

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -&nbsp;In 27 years of the D2CCA Football All-America program there have been just two true freshmen named to the first team. Missouri Western's&nbsp;Trey Vaval&nbsp;just became the second.

The dynamic return man earned first team honors as selected by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America. The Blue Springs native led DII with 1,335 combined return yards and ranked second in all levels of NCAA football in the category. Vaval's 34.3 yards per kick return were third most in DII and broke a 27-year-old MIAA record. As a punt returner, Vaval ranked second in DII with a 21.1 yard average.

Vaval was named MVP of the Agent Barry Live United Bowl with 225 return yards. He became Missouri Western's first freshman All-American when he earned second team honors from the AFCA. Vaval was also a first team All-MIAA selection as a returner and earned first team D2CCA All-Region honors.

Phillips is a senior defensive lineman from Tabor, Iowa. Phillips has also earned second-team All-America honors from the Associated Press. Phillips was the 2019&nbsp;MIAA&nbsp;Defensive Player of the Year and started all 14 games on the defensive line. Phillips earned first-team&nbsp;all-MIAA&nbsp;status. He led the&nbsp;MIAA&nbsp;in tackles-for-loss (15) and tied for second in the league in sacks (8.0). Phillips recovered a team-best three fumbles. Phillips registered 51 total tackles, was credited with eight quarterback hurries and recorded two safeties.

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. Bearcats' Owen, Phillips garner D2CCA football All-America honors 

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Head Football Coach Eli Drinkwitz has tabbed veteran coach David Gibbs to join his new Mizzou coaching staff, as announced today.  Gibbs, who will be part of Drinkwitz’s defensive staff, is a 26-year veteran of the coaching industry, including 11 seasons as a defensive coordinator in the college ranks, and nine seasons as a defensive backs coach for three different NFL teams.  Position-specific duties for Gibbs will be detailed once the staff has been finalized.

Gibbs spent this past season as cornerbacks coach at Mizzou, and the Tiger defense performed very well under his guidance.  In 2019, Mizzou’s defense ranked in the nation’s Top 20 in several major categories, including total defense (14th NCAA/3rd SEC– 312.0 avg.) and scoring defense (17th NCAA/6th SEC – 19.4 avg., while excelling as a Top 10 pass defense (eighth in passing yards allowed NCAA/second SEC – 179.3 avg.).

“Coach Gibbs is a great fit for our defensive staff,” said Drinkwitz.  “He’s well-respected within the profession as a developer of talent, and he’s got invaluable experience at both the collegiate and NFL levels.  I’m excited about his expertise and how he can help shape the philosophy within our defensive staff.  I’m pleased to have he and Debbie and their family be part of our program.”

Gibbs came to Mizzou after spending four seasons (2015-18) as defensive coordinator at Texas Tech, where his defenses became known as one of the nation’s top turnover-creating units.  In 2017, Tech led the Big 12 Conference and ranked sixth nationally with 29 forced turnovers on the year, including four defensive scores, which was the most by a Red Raider defense since 2001.  From 2013-17, Gibbs’ defenses at Tech and Houston forced a combined 140 turnovers, which was tied for most in the nation among any defensive coordinator during that five-year span.

“I’m excited to be part of Coach Drink’s staff at Mizzou, it’s a great opportunity for me and my family,” said Gibbs.  “I’m looking forward to continuing to work with Coach Walters, we did some good things here defensively last season, and we’ve got a great group of kids coming back who are excited to work hard to improve this program.”

Gibbs has previously served as defensive coordinator at Minnesota (1997-2000, Auburn (2005) and Houston (2013-14, and also took over as interim Head Coach for the Cougars’ appearance in the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl.  In that game, Gibbs’ team posted the biggest fourth quarter comeback win in bowl game history, overcoming a 31-6 deficit with just 11 minutes remaining in the game to notch a thrilling 35-34 victory over Pittsburgh.

