The St. Joseph Mustangs lost at Clarinda 1-0 Wednesday behind a complete-game shutout from A's pitcher Jay Kennedy.

The Mustangs managed six hits, but stranded nine total runners on base. Kennedy struck out seven Mustang batters and only walked one. Clarinda scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. St. Joseph had the tying run on base in the ninth, but were unable to score.

Ryker Curry tossed eight strong innings for St. Joseph, allowing just one earned run. He struck out seven and walked three.

 At 28-15 overall, the Mustangs are still in first place in the MINK League North Division.

The Mustangs have just four regular season games remaining. They’ll play at Chillicothe on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.

Clarinda tosses complete game shut out in win over Mustangs Wednesday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eduardo Rodriguez allowed two runs and four hits over seven dominant innings, Miguel Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run and the Detroit Tigers held on through a nervy ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Rodriguez (6-5) needed just 37 pitches to cut through the Kansas City lineup once, and the left-hander still had not allowed a hit until Matt Duffy's one-out single in the fifth. Rodriguez wound up striking out seven without allowing a walk.

Jason Foley worked the eighth for Detroit before Alex Lange ran into trouble closing things out.

He began by plunking Salvador Perez, bounced by to get pinch hitter Nicky Lopez to ground into a double play, then walked Michael Massey. Drew Waters followed with a sharp single that looked as if it might score the tying run, but third base coach Vance Wilson threw up the stop sign, leaving the Royals with runners on the corners and two outs.

Lange proceeded to strike out Kyle Isbel and finish off his 16th save.

Javier Baez homered and Kerry Carpenter also drove in a run for the Tigers, who had struggled to solve Ryan Yarbrough until the lanky Royals left-hander experienced some cramping in his hamstring with two outs in the sixth inning.

Yarbrough (2-5) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk.

The Tigers jumped ahead on Baez's solo shot in the second inning, his seventh of the year, and for a while it looked as if that might be enough. Rodriguez leaned on his fastball and cutter, along with an occasional changeup, to keep Kansas City guessing until Duffy finally delivered his single in the fifth inning.

Massey followed with a tying double down the right-field line. And after Waters grounded out, Isbel added an RBI double to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead — and leave Rodriguez slapping his glove in frustration.

Yarbrough and the Royals bullpen gave it right back, though

The Tigers had pulled even again in the sixth on Carpenter's single when Yarbrough — who missed 55 games this season with head fractures from a line drive — began to cramp. He was checked on by the Kansas City training staff and threw one warm-up pitch before departing, and Hernandez proceeded to walk Baez before Cabrera's single put Detroit ahead for good.

Royals: Perez was back in the lineup after missing a couple of starts with a left hamstring strain. “Everything is good,” manager Matt Quatraro said, “just don't look for him to score from first or anything.”

Royals LHP Daniel Lynch went on the injured list with a shoulder strain and reliever Austin Cox recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take his place. Lynch experienced a dip in volocity before the All-Star break and it was still there during his start Tuesday night, so the Royals decided to give him a rest. They hope Lynch is back as soon as he is eligible.

Cabrera, who is retiring after this season, was honored by the Royals during his final scheduled visit to Kauffman Stadium. Perez and Hall of Famer George Brett helped to present a $10,000 check to Cabrera's foundation along with a framed crown-and-photo montage, which honored the triple crown that Cabrera clinched in Kansas City on Oct. 4, 2012.

Royals RHP Zack Greinke is expected to come off the IL to start the series finale against Detroit on Thursday. The 39-year-old Greinke (1-9, 5.44) has been out since leaving his start July 4 against Minnesota with right shoulder discomfort. The Tigers will counter with RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-6, 3.75).

Eduardo Rodriguez pitches Detroit Tigers to 3-2 win over Kansas City Royals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Longtime college administrator Lew Perkins, who played basketball at Iowa before serving as the athletic director at several universities and taking on an influential role within the NCAA, died Tuesday. He was 78.

Perkins' family announced his death in a statement issued by Kansas, where he served as the athletic director from June 2003 through September 2011, a period that included a men's basketball national championship.

No cause was given, though Perkins had been battling the effects of Parkinson's disease.

"Lew made an indelible impact on Kansas Athletics and served his role at KU with passion and vigor on a daily basis,” Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. “We will forever be grateful for his dedication to this university and athletic department. We are thinking of Lew’s amazing family during this time and sending our deepest thoughts and sympathies.”

