Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt is the Republican nominee to succeed retiring U.S. Senator Roy Blunt.

Schmitt, in a crowded field of 21 candidates, received 45.1% of the vote. Schmitt defeated Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler and former Missouri governor Eric Greitens.

Hartzler had 22% of the vote, while Greitens had 18.9%.

Schmitt will face Trudy Busch Valentine on the Democrat side in November. Valentine won a tight race over Lucas Kunce, receiving 43.1% of the vote. Kunce received 38.4%.

Incumbent Sam Graves won the Republican nomination for U.S. Representative in Missouri's 6th Congressional district, garnering 76% of the vote.

In a state senate race in northwest Missouri, state Rep. Rusty Black won the District 12 race big, raking in 64.8% percent of the vote. State Rep. J. Eggleston finished second with 25.9% with former state Rep. Delus Johnson coming in third.

Rancher and businessman Jeff Farnan emerged from a crowded
field to claim the Republican nomination for the 1st Missouri state
Representative District of far northwestern Missouri.

Farnan won the Republican primary Tuesday easily, receiving
3,338 votes or slightly more than 47% of the total cast. Military
veteran Alan Bennett finished a distant second with 1,795 votes, a
bit more than 25% of the vote.

Farnan will face Democrat Jess Piper in November.

There was an upset in another Missouri state representative
race.

Incumbent Representative Randy Railsback lost the Republican
primary to political newcomer Mazzie Boyd. Boyd won an overwhelming victory in
the Republican primary, getting more than 60% of the vote. The
unofficial vote count is 4,653 to 2,881. Boyd faces Democrat
Lois Pontius in November.

Andrew County voters elected a prosecuting attorney and
associate circuit judge in Tuesday’s primary election.

Former assistant prosecuting attorney Monica Morrey won the
prosecuting attorney race, receiving nearly 57% of the vote. Lawyer Emily
Bauman won nearly 58% of the vote Tuesday, winning the associate circuit
judge race. No Democrat filed for the offices. The two Republicans face no opposition
in the November General Election.

A measure from the St. Joseph School Board to help increase teacher pay passed by a large margin in Tuesday's primary election. &nbsp;

The measure, which will also help with heating and cooling upgrades as well as maintenance costs, passed 71% to 29%.&nbsp;

School Board President David Foster says he would have been happy to just see the measure pass, but he was tremendously excited to see it win by such a large margin&nbsp;

"To see us win pretty much every precinct means that our town is not as divided as some people say we are, we all want the same things," Foster tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And so, when we really came together, and that's what it took we had to come together on this campaign it wasn't a one man show, but we did that and that shows that we can do it in the future."&nbsp;

The passing of the measure will extend the schools tax levy for six years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

District Superintendent Gabe Edgar says he always tells his people there are great opportunities in St. Joseph and thanks voters for coming out and standing behind the district. &nbsp;

"We've been in some clouds that have been a little gray and so at the end of the day when those clouds are gray and the sunshine comes out, I think the one thing I would tell this community is I appreciate it 100% and we're going to do good things," Edgar says.&nbsp;

Edgar says he was confident the measure would pass but he never thought it would win by such a large margin. &nbsp;

Edgar says now that the measure has passed the district can move onto bigger issues such as prioritizing attendance, discipline and communication.&nbsp;

Foster says he was also confident the measure would pass, but stayed well aware that nothing is for certain. &nbsp;

"If it would have passed by 55% again, I would have been happy, but I think I'll be able to sleep tonight knowing that it didn't just barely pass, I think it passed by a large majority, and that makes me feel good because it feels like the people that we represent are really behind us," Foster says.&nbsp;

Foster says now that the measure has passed and the school board knows the money is there, they'll be able to move onto other issues that the school district faces.&nbsp;

St. Joseph School District supporters overwhelmingly approve tax levy extension

St. Joseph School District voters overwhelmingly approved
extending the current 61-cent levy while Buchanan County voters approved
extension of the county use tax.

