As the Missouri legislative session begins today at noon, a Republican senator has introduced bills aimed at the Kansas City Chiefs and their impending move to Kansas.

Senator Nick Schroer has introduced three bills targeting the Chiefs after the team announced plans to build a new stadium in Kansas, as well as a new practice facility and a new team headquarters based in Olathe.&nbsp; If lawmakers feel snubbed, after approving a package during a special session in June, the three bills could make it to the floor during the session.

One bill would impose a $50 surcharge on each ticket sold for events hosted by the Chiefs and a 5 % surcharge on sales made within the sports facility during those events.&nbsp; Another would make any lessee of a public facility with a capacity of 60,000 or more liable for the reasonable costs of demolishing the existing facility if it is not left in a condition that is usable for another purpose when the lease ends.

The final bill being introduced from Schroer would deny any professional sports team playing in a facility with a capacity of at least 75,000 people the ability to receive tax credits.&nbsp; It is not known if all three bills will be heard, or debated, during the legislative session.

Despite efforts to keep the team in Missouri, the Chiefs confirmed their move to Kansas City, Kansas for a $3 billion state-of-the-art facility by 2031.&nbsp; The proposed legislation could impact the Chiefs' plans for a new stadium and mixed-use entertainment district.

 The proposed bill would raise fines to $500 for first-time offenders, allow for license suspension, and add points to driving records. The legislation aims to address the growing problem of drivers passing stopped school buses with extended stop-arms and flashing lights, with the hope of deterring such dangerous behavior. 

The director of transportation for Platte County R-3 Schools supports the increased penalties as a necessary deterrent, emphasizing the importance of education and awareness in preventing such violations. The bill is expected to gain traction as the legislative session progresses.

The legislative session began Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Jefferson City.

New legislation aims to crack down on stop-arm violations to protect Missouri students

Brian Helm, of St. Joseph, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison following a guilty plea for the November 2024 murder of Dustin Allen Graham. 

During a planned robbery, Helm reportedly used his vehicle to block Graham in a parking lot, smashed Graham's window, and fired a fatal shot before fleeing the scene. Helm, who was a fugitive with an active parole violation at the time, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

His sentences—25 years for murder and three years for the weapons charge—will run consecutively. His co-defendant, Melanie Myers, admitted to her role in arranging the fatal meeting and pleaded guilty to first-degree armed robbery in April 2025.

Helm Sentenced to 28 Years in 2024 Homicide Case

Missouri Western State University will host the annual Super Science Saturday on Feb. 7, offering a day of hands-on exploration designed to inspire a lifelong interest in science and math. 

The event will run from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Remington/Agenstein Hall.

Super Science Saturday is presented by the St. Joseph Museums and Missouri Western. The program features interactive STEM adventures, live demonstrations, and experiments for all ages. Participants include university departments, local high schools, and area businesses.

This year's event includes a Math Maze, presented by MWSU, where kids and adults can test their logic and problem-solving skills. There will also be sensory perception challenges, presented by the Psychology Dept.

Reptiles and amphibians will be featured, courtesy of Remington Nature Center in partnership with MWSU Biology Dept.&nbsp;

Fire and ice demonstrations will take place throughout the day, presented by the Chemistry Dept.

The event honors the heritage of the St. Joseph Museums, which began more than 90 years ago as a children’s museum founded by the St. Joseph Junior College. Under the leadership of Miss Orrel Andrews, the museum’s first director, the institution established a mission of youth education that the current festival continues by connecting students with professional scientists and innovators.

Super Science Saturday takes place at Remington/Agenstein Hall on the MWSU campus in St. Joseph.

Admission is $5 for adults and students. Children 5 and under are free.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Tuesday in Livingston County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Hyundai Tucson driven by a 19-year-old Bethany woman was eastbound on MO 190 at Route U two miles east of Lock Springs. The SUV traveled off the north side of the road, struck a tree, became airborne, continued across a creek, struck the embankment and rolled.

Livingston County EMS transported the driver and a 1-year-old male passenger in Hedrick Medical Center. Both were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Mo. woman, 1-year-old hospitalized after violent SUV crash

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 5:30p.m. January 4, a sheriff's&nbsp;deputy on routine patrol stopped a vehicle for speeding 101 mph in a 65 mph zone in the vicinity of U.S. 75 and&nbsp; 160th, according to Brown County Sheriff&nbsp; John Merchant.

While making contact with the driver&nbsp; of the vehicle identified as 71-year-old Clarence Riley of Minot, North&nbsp; Dakota, an odor of burnt marijuana was detected&nbsp; coming from the vehicle.&nbsp; 

The deputy arrested Riley on requested charges ofPossession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and No Drug Tax Stamp.

