The Missouri Western women's basketball team jumped on Northwest Missouri State from the get-go, leading 20-10 after one quarter.

The Griffons (11-4, 6-3 MIAA) never trailed, leading by as many as 16 points, and rolling to a 61-47 win over the Bearcats on Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Missouri Western held Northwest's offense in check all game, as the Bearcats were only 16-of-58 from the field, including 4-of-20 from three.

The Griffons, winners in six of their last seven games, shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) Saturday, and forced 23 turnovers on the defensive end.

Missouri Western scored 29 points off of those giveaways.

Tiani Ellison led the Griffons with a career-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Connie Clarke had her second double-double of the season, logging 16 points and 10 rebounds. Clarke also had three steals, three blocks and two assists.

Jayme Jackson finished with 13 points, three boards, three assists and two steals.

Caely Kesten did the heavy lifting for Northwest, scoring 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

Missouri Western has now won the last four meetings against Northwest and eight of the last 11 against the Bearcats.

MWSU men, at long last, get one against Northwest Missouri State

Not much more needs to be said than that. Missouri Western (12-3, 6-3 MIAA), after losing their last 24 matchups against Northwest Missouri State, finally got one on the Bearcats, beating the No. 14 team in the country, 76-70, at the MWSU Fieldhouse Saturday.

Missouri Western, now on a four-game winning streak, jumped out a 16-5 start in the first 6.5 minutes and they never trailed in the game.

The Griffons led by seven points at halftime and led 60-46 with 6:17 to go.

Northwest (11-4, 7-2 MIAA) didn't go quietly, as the Bearcats got to within 68-64 with 1:21 to play.

Missouri Western was solid at the free throw line throughout, however, making 27-of-33 at the stripe, including 15-of-17 in the second half.

Northwest, the No. 1 free throw shooting team in the MIAA, missed 11 at the foul line, going 26-of-37.

JaRon Thames led four Griffons in double figures with 16 points, including a 10-of-11 effort at the foul line. Thames also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

Julius Dixon dropped 14 points. Taye Fields added 12 points, while Zion Swader finished with 10.

Swader and Fields, who both finished with four fouls, were somewhat limited in minutes early, as they both picked up two first half fouls.

Kiani Saxon is also to be credited, as he scored nine points to go with four blocks, two steals and two assists.

Missouri Western shot a solid 46.8 percent (22-of-47) on the day.

Wes Dreamer led Northwest with 24 points and eight boards. Bennett Stirtz had 13, Jack Ratigan scored 12 off the bench, while Isaiah Jackson added 12 points to go with five boards and five assists.

It's Missouri Western's first win over Northwest in men's basketball since Jan. 12, 2013 - 4,018 days ago. The teams will meet again in Maryville on February 24.

Both Griffon teams stay home this Thursday to host Newman. The women's game is at 5:30, the men's at 7:30. Both are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3, 680kfeq.com, KFEQ app).

MWSU WBB dominate Bearcats, Griffon men break long streak against Northwest

Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western are set to do battle on the basketball court again this Saturday in a couple of high stakes MIAA contests.

All four teams, men's and women's, have double digit wins and palpable momentum early in 2024.

On the women’s side, Northwest sits at 12-2 overall - their best start since 2010-11. Their 6-2 conference record has the Bearcats tied for first in the MIAA standings.

Northwest has won four straight, coming off last Saturday's 63-42 win at Rogers State. Northwest head coach Austin Meyer says his team has found a way to win led by a core of experienced players.

"Just experience and the kids playing together for multiple years," Meyer told KFEQ Radio. "We try to get a little bit better each day and I feel like our kids buy into that. We're in a good spot right now, but they don't give you midyear awards. So, we've got a long road ahead."

One of Northwest’s returners this season is St. Joseph native and sophomore Ella Moody. Moody started 12 games as a freshman last season, and has scored 37 points to go with 18 rebounds for the Bearcats this season in 11 appearances.

A St. Joseph Central graduate, Moody cherishes the opportunity to play in her home city once again.

"I like playing at home," Moody said, "because everyone gets to come. All of my friends and family get to come and watch. Missouri Western is a really great team and it'll be a really competitive game. It'll be close, which is a great game to watch. I'm excited to have everyone there and have the support."

The Bearcat women have found themselves in a lot of close games in recent years. Last season, Northwest went 15-15 - eight of those losses were by 10 points or fewer.

