Bishop LeBlond senior Lane Harshman helped put Golden Eagle football on a strong path forward in 2022 along with a class of eight other seniors.

Harshman's contributions were enough to earn him an offer from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. Harshman signed his NLI for DWU on Thursday.

"It's a big relief," Harshman said, "because for awhile there, I didn't know where I was going. It's crazy. Coming into high school, I had never played football before. I never considered it before until sophomore year and coach (Chuck) Davis talked to me after some basketball games and told me to come out and play football, and here I am."

Harshman was part of a LeBlond team that went 10-4 this past fall. It marked the best season possibly ever for the Golden Eagles, as they advanced to their first ever state championship game and won a district title for the first time since 1993.

"(That team) showed the younger kids coming up that we can compete," LeBlond head coach Chuck Davis said. "In the past, if you won a district game or two, that was an accomplishment. But, now the bar has been set a little higher and (Lane) is a big part of that, because he's a competitor."

Harshman primarily played corner for LeBlond on defense, accounting for 38 total tackles in his senior year. He had been hampered by injury early in the season, but Davis says Harshman came back stronger than ever.

"He got hurt week one," Davis said of Harshman. "Dislocated rib, which is a big one to come back from. To come back the way he did and re-earn his starting spot and help us make it to the state championship was pretty cool and he's a hard worker. I didn't have any doubt in my mind he'd be able to do this."

Harshman isn't the biggest player on the field at 5-7 and 140 pounds, but he felt an immediate connection with the coaching staff and facilities once he went on a visit to Mitchell.

"They reached out and I went there," Harshman said. "Everything felt right with the coaches and I really liked the staff they had on hand. I got to talk to some of the other players. It just felt comforting. Like I was welcomed there."

LeBlond's Lane Harshman signs NLI for Dakota Wesleyan football Thursday

The Missouri Western women's basketball team used a strong second half effort to pull away from Washburn in a 67-47 win over the Ichabods on Wednesday night at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Both teams were limited offensively in the first half, as the Griffons led 23-17 at halftime. Missouri Western (19-5, 13-3 MIAA) settled in during the second half, scoring 44 points over the final two quarters combined, including 26 in the fourth.

"I just thought we really settled in and were much better the second half," Missouri Western coach Candi Whitaker said. "I thought Johnni (Gonzalez) was a big key to that. She did a fantastic job of finding shooters, making decisions and getting us into a much better offense the second half."

Defensively, the Griffons forced 22 turnovers and held Washburn to just 34 percent shooting from the field, including 3-of-11 from three.

Missouri Western's Brionna Budgets led the way with a game-high 29 points. The effort was enough to put her over 1,000 points in her Griffon career.

"It felt really good," Budgets said. "Just getting back into the flow of things. We had kind of been sick the last couple of days. Everyone was just playing strong, fighting through it, and staying true to ourselves."

Junior Connie Clarke was equally impressive with 17 points and 16 rebounds - her 10th double-double of the season. Clarke also logged a team-best six steals.

Whitaker says Clarke and Budgets were equally important in the winning effort Wednesday.

"I thought (Connie) was really good the entire game," Whitaker said. "And then Bri got hot and is starting to play like we know Bri can. She really found her rhythm, and she played really hard defensively. When Bri plays hard defensively, I feel like we're going to win."

The win put Missouri Western back in the win column after the Griffons absorbed a 91-55 loss at No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday - a loss that snapped an 11-game winning streak.

"We were rough at times but I thought our effort was good," Whitaker said. "I thought we battled. I saw a lot of people being physical. Did a lot of good things. Just looking forward to continuing to get better and coaching this group."

Griffon men outlast Washburn in OT, snap losing streak

The Missouri Western men weathered a series of runs from Washburn Wednesday, and were able to go on a critical run of their own when they needed it most.

The Griffons, down 65-55 with three minutes left in regulation, went on a 14-4 run to force overtime. Down 80-79 with 11 seconds left, Missouri Western snatched one from the jaws of defeat Wednesday, as JaRon Thames' layup with 2.5 seconds remaining lifted the Griffons to an 81-80 overtime win over the Ichabods at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

The victory snaps what was a six-game losing streak for the Griffons, and ended a five-game winning streak for Washburn.

"They just continue to fight and continue to believe," Missouri Western coach Will Martin said. "This is a really good Washburn team. We took, we say a full 40 minutes, but it took an extra five minutes. The guys just fought. They fought hard and these kids earned this one."

After getting down 17-7 in the opening eight minutes, Missouri Western (9-12, 5-10 MIAA) responded and ended up leading 34-30 at halftime.

Washburn (10-10, 7-7 MIAA) opened the second half on an 8-0 run to retake the lead, but once again the Griffons weathered the storm and hung in for much of the second half.

Suddenly, the Griffons were down 63-53 with 3:47 to play. After critical buckets from Thames, Will Eames, Julius Dixon and Taye Fields, Missouri Western led 69-68 with 48 seconds left in regulation before Washburn tied the game again at the free throw line.