Sheriff: Driver was transporting cocaine at 101mph on Kan. highway

The Missouri Department of Revenue has issued an advisory to correct inaccurate reports circulating through some media outlets regarding changes to state vehicle registration requirements.

The department noted the misinformation — which claims that Missouri no longer requires vehicle inspections and has expanded registration periods as of Jan. 1, 2026 — was likely generated by artificial intelligence sources.

State officials confirmed that Missouri law has not changed. Vehicle registration and safety inspection requirements remain the same.

While the department acknowledged that similar proposals have been introduced in recent legislative sessions, none have been signed into law.

For official information regarding vehicle licensing, residents should visit the Department of Revenue’s website.

Area residents have the chance to join an immersive two-day journey on April 21 and 22, 2026, to explore the enduring legacy of Waylande Gregory. 

Known&nbsp;for his contributions to St. Joseph’s City Hall and the Missouri Theater, Gregory was a preeminent American ceramic sculptor of the 1930s, famously erasing the boundary between fine art and decorative craft.

The excursion, organized by the Centennial Celebration Series Committee of The Friends of the Missouri Theater, serves as a grand prelude to the 100th anniversary of St. Joseph's most iconic landmarks in 2027.

The journey begins in Kansas City at the historic Hotel President. Built in 1926, this landmark features the intricate plasterwork of a then-21-year-old Gregory, including his crowning achievement: the&nbsp;Aztec Room. 

Film buffs may recognize the hotel from the 1990 classic Mr. &amp; Mrs. Bridge. We will also view the nearby Midland Theater, a 1927 structure designed by the Boller Brothers, the same architects responsible for the Missouri Theater in St. Joseph.

After a morning of architectural discovery, you can enjoy a buffet lunch at the historic Freight House at Jack Stack BBQ in the Crossroads Art District, followed by a curator-guided tour of the Nerman Museum of Art to view Gregory’s sketches, sculptures, and his famous "Fountain of the Atom" mannequin.

You can then travel to Lawrence, KS, for an evening of shopping and fine dining before checking into the grand Oread Hotel. After an included breakfast the following morning, you can explore Strong Hall to view Gregory’s decorative work before taking a scenic drive through the rolling Flint Hills. The midday destination is Alma, Kansas, where participants can dine at the Brandt House, an 1887 limestone hotel recently renovated in 2024.

The final leg of the tour takes goes through Manhattan, KS, for a guided tour of the Mariana Kistler Beach Museum. Here, you can view several Waylande Gregory pieces, including his rare 1939 terra-cotta relief entitled “R.F.D.” To conclude the experience, a visit will take place at the 1885 Columbian Theater and the Oz Museum in Wamego, finishing the trip with a celebratory dinner at Barleycorn’s Downtown Deli.

The Waylande Gregory Legacy: A Centennial Celebration Tour

Students in the St. Joseph school district are back in the classroom today after Christmas break, ready to tackle the second half of the school year.  

Assistant Superintendent of Academics Stacia Studer says the district has been riding the momentum in the first semester off higher scores on its annual performance report.  

Studer says she was also grateful for new tools and practices to help provide high quality educators and high-quality resources for students 

“We have led a core resource int the English language classrooms in K through six, so that has been a big initiative for our teachers, our elementary teachers in particularly,” Studer says on the KFEQmunnity show.  “And then at the secondary level, we have led a high-quality instructional resource with the science, ensuring those high curricular materials at the center.” 

Studer says it's about ensuring classroom instruction is on grade level, even changing assessment practices 

“We are not being complacent, we are moving and innovating in our work in academics,” Studer explains.  “And so, they had assessment practices where we assign a district level assessment, that’s written on grade level, that helps our educators to see the questions that students are being asked on grade level.” 

Students wrapped up the first half of the semester by taking that district level assessment test at each grade level, and to start the second half its time to figure out how they did.  

Studer says the district is ensuring all teachers will share those results to start the second semester 

“Imagine if you went to take a driver's license test, and then you didn’t know how you did on that driver's license test, you just showed up and you're like ok I don’t know if I passed or failed,” Studer says.  “It’s ensuring that our students know, and they’re able to set goals, and that educators can help them reach their goals and that’s the key piece right now.” 

Studer says in the mid-year she is focused on making sure students are aware of the results and their goals, and that educators are receiving coaching conversations to help lead students in their goals.

NCMC spring semester begins Jan. 12

A Lathrop man is facing drug charges in Clinton County for allegedly selling methamphetamine to an informant working with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. 

Robert Christopher Cox is charged with two counts of delivery of a controlled substance, with the first purchase taking place at his residence in July and the second in August. 

The informant reportedly bought 24 grams for $275 in July and returned in August to purchase an ounce of methamphetamine for $300. 

No court dates have been scheduled at this time.