Seven of Northwest's 12 victories so far this season have come in games decided by 10 points or less.

"We've had a lot of close games we've been on the losing end of," Meyer said, "and we've been able to win a lot of close games this year."

One of the biggest keys in this turnaround for Northwest is continuity. The Bearcats had 13 freshmen at the start of the 2021-22 season. Eleven true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen.

Of those 13 players in that class, 11 of them are still on the team. Six of them are fourth-year players. Three of them are in their fifth season.

Experience and a more up-tempo offense, Meyer says, have both been key. Helping to lead this offensive upswing is first-year assistant coach Chris Guess, who had spent the last 32 years as a decorated high school coach in Iowa.

"We're playing a little faster," he said. "We've played pretty slow in the past. It wasn't that we didn't say, 'Push the ball.' We had to limit possessions. We had to slow the game down. Whereas, we're playing at a faster rate. More possessions. I think our kids play more freely and play with more confidence, and I think that's been a big part of it."

The Missouri Western women's basketball team, meanwhile, is looking to get things back on track. The Griffon women are 10-4, coming off of a 74-58 loss at Northeastern State, which snapped a five-game winning streak.

 Missouri Western coach Candi Whitaker says it's up to her senior leaders to determine what kind of season they want to have as they enter the back half of the 2023-24 slate.

"It's their career, their season," Whitaker said. "We're going to stay consistent in our expectations and continue to coach effort and discipline every single day, which is where we're at."

At 5-3 in the MIAA, Missouri Western is only a game out of first place.

The Missouri Western women have won three straight against the Bearcats and seven of the last 10 overall.

Northwest, MWSU men match up with identical records Saturday

The Northwest Missouri State men are ranked No. 14 in the coaches' poll this week, sitting at 11-3 overall and on a six-game winning streak. Their 7-1 record in the MIAA is good for first place in the league.

They rank second in the league in scoring defense, allowing only 60.6 points per game. They also shoot at 50.1% clip from the field - good for second in the league as well.

Northwest head coach Ben McCollum says he's been impressed by Missouri Western - a team that's also 11-3 and winners of three straight.

The Griffons are second in the league, averaging 37.4 rebounds per game while putting up a strong 77.9 points per contest.

"I think Western is one of the better teams in the league," McCollum said. "They score at a high rate. Defensively, they're able to guard you and rebound. They do everything well. Just like any team in the MIAA, it's going to be one of those games. They'll be excited to play. We'll be excited to play. We try to always be."

Northwest has won each of the last 24 meetings against the MWSU men, including the last 10 in St. Joseph. Griffons’ head coach Will Martin admits the Griffons have to start pulling their weight in this rivalry.

"We have to do our part in the rivalry and start winning some of those matchups," Martin said. "But, I know our community will get out. I know Looney will be lit. We're going to need every ounce of their energy and support in that game."

Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western are travel partners. That means they share the same conference opponents every week in the regular season. So, the Bearcats and Griffons, by default, see each other a lot on film.

Martin says he and McCollum are, by now, very familiar with what the other team does and is capable of.

"We probably watch each other, me and Ben, more than any other team," Martin said. "You're watching a lot of their games to prep. We feel like we know them pretty well. They know us. They're a really good team. Well coached. What Ben McCollum has done there speaks for itself."

Tip-off in Saturday's men's game is set for 3:30 p.m. The women lead things off at 1:30.

MWSU, Northwest set for high stakes MIAA basketball Saturday in St. Joseph

Benton overcame an early 7-3 deficit, reeling off a 14-2 first half run and fending off Barstow in a 57-49 win in the Cardinal Classic semifinals at Benton High School Thursday.

The Cardinals (9-5) led 28-21 at halftime and led by 10 on a couple of different occasions in the second half.

The first quarter saw five lead changes, but Benton never trailed in the final three periods.

"That's a big win for us," Benton coach Jared Boone said. "Barstow is a very good team. They've beaten a lot of good teams, and we knew that's a team we could possibly see down the road in the future. The boys had good focus going into the game."

Senior Carson Schmidt led all scorers with 17 points. Sophomore Lincoln Goodwin had 15. Senior Zach Smith finished with nine.

Aidan Lawlor led three Barstow Knights in double figures with 14 points. Benton stopped what was a four-game winning streak for Barstow (8-4).