In his first season at the helm of the Red Raider defense, Gibbs preached the importance of forcing turnovers and the emphasis was very beneficial, as Tech went from a minus-13 turnover margin in 2014 to plus-2 in 2015.  The Red Raiders picked off 15 passes and recovered 10 fumbles in 2015, a year after forcing just 15 turnovers altogether.

Gibbs quickly changed the defensive culture at Houston in quick order after his arrival prior to the 2013 season.  The Cougars ranked as the third-most improved scoring defense nationally and ranked 20th in the country after allowing 21.8 points per game, a significant improvement from the 36 points per game Houston surrendered in 2012.

The 2013 Houston defense led the nation with 43 turnovers forced to help lead the Cougars to a nation’s best plus-25 turnover margin.  Trevon Stewart led the nation and set a UH record with six fumble recoveries while Adrian McDonald led The American Athletic Conference with six interceptions.

The dramatic defensive overhaul under Gibbs continued in 2014 as Houston finished the regular season ranked 11th nationally in scoring defense at 19.5 points per game and 19th nationally in total defense at 334.6 yards per game.  The Houston defense was fifth nationally with 30 takeaways, including 19 interceptions, a number that ranked sixth nationally.

Prior to Houston, Gibbs’ last collegiate coaching stop was in 2005 when he served as defensive coordinator at Auburn.  The Tiger defense ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 15.5 points per game that season, while ranking 11th in sacks (39) and 16th in third-down defense.

On the professional level, Gibbs spent a combined nine seasons in Denver, Kansas City and Houston as a defensive backs coach.  Teams sporting Gibbs on staff finished in the Top 12 of total defense five times and advanced to the NFL Playoffs on three occasions.  Three players under Gibbs earned NFL Pro Bowl selections in Champ Bailey, John Lynch and Deltha O’Neal.

Gibbs received his NFL start in 2001 with Denver where in his first year, the Broncos defense ranked sixth in the league for interceptions and ninth in total defense.  In 2002, the defense improved to sixth in total defense and third in passing touchdowns allowed.  The following two years saw Denver advance to the playoffs as the Broncos ranked fourth in the NFL in total defense both seasons.  Both years also saw the squad finish sixth in passing defense and in the Top 10 of scoring defense.

Following his one season at Auburn, Gibbs returned to the NFL in 2006 as a defensive backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Gibbs spent three seasons with the Chiefs, assisting with a Kansas City defense that improved from 25th in total defense the year prior to his arrival to 12th overall. In 2007, the Chiefs improved to fifth in the league in passing defense while ranking fourth in passing touchdowns allowed. 

The Chiefs allowed just one 300-yard passer in each of his first two seasons in Kansas City. After helping the 2008 Kansas City defense to finish ninth in turnovers forced, Gibbs moved to Houston where the Texans’ pass defense improved seven spots to 10th in the league in passing defense in his first year. 

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Gibbs became the youngest coordinator on the FBS level at the time as the then-29-year old took over as defensive coordinator at Minnesota in 1997.  Gibbs improved a Minnesota defense that had ranked last in the Big Ten in 1996 to one that was ranked eighth nationally in pass efficiency defense and scoring defense by 1999.  His defense helped lead the Golden Gophers to back-to-back bowl games in 1999 and 2000.

Under Gibbs’ tutelage, Tyrone Carter won the 1999 Jim Thorpe Award and back-to-back All-America honors in 1998 and 1999.  Defensive end Lamanzer Williams earned All-America honors in 1997 as Gibbs’ defense produced an All-American in three-straight seasons for the first time at Minnesota since 1961-63.  In addition, defensive end Karon Riley was named the 2000 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. Under Gibbs, six Minnesota defensive players earned first-team All-Big Ten honors while six more earned second-team honors.

Gibbs earned his first full-time coaching position in 1995 at the University of Kansas, where he coached the program’s defensive backs.  The Jayhawks advanced to just their eighth bowl game in program history in Gibbs’ first year where they defeated UCLA in the Aloha Bowl.  Defensive back Dorian Brew earned All-Big Eight honors in Gibbs’ first season while Tony Blevins and Jason Harris each earned All-Big 12 honors under Gibbs.

