HOLT COUNTY —A Missouri man was injured in an accident just before 10:30p.m. Sunday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Jason J. Hoffman, 39, Forest City, was eastbound on U.S. 59 at Raintree Road a mile and a half east of Oregon.

The vehicle traveled off the south side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned. Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Hoffman to Mosaic Life Care. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY—A northwest Missouri teen was injured in an accident just after noon Saturday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Kawasaki ATV driven by a 13-year-old boy from Hopkins was southbound on Ivory Road at 185th Road one mile north of Pickering.

The ATV traveled off the road to avoid another vehicle. The driver was ejected from the ATV when it struck a barbed wire fence. The ATV and driver came to rest in a field west of Ivory Road.

Nodaway County EMS transported the teen to Mosaic in Maryville. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

ATCHISON COUNTY—A Kansas man jailed earlier this month on an alleged bond violation is back in custody.

On Thursday, police arrested 31-year-old Kyle A. Lawley of Atchison,&nbsp; on a District Court warrant for violation of a protective order, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

In July, police arrested him for alleged domestic battery; physical contact, according to online jail records.

St. Joseph man ejected from vehicle in violent crash

BUCHANAN COUNTY —Six people were injured in a 4-vehicle crash just before 6:30p.m. Friday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Peterbilt semi driven by Hunter A. Kathol, 22, Irene, South Dakota, was southbound on Interstate 29 just south of the downtown St. Joseph exit approaching vehicles slowing for construction traffic.

The semi rear-ended a 2013 Toyota Camry driven by Linda K. Brown, 44, St. Joseph. The impact pushed the Camry into a 2009 Ford Escape driven by Sherry B. Johnson, 54, Raymore. The impact pushed the Ford off the east side of the highway.

After impact, the Camry continued south and struck a 2017 Mitsubishi SUV driven by Christina A. Nikes, 53, Savannah.

A private vehicle transported Brown and three passengers in the Camry identified as Courtney J. Brown, 22; Zonlin N. Yang, 23; and a 17-year-old boy all of St. Joseph&nbsp; to Mosaic Life Care. Buchanan County EMS transported Nikes and a passenger in the SUV Lorna R. Protzman, 55, Savannah, to Mosaic. Kathol and Johnson were not injured. All were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating theft from a store in Atchison have made an arrest.

On Wednesday, police arrested 40-year-old Carl D. Griffin, Jr., 40, St. Joseph, on a District Court warrant for theft in connection to the theft of two chainsaws from the Hardware Store, 609 Commercial, on August 31.

Make sure when you’re handing out candy this Halloween you
keep it away from your pets.

Dr. Melanie Barnes, a veterinarian with Friends of the Animal
Shelter of St. Joseph, reminds pet owners candy can be dangerous for pets.

“Make sure that your bowl of candy or your bags of candy or your
little buckets of candy that maybe the kids have come home with stay up and away
from the pets,” Barnes tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “Obviously, I
think most people know chocolate’s a big no-no. Heavier, darker chocolate is what
is more of an issue for pets. But, at the same time, we just do not recommend
any chocolate ingestion. We try and avoid it at all cost.”

Another big no-no is Xylitol, also called birch sugar, a sugar
substitute often found in sugar-free candy and gum.

“Gum is the big one,” Barnes says. “So, we need to be very
cautious of what the ingredients are in the candies and the gum-type things
that your kids are getting or that you’re buying, because that is really toxic,
can be kidney toxic, neurologically toxic. So, make sure Xylitol is not an
ingredient on any of your candy or things you’re giving out or, if it is, and
your pet ingests it, you need to call your vet right away.”

Barnes cautions to keep the candy for trick-or-treaters in a
bowl out of the reach of your pets.

St. Joseph health officials report 49 new coronavirus cases
since last reporting on Monday.

The St. Joseph Health Department says 18 were reported on
Tuesday, 14 on Wednesday, and 17 on Thursday. The Buchanan County positivity
rate remains at 5.14%.

Mosaic Life Care reports it is treating 22 COVID-19 patients
in its system; 21 in St. Joseph and one in Maryville.

After children were unable to go out trick or treating last year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, they will return this year, walking door-to-door, asking for candy.

Executive Director Greater Kansas City/northwest Missouri chapter of the Red Cross Randee Krumwiede says that in the midst of the pandemic, trick or treating might look a little different this year, as the Red Cross advises some extra safety precautions, such as masking up.

"Making the cloth mask as part of your costume for your children, a costume mask is not a safe substitute for a cloth mask," Krumwiede tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And so we want to really avoid wearing that costume mask also over the cloth mask as it can make breathing a little bit difficult, so just kind of reminding to wear our masks and mask up as we go out trick or treating."

