St. Joseph Museums has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Missouri Humanities Council to help in the creation of an Outdoor Interpretive Trail at the museum’s main campus
Located at 3406 Frederick Avenue on the museum's main campus, the new interpretive trail will invite visitors to explore the rich heritage and enduring presence of the Native Peoples of the St. Joseph area. Working in collaboration with representatives from the Ioway, Sac and Fox, and Kaw tribes, the museum will design interpretive signage that shares the prehistoric, historic, and contemporary stories of Indigenous communities connected to northwest Missouri. The trail will feature native plants and educational panels highlighting their traditional uses and ecological benefits.
It will also include outdoor seating areas where families can enjoy picnic lunches and where the museum can host community programs and cultural events in a natural setting. The project reflects the museums ongoing commitment to honoring the voices and histories of the Native Peoples who shaped this region. The grant will fund the development of interpretive materials, landscaping, and seating installations, with work scheduled to begin in September 2026.
