Health officials report more COVID-19 deaths; 102 new cases

Though coronavirus numbers are up, Buchanan County Presiding
Commissioner Lee Sawyer sees some optimism developing in the fight against COVID-19.

Sawyer points out though the number of new cases and
hospitalizations have risen of late, efforts to develop a vaccine seem to be
bearing fruit.

“I think there’s a lot of reasons to be optimistic,” Sawyer
says. “It’s not been a fun time to sacrifice some of the things that you’d like
to do and would want to do, but I do think that there’s some real reason to be
optimistic looking forward. But it doesn’t necessarily help right now.”

St. Joseph health officials reported on Tuesday three
additional coronavirus-related deaths as well as 102 new cases of COVID-19. On
Monday, Buchanan County reported four deaths and 133 new cases. The county now
has totaled 5,250 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, resulting in 61
deaths.

Mosaic Life Care reported 95 COVID-19 patients in its system
as of Tuesday morning; 82 in St. Joseph, nine in Maryville, and four in Albany.

Sawyer cautions residents to continue wearing masks, keeping
six feet of distance with others, and washing hands frequently and thoroughly.

Federal money forwarded Buchanan County by the state to fight
COVID-19 has largely been spent, according to Sawyer. Buchanan County received
$10.2 million in federal funds, an allocation based on county population.

Sawyer says the County Commission has worked hard to make the
money count.

“We have distributed over 300 of the small business grants,
which were the $5,000 small business grant. We have gotten some really good
feedback from some folks on that, that that really made a difference in keeping
them going. I don’t know if that will be enough of a help for everybody, but we
certainly hope so and that was the design,” Sawyer says.

School districts in the county have been reimbursed for some
of the money spent to prepare school buildings for in-class teaching. Money
also has been used for additional testing to determine the spread of the
coronavirus in the county.

“So, we’re not completely at zero, but we’re pretty close,”
according to Sawyer. “If you look at what we’ve allocated that we said we would
reimburse, we’re really close to using it all. We just have a little bit left.”

Sawyer says the county faces a December 30th
deadline to spend the money.

A young St. Joseph man suffered a serious hand injury after a
homemade explosive went off while he was holding it.

St. Joseph police say officers responded to a call to assist
emergency workers in the 100 block of Tucker Street at 7 o'clock last night. They discovered a white
man in his 20s who had a serious hand injury. The man told officers a homemade
explosive went off accidently.

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says the vast majority of
the sex offenders registered with the county complied with state statutes on
Halloween night.

Puett says his deputies visited 264 registered offenders that
evening to make sure none had their lights on or were handing out candy to
children, which is prohibited by state law.

“We had 21 teams as well as support staff,” Puett tells host
Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “So, 21 two-member teams. And, I want to get
out early that we were very fortunate. We had partners from the (St. Joseph)
Police Department, Family Crimes (Unit) and some of those folks and the U.S.
Marshal Service that deals with the sex offenders came up. So, this was very
comprehensive. We always like working with our partners.”

Puett says Buchanan County keeps track of 303 sex offenders,
but some live in nursing homes or other assisted living facilities, leaving 264
living on their own or homeless. Puett says his department takes checking on
compliance on Halloween seriously with those 21 teams visiting residences of
offenders that night, most more than once.

“Went out and checked and we did some re-checks, obviously to make
sure that people are maintaining that,” according to Puett. “Out of the total
264, there were 20 that we considered non-compliant.”

Most committed only minor violations of state law, but two
were taken into custody. One fugitive was apprehended that evening. Puett says
four homeless offenders failed to check in with the sheriff’s office that night
as required by law.

A race discrimination lawsuit filed against Highland Community
College has been settled.

The American
Civil Liberties Union of Kansas had filed a lawsuit against the community
college, alleging the college instituted a plan to reduce the number of black
students on the northeast Kansas campus. The ACLU filed a brief stipulation of
dismissal Monday.

The ACLU filed suit March 19th in federal court.

Highland had been accused of directing coaches to recruit more
white athletes and of forcing black athletes to undergo excessive scrutiny
before being offered scholarships.

Highland had responded by asserting its recruiting is not
determined by a student’s race or ethnicity. It denied it ever instructed
coaches to exclude out-of-state athletes from recruitment.

Highland Community College settles discrimination lawsuit

Boehringer Ingelheim, KSU partner to invest in future of vet medicine

CLINTON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 4a.m. Monday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Jeep Compass driven by Antonio D. Wright, 23, Mobile, AL., was northbound on Interstate 35 three miles south of Cameron.

