HOLT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after noon Wednesday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Pontiac G6 driven by 18-year-old Courtney M. Gordon of Mound City was&nbsp; southbound on Route E one mile north of Mound City.

The car traveled off the west side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The car traveled off the east side of the road, struck a ditch and a tree.&nbsp;

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Gordon to Fairfax Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Missouri teen hospitalized after car strikes a tree

A juvenile has been shot and killed this evening, St. Joseph Police report&nbsp;

St. Joseph Police report the shooting took place around 4:45 pm in the area of 28th and Messanie. &nbsp;

Officers responded to the scene to find that the victim had been shot and was traveling to the hospital in a private vehicle.&nbsp; It was reported that multiple shots were fired at the scene. &nbsp;

Officers also found evidence at the scene of the gunfire. The juvenile was pronounced dead at the hospital.&nbsp;

Shooting at 28th and Messanie leaves one dead

A tax levy that has been in the works for some time for the Savannah School District received voter approval in Tuesday's election. &nbsp;

After losses on three previous tax levy's, the school district's 15 cent maintenance only tax levy won 1,175 to 1,032.&nbsp;

Savannah School District spokesperson Jess Gillett says she was excited to see the levy finally receive voter approval. &nbsp;

"The levy had been paired down several times over the course of the years and trying to get it to pass and so 15 cents is really, really the bare minimum of what we needed to address some critical, critical maintenance stuff," Gillett tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, we are so, so, so excited that that passed, we will be unfortunately not seeing any profits from that until December."&nbsp;

She says though that's just fine because the district knows the money will at least be there. &nbsp;

But what was the difference between this year and the last three elections?&nbsp;

Gillett says she thinks the biggest change was how many voters went to the polls. &nbsp;

"Them being vocal about what they want and you know people really seeing the need, seeing the need in our buildings," Gillett explains. &nbsp;

Gillett says some funds received during the COVID pandemic got the ball rolling on some projects, and says now with these funds the district needs to figure out how to prioritize the needs.&nbsp;

"The board has a work session on April 18th, and they'll really start having some of those conversations as far as what's our next move, really prioritizing the three projects the Superintendent talked about the roofing, the HVAC, and the underground pipelines at the high school, those are big projects," Gillett says. &nbsp;

Gillett adds there are other critical needs behind those three big projects such as parking lots at the Savannah schools needing repairs.&nbsp;

Fourth time is the charm, Savannah School District gets tax levy passed

Mid-Buchanan School District voters approved an eight Millon dollar bond issue for the Faucett school in the Tuesday elections.&nbsp;

The bond issue, which will not require a tax increase, received 474 yes votes to 143 no votes.&nbsp;

Mid-Buchanan Superintendent Jay Albright says as it got closer to the election, he grew more confident in the measure the district had proposed.&nbsp;

"I only say that because we had tons of really positive feedback and great questions, and honestly for me personally as the Superintendent through this entire process, I never had one phone call where somebody was really upset or was really just frustrated with why we're doing it," Albright tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Now obviously, there might have been some folks, I get that"&nbsp;

Albright says while he was confident the bond would pass; he didn't know it would be by such a large margin. &nbsp;

"I mean I was crossing my fingers that number one I hope it passes, but number two you know if it settled in somewhere around the 65-70% I was going to be super elated with that," Albright explains. "Then when it came in at 76.82%, it just feels good that the community as a whole just really has that support and trust in what we're trying to do."&nbsp;

Albright says now that the bond has passed, design work will begin, and he has already outlined his goals to his staff.&nbsp;

"We will have specifications out to bid by hopefully mid to late June and possibly a contractor selected by mid to late July, and potentially dirt moving and construction happening probably right around the time school's going to start," Albright says breaking it down. "So, it could get a little messy, but you know, we'll all work together and it's going to be great."&nbsp;

Mid-Buchanan School District passes bond issue

Studies show less than half of the victims that experience the trauma of sexual assault seek medical care, and Mosaic Life Care hopes to change that. &nbsp;

It's sexual assault awareness month, and as part of that Mosaic is launching the Start by Believing campaign, letting sexual assault victims know that it believes them. &nbsp;

Forensic Program Coordinator at Mosaic Natalie Maupin says the premise of Start by Believing is simple but powerful message&nbsp;

"When a sexual assault survivor comes to us, our response matters, and simply saying I believe you is a big powerful step," Maupin tells reporters.&nbsp;