She also advises people to not trick or treat in large groups, and to be sure to hand sanitize after every stop.

Krumwiede says the Red Cross doesn't want to ruin the fun of the season, however.

"We just want people to be safe, we certainly don't want to interrupt the fun and we want kids to have a good time trick or treating, but just really want to emphasize that the pandemic is real, it's still there," Krumwiede says.

Krumwiede advises parents to make sure their kids still wear the cloth mask, as well as washing their hands at home and sanitizing between stops.

"Just the basic stuff that we've been really vigilant and diligent about over Halloween is here and the American Red Cross is advising kids to stay safe as they return to trick or treating after being forced inside last year due to the pandemic.

Krumwiede says there is one safety tip that will never change, make sure that you can be seen and carry a flashlight.

"Kids love to carry flashlights anyways, so what a fun way to add to the holiday experience and keep themselves safe as well," Krumwiede says. "Also, might want to add reflective tape, you know put that reflective tape on our costumes, or around your trick or treat bags, anything that can just alert attention that there's a child there so we can be safer."

American Red Cross says to be safe as Trick or Treating returns this Halloween

As the fall season rolls on, the green leaves in trees are slowly starting to turn shades of orange, red and yellow.

Missouri Department of Conservation forester Lonnie Messbarger says though with the little rain and extreme heats we saw before the fall season, the colors this year on trees may not be as impressive.

"Well on average, this time of year would be normalish peak fall color, but I think our peak is going to be a little later and it may not be as impressive because of the weather," Messbarger tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post

Messbarger says typically the best fall color in leaves comes with an ample amount of rain long before the fall comes and cool temperatures.

Messbarger says when viewing leaves you can typically find them anywhere, but says the conservation advises in Northwest Missouri the best are along the River bluffs.

"So the bluff is going to be that really tall hilly stuff and it's usually forested, because it's to steep to do anything else, so that's going to have a lot of trees on it," Messbarger says. "And then, you know between Kansas City and St. Joe a little further north of St. Joe there's a lot of Sugar Maple thrown in, which has some of the better colors.

Messbarger says when it comes to the types of trees that produce the best color, it all comes down to personal preference

"Depends on what you like, I mean, I think most people will really enjoy the colors you see in Sugar Maple in a good year," Messbarger explains.

But the sugar maples aren't all that's around this area

"And then usually the oaks are kind of not as showy and that's just normal, and then hickories can be a good yellow color, so that's a good contrast between the reds and oranges of Sugar Maples and the yellows of the Hickories," Messbarger says.

Beautiful fall colored leaves starting to fill trees around northwest Missouri

The search for the next athletic director at Missouri Western State University has been paused, and will reopen early next year.

University president Elizabeth Kennedy said in a statement late Thursday afternoon, "After careful review and consideration of our three finalists who visited campus earlier this month, and after consultation with many people on campus and in the community, we are pausing the search and will reopen the position in January."

While all three candidates are highly qualified and capable people, none stood out as the right fit for Missouri Western at this time, and that needs to be our standard in all hiring decisions.”

The University named Franklin Pierce University athletic director Rachel Burleson, Illinois State associate A.D. of external affairs Dwight Merilatt and South Dakota School of Mines A.D. Joel Lueken as their three finalists.

Those three finalists all spoke to community members and Missouri Western supporters on the week of Oct. 11.

Theresa Grosbach, who has served as interim A.D. since September, will remain in that role. The previous A.D., Josh Looney, left Missouri Western after four years in late August to take the same job at Division I North Alabama.&nbsp;

Missouri Western pauses athletic director search, will seek new candidates in January

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Just before 6:30a.m. Wednesday police responded to the area of the Oak Hill Cemetery in the 200 block North 17th street in Atchison to investigate a suspicious person with a gun, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers located 26-year-old Chad M. Gorrell, Atchison,&nbsp; who was in possession of a firearm. Officers took him into custody on a requested charge of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He has previous convictions for burglary, obstruction, interference with law enforcement and criminal damage to property, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; He had been out of prison since 2019.

Police: Kan. felon was wandering near cemetery with a gun

GENTRY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 9a.m. Thursday in Gentry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Randy G. Gillispie, 58, Stanberry, was southbound on Route H three miles west of Darlington.&nbsp;

The pickup crossed the center of the road and struck a northbound 2008 Chevy Impala driven by Stephanie A. Deen, 50, Albany, head-on.