Perkins was chosen for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Trustees in 2005. He also served on the NCAA championships and competition cabinet and the NCAA bowl certification committee.

Perkins grew up in Massachusetts before joining the Hawkeyes, where he played from 1965-67 under Hall of Fame basketball coach Ralph Miller. He then embarked on a career in administration at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, where he helped the school grow from a junior college to a four-year school as both athletic director and basketball coach.

Perkins returned to USC-Aiken in 2005 to receive an honorary doctorate.

He went on to serve as the associate athletic director at Penn before getting the AD job at Wichita State, which was then serving two years of probation. He made the controversial decision to end the school's football program in a cost-saving move, but Perkins was also praised for the hiring of successful basketball coach Eddie Fogler.

Perkins left for Maryland in 1987, where the men's basketball program was reeling from the death of star basketball player Len Bias. During his brief stay, Perkins brought in basketball coach Gary Williams, who later led the Terps to a national title.

Perkins spent the next 13 years as the athletic director at Connecticut, where the women's basketball program won four national titles and the men's basketball and soccer programs also claimed championships. He also was instrumental in the development of the Huskies' football program, which joined the Division I level in 2000 and the Big East a year after his departure.

The often-affable Perkins is perhaps known for his time at Kansas, though.

While he was the Jayhawks' athletic director, their long-downtrodden football program won the 2008 Orange Bowl under Mark Mangino and, months later, the men's basketball national title under Bill Self. The schools' athletic budget soared and significant upgrades were made to Memorial Stadium, the Booth Family Hall of Athletics and other facilities on campus.

Perkins' tenure ended in scandal when, in March 2010, the school announced it was conducting an internal investigation of the athletics ticketing office. A separate investigation led by the FBI and IRS led to federal charges against five employees and one consultant and alleged that they had stolen more than $2 million in tickets to be illegally resold.

Perkins announced months later that he would retire, and he stepped away from the Jayhawks in September 2010.

"Lew did a lot of good things in his time here at KU,” Self said. “He was a big contributor in us changing the mindset of the athletic department and also competing for championships on a more consistent level. ... The one thing I will remember most about Lew was he always put the student-athletes first, and the student-athletes that got to know him well, all loved him.”

Former KU, Wichita State athletics director Lew Perkins dies at 78

The first training camp practice isn't until Sunday, but Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies reported to St. Joseph on Tuesday to begin work.  

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says his advice to the rookies is to get ready to be worked hard as they begin their first training camp.  

"Obviously St. Joe is an amazing spot to have camp and we come out here and have a lot of fun but you've got to be ready to work," Mahomes tells reporters.   "I told them if you can get through Andy Reid's training camp then you're going to be able to get through an NFL season, I think they just have to have that mindset."  

"They got a taste of it during OTA's and that minicamp but they're going to really see what it's like in training camp and they know that if they do it the right way they have as good a chance as anybody to win that Super Bowl." 

Head Coach Andy Reid says now that training camp is here the rookies on the team will start to get more of a feel for the NFL and the team’s expectations. 

"I think you're a little bit guarded just by the rules for your OTA's but it's a good foundation to build with," Reid says to media during the press conference. "But this here will test you both mentally and physically when you have to go through a training camp, and then they have to deal with you guys every day, it's just different." 

Reid says it will also provide the opportunity for players to have more eyes on them with all the fans that come out to Training Camp 

Veterans will report later this week.  The first camp practice will be held on Sunday at 9:15am.

Chiefs rookies and quarterbacks in St. Joseph ahead of Chiefs Training Camp

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dairon Blanco tripled, doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame Spencer Torkelson's two-homer night to outscore the Detroit Tigers 11-10 on Tuesday.

Blanco tripled and scored to help the Royals tie it at 2 in the third, and had a run-scoring single to cap a five-run fourth. He doubled and scored in both the sixth and eighth innings for his first career four-hit game.&nbsp; Blanco's second double was just shy of going over the wall, which would have completed the cycle.

Seven consecutive Royals reached safely in the fourth en route to a 7-2 lead. Freddy Fermin and Drew Waters had RBI doubles and Edward Olivares slapped a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.

In the first inning, Torkelson blasted Daniel Lynch’s sinker 430 feet to left for his first homer since July 2 and a 2-0 lead. He had a three-run shot — his 14th of the season — to left in the fifth to cut it to 7-5.

