JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two women on drug allegations.

Just after 11a.m. March 9, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested two individuals after a Jackson County Sheriff’s K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics within an Acura passenger vehicle near Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found methamphetamine, psilocybin mushrooms, and drug paraphernalia.

The driver and registered owner,&nbsp;Paula Louise Michael, 61, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The front seat passenger, Jessica Maria Espinoza, 62, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kansas deputy found magic mushrooms, meth during traffic stop

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement investigating a fatal hit and run pedestrian incident that occurred just after 3p.m. Monday in Kansas City have identified the victim as 35-year-old Megan L. Aldridge.

She was walking on the outside shoulder of eastbound Interstate 70 near the exit ramp to Paseo, According to Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

An unknown vehicle struck Aldridge and then&nbsp; left the area without stopping. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 This is fatality #11 in KCMO compared to #21 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez. Police have not released the name of the&nbsp; victim or additional details.

Police ID woman who died after I-70 hit-and-run

TOPEKA —Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a statement Wednesday about a “Black Mass” event scheduled for March 28, at the Kansas Statehouse.

The Satanic Grotto announced on social media they organized an event for inside the Capitol building that day.

In a statement from office, Governor Kelly wrote, "I have been informed about concerns regarding an event at the Statehouse on March 28, and I share those concerns.&nbsp; There are more constructive ways to protest and express disagreements without insulting or denigrating sacred religious symbols."

"However, as governor, I also have a duty to protect protesters’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression, regardless of how offensive or distasteful I might find the content to be."Since these rights are constitutionally protected, the Governor’s Office has limited authority to respond to such actions."

"That said, it is important to keep the Statehouse open and accessible to the public while ensuring all necessary health and safety regulations are enforced."Therefore, all events planned for March 28 will be moved outdoors to the grounds surrounding the Statehouse. Again, no protests will be allowed inside the Statehouse on March 28."

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement and fire officials are investigating the cause of fatal Kansas house fire.

On Tuesday morning, the Topeka Fire Department received reports of a house fire at 2418 SE Wisconsin Avenue, according to Fire Chief Alan Stahl.

 First arriving units reported a two-story residence fully involved with fire. During a search of the residence, firefighters located a man of the home deceased. The fire was quickly brought under control.

The Topeka Fire Deparment Investigations unit along with members of the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Investigations unit responded to the scene.&nbsp;&nbsp;The cause of the fire remains under investigation.&nbsp;The total loss associated with the fire is $17,700.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire crews also located and rescued a dog&nbsp; from inside of the residence. Two other dogs died. Authorities did not release the name of the man who died

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday said it’s cutting a substantial number of the agency’s staff through a “<a href="https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/workforce-restructuring/reductions-in-force-rif/" target="_blank">reduction in force</a>” process, bringing the department’s workforce to roughly half the number in place when President Donald Trump took office.

According to senior department officials speaking on background to reporters Tuesday evening, roughly 1,315 employees are subject to the initiative. The officials said the employees will get, starting Tuesday, 90 days full pay and benefits and will telework from Wednesday until March 21, when they are placed on administrative leave. &nbsp;

The sweeping cuts are part of a government-wide effort by Trump and billionaire White House adviser Elon Musk to reduce the federal workforce in an effort to slash government spending and reduce what they see as waste.

When Trump took office, the department had 4,133 employees. Following Tuesday’s announcement, the agency said it will have roughly 2,183 workers remaining. In the past several weeks, nearly 600 workers took voluntary resignation opportunities or retirement, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-initiates-reduction-force" target="_blank">Tuesday evening press release</a>.

The department also terminated 63 probationary employees in February, according to senior department officials.

The senior officials clarified that this staffing reduction will not impact the department’s ability to deliver on civil rights investigations, the rollout of the federal student aid application, Title I funding for low-income school districts and other statutorily mandated functions Congress has given the agency.

The senior officials confirmed earlier reporting that the department’s Washington-area office buildings would close Tuesday evening for safety reasons and would reopen Thursday.

