BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend manhunt in northeast Kansas.

Just after noon on Sept. 5, a sheriff's&nbsp;deputy on routine patrol in the vicinity of U.S. 36&nbsp; near Bittersweet,&nbsp; was alerted of a stolen vehicle out of Wisconsin, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

The deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle and a short chase ensued.&nbsp; The vehicle traveled southout of Fairview and&nbsp; ended up in a soybean field just east of the Sac andFox Casino on Coyote between 130th and 140th Road.&nbsp;

 At this point the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle Dustin Hampton 40 of Prairie DuChein, Wisconsin, ran from the vehicle.&nbsp;

Several tracking dogs were brought in and located Hampton approximately 3/4 mile east of where his original location. No injuries were reported and once Hampton was located, he complied without incident.

The vehicle Hampton was driving, a 1983 Datsun pickup, had been reported stolen out of Rice, Wisconsin. Hampton is in custody on requested charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Damage to Property, Felony Flee to Elude and Obstruction.

With the tall crops the search was very difficult and without&nbsp; a joint effort that included a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter, other KHP troopers, Jackson County Sheriff deputies, Sabetha police, Hiawatha police, Horton police, Kickapoo and Sac and Fox police, Hiawatha Town and Country he may have eluded arrest.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Sheriff: Pickup theft suspect captured hiding in tall Kansas crops

A vehicle ran through the front of the Subway at&nbsp;6101 Lake Avenue, on the south side of Saint Joseph. Per Saint Joseph Police, the incident occurred at around 1:51 PM Monday, with the vehicle ending up halfway inside the restaurant.

SJPD added that two people were injured in the incident, with one taken to the hospital with reported minor injuries.

South Side Subway Crash

A longtime pool in St. Joseph will soon be demolished after approval by the St. Joseph City Council.  

City Council members approved the demolition of the slides and the lap pool on Noyes Boulevard at the site of the old Aquatic Park. 

District One Councilmember Madison Davis says the pools had caused many issues for city staff to fix, to where it became necessary. 

"If we're not going the route of repairing all of that and spending the large amount of money that we talked about for a pool that wouldn't be used but maybe three months out of the year, that we need to, alright now let's decide, let's pull it out, let's go ahead and finish the lazy river and the splash pad," Davis says on the KFEQmunnity show. 

The approval of the demolition was contingent on the council coming to an agreement with the YMCA to build an indoor pool at its site in the North Village Shoppes, which happened in May.  

Davis says the YMCA is still currently working on the pool and its design but says it will be a great amenity. 

"An opportunity to partner with private investors that said they wanted to be part of it as well as other public entities such as the county and trying to provide a high-level amenity for St. Joseph," Davis explains.  "An indoor pool that people can use year-round that will last for a while." 

The demolition at the Aquatic Park is to help focus on making the lazy river and splash pad fully functional without the slides and lap pool.

With new pool in future, City Council approves demolition of old pool utilities

Defense Department
officials have confirmed the remains of a young St. Joseph Army sergeant forced
to endure the Bataan Death March in World War II have been positively
identified.

The Defense POW/MIA
Accounting Agency reports 22-year-old U.S. Army Sgt. Simon Garelick, a member
of the Headquarters Company in the Philippines, was captured when Japanese
forces overran the Philippines, forcing the surrender of U.S. and Filipino
service members on the Bataan peninsula on April 9th, 1942.

Those captured in
Bataan were forced to march 65 miles under brutal conditions to the Cabanatuan POW
camp. More than 2,500 prisoners perished at the camp during the war. Prison
camp and other historical records report Garelick died November 4th
of 1942, and was buried along with other deceased prisoners in the local
Cabanatuan Camp Cemetery in Common Grave 707.

After the war,
American Graves Registration Service personnel exhumed those buried at the Cabanatuan
cemetery in an effort to identify their remains. In 1947, the AGRS succeeded in
identifying nine sets of remains from Common Grave 707, but declared the rest unidentifiable.
The unidentified remains were buried at the Manila American Cemetery and
Memorial as Unknowns.

Another attempt at
identification began in early 2019. DPAA exhumed the remains of seven Unknowns
associated with Common Grave707 and sent them to the DPAA laboratory for
analysis. DPAA scientists used dental and anthropological analysis along with circumstantial
evidence to identify Garelick’s remains.

Remains of St. Joseph WWII veteran involved in Bataan Death March identified

Around 11-Thousand
St. Joseph residents are being notified by the City of St. Joseph they might
have been impacted by a cyberattack against the city in early June.

The city has sent
out a news release stating those residents will receive letters regarding the incident
on June 9th that could have exposed their personal information.
Those residents will be offered free credit monitoring and identity theft
protection services. Resources will be provided to help protect sensitive information.

