Larry L. Wells,71, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

He was born April 11, 1952 in St. Joseph to Harry and Lucille (Slocum) Wells.

Larry married Annette Betts on June 28, 1980. She survives of the home.

He was a welder at Johnson Controls for 44½ years before retiring and was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 49, where he and Annette would go dancing.

In his younger years, Larry enjoyed playing softball and bowling. He liked to watch NASCAR and the Chiefs and loved cheering for his grandchildren at their sporting events.

Though known for his sharp wit, he was a big softy on Christmas. He took a week off every year for his favorite holiday, helping with numerous decorations and enjoying having the family together for a big dinner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Janice VanGinkel and Marilyn Smith.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 43 years, Annette; children, Larry Wells (Ashley), Lachelle Lysaght (Jeff), Kevin Wells (Tammy), Eric Wells (Meagan), Nicholas Wells (Kadence), and Stephanie Windham; grandchildren, Ilanea Keenan (Cody), and Taylor, Elizabeth, Lauren, Brandy and Brent Wells; great-granddaughter, Nova Keenan; sister, Anita Schmidt (Larry); brother-in-law, Larry Smith; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Bella.

Mary Elizabeth (Montague) Anderson, 101, of Platte City, passed away on June 15, 2023, at the Gower Convalescent Center. Mary Bet or Betsy as she was called by her family and friends, was born on April 11, 1922 to Effie (Howard) and Louis Montague in rural Platte County near Camden Point, MO. She attended the one room Styne school through 8th grade and then graduated from Camden Point High School in 1939. Her family moved from their home near Camden Point to her ancestral home near Platte City in 1936. With the exception of a few brief periods early in her marriage, she resided there until April of this year. She was united in marriage to Bennie Ray Anderson on August 19, 1942. He prematurely preceded her in death on May 5, 1968. She is survived by her son Ronnie Ray Anderson (Dana), her daughter Monty Kay (Dave) Clark, both of Platte City and her grandson Ben Clark (Karli).

It was no secret that Betsy loved the farm and animals – particularly horses and cats. Not many years ago, Dave asked her if she could name all the horses she had in her life. We are pretty sure that her long list was complete and accurate! The whole family was in the Platte County Saddle Club and she participated in countless parades including the American Royal for many years. Betsy hauled Kay and her horses all over the area for years so she could participate in local shows. She also attended a southern Missouri trail ride on the Big Piney for 20 consecutive years.&nbsp;

She had a deep fondness for chickens, ducks and geese, too, and had a lot of them over the years. Many years ago she raised some quail. One time she successfully raised one tiny baby rabbit from a nest of several she had harrowed over while preparing a field for planting. Animals that were supposed to be raised for profit were not exempt from her adoration. Too many times hogs, sheep and cows that should have been moved on were held back because she couldn’t bear to part with them. She and Bennie farmed together prior to his death. She was at her happiest working in the field running a tractor or taking care of the livestock. It was no secret she was not at all fond of anything resembling housework – although she did love to make yeast rolls in her younger days. She loved to drive the old 2 ton Chevy farm truck during harvest – or anytime. For a time she helped Ronnie by operating his belt loader that picked up rock from an abandoned rail bed. She really loved to drive anything and successfully renewed her driver’s license at the age of 97. (She didn’t have anything to drive, but it was kind of the principle!) She said a lot of times that if she was younger and needed a job, she would like to have been a truckdriver.&nbsp; She grew up with a father that was a very successful trap shooter. Guns were a passion of his and he passed this on to his daughter. She wasn’t interested in trap shooting (except many years later when she loved to watch her grandson participating in the sport) but she loved to shoot pistols. She had quite the reputation for being an excellent shot and was known to outshoot some local law enforcement that would gather to target practice. During their marriage, she and Bennie loved to deer hunt in the fall.

In 101 years of life, Mary Bet saw an unbelievable amount of change. She grew up with very little, yet we can remember her saying that she didn’t know she was poor because everyone she knew was in the same circumstances. She would say that she had a pony, the old work horses, cats and chickens and she lived in a home with her parents, grandparents and a bachelor uncle whom she adored, so she had all she needed. She and Bennie were married less than a year when he went off to the service, but he came back home and they started their life of building a farm and family. He was taken away way too soon and she was a widow for 55 years. The year after Bennie died, her beloved mother passed away. It is easy to look at any life and say how it could have been done differently, but that is fruitless and without any merit. After 101 years Mary - Mary Bet - Betsy is now reunited with those that she has been separated from for so very long and we will rejoice in that.

The family is so appreciative of the amazing staff at the Gower Convalescent Center and Three Rivers Hospice for their dedication and compassion.