Torkelson added a seventh-inning double. He had career highs with five RBIs and 10 total bases.

Lynch (3-4) completed five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Detroit left two runners on base after scoring four in the ninth against Scott Barlow.

Detroit's Tarik Skubal (0-1) made his third start of the season after missing almost a year after surgery on his left elbow. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, striking out three over four innings.

Javier Báez doubled and scored in the sixth for the Tigers. Báez had three hits and stole two bases.

Maikel Garcia drove in four runs for Kansas City.

Royals OF Edward Olivares (left oblique strain) was activated from the 10-day IL. 2B/OF Samad Taylor was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

Dairon Blanco has 4 hits and 3 RBIs to help Royals outscore Tigers 11-10

There was already a lot happening at Phil Welch Stadium on Saturday evening, but a chance at Taylor Swift tickets was the cherry on top to a record-breaking night.  

6,013 fans showed up and watched Mustangs baseball and celebrated a Mustangs win with a Taylor Swift themed postgame fireworks show.  Plus, fans attending the game had the chance to win an exceptional prize, two Taylor Swift concert tickets in Seattle and a $250 gift card towards air fare. 

Mustangs General Manager and Owner Ky Turner says after a week of planning Taylor Swift night the reception was incredible, but the lead up to it was nerve wracking 

"That whole week I was just nervous, I refused to look at the weather, the day of it was just like a pit in your stomach because we knew we had the potential for something fun and special to happen," Turner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But I'll tell you I grew up in St. Joe and I've never seen the ballpark like that, and it was just so much fun." 

Turner says the energy from the crowd on Saturday was excellent and fans packed the seats by first pitch to where the only place to sit was the grass in left field. 

Even before gates opened on Saturday fans were lined up across the street for the game, hoping for their chance to win the big prize.  Turner says it felt like a major event in a big city.

Turner says the turnout was incredible, but you don't always see this large crowd at the stadium.  

"You know whether it's from our concessions to our restrooms, to just the walking area, trashcans just all that stuff goes through your head as well like holy cow are we prepared for all of this," Turner says. 

With a turnout similar to that of a Savannah Bananas game, Turner hopes that this can be replicated again. 

"As many people as there were and how crazy it was throughout the night, as soon as we turned off the lights, I was ready to do it again, I mean it was just so much fun," Turner says. 

Taylor Swift night at Phil Welch Stadium surpassed 'Frozen' night in 2014 which brought in 5,345 fans. 

Turner says what Saturday shows is that everyone has a reason to come out to a Mustangs game. 

"Maybe you really like baseball, maybe you like Taylor Swift, maybe it's the summer thing to do and to hang out with your friends or your family, everyone's got a reason, I'll tell you there's definitely not a better value," Turner points out. 

Turner says he's not sure where else you could go and get a free t-shirt, a poster, fireworks, and three hours of baseball for only eight dollars, meeting the mission of providing affordable, family friendly fun in St. Joseph.

 </figure>By MATT PIKE St. Joseph Post There was already a lot happening at Phil Welch Stadium on Saturday evening, but a chance at Taylor Swift tickets was the cherry on top to a record-breaking night. 6,013 fans showed up and watched Mustangs baseball and celebrated a Mustangs win with a Taylor Swift themed postgame fireworks show. Plus, fans attending the game had the chance to win an exceptional prize, two Taylor Swift concert tickets in Seattle and a $250 gift card towards air fare. Mustangs General Manager and Owner Ky Turner says after a week of planning Taylor Swift night the reception was incredible, but the lead up to it was nerve wracking "That whole week I was just nervous, I refused to look at the weather, the day of it was just like a pit in your stomach because we knew we had the potential for something fun and special to happen," Turner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But I'll tell you I grew up in St. Joe and I've never seen the ballpark like that, and it was just so much fun." Turner says the energy from the crowd on Saturday was excellent and fans packed the seats by first pitch to where the only place to sit was the grass in left field. Even before gates opened on Saturday fans were lined up across the street for the game, hoping for their chance to win the big prize. Turner says it felt like a major event in a big city.<figure>

