BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after an investigation in Barton County.

Just before 6p.m. Monday, police responded to United Parcel Services, 2316 9th Street in Great Bend in reference to a suspicious package, according to a media release.

Officers were notified that a package had been intercepted by staff and flagged as suspicious. Inside of the suspicious package, officers discovered 7.6 grams of crystal methamphetamine hidden within the contents of the package. The investigating officers were able to identify the suspect attempting to mail the package.

On March 11, police responded to a residence located at 2087 NW 60th Street, in Stafford County in reference to the execution of a narcotics search warrant. Officers apprehended the suspect from the UPS incident identified as 57-year-old Chandler Wieland. Officers and 56-year-old Lisa Rugan at the residence. During a search of the residence, officers located over 100 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, other controlled substances, evidence of drug distribution, as well as illegal and stolen firearms.

Wieland was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on requested charges that include two counts of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal use of weapons, possession of a stolen firearm and no drug tax stamp.

Rugan was also arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail and booked on requested charges of one count of distribution of methamphetamine, felony interference with law enforcement, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal use of a weapon and no drug tax stamp

Kansas suspect attempted to send meth through UPS

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Stevens County Health Department have reported a positive case of measles in a resident of Stevens County, according to a media release from the KDHE.

 It is currently unknown whether this case is linked to any ongoing measles outbreaks in the United States. KDHE, along with the Stevens County Health Department, are notifying individuals who may have been exposed to this case of measles. This incident marks the first measles case in Kansas since 2018.

Early symptoms of measles are a fever of more than 101 degrees Fahrenheit, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes. Usually, one to four days after these early symptoms, a red rash appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.&nbsp;Measles symptoms typically develop 10-14 days after exposure. Symptoms can develop as soon as seven days and as long as 21 days after exposure.

Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. Measles is spread through the air by breathing, coughing or sneezing. Measles can be spread from an infected person to others from four days before, to four days after the rash appears.

Because measles is a highly infectious disease, it is very important for anyone exposed and experiencing symptoms to isolate from others with the exception of visiting a health care provider.

The best way to prevent measles is to get the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends children get their first dose at 12 to 15 months of age, and a second dose at age 4 to 6 years. Infants ages 6 through 11 months old should get the MMR vaccination if traveling outside the United States. Adults are protected from measles if they have had at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, were born before 1957, or have evidence of immunity from a blood test.

If an individual has known exposure to someone with measles and they are not immune through vaccination or prior infection, they are recommended to:

Per&nbsp;K.A.R. 28-1-2, measles is a four-hour reportable disease. If a health care provider, laboratory or hospital suspects, tests, or diagnoses an individual with measles, KDHE should be notified immediately. KDHE will work with the health care provider on testing recommendations. Teachers and school administrators are also required by law to report suspected cases to KDHE. &nbsp;

Measles cases rarely occur in Kansas and are usually associated with international travel.

Just after 8:30p.m. Wednesday, Excelsior Springs police received a 911 call requesting a welfare check for a home in the 200 Block of Woods Avenue, according to media release.&nbsp; A family member of the residents requested the check.

First responders found the residence was secure and a family ember then asked officers to force entry into the home to check on the residents. Police found two adult men deceased.

Police did not release a possible cause of death but indicated the victims died of unnatural causes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police: 2 found dead in Kansas City area home

Missouri’s Department of Social Services announced Thursday that it is appointing Sara Smith as the next director of Children’s Division, effective immediately.&nbsp;

Smith will be the agency’s&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/director-of-missouri-child-welfare-agency-stepping-down-next-month/">seventh</a>&nbsp;director since 2018.&nbsp;

Children’s Division administers child welfare services, including by investigating claims of child abuse and neglect and running the state’s foster care system.&nbsp;

Smith, previously the director of children’s residential programs and compliance within Children’s Division, has worked at the Department of Social Services for 19 years, according to a press release. Prior to working with the state, she worked at an organization focused on helping children experiencing abuse.&nbsp;

“Sara’s experience and dedication to supporting children and families make her an ideal leader for this vitally important role,” Gov. Mike Kehoe said in the press release. “Under Sara’s guidance, the Children’s Division will be able to make the necessary strides to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children in our state.”

