Second Harvest officials showed off the work they do to USDA officials as a celebration was held for a grant awarded by the USDA to Second Harvest.&nbsp;

USDA Rural Housing Service Administrator Joaquin Altoro says he's excited to see Second Harvest taking the grant from USDA and using it to build capacity to do more.&nbsp;

"What they did with that they did mobile, they got mobile they were able to go to the people," Altoro tells reporters. "In most cases in rural communities we know a drive is not just five minutes up the block, the drive can be a half hour, 45 minutes, so really excited the fact that we were able to partner with an organization like Second Harvest and give them the capacity or build their capacity to be mobile and their ability to serve those that were in need."&nbsp;

Altoro says that a significant amount of work goes into the application process for these USDA grants.&nbsp;

"We have our local representatives, our state office, we have local staff that does an amazing job at having those relationships in the beginning and providing some of that technical assistance to provide the application," Altoro says.&nbsp;

Altoro says then the application goes through a process where everything is weighed against the need and how organized the organization is.&nbsp;

"It's a lot of work, so the fact that we're sitting here today and celebrating this announcement is just amazing," he says.&nbsp;

Altoro got a chance to tour Second Harvests facility during a celebration this week for the grant. &nbsp;

Altoro says he was most impressed by how well Second Harvest officials knew their business model and how efficiently it was run. &nbsp;

"Time was taken to say we've got to serve our people, we have to bring the food to our folks, but at the same time we need to dedicate some time to make sure we're doing it efficiently and that we're able to sustain ourselves for many years to come," Altoro explains. "So, that has been very impressive with this organization."&nbsp;

The grant from USDA began last year for Second Harvest worth in all over 200-thousand dollars over a three-year period. &nbsp;

The grant helps fund Second Harvests mobile food pantries as well as its entire operation throughout 19 northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas counties.&nbsp;

On Monday, police arrested 29-year-old Stacey M. Gorman, Jr. of Atchison, on a requested charge of criminal use of a financial card and unlawful computer act. 

The allegations are in connection to a stolen financial card used at Kings Super Store, 912 Unity in Atchison and Stop and Go at 405 U.S.59 in Atchison on July 21.&nbsp; He is being held&nbsp; without bond and due to appear in court on July 29, according to online jail records.

Whether the Kansas City Chiefs continue to hold training camp
in St. Joseph has yet to be decided.

In 2020, the Chiefs reached a three-year agreement with Missouri
Western State University to hold the camp on the St. Joseph campus through the
2022 season. The agreement can be extended for two years.

Chiefs President Mark Donovan says the agreement has been
beneficial to the club.

“Missouri Western and St. Joe
have been great to us,” Donovan tells reporters. “They’ve made sure that they
understand that every rep matters. That’s an easy way of saying, ‘Everything
has to be right; we can’t afford to miss.’ That’s really important. We love our
partnership; we love our relationships, and we fully intend to continue to have
those relationships.”

Donovan notes the Chiefs do have
options in the contract. Whether to exercise those options will be discussed
with Missouri Western officials after this year’s training camp concludes.

For now, it appears the Chiefs like the arrangement in St.
Joseph.

“Our head coach (Andy
Reid) loves getting away, our players like it,” Donovan says. &nbsp;“COVID actually gave us an opportunity to look
at a different way of doing this. I don’t want to oversell that they like it
because it is training camp, I think there’s an aspect they don’t like
anywhere, but I think that camaraderie building and that time away is really
valuable and we see it that way.”

A trend has been underway the
past few years for NFL clubs to move training camp back home, holding camps onsite
rather than away from their stadiums and facilities. The Chiefs remain one of
the few clubs that continue to get away for camp.

This is the first year of the three years since the signing the
new deal that has been free of coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

“I think training camp
– we’ll come out of this year, this will be our first real normal one – and
we’ll do the same thing and see if there are things we can do differently,”
says Donovan. “But I think for this period of time, what Andy (Reid) has told
me, this is really valuable and we like doing it this way.”

Missouri Western has hosted
Chiefs Training Camp since 2010 when the Chiefs decided to bring training camp
closer to home after 20 years away from the state of Missouri. The Chiefs have
had five training camp locations in the club's history.

ATCHISON—A man was injured in a mowing accident just after 11a.m. Tuesday in Atchison.

The 20-year-old city of Atchison Public Works employee was mowing on an embankment in the 300 Block of River Road, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Thee mower began to slid towards the river.&nbsp; The employee&nbsp;was able to jump off the mower before it slid into the river. EMS transported him to the hospital for treatment of injuries. 