Start by Believing was launched by End Violence Against Women International in 2011.&nbsp; The Start by Believing campaign at Mosaic begins today.&nbsp;

Maupin says one of the reasons victims don't see medical help is that they aren't believed. &nbsp;

"Maybe they did tell someone, and someone questioned them, and someone is like are you sure that really happened or how could that be possible," Maupin explains. "And so, they think, well if that person didn't believe me who else is going to believe me, and so they just stop there."&nbsp;

Maupin says she's seen a transformation in the victims that come to Mosaic for help. &nbsp;

"My goal is that, you know, they've gone through one of the worst things that could probably ever happen, that I could ever imagine for someone, and I know it sounds crazy, but my goal is that they would leave feeling a little better than what they came in," Maupin says. "And I know that's hard after they've been through that but, I want them to feel so comfortable with us, and I will say that a lot of times that happens."&nbsp;

Maupin says Mosaic works with various agencies around St. Joseph as well as law enforcement to help aid victims.&nbsp;

A man suspected in a reported shooting gave up to St. Joseph
police after a two-hour standoff yesterday afternoon.

St. Joseph police report officers responded to a “shots fired”
call around three o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the 2600 block of Folsom
Street. Residents indicated there was an exchange of gunfire.

A suspect barricaded himself in a residence. Police called in the
Special Response Team and began negotiations. The suspect gave up without
incident after two hours. Another suspect remains at large.

Former Wire Rope and WireCo executive John Josendale has been elected as the new St. Joseph mayor, defeating Gary Wilkinson 53.75% (4,688) to 45.98% (4,010). He takes over for mayor Bill McMurray, who elected to not run for reelection.

Marty Novak (4,869), Jeff Schomburg (4,790) and Kenton Randolph (4,637) won the St. Joseph city council at-large seats.

Randy Schultz won an at-large council seat outright in the February 8th
primary.

Madison Davis has been re-elected to the St. Joseph city council's first district, defeating Patricia Jones 57.32% (936) to 42.25% (690).

Taylor Crouse won the second district city council seat in the February primary.&nbsp;

Andrew Trout ran unopposed for the third district city council seat.

Michael Grimm has defeated incumbent Russell Moore in St. Joseph's fourth city council district 56.76% (962) to 42.83% (726).

Theodore "Ted" Elo has been elected as St. Joseph Municipal Judge, beating Terri Lowdon 52.76% (4,475) to 47.06% (3,992).  Elo takes over for John Boeh, who's retiring after 21 years on the bench.

Elsewhere, the Mid-Buchanan special school bond to borrow $8 million for classroom and building construction/furnishing PASSED 76.82% (474) to 23.18% (143).&nbsp; The adjusted debt service levy of the School District is estimated to remain unchanged at $0.90 per $100.

Isaura Garcia (4,594) and Kim Miller (4,156) have been elected to the St. Joseph School District board.

Voter turnout county-wide was 19.6% with 9,940 ballots cast.

ATCHISON COUNTY—A Kansas man jailed over a dozen times since 2004 is in custody again.

On Monday, police arrested 50-year-old Jason E. Alexander of Atchison in the 1900 Block of Harper in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

He is being held&nbsp; on a requested charge of domestic battery.

In 2015, police arrested Alexander for alleged theft and failure to appear. He has previous convictions for theft, DUI and aggravated battery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections and has been out of prison since 2017.

Kan. felon with history of violence accused of domestic battery

BROWN COUNTY—Two people died in an accident just before 7a.m. Tuesday in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Rodney Paul Lierz, 55, Powhattan, was westbound on 170th Road at Goldfinch Road one half mile south of Powhattan.

The pickup struck a northbound Hyundai Elantra driven by 34-year-old Darliss Jeneane&nbsp;Whitebird of Holton on the passenger side.

Whitebird and a 10-year-old boy from Horton were pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported an 8-year-old boy in the Hyundia and Lierz to the Hiawatha hospital. The boy was later transferred to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman, 10-year-old dead after 2-vehicle crash

Eastern Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner has returned from a
Congressional trip to Eastern Europe, observing first-hand the horrors of
Russia’s war against Ukraine.

LaTurner participated in a bipartisan trip to Poland, Romania,
and Moldova with a short time across the border into Ukraine.

LaTurner, a Republican, says the invasion of Ukraine has
united both Congress and NATO.

