As the Independence Day holiday approaches, Missouri's Department of Conservation wants to remind Missourians to be safe, step by step.

Fireworks-Don't light them where sparks can ignite dry grass, leaves, or any possible fire fuel. Keep an extinguisher nearby, and an available water supply. Also, fireworks are not allowed in MDC areas.

Outdoor burns-Don't burn in the wrong conditions: Dry grass, high temperatures, low humidity, and wind are all factors in making uncontrollable fires. Check with local fire departments for any burn bans in place.

Driving off road-likewise, fires can start when dry grass touches the underside of a hot car or vehicle. Carry a fire extinguisher when going off-road.

Making a campfire-Clear a zone around any fire rings. Store unused wood far from the campfire. Never use gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable liquids to start your fire. Keep extinguishers around, and extinguish fires before leaving them, even if only briefly.

MDC also added to call 911 at the first sign of a fire getting out of control, and report suspected arson to 800-392-1111.