Thomas Neil MacPherson, age 75, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 19, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care. He was a proud organ donor and was able to donate his eyes through Saving Sight.&nbsp;

Tom was born on November 8, 1947, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, one of two children to Robert Neil MacPherson and Laura Mae (Young) MacPherson. As a military family, they moved all over the country growing up but ended up back in Atchison where he graduated from high school in 1966. Tom joined the United States Army in 1970, and spent most of his tenure in Korea until his Honorable Discharge in 1974. He returned to the states and pursued a criminal justice psychology degree from Missouri Western in St. Joseph, MO, graduating in 1980. During his years in school, he worked for his best friend, Joe Peltzer at the Warf.

He and Karen Jones were married on October 14, 1981, in Fort Worth, Texas. Tom used his degree to make a full career of Law Enforcement. He joined the Bedford, TX, police department in 1982, where he served as a police officer until he retired in 2005. He had many specialties throughout his career, especially working under cover. After retiring, they returned to Atchison, and he spent his time again with Joe Peltzer at Commercial Vending.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by his wife, Karen MacPherson; his in-laws, Norman G. and June Jones; sister-in-law, Rita (J.D.) Hartman; brother-in-law, Leon (Virginia) Jones; two nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins. He will also be missed by his fur babies, Tom never saw a stray animal he didn’t feed; he even kept treats in his patrol car.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Jerry MacPherson.&nbsp;

A visitation with the family to celebrate Tom’s life will be Monday, June 26, 2023, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Please wear casual attire because Tom wouldn’t want you to be uncomfortable!

Avery James Babineaux, III, was born in El Paso, Texas, on March 10th, 1970, to Mr. &amp; Mrs. Avery James Babineaux, Betty (Ware). He passed from this life on June 15, 2023, at his home in Texas.&nbsp;

A Homegoing service will be Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. His final resting place will be Oak Hill Cemetery in Atchison. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Avery was a devout Christian and served the lord faithfully. He spent many years as an over the road truck driver. Avery enjoyed traveling with his family, spending time with his grandchildren, playing dominoes and rook with his family and friends. He loved listening to music but especially Gospel.&nbsp;

Avery was proceeded in death by his grandparents Mr. &amp; Mrs. Babineaux Sr, an uncle Sammy Wren, a sister Cassandra Harrison, and a nephew Cedric Lofton. &nbsp;He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews. He will be missed by many.&nbsp;

“Scrooge” C. Larry Davison, 83, Fillmore, Missouri; passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care.

Scrooge was born on January 10, 1940 to the late, Joe and Maxine (Brewer) Davison in Fillmore, Missouri. He attended GEE and Brand County Schools and Fillmore High School.&nbsp;

Mr. Davison owned and operated Larry and Troy Davison Construction. He started driving bulldozers when he was 16 until his passing, spanning over sixty-seven years.

Scrooge was very outgoing and personable. He loved people and never knew a stranger.

Charles married Hilda Rutherford on December 7, 1962 in Savannah, Missouri. They celebrated sixty years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda, of the home; son, Troy Davison; brother, Keith Davison (Diana); sister, Carolyn Davison and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Connie Davison.

Mr. Davison was cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where a registration book will be available to sign.

St. Joseph, MO: Phyllis June (Foster) Herbster, a devoted Christian, mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on June 19th, 2023, at the age of 92. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.

Phyllis was born on June 6th,1931, to Leslie E. Foster and Ruby P. Foster. She grew up in Union Star, Missouri, and graduated from Union Star High School in 1949. Phyllis graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in 1967.

On September 21st,1951, she entered into a lifelong union of love and companionship with her beloved husband, Harlan Herbster.

Phyllis dedicated her life to education and nurturing young minds. She began her teaching career at Clanton Rural School, followed by Castle Rural School and St. Joseph South Park School. Her passion for education continued as she taught at King City R1 School until her retirement in 1985.

Throughout her life, Phyllis remained deeply rooted in her faith and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of King City. Her commitment to her spiritual beliefs was an inspiration to those around her.

Phyllis had a joyous spirit and found great pleasure in spending quality time with her family and friends. She had a knack for card and board games, and these gatherings often brought laughter and lasting memories. Sewing was another beloved hobby of Phyllis, and she created countless beautiful quilts alongside her mother, forging a bond that will always be treasured.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Ruby Foster; her loving husband, Harlan Herbster, and her son-in-law, Steve Jennings.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Debbie Jennings (Randy Tannehill), and her grandchildren, Angela Reynolds (Aaron) and Aric Jennings (Kimberly Elder). Her great-grandchildren, Kayton and Kenna Reynolds, brought immeasurable joy to her life. Phyllis is also survived by her brother, Bob Foster (Rose Foster), who shared many special moments with her and sisters-in-law, Geraldyne Herbster and Vonna Herbster.

As we bid farewell to Phyllis, let us remember her as a compassionate woman, a nurturing teacher, and a beloved family member. May her kindness and warmth continue to inspire us all. Her legacy will forever be etched in our hearts.