The agency has been without a permanent Children’s Division director since&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/director-of-missouri-child-welfare-agency-stepping-down-next-month/">Darrell Missey</a>&nbsp;stepped down Nov. 1 after three years. Missey’s tenure was the longest of the six directors the division saw during former Gov. Mike Parson’s six years in office.&nbsp;

The Department of Social Services’ director, Jess Bax, was&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/03/07/missouri-senate-approves-massive-child-welfare-bill-aimed-at-foster-care-system/">confirmed by the Missouri Senate last week</a>.&nbsp;

Bax praised Smith’s “deep commitment to child welfare, extensive experience, and strong leadership background” in the press release.

She added: “I want to applaud Governor Kehoe’s support throughout this transition and look forward to working with her to drive positive change and strengthen our efforts to support children and families.”

Smith said her new team will “focus on safety and streamlining processes to better serve kids and families.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Children’s Division has been under intense&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/02/28/missouri-senate-delays-vote-on-new-social-services-director-over-foster-care-concerns/">scrutiny from lawmakers and advocates</a>. They have pointed to issues ranging from a lack of appropriate placements for foster children, resulting in kids staying in hospitals and offices, to the division doing a poor job placing foster kids with family and failing to spend designated funding to keep kids safely at home.

Missouri social services agency appoints new child welfare director

The bill builds upon funding allocated in 2023, which only supports 11% of requested project costs from more than 200 cities

TOPEKA — A House bill would allocate an additional $20 million annually to the Kansas Water Plan fund to support projects for cities across the state.

<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/hb2113/" target="_blank">House Bill 2113</a>&nbsp;builds upon&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kwo.ks.gov/news-events/hb-2302-grant-programs#:~:text=for%20HB%202302%2C%20increased%20the,issues%20identified%20in%20the%20KWP." target="_blank">new funding from the 2023 session</a>&nbsp;with House Bill 2302. It would increase the current annual allocation of $35 million to $55 million for the Kansas Water Plan, and from that amount an additional $2 million to the Technical Assistance Grant Fund and $6 million to the Water Projects Grants Fund. The money would come from the State General Fund.

The House passed the bill 106-15 on Feb. 20. The Senate Agriculture and National Resources Committee heard the bill Monday.

“House Bill 2302 made a huge difference. This bill basically builds off of house bill 2302,” said Wendi Stark, a legislative liaison with the League of Kansas Municipalities, during Monday’s hearing. “It’s helping to address our immediate needs.”

In the past two years, Kansas communities have&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/21/kansas-towns-request-600m-in-first-two-years-of-water-project-grants/">requested more than $600 million for water needs</a>&nbsp;with almost 600 applications. Stark said that of the 219 municipalities who applied in 2024 or 2025, 45.7% were from towns with a population of fewer than 500 people. Current funding allowed for just 11% of requested funding to be approved.

The Ogallala Aquifer, the water source much of western Kansas relies on, is drying fast.&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/21/kansas-towns-request-600m-in-first-two-years-of-water-project-grants/">The Kansas Geological Survey found</a>&nbsp;that parts of western Kansas have 25 years of water left. Sen. Ron Ryckman Sr., a Republican from Meade, said his southwest Kansas district is “always hurtin’ for water.”

Rep. Jim Minnix, a Republican from Scott City, introduced the bill and testified at the Senate hearing. He said he gets questions about where the money is going, since the state can’t “make” any water.

“It’s a finite resource. What we’re trying to do is save it for future generations,” Minnix said.

When Gov. Laura Kelly took office in 2019, the state had not funded the water plan for a decade. Both Republicans and Democrats have expressed concerns over the state’s water supply issues —&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/01/16/kansas-governor-proposes-another-30m-to-address-dwindling-water-supply/">Kelly’s proposed budget includes another $30 million per year for the water plan</a>, while the Republican-crafted House budget would give&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/02/19/kansas-house-forwards-republican-crafted-state-government-budget-bill-to-senate-colleagues/">$11.7 million to water projects</a>.

Dozens of individuals testified in support of the legislation in both the Senate and House, with no opposition or neutral testimony.

At the House Water Committee hearing on Feb. 11, the public works director for the city of Edgerton, Dan Merkh, said the city had applied and been rejected for both the technical assistance and water project grants.