 </figure>Turner says the turnout was incredible, but you don't always see this large crowd at the stadium. "You know whether it's from our concessions to our restrooms, to just the walking area, trashcans just all that stuff goes through your head as well like holy cow are we prepared for all of this," Turner says. With a turnout similar to that of a Savannah Bananas game, Turner hopes that this can be replicated again. "As many people as there were and how crazy it was throughout the night, as soon as we turned off the lights, I was ready to do it again, I mean it was just so much fun," Turner says. Taylor Swift night at Phil Welch Stadium surpassed 'Frozen' night in 2014 which brought in 5,345 fans. Turner says what Saturday shows is that everyone has a reason to come out to a Mustangs game. "Maybe you really like baseball, maybe you like Taylor Swift, maybe it's the summer thing to do and to hang out with your friends or your family, everyone's got a reason, I'll tell you there's definitely not a better value," Turner points out. Turner says he's not sure where else you could go and get a free t-shirt, a poster, fireworks, and three hours of baseball for only eight dollars, meeting the mission of providing affordable, family friendly fun in St. Joseph. <figure>

Taylor Swift Night brings record crowd to Phil Welch Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Matt Vierling capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run double that lifted the Detroit Tigers over Kansas City on Monday night and sent the Royals to their ninth loss in 11 games.

Taylor Clarke (1-4) gave up Akil Baddoo's leadoff double, hit Riley Greene with a pitch with two outs and walked Spencer Torkelson.

José Cuas relieved and walked Kerry Carpenter on four pitches, forcing in a run and ending Detroit's 20-inning scoreless streak. Vierling sliced a sinker to the opposite field in right.

Brendan White (2-2) entered with two on and one out in the seventh and retired pinch-hitter Matt Duffy on a flyout and struck out Nicky Lopez.

Alex Lange struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 18 chances.

Kansas City dropped to 27-68, last in the AL Central.

MJ Melendez, Freddy Fermin and Nick Pratto had consecutive singles in the fourth, the latter two driving in runs. Kansas City had six hits.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles allowed three hits in six shutout innings. Detroit's Matt Manning gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Baddoo, in a 3-for-37 slide, had the game’s only extra-base hit with a leadoff double in the eighth.

RHP Zack Greinke, placed on the 15-day om IL July 5 with right shoulder tendinitis, threw a bullpen session Sunday and is expected to return to the mound against the Tigers. “Everything was good yesterday,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We’re on track for him to make a start Thursday.”

Tigers LHP Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00) makes his third start of the season Tuesday, opposing Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (2-4, 4.18).

With just six games remaining in the MINK League regular season, it was a big matchup on Monday night between the Clarinda A's and the St. Joseph Mustangs in Clarinda, Iowa.&nbsp; The Mustangs though would struggle offensively, falling to the A's 10-2 on the night and allowing Clarinda to narrow St. Joseph's lead in the MINK League North to 2.5 games.

The A's would use a six run third inning to take the momentum from the Mustangs and would hold that 6-0 lead until the top of the eighth inning before St. Joseph would start to fight back.&nbsp;

A Ryan Callahan double would score Lafayette alumni Cole Slibowski and Mason Holton would reach first on an error later in the inning, which allowed Callahan to cross home, narrowing the lead to 6-2, but the A's would strike for four more in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.&nbsp;

The Mustangs were outhits 10-6 in the contest with multiple players getting one hit each, two Mustangs did reach base by walking.&nbsp; Savannah alumni Tyson Hilsabeck pitched six innings but struggled giving up six runs, striking out two while walking four.&nbsp;

The Mustangs are now 28-14 (26-13 conference) and will have an off day on Tuesday.&nbsp; They'll be back in Clarinda on Wednesday for another matchup with the A's.&nbsp; First pitch Wednesday is at 7pm.

The St. Joseph Mustangs started off a four game road trip by pushing their win streak to three games on Sunday evening, winning over the Sedalia Bombers 8-4 in Sedalia.&nbsp;

The scoring started in the third inning as left fielder Easton Bruce earned a bases loaded walk, bringing across catcher Oscar Pegg unearned after Pegg reached first to start the inning on an error.&nbsp; Pegg would drive in the second run of the game in the top of the fourth, grounding out to shortstop and allowing Bishop Leblond alumni Will Dryburg to score, pushing the lead to 2-0 at the end of the top half of the fourth.&nbsp;

The Bombers would narrow the lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Indy Stanley would get his lone hit of the game, a home run to left narrowing the lead to 2-1 at the end of the fourth.&nbsp; After a scoreless fifth inning, the Mustangs would put the game away in the sixth.