The Buchanan County Clerk’s office reports 24.5% of county
registered voters cast ballots in the Tuesday primary.

The St. Joseph School District READ proposal, which would
extend the current school levy for six years, received 7,645 “Yes” votes to
only 3,138 “No” votes; a split of nearly 71% to 29%.

Buchanan County voters approved extending the use tax for
another 10 years with 7,218 voting in favor and 4,960 voting against the
measure; a 59% to 41% split.

Retired dentist Scott Nelson will be the Republican nominee
for Presiding Buchanan County Commissioner. Nelson won 5,077 voters, a bit more
than 61% of the vote, with retired Xerox executive Al Purcell garnering 3,052
votes, or 37%. Nelson faces Democrat Andrew Gibson in November.

St. Joseph school levy, Buchanan County tax both pass in primary election

HOLT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Mack truck driven by Dane E. Hawk, 54, Maitland, was westbound on MO 113 four miles south of Maitland.

The truck traveled off the north side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The truck returned to the road, began to skid, traveled into the eastbound lanes, traveled off the south side of the road and overturned.

A private vehicle transported Hawk to Urgent Care in St. Joseph. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Parts of Gene Field Road will be closed for a bridge replacement beginning Monday August 8th.&nbsp;

Beginning August 8th Gene Field Road between Ashland Avenue and Indian Trail Drive will be closed for a bridge replacement over Northeast Parkway.&nbsp;

Additionally, Northeast Parkway, from Ashland Avenue to Northeast Parkway, will also be closed.

Detour routes will be posted.&nbsp; The bridge replacement project and associated roadway work is scheduled to be completed in February of next year.&nbsp;

Drivers are asked to exercise caution while driving through work zones for their safety and the safety of working crews.&nbsp;

The bridge replacement is part of the Bonds for Bridges program, a voter approved $20 Million general obligation bond to repair and replace aging bridges as well as other transportation infrastructure.

Polling places around St. Joseph are now open for today's primary election. &nbsp;

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack Garvey says based on her research voter turnout is expected to be low&nbsp;

"What I usually do is I look what happened two years ago, or four even, just to do an average of the turnout and I'm looking at probably a 30% turnout from an average of both the 2020 and 2018 elections," Baack Garvey tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;

Baack Garvey says she would like to see that number end higher, but unfortunately&nbsp;

"You know, I don't have the power to get the people out there to vote," she says.&nbsp;

Baack Garvey says local issues on the ballot could drive more people to come and vote&nbsp;

"A contested presiding commissioner race that has been quite a good campaign with both of those candidates," Baack Garvey explains. "And of course, anything locally that has to do with our school district, I think that will always help the turnout, it's just getting them out there to vote."&nbsp;

Former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens made a brief stop in St. Joseph at Rosecrans Memorial Airport today as part of a state fly around. &nbsp;

Greitens, who resigned as governor, declined to answer a question posed to him: who voters should trust, him or his ex-wife who has accused him of abuse&nbsp;

"Well, you know what's really clear is that President Trump came out and he said last night as you saw Eric Schmitt's campaign is a campaign rooted in great dishonesty," Greitens tells reporters. "And the fact is every honest journalist whose looked at this has already seen the records, that the doctor, the dentist, the therapist, and the mediator already said all of these allegations were false."&nbsp;

Greitens also accuses Republican primary opponent Eric Schmitt of orchestrating a smear campaign against him. &nbsp;

"And as President Trump came out and said just last night, Eric Schmitt's campaign was a campaign rooted in tremendous dishonesty, you've got fake polls, you've got false allegations, and what's so fantastic is to see the way the people of Missouri see through those lies," Greitens says.&nbsp;

Greitens is part of a crowded Republican field that also includes Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler and Congressman Billy Long vying to replace retiring US Senator Roy Blunt.&nbsp; 21 Republicans are running for the seat.&nbsp;

A former business executive and a retired dentist face off on
the Republican primary ballot Tuesday for Buchanan County Presiding
Commissioner.