City officials
state there is no evidence that any information has been misused. It is
possible, though, that records from the St. Joseph police and health
departments could have been acquired by an unauthorized third party.

The news release
says employees in the Communications Center detected technical issues with the
city network at 2:30am on June 9th. The city IT department shut down
all locations as a precaution and began its investigation by six o’clock that
morning. Outside IT specialists were consulted. The city wiped and rebuilt
affected systems, but certain files might have been acquired without authorization.

“The city regrets
that this incident took place and is immediately taking steps to notify those
affected now that the investigation has been completed,” the news release
states.

The incident did
not affect police, fire, and emergency medical services due to long-standing
protocols and contingency planning. Workarounds kept city business running
within hours of the network disruption.

“I’m very proud of
the employees of the City of St. Joseph who performed exceedingly well in
handling this situation, just like those at so many businesses and government
entities, big and small, who have suffered from these types of incidents,” St.
Joseph City Manager Mike Schumacher said in a written statement released by the
city. “They made a negative experience for this organization the least
disruptive as possible.”

The City of St.
Joseph carries cybersecurity insurance. The St. Joseph City Council will review
an ordinance to authorize a $50,000 insurance deductible payment during its
September 29th meeting.

Thousands of St. Joseph residents might have been impacted by cyberattack on city

A 70-year-old St.
Joseph man has been found guilty of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.

The Buchanan
County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office reports it took a jury seated in Buchanan
County a little more than an hour to convict Russell Barbeau of first-degree
statutory sodomy.

A probable cause
statement submitted by the St. Joseph Police Department stated Barbeau sexually
abused the girl on January 21st of this year.

A sentencing
hearing has been scheduled for October 21st.

70-year-old St. Joseph man convicted of abusing 12-year-old

With a new leader at the helm, there seems to be a new energy in the St. Joseph School District with three weeks of the new school year already in the books.  

Superintendent Ashly McGinnis visited many of the schools back on the first day of school, and since then has seen a lot of good things happening in the district. 

"I think there's a lot of positive energy right now, not only in the buildings but also throughout our community, just all coming together to be one team and move our district forward and move Missouri Western forward as well," McGinnis tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. 

McGinnis took over as the Superintendent following the retirement of Gabe Edgar. And in her new role, McGinnis says she's feeling pretty good as well. 

"I feel energized, I just hope that can continue until February, right?" McGinnis jokes.  "I think I am grateful for our team, we have such a strong administrative team, we have strong teachers, and the people are always what fuel me to keep going, and so I'm very grateful for all the people we have at our St. Joseph School District." 

Already during her tenure, she's done some work, most recently signing an agreement with Missouri Western State University to make enrollment easier to the university for St. Joseph students

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY —The search for a a driver and vehicle after a pursuit in Leavenworth County.

Just after noon Sunday, Leavenworth County Sheriff Deputies attempted to stop a dark gray Jeep whose driver was identified as having a felony county warrant, according to a media release from the Basehor, Kansas Police Department.

The Jeep failed to stop which resulted in a pursuit.The pursuit entered Basehor on southbound 155th Street. Leavenworth Sheriff's Deputies requested Basehor Police assistance for the use of Stop Sticks. 

Basehor Police responded to 155th and Leavenworth Road. However, there was no opportunity to deploy the sticks. After a brief time in Basehor, the Jeep left Basehor northbound on 155th Street. 

Shortly after leaving Basehor, Sheriff Deputies lost sight of the Jeep. A black Dodge Challenger was reported to the sheriff's office associated with the Jeep. The Challenger was located by Kansas Highway Patrol at 155th Street and Parallel Road and was disabled at 155th Street and Chestnut by KHP which used their grappler technology. 

The driver was found to be associated with the suspect in the Jeep. The driver was interviewed by deputies. The driver was not injured and there was no reported damage to the car. The Challenger was not involved in the initial pursuit and the driver was released by the sheriff after providing information about the suspect in the Jeep. 

Law enforement are still looking for the Jeep has not been located. No officer with the Basehor Police Department was involved in the pursuit other than providing traffic control after KHP disabled the Challenger.

ANDREW COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a 72-year-old St. Joseph man was southbound on State Route K one mile south of Amazonia.&nbsp; The motorcycle traveled off the west side of the road, struck a fallen tree, overturned and the driver was ejected.&nbsp;

Andrew County EMS transported the driver to Mosaic Life Care. He was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

The deputy made contact with the driver, 38-year-old&nbsp; Josiah Williams from Topeka. It was discovered that his drivers license had been revoked.&nbsp; 

The passenger of the vehicle 31-year-old Paige Keefe of Omaha had a $500 Failure to Appear Warrant out of Ford County Kansas.&nbsp; K-9 Carla alerted on the vehicle and cocaine, a scale, baggies and other items of interest were located and taken as evidence.&nbsp;

Three children were also present at the time of stop.