 Meanwhile, the Cardinals have now won four in a row and five of their last six games.

"We try not to look too far ahead," Boone said. "We take it day-by-day. This week has been tough with the weather and having to move things around. The boys hung in there. They handled adversity and they adjusted to the situation. I'm very proud of our effort tonight."

East Buchanan pulls off late run, fends off Central in thrilling game

In a rare, but local out-of-class matchup, East Buchanan hung with Class 6 St. Joseph Central all night Thursday and the Bulldogs, down 50-47 in the closing minutes, ended the game on an 11-2 run to knock off the Indians 58-52 at Benton High School Thursday.

The game was tight from the get-go and featured 11 ties and nine lead changes in all. East Buchanan (8-2) trailed 24-22 at halftime, but led 38-35 entering the fourth.

Clark Scott led the Bulldogs with 13 points. It was Scott who had a crucial 'and one' to put East Buchanan ahead 52-50 with just under three minutes remaining.

"We don't get the chance to play a Class 6 or a Class 5," East Buchanan coach Michael Carpenter said. "That's why we got in this tournament. To get to play a team like (Central) and come out on the other side with a W is pretty big for these guys."

Junior Dylan Davidson scored six of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Watkins also finished with 11 points. Senior Gage Busby had 10.

Central (6-10), who was without senior starter Brock Williamson, was led in scoring by senior Shadai Ndamboma, who finished with 17 points. Amonttay Henderson had 12. Kanon Wetlaufer added eight.

East Buchanan, whose only losses this year are to an unbeaten Maysville team (10-0) and a ranked Plattsburg (12-2) squad in overtime, picked up a signature win against a Class 6 foe on a neutral site.

Now, the Bulldogs will have a chance to win the Cardinal Classic, as they face the host school, Benton, for the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"(Benton) is a very, very good team," Carpenter noted. "They're deep. They do a lot of things well. They do a lot of little things really, really well. That's something we'll have to clean up to have a chance in that game. To come here and play them in their building and their tournament, that's a fun opportunity."

"It'll be a fun opportunity. Hopefully our kids embrace that we're there. Whatever happens, we go all out and let the cards fall where they may."

East Buchanan (8-2) trailed 24-22 at halftime, but led 38-35 entering the fourth.Clark Scott led the Bulldogs with 13 points. It was Scott who had a crucial 'and one' to put East Buchanan ahead 52-50 with just under three minutes remaining.The Bulldogs never trailed after that."We don't get the chance to play a Class 6 or a Class 5," East Buchanan coach Michael Carpenter said. "That's why we got in this tournament. To get to play a team like (Central) and come out on the other side with a W is pretty big for these guys."Junior Dylan Davidson scored six of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Benton, East Buchanan advance to Cardinal Classic title game with Thursday wins

A 35-second shot clock has been approved by KSHSAA’s Executive Board on an experimental basis for the 2024-25 basketball season.

Approval from the Executive Board happened during a meeting Wednesday night.

“All KSHSAA member schools will have the option to utilize the shot clock for all home boys and girls basketball games at the varsity level,” a press release from KSHSAA said.

The trial will only occur during the regular season, and any school choosing to participate in the trial must do so for every boys and girls varsity game.&nbsp;The trial period is only for varsity games.

Any school opting into the trial will be required to fill out a short survey after each game. The survey will record the game’s score, number of shot clock violations, number of officials' conferences to discuss shot clock issues, any noted problems and other information about how the shot clock impacted the game’s outcome.

The shot clock will not be used during the state tournament.

The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will make their first out-of-state trip of the conference slate as they head north to York Nebraska to take on the Panthers on KINA.

Women's Game: Kansas Wesleyan (6-8, 4-4), York (3-9, 2-6)

The Coyotes have won each of the last six and nine of the last 10 against York. They won 81-75 last January at York and 70-34 last February in Mabee Arena. KWU has a 16-3 record against York since 2005.

The Panthers have lost their last three games and seven of their last eight, the latest a 92-59 setback against Friends on Saturday in Wichita. They lost to Bethel 89-67 last Wednesday in North Newton. 

York averages 65.5 points and is shooting 39 percent overall, 27 percent from long range. Opponents average 77.6 points and are shooting 45 percent.