“Today’s reduction in force reflects the Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers,” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement Tuesday.

“I appreciate the work of the dedicated public servants and their contributions to the Department. This is a significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system.”

Congressional Democrats and labor union leaders blasted the cuts Tuesday.

“Today’s staff eliminations are illegal, and they are a slap in the face to the dedicated public servants who work to make sure American children have access to a quality education,” Connecticut U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said. “No president or member of the executive branch has the authority to end public education, violate the law, and unilaterally steal dollars promised to students.”

Sen. Patty Murray, a Washington state Democrat who is the vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the cuts were meant to sidestep the legislative difficulty of eliminating the department itself.

“Donald Trump and Linda McMahon know they can’t abolish the Department of Education on their own but they understand that if you gut it to its very core and fire all the people who run programs that help students, families, and teachers, you might end up with a similar, ruinous result,” she said.

“Ultimately, what they want to do is clear: fire the people who help our kids and gut funding for our students, teachers, and schools. This is about breaking government for working families — and enriching billionaires like themselves in the process.”

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said “denuding an agency so it cannot function effectively is the most cowardly way of dismantling it.”&nbsp;

“The massive reduction in force at the Education Department is an attack on opportunity that will gut the agency and its ability to support students, throwing federal education programs into chaos across the country,” said Weingarten, who leads one of the largest teachers unions in the country.

Trump has targeted the Education Department specifically in the spending cuts initiative, repeatedly pledging to shutter the 45-year-old agency in his quest to move education “back to the states.”

The department had already seen dramatic shifts in the weeks since Trump took office — from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/elon-musks-doge-targets-us-department-education-millions-funding-cuts" target="_blank">major contract cuts</a>, to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/28/education-department-quit-00206765" target="_blank">staff buyouts</a>.

Other departments and agencies,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/vets-worry-trump-cuts-va-workforce-will-interrupt-benefits&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1741740543665052&amp;usg=AOvVaw2OZuQ95exTw4F_s_yKUi7E" target="_blank">including the Department of Veterans Affairs</a>, have also seen broad staffing decreases under Trump.

Last week, McMahon&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/new-secretary-linda-mcmahon-unveils-final-mission-us-department-education" target="_blank">sent an email to department employees</a>&nbsp;regarding the agency’s “final mission,” where she detailed her plans to “overhaul” the federal agency.

The former World Wrestling Entertainment executive told employees that the department’s “role in this new era of accountability is to restore the rightful role of state oversight in education and to end the overreach from Washington.”

McMahon said “this restoration will profoundly impact staff, budgets, and agency operations here at the Department.”

Even if Trump were to sign an executive order on dismantling the department, only Congress has the authority to shut it down. Any bill to close down the agency would face extreme difficulties getting through the narrowly GOP-controlled Senate, with at least 60 senators needed to advance past the filibuster.

In her statement, DeLauro dared Republican lawmakers to try to eliminate the department through legislation.

“To my Republican colleagues: if you want to eliminate the Department of Education, then put your name on a bill to do that,” she said. “Let your constituents see it. Let us debate it. Let us and the American people deliberate. Do not yield our authority, and the rule of law, to unchecked billionaires.”

Trump’s push to move education “back to the states” also comes as much of the funding and oversight of schools already occurs at the state and local levels. Legally, the department cannot control the curriculum of schools across the country.

U.S. Education Department to Cut Hundreds of Staff Members

JOHNSON COUNTY —Police and state revenue agents raided multiple convenience store during an investigation earlier this month.

On March 7, the Olathe Police Department, with the assistance of the Kansas Department of Revenue, conducted warrant services at four separate gas stations/vape shops within the City of Olathe, according to Olathe Police&nbsp;Sergeant John Moncayo reported on Tuesday.

The warrant services were due to alleged sales of illegal THC products. As a result, multiple alleged THC products were seized from all four locations. The items seized will be sent to the Johnson County Crime Lab for testing.&nbsp; Criminal charges are pending the results of the testing.