The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail. The vehicle returned to the road, the driver overcorrected and the jeep overturned.

Cameron EMS transported Wright to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Driver hospitalized after Jeep overturns

Northwest Missouri State University has postponed its winter
commencement ceremonies.

Officials at Northwest say they took the step “out of an
abundance of caution for its community and others during the continuing
COVID-19 pandemic.”

The ceremonies had been scheduled for November 20th
through the 22nd at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts.

Students who would have participated in the winter
commencement on the Maryville campus now have the option to participate in the spring
commencement ceremonies, currently scheduled for May 7th and 8th
next year.

Fall semester on the Northwest campus ends November 24th
with Northwest taking its Thanksgiving break. The week after the Thanksgiving
break will be a preparation week for students. Final exams, with some
exceptions, will be online during the scheduled final exam week:&nbsp; December 7th through the 11th.

commencement ceremonies, currently scheduled for May 7th and 8th
next year.Fall semester on the Northwest campus ends November 24th
with Northwest taking its Thanksgiving break. The week after the Thanksgiving
break will be a preparation week for students. Final exams, with some
exceptions, will be online during the scheduled final exam week:&nbsp; December 7th through the 11th.

Northwest Missouri State postpones winter commencement

Area health officials worry fatigue has set in in the fight
against COVID-19.

The number of new cases and hospitalizations lately have risen
to numbers not seen even in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.

Andrew County Health Department Nurse Manager Jayne White sees
the fatigue settling in throughout northwest Missouri.

“We’re all tired of this, believe us, we are as well, but now’s
not the time to give up or act like it’s just going to go away on its own,
because it’s not,” White tells St. Joseph Post. “We have to do these things to
decrease the spread and try to prevent the situation from getting any worse
than it already is.”

Andrew County reports new cases have jumped dramatically. In August,
the county counted a little more than two cases a day. Now, the county has seen
nearly 13 ½ cases daily. Andrew County has recorded 877 cases since the pandemic
began, resulting in 12 deaths.

White says now is the time for all area residents to redouble their
efforts.

“When you’re running a marathon, when you get tired you have
to power through that and that’s kind of where we’re at right now,” according
to White. “We need to as a community power through and do the right thing and
probably now so more than ever.”

White says residents need to wear masks, maintain social
distance, and wash hands thoroughly and frequently.

Andrew County Health Administrator Andrew Hoffman says wearing
a mask is important.

“Masks do work. They’ve been using them in hospital settings
for decades. That’s pretty clear evidence that masks work,” Hoffman tells St.
Joseph Post. “That’s why they wear them in hospital settings and other health
care settings.”

White says small communities are known for rallying together.

“Now’s the time that we need (for) everybody to rally together
and put your differences aside and do the right thing, which is wear a mask if
you’re going to be out in public. Even if you think you’re not going to come in
contact with people, put your mask on and do the right thing.” 

And, now is not the time to tough it out.

“And the biggest thing that people can do is please, please,
please, if you’re sick, stay home.”

The Andrew County Health Department is now under emergency
operations due to the big jump in coronavirus cases. WIC services will continue
by phone or curbside. Other services are suspended until further notice. Doors
are closed as the Andrew County Health Department to concentrate on the
response to COVID-19.

Buchanan County reported 79 new cases on Friday, bringing its
total to 4,931.

Mosaic Life Care reported 74 COVID-19 patients at its St.
Joseph hospital Monday morning, six in Maryville, and three in Albany.

Mosaic has testing more than 47,000 area residents with 4,920
testing positive.

Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 2 rejected a contract offer on
July 6th and began the strike on the 18th.

and Transportation Workers who negotiated a settlement on the local union’s behalf and they contend without their input.

The strike officially ended Friday afternoon.

CLINTON COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Friday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Freightliner driven by Jonathan R. Devere, 40, Winnsboro, TX., was eastbound on MO 116 one mile east of I-35 in Lathrop making a left turn into a parking lot.

A westbound 2011 Ford Taurus driven by Linda E. Fitzpatrick, 70, Kansas City, MO., failed to yield and struck the front of the Freightliner.&nbsp;

Tri-County EMS transported both drivers to North Kansas City Hospital. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman hospitalized after crash with a semi

NODAWAY COUNTY — just before 11:30a.m. Friday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol a 2006 Jeep Liberty driven by Angela K. Sleeth, 54, Bolckow, was northbound on Highway 71 four miles west of Barnard.

