A special evening
Tuesday will raise money for the Freudenthal Center and its fight against
Parkinson’s Disease.

Freudenthal Center
Executive Director, Stephanie Stewart, says the Unite &amp; Fight Gala at
Stoney Creek Inn is one of two big fundraisers for the center.

“The whole idea is
that we want to unite with these folks that have Parkinson’s and fight the
disease,” Stewart says during her visit to KFEQmmunity. “And that’s been our
goal since we started the program in December of 2018 was to help people with
Parkinson’s fight the disease through exercise and through getting together and
helping one another.”

Boxing has become
a favorite exercise as the Freudenthal Center in East Hills Mall. 

“Just something
about taking your aggression out on that big, black bag that really does get
people moving, absolutely. So, boxing is very, very popular,” Stewart says. “We
have another program called BAM which is Big Amplitude Movement. A lot of folks
with Parkinson’s, they’re movements get very small. And so, that class in
particular is about getting their movements bigger.”

Stewart says the
exercise isn’t as important as the attitude. She says Freudenthal works to give
participants exercises they will stick with, even those who haven’t made
exercise a part of their normal day-to-day life.

“So, if you’re
just starting out and you really kind of need to get into it and you haven’t
done a whole lot of exercise, you can kind of let up just a little bit and not
push it as hard,” Stewart says. “But once you get going and once you’ve been to
the classes for several months, we expect you to kind of push it and make it a
little harder on yourself and don’t take as many breaks as you maybe took when
you first started out, because that’s just going to make your life better.”

A fairly new
program will be featured at the gala. It is called the Loud Crowd, an effort to
fight a disturbing effect of Parkinson’s in which those fighting the disease
get increasingly quieter.

The Freudenthal
Center in the East Hills Mall provides its programs for free. To be able to
continue that practice, the center needs to raise money. The United &amp; Fight
Gala helps. Individual tickets sell for $50 a person. Several area businesses provide
sponsorships. Doors open at 5pm on Tuesday at Stoney Creek Inn with an Italian buffet
by Luna’s Catering served at 5:15pm. The program starts at 6pm.

outdoors for more than 40 years. He has served as a hunting and fishing guide
longer than that.

Very soon, Fred Ramsay of St. Joseph will
be inducted into the Outdoor Hall of Fame. He calls it a tremendous honor.

“You look at who’s there. It’s Harold Ensley,
Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, Bill Jordan. I mean, in my world, it’s
the outdoor who’s who,” Ramsay tells KFEQmmunity. “They must be at the bottom
of the barrel to get me that’s the only thing I can tell you.”

Ramsay will be inducted during a ceremony
at the John A. and Genny Morris Conservation Center in Springfield next
Saturday, August 16th.

Ramsay has just recently been honored by
the Waterfowler Hall of Fame in Mound City.

Ramsay, who grew up in Oregon, Missouri,
says he has had a great time the past 40-plus years broadcasting about the
outdoors and taking various people on hunting and fishing trips, many athletes
and celebrities.

“It’s not the outdoor world. It’s the
people that I have met and been around all these years. I’ve never sought out
any of these people,” Ramsay says. “They somehow fell into my life, which is
great.”

Ramsay began his broadcasting career on
KFEQ. He broadcast a syndicated TV show for years. Ramsay now has an outdoor
show on WHB in Kansas City.

Ramsay remains in love with the outdoors
and describes his perfect day.

“Clear blue sky. Thirty degree high. Wind
in the north, in my duck blind with the heater on,” Ramsay says with a laugh. “That’s
the perfect day. It’s an amazing, amazing sport.”

Ramsay says he couldn’t believe it when
the founder of the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame, Garry Mason, gave him
a call to break the news to him.

CLINTON COUNTY —Four people were injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Thursday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 28-year-old St. Joseph man was northbound on County Road 145 at MO 116 six miles west of Plattsburg.