Gibbs began his coaching journey with back-to-back two-year stints as a graduate assistant at both Colorado and Oklahoma.  Oklahoma won the 1991 Gator Bowl while Colorado collected wins in the 1993 Aloha Bowl and 1994 Fiesta Bowl with Gibbs on staff.

The Auburn, Ala., native was a four-year letterman at the University of Colorado from 1987-90. He started at defensive back for the 1990 national-title winning Colorado team and the 11-1 1989 team that finished fourth nationally in the final polls.  Gibbs graduated from Colorado in 1990, earning Academic All-Big Eight honors as a senior.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State freshman kick returner&nbsp;Joshua Youngblood&nbsp;recorded another postseason accolade as he was named a Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Second Team All-American, the organization announced Thursday.

It is Youngblood’s fifth All-America designation this year. He was named to ESPN’s team on Monday, while he has also been named a Second Team All-American by CBS Sports, a Freshman All-American by&nbsp;The Athletic&nbsp;and a True Freshman All-American by 247Sports.

Youngblood, the first Wildcat true freshman with multiple first- or second-team honors since&nbsp;Tyler Lockett&nbsp;in 2011, was honored as the 2019 Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year after leading the country with three kickoff-return touchdowns during the regular season. His three scores rank third in school history for a season and fourth in a career, while he ranks third in Big 12 history for a season and already tied for seventh in a career.

Youngblood holds a Big 12-leading 38.1-yard kickoff-return average, which would rank first in the nation if he had two more attempts to meet the NCAA required minimum.

Northwest Missouri State senior defensive lineman Spencer Phillips has earned Associated Press Second Team All-America honors.&nbsp;

Phillips (Tabor, Iowa) was named the&nbsp;MIAA&nbsp;Defensive Player of the Year and started all 14 games on the defensive line. Phillips earned first-team&nbsp;all-MIAA&nbsp;status. Northwest's Phillips named 2nd Team AP All-American

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Head Football Coach Eli Drinkwitz has shored up another key spot on his coaching staff, and he’s chosen Ryan Walters, who has coached at MU for the past five seasons, to serve as defensive coordinator.  Position-specific duties for Walters will be announced once the staff has been finalized.

Walters, who came to Mizzou in 2015 as safeties coach, has served as defensive coordinator for the past two years, and he has overseen an impressive transformation of the Tiger defense into one of the SEC’s top units.  In 2019, Walters’ defense ranked in the nation’s Top 20 in several major categories, including total defense (14th NCAA/3rd SEC– 312.0 avg.) and scoring defense (17th NCAA/6th SEC – 19.4 avg., while excelling as a Top 10 pass defense (eighth in passing yards allowed NCAA/second SEC – 179.3 avg.).

Under Walters’ direction in 2019, a pair of junior safeties – Tyree Gillespie and Joshuah Bledsoe – developed into big play fixtures in the secondary as they ranked second and third on the team, respectively, in tackles.  Gillespie finished the year with 50 stops, seven pass break-ups, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble, while Bledsoe was close behind with 49 tackles, four tackles for loss and a team-best 10 pass break-ups.  Additionally, two Tiger defenders earned All-America honors in 2019, including junior DT Jordan Elliott (1st-Team Pro Football Focus, 2nd-Team Associated Press) and sophomore LB Nick Bolton (3rd-Team Pro Football Focus).

“Since connecting with Ryan I’ve been very impressed with his ability to lead people and connect with the players,” said Drinkwitz.  “I’m impressed with his work on the defensive side of the ball, I look forward to building on what’s already been established, the foundation that’s been laid.  I look forward to Coach Walters leading a championship-style defense here at Mizzou.”

