George C. Wilhelm 1948 - 2025

George C. Wilhelm, 76, of Hiawatha, KS died Saturday, Feb 15, 2025 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City surrounded by his immediate family. He was born in August 29, 1948 to Lee and Dorothy (Richardson) Wilhelm at Denver, CO. He married Sharon Inman on July 5, 1968. From this union 4 children were born.  

George graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education. He graduated from Kansas State University with his Master’s of Science degree. He began and ended his teaching career of over 30 years at Hiawatha USD 415. During his time at the school, he touched many lives. He was a referee for basketball, part of the chain gang for football, and helped coach many summer league softball teams. He was president of the Hiawatha Jaycees in 1975- 76.  He enjoyed bowling, fishing, researching his family genealogy, writing a children’s book, and building and teaching about model rockets. He loved all things about science including astronomy.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Sharon of the home, his brothers Chuck (Dee) Wilhelm, Jim (Linda) Wilhelm, sister Sylvia (Kim) Vance, children George Shannon (Laurie) Wilhelm of San Tan Valley, AZ, Dion Wilhelm of Lynnwood, WA, Danielle (Jeff) Berning of Albany, MO, Dr. Heather (Jared) Morrison of Topeka, KS, 15 grandchildren which were his pride and joy and 13 great-grandchildren. 

A Celebration of George’s eternal life is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Shane Spangler will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to services Thursday.
