LIVINGSTON COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Friday in Livingston County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Dodge Durango driven by Hannah J. Clibon, 23, Marceline, was westbound on U.S. 36 two miles west of Utica.

The SUV rear-ended a 2003 Kenworth semi driven by Melvin A. Interiano, 38, Kansas City. Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway.

Chillicothe EMS transported Clibon to Hedrick Medical Center. Interiano was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

With just two weeks left in the annual red kettle drive, the Salvation Army is just about halfway to its fundraising goal.

St. Joseph Salvation Army's Major Ronald Key says that through the first weeks of the campaign, bell ringers around St. Joseph have helped bring in nearly half the money they were seeking to raise.

"Our goal is a hundred and eleven thousand, we're just about fifty four now, so just a little under a half way," Key tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So I'm not going to say it's impossible, because it's not, but it's going to be difficult to raise it, so we're just hoping that more people help volunteer." 

Major Key encourages everyone to donate if they haven't yet, saying there are multiple ways to donate, between the kettles and online giving. Bells will be rung until December 24th.

Key says the Salvation Army is down about eight thousand dollars compared to this time last year. 

Key says that there are a few factors that could be contributing to that. 

 "You know what, it just could be that there's more people in need let's say, or maybe they have less expendable money, so somebody who may have given us a five dollar bill before may only give us a dollar, I think that could be a part of it, just because, you know, the COVID is still affecting us, and just everything else," Key says. "So I think that's part of the reason."

Keys adds that it could also simply just be that people haven't given yet and are waiting until later to give their donations. 

Key says with so many people returning to stores this year, it is a little surprising to find donations down, but he is still well aware that people still might be shopping online. 

"You know a lot of people shop in different ways, Amazon and all those kinds of places, they have so many more options to shop from now," Key says. "But once again, I think probably a big part of it, maybe people just have less money to spend, so they're having to decide what's most important."

The Salvation Army is still seeking volunteers as the Red Kettle Drive nears a close, ending on December 24th.

More than 100 children and teenagers received gifts from the
20th Gregg Lynn’s Christmas for Kids Toy Drive.

KESJ Program Director Gregg Lynn says the annual toy drive that
wrapped up with a live broadcast at East Hills Mall in St. Joseph on Black
Friday distributed more than 1,000 Christmas presents to children in foster
care as residents of the YWCA Shelter, and the Noyes Home for Children. The
drive also provided dozens of plush animals to Voices of Courage Children’s
Advocacy Center as well as $9,000 to The Care Portal, Adopt A Family, YWCA
Shelter, and The Noyes Home for Children. 

The toy drive began the first of November. It is an outgrowth
of a simple effort a little more than 20 years ago when an elderly veteran
named Ernie gathered toys for about eight children in his own toy drive. Gregg
Lynn picked up the program where Ernie left off, deciding initially to raise
money and gather toys of the Noyes Home. Lynn says the drive then took on the
challenge of helping children in foster care in the St. Joseph area, It expanded
to include those at the YWCA Shelter.

American companies have been using a variety of incentives to
recruit and retain workers.

Tyson Foods is handing out $50 million in year-end bonuses to
its employees.

Tyson spokesman Derek Burleson says the bonuses in part are a
thank you for all those employees who kept coming to work, even during the
coronavirus restrictions.

“These are going to be one-time bonuses, ranging anywhere from
$300 to $700 based on their seniority and those are going to be distributed
beginning this month and, again, we’re just really excited to be able to say,
‘Thank you’ to our team members and recognize all of their hard work,” Burleson
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Tyson has spent more than $500 million in wage increases and
bonuses for frontline workers over the past year.

Tyson employs more than 700 workers at its St. Joseph food
processing plan, working three shifts. Tyson also runs a plant in Kansas City.

Burleson says it’s no secret a workforce shortage has forced
companies to re-think how best to keep good workers.

“I think it’s an issue and a challenge for companies in a
number of industries,” Burleson says. “Again, what we’ve tried to focus on is
making sure that our wages are more than competitive, making sure that we’re
offering benefits that are unique to Tyson Foods and really set us apart.”

Tyson says begun a number of initiatives to retain its
workers. The company began the Upward Academy program five years ago. The
program helps workers develop life skills, such as financial and digital
literacy. It offers classes in English as a Second Language, high school
equivalency classes, and help in qualifying for United States citizenship.
Upward Pathways works within the processing plant to develop the skills of
workers and help workers qualify for various job certifications. Another
program, 1+2 Maintenance Training helps workers earn maintenance jobs.