The driver failed to stop at the stop sign. A westbound 2021 Chevy Silverado driven by a 42-year-old Platt City man struck the passenger side of the Jeep.

Tri-County ambulance transported both drivers, a 42-year-old man and a 1-year-old girl, both passenger in the pickup, to Mosaic Life Care.&nbsp; The MSHP had incomplete seat belt usage information. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

3 adults, 1-year-old hospitalized after pickup, Jeep crash

HOLT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Thursday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Ford F350 driven by a 37-year-old Macon, Georgia, man was northbound on U.S. 59 at 3rd Street in Craig. The Ford struck an eastbound 2015 Chevy 2500 driven by a 24-year-old Oregon, Missoui man, who had just turned north onto U.S. 59.

After impact the Chevy traveled off the road and struck a telephone pole.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported the Ford driver to Mosaic Life Care. The Chevy driver was not wearing a seat belt and not transported for treatment, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Driver hospitalized in St. Joe after trucks collide 

BUCHANAN COUNTY — A St. Joseph man died in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Thursday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Colorado driven by an 83-year-old St. Joseph man was attempting to merge onto northbound Interstate 29 from southbound U.S. 71 seven miles north of St. Joseph. Upon entering Interstate 29, the pickup made an abrupt left turn into the path of a 2024 Cadillac driven by a 64-year-old Merriam, Kansas woman.&nbsp; The Cadillac struck the drivers side of the Chevy. After impact the Chevy overturned.

Andrew County EMS transported both drivers to Mosaic Life Care where the St. Joseph man was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

St. Joseph man dies in 2-vehicle I-29 crash

Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western State University has shown fans a number of explosive downfield plays from the Kansas City Chiefs offense 

Patrick Mahomes says it's not just because it's training camp you're seeing those types of plays either 

"We've got the guys that can make the contested catches, I think y'all have seen that out here, and we've told them we're going to give them a chance and they've got to prove to us that they can make those plays and they're proving that," Mahomes tells reporters after practice.  "Coach Reid has been adamant about pushing the ball, trying to make plays happen, and we’ve been having success with it and the goal is to keep that going throughout the regular season." 

Saturday will mark the first NFL action for several rookies and first year players on this squad 

Mahomes, who was once in those shoes, says they just need to go out there and do what they've done all training camp 

"Obviously it's going to be a bigger stage, you're going up against another team, but I think Coach Reid prepares us better than anybody else in the league to go out there and play your best football and that's because we practice hard, we practice fast, so when you get to the game it's not that huge step up, it's a step up for sure, but it's not that huge step up," Mahomes explains.  "So go out there like you practice, have the right mindset, and just play fast and let the rest handle itself." 

Head Coach Andy Reid says for the first game, the rotation will be typical, with Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter, Gardner Minshew in the second, and so on.  

Working with nearly an entirely new offensive line, Reid is prepared to play his number one unit for more drives than usual, but says 

We’ll see how it goes. I’ll play that by ear, but you know probably not more than a quarter," Reid says 

The Chiefs and Cardinals kickoff on Saturday at 7pm, pregame will air at 6 on Q Country 92.7 

Kansas City has just three more practices in St. Joseph remaining, returning to MoWest on Monday with practice at 10:15.

Nearing end of time in St. Joseph, Chiefs ready for first preseason game Saturday

A school bond issue approved by Buchanan County R-IV voters in April has been approved again, this time with even more support.  

The bond issue originally passed in April had to return to the ballot in August, due to a filing error by the Buchanan County Clerk's office. It passed Tuesday with 92% support.  

School Superintendent, Travis Dittemore, says the district is thrilled with the results, especially since the district has never dealt with an August election. 

"You know we're not in school that time of year, not quite yet, and people are busy with their summers and their vacations, so we didn't really know what to expect," Dittemore tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "But we were very impressed with the turnout and even thrilled to see even better support for the proposition this time than we had last time."   

Dittemore says the community has always been supportive of school issues, but largest percentages in the past have been between 70% and 80%. In April, the issue passed with an 80% yes vote. 