“Cities across Kansas face many unfunded state and federal mandates,” Merkh wrote in testimony for the House hearing. “The Technical Assistance (Grants) Fund and Water Project (Grants Fund) help cities like Edgerton address a variety of needs, from emergency connections to water-quality related problems to mitigating the risk of a sanitary sewer overflow.”

Hardy Howard, the city administrator for WaKeeney, said “it seems deeply obvious” that the water infrastructure around the state needs to be replaced. He said the city needs to replace an aging pipeline, which is the city’s only way to get water distributed from the wells. Howard said there have been multiple breaks.

“HB 2113 supports a small increase in funding to assist communities with these critical needs,” Howard said.

Kansas House bill would add $20M for State Water Plan projects

Wide-ranging legislation that would lower tax rates for individuals and businesses passed the Missouri House on Wednesday.

The 100 to 53 vote saw three Republicans joining with the Democrats in opposition. It now heads to the Senate for consideration.&nbsp;

A key provision&nbsp;<a href="https://house.mo.gov/Bill.aspx?bill=HB798&amp;year=2025&amp;code=R" target="_blank">in the bill</a>&nbsp;is a gradual reduction in the state income tax from 4.7% to 3.7% over the next 10 years. The yearly percentage point rate reduction would only go into effect if state revenues grow by at least $175 million per year.&nbsp;

When fully phased in, the bill’s fiscal note estimates a $1.3 billion reduction in state revenue.

“That number would indicate we meet every single trigger, every single year,” said House Speaker Pro Tem Chad Perkins, a Bowling Green Republican handling the legislation. “If things are going that incredibly well, we’re all going to do great. Let’s all hope that happens. That would mean Missouri’s economy is doing great.”

The corporate tax would also be reduced from 4% to 3.75% and the capital gains tax would be eliminated.

State Rep. David Tyson Smith, a Columbia Democrat, complained that the inclusion of the corporate and capital gains tax cuts focuses too much of the legislation on the wealthy — and does so while potentially putting the state’s budget at risk.&nbsp;

“Everyone appreciates a tax cut,” he said.&nbsp; “But why do we have to slide in tax cuts for the rich?”&nbsp;

Gov. Mike Kehoe entered office in January pledging to fulfill his campaign promise to eliminate the state’s income tax. Republican legislative leaders have echoed his call, pushing a handful of tax cut proposals in both the House and Senate.&nbsp;

One of those proposals — a $300 million capital gains tax cut — cleared the House earlier this year and needs only to be approved by the Senate before heading to Kehoe’s desk.

&nbsp;But on Tuesday, it ran into bipartisan opposition that stalled its momentum.&nbsp;

“It’s just very skewed to the most wealthy people,” state Sen. Mike Cierpiot, a Lee’s Summit Republican, said of the capital gains bill. “The 8,000 wealthiest families (in Missouri) will get more than half of the benefit.”

Federal money that bolstered the state budget for years is drying up, Cierpiot noted, and lawmakers must be mindful when considering anything that could reduce state revenue and impact services.&nbsp;

“Missouri is not like a lot of states,” he said. “If we cut taxes… we have to go back to the ballot to reinstate, so we have to be very careful.”

The top marginal rate for Missouri’s income tax has gradually declined from 6% in 2015 to 4.7% this year under legislation passed in 2014.

Two future tax cuts, to a 4.5% rate, are already in state law and will take effect if general revenue growth hits targets.

Income tax remains the single largest portion of state general revenue, with the individual income tax contributing 65% and the corporate income tax about 7% of the $13.4 billion received in fiscal 2024.

Missouri House approves $1.3 billion tax cut plan

GASCONADE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Gasconade County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Ford passenger vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Berger, Mo. boy was northbound on MO 19 just south of Aufderheide Road.

The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and the driver overcorrected. This caused the vehicle to travel into the path of a southbound semi driven by a 62-year-old Sunrise Beach man. After impact both vehicle traveled off the road and caught fire.&nbsp; The teen driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Owensville ambulance transported the semi driver to Capital Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City. The MSHP had incomplete seat belt usage information. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

A 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Raymond L&nbsp;Streeter, 84, Fort Scott, rear ended the Ford. After impact, the Ford&nbsp;rotated counter-clockwise,&nbsp; overturned and Welch was ejected into the westbound lanes of U.S. 54.