Flexible work schedules attract some workers and seems
especially popular in some of the more rural settings. A pilot program in the
Amarillo, Texas plant experiments with providing free child care.

Burleson says it’s no secret getting good workers is difficult
right now and he’s not sure when the workforce shortage will ease.

“It’s difficult to speculate, but I know that again we’re
doing everything we can to invest in our workforce and make sure that Tyson
Foods is the employer of choice in those communities where we operate.”

Tyson operates food processing plans in Concordia, Dexter,
Monett, Noel, and Sedalia as well, employing 5,600 Missouri workers with an
annual economic impact of nearly $800 million.

The pickup rear-ended another vehicle that left the scene of the accident. The Tacoma pulled to the shoulder following the accident. A private vehicle transported Hunziger to Mosaic Life Care. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man injured after Andrew Co. rear-end crash

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman in connection with a crime reported in November.

Just before 9:00AM on November 20, police responded to a burglary that had occurred at an apartment in the 200 block North 3rd in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

 The subsequent investigation determined that forced entry had been made during the night into an apartment located within the apartment complex. 

The suspects took clothing and household items.

 Two suspects identified as Kala Woods and Janice Jimenez-Saavedra were taken into custody on November 20 and charged with burglary and theft in the case.

On Wednesday police arrested Tamara K. Mies, 56, Atchison, on a District Court warrant for burglary and theft. She is being held on a $25,000 Bond, according to Wilson.&nbsp;

Police have arrested Mies seven times over the past six years for a variety of alleged crimes including aggravated failure to appear, according to online jail records.

Police arrest 3rd suspect for apartment burglary

The American Red Cross is continuing to battle a historic blood shortage.

Red Cross Spokesman Joe Zydlo says that the blood shortage has felt like its been going on since late June, and the challenge right now for the Red Cross is that it isn't seeing the donations it typically sees this time of year.

"Typically, the blood supply will bounce back when we get into early September and schools are back in, and pre-pandemic that's typically what happened, it just has not responded," Zydlo tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And I think what's happened is while we've gotten more people to come and donate, there's also been a higher demand for folks that donate."

Zydlo says donations are typically down during the Christmas/New Year's holiday season.&nbsp; Also, it's difficult to get first time donors&nbsp; to come out during the holidays.

Zydlo says last year the Red Cross saw a surge of donors coming to donate while the Red Cross tested for COVID-19 antibodies.

But this year, with the Red Cross not testing for antibodies, Zydlo says that could be one factor causing people to not be as receptive of the current blood shortage.  But on top of that, he says with vaccines being widely available, more people are are more interested in taking vacations and things they missed out on last year than giving blood.

Along with those factors, Zydlo says that there is also one more important piece of information to consider.

"There's also been a higher demand for blood products," Zydlo says. "Over the last two months, the Red Cross nationally has had to collect ten thousand more additional blood donations over the course of a week."

Zydlo says the Red Cross needs to collect nearly 13,000 donations nationwide for hospitals, and when you add another 10,ooo per week, that's a large increase in demand.

"Part of that is more elective surgeries, people that were pausing that last year weren't doing that, hospitals weren't necessarily doing that for a few months they took that off," Zydlo explains.

Zydlo says those elective procedures, such as hip or knee replacement, need blood, and with those being put off over the past year, the demand for blood wasn't as high.

American Red Cross still dealing with historic blood shortage

As winter weather settles in and flu season approaches, St. Joseph health officials are closely watching for the potential of more flu cases than last year, as well as the possible arrival of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

St. Joseph Health Department spokesperson Stephanie Malita says the number of flu cases locally, so far, aren't jumping off the page, but the peak of flu season typically won't happen until February or March.

"So, getting that flu vaccine now is going to help protect you from flu during the holiday season," Malita said.

Flu activity during the 2020-21 season was very low nationwide, likely due to COVID-19 prevention measures. In the first eight weeks of surveillance for this flu season, however, Missouri has reported 853 positive influenza cases already.

There were only 1,795 total flu cases reported in Missouri last season.

"We feel like last year, the flu cases were so non-existent, because so many people wore masks," says Debra Bradley, director of the St. Joseph Health Department. "They socially distanced, they stayed home, they washed their hands. So, if people would continue to do that, then that would also have a positive impact on the number of flu cases."