Grand River ambulance transported Deen and a passenger in the Chevy&nbsp; identified as Sherry D. Kelso, 50, Darlington, to Mosaic in Albany. Gillispie was not injured and not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

GENTRY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 9a.m. Thursday in Gentry County.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford F150 driven by Randy G. Gillispie, 58, Stanberry, was southbound on Route H three miles west of Darlington.&nbsp;The pickup crossed the center of the road and struck a northbound 2008 Chevy Impala driven by Stephanie A. Deen, 50, Albany, head-on.Grand River ambulance transported Deen and a passenger in the Chevy&nbsp; identified as Sherry D. Kelso, 50, Darlington, to Mosaic in Albany. Gillispie was not injured and not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says his deputies will be
out in force Halloween night, making sure registered sex offenders are not
giving out candy to kids.

Puett says about 15 teams of two will be knocking on the doors
of sex offenders to check for compliance with the law.

“We want to make sure that everybody is being compliant with
the law, make sure the community is safe,” Puett says. “So, we do that and we’ll
bring in a bunch of people on overtime. We’ll have partnerships with the (U.S.)
Marshal service. The Marshal service will send a couple of folks up.”

Registered sex offenders cannot participate in the tradition
of giving out candy to children Halloween night. In fact, they are required to
turn their lights off and post notice that they will not be giving out candy.

Buchanan County has approximately 300 registered sex
offenders.

Puett says usually his deputies find very few violations.

“Sometimes it’s minor violations. Sometimes it’s pretty
significant, which would mean that the officers that are checking the location
would then take that person into custody and make the case for violating the issues
of the Halloween provisions,” according to Puett.

Puett says his deputies will check each house once and then
likely will return to make sure they are not participating in trick or
treating.

Puett says sex offenders might complain, but they will comply.

“Lots of sex offenders are upset by the law, they don’t like
it,” Puett says. “However, it’s the law and we’re going to enforce that.”

Specialty Industries of St. Joseph has been providing meaningful employment to people with a disability for more than 50 years.

CEO Byron Myers says that for some of their employees, working in a competitive employment job is difficult, and one of the company's goals is to help them develop skills to be able to move into the competitive workplace.

 "For example, learning how to manage the transit system to get to and from work everyday, learning how to pack and bring a lunch with you everyday, or learning how to get along with coworkers or follow the directions of your supervisor," Myers tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Myers says that every employee with the company works to give back to the St. Joseph community. 

"We employ almost 130 folks, you know people who are living in the community, spending money in the community, going to social activities out in the community," Myers explains.

Myers says that while the overall goal of Specialty Industries is to provide meaningful employment, he says the broader vision is to provide a healthier quality of life.

"I think of that as improving their quality of life, and one way we can do that is by providing them a job where they're earning money," Myers says. "So they have more income in their pocket, they can buy healthier food items, they can go do fun social activities."

Along with celebrating its employees, Specialty Industries also opened a fully remodeled break room this week, featuring a special Chiefs mural designed by artist Chris Fleck.

The company this week celebrated all its employees and the work they have done over the years.

Myers says that the celebration this week was a part of National Disabled Employees Awareness month.

 "And that's a broader thing, just to you know, make sure the community is aware that just because a person has a disability does not mean that they can't be an important and contributing part of our community," Myers proudly says. "You know there's a lot of work that gets done here by our folks that they should be very, very proud of."

Specialty Industries works with many local companies, such as Nestle and Hillyards, as well as companies around the world to package goods.

Specialty Industries honors employees as part of National Disabled Employee Awareness month

OSAGE COUNTY&nbsp; – Law enforcement authorities are conducting an investigation regarding the online solicitation of a child by an adult.

On October 26, Osage County Investigators and Jefferson County Deputies arrested Marcus L. Smith, 39, of Effingham, in Ozawkie on an Osage County arrest warrant, according to Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells.

Smith was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he was held on the warrant.

On Wednesday, Osage County deputies transported Smith to the Osage County Jail Facility where he is being held on requested charges of electronic solicitation and indecent solicitation of a minor.

Sheriff: Atchison Co. man accused of online child sex crime

BUCHANAN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a vehicle theft.

On October 23, a&nbsp;1991 Chevrolet pick up truck was reported stolen from the 1000 block South 6th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Authorities recovered the pickup in rural Buchanan County Missouri on Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp; Police have not reported an arrest.

Pickup stolen in Kansas recovered in rural Buchanan County

A man was wounded and a juvenile taken into custody after a
stabbing late last night in St. Joseph.

St. Joseph police report Buchanan County EMS rushed the victim

non-life-threatening wound. Police say the stabbing occurred at a residence on

Just before 6:30p.m. Tuesday, police&nbsp; responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 900 block South 4th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

 During the disturbance a 51 year old man who resides at the complex was threatened with a hammer. 

Police took 33-year-old Jeffery Walker of Atchison into custody at his apartment in the complex. He is being held on a requested charge of aggravated assault, according to Wilson. There were no injuries.

Walker has a previous convictions involving drugs, according to online jail records.