“You’ve seen NATO, which is incredibly important for peace,
you’ve seen them come together, find ways to work together like never before,”
LaTurner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “All the evil and the horror that Vladimir
Putin has caused, there are some good things that are coming from this and I
think a strong united West and a strong united NATO is one of those.

LaTurner says he got to see how the West has rallied to
provide humanitarian aid to the four million-plus refugees from Ukraine, both
governmental agencies and other charities. Poland alone has had to absorb 2 ½ million
refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

LaTurner says he returned with a better idea of how the United
States needs to respond.

“The three things that we absolutely must do:&nbsp; number one, continue to provide lethal
weapons to the people of Ukraine so they can fight the Russians and push back
on this naked, evil aggression that they’re experiencing right now; number two,
we need to make sure that we continue to provide humanitarian aid for the folks
that have been affected by this; and number three, we need to increase
sanctions on Russia.”

LaTurner says he is concerned the war might broaden into other
countries.

“I think we see an unhinged leader in Vladimir Putin, who has
made a series of terrible decisions that have not worked out well for his
country,” according to Putin. “And when you have an unhinged man who’s capable
of this evil behavior, of course you have to be concerned about what is going
to happen. That’s why it has been so important for the West to come together.
We need to continue to do that and make sure that we’re standing firm to respond
to anything that may potentially happen.”

LaTurner was one of three Republicans joined by three
Democrats on the trip.

LaTurner returns from Eastern Europe with better understanding of Ukraine conflict

Average voter turnout is expected for today's general election in Buchanan County, officials say.&nbsp;

The polls are open until 7pm today.&nbsp;

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack Garvey says she's expecting voter turnout to be right around 25-30%.&nbsp; She says that every municipal election is different.&nbsp;

"It's local, I wish that more people would turn out for these elections because they impact them here locally first," Baack Garvey tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But as always your general elections always bring out a larger turnout."&nbsp;

Baack Garvey says the nice weather we are expecting today should bring more people out to vote. &nbsp;

Police do report one shot hit property at a residence.

A shots fired call came in at 7:30 last night, reporting a

No one wounded in St. Joseph shooting

St. Joseph school board members have promoted Assistant
Superintendent of Business and Operations, Gabe Edgar, to become the district’s
new superintendent to replace Doug Van Zyl who has taken a job in his home
state of Minnesota.

Edgar came to St. Joseph with Van Zyl four years ago. Van Zyl
has accepted an offer to become superintendent of Lakeville Area Schools.

The St. Joseph School Board met in executive session Monday
evening and voted unanimously to appoint Edgar to succeed Van Zyl. Edgar begins
his new duties July 1st.

“The Board has chosen to promote from within because we are
convinced that there is not a better candidate to fill this position for the
St. Joseph School District than this person,” School Board President Tami
Pasley said in a written statement. “Over the last four years, Dr. Edgar has
proven himself extremely valuable to the district as the Assistant
Superintendent of Business and Operations. The district is in a far better
place because of his leadership and expertise in those areas. We are excited

ATCHISON COUNTY —A Kansas man familiar to police was jailed over the weekend after an altercation with officers.

St. Joseph voters will choose a new mayor during Tuesday’s
General Municipal Election as two candidates vie for the position being vacated
by Mayor Bill McMurray who has chosen not to run for re-election.

John Josendale is running for mayor after retiring from Wireco
where he worked for 48 years. He says he has learned a lot campaigning for the
office.

“One of the things that’s been really exciting and interesting
to me about running for office is you get to meet a lot of people,” Josendale
tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “You get to talk to a lot of people,
but you also get to learn a lot about how the city operates, how the different
organizations operate.”

Josendale has worked with various St. Joseph organizations,
such as United Way and Family Guidance.

Josendale says City Hall must become more consumer friendly
for residents.

“Instead of making it difficult, we need to have a process, in
my opinion, where it’s easier, we’re more user friendly,” according to
Josendale. “And an idea for that might be that you have one individual that you
talk to that inside City Hall goes to the different departments for you.”

Josendale came out on top of a crowded primary election in
February, receiving 2,998 votes; 38.46% of the vote. Coming in second was
former Deputy Mayor and three-term city council member Gary Wilkinson, who
received 2,686 votes in the primary; 21.89% of the vote. Wilkinson edged
Whitney Lanning to advance to the General Municipal Election.

Wilkinson says the city needs to get at the root cause of an
increase in crime.

“I think much of the crime is driven by drug abuse and mental
health issues,” Wilkinson tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hotline. “I’d like to develop a proposal
to address substance abuse issues with funds from the recently settled opioid
litigation.”