The mower was recovered from the river, according to Wilson. Police released no additional details Tuesday afternoon including the employee's name.

The St. Joseph Youth Alliance is partnering with 15 and Mahomies to incentivize youth to get off the sidelines and volunteer. &nbsp;

St. Joseph Youth Alliance has partnered with 15 and Mahomies, Patrick Mahomes foundation, the program called Volunteer for 15. Registration is now open for the program.&nbsp;

Program Director Misty Coyle says the program encourages youth ages 11 to 18 to pledge to volunteer 15 hours of their summer time. &nbsp;

"You can earn the hours between June 1st to August 31st, so there's still plenty of time to get those 15 hours in," Coyle tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "The first 500 youth that register, take the pledge, and complete their 15 hours get a volunteer for 15 t-shirt."&nbsp;

But the incentives don't stop there, Coyle says. She says youth that register and complete the most volunteer hours will receive an autographed item from Patrick Mahomes. &nbsp;

Volunteers can also make a video about why they enjoyed volunteering and have a chance to win tickets to a Kansas City Chiefs home game.&nbsp;

Coyle says besides that feel good feeling everyone gets from volunteering, there are other benefits for youth volunteering.&nbsp;

"But also, the youth get to work on some really important skills that they need as they get older such as critical thinking and problem solving," Coyle explains.&nbsp;

Volunteer for 15 encourages youth volunteers to step off the sidelines and volunteer for 15 hours. But what does it mean to step off the sidelines?&nbsp;

"It is so easy to stay at home and do the things that you want to do that's fun just for you and your family and there are times where your community needs you and asks you to step off the sidelines," Coyle says. "Come and help those in need, come and help those that could use a hand up."&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by a 17-year-old Savannah girl was northbound on Belt Highway at County Line Road in St. Joseph.

The driver failed to yield at the stop light. The Pontiac struck an eastbound 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Stephen E. Thomas, 69, St. Joseph.

A private vehicle transported the teen to Mosaic Life Care. Thomas was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

17-year-old injured after Belt Highway crash

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for an alleged domestic incident.

On July 22, police arrested 39-year-old Colt C. Nidiffer of&nbsp; Atchison in the 1900 Block of Harper Drive, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Nidiffer is being held on a requested charge&nbsp; domestic battery.&nbsp;

In 2017 police arrested him twice on requested charges of driving while license canceled or suspended, according to online jail records. In 2016, he was jailed for criminal damage to property.&nbsp;

He is being held on a $2500 bond, according to online jail records.

And, this time, Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp on the

“It has been our distinct honor and privilege to host the
summer training camp of the Kansas Chiefs for the last 12 years,” Missouri
Western President Elizabeth Kennedy welcomes Chiefs President Mark Donovan back
to St. Joseph.

This is a new experience for new Mosaic CEO Mike Poore, who
says sponsorship of Chiefs Training Camp is a natural for Mosaic. 

“We’re proud to partner with (the) Kansas City Chiefs and
officially open the start of Chiefs’ camp,” Poore tells Donovan. “Welcome back
to St. Joseph and I look forward to this first training camp for me.”’

This is the first training camp since coronavirus pandemic
restrictions have been lifted, the first returning to normal.

Donnovan promises a camp to match the anticipation of that return
to normal.

“There’s an excitement and energy about this town and while it’s
exciting for us to be here for a couple of weeks, it’s really important for us
as an organization to get back and to be a part of St. Joe,” Donovan says in
the news conference held on the Missouri Western campus to open camp.

Kennedy points out this year’s camp is the first to take place
after coronavirus pandemic restrictions have been lifted.

says, adding that includes her favorite part:&nbsp;
seeing children line up for autographs.

Training camp begins Wednesday when practice will be open to
season ticket holders only. Most tickets will be free, though there are three
practices that will cost $5. Parking costs $5. A clear-bag policy will be
enforced.

Donovan says this training camp will be bigger and better.

“We keep saying back to normal,” Donovan says. “The reality is
it’s going to be more exciting than it’s ever been. We’ve created more opportunities.”

Though free for nearly every practice, tickets must be

Chiefs return as training camp at MWSU returns to normal

Two different perspectives drive the Republicans running for
the newly constituted Missouri House District Two and a bit of the emerging national
Republican split is showing up in the race.

Incumbent Randy Railsback of Hamilton says his focus is on the
state of Missouri, not the politics of Washington, D.C.