Area health officials are also preparing for the arrival of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, which was confirmed in the St. Louis area in the first week of December - the first known case in Missouri.

At least 19 states and 50 countries have reported Omicron so far. While it hasn't been discovered in northwest Missouri yet, Bradley says they're watching for it carefully.

"It really is still too early to make any big decisions based on it," Bradley noted. "But, it's looking like the Omicron variant is a little bit more contagious."

Early indications from South Africa suggest the severity of Omicron may not be as bad, as hospitalizations there have not risen dramatically. However, the local area continues to deal with rising cases of the Delta variant.

From Dec. 2-6, the St. Joseph Health Department reported 253 new COVID-19 cases in Buchanan County. The positivity rate in the county jumped 4.73 percentage points since last week. The positivity rate now stands at 14.55%.

In total, COVID cases in Buchanan County from October to November increased by 252%. The 515 cases reported through the first week of December is over half of the 1,004 cases reported in all of November.

Mosaic Life Care has also reported a sizable increase in COVID hospitalizations. As of Wednesday, Mosaic is treating 50 COVID patients in its system - 45 in St. Joseph, three in Maryville and two in Albany.

"It's probably going to continue to go up over the next few weeks," Bradley said of the local COVID numbers, "because of the continued holidays. We have a lot of holidays in December, and people are just gathering together."

Malita says whether it's COVID, the flu, or some other respiratory illness where the symptoms can overlap, the prevention measures remain the same.

"Washing hands is always key," she said. "Maintaining that physical distance, especially when you're out in public around those you don't typically spend time with. Wear a mask. If you're not feeling well, stay home."

Bradley emphasizes the best defense against the flu and COVID-19 is vaccination. Flu vaccines are available for those as young as six months. 

The first doses of the COVID vaccines are available for anyone older than five, and the booster shots for those 18 and older who have been vaccinated against COVID for at least six months.

"We just want people to have a safe and happy holiday," Bradley said, "and the best way to do that would be to get vaccinated."

In the first eight weeks of surveillance for this flu season, however, Missouri has reported 853 positive influenza cases already.There were only 1,795 total flu cases reported in Missouri last season."We feel like last year, the flu cases were so non-existent, because so many people wore masks," says Debra Bradley, director of the St. Joseph Health Department. "They socially distanced, they stayed home, they washed their hands. So, if people would continue to do that, then that would also have a positive impact on the number of flu cases."Area health officials are also preparing for the arrival of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, which was confirmed in the St. Louis area in the first week of December - the first known case in Missouri.At least 19 states and 50 countries have reported Omicron so far. While it hasn't been discovered in northwest Missouri yet, Bradley says they're watching for it carefully."It really is still too early to make any big decisions based on it," Bradley noted. "But, it's looking like the Omicron variant is a little bit more contagious."Early indications from South Africa suggest the severity of Omicron may not be as bad, as hospitalizations there have not risen dramatically. However, the local area continues to deal with rising cases of the Delta variant.From Dec. 2-6, the St. Joseph Health Department reported 253 new COVID-19 cases in Buchanan County. The positivity rate in the county jumped 4.73 percentage points since last week. The positivity rate now stands at 14.55%.In total, COVID cases in Buchanan County from October to November increased by 252%. The 515 cases reported through the first week of December is over half of the 1,004 cases reported in all of November.Mosaic Life Care has also reported a sizable increase in COVID hospitalizations. As of Wednesday, Mosaic is treating 50 COVID patients in its system - 45 in St. Joseph, three in Maryville and two in Albany."It's probably going to continue to go up over the next few weeks," Bradley said of the local COVID numbers, "because of the continued holidays. We have a lot of holidays in December, and people are just gathering together."Malita says whether it's COVID, the flu, or some other respiratory illness where the symptoms can overlap, the prevention measures remain the same."Washing hands is always key," she said. "Maintaining that physical distance, especially when you're out in public around those you don't typically spend time with. Wear a mask. If you're not feeling well, stay home."Bradley emphasizes the best defense against the flu and COVID-19 is vaccination. Flu vaccines are available for those as young as six months. St. Joseph health officials watching for Omicron, higher flu case numbers

ATCHISON COUNTY—A Kansas man and woman died in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Wednesday in Atchison County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by&nbsp; Derek R F&nbsp;Wohletz, 37,&nbsp;Tonganoxie, was southbound on U.S. 73 approximately three miles south of Atchison.