Lathrop man faces drug charges in Clinton County

Missouri Western State University has launched a regional Small Business Development Center to support small-business growth across northwest Missouri.

The university received a contract from the Small Business Administration to provide SBDC services to the region. Rebecca Lobina, Missouri Western’s director of workforce development, will lead the center.

The center will also offer students and faculty increased access to real-world learning opportunities.

Funded by the SBA with local matching funds, SBDCs provide free counseling and training to businesses with fewer than 500 employees. These services support both startups and the expansion of existing companies.

The center will work alongside the university's Craig School of Business, the Center for Workforce Development, and the Houlne Center for Convergent Technology to bolster the region’s economy.

Lobina, who joined the university in April, previously led the regional SBDC for nearly 20 years. She said she expects high demand for the center's services, which cover everything from initial business concepts to succession planning.

"St. Joseph and northwest Missouri has an active entrepreneurship community, and that community is hungry for the services that a local SBDC provides," Lobina said. She noted that the center has historically served up to 200 businesses annually. Services began Jan. 1.

A runaway juvenile from Elwood, KS has been confirmed alive.

The Elwood Police Department says Lynnaya Bullen was reported missing Dec. 30, 2025.

As of Jan. 5, law enforcement had received information confirming Bullen is alive, and officers are continuing to follow up on leads.

Due to the nature of the investigation and the age of the individual, no further information is being released. Anyone with credible information regarding the case is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.

Investigation continues into missing Elwood juvenile

On December 26, the Brown County Sheriff's Office, following up on an investigation, applied for and was granted a search warrant for a residence at 811 Cherokee in Hiawatha, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

At the conclusion of the warrant,&nbsp; deputies arrested 67-year-old Doug Tollefson on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession ofMarijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.&nbsp; Hiawatha Police assisted with the arrest.&nbsp;

Deputies found meth and marijuana at Kansas man's home

Community Missions, the City of St. Joseph, and the St. Joseph Police Department are launching a coordinated effort to address unsheltered homelessness by prioritizing health, safety, and access to supportive services.

Officials emphasized that the initiative focuses on connecting individuals in outdoor encampments to safer alternatives rather than punishment or displacement. A 24-hour shelter is available to provide area residents with a secure place to rest, partake of basic necessities, and direct links to social services.

Rachael Martin, executive director of Community Missions says, "The 24-hour shelter only opened back in July. We've seen over 400 individuals come through the shelter, and currently we've identified 84 camps throughout the community. Some you can see and some you cannot."

The 24-hour shelter provides services to men and women. Martin emphasizes that to stay at the shelter, individuals must be at least 18-years old.

To ensure a "care-centered" approach, outreach teams will engage with individuals at encampment sites multiple times before any clearing begins. The city says each person will receive at least three separate contacts and ample notice of upcoming changes. During these interactions, service partners will offer individualized assistance and answer questions to ensure no one is left without options.

St. Joseph City Manager, Mike Schumacher, says, "By all of us working together, we'll be able to make a difference for the folks living in the elements. There have been health challenges with the cold. We feel its time to reach out and give folks the help they need."

Organizers noted that while encampments can pose health and safety risks to residents, neighbors, and first responders, the goal is to reduce those risks while treating everyone with dignity and compassion.

Martin says, "We are really happy to have the city, the police department, and other community members and organizations actually coming together."

Under the partnership, Community Missions and other service organizations lead the outreach and engagement efforts. The St. Joseph Police Department’s role is limited to safety and coordination, supporting a service-led strategy.

City leaders acknowledged that homelessness is a complex issue requiring long-term solutions. This collaboration represents a continued commitment to expanding access to permanent housing, behavioral health support, and community partnerships.

Schumacher adds, "In reality, this will be an ongoing effort, and the collaboration between us and private partners is key to its success."

Community Missions and city agencies unite to expand support for unsheltered residents

According to preliminary statistics from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, five people were killed in traffic crashes over the 2026 New Year’s holiday counting period.

The counting period began at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31 and concluded at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4.

Troopers reported a total of 187 traffic crashes, resulting in 87 injuries and five fatalities. Additionally, the patrol made 112 arrests for driving while intoxicated.

There were no boating crashes or drownings reported during the holiday.

The 2026 death toll marks an increase from the previous year’s holiday. During the 2024-2025 New Year’s counting period, one person was killed and 118 were injured in 264 traffic crashes.

While the total number of crashes decreased this year, the number of fatalities rose.

MSHP: 5 killed in New Year’s traffic crashes

First responder agencies have until the end of next month to nominate heroic responders for the Missouri Public Safety Awards

The Department of Public Safety is accepting nominations for the State of Missouri’s highest awards honoring first responders who took heroic actions beyond the call of duty in 2025 until February 28th. 