The incident occurred in&nbsp; the parking lot of Walmart located at 2600 NW Rochester Road, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.. 

A vehicle struck Thomas in the store parking lot. Medical personnel pronounced her deceased on scene.&nbsp; The incident remains under investigation.

Just before midnight March 8, a sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop on U.S. 77 at mile post 137 for an alleged traffic violation, according to a media release from the Morris County Sheriff.

The driver, later identified as a juvenile, refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Geary County Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers responded to assist. The vehicle avoided spike strips and attempted to exit off Interstate 70 through an east ditch, stuck a tree row and came to rest in an open field. Deputies found illegal drugs in the vehicle. The driver and a 27-year-old passenger identified as Jaquellin Demarquez Holland, 27, Wichita, were not injured.

Deputies arrested them. The teen driver is being held on requested charges that include flee or attempted to elude law enforcement, no proof of insurance and a number of other traffic violations.

Holland, who has a previous counterfeiting conviction, is being held on requested charges that include interference with law enforcement, possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or other stimulant and use/possess with intent to use-drug paraphernalia into human body.

Kansas felon, teen driver jailed after high-speed chase

OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just before 9p.m. on March 8, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Topeka Avenue in Lyndon for a traffic violation, according to Osage County Sheriff Chris Wells. During the stop, the deputy found illegal narcotics.

Devin G. Davis, 36, of Lyndon was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges that include Possession of methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and Possession of marijuana.&nbsp; He has previous convictions for burglary and drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Charlotte O’Hara, announced Tuesday she will seek the&nbsp;Republican nomination&nbsp;for&nbsp;governor&nbsp;in 2026, according to a media release.

O’Hara, a business woman and conservative Republican, stated in the release, she "is done with Kansas being the high tax point on the prairie. As Governor, she will focus on reining in state spending and ludicrous corporate welfare, ban DEI and get schools back to education.

&nbsp;Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly's second term is nearing an end. Kelly is term-limited from running again in 2026. In January,&nbsp;Kansas Secretary of State <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/ec164f8e-f8d7-4438-9c64-8f8ebaa1c7ea">Scott Schwab of Overland Park announced </a>his intention&nbsp;to run for governor.

O’Hara has long fought corporate welfare/tax incentives, which increase property taxes for homeowners and small businesses, according to the media release from her campaign. 

O’Hara is a past Republican Party 3rd District Chairwoman and served in the Kansas House (2011-2012). She voted against Governor Brownback’s 7.5% increase in the 2012 General Fund budget and blew the whistle on Brownback’s acceptance of the federal Early Innovator Grant money to build the IT infrastructure for ObamaCare in Kansas.

O’Hara (2021-2025) served as Johnson County Commissioner, District 3, "where she refused to capitulate to COVID masks and vaccine mandates." She tirelessly fought against Democrat controlled Johnson County Commission’s spending frenzy.O’Hara emphasized, “The hidden increase of taxes through inflation has become extraordinarily draconian, especially property taxes.

Former state representative announces run for Kan. governor

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 3p.m. March 9, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2025 Toyota Camry at Columbine Drive on U.S. Hwy 75, just north of Holton, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver, James Leroy Parr, 46, of Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container.

Sheriff: Kansas man was transporting meth, open container

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol arrested two individuals, one on multiple felony accusations after they barricaded themselves in a home in 100 block of S. 17th St. for six and a half hours over the weekend.

Shortly after 3a.m. March 8, KCKPD Special Operations Unit responded to the home to assist KHP in serving a warrant, according to a media release.

 Despite numerous commands,36-year-old Javier Silva, a resident of Kansas City, Kan. and 51-year-old Salvadore Contreras, Jr., a resident of the home, refused to exit.

At approximately 4:42a.m., Silva exited on his own and was taken into custody without incident. Then, at approximately 9:11a.m., Contreras, also exited and was taken into custody without further incident.