The $2 million bonds issue will finance renovations at the high school in Dekalb and elementary school in Rushville.  

Dittemore says having to re-run the issue did cause some setbacks. The district wanted to start projects this summer 

"I don't want to say that it put us a full year behind, but for a lot of the pieces and parts to make them work together it pretty much set us back a minimum of six months," Dittemore explains.  "And for a lot of the things it will set us back a full year." 

Dittemore points out the biggest delay comes with the track, with that project now not being able to get underway until after football season.  He also adds delays come in some renovation projects because they have to happen when students and staff are not in the school buildings. 

Dittemore says now that the issue has once again passed, the district can pick up where it left off in spring, after it originally passed in April 

"We actually have a proposal in place that we can move forward with the track, the track is actually new, it will be a new track," Dittemore says.  "The major thing here at the junior high and high school is new sports lighting for the baseball field." 

Dittemore says the district built the baseball field around five years ago but didn't have the funds to finish the lighting. The bonds will also help to replace lights around the football field and subsequently, the new track.

A do over for Buchanan County R-IV does even better

The Kansas City
Chiefs play pretty good football.

But the NFL
franchise wants to branch out to tell pretty good stories.

Chiefs President,
Mark Donovan, says a new venture – Foolish Club Studios – grew out of a request
the team got from a production company to track its 2024 season. Donovan says
the team had a counter proposal in mind.

“We went back to
the folks who did Michael Jordan’s ‘Last Dance’ and said, what if we did it
with two parallel paths?”&nbsp; Donovan tells
reporters during Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph. “One being tracking the
season with access we’ve never given before. And then a parallel path of
charting the history of the Kansas City Chiefs and Lamar’s (Hunt) impact on
sports.”

Donovan
acknowledges he wishes the ending of last season would have been different.

“We had to make a
decision going into this process that we were going to tell a story. And we
were going to hopefully accomplish history, which we did by being the first
team ever to be in three straight (Super Bowls) with a chance to win the third
in a row. But also tell the story of this franchise,” Donovan says.&nbsp; “I think the way they combined the two is going
to be really, really interesting for our avid fans as well as our worldwide
fans.”

“The Kingdom,” the
official title for the upcoming ESPN Original Series on the Kansas City Chiefs,
from ESPN, Disney+, and Skydance Sports set to premiere later this year. 

The Chiefs state
Foolish Club Studios will create scripted and unscripted programs that extend
beyond the football field. It builds on the success last year of the Hallmark
Channel production Holiday Touchdown:&nbsp; A
Chiefs Love Story.

Foolish Club
Studios will operate alongside the club's existing 65 Toss Power Trap (65TPT)
Production group, the in-house production arm of the team.

Donovan says the
NFL club simply is taking advantage of opportunities.

“Think about what
the NFL has done with the Chiefs and how they’ve increased and gone global.
When you look at the first ever worldwide streamed game, it’s Kansas City
Chiefs. When you look at this year’s game in São Paulo; the fact that it will be on You Tube worldwide
for free,” Donovan says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for the NFL and we’re
right in the middle of it. There are a lot of reasons we’re in the middle of it,
but, for us, it’s a great opportunity.”



The name Foolish
Club Studios is a nod to the Foolish Club, the name the original AFL owners,
which included the Chiefs Lamar Hunt, gave themselves when they formed the
league in competition with the entrenched NFL.

Kansas City Chiefs branching out to form Foolish Club Studios

HARRISON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Wednesday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Impala driven by a 16-year-old Eagleville boy was southbound on East 220th Avenue one mile southeast of Bethany. All the occupants were sitting or hanging out the windows of the car unsecured.