&nbsp;A westbound 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; James J.&nbsp;Bridger, 22, Gainsville, Texas, struck Welch.&nbsp; He was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Countryside Funeral Home. There were no other injuries.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement and fire officials investigating the a fatal Kansas house fire have identified the victim as 54-year-old James Earl Hoddy, according to Fire Chief Alan Stahl.

Just after 4a.m. Tuesday, the Topeka Fire Department received reports of a house fire at 2418 SE Wisconsin Avenue, according to Stahl.

 First arriving units reported a two-story residence fully involved with fire. During a search of the residence, firefighters located Hoddy deceased. The fire was quickly brought under control.

The Topeka Fire Department Investigations unit along with members of the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Investigations unit responded to the scene.&nbsp; They determined the fire was intentionally set.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire crews also located and rescued a dog&nbsp; from inside of the residence. Two other dogs died.&nbsp;The Topeka Fire Department is seeking no suspects for this fire, according to Stahl.

Fire marshal IDs Kan. man who died in house fire he set

PAWNEE COUNTY —A Kansas felon will spend the rest of his life in prison for sex crimes involving juveniles.

On Wednesday, James Edwin Speer, 33 formerly of Larned appeared in custody before Pawnee County District Judge Bruce Gatterman for felony sentencing, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

In July, a jury found Speer was found Speer guilty of Rape of a Child Under 14 years of age and of Aggravated Oral Sodomy of a Child Under 14 years of age.

The crimes were alleged to have occurred at a residence in Garfield, Kansas on or about May 25th or 26th in 2013. 

Testimony was presented at trial that during a conversation with her mother in August of 2020 the victim disclosed that, when she was approximately 8 years old, she had been sexually assaulted at party her father took her to. The Pawnee County Sheriff’s Department was then notified about the allegations by the mother. A formal forensic interview of the girl was performed by the Child Advocacy Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

At trial, the defendant presented an Alibi defense arguing it was impossible for him to have committed the alleged acts as he was with another girl at the time. As part of the evidence at trial, the parties stipulated that in 2015 a jury convicted Speer, of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a 14 year old child. Specifically, the jury found Speer had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in May or June of 2013; and he had sexual intercourse with a 14 year old child in an apartment in Larned in June of 2013.

Based on the age of the victim, under Jessica’s Law the presumptive sentence was a life sentence with a mandatory requirement the defendant serve a minimum of 25 years. As part of his opportunity to address the Court at sentencing, Speer denied he had committed the newly convicted offenses and requested the Court consider the efforts he has made in prison to reform himself and sentence him to a reduced sentence such that he could be released in 2027.

Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett argued that based on Speer’s other prior sexually violent crimes the Court should find that Speer is an Aggravated Habitual Sex Offender and sentence the defendant to life without the possibility of parole.

After reviewing the presentence investigation report and hearing the arguments presented, Judge Gatterman agreed with the State that Speer met the statutory criteria of an Aggravated Habitual Sex Offender having been convicted of at least two prior sexually violent crimes. As such, the Court sentenced the defendant to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The defendant will also be subject to lifetime offender registration as a sex offender.

Under Kansas sentencing laws, all prior convictions which occur prior to sentencing in the current case are considered in determining criminal history, regardless of whether the offense that led to the prior conviction occurred before or after the current offense or the conviction in the current case.

Speer is currently in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections serving a sentence for his 2015 Pawnee County sex offense convictions. Following the sentencing, the defendant was advised of his rights to appeal the convictions and sentence imposed.

The Court previously denied the defense motion for a new trial at a hearing conducted on August 22, 2024.

Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett presented the State’s case. Speer was represented by Joe Shepack of Great Bend, Kansas.

Judge rules Kan. man is aggravated habitual sex offender

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two women on drug allegations.

Just after 11a.m. March 9, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested two individuals after a Jackson County Sheriff’s K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics within an Acura passenger vehicle near Mayetta, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found methamphetamine, psilocybin mushrooms, and drug paraphernalia.

The driver and registered owner,&nbsp;Paula Louise Michael, 61, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The front seat passenger, Jessica Maria Espinoza, 62, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kansas deputy found magic mushrooms, meth during traffic stop

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement investigating a fatal hit and run pedestrian incident that occurred just after 3p.m. Monday in Kansas City have identified the victim as 35-year-old Megan L. Aldridge.

