Tyson Foods has planted a garden in open space behind its St.
Joseph facility.

Tyson announced it planted a three-acre community garden this
spring to grow fresh vegetables for its employees. The first sweet corn harvest
took place last week. More than 10,000 ears of corn are expected to be gathered
this year, enough to provide 15-20 ears to each employee and their families.

“The community
garden is great for both the environment and our team members,” St. Joseph plant
manager Brian
Wikel said in a written statement released by the company. “We’re honored to
share these fresh vegetables with our hard-working team members. They help to
put protein on tables across America each day; we’ve enjoyed adding something to
theirs.”

Some employees visited the
garden before or after their shift. Others are visiting on their off days.
Those physically unable to make it to the garden will be provided produce.

Tyson plans to expand the
garden next year, planning to add a pumpkin patch and corn maze in 2022.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman for an alleged battery.

On Friday, police arrested 43-year-old Alisha L. Marshall, 43, Atchison, on requested charges of criminal damage to property and battery at a home in the 300 block South 22nd Street, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Police released no additional details. She is no longer in custody.

St. Joseph's American Rescue Plan citizens committee has finished its weeks long work of reviewing proposals on how to spend the city's allotment of more than $39 million in federal COVID-19 relief.

That committee will now present its work to the St. Joseph city council at a Monday work session.

St. Joseph city manager Bryan Carter says the committee finished reviewing applications and proposals this past Tuesday.

"It should have a broad impact on some of our communities' needs," Carter said on KFEQ's The Hotline. "In fact, we have scheduled a work session to present their recommendation to the city council this upcoming Monday. So, we'll do that there."

The American Rescue Plan Committee was formed earlier this year to review applications from entities and individuals who are eligible to receive this federal funding.

The job of the committee, Carter says, is to recommend what they believe are the best ways to allocate the $39 million.

"We'll be working in an obligation to make sure those funds are spent in accordance with federal guidelines," Carter said. "But, we'll also be including some provisions with each recipient that generally make sure that the funds are distributed in a way that achieves the objective. To make sure these funds have the impact on the community that they're envisioned to have."

Any business, entity or household within the city that has been negatively impacted by the&nbsp; pandemic was eligible to apply for this funding. The money can also go toward water, sewer and broadband infrastructure as well.

The city has until the end of 2024 to allocate all of this money. St. Joseph has already received the first half of its $39 million allotment. The second half will come as early as May or as late as July of 2022.

Carter says projects funded by the American Rescue Plan will start being worked on very soon.

"From a functional standpoint, the earliest point we're probably looking at is 6-8 weeks away," he said. "However, with each project, I would anticipate there will be disbursements over time to make sure the funds are used for the stated purposes."

Monday's work session is scheduled for 4 p.m. at city hall.

St. Joseph City Council holding Monday work session with American Rescue Plan committee

More and more businesses might require employees to get
vaccinated against the coronavirus now that the FDA has given full approval of
the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President Patt Lilly expects
several businesses to begin issuing vaccine mandates.

“I do believe, and I’m beginning to hear more and more from
the business community, that they will begin mandating the vaccine,” Lilly
tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “Obviously, Mosaic took this
position just recently. Tyson, which has a facility here in town, made that
determination several weeks ago.”

Lilly expects other businesses to follow suit.

The FDA approved the coronavirus vaccines from Pfizer,
Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson on an emergency basis. It has now given full
approval of the Pfizer vaccine and is expected soon to do the same with the
Moderna vaccine.

Lilly says the move by Mosaic and Tyson falls in line with a trend
nationally.

“Much of it will be around, I think, the issue of industries or
businesses that have an issue either with health, as is the case of Mosaic, or
the issue of food safety, as in the issue of Tyson, but I think this is likely
to spread,” Lilly says.

Lilly says small businesses might be more reluctant to mandate
vaccinations, either because they worry about losing employees or they are run
by owners who believe vaccinations need to be an individual decision.

Lilly says requiring employees get vaccinated makes business sense
for many companies.

“If you’re interacting with the public and you’re not taking
steps to make sure that the people who are interacting with the public are
safe, that becomes in and of itself very problematic,” according to Lilly.

Full approval of Pfizer vaccine could prompt business vaccine mandate

The Savannah School District is in search of a new mascot, and it is calling on the communtiy for help.