The car met a northbound vehicle and one of the occupants of the Chevy identified as a 16-year-old Ridgeway girl lost her balance and fell out the rear window of the car.&nbsp;

A private vehicle transported the girl to Harrison County Community Hospital. There were no other injuries. The MSHP no longer releases names of accident victims.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Polaris Ranger driven by Jace&nbsp;Twombly, 13, Hiawatha, was northbound on Mulberry Road and a 1978 Ford pickup driven by Luke A.&nbsp;Kessler, 25, Hiawatha,&nbsp;was eastbound on 230th Street. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

 EMS transported the boy to Amberwell Hospital. Kessler was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

a say in the matter, by Kansas U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, a self-proclaimed
livelong Chiefs fan, would welcome the NFL club to Kansas.

Marshall, during a
visit to Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph, backs the effort by Kansas to lure
the Chiefs across the state line.

“Well, of course,
we would welcome the Chiefs to Kansas. Again, a life-long Chiefs fan would love
to see them over there,” Marshall tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “There are many
reasons that we would like them, but I think mostly importantly going forward
is to give the Chiefs a more secure facility.”

Marshall says
Arrowhead, located in the Truman Sports Complex, isn’t secure enough for Chiefs
players.

“Think about all
the things going on in Chiefs Kingdom that these players are coming and going
at 8-9pm at night. And would be able to have more events there throughout the
year as well,” according to Marshall. “They would certainly be welcome. I think
about a complex in Olathe for the management-type people and a training complex,
how important that could be for the local community as well.”

Marshall would
welcome the Chiefs to cross the state line and relocate in Kansas.

“Look, I love
Arrowhead Stadium,” Marshall says. “I’ve had many, many memories there, going
back to just decades. But I think it’d be better for the Chiefs to come over to
a new location with a more secure facility.”

Kansas rolled out
an incentive package for the Chiefs to move into a new stadium across the state
line. Missouri countered with its own incentives to renovate Arrowhead.

Sen. Marshall says Kansas would welcome the Chiefs

Storms sent fans home early and forced the Kansas City Chiefs into the Griffons indoor sports complex for practice today.  

After questions of if he would retire following last year's Super Bowl loss, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is back in St. Joseph with the Chiefs for a 13th year.  

Kelce says what juices him up more than anything is to see the way the Chiefs program has grown through those 13 years 

"The fact that we have created this culture, we have created this machine that when you do it the right way it works and you get to win football games because of it," Kelce tells reporters following practice.  "And I think that alone kind of gives you the excitement that what we're doing here is special." 

All those years, except for one, Chiefs Training Camp has been held in St. Joseph which Kelce has referred to in the past as his sanctuary, and he says that's still the case.  

"I love it here, it gets me away from everything else that's going on in this crazy world and I think you can really just focus in on your craft and focus in on being the best you can for the guys around you," Kelce explains.  "Football's always been the biggest driving force I've ever had so I love coming out here and focusing on this and getting better for another run at hopefully another Super Bowl." 

Kelce has said on his podcast 'New Heights' that when in St. Joseph it's all about football and people can't even get ahold of him.  

Coming into Chiefs Training Camp last season, running back Carson Steele was looking to make an impact wherever he could.   

Head Coach Andy Reid possibly viewed Steele as a fullback, which Steele did begin learning, but spent much of last season at running back behind Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt.

Coming into camp this year, Steele says he had a point of emphasis this offseason to continue working on several roles 

"Work a lot more on my fullback role, special teams, as well as keeping the running back side of me," Steele says.  "I kind of talked last year about being a swiss army knife, kind of doing everything, but taking that to the next step this year." 

Steele is listed on the Chiefs first unofficial depth chart as the starting fullback, showing the Chiefs confidence in the growth of his blocking abilities 

The Chiefs continued gearing up for their first preseason game Saturday.  Going into game one, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says his focus is always on tackling and block destruction 

"I'm always going to be preaching guys let's find a way to get off blocks and tackle, the rest will take care of itself, and we'll build from there," Spagnuolo says.  "But if we're not doing that in game one then I'll be concerned you've got to go back to step one, et cetera, et cetera, so those will be big things." 