Williams was arrested on requested charges of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Distribution of a Stimulant, Possession of Stimulant, No Drug Tax Stamp, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Keefe was arrested on charges of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Possession of Stimulant and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

HARRISON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30a.m. Saturday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Kia Teluride driven by a 28-year-old Plattsmouth, Nebraska man was northbound on Route O ten miles north of Blythedale. The SUV was traveling too fast for conditions. The vehicle crossed the center of the road, traveled off the west side of the road, struck some trees and continued down an embankment.

North Missouri EMS transported the driver to Liberty Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Driver hospitalized after SUV strikes trees

<a href="https://www.kcur.org/halle-jackson"></a>An allergy to red meat caused by tick bites is on the rise in Kansas and Missouri, public health experts say.

It’s called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/29/lone-star-ticks-increase-climate-crisis" target="_blank">alpha-gal syndrome</a>, a condition that can develop after a bite from a lone star tick. Individuals with the disease can develop a variety of symptoms, including hives, nausea, shortness of breath or anaphylactic shock, two to six hours after eating red meat or other mammal products such as cow’s milk or gelatin.

Dr. Rex Archer, a professor of public health at Kansas City University and former director of the Kansas City Health Department, says the condition is on the rise as a result of climate change. Warmer summers allow tick populations in Kansas and Missouri to thrive.

However, reporting the condition to state and local health officials in Kansas and Missouri isn’t mandatory, which makes it hard to know exactly how many people are impacted.

“This is an extremely underreported disease because, unfortunately, it's not yet mandated by CDC to be reported by states,” Archer told KCUR’s Up To Date. “And many of the states that have the highest prevalence of the tick that can cause or spread this disease are not reporting it or mandating it.”

In Missouri, MU Extension is working to develop education and resources for people with alpha-gal syndrome. The group is currently&nbsp;<a href="https://extension.missouri.edu/news/mu-extension-wants-your-input-on-alpha-gal-syndrome" target="_blank">conducting a survey</a>&nbsp;of people about their experiences.

In Kansas, Missouri, red meat allergies caused by tick bites on rise

This weekend the Pony Express Museum will offer free admission for one day during museum day, with some special history reenactments as well.  

Museum Day will be tomorrow (Sat.) with free admission to the Pony Express Musuem during its normal hours from 9am to 5pm.  History re-enactors will be presenting at the museum from 10am to 4pm.  Re-enactors will also visit the Pony School from 10am to noon, and noon to 2pm. 

On top of that, during the free admission day, the museum encourages everyone to come and see the Native American display, mini quilt arrangement in the children’s play area along with the new animal display. The Hall of Riders also has a new rider James “Bean” Hamilton for people to learn his history. 

Once again, root beer floats and sandwiches from Marek’s will be available at Dick and Mignon’s Soda Shop or the Goetz Museum.  Sample root beer floats will be free, or you can buy a souvenir mug for $20

Explore the Pony Express Museum for free on Free Museum Day

During the month of September, the St. Joseph Public Library is encouraging you to get out to the library and sign up for a library card.  

September is library card sign up month and the theme this year at the St. Joseph Public Library is "One Card, Endless Possibilities". 

Director Mary Beth Revels says sometimes people might not realize everything the library can offer 

"Sure, we offer books, we offer movies, we offer free Wi-fi, we have computers," Revels tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "We offer printers, a lot of times people just need something to print and you can come to the library and print it, we also offer all kind of informational databases from genealogy research to homework help and lots of free programs at the library." 

Revels says even in this sort of digital age we are in, the value of libraries continues to grow, because not everyone can afford an Audible subscription. 

"You can come to the library and you can get James Patterson's latest book as a print book, we can get that for you as a large print book, you can get that as an E audio book, you can check it out through the library and listen to it on your phone," Revels explains.  "You can also check it out as an E book." 

Revels says even in the digital age when you can read a book in so many different formats, you can get those at the library, but still more physical books are checked out than digital books. 

Revels says a library card offers so many services to people, including some people might not know about, like available E-content 

"We offer Hoopla, Libby, Boundless, Blackstone Audio, those are all different apps that you can download and use your library card to check out E Books and E Audio Books, sometimes music, sometimes magazines depending on the different app," Revels says.  "Sometimes movies, we check out streaming movies through Kanopy." 

During the month the library is offering prizes to anyone who uses their library card.  You can enter prize drawings at any of the four St. Joseph Public Library locations.  

Also, during the month, the fee to sign up for a library card or replace a lost card will be waived.

Retailers in others states have offered steep discounts that threaten market stability, analysts explained at the MJ Unpacked cannabis conference in St. Louis.