“We focus on the state,” Railsback tells host Barry Birr on
the KFEQ Hotline. “There’s nothing we can do about the mess in Washington, D.C.,
except vote in November. But we’re focusing on the state level and I have seen
over and over where I feel like the state has not been a player at the table
and has not been a good participant. And I want to make sure that we can say (the)
state of Missouri is active, we’re in the game, we’re helping our communities
be competitive.”

But, his Republican challenger, Mazzie Boyd of Hamilton, wants
to promote former President Donald Trump’s agenda in Jefferson City, saying she
got involved in politics during the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

“And Donald Trump was always the one that I always came back
to, because he was saying things that were different than any other
establishment candidate had previously,” Boyd tells Birr during her time on the
KFEQ Hotline.

“But then, when Donald Trump came off the escalator, I was like,
oh my gosh, this is the guy that we need, someone that really has some grit and
is super tough,” Boyd says.

Boyd served in the Trump White House as well as in the
communications department for Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

Railsback, past director of both the Northwest Regional Council
of Governments and the Green Hills Regional Planning Commission, is coming off
his first two-year term representing the old Missouri House District Eight,
comprised of Caldwell, Clinton, Ray, and Clay Counties. The new Missouri House District
Two retains Caldwell County, but then covers Daviess, Harrison, Worth, and
Grundy Counties.

comprised of Caldwell, Clinton, Ray, and Clay Counties. The new Missouri House District
Two retains Caldwell County, but then covers Daviess, Harrison, Worth, and
Grundy Counties.

NW Missouri state representative faces primary challenge

A hometown NFL athlete is hoping to help bring awareness to a cause close to his heart.  

Elijah Lee signed this past offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs and when Mosaic Life Care asked him to be this year’s player sponsor for Training Camp he had one stipulation, the Bartlett Center had to be involved.  

Lee grew up in St. Joseph around the playgrounds of the Bartlett Center.  He says the partnership with Mosaic to raise awareness for the center is big.  

"Because it takes a unity, as opposed to just saying one I could come back and just talk about the Bartlett Center, but having an organization like Mosaic and an organization like the Chiefs that are willing to help hand in hand, that's big," Lee tells reporters. "Because it shines light on bigger situations, on the situation." 

Lee says being from midtown, or as he calls it the east side of St. Joe, he knows how hard it is to spread awareness of the center. 

Lee says his biggest goal with the children at the Bartlett Center is to help them know there are better days ahead.  

"Have big dreams and reach for those goals don't let anyone tell you no, because for me it was like, coming from St. Joe, every day you could talk about going to the NFL or going to go do this, but now that I made it a reality and I used to tell like my friends in middle school and elementary, I'm going to make it one day," Lee says. "And the funniest thing I used to say is you're going to be eating popcorn while I'm on the TV." 

And Lee says that joke continues today, asking his friends how the popcorn tastes.

Executive Director of the Bartlett Center LaTonya Williams says she's truly grateful that Lee thought about the center, and was in disbelief when she got the call.  

"After I was called and they mentioned that he was only interested in being a spokesperson if it involved us at the Bartlett Center, I was like is this a joke," Williams laughs. "I was completely blown over." 

Williams said even her staff didn't believe her when she told them about the call and email about the partnership.  Williams said it all became real when Mosaic came seeking a tour of the center.  

Lee holds the Bartlett Center close to his heart because he grew up in midtown St. Joseph playing on the very playgrounds and in the gym of the Bartlett Center.

An Oregon, Missouri teenager drowned in the Missouri River this weekend
after coming to the aid of his brother.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 18-year-old Alexander
Harris went under the water and didn't resurface after coming to the aid of a younger man struggling in the water.

The patrol reports Harris and the other boy were swimming
in the Missouri River Saturday afternoon about a half mile north of Payne’s
Landing in Holt County.

A Facebook post from the family stated Harris kept his younger brother afloat until his mother could save him.

The Holt County Coroner pronounced Harris dead at the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 John Deere Buck 500 driven by William D. Mastin, 68, Winston, was northbound on private property just south south of Ridge Avenue one mile north of Winston.

The ATV was traveling over rough terrain, overturned and the driver was ejected. The vehicle came to rest on top of him.

Mastin was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported by the county coroner to Stith Funeral Home.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new accusations after an arrest.