 In addition to the arrests, authorities confiscated a significant amount of illegal drugs from the scene that tested positive for fentanyl .Both suspects are being held without bond in the Wyandotte County Jail. Silva is being held on a probation violation. Contreras, Jr. is being held on requested felony charges of distribution of stimulants; fleeing or attempting to elude/interference with a law enforcement officer; obstruct or resist in a felony case/interference with a law enforcement officer; and a traffic violation.

JEFFERSON CITY Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey secured a historic $24 billion judgment against the Chinese Communist Party for unleashing the COVID-19 pandemic — six times more than the previous largest judgment in Missouri history, according to a media release from the AG's office.

“This is a landmark victory for Missouri and the United States in the fight to hold China accountable for unleashing COVID-19 on the world,”&nbsp;said Attorney General Bailey. “China refused to show up to court, but that doesn’t mean they get away with causing untold suffering and economic devastation. We intend to collect every penny by seizing Chinese-owned assets, including Missouri farmland.”

The Federal court ruled that Missouri “has established this claim of damages through evidence satisfactory to the court,” proving that China caused and exacerbated the COVID-19 pandemic, harming Missourians. The ruling follows former Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s 2020 lawsuit against the Chinese Communist Party for obstructing the production, purchase, and export of critical medical equipment, including PPE, during the pandemic.

Missouri will now move to collect the $24 billion judgment and, if necessary, will work with the Trump Administration to identify and seize Chinese-owned assets — a critical step in protecting Missouri’s economy and national security.

Observant Kan. driver helps police catch intoxicated wrong-way driver

The pedestrian was walking on the outside shoulder of eastbound Interstate 70 near the exit ramp to Paseo, According to Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

An unknown vehicle struck the pedestrian and then&nbsp; left the area without stopping. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

DHS  launches new app to encourage illegals to self-deport

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a homicide identified the victim as 22-year-old&nbsp;Yancy Whitehead of Topeka and have made an arrest, according to&nbsp;Police LT Donna Eubanks.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On Sunday Police asked for help to locate a person of interest in the homicide. Just before midnight police reported the arrest of 49-year-old&nbsp;Robert Reyes, 49, of Topeka.&nbsp; He is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder, according to Eubanks.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday police responded to a reported shooting in the 2900 block of SE Freemont Road in Topeka, according to Police&nbsp;LT Donna Eubanks. First responders located Whitehead with life-threatening injuries. He was&nbsp; pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel.

Topeka Police were later notified of two other individuals that had arrived at an area hospital. One individual had life-threatening injuries and one a non-life-threatening injury.

This is the city’s 3rd homicide investigation of 2025.&nbsp;

Police capture suspect in killing of 22-year-old Kansas man

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a homicide in Kansas City, Missouri have made an arrest.

At approximately 9a.m. Saturday, Kansas City, Kansas Police were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Quindaro Blvd. to assist the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department in locating a homicide suspect from their city, according to a media release.

Just before 10a.m, the suspect, Justin J. Arbee, 25, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.

Arbee is accused of being involved in a Feb. 10, killing of 64-year-old Zulfiqar Ladhani, who was shot outside his store, Joe’s Liquor &amp; Convenience Store near the 8000 block of Hickman Mills Drive.

 </figure>WYANDOTTE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a homicide in Kansas City, Missouri have made an arrest.At approximately 9a.m. Saturday, Kansas City, Kansas Police were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Quindaro Blvd. to assist the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department in locating a homicide suspect from their city, according to a media release.Just before 10a.m, the suspect, Justin J. Arbee, 25, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.Arbee is accused of being involved in a Feb. 10, killing of 64-year-old Zulfiqar Ladhani, who was shot outside his store, Joe’s Liquor &amp; Convenience Store near the 8000 block of Hickman Mills Drive.Anyone with information on this case is urged to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit.&nbsp; Over the weekend, a trooper conducted a traffic stop on a teen driver traveling 110 mph. KHP Trooper Tod Heilman wrote, "When you’re 17 and trying to make it home before curfew and you’re running late, call your parents and explain, they would rather you make it home safe!&nbsp; The Patrol did not indicate where the traffic stop occurred.

