A fruit sale has been extended in hopes of helping tornado victims.
The St. Joseph Host Lions Club had planned to wrap up its fruit sale this weekend, but has reopened it. Roger Unruh with the Lions Club says 100% of the sales today and tomorrow will go toward helping tornado victims in southeast Missouri, Arkansas, and Kentucky.
“We’re sending the money through the International Foundation of Lions and it will go directly in there; 100% of whatever we donate, whatever we make off of the profits off of this and we’re hoping it to be $2,000 or $3,000, the next two days,” Unruh tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.
The Lions Club ended its formal sale this past weekend, took Sunday to reorganize, then reopened for this final push to raise money for tornado relief.
“We got everything reorganized, got us a count and we want to sell everything we’ve got.”
Unruh says that as of Monday morning, the club sill had about 75 cases of oranges, 15 cases of apples, and 15 cases of grapefruit to sale.
The sale is being held at the East Hills Shopping Center parking lot, next door to the St. Joseph Library.
Unruh urges members of the public to come to the sale and do something good for tornado victims and themselves.
“Buy a case of fruit,” Unruh says. “It’s a great thing to have sitting around over Christmas, after you’ve eaten so much and you’ve got all that candy looking at you. Grab an orange instead.”
The sale runs until six o’clock this evening and runs from 10am until 6pm on Tuesday.