Kansas City takes on the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday on the road.   

The Chiefs still practiced for just over two hours, even after moving inside.  One more practice this week tomorrow at 9:15, before Saturday's preseason game.

MSHP: Great turnout for National Night Out

The Kansas City Chiefs were back at it today after a Monday off day, gearing up for the Arizona Cardinals during practice at Missouri Western State University.  

The Chiefs offense is working to get the explosive, downfield play back this season.  That's something offensive coordinator Matt Nagy felt they hit their stride with during today's practice 

"I really felt like today was one of our, as a group and in particular with Pat, one of our better days with those types of throws, some downfield stuff," Nagy tells reporters after practice.  "Where the timing element, it wasn't one of those deals where you're scrambling throwing the ball away and catching a ball off timing, these were all on timing throws and then guys were making great catches, so I was really pleased with that." 

The Chiefs offense remains without Hollywood Brown who did not practice again today with an ankle injury.   

The Chiefs safety group lost a piece this offseason as veteran safety Justin Reid was not resigned and moved on to the New Orleans Saints.   

Kansas City brought back safety Mike Edwards, who spent last year with Buffalo and Tampa Bay after being with Kansas City in 2023, to add that veteran presence to a young room.

Edwards says the last time he was here; it was Reid that was that leader, but now he feels like it's his responsibility to take on that role 

"Whatever it may be, trying to take on a leadership role," Edwards says.  "You know I feel like everybody can be a leader in that room, but being an older guy, being a vet, trying to take on that role so I can help out the younger guys as much as possible." 

Edwards says he's been impressed with the young safeties in the room like Jaden Hicks and Glendon Miller.  

He also adds there was no question he wanted to come back to Kansas City, because of how well the organization treated him 

Adding to that young core, the Chiefs drafted a rookie class that's very likeable and are becoming fan favorites during Chiefs Training Camp.  

Josh Simmons and Jalen Royals are greeted with cheers each morning coming down the hill.  But another working hard, and being recognized, is fifth round pick linebacker Jeffrey Bassa

Bassa sees himself as a swiss army knife of sorts, and says defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has had him working out all across the defense 

"Really learning both positions, the Mike and the Will, really trying to cross train so when it comes to a situation where he can get me in at either position, I feel like we've been doing a great job at that as well," Bassa says.  "Kind of knowing the fact that I'm learning two positions and now that I'm going to be able to later on in my career learn the back end and learn the full front, I feel like it's going to be a good job and it's going to help me in the long end."  

Bassa also credits leaning on veteran linebackers Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton in the learning process as guys that have helped ease him into the NFL.  

The Chiefs held another over two-hour practice, a standard at this point in camp.  Kansas City will practice again tomorrow at 9:15.

With first preseason game on the horizon, Chiefs return to practice

The Trump administration has taken its first step toward restricting access to abortions for veterans who are covered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ medical benefits, reversing a<a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2022-09-09/html/2022-19239.htm" target="_blank">&nbsp;2022 rule</a>.

Former Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration enacted the rule following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which ended federally protected access to abortion. More than a dozen states implemented abortion bans after that decision, and the policy was meant to preserve access to abortion for veterans in certain circumstances, regardless of where they lived. Veterans Affairs medical centers were allowed to provide abortions in cases of rape or incest, and when the life or health of the pregnant person was in jeopardy. Counseling about abortion was also permitted.

Under the proposal, nearly all abortions, except those to save a patient’s life, would be banned at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and would no longer be covered by VA medical benefits.

In<a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/state-policies-abortion-bans" target="_blank">&nbsp;eight states with abortion bans</a>, there are no rape or incest exceptions, including Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Five states with bans also don’t have an exception in cases where the pregnant person’s health is at risk, only to save their life.

The rule also applies to recipients of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA), which provides coverage to veterans’ families, including children, along with caregivers of veterans.