The Camry traveled left of center into the northbound lane and struck a&nbsp; northbound 2002 Toyota Corolla driven by Felieca K. Paxton, 26, Atchison, head-on.

Paxton and a passenger Jovonnie D&nbsp;Franklin, 33, Atchison, were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to&nbsp;Lindsborg-Pruitt Funeral Home. 

EMS transported a 7-year-old boy from Atchison to Amberwell Atchison Hospital and a 6-year-old boy from Atchison to Children's Mercy. EMS transported Wohletz to KU Medical Center.

The adults were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP. The KHP did not have details on child seat/seatbelt status for the children.

Missouri woman injured after van goes airborne

State Sen. Dan Hegeman of Cosby says state worker compensation
will be one of the top issues facing legislators when they return to Jefferson
City next month.

Hegeman, a Republican who chairs the Senate Appropriations
Committee, says low state pay is costing the state some quality workers.

“We are really losing employees in some really needed areas,
such as mental health, such as our veterans’ homes, keeping the staff there;
correctional workers,” Hegeman tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Hegeman says there is room in the state budget for
across-the-board state employee pay raises and suggests the legislature could
even meet prior to the next regular session to address the issue.

Gov. Mike Parson has proposed a 5.5% pay raise for state
employees. He will also ask legislators to set a $15/hour minimum wage for
state employees. The governor would like to provide state worker pay raises by
the first of February.

Hegeman says the state can afford to loosen the purse strings
in a number of areas. He says legislators need to review school funding.

“I think keeping up with elementary and secondary education,
fully funding the Foundation Formula, and trying to do more on the
transportation categorical is important to me.”

Federal funds disbursed by Congress to the states to help in
the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and help recover from its blow to
state economies must be dealt with early in the legislative session. Hegeman
says COVID relief money must be allocated by March.

“So, there’s some pressures early on to maybe do a
supplemental budget on this year’s budget, but then also look at next year’s
budget which will have a lot of (those) federal dollars in the Fiscal Year ‘23
budget,” Hegeman says.

Hegeman says the federal funds from the American Rescue Plan
might need to be handled separately, but he says that likely will be up to the
House, where all budget bills originate. Hegeman says none of the federal funds
should be spent to pay for on-going expenses, but should be reserved for
one-time expenses.

“So, like deferred maintenance type of projects or some new
capital projects out there,” Hegeman says. “One-time monies for one-time
purposes.”

Hegeman is pleased with the current state of the state budget.
He worries though about the effect of voter-approved Medicaid expansion, which
he points out didn’t contain a funding mechanism.

“So, I would look for a mechanism to maybe help stabilize that
and continue that for the future,” Hegeman says. “At some point it will impact
our General Revenue budget and it will impact all those entities that rely on
the General Revenue portion of the budget.”

The Missouri General Assembly meets for the new legislative
session next month. The governor’s office estimates the state employee pay
raise the governor suggests would cost the state $218 million annually. The
governor’s proposal would add to the 2% state employee pay raise scheduled to
go into effect in January.

According to Police Chief Mike Wilson, a pickup driven by Thad Jenkins, St. Joseph, was eastbound at U.S. 59 and 10th Street in Atchison.

The pickup entered the intersection on a green light when a southbound skateboard ridden by a 14-year-old boy entered the intersection and collided with the truck.

Two adults are dead after a structure fire south of Gower Tuesday morning.

The Clinton County Sheriff's Office began receiving multiple 911 calls about the fire just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Gower and Plattsburg Fire, along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Tri-County Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Crews discovered two adults victims who perished at the scene, along with several small animals.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The identification of the victims has not yet been released.

Two people dead after structure fire south of Gower Tuesday morning

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Just after 8:30a.m. Monday, officers responded to the 1500 block South 8th Street in Atchison to investigate reported trespassing, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers located a suspect later identified as 27-year-old Jason C. Price of Atchison several blocks.

Price ran from officers. He was apprehended in the 1000 block South 7th and he was in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to Wilson.

Price is jailed on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; Price has been jailed in Atchison on a variety of charges over a dozen times in the past ten years, according to online jail records. He has previous convictions that include theft, burglary, criminal damage to property and attempt to flee and elude law enforcement, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Police arrest Kansas felon again after reported trespassing

A dean from the University of South Carolina Upstate has been
appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs at Missouri Western
State University.