Junior guard Ashley Rubio averages a team-best 8.7 points followed by junior forward Britney Schroer at 8.6 points and sophomore post Destiny Shepherd 8.3.

Men's Game: Kansas Wesleyan (10-4, 7-1), York (6-8, 4-4)

The Coyotes have won the last six games against York. They won 80-78 last January in York, Nebraska then prevailed 104-86 in February in Mabee Arena. KWU trails 12-9 in the series since 2009.

The Panthers have won their last two games, both on the road. They defeated Bethel 82-79 last Wednesday in North Newton and toppled Friends 90-84 Saturday in Wichita. 

York had lost four of five before the two victories. They led Bethel 45-21 at halftime before the Threshers rallied in the second half.

Junior guard Jaden Henderson is the leading scorer at 12.9 points. He had 25 against Friends and 18 against Bethel. Junior forward Trevon Dennis averages 12.2 and senior guard Dwight Gover 10.0. 

York averages 76 points and allows 78. The Panthers are shooting 44 percent, 36.5 percent from the 3-point line.

Coyotes Travel to Nebraska to Tangle With York

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) —The Kansas City Chiefs survived a scare from the Chargers in the regular season finale as the AFC West champions got a last minute field goal from Harrison Butker, winning 13-12, now turning their eyes to the playoffs where they will the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Wildcard game.

Blaine Gabbert showed he's ready to step in for the Chiefs should something happen to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs.

Gabbert had a pair of first-down scrambles late in the fourth quarter Sunday that led to Harrison Butker's 41-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining.

“It was invaluable for myself and for a lot of the young guys that were playing,” said Gabbert, who completed 15 of 30 passes for 154 yards in his first start since 2018 with Tennessee. “We were playing against a starting defense and they were playing to win the game. Our defense played great all day. We had opportunity there to go in, and we executed when it mattered most.”

With the Chiefs (11-6) locked into the AFC’s No. 3 seed for the playoffs, Mahomes and Travis Kelce were inactive. Kelce finished with 984 receiving yards, ending the All-Pro tight end’s bid for an eighth straight 1,000-yard season.

Chris Jones played and got a sack in the third quarter to reach 10 1/2 on the season and collect a $1.25 million bonus.

Kansas City will host either Miami or Pittsburgh in a wild-card game on Saturday night.

The possibility that Gabbert might see action during the playoffs is not far-fetched, considering Mahomes has suffered injuries in the divisional round in two of the past three seasons. Chad Henne came in to preserve wins over Cleveland in the 2020 season and Jacksonville last year.

“Blaine did a great job with the long runs,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It gives those a young guys a lift not only to say that they got in but that they won the game.”

The only touchdown of the game came with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter when Mike Edwards returned a fumble 97 yards.

The Chargers (5-12) closed the season with five straight losses, the last three after coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco were fired on Dec. 15.

“We didn’t get the wins like we wanted to, but as far as what we were trying to accomplish, coming off of a difficult loss in Las Vegas, the character of these guys, I really think they rallied together and really fought for three games, I really do,” interim coach Giff Smith said.

Easton Stick, who started the last four games after Justin Herbert suffered a season-ending finger injury, was 28 of 47 passing for 258 yards and had 77 yards rushing on 13 carries. Donald Parham had five receptions for 83 yards.

Cameron Dicker kicked four field goals for the Chargers. Los Angeles ended the season without a touchdown in its last 10 quarters.

“There are a lot of really great people in there. Ultimately, when you go through a season like this that’s really tough — a lot of tough losses, it ended up nowhere near where we thought we would be at the start — that’s the stuff that you realize is important, and you’re thankful for,” Stick said.

Kansas City’s go-ahead drive followed Dicker’s 20-yard field goal with 4:06 remaining that put the Chargers on top for the first time. It was Los Angeles' second drive of 18 plays.

On third-and-7 at the KC 28-yard line, Gabbert had a 25-yard scramble up the middle to get the Chiefs into Chargers territory. After La'Mical Perine was held for no gain, Gabbert had a 14-yard run around right end to get into Butker's range at the two-minute warning.

Four plays later, Butker's second field goal capped a nine-play, 51-yard drive and dealt the Chargers their seventh loss in a game decided by three points or fewer.

The Chargers were on the 18th play of their opening possession when Stick was sacked by Chiefs defensive lineman Charles Omenihu at the Kansas City 5-yard line and fumbled. Edwards scooped the ball at the 3 and went 97 yards for the fourth touchdown of his five-year career.