Walters took the reins as Mizzou’s defensive coordinator permanently for the 2018 season.  During the course of the season, the defense’s improved play was a big factor in MU’s 4-0 romp through November on the way to an eight-win season and a bid to the 2018 AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to continue to build on what we’ve done defensively this past season,” said Walters.  “We’ve got a good group of guys coming back and they’re excited to get to work. Walters' defense made huge strides in 2018 from the previous year in a handful of significant statistical categories.  His squad ranked 22nd nationally in rushing defense (126.5 avg., up from 58th in 2017 (159.6, and improved to 50th in scoring defense in 2018 (25.5 avg., up from 97th in 2017 (31.8 avg., while also making a big jump in total defense, ranking 62nd nationally in 2018 (388.5 avg., up from 82nd in 2017 (414.1 avg.).

As the Tiger secondary coach, Walters oversaw a unit that made big strides during the course of the season.  Junior CB DeMarkus Acy led the charge as he earned second-team All-SEC honors by league coaches for his stellar play down the stretch.  Acy led Mizzou and ranked fourth in the SEC with three interceptions, while he was second on the team with 10 pass break-ups.  Senior safety Cam Hilton closed his Tiger career in fine fashion, as he picked off a pair of Oklahoma State passes in the 2018 AutoZone Liberty Bowl that helped set the stage for a late Tiger rally that nearly led to a thrilling come-from-behind win.

The development of sophomore CB Christian Holmes over the second half of the 2018 season coincided nicely with the defense's improvement late in the year, as Holmes led the team with 12 pass break-ups, while nabbing a pair of interceptions - including one he returned 42 yards for his first career touchdown during an important Homecoming win over Memphis.

In December of 2017, Walters was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator before Mizzou's 2017 Texas Bowl appearance.  Prior to the 2017 season, Walters assumed control of the entire secondary, after focusing on the safeties in his first two years with the program.

Walters oversaw a secondary that developed nicely during the stretch run of the 2017 season, as his group played a key role in Mizzou’s defensive resurgence that helped lead to its six-game winning streak which led to Mizzou receiving a bid to play in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl against Texas.

Eight of Mizzou’s 12 interceptions gained in 2017 came during the final five games, with six of those going to Walters’ secondary.  Senior safety Anthony Sherrils had a pair of pick-offs during that stretch, as did true freshman corner Adam Sparks, who emerged late in the year as a solid contributor despite his youth.

Walters came to MU from Memphis in February of 2015 and was a key factor in Mizzou’s 2015 defense that finished in the Top 10 nationally in total defense, scoring defense and pass defense.  He came to Mizzou after spending the 2014 season as cornerbacks coach at Memphis, where he oversaw a defense that was among the most improved in the nation.  Memphis went 10-3 in 2014, thanks in large part to its defense that ranked fifth nationally in points allowed (17.1 avg.) and 22nd in total defense (343.3 avg.) in the regular season. 

A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Walters played collegiately at Colorado, where he was a standout safety for the Buffaloes (2004-08). He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Colorado working with the secondary in 2009, and then spent two years on staff at Arizona, where he was a graduate assistant in 2010, before being promoted to defensive backs coach for the 2011 season.

From there, Walters moved to Oklahoma as a graduate assistant cornerbacks coach in 2012, as the Sooners went 10-3 and played in the 2013 Cotton Bowl. He moved to North Texas for the 2013 season, where he coached corners and helped lead UNT to a 9-4 record in its first year in Conference USA and a win in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Mean Green defense that season ranked fourth nationally in turnovers gained (34, eighth in points allowed (17.8 ppg, 13th in interceptions (18) and 17th in total defense (348.3 ypg).

As a player, Walters had a standout career as a safety at Colorado. He started 33 times in 46 contests for the Buffaloes, and earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press and first-team All-Colorado honors from the state’s National Football Foundation his senior year.

A 2008 team captain for the Buffaloes, Walters was voted that season as team MVP by his teammates. He had 87 tackles, two sacks, seven pass deflections, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions as a senior. When his playing days ended, his 20 career passes defended rate No. 15 in Colorado history and his 223 career tackles were No. 45 all-time.

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The No. 4-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat men's basketball team soared to a 110-66 victory over the visiting Central Methodist University Eagles.