The Savannah School Board <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/db776f1c-5c82-46d3-9192-5fb6a33525ca">voted in April </a>to retain the “Savage” nickname, but discard the Native American imagery and symbolism associated with the mascot.

A mascot design contest will begin today and run through October 22nd.  

Communications Director Jess Gillett says the mascot is more then a visual image.

"The mascot is more then just a picture to be used as a district, it's really something that unifies our whole community," Gillett tells St Joseph Post. "So we want everybody to have a hand in that and feel like they had a chance to play a part in that, so this is kind of the best way to do that and try to get people excited about it."

Students, faculty, alumni and the Savannah communtiy are all eligible to enter.

Gillett says while the mascot represents the current students, alumni has always been important. 

"Savannah has always been a place of pride, and the alumni carry a lot of that school pride along with them" says Gillett.

And with that school pride comes a various amount of talents.

"Also going through this process, we have several alumni who are graphic designers, artists, who are in related fields, and they have reached out and they're excited to help be a part of the process" Gillett adds.

Entrants can work in teams as well as individually and multiple entries are allowed.  You can find the form to enter the contest with this story on stjoepost.com, you can also find the form at the Savannah school.

Gillett says once the contest ends, the process to decide the winner will have many layers.

"We will work very closely with our current high school students, they will have a voice in kind of the narrowing down process," Gillett says. And then from there the school district will invite the community and all of its students to work together to narrow it down to the top pick. NODAWAY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 1a.m. Saturday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Kawasaki Mule driven by Dakota G. Leeper, 22, Graham, was northbound on Route ZZ one mile north of Graham.

The utility vehicle traveled off the west side of the road into a ditch and overturned. Two occupants in the bed of the vehicle were ejected.

A private vehicle transported Cole B. Alloway, 21, Maitland, to Mosaic in Maryville. Nodaway County EMS transported Brianna I. Erazo, 22, Independence, to Mosaic in Maryville. Leeper was not injured.

It was a great time to be at the Missouri State Fair last week, with Missouri celebrating it's 200th anniversary of being a state.&nbsp; KFEQ was able to talk with Garrett Hawkins, the President of the MO Farm Bureau at the Fair and ask him what he loves about the fair.&nbsp; He said he pretty much likes everything, but has great childhood memories of being at the fair with his grandparents.

It was MO Farm Bureau day and Hawkins talked about the support and connection the Farm Bureau has had with the fair for decades.&nbsp; MO Farm Bureau celebrates farm families on their day at the state fair.&nbsp; They highlight a farm family from each county in the state of Missouri.

MO Farm Bureau was handing out stickers at the fair that said, <a href="https://mofb.org/dont-tax-death-2/">"Don't Tax Death"</a>.&nbsp; It was to raise awareness of the changes that the Biden administration is attempting to make to the tax code, making it harder for families to pass on their farm to the next generation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Missouri Farm Bureau's Garrett Hawkins talks Missouri State Fair, farm families and taxes

St. Joseph public schools could become entangled in a lawsuit
filed by the Missouri Attorney General which attempts to prevent the Columbia
School District from imposing a mask mandate.

Attorney General Eric Schmitt has filed suit against Columbia
schools, seeking a court ruling to prevent the district from requiring masks in
the classroom.

St. Joseph School Superintendent Doug Van Zyl understands the
Attorney General is taking aim at all districts, including St. Joseph, that
require masks.

“Just my personal opinion, it’s a little disappointing,” Van
Zyl tells St. Joseph Post. “I believe that Missouri is a local control state
and I think communities and towns and cities and school districts have had that
ability over the years and to make an adjustment in that now I think could
create some challenges down the road.”

Van Zyl says the St. Joseph School Board voted 5-to-1 to
require students, staff, and visitors wear masks when in school buildings to
prevent the spread of the coronavirus. He says the board acted after reviewing
recent coronavirus case trends and consulting with Mosaic Life Care health
officials.

The board is scheduled to review the policy September 13th
to determine if the mandate should be extended.

Van Zyl defends the school board decision from a practical
standpoint as well, pointing out the requirement kept a case of COVID-19 from
spreading beyond the one student who tested positive.