Beth Eileen (Housh) Williams, 98, of Hoyt, KS, passed away at McCrite Plaza in Topeka on Sunday, June 18, 2023. She was born December 8, 1924, to Roy Valentine Housh and Lucy Mabeth Edmonds at Winchester, Kansas. 

She was preceded in death by her brother, Russell LeRoy Housh, her husband Orion Williams Jr., her second son, Bernard Williams, and a grandson, Daniel Williams.

Beth graduated from Hoyt High School in 1943. She married Orion “Bud” Williams Jr. on September 12, 1944 on the Army Air Force Base at Sioux City, Iowa. She attended Washburn University and was later employed in the business unit of Washburn for over 30 years. She lived most of her life in the Topeka and Hoyt area, apart from seven years spent in Big Bear Lake, California. &nbsp;

She was always active supporting church and community. She and Bud were long-time members of Shooting Stars Square Dance Club. She was a charter member of the Town and Country Home Demonstration Unit in Hoyt, and a longtime member of the Hoyt Study Club. After retirement she was employed part-time at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt for four years. &nbsp;

She is survived by her three remaining sons and their spouses, William (Mary), Bradley (Deborah), and Bruce (Taunya), 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Marie Barton and Marie &amp; Russell’s two sons, Roy and Tony Housh.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church (Mayetta, KS) on Monday, June 26th at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Hoyt Cemetery. Beth will lie in state after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m., followed by visitation until 6:00 p.m.

Lois E. Barton, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 19, 2023.

She was born April 16, 1936 in Maysville, Missouri to Fred and Christina (Goerke) Krull. Lois grew up in Maysville, and attended school in Union Star, Missouri, and then Lafayette High School in St. Joseph.

Lois married Basil E. Barton on October 2, 1953. He survives of the home.

After graduating from Castor’s Beauty School, Lois owned and operated her own beauty shop in the North End for 20 years. She later worked for another beauty shop in St. Joseph after selling her own shop.

Lois was a talented seamstress and excellent wallpaper hanger. In her younger years she enjoyed water skiing and bowling, and she still loved to play cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 70 years, Basil; children, Michael Barton (Becky) and Susie Tymson (Ralph Jr.); grandchildren, Cory Tymson, Tony Barton (April), Zach Tymson, and Aaron Barton (Liz); great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian Barton, Scott and Louise Barton, Tenley and Tatum Frederick; nieces, Linda Pawling (Bill) and Lori Godfrey; and brother-in-law, Gary Godfrey.

Francis E. “Smitty” Schmidt, 86, of Winchester, KS passed away at his home on Monday, June 19, 2023, surrounded by his family. While he was in high school, he joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served in the reserves for nine years. After graduation from high school, he helped his uncle on the farm. Later he went to work for the Leavenworth Steel CO. and then the Don Grandon Steel Co. In 1970, Francis started his own Backhoe Business. He did all kinds of construction work and decided to branch off into laying field tile in 1974. The field tile would drain wet spots in the field and drain the waterways so they could be mowed. This helped farmers to farm most of their ground and raise better crops. Later Smitty started putting in terrace tile outlet systems, this took care the place of waterways and let the farmer have more of his field to farm. Smitty loved visiting and talking to friends and customers. He also opened and closed graves for several area cemeteries. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Eagles in Leavenworth KS. HE enjoyed going out on Saturday evenings dancing. Smitty enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons working and building their business. He was married to Eulaine Noll on June 17, 1958, being married for 65 years this month. She survives of the home. Addition survivors include his children; Alvin (Deanna) Schmidt, Nortonville, KS, Glen (Susan) Schmidt, Atchison, KS, Larry (Dianna) Schmidt, Easton, KS, Terry (Rebecca) Schmidt, Nortonville, KS, a sister Carol Ann Vaughan, Tonganoxie, KS, ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Joseph Laurence Gray, age 100, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023.

Joe was the second oldest of six children, born on August 27, 1922 to Joseph Herman Gray and Laura Ellen (Gallagher) Gray at Sister’s Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Anne Mason Reed, his wife of 66 years, on April 12, 1947.

Together Joe and Anne had eight children: Susan Mastio (Richard) of Carmel California, Reed Gray of Eugene, Oregon, JoAnne Grey (Martin) of St. Joseph, Laura Dunn (R.G.) of Liberty, Missouri, Paul Gray of Lorida, Florida, Mark Gray (Cathy) of Blue Eye, Missouri, Matthew Gray of Columbia, Missouri, and Peter Gray (Staci) of St. Joseph. They were also blessed with 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Anne in 2014, his son Mark, his parents, siblings Paul, Jerry (Ruth), Patricia, and Mary Agnes McGann, and his daughter-in-law Laurie Gray. He is survived by his remaining seven children, and his sister Virginia Grimm (Lou) of Saint Louis, MO.