On Thursday, police arrested 26-year-old JaDon O. Orr of Atchison on&nbsp; District Court warrants for domestic battery and criminal trespass in connection with an incident on May 9, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Police arrested Orr twice in 2019 for Kansas Department of Corrections parole violations. He has previous felony convictions for criminal damage to property and battery of a corrections officer, according to the KDOC. Orr&nbsp;is being held on a $1500 bond.

The first two weeks of July saw an 
avalanche of spending in the Missouri Senate race, with new political 
action committees joining the fray and the two top-spending Democrats 
expanding the markets they are mining for votes.

Pre-primary reports to the Federal 
Election Commission, covering the period from July 1 to July 13, were 
due Thursday. Those reports, along with daily independent spending 
reports, show the total cost of the race is now almost $43 million.

The last round of reports, which covered the period through June 30, showed <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/07/19/anti-greitens-pac-tops-spending-as-missouri-u-s-senate-race-cost-approaches-30m/">spending was just under $30 million</a> as the month began.

Television advertising continues to 
consume the greatest share of spending. The Independent’s ad sale 
tracking shows spending on full-power stations at $16.4 million as of 
Friday, up about $1.7 million since last weekend.

One of the biggest non-television 
campaigns is being run by Americans for Prosperity Action, which has 
pumped $1.6 million into a get-out-the-vote campaign on behalf of 
Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who is seeking the GOP nomination.&nbsp;

The biggest spender in the race <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/missouri-mega-donor-nebraska-governor-bankrolling-pac-attacking-eric-greitens/">continues to be Show Me Values PAC</a>,
 which has used more than half of the $7.4 million it has spent on 
television ads attacking another GOP Senate contender, former Gov. Eric 
Greitens.

There are two PACs that have made ad 
buys promoting Greitens – Team PAC and Missouri First Action – spending 
about $2.2 million total, but neither has large sums remaining to match 
the opposition campaign.

Of the candidates – 21 on the 
Republican side and 11 in the Democratic primary – only three 
Republicans and two Democrats are buying broadcast television ads.

Schmitt, who is only buying time in 
St. Louis, is the only candidate who has&nbsp; reduced some of his purchases.
 Schmitt canceled $77,925 in ads and reduced other buys by $78,405, 
cutting his total purchase for the St. Louis market to $386,000.

An independent PAC, Save Missouri 
Values, has been buying time in support of Schmitt throughout the state,
 spending $2.9 million on TV time and $5.1 million overall.

Save Missouri Values, which like 
other PACs can accept unlimited donations, took in $443,000 in the first
 two weeks of the month and had nearly $2 million on hand as of July 
13.&nbsp;

Schmitt’s campaign, which must abide 
by the $2,900 per person contribution limit like other candidate 
campaigns, raised $81,804 in the first two weeks of the month and spent 
$538,000. Schmitt’s campaign treasury had just over $1 million for the 
final push to the Aug. 2 primary.

U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler and state 
Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz are the other two GOP candidates 
purchasing air time. Hartzler has made a few recent purchases, bumping 
her total TV spending to $1.4 million, while Schatz, who put $2 million 
of his own money into his campaign, has not made a new ad buy since 
June.

Hartzler raised $83,415 in the first 
two weeks of the month, spent $443,000 and had $1.5 million in the bank.
 Schatz raised only $405 in the period covered by the reports, spent 
just over $10,000 and had $1.3 million on hand.

There have been no public polls of 
the Republican race since late June, when Trafalgar Group showed 
Hartzler, Schmitt and Greitens in a statistical dead heat.

On the Democratic side, 
Anheuser-Busch beer heiress Trudy Busch Valentine is outspending rival 
Lucas Kunce by almost 5-1 on television ads. Fueled by $4 million <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/trudy-busch-valentine-reports-up-to-215m-in-wealth-30m-in-income-on-federal-filing/">from her personal fortune</a>, Valentine has spent $1.9 million on TV ads.

Kunce, who has raised $4.7 million, 
the most of any candidate committee and mainly in small donations, has 
increased his ad spending to almost $400,000, but is also spending large
 sums on digital advertising and other media.

Valentine, who made her initial ad 
buys in St. Louis and Kansas City, has added the Springfield and 
Columbia markets, often buying ads at a station a day after Kunce.

The only PAC buying ads in the 
Democratic race is the MissourI Voices Action Fund, which was formed 
last fall. It has spent $75,000 in the St. Louis market targeting 
Valentine.

In the three hotly contested 
Congressional primaries, spending has also picked up in recent weeks and
 PAC spending is also ramping up.