“Had they not had masks on you’d be talking about 30, 40, 50
other students having to quarantine, but since masks were in place, only the positive
student had to quarantine,” according to Van Zyl. “So, to me that has a big
impact on a lot of students and their ability to learn and be involved in our
schools and the learning process.”

Van Zyl says he won’t say the move by Schmitt, who is running
for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, is politically motivated.

“But I think in general it seems like a lot of things from
vaccinations to masking to quarantining all seem to be a political football
that gets tossed back and forth, rather than just good open honest discussion
and taking a look at the information and the facts that are out there.”

The lawsuit filed against Columbia is a class action suit that
would apply to any Missouri school district requiring masks.

It has even drawn the attention of the White House. President Joe Biden's press secretary
said during a briefing that Biden finds such lawsuits unacceptable and has told
his education secretary to use all his authority to help school districts
protect students across the country.&nbsp;

St. Joseph in crosshairs of AG lawsuit against school mask mandates

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges following an arrest.

On Friday police arrested Michael W. Ashford, 53, St. Joseph, on a State of Missouri warrant for parole violation, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Ashford has previous convictions for aggravated assault and DUI, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He is being held in the Atchison County Jail.

The loss of a spouse or loved one is hard on anyone, and Grief Share aims to help.

The Loss of a Spouse seminar, an introductory seminar to the Grief Share program, will be held Sunday at Brookdale Church in St. Joseph.

Program volunteer Mary Noel Owens found the program when she lost her first husband. It helped her through the grief. She returned to the program in 2017 after losing her second husband. . .

"I can't even begin to tell you how much it helped me, to find people that are going through the same thing you are, that really understand where you are is such a great help because you feel so alone," Owens says. "And then you meet this group, and suddenly you have somebody else that really understands where you are."

Grief Share has helped many over the years to get through the pain of losing a loved one, and find joy on the other side of the loss through a 13-week program.

Volunteer leader Debbie Lyons says the title of the book used in the program is "Your journey from mourning to joy." Lyons says while joy seems impossible, it is possible.

"It's hard to believe that you can find joy going through a mourning process, a grieving process," Lyons says. "But i'm here to tell you after three years, you can find joy, it's hard work, it takes a lot of time, it's very lonely, but yet we have a tribe of support."

An introduction to the Grief Share seminar, called Loss of a Spouse, will begin on Sunday afternoon at two o’clock at the Brookdale Church in St. Joseph.

ANDREW COUNTY—A Missouri man died in an accident just before 1p.m. Thursday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Ford F150 driven by Jean M. Smith, 63, St.&nbsp; Joseph, was entering U.S. 169 from a private driveway two miles south of Rochester.

The Ford F150 struck the passenger side of a northbound Ford F350 driven by Michael L. Peterson, 57, Shelbyville. After impact the F350 crossed the center line, started to skid, overturned and the driver was ejected.

Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Meirhoffer Funeral Home.

 Andrew County EMS transported to passengers in the F350&nbsp; Gary Mayhall, 56, Shelby, Nebraska and Montgomery P. Hightshoe, 37, Paris, Mo., to Mosaic Life Care. Smith was released at the scene. The driver and passengers in the F350 were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

Police: Kansas woman injured after 2-car crash

A longtime law enforcement officer in the Platte County
Sheriff’s Office has taken over running the Law Enforcement Academy at Missouri
Western State University.

Commander Joseph King comes to the post after serving in
Platte County for 24 years, 10 as a division commander. He accepted the
position after retiring from the force. King steps into the commander position
after teaching at the academy for 21 years.

“For me, it’s an energizing opportunity. I’ve been a law
enforcement trainer, like I said, for 21 years,” King tells St. Joseph Post. “So,
I’m really interested in helping get the right people to the agencies to serve
the communities the best.” 

The Law Enforcement Academy on the St. Joseph campus serves
both independent students looking for a job in law enforcement as well as
members of local jurisdictions seeking additional training. Most of the cadets
come from regional law enforcement agencies.

The academy has about 20 students this semester.

Changes in law enforcement, from cultural changes to changes
in law, are very much a part of the instruction provided cadets at academy.

King says it’s important for the academy and its students to
keep up with change.

“When there are things changing, the fact that I’ve already
been doing it, it’s oftentimes a big change for me, though it may not be really
for them,” King says. “And I’ve always argued that the most successful people
in this line of work are the ones that can be flexible to the things that
change.”