Joe attended Christian Brothers High School. He worked his way through college and graduated from the first aeronautical engineering class at University of Kansas in 1944. Joining the United States Navy he was sent to Johns Hopkins University for his Masters work in Engineering. Following this Joe went to work for General Toftoy at the Bureau of Ordinance in Annapolis, Maryland. While in the navy, he was assigned to the development of rockets and air-breathing jet propulsion guided missiles in the Mojave desert. He was always tickled that he served in the navy but was never on a ship, in fact he was in the desert most of the time. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of his work, having worked alongside the likes of Werner von Braun.

Though he loved the science of rocket propulsion, the implications of war time use made Joe consider returning to Missouri. So in 1952 Joe decided to come back to St. Joseph and join his father in business. His Dad had been a tire dealer for many years and was a mechanically inclined tinkerer with several patents to his name. He realized that there was no good way to lift a vehicle for tire service and he had some good ideas and concepts he had developed. His Dad realized that he needed some help and some engineering expertise to see his vision move forward. Together, Joe and his father designed the BF-100, a pneumatic bumper jack. This was the beginning of Gray Manufacturing Co. Inc., which was incorporated on April 15, 1952. For the next 70 years Joe led and grew a family business that he was always proud of and truly considered to be his family. Even in his final years Joe tried to walk the shop and office floors and talk to every person he could each and every day, telling them what a good job they were doing and always emphasizing the all-important job of taking care of the customer. Gray Manufacturing continues today under fourth generation family leadership and employment. Today Gray has more than 150 products, 250 plus team members, and sells products all over the world.

In 1974 Joe had the opportunity to make a small acquisition of a machine shop in Emporia, Kansas. This was done simply to preserve a critical part of Gray’s supply chain, as its owners were retiring. This ultimately led to the development of a new start up product line in 1986, under the leadership of Roger Craft, of clamping devices that are used in the automotive and aerospace industries. This new venture became a separate company named Vektek, Inc. Like Gray Manufacturing, Vektek quickly became an industry leader.

Joe’s curious mind was always racing with better ways to make, do, and design things. His ideas were not limited to lifts, jacks, and clamps. A couple of “crazy” ideas (as he called them) he had included a faster way to grow catfish for commercial sales, and a pothole filling machine that would take the place of several machines that road crews used at the time. His frustration he experienced when he used products that he did not like led to one of his many humorous sayings, “the engineer that designed this should be shot”.

Joe had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. When his children were younger there were many family trips to Lake of the Ozarks, and some to Colorado and Padre Island and numerous national parks. As he grew older both he and Anne traveled many of the United States waterways in their boat, the Venture. They also chose some unique destinations centered around eco and adventure tours to include the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Eastern Siberia and the Danube River.

Joe also had many hobbies and interests over his lifetime. He had a voracious appetite for reading, often reading four or five books at a time. He loved hunting and fishing with his friends, and later sharing that love with his sons. He enjoyed classical music. And he played handball for many years, playing with a foursome of friends that eventually totaled over 300 years in age combined.

Over the last 30 years of his life Joe began collecting artwork that was displayed throughout the offices in his companies making it a very warm and unique setting for a manufacturing facility. His primary focus was Native American art and history. His collection inspired numerous public exhibits to support many causes and to simply share his unique collection with the local community.

Joe believed that it was important to serve and give back to the community in which he lived and his business operated. He was Chairman of the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce in 1971 and led the 1972 City Annexation Drive. He also served as County Judge in 1992. Some of the organizations that he supported and served over the years include the Symphony Board, the Allied Arts, the Social Welfare Board, the United Way, the Cancer Society, the Food Kitchen, the YMCA, the St. Joseph Boat and Yacht Club, Audubon Society, Missouri Western State University, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, the American Guild of Organists, the Community Chorus, The St. Joseph Museums, The Patee House Museum, Robidoux Row, The Military Museum and nearly every arts and museum organization in St. Joe. In 2010, Joe won the Missouri State Philanthropy award in the arts. He supported the Jazz Society, the Performing Arts and annually sponsored the Allied Arts Sculpture projects.

Joe attended First Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph and was an active member in the choir for many years. He and his wife valued education and sponsored numerous MWSU students with scholarships and financial support. He was a strong supporter of Missouri Western State University and received an Honorary Degree in Humane Letters in December 2011.

Joe will be missed by so many. Family, friends, his large extended family at Gray Manufacturing and the entire St. Joseph community.

He was grateful for his blessings, celebrated life and love and often commented on the joy he had in living.

The Gray family would like to thank Judy Ryan for her many years as Joe’s friend, “lunch buddy”, vacation planner, runner of errands and official Gray Executive Assistant. Joe often referred to her as his “other daughter at work”. Special thanks to Martha Long Steins. Those that knew Joe, knew that he loved to rate everything in his life on a scale of 1 to 10. On a scale of 1 to 10, Joe Gray lived a full and blessed life and it was a perfect 10!!!