In the 1st District, where incumbent 
U.S. Rep. Cori Bush is being challenged by state Sen. Steve Roberts in 
the Democratic primary, spending by the two campaigns has topped $2.2 
million, the bulk of it from Bush.

But Roberts is outspending her on television, with $144,000 of ad purchases compared to $116,000 for Bush.

In the 4th District, where <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/07/15/immigration-abortion-take-center-stage-in-4th-congressional-district-gop-debate/">seven Republicans are vying for the nomination</a> to replace Hartzler, PACs are stepping in with big spending as the primary approaches.&nbsp;

Mark Alford, a former Kansas City 
news anchor, has benefited from $271,000 in ads in the Kansas City 
market purchased by a PAC called <a target="_blank" href="https://americandreamaction.com/updates/">American Dream Federal Action</a>, which focuses on economic and national security issues.

Alford’s campaign also has the largest television ad purchase in the district.

The School Freedom Fund, a 
conservative group opposed to critical race theory and COVID-19 
restrictions in schools, is attacking Alford and promoting state Sen. 
Rick Brattin with a $1.1 million ad buy in the Kansas City market.

In the 7th District of southwest 
Missouri, former state Sen. Jay Wasson is the biggest spender, at just 
over $1 million, and he has the biggest ad buy, almost $350,000. But 
Wasson is also the target of one of the biggest PAC ad campaigns in the 
district, a $659,000 by Club For Growth Action that tries to label him 
as “Romney Republican wrong for Congress.”

The only other Republican with a 
six-figure TV buy in the 7th District is state Sen. Eric Burlison, whose
 campaign has spent $192,000 on ads. Burlison, along with state Sen. 
Mike Moon, are targets of a PAC called Conservative Americans, which has
 spent $470,000 to attack them on state budget votes and saying they 
“sided with defund the police liberals.”

Fueled by $4 million <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/trudy-busch-valentine-reports-up-to-215m-in-wealth-30m-in-income-on-federal-filing/">from her personal fortune</a>, Valentine has spent $1.9 million on TV ads.Kunce, who has raised $4.7 million, 
the most of any candidate committee and mainly in small donations, has 
increased his ad spending to almost $400,000, but is also spending large
 sums on digital advertising and other media.Valentine, who made her initial ad 
buys in St. Louis and Kansas City, has added the Springfield and 
Columbia markets, often buying ads at a station a day after Kunce.The only PAC buying ads in the 
Democratic race is the MissourI Voices Action Fund, which was formed 
last fall. It has spent $75,000 in the St. Louis market targeting 
Valentine.In the three hotly contested 
Congressional primaries, spending has also picked up in recent weeks and
 PAC spending is also ramping up.In the 1st District, where incumbent 
U.S. Rep. Cori Bush is being challenged by state Sen. Steve Roberts in 
the Democratic primary, spending by the two campaigns has topped $2.2 
million, the bulk of it from Bush.But Roberts is outspending her on television, with $144,000 of ad purchases compared to $116,000 for Bush.In the 4th District, where <a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/07/15/immigration-abortion-take-center-stage-in-4th-congressional-district-gop-debate/">seven Republicans are vying for the nomination</a> to replace Hartzler, PACs are stepping in with big spending as the primary approaches.&nbsp;Mark Alford, a former Kansas City 
news anchor, has benefited from $271,000 in ads in the Kansas City 
market purchased by a PAC called <a target="_blank" href="https://americandreamaction.com/updates/">American Dream Federal Action</a>, which focuses on economic and national security issues.Alford’s campaign also has the largest television ad purchase in the district.The School Freedom Fund, a 
conservative group opposed to critical race theory and COVID-19 
restrictions in schools, is attacking Alford and promoting state Sen. 
Rick Brattin with a $1.1 million ad buy in the Kansas City market.In the 7th District of southwest 
Missouri, former state Sen. Jay Wasson is the biggest spender, at just 
over $1 million, and he has the biggest ad buy, almost $350,000. But 
Wasson is also the target of one of the biggest PAC ad campaigns in the 
district, a $659,000 by Club For Growth Action that tries to label him 
as “Romney Republican wrong for Congress.”The only other Republican with a 
six-figure TV buy in the 7th District is state Sen. Eric Burlison, whose
 campaign has spent $192,000 on ads. Burlison, along with state Sen. 
Mike Moon, are targets of a PAC called Conservative Americans, which has
 spent $470,000 to attack them on state budget votes and saying they