It was the longest scoop-and-score in the NFL this season and the third-longest in Chiefs history.

According to Sportradar, it was the seventh time since 2000 a team had a drive of at least 18 plays and turned it over. It was the first of those on which a defensive touchdown was scored.

“That was a long drive, I’m not going to lie. Charles made a heck of a play,” Edwards said. “It was a big play for us and started us off early.”

Chiefs: OL Wanya Morris left in the second quarter with a concussion. ... WR Justyn Ross suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter and did not return. ... WR Rashee Rice (hamstring), WR Kadarius Toney (hip/ankle) and CB L’Jarius Sneed (calf) were inactive.

Chiefs win thrilling regular season finale over Chargers, will host Dolphins in AFC Wildcard game

TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Missouri Western women's basketball team got down by 11 points in the third quarter, but managed to lead it 52-49 with 9:27 left in the fourth.

That was about the last stroke of good fortune the Griffons would have Saturday. Northeastern State (6-7, 2-5 MIAA) ended the game on a 25-6 run and downed Missouri Western, 74-58, at the NSU Event Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma Saturday.

Missouri Western (10-4, 5-3 MIAA) shot just 3-of-13 in the fourth quarter and were outscored that period, 27-9.

Northeastern was led in scoring by Halie Jones, who dropped 21 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three. Tor'e Alford scored 18.

Tiani Ellison and Brionna Budgets led Missouri Western with 15 points - a season-high for both of them. But, the Griffons were held to just 34.5% from the field, including a 2-of-18 clip from three.

It didn't help that Missouri Western was 16-of-29 at the free throw line.

The loss snaps what was a five-game winning streak for the Griffons, and it's their first loss at Northeastern State since November 2020.

Griffon men use 20-0 first half run to put away Northeastern State

Northeastern State had a scoring drought in the first half that spanned nine minutes.

Missouri Western (11-3, 5-3 MIAA) took full advantage, reeling off a 20-0 run in that time and rolling to a 74-55 win in Tahlequah Saturday.

The Griffons led 37-19 at the break. The Riverhawks (5-8, 0-7 MIAA) got to within 15 points in the second half, but never closer.

The Griffons dominated on the glass all day, outrebounding the Riverhawks 45-26, including 18-6 on the offensive glass.

Missouri Western also shared the ball well, doling out 14 assists while only committing seven turnovers.

Zion Swader led the Griffons in scoring with 20 points, which included a 4-of-6 clip from three.

Taye Fields was unconscious with a game-high and career-high tying 19 rebounds. He also had 18 points, seven assists, a block and a steal.

JaRon Thames added 11 points. Kiani Saxon contributed 10.&nbsp;

The Missouri Western men have now won three straight and seven of the last eight meetings with NSU.

Both Griffon teams come back to St. Joseph on Saturday, January 13 for a rivalry matchup with Northwest Missouri State. The women play at 1:30, the men at 3:30. Both games are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3).

Both Bearcat teams were victorious at Rogers State Saturday. The Bearcat women (12-2, 6-2 MIAA) beat the Hillcats, 63-42. The Northwest men (11-3, 7-1 MIAA), ranked No. 19, beat Rogers 78-57.

MWSU men's basketball wins big at NSU, Griffon women fall to Riverhawks

The Kansas Wesleyan basketball teams will return to Mabee Arena tonight for their first home games of the new year as the Coyotes get set to welcome in the Tabor BlueJays

Women's Game: Kansas Wesleyan (6-7, 4-3), Tabor (10-3, 7-0)

Tabor has won seven of the last 10 games against KWU but the Coyotes have a 21-18 advantage since 2006. The Coyotes and Bluejays split last season, Tabor winning 60-50 on January 4 in Hillsboro and KWU prevailing 62-61 on February 23 in Mabee Arena.&nbsp;

The Bluejays average 70 points and hold their opponents 59, shooting 46.6 percent overall including an NAIA-best 42.6 percent from beyond the arc. 

Freshman Lillie Veer averages a team-best 9.1 points off the bench. Senior Madie Kassidy is next at 8.8 then senior Alivia Owens at 8.4 and senior Alicia Baker at 7.8. McCoy is the leading rebounder at 4.3.&nbsp;

Coyotes Return to Mabee to Take on Tabor

The Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals announced Friday their commitment to remain in Jackson County if Jackson County voters approve an extension of the 3/8-cent sales tax on a ballot initiative this April.