Joseph Laurence Gray, age 100, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023.Joe was the second oldest of six children, born on August 27, 1922 to Joseph Herman Gray and Laura Ellen (Gallagher) Gray at Sister’s Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. He married Anne Mason Reed, his wife of 66 years, on April 12, 1947.Together Joe and Anne had eight children: Susan Mastio (Richard) of Carmel California, Reed Gray of Eugene, Oregon, JoAnne Grey (Martin) of St. Joseph, Laura Dunn (R.G.) of Liberty, Missouri, Paul Gray of Lorida, Florida, Mark Gray (Cathy) of Blue Eye, Missouri, Matthew Gray of Columbia, Missouri, and Peter Gray (Staci) of St. Joseph. They were also blessed with 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.Joe was preceded in death by his wife Anne in 2014, his son Mark, his parents, siblings Paul, Jerry (Ruth), Patricia, and Mary Agnes McGann, and his daughter-in-law Laurie Gray. He is survived by his remaining seven children, and his sister Virginia Grimm (Lou) of Saint Louis, MO.Joe attended Christian Brothers High School. He worked his way through college and graduated from the first aeronautical engineering class at University of Kansas in 1944. Joining the United States Navy he was sent to Johns Hopkins University for his Masters work in Engineering. Following this Joe went to work for General Toftoy at the Bureau of Ordinance in Annapolis, Maryland. While in the navy, he was assigned to the development of rockets and air-breathing jet propulsion guided missiles in the Mojave desert. He was always tickled that he served in the navy but was never on a ship, in fact he was in the desert most of the time. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of his work, having worked alongside the likes of Werner von Braun.Though he loved the science of rocket propulsion, the implications of war time use made Joe consider returning to Missouri. So in 1952 Joe decided to come back to St. Joseph and join his father in business. His Dad had been a tire dealer for many years and was a mechanically inclined tinkerer with several patents to his name. He realized that there was no good way to lift a vehicle for tire service and he had some good ideas and concepts he had developed. His Dad realized that he needed some help and some engineering expertise to see his vision move forward. Together, Joe and his father designed the BF-100, a pneumatic bumper jack. This was the beginning of Gray Manufacturing Co. Inc., which was incorporated on April 15, 1952. For the next 70 years Joe led and grew a family business that he was always proud of and truly considered to be his family. Even in his final years Joe tried to walk the shop and office floors and talk to every person he could each and every day, telling them what a good job they were doing and always emphasizing the all-important job of taking care of the customer. Gray Manufacturing continues today under fourth generation family leadership and employment. Today Gray has more than 150 products, 250 plus team members, and sells products all over the world.In 1974 Joe had the opportunity to make a small acquisition of a machine shop in Emporia, Kansas. This was done simply to preserve a critical part of Gray’s supply chain, as its owners were retiring. This ultimately led to the development of a new start up product line in 1986, under the leadership of Roger Craft, of clamping devices that are used in the automotive and aerospace industries. This new venture became a separate company named Vektek, Inc. Like Gray Manufacturing, Vektek quickly became an industry leader.Joe’s curious mind was always racing with better ways to make, do, and design things. His ideas were not limited to lifts, jacks, and clamps. A couple of “crazy” ideas (as he called them) he had included a faster way to grow catfish for commercial sales, and a pothole filling machine that would take the place of several machines that road crews used at the time. His frustration he experienced when he used products that he did not like led to one of his many humorous sayings, “the engineer that designed this should be shot”.Joe had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. When his children were younger there were many family trips to Lake of the Ozarks, and some to Colorado and Padre Island and numerous national parks. As he grew older both he and Anne traveled many of the United States waterways in their boat, the Venture. They also chose some unique destinations centered around eco and adventure tours to include the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Eastern Siberia and the Danube River.Joe also had many hobbies and interests over his lifetime. He had a voracious appetite for reading, often reading four or five books at a time. He loved hunting and fishing with his friends, and later sharing that love with his sons. He enjoyed classical music. And he played handball for many years, playing with a foursome of friends that eventually totaled over 300 years in age combined.Over the last 30 years of his life Joe began collecting artwork that was displayed throughout the offices in his companies making it a very warm and unique setting for a manufacturing facility. His primary focus was Native American art and history. His collection inspired numerous public exhibits to support many causes and to simply share his unique collection with the local community.Joe believed that it was important to serve and give back to the community in which he lived and his business operated. He was Chairman of the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce in 1971 and led the 1972 City Annexation Drive. He also served as County Judge in 1992. Some of the organizations that he supported and served over the years include the Symphony Board, the Allied Arts, the Social Welfare Board, the United Way, the Cancer Society, the Food Kitchen, the YMCA, the St. Joseph Boat and Yacht Club, Audubon Society, Missouri Western State University, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, the American Guild of Organists, the Community Chorus, The St. Joseph Museums, The Patee House Museum, Robidoux Row, The Military Museum and nearly every arts and museum organization in St. Joe. In 2010, Joe won the Missouri State Philanthropy award in the arts. He supported the Jazz Society, the Performing Arts and annually sponsored the Allied Arts Sculpture projects.Joe attended First Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph and was an active member in the choir for many years. He and his wife valued education and sponsored numerous MWSU students with scholarships and financial support. He was a strong supporter of Missouri Western State University and received an Honorary Degree in Humane Letters in December 2011.Joe will be missed by so many. Family, friends, his large extended family at Gray Manufacturing and the entire St. Joseph community.He was grateful for his blessings, celebrated life and love and often commented on the joy he had in living.The Gray family would like to thank Judy Ryan for her many years as Joe’s friend, “lunch buddy”, vacation planner, runner of errands and official Gray Executive Assistant. John M. Rice, a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on June 17, 2023, at the age of 63. Born on November 2, 1959, in St. Joseph, John was a beloved father and grandfather.