Wilkinson returned to St. Joseph after serving as
Superintendent of Streets for University City, where he said he learned a lot about
the operations of city government.

Wilkinson says, if elected, he wants to update city zoning
ordinances that he says are outdated.

“Our zoning creates haphazard development and that’s something
we don’t need as a city,” according to Wilkinson. “We’re talking about issues
of city appearance and that plays into that.”

The crime occurred on Friday night. Cash and coins were taken.

St. Joseph voters will decide a rematch in the upcoming election. &nbsp;

Current incumbent First District Council Member Madison Davis believes there are still things to get done, but he also accomplished a lot in his four years.&nbsp;

"We got some things accomplished that I think will set us on a course for improvement," Davis tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.&nbsp;

Pat Jones says after losing in the 2018 election, she had many people ask her to run again this time around for the council seat.&nbsp;

"So, I'm sure not doing this for the money and I think this might be something that people ponder in their little brains why anybody would do this when a council person is going to make, maybe $500 a month," Jones says to Birr. &nbsp;

Both candidates want to see a change in how law enforcement is paid. &nbsp;

Davis says a reason for the law enforcement shortage in St. Joseph, is the pay officers receive here&nbsp;

"We've got to be able to continue to look at things for our law enforcement, and maybe the pay needs to be higher," Davis says. &nbsp;

Pat Jones says something needs to be done in the upcoming budget to help law enforcement.&nbsp;

"So, I don't know if it's going to be more money that we're going to give to the college to help them with that program, or what," Jones says. "But it's a very, very, common question asked to everybody that's running."&nbsp;

Jones will face Davis in the rematch on the April 5th ballot.

Former first district council member seeks to unseat current council member in April election

While six candidates are vying for St. Joseph's three at-large seats on the city council, two candidates are on the ballot for city council in the fourth district, which covers the southeast quarter of the city.

Incumbent Russell Moore was first elected to the council in 2018 after spending 42 years on the St. Joseph Fire Department, retiring as a battalion chief.

Moore, a St. Joseph native, cites public safety and appearance of the city as two key issues. While Moore is proud of the 120 miles of street repair that's gone on during his time in council, he'd like to see some attention given to the alleyways.

"The alleyways in our city need some attention," Moore said during a March interview on KFEQ's The Hotline. "Not just a little bit of attention but quite a bit."

As a former dispatcher, Moore says providing the best equipment and resources to those who work in public safety is also a top priority.

"Public safety (employees) are the ones who put their lives on the line," he said. "So, yeah. I want to take care of them. Provide them with the equipment that they need."

Moore's opponent in this election is Michael Grimm - a retired airline pilot and director of flight operations of more than 30 years.

A St. Joseph native, Grimm says his time as a pilot gave him a chance to see and experience multiple cities and towns across the country. He also believes it's given him the proper tools to be an effective member of city council.

"You need leadership skills, critical thinking and team building," Grimm told The Hotline. "I used those every day that I flew and that's what kept me alive. I think that's what we need more of on the city council."

Grimm also cited public safety as a top issue facing the city. He's also spent the last 10 or so years on various city boards that deal with beautification.

While Grimm is in favor of addressing law enforcement shortages, getting to the root of crime and further beautifying the city, he urges fiscal responsibility from city hall.

"I really want to work hard on the way we spend our tax dollars," Grimm said. "We have to be more conservative and wise about the way we spend it so that everyone benefits from it."&nbsp;

Grimm and Moore faced off against each other for a city council seat in the fifth district in a February 2018 primary. Moore beat Grimm then by a slim 391-381 margin.

The municipal election is Tuesday, April 5.

Grimm challenging incumbent Moore for fourth district city council seat

If your yard has been piling up with sticks and leaves, it's time to burn them up as open burning began this month in St. Joseph. &nbsp;

Fire Inspector Steve Hendrickson says that open burning will allow St. Joseph residents to burn any waste that has been on your property for the past months.&nbsp;

"You can't like if you have a commercial garden, lawn service care, or something like that, you can't go out and bring stuff to your property and burn it's only stuff that's generated on that property," Hendrickson tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "It needs to be in roughly the size of a 55-gallon drum, it can be made out of chicken wire anything you want to make it out of, just roughly that size."&nbsp;

Open burning will be allowed in St. Joseph from 8am until 6pm, as long as weather conditions are right. &nbsp;

Hendrickson says that with the recent rains we have had, conditions should be good to burn, but there are some weather conditions that will force burning to be banned. &nbsp;

"If it gets super dry to where it's a fire danger, especially on a windy day, they'll stop it just because the embers could fly and then they of course cause more problems than anything else because they fly up against somebody's fence, or their house, or their garage, or something and then we end up with a structure fire out of it," Hendrickson explains. "But those are the two main ones, high winds is the biggest one."&nbsp;

Be careful with those fires: open burning this month in St. Joseph

KINGSTON, Mo. (AP) — A former northwest Missouri teacher and coach has been charged with multiple sexual crimes.