As part of the proposed agreement, the teams have agreed to provide more than $200 million in new economic benefits to Jackson County over 40 years in a new lease agreement, alleviating the county's obligation to pay stadium insurance premiums as well as the park levy to the teams.

 Under this agreement, the Chiefs will conduct an extensive renovation to Arrowhead Stadium and the Royals will build a new downtown stadium and privately fund a $1 billion ballpark district.

The clubs also pledged to give the county flexibility of up to $140 million from each team’s share of existing park property taxes.

The teams have not sought any increase in the existing sales tax. The teams will attempt to finalize a spot on the April ballot in a Jackson County legislative meeting on Monday. The deadline to get on the ballot is January 23.

Both Kauffman and Arrowhead opened in the early 1970s.

Missouri Western athletics announced Friday the hiring of&nbsp;Ryan Menley&nbsp;as senior associate athletic director for external relations. Menley previously served as the director of creative content for MWSU athletics from 2010-2022.

Menley will oversee marketing, communications and content in his new role. He'll also serve as the primary contact for the Gold Coat Victory Fund. "The chance to return to Griffon Nation in this particular position is an absolute honor," Menley said in a written statement. "It's a humbling opportunity, especially when you consider the character of the people who came before." "Excited is an understatement," MWSU athletic director Andy Carter said. "Ryan is a gifted and talented storyteller. His ability to communicate and grow the Griffon brand in various ways makes his return to St. Joseph a huge win for us. His love for and dedication to Missouri Western State University and Griffon Athletics makes this homecoming a special one."

Menley returns to Missouri Western after spending the last two years as associate A.D. of external relations at Division I University of Tennessee-Martin.

At UTM, he oversaw sports information, ESPN + broadcasting, creative content and athletics branding. He also served as the coordinator for special events.

A St. Louis native, Menley called St. Joseph home for 20 years and covered Missouri Western athletics that whole time. He was the sports director for KQTV from 2002-2010.

Once he joined MWSU, Menley created the university's&nbsp; athletic video production department from scratch. The "Griffon Sports Insider" brand included in-depth highlights, commercials and features. At the time, the department was one of the first of its kind at the NCAA Division II level.

Menley also oversaw the development of video board production and live broadcasts. He was an adjunct professor in the university's department of communications and a co-advisor for MWSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helping raise thousands of dollars for community service projects.

In the span of seven years, Menley won six National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) awards. He was the 2020-21 Service to the University Award winner at Missouri Western and was also the university's SOAR Advisor of the Year that same year.

He was also an Emmy winner during his time at KQ.

"I have a deep appreciation for our history," Menley continued. "Our athletic department and sports teams are riding a wave of momentum in the present. When tied together, it lights the way toward a bright future. Our job in external relations is to engage and ignite. We will communicate by collaboration. We will celebrate our success with passion. And we will tell our collective story with authenticity."

Menley will begin his duties on March 1. He fills a role that was left vacant after Paul Smith stepped down from the associate A.D. of external relations role this past December. Smith held the job for 16 months.

CLAREMORE, OK - The Missouri Western women's basketball team raced out to a 13-0 start and used a massive fourth quarter to blow out Rogers State, 84-44, at the Claremore Expo Center in Claremore, Oklahoma Thursday.

The Griffons (10-3, 5-2 MIAA) led by 21 points at halftime. Rogers State made a decent push in the third quarter, making it a 54-38 game to start the fourth quarter.

Missouri Western answered by hitting each of their first five three-point attempts in the fourth, and shooting 10-of-15 from the field in the final 10 minutes.

Rogers State (6-6, 1-5 MIAA) was just 1-of-18 in the fourth quarter, including 0-of-7 from three.

The Griffons held the Hillcats to just 22.6% shooting overall Thursday, while Missouri Western shot 50.8%, including 13-of-28 from three.

Jayme Jackson led Missouri Western with 17 points. Brionna Budgets turned in a season-high 15 points on a season-high four made three-pointers. Connie Clarke scored 11 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals.

The win is Missouri Western's fifth in a row. The Griffons are also now 6-0 against Rogers State in women's basketball all time.