Pace of Mo. Senate spending accelerates as total approaches $43M

Elijah Lee started off as just a kid from St. Joseph and now in his sixth year in the NFL, he's playing for his hometown team and helping out his community. &nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care announced Lee as its player sponsor during Chiefs Training Camp, and in taking the job, Lee had one major cause on his mind, helping the Bartlett Center&nbsp;

"The bigger picture is that they don't have the means right now to keep it or get it to where it needs to go and I'm just raising awareness right now to get it where it needs to go," Lee tells reporters. "And hopefully, more people around St. Joe come and visit the center, see what it's about, understand what it's about, and even spend some time with the kids."&nbsp;

Lee says he spent much of his childhood in St. Joseph outside the Bartlett Center on the Horace Mann Playground. &nbsp;

Lee spent his first two years of high school playing football and basketball for Central, before playing his last two years at Blue Springs High School.&nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care officials say when they approached Lee to be the player sponsor for this year's training camp his first response was “As long as we can highlight the Bartlett Center, mental health awareness, and setting goals.”&nbsp;

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman on drug charges after the search of a home.

On July 17 while on official duty, a sheriff's deputy identified the odor of&nbsp; burnt marijuana coming from inside a residence in Horton, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

The resident granted a consent search which resulted in the arrest of Anna Kaler, 35 Horton on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Kan. woman jailed after deputy smells marijuana coming from home

St. Joseph city officials want the discussion about the future of I-229 and the double decker bridge in downtown St. Joseph to keep the city priorities in mind.&nbsp;

City officials were presented MoDOT’s latest idea for the road earlier this week. &nbsp;

City Manager Brian Carter says the city’s main priority for 229 is to keep an efficient highway that travels from the north end to the south end. &nbsp;

"That's probably been one of the biggest, if not the biggest," Carter tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "Among other ones though are downtown access, access to the riverfront, you know everything that we rely on I-229 for now, kind of making sure that we still have that all though possibly in a different form."&nbsp;

Carter feels like the plan MoDOT presented to the city council fits the council’s priorities well.&nbsp;

"I think the plan that was presented a couple days ago probably best puts all those priorities in a line and presents them forward," Carter says. "It does not include the double decker bridge."&nbsp;

The plan proposes tearing down the double decker bridge, which MoDOT officials say would cost $60 million over the next 20 years to maintain. MoDOT’s proposal would replace the bridge with a four-lane parallel highway that would keep traffic flowing north and south.&nbsp; MoDOT hopes to have a final design in place by spring of next year.&nbsp;

Carter says following the presentation maintaining the interstate designation was no longer a priority for city council members&nbsp;

"Of course, an interstate is a good thing, but it also comes with some challenges," Carter explains. "Being an interstate, it has to meet more strict standards under federal rules and federal guidelines than it would as just a regular US highway, in the way that US 36 is a US highway."&nbsp;

The latest recommendation also calls for 229 to no longer be designated an interstate.&nbsp;

MoDOT and City officials seem close to agreement on I-229

St. Joseph state Rep. Brenda Shields is the only state
representative invited to go on an overseas trade mission with Gov. Mike
Parson.

Parson is leading the trade mission to Germany and the
Netherlands, pitching Missouri as a state in which to invest.

Shields says that when she speaks with German business leaders,
she can point to the success of Boehringer Ingelheim and Schuetz Container Systems
in St. Joseph as a reason to consider Missouri.

employs 900 and Schuetz employs 100 in St. Joseph.The Missouri trade mission plans to speak with 12 German companies
and seven from the Netherlands about the possibility of investing in Missouri.This is Parson’s fourth international trade mission and first
since the lifting of coronavirus pandemic sanctions. Parson says there is a lot
of interest from foreign companies considering investing in Missouri.“Matter of fact, we’ve had more requests for meetings that we
can go to,” Parson tells Missourinet. “We’re looking forward to it. We think we’re
going to have some good news when we come back.”<figure>

with both of these countries to help them expand their presence in Missouri,”
Shields says.Shields it’s important to get out and meet leaders in person
after the coronavirus pandemic shut down such trips. “I think all deals in person are more successful,” according
to Shields. “I think being able to talk to people face-to-face, to be able to
work with them, to be able to shake their hand, and make those types of
connections are incredibly important. I think that this is long overdue.”Missouri exports nearly $700 million in goods to Germany and
more than $223 million to the Netherlands.Members of the trade mission plan to meet with leaders in
pharmaceuticals, agriculture, recycling, and other industries.The trip is being funded by the Hawthorn Foundation, a Missouri