John dedicated 24 years of his life to working as a pressman at Tilco Printing Inc. He enjoyed his current job at the Haven House, where he was known for his kindness and friendly demeanor. An avid baseball fan, John shared his love for the sport through managing and coaching the Tilco Tornadoes for several years.

John enjoyed landscaping, fishing, working in the garage and spending time with his grandchildren.

John will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His memory will live on through the lives of his children and grandchildren, who will continue to cherish the time they spent with him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dolores (Hofmann) Rice.

He is survived by his children, Brandon Rice (Courtney), Jeron VanHoutan (R.W.), Jonathan Rice, Lauren Rice (Grant), and Lindsey Rice; former wife and mother of their children, Lisa Rice; grandchildren, Jerzie, Kylen, Silus, Bodhi, Sunni, and Riot; his sister and best friend, Sandi McCloud, and two other siblings, Linn and Andrew; beloved dog, Kato Rice; multiple nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Kylee Eugene Dixon, 33, of Horton, Kansas chose to be with his Lord and Savior on June 16, 2023.

Kylee was a member of the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. Kylee was born on April 7, 1990, in Topeka, Kansas to Danny Dixon and Pamela (Mayfield) Strecker. &nbsp;

Kylee graduated from Stanberry High School in Stanberry, Missouri in December of 2008. He Joined the Navy before his high school graduation and was quickly shipped to basic training in Chicago, Illinois. From Chicago he went to the Navy’s “A school” in Pensacola, Florida where he graduated with honors as a Cryptology Maintenance Technician in 2009. &nbsp;After completing “A School” he went to Norfolk, Virginia where he completed “C School” with honors in Ancillary Systems in 2011. Kylee attended Strayer University and received a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Concentration in Homeland Security, also in 2011, with a 4.0 GPA. Kylee then boarded the USS Nimitz in Everett, Washington, as an Information Dominance Warfare Specialist.

Kylee was proud to be able serve his Country and was discharged from the United States Navy October 5, 2012, with the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Kylee was currently receiving 100 percent service-connected disability from the Veterans’ Administration. Kylee didn’t know a stranger, if you needed help, he was always there putting others before himself.

Survivors of Kylee Eugene Dixon are his fiancé Azaria Richey, his children: Blake, Paisley, and Zaley. His mother Pamela (Shawn) Strecker, his bonus mother Georganne Dixon, a sister Brandi Carlson, a bonus Sister Shawna Strecker. His maternal grandmother Connie (Kirk) Gries.

Kylee was preceded in death by his father Danny Dixon and his maternal grandfather Gene Mayfield.

Kylee’s ashes will be buried at the VA National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas at a date yet to be determined.

Kylee Eugene Dixon 1990 - 2023

Ralph Edward Vossler passed away on June 16, 2023 following a brief illness at St. Luke’s North in Kansas City, Missouri surrounded by family. He received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick before his death. He was born March 19, 1938 in Glasgow, Missouri the first child of four from Harry and Agnes (Westhues) Vossler. 

He attended school there and graduated from Glasgow High School. Following high school, he pursued his education in aviation mechanics and graduated with a certificate. He immediately went to work for TWA in Kansas City, Missouri in 1956 until retiring in May of 2010. He married Mary Catherine Suttner on May 27, 1967 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, Missouri. Their family was raised in Kansas City until their move to Weston Missouri in 1978.

Ralph was a devoted husband to Mary Kay and father to their two sons; Chris and Daniel. Mary Kay Vossler passed away on February 11, 2018 in North Kansas City, Missouri. 

Ralph is survived by his two sons, Chris Joseph Vossler of Weston, Mo and Daniel Jude Vossler with wife Jamie (Banks) Vossler also of Weston, Missouri. He is also survived by his brother Myrl Vossler and wife Becky Vossler of North Carolina and brother Paul Vossler and wife Barbara Vossler of Glasgow, Missouri. Ralph will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Agnes Vossler along with sister Janice Thompson of Glasgow, Missouri. Ralph was very proud of his 54 year career at TWA/American Airlines. 