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It traveled across the median into the southbound lanes and struck a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven by Frances N. Clark, 76, Burlington Junction, head-on.

Nodaway County EMS transported the drivers to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Lifenet also transported a passenger in the Equinox Calvin C. Clark, 79, Burlington Junction, to Mosaic. The MSHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

3 hospitalized after Nodaway Co. head-on crash

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson says he should receive a report soon
on what led to widespread deaths from the coronavirus in the state’s veterans’
homes.

The Missouri Veterans Commission recently reported 12 more
deaths at the veterans’ home in Cameron, bringing the total death count to more
than 20 at that facility. More than 100 Missouri veterans have died at
veterans’ homes across the state.

Parson pushed for the commission to hire the Armstrong
Teasdale law firm to investigate the problem.

“And I have not received a report on that yet. I think that’s
still ongoing on that investigation that we’re looking at,” Parson tells
reporters during a stop in St. Joseph. “But, I think the one thing about the veterans’
homes, whether it’s a veterans’ home or a nursing home, anytime that there’s spikes
in numbers we’re always concerned about that and we’re going to take a deep
dive into that, get the resources we need to see what the problem was, what
created that, and how do we make sure, move in, and get those problems fixed.”

The Veterans Commission began restricting access to the homes
in early March after the first COVID-19 case was reported. The commission
ordered homes to undergo extensive sanitation efforts and the regular testing
of veterans and staff.

Parson, a Republican, won election to the position he assumed
two years ago after former Gov. Eric Greitens resigned. And, he won it easily,
receiving nearly half a million more votes than Democrat Nicole Galloway, the
state Auditor.

“I think the election was loud and clear that the people in
Missouri trust what the administration is doing right now,” according to
Parson. “They want us to continue doing what we’re doing. And I think since day
one we’ve tried to take a balanced approach on how we’ve dealt with all
situations.”

Parson says he set a tone from the beginning of focusing on
the priorities of the state, not politics. Parson led a strong night for
Republicans in Missouri, which led to each Republican statewide officeholder
winning re-election.

Parson says his focus now is to tackle the challenges facing
the state, including how best to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Governor’s a tough job,” Parson says. “You’ve got to do a
balancing act every day, how you treat people across the state. And again, we’ve
met I don’t know how many challenges since I’ve become governor and we’re in a
challenge right now and we’ve just got to get through it.”

Gov. Parson awaits veterans' home report; says election confirms policies

Chiefs fans might be interested in a new book.

Author David Smale has written about the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.

One of the many stories he tells, details the differences between current Chiefs president and owner Clark Hunt, and his father Lamar.

"Not that Lamar was not approachable" says Smale "But Clark just seems more like an average guy and a little easier to call him Clark then it was to call Lamar, Lamar." 

Smale's new book titled The Keys to the Kingdom details the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.

"It's basically a series of short features on the people and the events that have shaped the franchise's history" Smale says "Going all the way back to the founding of the franchise and going back to the founding of the AFL by Lamar Hunt and it covers moving to Kansas City in 1963."

Smale adds that the book touches on the tremendous success of the team in the AFL going all the way up to this past season’s Super Bowl win

Smale will be in St. Joseph on Saturday signing copies of his book at Pony Express Sports at the East Hills Mall.  Copies of the book will be available the day of the signing

patients as of Thursday morning in the St. Joseph hospital with two in
Maryville and one in Albany. Mosaic reported 82 coronavirus patients at St.
Joseph at its peak.

Mosaic
has now tested 46,523 area residents with 4,766 testing
positive. Mosaic is awaiting results on 438 tests.

Andrew
County reports eight new cases and 114 new cases in the past week, bringing the
county total to 877.

Doniphan
County, Kansas reports a total of 287 cases.

Missouri

Mosaic says the color blue represents the courage, stamina,
dedication, and love each caregiver demonstrates with their work.

Mosaic Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Davin Turner, says the
display is a way for Mosaic to say thank you to a dedicated staff.

“We really want to continue to make sure that all our caregivers
understand how much we value them and, frankly, from what I hear in the
community, how much the community very much values the fact that they get up
everyday and they come in here and they work and they take care of not only the
COVID patients, understand we have 200 patients here that are not COVID patients
that we’re providing care for,” Turner says.