The Kansas Highway Patrol stopped another driver on K-96 who was accused of traveling 109 mph - "44 mph over the speed limit." "Remember, no matter where you're headed, it's more important to get there safely than on time. Speeding doesn't just endanger you; it endangers everyone else on the road as well. Late for curfew: Teen caught traveling 110 mph on Kan. highway

DAMASCUS —U.S. forces continue to battle terrorist cells in Syria.

On Friday,&nbsp;Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), enabled by U.S. forces, conducted a raid and captured Salah Mohammad Al-Abdullah, an ISIS cell leader in the vicinity of Shahil, Syria, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command.



During the operation, the Syrian Democratic Forces recovered multiple weapons to include a 12.7mm (.50 cal) Sniper rifle, an AK-47, hand grenades, and various weapons and ammunition.



The SDF-led operation is part of the ongoing Defeat-ISIS campaign to degrade ISIS networks and prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group in the region. CENTCOM forces enabled SDF during the operation by providing technical support and intelligence.

U.S. forces help capture ISIS cell leader in Syria

KANSAS CITY —Prosecutors&nbsp;secured a guilty plea in a fatal shooting that took place in Independence in 2022, according to&nbsp;Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson.

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2527/2216-CR04647-01-Guilty-Plea-Judgment_Redacted_FINAL">Jordan Huff, 23, pled guilty</a>&nbsp;to 2nd Degree Murder. A 15-year sentence was agreed on after mediation involving input from the victim’s family.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.jacksoncountyprosecutor.com/DocumentCenter/View/2526/JHuff_Redacted">According to court records</a>, Independence police were dispatched to a residence regarding a shooting and found the victim deceased in the living room, with multiple apparent gunshot wounds.&nbsp;

Detectives determined that the defendant and his family including three children were at the residence eating and playing games.&nbsp;A witness told police that Huff and the victim were playing cards with others. Huff entered the kitchen and then shot and killed the victim. 

Huff pointed the firearm at other witnesses in the residence and demanded a cell phone and car keys. Ring doorbell camera footage showed Huff entering and exiting the apartment with a firearm. The Huff is heard on the footage demanding a witness’s keys and phone.&nbsp;

A witness said the defendant had a history of domestic violence.

Kansas City man admits to deadly card game killing

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on drug allegations.

Just before 12:30 a.m. March 6, a Sheriff's Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Mercedes SUV near 150th and Q. Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A Jackson County Sheriff’s K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics within the vehicle. A search of the vehicle ended with the driver, Shantel Rene Simmons, 39, of Valley Falls, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff: Kansas woman was transporting meth

WASHINGTON — A report released Thursday by Democrats details how many people in each state would lose access to Medicaid if Republicans in Congress were to cut the program by one-third — a scenario some GOP lawmakers have floated as an option to help pay for tax cuts, though one so sweeping it would struggle to get the votes needed to become law.

The Joint Economic Committee – Minority report, shared first with States Newsroom, projects that 25 million people throughout the country would lose access to Medicaid if Republicans were to enact a law cutting funding to the health care program for lower income Americans by one-third.

Among them, 3 million would be rural residents and 10 million would be children. Additionally, 1 in 5 seniors could lose Medicaid coverage of their nursing home care, according to the report.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25553748-jec-medicaid-cuts/" target="_blank">state-by-state breakdown in the JEC report</a>&nbsp;shows that California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Texas would have the highest numbers of residents harmed by the potential cuts. Each of those states could have more than 1 million residents potentially kicked off the program.

The Joint Economic Committee includes members of both chambers of Congress and both political parties. It’s designed “to review economic conditions and to recommend improvements in economic policy,” according to its website.

New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan, ranking member on the Joint Economic Committee, said in a statement that House Republicans’ plans “could take health care away from up to 25 million Americans.”