He received the prestigious Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award on May 24, 2007. It can be viewed at the downtown airport TWA museum in KCMO. Ralph was a devout Catholic attending Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, Missouri all his life. He was actively involved in church life. His hobbies included tinkering in the garage, tending a garden, watching John Wayne movies but most importantly spending time with family. 

Praying of the rosary will be offered at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, Missouri at 407 Cherry Street on Sunday May 25th, 2023 at 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm. The visitation service is from 1-3 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, Missouri on Monday June 26, 2023 with a graveside service immediately following at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery off County Road P. A church luncheon will be provided back at the parish hall at Holy Trinity in Weston.

Kenneth L. Stewart, 93, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the St. Joseph Senior Living.

Kenneth was born on August 14, 1929, in Seneca, Kansas to Charles and Georgia (Shaeffer) Stewart.

He served in the U.S. Army during Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Wathena United Methodist Church and a 70-year member of the Local Union #579, St, Joseph, Missouri and the American Legion Post #161 and VFW Post #5531 of Wathena, Kansas.

Kenneth married Patricia Ebelmesser on March 14, 1953, in Topeka, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Additional survivors include sons, David C. Stewart (Dina) and James M. “Mike” Stewart both of Wathena, Kansas. Brenda G. Wagner, Kansas City, Missouri. Grandchildren, Christopher Stewart, Barry Stewart, Angela Cochneuer, Kylie Humpert and Alan Stewart. Great-grandchildren, Riley and Rory Stewart, Olive and Quinn Humpert, and Reese Cochneuer and a step-great-grandson, Chase Cochneuer. Nieces and nephews.

Donald J. Reid, 93, of Atchison KS died on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. Cremation is planned according to his wishes with the burial of his cremated remains at a later date in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com. Don was born on Oct. 17, 1929, in Atchison, KS, the son of Harry W. and Loretta E. (Stamper) Reid. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1948. He was a Cattleman and Farmer, and a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison. Don was a past member of the Active Masonic Lodge #158 and the Atchison Elks. He served on the Board of Atchison County CO-OP and the Atchison County Livestock Board. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, camping, welding and worked on several creative metal projects and building four homes. He especially enjoyed his family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was married to Jolene S. Pinder on May 26, 1957, in Effingham, KS. Jolene survives in their home. Additional survivors include two daughters Chaunzey E. Tenbrink, Berryton, KS, and Peggy (Mark) Kistler, Atchison, KS, a sister Marjorie Bruhn, Laguna Woods, CA, four grandchildren Tony (Theresa) Tenbrink and Drew (Kiley) Tenbrink, and Katie and Carrie Kistler, and several great grandchildren. His parents, sister and brother-in-law Betty L and Roy Bahnson, brother-in-law Walter Bruhn and Son-in-law, Steven Tenbrink preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the hospice and in-home care workers that took care of Don at home.

He graduated from Atchison High School in 1948. He was a Cattleman and Farmer, and a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison. Don was a past member of the Active Masonic Lodge #158 and the Atchison Elks. He served on the Board of Atchison County CO-OP and the Atchison County Livestock Board. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, camping, welding and worked on several creative metal projects and building four homes. He especially enjoyed his family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was married to Jolene S. Pinder on May 26, 1957, in Effingham, KS. Jolene survives in their home. Additional survivors include two daughters Chaunzey E. Tenbrink, Berryton, KS, and Peggy (Mark) Kistler, Atchison, KS, a sister Marjorie Bruhn, Laguna Woods, CA, four grandchildren Tony (Theresa) Tenbrink and Drew (Kiley) Tenbrink, and Katie and Carrie Kistler, and several great grandchildren. His parents, sister and brother-in-law Betty L and Roy Bahnson, brother-in-law Walter Bruhn and Son-in-law, Steven Tenbrink preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the hospice and in-home care workers that took care of Don at home.<figure>

Bryce Daniel Pruett, 37, King City, MO, formerly of Lancaster, KS, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, MO. He was attending the Christian Community Church, King City, MO with his family. Bryce loved livestock and animals, horseback riding, having grown up at the Atchison Sale Barn. He was a member of the Lancaster Saddle Club and participated in FFA and Sound Masters in High School. Bryce had a big personality which matched his stature, he absolutely loved spending time with his kids, family, and friends. Bryce married Lorann Brewer on October 13, 2012; she survives of the home. He is also survived by his children, Lillian, Kylee and JW Pruett of the home, his parents Dan and Kim Pruett, Lancaster, KS, Shelley Pruett and Jim Buttron, Lancaster, KS, sister Emily and JR Bare, Lancaster, KS, step brother Cowen and Dani Otte, Atchison, KS, step sister, Myka and Steven Sinclair, Everest, KS, grandmothers Melva Harrison and Nancy Wells, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Alice Ann Morgan passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023, in her home in Savannah MO, surrounded by family and friends. Alice was born to Horace and Jenny Perry on January 12, 1936 in Andrew County, MO. She moved to Denver Colorado and married Charles Perry Morgan on August 29, 1957.