The awards are the Red, White and Blue Heart Award, Missouri Medal of Valor, and Governor’s Medal. The department is also accepting nominations from Missouri public safety agencies for the Public Safety Civilian Partnership Award.  The awards will be presented during a statewide ceremony in Jefferson City later this year.

Nominations must come from the leader of the public safety agency.  Nomination forms can be found on the Department of Public Safety's website.  A  public safety officer is defined as a person serving a public agency, with or without compensation, such as a firefighter, law enforcement officer, or emergency personnel or emergency management personnel.

The four public awards that someone can be nominated for are:&nbsp;

The Red, White and Blue Heart Award may be presented to any Missouri peace officer, firefighter, paramedic, EMT or emergency first responder who under honorable circumstances is critically, seriously or fatally injured while performing official duties in the line of duty. It is conferred in recognition of first responders seriously injured and sustaining permanent impairment of health or death. The injury or condition must require long-term treatment by a medical professional and considerable loss of time from duty. In a fatality incident, the award will be presented to a family member.

The Missouri Medal of Valor recognizes heroic service by first responders in an effort to save a life. The Medal of Valor is Missouri’s highest award for public safety officers and is awarded to those who exhibit exceptional courage, decisiveness and swift action without regard for their own safety in their attempt to save a life. Law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services, state and local corrections officers, court officers and emergency management personnel are eligible.

The Governor’s Medal recognizes extraordinary actions by an organized or ad hoc team of first responders for brave actions above and beyond the call of normal duty during a critical situation in which their teamwork was essential to the successful resolution of the situation. Law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services, state and local corrections officers, court officers and emergency management personnel are eligible.

The Public Safety Civilian Partnership Award honors a civilian who has provided valuable or courageous assistance to first responders in an emergency situation, without regard for their own personal welfare. It may also be bestowed on a civilian or team of civilians who train public safety officers in life-saving techniques which are later utilized to save a life

The Platte County Commission has voted&nbsp; to withdraw from any involvement in financing of the Zona Rosa shopping district after a vote on Monday. 

 The county government won a lawsuit previously that confirmed that it was not obligated to pay shortfalls in sales taxes used to repay bonds.  

"With today's agreement, the county government will withdraw completely from public financing of Zona Rosa," said County Commissioner Joe Vanover in a news release.  "The bank, the developer, and all parties agree that the county government did not default on the Zona Rosa bonds,"

Bondholder trustee UMB Bank and the present developer of Zona Rosa are suing each other over the repayment of bonds and maintenance of three parking garages within the shopping complex.  In early 2025, they issued a notice that they wanted to settle their lawsuits by extending the special sales tax for Zona Rosa.  Platte County intervened in the lawsuit with the help of attorney Todd Graves.

"For the last few months, we have been negotiating a way for the county government to get out of the public financing of Zona Rosa completely," Vanover said. 

 The settlement agreement says, "The Parties acknowledge that the County is not and has never been in default on any obligations related to Series 2003 Bonds, Series 2007 Bonds, or any agreement named in the County Complaint, Settlement Agreement, or this Addendum to which the County was a party."

As part of the agreement, the county will transfer the parking garages to the transportation development districts in Zona Rosa.  The bank and developer agree Platte County can withdraw from the public financing scheme.

Platte County withdraws from financing of Zona Rosa

Work at Rosecrans Memorial Airport to continue improving the airport, which is also the home of the 139th Airlift Wing, which many of the improvements should aid.  

St. Joseph Public Works Director Abe Forney says a new air traffic control tower is not operational just yet, but is up at the airport that was needed by the 139th 

“So, it didn’t meet the security requirements that the 139th and the Air Force and the Air Guard needed, so security it upgraded that,” Forney explains on the KFEQmunnity show.  “And then the height requirement for the controllers to be able to see the air traffic in the area, so it needed to be higher and then it needed to be more secure, after September 11th everything changed security wise.” 

A new runway, and a new terminal have also been done at the airport.  Many of the improvements are aimed at assisting the 139th to be able to upgrade to the new "J" Model C-130. 

Forney though, says the upgrades have also had a massive impact on the city overall 

“The big businesses in town, the American Family Insurance or the Altecs or whoever, the big companies that utilize this city, utilize the airport too,” Forney says.  “So, more safer runways, safer air traffic control, is better for everybody that utilizes the airport.” 

Forney says these improvements are important because as cliche as it sounds, the airport is the gateway to the city 

“When these big corporations or the governor come to town, or any elected official, when they fly in it’s the first thing that they see, so first impressions last a long time as we all know,” Forney says.  “And when you come into a new modern facility, it gives the perception of what our city is, and it’s a great city so I want them to see a great airport before they come to a great town.” 

Forney does point out that the new tower is not yet operational, as it waits for equipment from the FAA.  The new runway has been completed, and the new terminal is currently operational as well.