Turner says Mosaic is bathing its hospitals in St. Joseph, Maryville,
and Albany in blue light.

“We will have blue lights out on the exterior just in support
of all the caregivers that are working here,” Turner says.

Mosaic says area residents are invited to drive to the Mosaic
facilities in St. Joseph, Maryville, and Albany tonight between 6:30 and 7:45
and turn on their car lights as a signal to caregivers they appreciate them.

Mosaic goes blue in honor of its nurses, staff

A
special Veterans Day ceremony on the St. Joseph campus of Missouri Western
State University as the university cuts the ribbon to open its Center for
Military and Veterans Services.

Major
General Levon Cumpton, Adjutant General of the Missouri National Guard, says it
is appropriate to celebrate on Veterans Day the opening of a center to serve
military college students.

“It’s
such a special day,” Cumpton tells those gathered at Missouri Western. “It’s an
honor to be here with you on this special occasion. I want to start by thanking
all the veterans in attendance. &nbsp;It is
you that we are here to celebrate and it is you that we are here to recognize
with the ribbon cutting of the Center for Military and Veterans Services.”

Cumpton
says those who serve deserve the recognition.

“Veterans
Day is an important day as it reminds our nation of the men and women who
signed on the dotted line, agreeing to go as far as laying down their own life
if necessary, to preserve our freedom,” Cumpton says.

The
center will provide information specific to military students and help navigate
the various financial assistance available to college students who are serving
or who have served in the military. It also will provide a place for military
students and veterans to gather.

Gov.
Mike Parson also attended the ribbon cutting and takes time to thank Missouri
Western Interim President Elizabeth Kennedy for reaching out to military
students.

“I

Johnson County, for example, shows a rate of 79 percent. He also said when it comes to COVID-19, 80 to 85 percent of people will not need to seek medical care, but reminded us that even people with no symptoms can spread the virus He says even those who have already had it can still get it and spread it again since scientists are not sure how long any immunity lasts. He also noted schools have a very low transmission rate for COVID-19. He says the problems come when students gather outside of the classroom, or from large gatherings like weddings and funerals.&nbsp;

Many Kansas counties were projected to have a greater than 99 percent chance of at least one COVID-positive individual at a gathering of 50 people.

When the gathering size is increased to 100, many counties in Missouri and Kansas had a greater than 99 percent chance including Nodaway County. Buchanan County was at 94 percent while Andrew County was at 86 percent.

Online tool shows potential risk of large gatherings amid pandemic

CLINTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Wednesday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Chevy Impala driven by Alan L. Burton, 65,&nbsp; Plattsburg, was northbound and stopped at a stop sign at U.S. 69 and MO 116 six miles east of Lathrop.

The driver failed to yield to an eastbound 2005 Ford Mustang driven by Burket R. Jones, 37, Lawson. The Mustang struck the Impala.

Tri-County EMS transported Burton to Liberty Hospital. Jones was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man hospitalized after 2-vehicle Clinton Co. crash

The annual St. Joseph Mayor's thanksgiving dinner in St. Joseph will be going virtual this year.

Chief Development Officer Michelle Fagerstone of Second Harvest St Joseph says the plan was to go virtual since the beginning.

"When we started planning everything the mayor said I want to do things virtual, I don't want to gather people into the Civic Auditorium."

Instead, the event will now be aired as a television special.

"We really knew that we did not want to go through Facebook, or any of those online platforms" Fagerstone says "So we actually contacted KQ2 and began the work on making a TV special, so it's actually the mayor's Thanksgiving TV special."

Second Harvest and KQ2 have worked together to film the Mayor's thanksgiving dinner TV special that will be streamed online and broadcast on television.

Fagerstone compares the sepecial to the old Jerry Lewis Telethon's saying you'll see everything you would normally see at the Thanksgiving dinner with ceremonies and awards, and also some testimonials.

"What you're going to see is your going to get updates on all of the work that we've done pre pandemic and during the pandemic." Fagerstone says "You're going to hear about the need that still exists and is actually growing within our service territory."

The special will be broadcast on Thursday, November 12th from 11 am to Noon, and then again from 6 to 7 pm.  Donations will also be taken during the show with the North American Savings Bank matching every donation up to $50,000.

Along with donations Second Harvest is also selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a ring donated by Niche of Time Jewelry.&nbsp; You can see the ring, and buy raffle tickets <a href="https://www.shcfb.org/news-events/mayors-thanksgiving-dinner.html">HERE</a>.