Washburn took its first lead of the OT period with 11 seconds left, thanks to an Andrew Orr layup, but Thames took the ball up the floor the other way and hit the go-ahead shot off the glass with just 2.5 to go.

Washburn called their last timeout and were able to get the ball across midcourt, but a shot in the lane from Jarmell Johnson missed short, preserving victory for the Griffons.

Thames came off the bench Wednesday and scored 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Julius Dixon finished with a career-high 19 points. Eames, who had missed the previous seven games with a hand injury, had an outstanding return with 12 points and eight rebounds.

"It was so fun being out there," Eames said. "There's no pressure on me out there. I feel like I could go be myself. My team has my back. They lived with my mistakes early on, but when it was overtime, it felt like I had been playing all year."

Fields was key especially down the stretch with 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Missouri Western is back in the win column and certainly more dynamic with a healthy Will Eames back in the fold. With seven games left, the Griffons are not only in contention to make the MIAA tournament, but to overall have a strong finish to their 2022-23 campaign.

"You can turn this into momentum, but it's not momentum yet," Martin said. "It feels like momentum after all that we've been through, but if you have two good days of practice and can get it done against Emporia, that's two (in a row) and you're one day at a time and one game at a time."

Both Missouri Western teams stay home Saturday to host Emporia State. The women's game starts at 1:30, and the men's will follow at 3:30. Both games are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3, 680kfeq.com).

MWSU men's, women's basketball score wins over Washburn Wednesday

GOWER - East Buchanan seniors Ethan Bailey and Rylee Parker stood out as two of the cogs in the machine that helped the Bulldog football team to back-to-back Class 1 State championships in 2021 and 2022.

That success will now take the two to the next level together at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Bailey and Parker signed to continue their football careers as Tritons on National Signing Day. &nbsp;

For both Bailey and Parker, it was the coaching staff for the Tritons that made the decision an easy one. &nbsp;

"The coaches really made me feel like a family there and that's why I liked it," Bailey tells reporters. &nbsp;

"Coach Donovan, he's the one that recruited me, they were welcoming and their facilities were really nice," Parker says.&nbsp;

Bailey, already a massive piece of the Bulldog defense in 2021 when he compiled four sacks and 51 tackles in just 11 games, got even better in his senior year.&nbsp; The defensive lineman trailed only Parker in tackles with 133 and got to the quarterback seven times. &nbsp;

Bailey's accomplishments in his senior season also led him to the Blue-Grey All American Bowl in Dallas, Texas, where he continued to impress on the national stage with six tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.&nbsp; He also was named defensive player of the year in Class 1. &nbsp;

Bailey says he feels that the success he had in high school will help him immensely in college.&nbsp;

"The success I hope to have in college I think it's prepared me a lot," Bailey says. &nbsp;

Parker meanwhile led East Buchanan in tackles with 143, also a massive jump from 89 during his junior season, also bringing in one interception.&nbsp; He says this year really opened up his mind to playing football in college. &nbsp;

"You know, I started off in middle school as a lineman, and now I'm going to college as a linebacker," Parker says. "I never really thought I could make it until this year and I'm just excited to see what the future holds."&nbsp;

Another thing Parker says he's excited about is sharing the field again with Bailey in Iowa.&nbsp;

"He's a great friend, I see him as a brother, and I'm just really excited to play with him again," Parker says.&nbsp;

East Buchanan head football coach Dan Ritter says that going to the same college will be one of the greatest benefits for his two players. &nbsp;

"You got a guaranteed roommate if you want it, you've got someone to keep you accountable that knows you so you won't feel alone, you won't get that home sickness early cause you're doing it together," Ritter says. "And you always have this comradery, a fraternity if you will, of football guys around you so I think it's going to be a good fit for them and I'm excited to see what they do."&nbsp;

Bailey says he plans to major in physical therapy in college, while Parker says he'll major in business.&nbsp;

East Buchanan's Ethan Bailey and Rylee Parker continue football career at Iowa Central

SAVANNAH - Savannah senior Alex Hopper was a huge part in helping the Savage football team to one of its best seasons in recent memory.

Named the team MVP in 2022, Hopper led Savannah with 1323 all-purpose yards and 13 all-purpose touchdowns, as the Savages finished the fall with a 10-2 record - the most wins since 2019 and the first share of an MEC title since 2011.

Hopper's efforts were enough to get him an offer from Ottawa University in Kansas. After verbally committing in December, Hopper made it official with his signing on Wednesday.

"Just to know I've worked very hard for this day and be able to accomplish it means a lot," Hopper said.

Hopper was a versatile weapon for Savannah, as he rushed for 556 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for 273 yards and three scores. On special teams, he led the team with 249 kick return yards and 110 punt return yards.

As a defensive back, Hopper logged 45 tackles and an interception. When he got to visit Ottawa, he felt an immediate connection with their coaching staff.

"The facilities and the coaches," Hopper said. "They mean a lot to me. Touched my heart, actually. Just felt like that's where I want to be, and that's where my new home is."

Hopper and the Savages started last season with a 7-0 record. Savannah made it all the way to the district championship game, where they fell to rival Maryville on a last-second touchdown, 33-28.