Six runs would come across to score in the top of the sixth, the scoring starting with a Pegg double that drove in two.&nbsp; Following the Pegg double, Lafayette alumni Cole Slibowski would single to score Pegg,advancing to second on the throw, then after Slibowski advanced to third base on a passed ball, fellow Lafayette alum Brayden Luikart would single to bring him home.

Luikart would advance to second on a wild pitch, then after walks to Ryan Callahan and Bruce, Michael Paule would push across both Luikart and Callahan with a single to left, scoring the final two runs of the inning and pushing the lead to 8-1 at the end of the top half of the sixth.&nbsp;

Sedalia would add runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings before the game ended on a throw-out to second base as Bombers shortstop Nic Beech would be thrown out trying to advance.

St. Joseph Christian alum Camden Lutz went the distance, pitching a complete game, striking out two and walking six while giving up four runs on five hits, and earning the win. Micahel Paule led at the plate going 2 for 5 and driving in two runs, Oscar Pegg led the way in runs driven in with three.&nbsp;

The Mustangs are now 28-13 (26-12 Conference play) on the season and now sit 3.5 games ahead of the Clarinda A's in the MINK League North.&nbsp; They'll have an opportunity to extend that division lead on Clarinda on Monday as the road trip continues to Clarinda, Iowa to take on the A's.&nbsp; First pitch will be at 7pm.

Mustangs start road trip off with 8-4 win over Sedalia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered and tripled with three RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4 on Sunday for their second win in 10 games.

Witt and Drew Waters became the first Royals teammates to each triple and homer in the same game. In a game that sped by in 1 hour, 54 minutes, Brady Singer (6-8) won for the second time in seven starts since June 4.

“The slider was really good, had some good swing-and-miss on it, and on the changeup, too, when I needed it,” Singer said,

He needed 70 pitches through seven innings and led 7-0 before Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Francisco Mejía hit a three-run drive for the AL-best Rays (60-36).

“When you have a sinker that’s working like that and they put the ball on ground early, it provides a lot of confidence for him to be able to work quickly and be able to move through the game efficiently.” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Singer allowed four runs and seven hits in a season-high eight innings as Kansas City improved to 27-67, the second-worst record in the major leagues and ahead of only Oakland.

“That’s vintage sinkerballer,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “You’re relying on the late movement to get the ball on the ground and that’s what happened. He just had some extra movement on it today that made it a little challenging for us.”

The early lead gave Singer confidence to attack hitters.

“It set me up to be able to stay in the zone more," he said. "I was definitely more aggressive with that lead. I was staying in the zone so much. Throwing so many strikes was helping me to get them to swing early.”

Zach Eflin (10-5) gave up a season-high five runs and seven hits over a season-low three innings, allowing hits to seven of his first 11 batters. The Rays had won three straight after a season-worst seven-game losing streak.

“I had a pretty bad bullpen going into the game,” Eflin said. “I didn’t feel like I was in sync. The sinker wasn’t working. I couldn’t figure out where the ball was going. I knew something was off going into the game. I didn’t set the tone like I should have.”

In a game that started one hour later because of rain, Royals All-Star catcher Salvador Perez left in the second inning after feeling left hamstring discomfort while scoring on Melendez’s double.

MJ Melendez hit a two-out RBI double in the first and the Royals opened a 5-0 lead in the second. Waters hit an RBI triple and scored on Nick Pratto’s single. Witt, who has an extra-base hit in six straight games, hit a two-run, two-out triple.

“Seeing the guys before me put together good at-bats gives you confidence,” Witt said. “Just trying to simplify as much as possible and just trying to put a good swing on the ball.”

Waters led off the fourth against Yonny Chirinos with a 465-foot home run to the upper level of the right-field fountains.

Witt led off the fifth with his 16th homer and Melendez hit a solo homer in the eighth off Chirinos.

Royals RHP Collin Snider was optioned to Omaha and RHP Max Castillo was recalled from the Triple-A team.

Royals RHP Josh Staumont, placed on the 60-day IL on Saturday, is expected to have thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and miss the rest of the season.

RHP Matt Manning (3-1, 3.72) takes on Royals RHP Jordan Lyles (1-11, 6.42) in Kansas City on Monday.