Retired Xerox executive Al Purcell of St. Joseph says he entered
the race, because he believes he can make a difference.

“I’m not saying that from an ego aspect,” Purcell tells host
Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “Based upon my background, my experience, operating
as a citizen within our community and at the state level, I’m convinced with
the experience and the connections that I’ve made over these years that I can
clearly make a difference and help our community.”

Purcell says it will take creativity and innovation for the
county to turn around its population decline.

“Think bold and be able to put people to the table and then
reach out and talk about this as a destination and how do we build this
particular asset here?”

Purcell faces Scott Nelson on the primary ballot after recently
retiring as a St. Joseph dentist.

Nelson claims public safety as his number one priority,
stating he has always respected law enforcement.

“Officers are passionate about their job,” Nelson tells Birr
during his time on the KFEQ Hotline. “But their main goal; two:&nbsp; to keep us safe and to get back home after
their shift. So, I want to get them every possible tool that they need to keep
them safe so they can keep us safe.”

Nelson says he learned to serve people in his profession and
learned to spend carefully running his office.

“Tax payers and their money, how it’s being spent, it needs to
be looked at real carefully,” Nelson says.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Andrew
Gibson in November.

Two Republicans on primary ballot for Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner

For two days AFL-CIO Community Services in St. Joseph will distribute shoes to youth in need from the Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph. &nbsp;

The Soles 4 Christ distribution will begin tomorrow at 9am and will run until 7pm.&nbsp; The event will be at the same time on Wednesday. &nbsp;

Community Services Executive Director Nichi Seckinger says the number of shoes donated was slightly less than normal. &nbsp;

But honestly, we were kind of anticipating that with the way the economy is kind of turning out and we know the cost of things has gone up, I don't know that people are horribly feeling the pinch quite yet, but I think everyone is anticipating it so they're being a little gun shy," Seckinger tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, we were thinking that we would see that."&nbsp;

Seckinger says luckily Community Services had enough of a backlog of shoes from last year to have around two-thousand pairs to distribute. &nbsp;

Seckinger says pre-COVID the agency served nearly 12 to 14 hundred students.&nbsp; Those numbers went down the past two years she says, but now. &nbsp;

"We're anticipating going back to those numbers this year, again the economy being a bit of an issue and things being so much more expensive now, we think we're going to see more families turn to us to help offset that expense," Seckinger explains. "And, with people being a little bit more relaxed around the COVID protocols and not being quite as fearful I think that we're going to see more people come out."&nbsp;

The two-day event will take place Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 7pm at the Civic Arena.&nbsp; Students in Buchanan, Andrew, Clinton, Dekalb, and Doniphan counties are eligible. &nbsp;

Seckinger says anyone no matter their income can come to the event to get shoes. &nbsp;

"So, if you're middle class and you have the funds but it's going to maybe put you a little behind or lower the bank account to uncomfortable levels, you know there are so many other expenses associated with getting these kids into school, that we would really rather you come down and get shoes because it's going to save you money in the long run," Seckinger says.&nbsp;