Officials&nbsp;<a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/08/04/2025-14687/reproductive-health-services#page-36416" target="_blank">wrote in the proposal</a>&nbsp;that the 2022 policy was enacted because the administration expected increased “demand” for abortion services, but the rule cited abortion bans in several states that created an environment of uncertainty for veterans who might need care.

Rescinding the rule was a directive in Project 2025, the blueprint document published by the conservative Heritage Foundation and co-authored by anti-abortion organizations such as Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. The first of what the document calls “needed reforms” calls for rescinding all department clinical policy directives that are “contrary to principles of conservative governance, starting with abortion services and gender reassignment surgery.”

“Neither aligns with service-connected conditions that would warrant VA’s providing this type of clinical care,” the Project 2025 document reads.

U.S. law already mandates that federal funding cannot be used for abortions except in cases of rape, incest and in certain medical circumstances. The administration argues the 2022 rule violated the “bright line between elective abortion and health care services” and should return to a policy that only allows abortion care to save the pregnant person’s life. Counseling about abortion options would no longer be permitted.

“Taken together, claims in the prior administrations rule that abortions throughout pregnancy are needed to save the lives of pregnant women are incorrect,” officials wrote in the proposed rule description. “Prior to September 9, 2022, abortions and abortion counseling were excluded from the medical benefits package, with no exceptions.”

According to estimates from nonprofit National Partnership for Women and Families, more than 400,000 women veterans lived in states that already had an abortion ban in place or were likely to ban it in 2023. That figure represents more than half of the women veterans in the country.

CEO, Clark Hunt, has high praise for St. Joseph, the home of the Chiefs
Training Camp.

“Well, this is our
15th year hosting training camp here out of the last 16 years and
the experience has been fantastic for the organization,” Hunt tells the media during
an appearance at Chiefs Training Camp.

It starts, says
Hunt, with the football team itself.

“I know you’ve heard
Coach (Andy) Reid talk about how important he thinks it is in terms of bringing
the team together to be up here in this environment,” Hunt says. “The
facilities are outstanding. The folks in the cafeteria do a great job with the
food. So, it’s been an all-around win for the football team.”

Hunt even has
praise for the dorms. He says he stays in the dorms when he visits training
camp. Some players have complained about mattresses in the past, but that has
been solved, according to Hunt, with a partnership with a local furniture store
that provided new mattresses.

Hunt says moving
training camp to St. Joseph has been a big benefit for the fans as well.

“Many of them are
local. Some have driven up from Kansas City or, really, across the bistate
region. And, having the fans here I think helps the players from an intensity
level at practice,” Hunt says. “And then, also, creates a very special environment
where the fans and players are able to interact like we saw here just a few
minutes ago with our players signing autographs.”

Hunt praises how
well Missouri Western State University takes care of the Chiefs, from the dorms
to the food in the cafeteria.

“It’s really been
great for the organization,” Hunt says. “We were glad to be able to extend our
relationship going forward. We do believe it’s been a key part of helping us win
a few championships.”

The Chiefs and
Missouri Western agreed to a six-year extension to hold training camp in St.
Joseph. The Chiefs moved training camp from River Falls, Wisconsin to St. Joseph in 2010. The team has
sequestered in St. Joseph every year since with the exception of the COVID
year; 15 out of the past 16 years.

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend traffic stop.&nbsp;

Just after&nbsp;2p.m. on Saturday police conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block U.S.59 in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as 53-year-old Dwight Downing, was arrested on

outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court. During his arrest he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana, according to Wilson.&nbsp; Downing remains in custody.

Dwight A. Downing, Jr., 53, Atchison, was arrested on Saturday on District and Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear in court. Also charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Taken to County Jail.