She was walking on the outside shoulder of eastbound Interstate 70 near the exit ramp to Paseo, According to Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

An unknown vehicle struck Aldridge and then&nbsp; left the area without stopping. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 This is fatality #11 in KCMO compared to #21 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez. Police have not released the name of the&nbsp; victim or additional details.

TOPEKA —Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued a statement Wednesday about a “Black Mass” event scheduled for March 28, at the Kansas Statehouse.

The Satanic Grotto announced on social media they organized an event for inside the Capitol building that day.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday said it’s cutting a substantial number of the agency’s staff through a “<a href="https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/workforce-restructuring/reductions-in-force-rif/" target="_blank">reduction in force</a>” process, bringing the department’s workforce to roughly half the number in place when President Donald Trump took office.

According to senior department officials speaking on background to reporters Tuesday evening, roughly 1,315 employees are subject to the initiative. The sweeping cuts are part of a government-wide effort by Trump and billionaire White House adviser Elon Musk to reduce the federal workforce in an effort to slash government spending and reduce what they see as waste.

When Trump took office, the department had 4,133 employees. Following Tuesday’s announcement, the agency said it will have roughly 2,183 workers remaining. In the past several weeks, nearly 600 workers took voluntary resignation opportunities or retirement, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-initiates-reduction-force" target="_blank">Tuesday evening press release</a>.

The department also terminated 63 probationary employees in February, according to senior department officials.

The senior officials clarified that this staffing reduction will not impact the department’s ability to deliver on civil rights investigations, the rollout of the federal student aid application, Title I funding for low-income school districts and other statutorily mandated functions Congress has given the agency.

The senior officials confirmed earlier reporting that the department’s Washington-area office buildings would close Tuesday evening for safety reasons and would reopen Thursday.

“Today’s reduction in force reflects the Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers,” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement Tuesday.

“I appreciate the work of the dedicated public servants and their contributions to the Department. This is a significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system.”

Congressional Democrats and labor union leaders blasted the cuts Tuesday.

“Today’s staff eliminations are illegal, and they are a slap in the face to the dedicated public servants who work to make sure American children have access to a quality education,” Connecticut U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said. “No president or member of the executive branch has the authority to end public education, violate the law, and unilaterally steal dollars promised to students.”

Sen. Patty Murray, a Washington state Democrat who is the vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the cuts were meant to sidestep the legislative difficulty of eliminating the department itself.

“Donald Trump and Linda McMahon know they can’t abolish the Department of Education on their own but they understand that if you gut it to its very core and fire all the people who run programs that help students, families, and teachers, you might end up with a similar, ruinous result,” she said.

“Ultimately, what they want to do is clear: fire the people who help our kids and gut funding for our students, teachers, and schools. This is about breaking government for working families — and enriching billionaires like themselves in the process.”

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said “denuding an agency so it cannot function effectively is the most cowardly way of dismantling it.”&nbsp;

“The massive reduction in force at the Education Department is an attack on opportunity that will gut the agency and its ability to support students, throwing federal education programs into chaos across the country,” said Weingarten, who leads one of the largest teachers unions in the country.

Trump has targeted the Education Department specifically in the spending cuts initiative, repeatedly pledging to shutter the 45-year-old agency in his quest to move education “back to the states.”

The department had already seen dramatic shifts in the weeks since Trump took office — from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/elon-musks-doge-targets-us-department-education-millions-funding-cuts" target="_blank">major contract cuts</a>, to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/28/education-department-quit-00206765" target="_blank">staff buyouts</a>.

Other departments and agencies,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/vets-worry-trump-cuts-va-workforce-will-interrupt-benefits&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1741740543665052&amp;usg=AOvVaw2OZuQ95exTw4F_s_yKUi7E" target="_blank">including the Department of Veterans Affairs</a>, have also seen broad staffing decreases under Trump.

Last week, McMahon&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/new-secretary-linda-mcmahon-unveils-final-mission-us-department-education" target="_blank">sent an email to department employees</a>&nbsp;regarding the agency’s “final mission,” where she detailed her plans to “overhaul” the federal agency.

The former World Wrestling Entertainment executive told employees that the department’s “role in this new era of accountability is to restore the rightful role of state oversight in education and to end the overreach from Washington.”