 </figure>By MATT PIKE&nbsp;St. Joseph Post&nbsp;For two days AFL-CIO Community Services in St. Joseph will distribute shoes to youth in need from the Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph. &nbsp;The Soles 4 Christ distribution will begin tomorrow at 9am and will run until 7pm.&nbsp; The event will be at the same time on Wednesday. &nbsp;Community Services Executive Director Nichi Seckinger says the number of shoes donated was slightly less than normal. &nbsp;But honestly, we were kind of anticipating that with the way the economy is kind of turning out and we know the cost of things has gone up, I don't know that people are horribly feeling the pinch quite yet, but I think everyone is anticipating it so they're being a little gun shy," Seckinger tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, we were thinking that we would see that."&nbsp;Seckinger says luckily Community Services had enough of a backlog of shoes from last year to have around two-thousand pairs to distribute. &nbsp;Seckinger says pre-COVID the agency served nearly 12 to 14 hundred students.&nbsp; Those numbers went down the past two years she says, but now. &nbsp;"We're anticipating going back to those numbers this year, again the economy being a bit of an issue and things being so much more expensive now, we think we're going to see more families turn to us to help offset that expense," Seckinger explains. "And, with people being a little bit more relaxed around the COVID protocols and not being quite as fearful I think that we're going to see more people come out."&nbsp;The two-day event will take place Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 7pm at the Civic Arena.&nbsp; Students in Buchanan, Andrew, Clinton, Dekalb, and Doniphan counties are eligible. &nbsp;Seckinger says anyone no matter their income can come to the event to get shoes. &nbsp;"So, if you're middle class and you have the funds but it's going to maybe put you a little behind or lower the bank account to uncomfortable levels, you know there are so many other expenses associated with getting these kids into school, that we would really rather you come down and get shoes because it's going to save you money in the long run," Seckinger says.&nbsp;Volunteers are still needed for the event as well.&nbsp; For more information you can contact Community Services<figure>

Proposition READ on Tuesday’s ballot proposes continuing the
61-cent levy for another six years. It would not require a tax increase.

School Board President David Foster points out the board voted
unanimously to place the levy issue on the August primary ballot.

“I think part of the reason why was we’ll have less pushback
sticking with 61 cents, but this supports teachers’ salaries and it also
supports preventative maintenance,” Foster tells Barry Birr on the KFEQ
Hotline. “In that unanimous vote, I think that says a lot about why we probably
have no formal opposition. And we have a lot of endorsements and a lot of
people that have supported this.”

The levy is expected to raise $6.9 million annually. It would
sunset in six years.

The St. Joseph School Board proposes spending the money on
teacher and staff salaries, heating and cooling upgrades, and maintenance
costs.

Superintendent Gabe Edgar says continuation of the current levy
will help address teacher salaries, but also will help address problems
plaguing the district.

“Attendance is our biggest problem, right now,” Edgar says. “I
do think we will have a pretty good grasp on it moving into the 2022-23 school
year.”

Discipline ranks second on Edgar’s priorities. But attendance
and discipline are merely means to an end.

“We talk about attendance. We talk about discipline and we
talk about communications and all of those things have to with improving
academics,” according to Edgar.

Edgar says though a majority of the money will go toward
teacher salaries, it will take more than money to attract and retain good
teachers.

“I say this a lot, especially to the board of education, we’re
going to have to start thinking outside of the box,” Edgar says. “We’re going
to have to do something different than Platte County’s doing and Liberty’s doing
and North Kansas City’s doing. In order to stay up in the game, that’s what we
have to do.”

The St. Joseph School Board says the money will be used mainly
to pay for teacher and staff salaries. It also will provide money to hire nine
support staff to lower classroom sizes and come to the aid of classroom
teachers. Two school psychologists will be hired under the board plan, as well
as four additional school safety officers. Other safety measures are planned
for numerous school buildings. Deferred maintenance throughout the district
will be completed if the issue passes, according to the school board.

Extension of St. Joseph school levy to be decided on August primary ballot

A 50-year-old man faces numerous criminal charges after barricading
himself in a St. Joseph residence and holding off officers for nearly 24 hours
before surrendering.

The incident at 709 South 16th ended peacefully
enough when Harry Newton Ritzinger surrendered. The St. Joseph Police
Department accuses Ritzinger of firing shots at officers responding to the
scene in the early morning hours of Sunday.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports no one was wounded in
the incident, though multiple shots were fired from the residence.

area residents to safety as shots were being fired.

Ritzinger was taken into custody for felony non-support,
unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, and assault on law
enforcement.