“This new Joint Economic Committee analysis sheds light on the number of people who could lose health care coverage because of President Trump and Congressional Republicans — and the devastating impacts that their budget could have specifically on the ability of children, seniors, and people living in rural areas across the country to access health care,” Hassan said.

Republicans in Congress are trying to figure out how to pass several of their core policy goals, including extending the 2017 tax law, through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/youre-hearing-lot-about-budget-reconciliation-congress-what-does-mean" target="_blank">the budget reconciliation process.</a>

The House&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-house-republicans-overcome-own-members-doubts-push-through-sweeping-budget" target="_blank">approved a budget resolution</a>&nbsp;in late February that would clear the way for lawmakers to increase the deficit by as much as $4.5 trillion to accomplish their tax goals. But that budget resolution also proposes several committees find savings, including the Energy and Commerce Committee.

That panel, tasked with finding at least $880 billion in spending cuts, oversees several federal programs, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Republicans and President Donald Trump have been clear they will not be touching the Medicare program, which provides health insurance for retired Americans and some people with disabilities.

But GOP lawmakers are debating how exactly to find savings in the Medicaid program, though they could face intense blowback given&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/gop-tax-cut-plans-may-depend-savings-medicaid-what-it-and-who-relies-it" target="_blank">how many of their own voters rely on the program</a>&nbsp;for health care. Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that helps cover medical costs for some people with limited incomes.

Republicans in Congress cannot actually advance a reconciliation bill until after the House and Senate agree to adopt the same budget resolution, which has yet to happen.

The Senate&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/us-senate-adopts-plan-b-budget-gop-seeks-billions-border-security" target="_blank">voted in mid-February to approve its own budget resolution&nbsp;</a>that proposes a two-bill strategy for enacting Republican campaign promises.

Under the Senate budget resolution, which House leaders have vowed not to take up, Congress would first pass a bill to boost defense and border security spending by hundreds of billions of dollars as well as remaking the country’s energy policy.

The Senate strategy would then have Congress adopt a second budget resolution later this year, setting up a pathway for Republicans to extend the 2017 tax law.

The Senate is expected to take up the House’s budget resolution at some point and make changes to the document, though when exactly they’ll do that is an open-ended question. The budget resolution would then have to go back to the House for final approval.

The Joint Economic Committee – Minority report made public Thursday came out just one day after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2025-03/61235-Boyle-Pallone.pdf" target="_blank">released a letter&nbsp;</a>detailing how much federal funding the House Energy and Commerce Committee oversees.

CBO Director Phillip L. Swagel wrote that the letter was in response to a request from House Budget Committee ranking member Brendan F. Boyle, D-Pa., and Energy and Commerce Committee ranking member Frank Pallone, D-N.J.

The Energy and Commerce Committee, Swagel wrote, oversees $8.8 trillion in spending over the 10-year budget window when Medicare spending is excluded, which is what Boyle and Pallone requested.

Of that total, $8.2 trillion, or 93%, goes toward Medicaid, Swagel wrote.

The Energy and Commerce Committee, which House Republicans expect to find at least $880 billion in spending cuts, oversees just $381 billion over the 10‑year budget window that doesn’t go toward Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.&nbsp;

Those CBO numbers would indicate that if Republicans stick to the goals in the House budget resolution, which very well could change in the Senate, they would likely have to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a homicide in Topeka have identified the victim as 22-year-old&nbsp;Yancy Whitehead of Topeka, according to&nbsp;Police LT Donna Eubanks.&nbsp;

Police are also asking for help to locate a person of interest in the homicide. If you know the whereabouts of Robert Reyes, 49, of Topeka, or have any information about the incident, please call 911 or report anonymously to Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.

First responders located Whitehead with life-threatening injuries. He was&nbsp; pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel.Topeka Police were later notified of two other individuals that had arrived at an area hospital. One individual had life-threatening injuries and one a non-life-threatening injury.This is the city’s 3rd homicide investigation of 2025.&nbsp;
