Catholic Education plan, an effort to stabilize enrollment to schools and eventually grow enrollment. Bishop LeBlond High School Principal Ann Lachowitzer says the schools are not just working on enrolment, but making disciples that learn about Catholic heritage. 

"Forming good citizens who can think well, and speak well, and write well, and who will serve the greater good," Lachowiter says to St. Joseph Post. "The whole point of this particular group that has now been formed, is to make improvements to our Catholic schools in St. Joe."

St. Joseph's Catholic Schools Week this year works to revive Catholic education in St. Joseph. Lachowitzer says parents' view of schooling has changed over the years. 

"At one time a cross on a wall with a saint name on the outside of the building was enough to draw people to the school and here lately, its not enough anymore. We have to go above and beyond," says Lachowitzer. 

Catholic Schools Week is going to look a little different this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Lachowitzer says the schools will have some fun celebrating the week with such things as crazy sock day but they will also focus on prayer. 

"A lot of prayers, a lot of recognition, specifically Roe V. Wade for our high school students and understanding the importance of life and what that means," says Lachowitzer. 

St. Joseph's Catholic Schools Week will  be held January 31 through February 6. St. Joseph's Catholic Schools Vitality Summit will be held online January 31 at 2pm to update the community on the Vitality Plan's progress with stabilizing enrollment.

to sell the $107 million bond issue on the April 6th ballot.

But they insist it is necessary for the St. Joseph School
District to move forward.

School Superintendent Doug Van Zyl says the three high school
system isn’t working any longer with Central High School classes mostly full.

“Where at Benton and Lafayette, we don’t always have all those
classes have enough students and the ones that we do offer, sometimes there’s
eight, nine, 10 kids sitting in that classroom,” Van Zyl tells host Barry Birr
on the KFEQ Hotline. “And so, it’s not a good use of resources either. You
really could have the two classes, one from Benton and Lafayette, together.”

The proposal before voters would convert Benton and Lafayette
High Schools into middle schools and build a second new high school in a
location yet to be determined.

Van Zyl says the new alignment would allow the district to
create a better feeder system which would keep classes together from elementary
school through middle school and then on to high school.

St. Joseph School Board Vice President Lute Atieh says an
outdated school system is holding St. Joseph back.

“When you talk to people that have moved around in the last
five or 10 years and you ask the parents what’s the number one deciding factor
on where you’re going to move and it’s always schools,” according to Atieh. “Schools
and employment are the top two things that are going to drive growth or drive
us the other direction.”

Atieh says he understands this is a major decision which
sparks a lot of emotions among St. Joseph residents. He says he wants voters to
really consider the reasoning of the board before making a decision.

“If you take only the surface information, it’s very easy to make
a decision ‘yes’ or ‘no,’” Atieh says. “But when you dive in a little deeper, and
what we’ve looked at for the last several years, it’s tough to get those level
of details out so a voter can make a very informed decision, not just the
surface or the emotional decision, but what’s going to happen, really, if we can’t
make some progress.”

Under the proposal, Central High School would be upgraded and
the St. Joseph School District would have a two high school system.

winter weather advisory remains in effect in this region until 9 o’clock this
morning.

The
National Weather Service issued the advisory for all of northeastern Kansas,
northwestern Missouri as well as in the southeastern portion of Nebraska and
southwestern Iowa. The advisory includes the cities of Elwood, Wathena, Troy, Atchison,
and Leavenworth…among others…in Kansas. And, St. Joseph, Maryville, Cameron,

The

Snow returns to area, winter weather advisory issued, schools closing

More snow is headed for northwest Missouri late tonight and early tomorrow. 

National Weather Service Meteorologist Pamela Pietrycha with the Pleasant Hill office says another quick moving system will impact the area tonight and into tomorrow morning. 

"We are a little bit cooler then we have been the last several days," says Pietrycha. "Temperatures tonight will drop into the teens and upper twenties, so any leftover snow from the previous system that's still on the road. This will accumulate on top of it. Roads will still be relatively slick tomorrow morning."

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of the area from 9 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Pietrycha warns drivers to be mindful of slick roads during the morning commute. St. Joseph and the surrounding area could see around 1-3 inches of additional snow. Winter weather has already forced school closures yesterday and today.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H has responded to 108 calls for service, 53 stranded motorists, 25 non-injury traffic crashes, one injury traffic accident, and there have not been any fatalities since the snow began yesterday.