McMahon said “this restoration will profoundly impact staff, budgets, and agency operations here at the Department.”

Even if Trump were to sign an executive order on dismantling the department, only Congress has the authority to shut it down. Any bill to close down the agency would face extreme difficulties getting through the narrowly GOP-controlled Senate, with at least 60 senators needed to advance past the filibuster.

In her statement, DeLauro dared Republican lawmakers to try to eliminate the department through legislation.

“To my Republican colleagues: if you want to eliminate the Department of Education, then put your name on a bill to do that,” she said. “Let your constituents see it. Let us debate it. Let us and the American people deliberate. Do not yield our authority, and the rule of law, to unchecked billionaires.”

Trump’s push to move education “back to the states” also comes as much of the funding and oversight of schools already occurs at the state and local levels. Legally, the department cannot control the curriculum of schools across the country.

U.S. Education Department to Cut Hundreds of Staff Members

JOHNSON COUNTY —Police and state revenue agents raided multiple convenience store during an investigation earlier this month.

On March 7, the Olathe Police Department, with the assistance of the Kansas Department of Revenue, conducted warrant services at four separate gas stations/vape shops within the City of Olathe, according to Olathe Police&nbsp;Sergeant John Moncayo reported on Tuesday.

The warrant services were due to alleged sales of illegal THC products. As a result, multiple alleged THC products were seized from all four locations. The items seized will be sent to the Johnson County Crime Lab for testing.&nbsp; Criminal charges are pending the results of the testing.

This case remains under investigation by the Olathe Police Department. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Olathe Police Department at (913) 971-6363 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.&nbsp;

The incident occurred in&nbsp; the parking lot of Walmart located at 2600 NW Rochester Road, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols.. 

A vehicle struck Thomas in the store parking lot. Medical personnel pronounced her deceased on scene.&nbsp; The incident remains under investigation.

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a high speed chase in Morris County.

Just before midnight March 8, a sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop on U.S. 77 at mile post 137 for an alleged traffic violation, according to a media release from the Morris County Sheriff.

The driver, later identified as a juvenile, refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Geary County Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers responded to assist. The vehicle avoided spike strips and attempted to exit off Interstate 70 through an east ditch, stuck a tree row and came to rest in an open field. Deputies found illegal drugs in the vehicle. The driver and a 27-year-old passenger identified as Jaquellin Demarquez Holland, 27, Wichita, were not injured.

Deputies arrested them. The teen driver is being held on requested charges that include flee or attempted to elude law enforcement, no proof of insurance and a number of other traffic violations.

Holland, who has a previous counterfeiting conviction, is being held on requested charges that include interference with law enforcement, possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or other stimulant and use/possess with intent to use-drug paraphernalia into human body.

Charlotte O’Hara, announced Tuesday she will seek the&nbsp;Republican nomination&nbsp;for&nbsp;governor&nbsp;in 2026, according to a media release.

O’Hara, a business woman and conservative Republican, stated in the release, she "is done with Kansas being the high tax point on the prairie. As Governor, she will focus on reining in state spending and ludicrous corporate welfare, ban DEI and get schools back to education.

&nbsp;Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly's second term is nearing an end. Kelly is term-limited from running again in 2026. In January,&nbsp;Kansas Secretary of State <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/ec164f8e-f8d7-4438-9c64-8f8ebaa1c7ea">Scott Schwab of Overland Park announced </a>his intention&nbsp;to run for governor.

O’Hara has long fought corporate welfare/tax incentives, which increase property taxes for homeowners and small businesses, according to the media release from her campaign. 

O’Hara is a past Republican Party 3rd District Chairwoman and served in the Kansas House (2011-2012). She voted against Governor Brownback’s 7.5% increase in the 2012 General Fund budget and blew the whistle on Brownback’s acceptance of the federal Early Innovator Grant money to build the IT infrastructure for ObamaCare in Kansas.

O’Hara (2021-2025) served as Johnson County Commissioner, District 3, "where she refused to capitulate to COVID masks and vaccine mandates." She tirelessly fought against Democrat controlled Johnson County Commission’s spending frenzy.O’Hara emphasized, “The hidden increase of taxes through inflation has become extraordinarily draconian, especially property taxes.