Online court records show that 29-year-old Zachary Douglas, of Utica, is jailed without bond pending an April 7 hearing on 11 felony and seven misdemeanor counts. The charges were filed in two batches over the past two weeks. They include sexual contact with a student, statutory sodomy and furnishing pornographic material.

Court documents allege Douglas, who taught science at Braymer High School and coached football and baseball, sent nude photos and videos to some of his students from July 2021 through last month, WDAF reports.

A female student told a forensic interviewer that Douglas touched her or tried to touch her inappropriately on a bus twice in October. The student said Douglas also called her numerous times into his office, where he would touch her inappropriately.

She also said she received multiple nude photos from Douglas from his Snapchat account, court records say.

Douglas told the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department that the student put his hand on her inappropriately.

No attorneys is listed for him in online court records.

The student said Douglas also called her numerous times into his office, where he would touch her inappropriately.She also said she received multiple nude photos from Douglas from his Snapchat account, court records say.Douglas told the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department that the student put his hand on her inappropriately.No attorneys is listed for him in online court records.

HARRISON COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Saturday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway&nbsp; Patrol reported a 2011 Ford Taurus driven by Jayden R. Welcher, 20, Eagleville, was eastbound on Route KK six miles north of Eagleville.

The Ford struck the rear of a 2012 Hyundai Elantra driven by Nancy L. Morris, 72, Eagleville, who had just turned eastbound onto Route KK from&nbsp; northbound 230th Avenue in front of the Taurus.

North Harrison Ambulance transported a passenger in the Hyundai Jorge Benitez, 72, Eagleville to Harrison County Community Hospital. Welcher and Morris were not injured.&nbsp; All three were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

An annual dance event will return to the stage at the historic Missouri Theatre, helping raise money for charity. &nbsp;

Dancers will fill the stage for A Chance to Dance hosted by the Dance Arts Center in St. Joseph on Saturday as the event raises money for Voices of Courage Child Advocacy Center.&nbsp;

 </figure>By MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostAn annual dance event will return to the stage at the historic Missouri Theatre, helping raise money for charity. &nbsp;Dancers will fill the stage for A Chance to Dance hosted by the Dance Arts Center in St. Joseph on Saturday as the event raises money for Voices of Courage Child Advocacy Center.&nbsp;Dance Arts Center owner and director Marla Heeler says that the event will bring in dancers from dance studios all around the region, ranging from right here in St. Joseph to Lenexa, Kansas.&nbsp;"It's kind of fun because we just ask audiences, or our dance studios around the area to bring in just some of their best of their best to come in," Heeler tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "So, it's a little bit of a unique dance concert, and it has a lot of variety since we have so many different studios that come and participate."&nbsp;It's the 16th year that Dance Arts Center has hosted the event.&nbsp; The program will begin at 7pm on Saturday.&nbsp;Heeler says raising money for the center has been a cause near and dear to her family’s heart since she started this event. &nbsp;"I went to them actually 17 years ago and said can I do this for you and they said yes, so we've just been kind of working together ever since," Heeler says "The advocacy center, they serve nine counties here in northwest Missouri, and all their services are free."&nbsp;Heeler says everyone that comes to watch the program will see all types of different dances. &nbsp;"Including even some clogging I think from our friends in Leavenworth, which is something that used to be kind of big in our area but we don't see a lot anymore," Heeler explains. "I know we have some production numbers, our studio will be doing a, we've got a whole little classic rock dance number that they'll do, so that's really fun our parents of course love it."&nbsp;The event will be held for the 16th year.&nbsp; Dancers will start to take the stage to perform at 7pm&nbsp;You can find out more information about the concert and Dance Arts Center <a href="https://thedanceartscenter.com/a-chance-to-dance">HERE</a>.&nbsp;<figure>