Northwest (9-1 overall) had six players reach double-figure scoring led by junior Ryan Hawkins with a game-high 32 points. Hawkins was 13-of-15 from the floor and scored 28 of his 32 points in the opening half. Hawkins also added five steals, four rebounds and three assists.

The Bearcats shot a sizzling 66.7% from the field by draining 42-of-63 field goals. Northwest sank 53.6% of its three-point shots (15-of-28). The Bearcats forced 23 turnovers, which resulted in 16 steals for the home squad.&nbsp;

Central Methodist (3-10 overall) shot 46.2% from the field (24-of-52). The Eagles made 34.8% of their three-point attempts (8-of-23). The rebounding battle was tied at 24-24.

CMU came out gunning and made 62.5% of its first-half shots (15-of-24, but Northwest was even more effective shooting 65.5% in the opening 20 minutes by draining 21-of-32 field goals. Hawkins was 11-of-12 at the half and had sank all five of his three-point field goals. Northwest led 58-37 at the break.

“Casey has been around college football for a long time, he’s got a tremendous heritage with his father’s history,” said Drinkwitz.&nbsp; “He’s got a tremendous work ethic and a very bright future and we’re excited to bring him and his family to Columbia to help us build the program.”

In 2018, Woods was key to the Blazers turning in their best offensive season in program history, which resulted in an 11-3 overall record and winning the school’s first ever Conference USA title and bowl game.

Missouri Western women's game vs. Peru State moved to 6 PM Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs turned Arrowhead Stadium into their own winter wonderland Sunday, mushing through the snow to an easy victory over the Denver Broncos as they march toward another postseason filled with possibilities.

Patrick Mahomes threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, and Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce were on the receiving end of many of his biggest throws, as the AFC West champions romped to a 23-3 victory over the rebuilding Broncos to remain in the hunt for the No. 2 playoff seed and a potential first-round bye.

"It was awesome. A lot of fun," said Mahomes, who showed no lingering effects from the hand his bruised last week. "The guys were embracing it. We knew it was going to snow. We practice in cold weather a lot. So you get there, you're already accustomed to it, and you go out there and play."

Like a bunch of kids getting a snow day from school, the Chiefs enjoyed every minute of it.

Hill caught five passes for 67 yards and both scores, and Kelce hauled in 11 catches for 142 yards to become the first tight end in NFL history with four consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons, helping the Chiefs (10-4) beat the Broncos for the ninth straight time. Denver (5-9) hasn't won in Kansas City since Sept. 17, 2015.

The Chiefs outscored their longtime division rival 53-9 this season.

"You just attack it. You can't let weather get into how you're playing the game or disrupt how you're playing the game," Kelce said. "That's the biggest thing in terms of mindset, going out there and not letting anything distract you."

Whether it was the weather or the suddenly stout Chiefs defense, the Broncos were so inept offensively that Kelce had more yards receiving at the start of the fourth quarter than they had total offense (139 yards). Phillip Lindsay was bottled up on the ground, and former Missouri standout Drew Lock -- who grew up in the Kansas City suburb of Lee's Summit, Missouri -- spent most of the day seeing red jerseys bearing down on him.

The rookie quarterback was 18 of 40 for 208 yards and an egregious interception in the end zone.

"I think he handled the conditions well. I think it's a game under these conditions that he can bank and learn from," said Broncos coach Vic Fangio, whose team was eliminated from playoff contention for the fourth straight season. "I didn't see him get flustered out there and frustrated so that part was good."

That was about the only good part. The Broncos finished with 251 yards, went 5 of 14 on third down and 1 of 3 on fourth, and were penalized seven times for 72 yards. They also went 0 for 2 in the red zone.

"When you play a team as good as the Chiefs," Fangio said, "you can't do that."

Flurries began to fall overnight, far earlier than meteorologists had predicted, and the intensifying snow caused major problems for people trying to get to the stadium. There were spin-outs and car accidents throughout the metro area, and there was some concern that players might be delayed in getting to the stadium in time for warmups.