The St. Joseph Mustangs had a lot to celebrate on Saturday night.&nbsp; It was Missouri Western night, it was another Tenderloins night, and a record breaking 6,013 fans showed up to see the Mustangs remain in first place in the MINK League North with a 10-4 win over Des Moines.&nbsp;

The night started off slow for St. Joseph though, as Des Moines took an early 2-0 lead through two innings, but after that it was all Mustangs.&nbsp; St. Joseph drew one run closer in the third before taking the lead for good in the fourth inning.&nbsp;

Lafayette alumni Jayden Little would drive in two runs with a triple and then after fellow Lafayette alum Cole Slibowski would drive Little in with a single, Ryan Callahan would score Slibowski for the final run of the frame, putting the Mustangs up 5-2 after four innings.&nbsp;

The Prospects would draw one run closer in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom half of the inning another triple, this time by catcher Ben Click would score two, and in the next at bat pinch hitter Aron Harrington who hit for Little would drive in Click with a single.&nbsp; Des Moines would struggle with command for the final two runs of the inning as both Callahan and Lafayette alum Ike Book would walk with the bases loaded, pushing the Mustangs lead to 10-3 at the end of the fifth.

The final Des Moines run would be scored in the top of the ninth with Savannah alum Braden Berry on the mound closing out the game.&nbsp;

Mustangs earn win over Des Moines on record breaking night at Phil Welch Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luke Raley had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Saturday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Jose Siri hit a pair of solo homers as the Rays won the first game 6-1 to open the second half. AL East-leading Tampa Bay has won three in a row after a season-high, seven-game losing streak and at 60-35 became the first AL team to 60 wins.

“That was awesome to come out the first games out of break like that,” the Rays' Josh Lowe said. “To start the second half this way should build some momentum for us and carry us into the second half.”

Kansas City has lost eight of nine, dropping to 26-67 and falling 41 games under .500 for the first time since under 2019 at 59-103.. The Royals were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since May 25, 2019, against the New York Yankees after going 2-0-7 in their previous nine twinbills.

Dairon Blanco's RBI grounder in the fifth put the Royals ahead 2-1 in the nightcap. Lowe tied the score with a run-scoring triple in the seventh and Raley singled in the eighth against Carlos Hernández (0-5). Harold Ramírez added a sacrifice fly in the ninth against Dylan Coleman.

Colin Poche (7-2) threw a 1-2-3 seventh. Pete Fairbanks, pitching before about 50 family and friends, worked around Salvador Perez's leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

“The Royals pitched us tough all day," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “It felt like we kind of just had to hang in there and have some timely at-bats late in the ballgame.”

Perez had four hits in the opener, one shy of his career high. His fifth-inning double made him the sixth Kansas City player with 500 extra-base hits.

Cole Ragans, a 25-year-old left-hander, made his Royals debut in the night game and allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

A day after the series opener was rained out, Tyler Glasnow (3-3) gave up one run and six hits over six innings and struck out six in the day game. Glasnow had been 0-3 in four starts since a June 14 win at Oakland.

“I felt good all game,” Glasnow said. “I kind of felt off to start, but as the innings went on I got a rhythm. It was a battle today and ended up being a good game.”

Siri homered in the third off Alec Marsh (0-3) and the ninth off Nick Wittgren for his seventh career multihomer game. Siri has 18 home runs this season.

“I know I've been striking out a lot, but everyone knows that. It felt good to connect on those two," Siri said.

Francisco Mejía gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the fifth when he homered off Marsh, who allowed two runs and five hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk. The strikeouts were a high for a Royals pitcher in his first three big league starts.

“Getting strikeouts the last two games were difficult for me,” Marsh said. “I thought the attack mode was good all game. I think mindset wise I knew to keep attacking and knowing I needed to make a pitch with two strikes.”

Kansas City's Collin Snider opened the eighth with 13 consecutive balls. Raley followed with a two-run single and Josh Lowe hit a sacrifice fly.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a 424-foot homer in the fifth.