According to the department, Ritzinger allegedly fired several
rounds at the Special Response Team that arrived on the scene. Police say the
SRT used several tactical methods to coax Ritzinger out, but he wouldn’t budge.
As the day wore on, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Tactical Unit came to the
scene to relieve the St. Joseph SRT.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Toyota Matrix driven by Jacob T. Lewis, 25, Kansas City, Mo., was northbound on Interstate 35 five miles north of Winston.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the car as it traveled off the inside shoulder. The car overturned, traveled across southbound lanes and came to rest on its top.

Daviess County ambulance transported Lewis and a passenger Hallie A. Dickson, 22, Kansas City, Mo., to Cameron Regional Medical Center. They were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

2 hospitalized after car overturns in Daviess County

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after his third arrest in five months.

On Thursday, police arrested 44-year-old Matthew S. Davis of Leavenworth on a Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear in court, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

In April Davis was jailed on requested drug and driving violations and in March on a warrant and for meth possession, according to online jail records.

HOLTON –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly continued her statewide economic development tour, ‘Prosperity on the Plains,’ in the northeast Kansas community of Holton Friday. She joined Jackson County Chamber of Commerce leaders to tour a local family- and veteran-owned small business, More Than Lemons Hot Glass, according to a statement from the governor's office.

More Than Lemons is a hot glass art store and workshop that features collections from Kansas artists. In addition to the glass art store, the Lemons family also runs an AirBnB.

Governor's Prosperity on the Plains tour stops in NE Kansas

A 19-year-old St. Joseph man and a 14-year-old St. Joseph
youth have been killed in a head-on collision south of St. Joseph early Friday morning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports a pick-up being
driven north by 46-year-old Joshua Gladieux of Leavenworth crossed the centerline
of Route A about four miles south of St. Joseph and hit a car traveling south, driven
by 20-year-old Alexis Lewis of St. Joseph.

Pronounced dead at the scene was 19-year-old Alexander Brown
of St. Joseph, a passenger in the car. A 14-year-old boy, not named by the
patrol, died in the wreck. He also was a passenger in the car. Lewis suffered
serious injuries and has been transported by helicopter to KU Medical Center.

Gladieux suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

AFL-CIO Community Services is asking for volunteers to step up to help distributing shoes during next week's Soles 4 Christ distribution event. &nbsp;

Executive Director Nichi Seckinger says about 20 to 30 more people are needed for the event around the 3pm to 7pm period.&nbsp;

"We usually ask volunteers to sign up in at least two-hour increments just because of the way the program runs and to keep it smooth we're not trading people out all the time and having to stop mid-kid, so we ask them to do two-hour increments," Seckinger tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "The end of the day for us is pretty open and we've had some folks unfortunately have to reach out to us and they're unable to volunteer now because they've tested positive for COVID."&nbsp;

"So, we've had, in addition to needing those folks, we've had a handful of people have to call in and cancel because they're unable to attend because they are sick," Seckinger adds. "So, we're seeing these numbers actually as we've had a few people call in to sign up we've lost people as well so it's kind of turned into a vicious animal, it's where we're at now though, with COVID in our lives it's what we're stuck with."&nbsp;

The event on Tuesday and Wednesday will run from 9am to 7pm at the Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph.&nbsp; Volunteers are also needed to help unload shoes on Monday evening. &nbsp;

"So, we're seeing these numbers actually as we've had a few people call in to sign up we've lost people as well so it's kind of turned into a vicious animal, it's where we're at now though, with COVID in our lives it's what we're stuck with."&nbsp;The event on Tuesday and Wednesday will run from 9am to 7pm at the Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph.&nbsp; Volunteers are also needed to help unload shoes on Monday evening. &nbsp;People interested in volunteering can contact Community Services to learn about available volunteering opportunities.&nbsp;