King says while change must be acknowledged, he doesn’t want
cadets bogged down with things they have no control over.

“The idea is when we raise our hand, we swear an oath to
perform at a certain level and to enforce certain laws,” King says. “I didn’t
write the laws. I’m going to do my job as I professed to do it, regardless of
what the law is at the moment.”

New Law Enforcement Academy leader says cadets must adapt to change

A six-year-old St. Joseph boy suffered minor injuries when a
car ran over his bike at a south end intersection, then fled the scene.

The crash occurred around seven o’clock last night at
the intersection of King Hill Avenue and West Hyde Park Avenue. The car hit the
bicycle as the boy attempted to cross the street.

St. Joseph police say a 27-year-old St. Joseph man was
arrested shortly afterward. He faces the charges of driving while intoxicated
and leaving the scene of an accident.

NW Missouri couple hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

The Missouri Department of Conservation is showing off snakes at Krug Park Thursday.

A free program will educate people about Missouri snakes, and the role they play in the ecological system.

Bill Graham with the Department of Conservation says people have an unfounded fear of snakes, and the hope is that this program will help qualm those fears, as well as educate those who are curious.

"We want this program to be for those that want to work on their fear about snakes, if you know more about them," Graham says. "But, also many people are just simply curious about snakes. They've seen them, they're unusual, snakes come in a wide variety of colors sizes, they can do interesting things."

Graham says people should know most snakes in Missouri are harmless, but that doesn't mean they should be handled.

"Any snake doesn't like to be picked up and handled to much," Graham tells St. Joseph Post. "Some of them you can pick up and handle very easily, some of them you can pick up and they might take a bite at you and scare the heck out of you, even though it's just teeth, it's not going to be any serious big deal."

Graham says that while most snakes are harmless, there are a few poisonous snakes around Missouri. But, he reiterates that if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone.

The program will bring a lot of information about snakes, ranging from how wide their mouths can open, to how many bones are in their bodies. It will also provide a safe, up-close look at the creatures.

"Our MDC naturalist Shelby Smith will also have some local snakes, I'm not sure what species, but she'll have three or four snakes there that people can look at up close, I don't know if they're going to be handled or not, but they'll for get a close look and a safe look," Graham added.

MO Department of Conservation offering free snake program in St. Joseph Thursday

A Buchanan County man has been found guilty of felony meth possession charges.

A jury found 60-year-old Lee Allen Haneline guilty on Tuesday in Division III of the Buchanan County Circuit Court - Judge Patrick Robb presiding.

 Haneline was charged with possession of meth in Buchanan County in May 2020. He was found by the court to be a prior and persistent felony offender under Missouri law.

Sentencing is set for October 15th. Haneline&nbsp;faces the possibility of an enhanced punishment range by the court.

Buchanan County man found guilty of felony possession of meth

The Doniphan County Health Department will be offering an additional shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Clinic Supervisor Sheryl Pierce says the shot will be made available to immuno-compromised individuals who will be able to get the shot when they walk into the clinic.

"We don't need a letter from the doctor, a note from the doctor," Pierce says. "If they come in and say they meet those guidelines, we will be able to administer an additional, this is not considered a booster dose, this is an additional dose of Moderna."

The Pfizer vaccine will also be available.

The additional shot will be available to walk-ins at the clinic. Doniphan County health officials have extended clinic hours, hoping demand will increase.

"Our open clinics for vaccines, and that means they can just walk in without an appointment, will be every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 and 1:30 to 4:30," Pierce says.

Pierce adds that if you can't make it at those times, you can still make an appointment.

"Those are just going to be walk in clinic times, if you absolutely can non come on those days, give us a call and we'll try to work you in another day." Pierce says.

Doniphan County health officials are hopeful with recent FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine, vaccination rates will rise.

"Well I certainly hope we do," Pierce tells St. Joseph Post. "You know our vaccination rates fairly low in our county compared to the state, so we're hoping this will prompt more people to get the vaccine."

"The FDA approval is for 16 and over, we still have our 12 to 15 year olds and we will still be able to administer the Pfizer vaccine under the Emergency Use Authorization."