One day after an out of division loss to the Kansas City Monarchs, the St. Joseph Mustangs returned to MINK League play with a boom, winning in seven innings against the Chillicothe Mudcats 16-4 on Friday night.&nbsp;

It wasn't easy though for the Mustangs to start.&nbsp; The Mudcats would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before St. Joseph would knot the game in the bottom half, as Savannah alumni Noah Bodenhausen scored on a wild pitch, and they would later take the lead as Lafayette alumni Brayden Luikart would score on yet another wild pitch.&nbsp;

Chillicothe would go on to tie the game back up in the top of the second, before once again in the bottom half of the inning the Mustangs would take the lead back thanks to Luikart who drove in two runs on a single and later in the inning a Ryan Callahan single would drive in two more, giving them a 6-2 lead at the end of two innings.&nbsp;

The Mudcats would draw a little closer in the fourth innings driving in their final two runs of the game, but the Mustangs would go on to score one run in the bottom half of the inning, and then score eight more in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading Chillicothe 15-4 after five frames.&nbsp;

The final run of the game came in the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly from Callahan that would score Luikart giving them the 16-4 lead before Ryker Curry would close out the game in his third inning of work in the seventh where the game would be called by run rule.&nbsp;

It was quite the showing for two Lafayette alums on the team as both Luikart and Jayden Little were 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI's. Luikart was just a home run shy of the cycle, while Little also had one stolen base on the night.&nbsp; Callahan also drove in four on the night while going 2 for 4.

On the mound Michael Infranca pitched four innings giving up all four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out one, before Curry came in and pitched three innings of relief also striking out one and giving up three hits.&nbsp;

The Mustangs are now 26-13 on the season, 24-12 in MINK League play, and remain in first place in the MINK League North division.&nbsp; They will wrap up a three game homestand on Saturday against the Des Moines Peak Prospects before hitting the road for four games, first pitch is at 7pm.

Mustangs bounce back after Thursday loss with seven inning win over Chillicothe Friday

Kansas City is set to host the World Cup in 2026, and Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph is hoping to play a role in that.

The University hopes to be a host and practice site for a country's team. Missouri Western athletic director Andy Carter says being the home of Chiefs training camp bolsters the University's resume.

"(Kansas City) knows we know how to host," Carter told KFEQ Radio. "With the work we do with the Chiefs. Now, we're kind of in a waiting game. When the countries get put on their sites, then they'll make options to those countries. Then, as I understand it, it'll be a negotiation between us and that country."

FIFA did a site visit to Missouri Western last year. Kansas City is one of 11 U.S. cities selected to host the World Cup in 2026.

Carter says potentially hosting an international team will create more work, but also more excitement.

"There's some facility work we'll have to do on the back fields to get that up to speed, but I think that's doable," he said. "At least, they thought it was doable when they agreed to do it. Yeah, it's exciting. It'll make for a very busy summer that summer, because we'll presumably have the Chiefs (training camp) as well."

Carter says the prospect of hosting a World Cup teams speaks well to the quality of facilities and people the University has.

"It's not a big secret that we're blessed to have great facilities and we have high quality people who know how to operate events," he said. "So that not only does the participant get what they need, but then the fan interaction is good and it makes for a good experience. We're excited and looking forward to that opportunity."

The World Cup is the most viewed sporting event in the world, with last year's final drawing 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. There were around five billion total viewers over the course of the month-long World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The 2026 World Cup could generate up to $695 million of economic activity in the state of Missouri.

Missouri Western looking to be a host site for a team during 2026 World Cup

The St. Joseph Mustangs fell to the KC Monarchs 6-3 Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium in an out-of-league matchup.

The Mustangs led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Monarchs scored four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

The Monarchs were limited to just two hits, but they drew nine walks and benefitted from three Mustang errors.

Easton Bruce led St. Joseph at the plate, going 2-for-5. The Mustangs had six hits, but struck out 13 times and stranded 10 base runners.

The Mustangs fall to 25-13 on the season. St. Joseph stays home Friday to host Chillicothe. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost to the Carroll Merchants 10-9 in walk-off fashion Wednesday in a game that went 11 innings at Merchants Park in Carroll.

St. Joseph led 9-7 at the top of the 11th, but the Merchants scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to steal a win.

St. Joseph also led 7-3 in the top of the ninth before the Merchants scored four runs to tie the game and send it to extras.

Lafayette alum Ike Book went 1-for-5 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run. Ben Click was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Starting pitcher Aron Harrington went six innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. He struck out four and walked three. Jaren Guck was charged with the loss.

The Mustangs are now 25-12 on the season. The team returns home for a three-game homestand beginning with a game Thursday against the KC Monarchs.