 </figure><h2>The Missouri National Education Association filed a lawsuit this summer to block $51 million in state appropriations to private school scholarships through the MOScholars program</h2>By:&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/author/jason-hancock/">Jason Hancock</a> <a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/missouri-senate-committee-advances-bill-to-ban-texting-while-driving/">Missouri Independent</a>A trio of parents and a national advocacy group are seeking to intervene in opposition to a lawsuit filed by Missouri’s largest teacher’s union challenging the constitutionality of $51 million in state funding for a private-school voucher program.&nbsp;Helping them in their efforts is Todd Graves, a prominent Kansas City attorney and chairman of the Herzog Foundation, which participates in the voucher program through an affiliated nonprofit connecting Missouri students and private schools with scholarship funding.Graves is also a member of the University of Missouri Board of Curators. He filed the motion to intervene in the case in Cole County circuit court last week.&nbsp;The lawsuit targets a state tax credit program called MOScholars that relies on nonprofits like the Herzog Foundation — called “educational assistance organizations” — to gather donations and distribute scholarships to students in private, parochial or home schools. Donors can receive a tax credit equal to 100% of their contribution but can use it to cover no more than half of their state tax liability.&nbsp;However, the budget signed by Gov. Mike Kehoe includes an injection of general revenue to the MOScholars program, budgeting $50 million in taxpayer funds for scholarships and $1 million to assist marketing the program.The three parents seeking to intervene in the lawsuit — one from Kearney, one from Kirkwood and one from Springfield — say they’ve used MoScholars and expect their families to benefit from the influx of state money.&nbsp;They are represented by EdChoice Legal Advocates, an Indiana-based nonprofit that advocates for school-choice measures. Graves filed the motion to intervene because he’s a licensed attorney in Missouri.&nbsp;“Missouri families depend on MOScholars to afford educational options that best fit their children’s needs,” said Thomas Fisher, director of litigation at EdChoice Legal Advocates. “We are proud to support these brave parents who are stepping forward to defend and protect the expansion of the MOScholars program.”The lawsuit, filed by the Missouri National Education Association and two public school teachers, argues a direct appropriation of taxpayer funds to MOScholars is unconstitutional.&nbsp;The 2021 law that created MOScholars only prescribes the use of tax-deductible donations to educational assistance organizations as its funding source — not general revenue. The lawsuit contends that a direct appropriation to the program effectively changes the MOScholars law,&nbsp; and changing state statute in a budget bill is not allowed.Plaintiffs had hoped a Cole County judge would expedite the case so that a temporary restraining order could be in place before state money is dispersed through the voucher program.&nbsp;Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey argued his office needed more time to prepare for the case, citing recent departures of two top aides who would have been involved in the litigation.&nbsp;“A rushed response could lead to inadvertent admissions or incomplete answers, which would unfairly prejudice the defendants’ ability to present a full and fair defense,” the attorney general’s office said in its filing.&nbsp;The judge&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/government-politics/article_5f4f5093-90a6-4cfd-ad0c-d63e8bfd38de.html" target="_blank">agreed with Bailey</a>, and arguments over the teacher’s union request for a temporary restraining order are set for late August.Critics of Missouri’s voucher program argue that shifting state resources into private schools could hurt public education around the state. That’s especially true, they contend, in rural Missouri, where there are few options for private or religious schools.&nbsp;“Politicians in Jefferson City and their privatization lobbyists are stealing from our kids,” Missouri NEA President Phil Murray&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/07/01/missouri-educators-sue-state-over-51-million-appropriation-to-private-school-vouchers/">told The Independent last month</a>. “In rural Missouri, that $51 million means losing our music teacher, canceling basketball and watching our schools crumble. They’re killing our small towns.”Proponents argue the program is a vital resource for families who do not feel public schools are the best option for their children.&nbsp;&nbsp;Libby Eversgerd, a single mother of four from Kirkwood and one of the parents seeking to intervene in the lawsuit, said her daughter struggled in public schools before eventually dropping out. When her son started having similar issues years later, she was able to use MOScholars to help enroll in a private school where she says his grades&nbsp;and attendance improved dramatically.“The recent expansion of the program is constitutional,” EdChoice’s Fischer said, “and will expand education freedom for low-income families and students with learning differences.”