Walk in clinics at the Health Department are on Wednesdays with new extended hours from 9:30- 11:30 am and 1:30- 4:30 pm where vaccine doses will be available.

A new effort is underway to get community input into the
future of St. Joseph public schools.

St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President Patt Lilly says
discussions have been underway for months about the direction of the school
district, discussions that began among members of the Chamber board after the
overwhelming defeat of the school bond issue in April.

“The truth is that the success of the school district is the
number one issue with the business community in St. Joseph,” Lilly tells host
Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

The Chamber and Mosaic Life Care will pay for a consultant to
begin asking community members what they want from their school district.

St. Joseph School District voters in April soundly defeated a $107
million dollar school bond issue. Three incumbents also on the ballot also lost
their seats on the school board.

Lilly says the bond issue campaign got off on the wrong foot.

“If you start the discussion with, okay, we have to close a
high school. Well, that immediately sets off a polarizing discussion, but more
importantly, why?”

The bond issue would have paid to convert the former American
Family Insurance regional headquarters into a into a second high school to go
along with a refurbished Central High School.

Under the proposal, Benton High School and Lafayette High
School would have been turned into middle schools as the district ended the
three-high school model in favor of a new two-high school model.

More than 64% if the voters cast ballots against the plan.

Lilly says the consultants plan to work with a large committee
to speak with St. Joseph residents about what they want in a school district.
He expects the process to take at least a year, perhaps a year-and-a-half.&nbsp; He says the school board will ultimately make
the decision, based on the input provided.

Lilly says the devastating defeat at the polls in April sent a
very difficult message to the St. Joseph School Board.

“The trust with the school district really has been broken,”
Lilly says. “I think, in some ways, unfairly. But that’s a topic for another
day. That’s just the reality. There’s not a lot of trust with the school
district or the board.”

Lilly says though the Chamber and Mosaic are footing the bill,
they will not be driving the conversation. Lilly says the consultants will take
their time, talk to city residents, and begin forming a plan to present to the
St. Joseph School Board.

St. Joseph residents to be asked about future of school district

St. Joseph suffered a decline in population over the last ten years according to the US Census Bureau.

Corey Mihalik of the Missouri census data center says the decline in St. Joseph was slight, 5.6 percent or about forty three hundred people . 

"Which is kind of unusual," says Mihalik. "And as much as most urban centers saw population increases and rural areas saw population decreases, so that's kind of one the intersting cases around the state, in that it's one of the major cities that we actually saw a population decline rather than an increase."

But Mihalik says it's not because people are moving away from the area, but because fewer people have children.

"What we were seeing is that the declines are much larger in the under 18 population than the over 18 population," Mihalik says. "So a lot of the decline in population is more due to the, we assume here, people not having children rather than actual migratory changes."

Mihalik says both Andrew and Buchanan counties were a part of that trend.  Andrew county saw gains in population up 4.8%, while Buchanan County saw drops of 4.9%.

BY MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostSt. Joseph suffered a decline in population over the last ten years according to the US Census Bureau.Corey Mihalik of the Missouri census data center says the decline in St. Joseph was slight, 5.6 percent or about forty three hundred people . "Which is kind of unusual," says Mihalik. "And as much as most urban centers saw population increases and rural areas saw population decreases, so that's kind of one the intersting cases around the state, in that it's one of the major cities that we actually saw a population decline rather than an increase."But Mihalik says it's not because people are moving away from the area, but because fewer people have children."What we were seeing is that the declines are much larger in the under 18 population than the over 18 population," Mihalik says. "So a lot of the decline in population is more due to the, we assume here, people not having children rather than actual migratory changes."Mihalik says both Andrew and Buchanan counties were a part of that trend. Andrew county saw gains in population up 4.8%, while Buchanan County saw drops of 4.9%.

St. Joseph police are looking for two suspects in a shooting
late last night that sent a man in his 40s to the hospital, suffering
multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say the wounds, while serious, do not appear to be
life-threatening. He was taken to Mosaic Life Care’s St. Joseph hospital.

Police report officers responded to a shooting in the 400
block of Kemper Street shortly before midnight. The victim is described as a
black male in his 40s. Witnesses gave officers descriptions of two possible
suspects, both black males ages in the 30s or 40s, dressed in all black
clothing.