Alice spent the early years in Denver as a devoted wife and mother, raising three children and fostering countless others. She was involved in church, boy scouts and campfire girls, home room mom, Sunday school teacher and eventually a grandmother and Great Grandmother. In 1989 Charles retired, and they were able to fulfill their dream to travel. A few years ago she traveled to Antarctica, completing her wish to “walk on every continent.” They remained full-time RVer’s for many years, traveling throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico. They eventually moved to Savannah, and continued traveling, often working as campground hosts and volunteering along the way.

Survivors include her husband Charles Morgan, Children Rebecca and Perry, Grandchildren Halley, Kaleb, Ariel, Brandon and Chloe, Great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Joy Morgan Wardlow and sister Marth Burks. In leu of flowers, donations can be made to the Savannah Senior Center in her name. &nbsp;

Robert Nickels, 84, of Rosendale passed away Sunday, June 11th, 2023 in St. Joseph. He was born February 7th, 1939 to Curtis &amp; Ida (Davison) Nickels. He married Margaret Ann "Maggie" Nickels and she preceded him in death in 2016. &nbsp;

Bob was a lifelong resident of Rosendale, Missouri. He spent his early career as an over-the-road truck driver and then worked for many years on a farm. He continued working in retirement and liked to stay busy and have things to do. He was loved and respected by his close-knit group of friends that he considered his family. &nbsp;

Graveside inurnment will be 10:00am, Saturday, July 8th, 2023 at Bennett Lane Cemetery north of Savannah, MO. Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah, MO is in charge of local arrangements.

Robert Nickels 1939 - 2023

Tom Pankiewicz, 75, of St. Joseph, MO passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 at his home with his wife by his side.&nbsp;

Tom was born on October 8, 1947 to Francis and Josephine (Klein) Pankiewicz. He attended St. Peter and Paul grade school where he was also an active server at the church. He went on to attend and graduate from Christian Brothers High School. After high school, Tom attended St. Joseph Junior College and later graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a teaching degree in English.&nbsp;

Tom’s teaching career began at Bishop O’Hara High School in Kansas City, MO. At this time he began working towards his masters degree in English Education at UMKC. He returned to St. Joseph and began teaching English at Benton High School.&nbsp;

During his time at Benton, Tom taught hundreds of students, coached cross country, and most importantly, met the love of his life, a fellow teacher just down the hall, Cathy Gallagher.&nbsp;

Tom and Cathy’s whirlwind courtship took them on a Northwest Alumni trip to Switzerland in 1976. On Chapel Bridge over the River Reuss, Tom proposed. One year later on June 11, 1977, Tom and Cathy married at the Co-Cathedral in St. Joseph. Soon after, they became active members in what would become their permanent parish home, St. Francis Xavier. There Tom served as a lector, parish council member and president, and was one of the first covenanted members of the Companions of the Precious Blood.&nbsp;

Tom and Cathy were blessed with 5 children: Julia (1978), James (1980), Mary (1985), Melanie (1989), and Christopher (1991). Their home was not only full of children. Tom’s kind and gentle heart could never say no to the endless stream of needy creatures he and Cathy would bring home.&nbsp;

After spending 30+ years at Benton, Tom retired and moved to Missouri Western State University where he continued to teach English for the next decade.&nbsp;

One of Tom’s many passions was traveling. According to one of Tom’s many journal entries, his idea of happiness was being lost in Europe on a cobblestone street with his wife. Over the years their travels took them to numerous countries across Europe.&nbsp;

Tom was an avid reader, writer, and scholar. He surrounded himself in his home with books, journals, and items that held memories close to his heart. Tom enjoyed walking down Ashland pondering the day’s questions- both big and small.&nbsp;

Tom’s other big passion was the Prairie Lands Writing Project. He was a mentor to writing teachers all over the region. Throughout his years, he inspired educators by transforming their teaching and encouraging a new approach to creative writing in the classroom. His love of writing was contagious.&nbsp;

His retirement brought him the joy of grandchildren and allowed him the time to serve others through the Open Door Food Kitchen and the House of Bread.&nbsp;

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Josephine, as well as twin brothers, John and Joseph.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by his wife, Cathy, his children, Julia (Emma), James, Mary (Ryan), Melanie (Kyle), Christopher (Kelsey), his siblings, Margaret (Robert), Michael (Teresa), Theodore, and Marilyn, and his grandchildren, Savannah, Sofia, Felix, Patrick, and Louisa.&nbsp;

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023 at St. Francis Xavier Church. A rosary will be said at 5:30 with a visitation to follow from 6:00-8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Xavier is scheduled for Friday, June 23, 2023 at 10:00 am.&nbsp;