Laura Reynolds will not become provost until the middle of
next year, July 5th.

Reynolds currently is dean of the College of Education, Human Performance, and Health at the
University of South Carolina Upstate.

“I am
confident that Laura’s combination of experience, skills and enthusiasm will be
a tremendous asset for Missouri Western as she leads Academic Affairs,” MWSU
President Elizabeth Kennedy said in a written statement released by the
university. “She will ably lead the implementation of our new Master Academic
Plan and Academic Program Review, will expand our commitment to our applied
learning mission, and will help us identify programs and strategies to continue
meeting the workforce needs of the region we serve.”

Reynolds
has been at USC Upstate since 2018. Previously, she served as a faculty member
and administrator at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

"I
am honored to be joining Missouri Western, and am excited to contribute to the
impact it has on the lives of students as well as the region and state," Reynolds
said in a written statement. "The faculty and staff at MWSU are passionate
about the students and community they serve, and the impact on students is
evident. I believe the applied learning mission of Missouri Western, combined
with the commitment of faculty and staff and excellent strategic and academic
planning create even greater opportunities to support the success of
students."

The
provost and vice president of academic affairs is Missouri Western’s chief

St. Joseph records 3 more COVID-19 deaths as positivity rate spikes

HARRISON COUNTY —A St. Joseph man was injured in an accident just before 11p.m. Monday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Chevy Tahoe driven by&nbsp; Tyler J. Travis, 39, St. Joseph, was northbound on MO 13 four miles south of Bethany.

The vehicle traveled off the east side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The SUV traveled back across and off the west side of the highway.

NTA ambulance transported Travis to Harrison County Community Hospital. The MSHP did not have seat belt usage information.

HARRISON COUNTY —A St. Joseph man was injured in an accident just before 11p.m. Monday in Harrison County.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Chevy Tahoe driven by&nbsp; Tyler J. Travis, 39, St. Joseph, was northbound on MO 13 four miles south of Bethany.The vehicle traveled off the east side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The SUV traveled back across and off the west side of the highway.NTA ambulance transported Travis to Harrison County Community Hospital. The MSHP did not have seat belt usage information.

CLINTON COUNTY—A boy was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Monday in Gower.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy Silverado driven by Steven A. Kline, 39, Agency, was westbound in the parking lot at 100 Smith Street,&nbsp;East Buchanan Elementary school, in Gower.

A 10-year-old boy from Gower who was leaving school, walking south across the parking lot struck the right front of the pickup. The pickup tire ran over the boy's foot.

Tri-County EMS transported the boy to Mosaic Life Care for treatment of a minor injury. The MSHP released no additional details.

10-year-old injured after accident in school parking lot

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on drug charges in connection with two recent investigation.

Just after 10a.m. Saturday, police arrested Allison R. Blakley, 25, Atchison, in the 700 block Kansas Avenue. She is being held due to a District Court warrant for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement, and criminal damage to property, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

This warrant was associated with a case officers investigated&nbsp; on November 15 when a police officer on patrol observed Blakley, known to have active warrants for her arrest, as a passenger in a vehicle near 10th and U.S. 59 in Atchison.

The officer stopped the vehicle in the 1000 block U.S.59. Blakley got out of the vehicle and ran to a wooded area north of U.S. 59. She was apprehended and the subsequent investigation that followed led to the recovery of methamphetamine. During the warrant arrest on Saturday officers found Blakley to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia resulting in additional charges.

Since February 0f 2019, police have arrested her four time for failure to appear, according to online jail records.

Kansas woman hid in wooded area before arrest on drug warrant

HOLT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Sunday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford F150 driven by Wyman R. Mather, 73, Weeping Water, Nebraska, was northbound in the driving lane on Interstate 29 three miles south of Mound City.

The Ford's towed unit became unattached but the safety chain remained attached. As the Ford swerved into the passing lane, a northbound 2017 Honda Accord driven by Terry J. Wilson, 54, Bellvue, Nebraska, struck the rear drivers side door of the pickup. Both vehicles traveled off the road.&nbsp;

The Ford pickup struck an embankment an overturned. The Honda came to rest on the undercarriage of the Ford.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Mather to Mosaic Life Care. Wilson was not injured.&nbsp; Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.