St. Joseph city council members have approved a resolution
calling on the city to reduce greenhouse emissions and encourage others to do
likewise.

St. Joseph City Manager Bryan Carter says the first part of
the resolution calls on the city to pursue cost-effective measures to reduce
the city carbon footprint.

“So, on that side, we’ll be looking to identify ways that we
can have that incremental impact without incurring a level of expense that,
frankly, we just don’t have the funding to support right now,” Carter says.

The resolution also calls on city government to lobby for businesses
and groups to switch to more environmentally friendly energy sources.

“That really kind of gets the conversation going; just puts it
in mind of something we start to think about,” Carter says.

Carter says City Hall has already implemented some cost-saving
measures, such as switching to LED lights and installing low-flow water
faucets. Carter says the steps aren’t just about being green. They also save
the city money.

The city council adopted the recommendations of an advisory
committee to take steps to reduce the overall greenhouse emissions.

Carter says he plans to take the simply steps first.

“There are always different levels of effort you can take and
some of them are pretty easy,” says Carter. “It’s just adding maybe an
evaluation criteria or something of that nature. Then, of course, you have the
extreme which would be maybe go through and completely rehab a building to make
it more energy efficient. Obviously, that takes a lot of years of planning to
get to the point to have the financial ability to do that.”

Carter notes the city has been involved in turning the methane
from the city landfill into energy for the past 10 years.

St. Joseph City Hall makes steps to be more green

GOWER - A series of shootings at a Catholic abbey near Gower has prompted the sisters who live there to take action for their own safety.

Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, located about six miles northeast of Gower, has been the target in a series of shooting incidents - the first occurring in July 2019, and the most recent on March 24 of this year. Nobody was injured in the shootings.

"As it continued happening, especially with three incidents happening in close succession in March, that's when we realized it was deliberate and we were going to have to do something."

The most recent shooting incident in late March resulted in a bullet piercing the wall of Mother Abbess Cecelia's bedroom - about five feet from her bed. The bullet had already gone through the exterior siding.

"It penetrated that and went through Mother Abbess' exterior wall into an interior wall," said Sister Scholastica Radel, the prioress of the abbey.

 "It actually was at such an angle that it was stopped by a shower wall between us. The police said it was a very serious weapon that was being used."

There was also a shooting on February 17, which was Ash Wednesday, and then another just a few days after that.

Bullets and casings were later discovered on the property following the most recent shooting in March. The Clinton County Sherriff's Department has been in constant contact with the Abbey, but so far, there are no suspects.

"A lot of people are very anxious that we catch whoever did it, but on the other hand, we understand the police are doing their best and there's very little to go on."

Clinton County Sheriff's deputies have provided extra surveillance for the area, and they ask anyone in the community who has information to call their tip line at 816-539-2156.

Beyond that, the sisters knew they had to do something more for their own protection. As a result, an eight-foot high wall is being constructed along the northside of the property - the side where the shots came from.

"It's in the process of going up," Radel said. "There's already a great sense of security, especially in the night. Just to know there's that extra protection and less visibility."

The wall will span about 3,000 feet in length and also cover part of the property on the east side. Construction on the wall began this past week. The project is being funded through donations from the local community and other Benedictines of Mary benefactors.

"We were just so very touched by everybody's generosity," Sr. Radel said. "You really had a beautiful sense of community, especially from our locals as well. Just seeing how many people were coming forward and just the charity in their hearts, it was a beautiful thing. Very encouraging for us."

The contractor who's building the fence, Straub Construction, was also concerned for the sister's safety when they first heard about the shooting incidents. They're also the same company who built the Abbey in the first place.

"Not only have they been great work with, but they also are keeping an eye out for us," Radel said. "They were one of the first people to reach out to us after the shooting incidents occurred, and asked if there was anything they could do for us."

Sr. Radel says there's been a series of incidents occurring on or near their property over the last decade.&nbsp;There was a shooting incident there back in 2010, before the sisters moved to the property. That time, someone shot at a shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, shooting a life-size statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the waist.

In a statement to supporters earlier this year, the Benedictines of Mary said of the shooting in late March, "Some of the Sisters arose, but soon returned to sleep, as we have sadly become desensitized on account of many incidents of inappropriate activity around our monastery.”

As scary as these incidents are, Sr. Radel and the 44 other sisters who live on the property are grateful to the community for their generosity in donating money toward the wall project. They're also grateful to local law enforcement, who continue to investigate.

They're also relieved, and hopeful, that this will be the end of any violence aimed at them.

"We have a very sacred space here that needs protection," Sr. Radel said. "The message is kind of going two ways. (The wall) is a security for us, but it's also telling everyone else that this is a sacred space that needs protection."