A grant worth 200-thousand dollars received by Second Harvest from the USDA will help fund the agencies mobile food pantries. &nbsp;

Second Harvest Chief Development Officer Michelle Fagerstone says the grant helped match funds Second Harvest had put up for its Fresh Mobile Food Pantry.&nbsp;

"It is covering 20 communities in the rural area in northwest Missouri and I'm not 100% at this point in time the exact percentage that is going to each community, but every community that we applied for received some," Fagerstone tells reporters&nbsp;

Second Harvest welcomed USDA officials to St. Joseph earlier this week to tour its facility and speak to volunteers. &nbsp;

Fagerstone says it’s always good to see USDA officials in town adding that the officials coming to visit shows how much they are listening to the needs of rural communities.&nbsp;

Second Harvest officials applied for the three-year loan last year and got notified earlier this spring that the money had been received.&nbsp; With the first year completed Second Harvest is eligible for reimbursement of the first year. &nbsp;

Fagerstone says the grant was applied for because of Second Harvests operating budget of four million dollars.&nbsp;

"We need as many grants to come in as we possibly can to help with our funding and any grant that comes through that we qualify for, we will be applying for," Fagerstone says. "So, there's not one that's left out if it's available then we apply for it, that doesn't necessarily mean we always get it but we do apply for a lot of grants."&nbsp;

The grant money will help service Second Harvests fresh mobile food pantry.&nbsp; Second Harvest serves 19 counties in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.&nbsp;

USDA Rural Housing Service Administrator Joaquin Altoro praised Second Harvest for its efficiency in serving the community.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Second Harvest Chief Development Officer Michelle Fagerstone says that efficiency is in part because of the mobile food pantries Second Harvest recently eliminated. &nbsp;

"And which ones they were going to, not necessarily eliminate, but they weren't going to be held every single month," Fagerstone explains. "So, some of those communities that are no longer going to be held every single month will receive a food drop they'll do a pantry, a fresh mobile pantry, once a quarter or twice a year at those particular communities."&nbsp;

Fagerstone says this grant will not help Second Harvest in bringing those pantries back. &nbsp;

Beginning August 1st Second Harvest will provide between 20 and 24 mobile pantries a month.&nbsp;

Second Harvest mobile food pantries receive boost from USDA grant

Five Republicans are on the primary ballot for the First
Missouri State Representative District Tuesday.

Holly Cronk of Skidmore says she will take the lead when the
opportunity arises.

“Sometimes you don’t have to be the leader, sometimes you need
to be the team member and be a part of the result that you’re pushing for,”
Cronk tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “But, I’m not afraid to take
the lead.”

Cronk works with Make It Maryville and Northwest Missouri
Docudrama.

As for Jeff Farnan of Stanberry, he sees listening as
important, both in the district and in Jefferson City.

“You have to listen to not only your constituents, but also
the other people that are helping represent their districts,” Farnan tells Birr
on the KFEQ Hotline.

Farnan runs a cow-calf operation as well as owns an eyeglass
shop.

Michelle Horner of King City calls herself a ‘Momma Bear.’

“If we don’t fight for education and for our kids, as a ‘Momma
Bear,’ I’m willing to fight and do everything I can for our kids,” Horner says
during her visit with Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

Horner says if state government doesn’t look after the welfare
of children, nothing else matters.

Alan Bennett of Barnard, a 31-year military veteran, says he’d
put his experience to work for the district.

“In my military experience, I have worked with big egos,”
Bennett tells Birr on the Hotline. “General officers don’t take ‘No’ for an
answer. They want solutions. And that’s what I will work to provide.”

Bennett is the former Nodaway County DARE Board President and
works for the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Jasper Logan of Burlington Junction is making his first
political run, pledging to follow the blueprint left by the Founders to create
a country with limits on government.

“And the people would be free and have rights,” Logan tells
Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “I think we’ve strayed from that a little bit and I’d
like to see our country get back to that foundational principle”