An hour before kickoff, dozens of workers were clearing off the yard lines, end zones and sidelines as the snow swirled inside the stadium. It really began to pick up again at halftime, obscuring Kauffman Stadium about a quarter mile away, and stadium workers flooded the field to clear what they could during every timeout.

It wasn't long until Andy Williams' sonorous voice over the loudspeakers made the snow globe atmosphere complete.

And for the Chiefs, it seemed indeed like the most wonderful time of the year.

They effortlessly marched downfield for a touchdown on their opening drive, then got a trio of field goals from Harrison Butker on their next three first-half possessions to build a 12-3 lead. When they received the kickoff to start the second half, Mahomes took them right downfield again, finding Hill for their second TD connection of the game.

The Broncos didn't force a punt until there was about six minutes left in the third quarter.

By that point, the game was pretty much over.

The biggest cheers the rest of the way were for the Cincinnati Bengals, who were trying to knock off the New England Patriots. They couldn't hold an early lead, though, and that left the Chiefs needing to win out and the Patriots to drop one of their final two games to move ahead of them in the playoff pecking order.

"That was very fun," said Hill, who left the game after a couple of hard hits but returned to finish it out. "This is my first snow game and I had a blast with it. I don't want to do it again because it's very cold, but I had fun with it."

Lindsay had 32 yards rushing and the Broncos finished with 52 as a team. ... Broncos LB Von Miller had the 105th sack of his career. He needs one more to move into the top 25 in NFL history. ... Chiefs roll to 23-3 victory over Broncos at snowy Arrowhead

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Mark Smith wasn't surprised he scored a season-high 23 points to lead Missouri to a 64-48 victory over Southern Illinois on Sunday. He felt so good in pregame warm-ups, he knew something big was coming.

Smith, a junior guard, has never questioned himself despite an up-and-down start to the season. Smith led the Southeastern Conference in 3-point accuracy last year, shooting 45%. He entered Sunday's game making 35.1% of his 3s, but he made 7 of 9 shots from beyond the arc against the Salukis.

"I don't think Mark lacks confidence, because he'll keep shooting, as you can see," Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin said.

Javon Pickett came off the bench to score 13 for Missouri (6-4) in his second straight double-figure scoring game. Point guard Dru Smith scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Eric McGill led Southern Illinois (4-7) with 11 points.

Mark Smith broke open a close game midway through the first half by hitting four straight 3-pointers. On the last one, he pulled up on a fast break and kept his right hand extended as the ball swished through the net, giving Missouri a 21-9 lead and forcing a Southern Illinois timeout.

"We had him down as their best shooter and the guy we couldn't leave," SIU coach Bryan Mullins said. "That was disappointing to see."

McGill hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Missouri's lead to 33-22 at halftime.

The Tigers' advantage grew to 56-31 with 9:12 left in the game when Mark Smith sank his sixth 3-pointer. Missouri held the Salukis to 29.4% shooting and outrebounded them 37-21. SIU made just 10 field goals in the game but made 23 of 26 free throws.

"They had a lot of length on the perimeter, and that bothered our offensive execution," Mullins said. "We've got to do a better job of playing downhill. We were playing east-west too much today."

Missouri didn't exploit its size advantage offensively, with 6-foot-10 starting forwards Jeremiah Tilmon and Mitchell Smith combining for six points. But the Tigers did score 28 points in the paint by sending guards cutting through the lane to score around the basket. Pickett, in particular, has become more productive by attacking the basket.

"With Jeremiah, when teams send a double-team, they send it different ways -- from the top, off the passer, from the bottom," Martin said. "We try to do a lot of things to show him looks, so you have multiple guys cutting. Javon's one of those guys that's a willing cutter, because he knows he can benefit from it."

Southern Illinois: Ronnie Suggs scored four points in his return to the arena he called home for the last two years. Suggs began his career at Bradley, transferred to Missouri as a walk-on after his sophomore year, sat out one year per NCAA rules and then played in 27 games for the Tigers last season. He moved on to Southern Illinois as a graduate transfer for this season. Suggs missed the first four games because of injury but has started the last seven.