More people are heading to Missouri’s dispensaries to buy cannabis products — and spending more money when they go, according to industry experts who spoke Thursday at the MJ Unpacked cannabis conference in St. Louis.

While dispensaries in other states are offering steep discounts to try and attract customers, Missouri’s prices have remained steady.&nbsp;

“Missouri is viewed as a stronger market than others,” said Kris Walker,&nbsp;president and chief commercial officer at Hoodie Analytics, during a panel discussion on retail data analysis.&nbsp;“There are things happening in Missouri that are causing consumers to not just be shopping on price. When you’re only shopping on price, it becomes a race to the bottom.”

Samuel Soong, chief revenue officer at Grön cannabis edible brand, called Missouri customers “very savvy.”&nbsp;

“They know what they want,” he said. “They’re expecting a lot of value in their purchasing.”

The numbers agree. When the average shopper goes to a Missouri dispensary, they end up spending about $65, with the average price per item being $24.60, according to data compiled by Hoodie. That’s above the national average of $61 and $18.41.&nbsp;

In Colorado and New Mexico, the average item price is about $11.&nbsp;

The most popular item in Missouri is still traditional marijuana buds, or what the industry simply calls “flower.” However, the item that’s seen the most growth in the last year — both in Missouri and nationwide — is pre-rolled joints.&nbsp;

A year ago, 48% of every transaction included flower, and today it’s 43%. Walker said that’s largely due to customers buying more pre-rolled joints, which are often infused with concentrated cannabis oil.&nbsp;They’re designed for people who want a more potent and longer-lasting high than what traditional flower offers.&nbsp;

“It’s a convenient form factor,” said Krista Raymer, chief strategy officer at C3 Industries that operates High Profile cannabis dispensaries. “It’s great for the customer.”

Raymer said in some other states, the growth of pre-rolled joints has brought challenges because it meant that customers are spending less.

“Fundamentally, they are purchasing less brands per transaction,” she said. “Missouri pre-roll prices are holding a little bit differently than maybe what we’ve seen in other markets, but it is something that we pay attention to, a lot.”

Throughout the country, Missouri is still considered a “shining star,” Walker said.&nbsp;

John Mueller, co-founder and CEO at Greenlight, believes the regulatory environment is a big part of the state’s success, particularly because the industry was able to write its own laws.

“If you can write your own rules and ballot initiative and it’s in the constitution, that’s like your best line of defense,” Mueller said.&nbsp;

Every year, industry lobbyists work to kill any legislation that attempts to “control our business,” he said.&nbsp;

“Just let us do business, stay out of our way, we keep paying the veterans, everything’s good here,” Mueller said. “I go around talking in the other states we operate, I think we’ve set a gold standard here.”

He also points to the limited number of licenses.&nbsp;

“Limited licenses is the whole key to any market,” he said. “We won’t go into a market unless there’s a set number.”&nbsp;

Walker said that Missouri also has “disciplined operators.”&nbsp;

“If you’ve got a discipline operator who knows they’re running a business for profit and growth and long-term brand building, you make different decisions than, ‘Oh my God, the guy across the street just dropped his price by 30%. I should do it too,’” he said. “That is an undisciplined choice that unfortunately has very significant consequences.”

Missouri cannabis sales remain steady as new products emerge

Purina and River Bluff Brewing in St. Joseph are once again teaming up to host the Raise a Pint for Pets Tailgate Party, this evening in downtown St. Joseph. 

The event at River Bluff Brewing will help benefit the St. Joseph Friends of the Animal Shelter.  Pets are welcome at the event which runs from 4 to 6:30 pm this evening at the brewery. 

The event will feature adoptable pets and Purina will cover the adoption fees of the first 10 adopted pets.  Also the winner of a raffle for a Kansas City Chiefs bundle, that includes four tickets and parking passes among other item to the Chiefs and Eagles game will be announced.  

River Bluff will once again offer their Arrowhead Red on tap, and one dollar from every draft pour sold will be donated by both Purina and River Bluff Brewing to benefit Friends of the Animal Shelter.

Mo. teen hospitalized after car strikes a deer

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement continue to search for a suspect wanted for criminal activity in northeast Kansas.

Just before 1a.m. Sept. 1, a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop&nbsp; in the vicinity of U.S. 36 Highway and Hopi Drive in Hiawatha, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

 The passenger of the vehicle, Joshua Heideman from the traffic stop. Deputies arrested the driver 65-year-old Leonard Bindel of Hiawatha on requested&nbsp; charges of Flee and Attempt to Elude and Drive While License Cancelled, Suspended or Revoked.

Heideman is described as a 38-year-old  white male,  6-foot tall and he weighs approximately 230 pounds.&nbsp; He is wanted for a variety of criminal activity in Brown and Jackson County, accoring to Merchant.