Not the desired ending, but Hopper is grateful that he could help lay the foundation for the future.

"Our senior class will always be remembered for that," he said. "We'll have always something to come back to. If we ever do come back, we can see our 2022 (season) up there on the wall."

On special teams, he led the team with 249 kick return yards and 110 punt return yards.As a defensive back, Hopper logged 45 tackles and an interception. When he got to visit Ottawa, he felt an immediate connection with their coaching staff."The facilities and the coaches," Hopper said. "They mean a lot to me. Touched my heart, actually. Just felt like that's where I want to be, and that's where my new home is."Hopper and the Savages started last season with a 7-0 record. Savannah made it all the way to the district championship game, where they fell to rival Maryville on a last-second touchdown, 33-28.Not the desired ending, but Hopper is grateful that he could help lay the foundation for the future."Our senior class will always be remembered for that," he said. Savannah's Alex Hopper signs to Ottawa football Wednesday

Missouri Western athletic director Andy Carter announced Tuesday that Buzz Verduzco, the head coach of Missouri Western Baseball since 2000, will retire at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Just the second head coach in the history of Missouri Western Baseball, Verduzco enters his final season with a career record of 614-514, with a 428-337 mark in MIAA play.

Verduzco led the Griffons to the 2013 MIAA regular-season championship, earning MIAA Coach of the Year awards along the way, Verduzco's Griffon teams posted 16 winning seasons, advanced to 13 MIAA championship tournaments and four NCAA regional tournaments.

The Griffons start the 2023 season on Thursday, February 9 against Ouachita Baptist in the Henderson State Invitational in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Missouri Western baseball coach Buzz Verduzco retiring at end of 2023 season

Bishop LeBlond made 10 three-pointers and fended off a third quarter rally from East Buchanan, as the Eagles notched a 62-52 win over the Bulldogs on Senior Night at Grace Gymnasium.

LeBlond (14-6) raced out to a 13-3 lead and took a 30-18 lead into the locker room. The Eagles made four threes in the second quarter alone.

East Buchanan (11-5) got hot for a moment themselves, as sophomore Isaiah Watkins hit three triples in the third quarter, narrowing the deficit to 37-31.

After a LeBlond timeout, the Eagles had a big answer late in the third. Sophomore Cooper Waterman nailed three triples himself in that third quarter to help LeBlond carry a 52-36 advantage into the fourth.

East Buchanan, once again, closed a bit late in the game, but LeBlond coach Mitch Girres was able to empty his bench and play all four seniors on Senior Night.

Senior Jake Korell carried the banner Tuesday with a game-high 24 points.

"It's awesome," Korell said of the win. "Just all of the seniors put in all of the work and everything. Some of us are just going to remember it forever. It's...it's awesome."

Waterman followed with 17 points. Chris Miljavic had nine. Sophomore Isaiah Watkins led East Buchanan with 16 points. Junior Gage Busby finished with 12. Natan Schilling came off the bench with seven.

The win was a nice morale boost for LeBlond, which has now won six of its last seven games. The Eagles just came off of a loss to Richmond in the Richmond Winter Classic Championship on Saturday.

"Our schedule at the end of the season is always tough," Korell remarked. "Lafayette, Benton, St. Pius X. Tonight showed that it was a winnable game and we are who we are."

LeBlond is home to Savannah on Friday. East Buchanan is home to host Kipp KC Legacy on Wednesday.

Bishop LeBlond drains 10 threes, tops East Buchanan on Senior Night

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes scrambled for a first down on his badly sprained right ankle, then was shoved late out of bounds by Joseph Ossai, giving Harrison Butker a chance to kick a 45-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining and give the Kansas City Chiefs a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game Sunday night.

The Chiefs finally beat the Bengals after three straight losses, including a three-point overtime defeat in last year's title game, and will play the Philadelphia Eagles — coach Andy Reid's old team — in their third Super Bowl in four years.

“I’ve watched them all year long, great quarterback, great entire team,” Mahomes said of the Eagles. "It’s going to be a great challenge for us, but I’m going to celebrate this one first.

"I don’t think we have any cigars, but we’ll be ready to go in the Super Bowl.”

Mahomes, who hurt his ankle against Jacksonville in the divisional round, threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, even though he was missing three of his wide receivers to injuries by the end. Marquez Valdes-Scantling led the way with 116 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Kelce — bad back and all — had seven catches for 78 yards and a score.

Yet it was Mahomes on his balky right ankle, rather than with his strong right arm, that rescued the Chiefs.

“At some points in games, you’ve gotta just put it all on the line," Mahomes said. "The defense gave us a couple chances to get in field goal range, we didn’t get there. The defense got another stop for us and I knew I was going to get there somehow.

“So I just put it all on the line and we got in field goal range, and we’re at Arrowhead now and we’re in.”

The Chiefs got a crucial sack from Chris Jones to force a punt with 39 seconds left, and shaky return man Skyy Moore broke free for 29 yards on the return. On third-and-4 at the Bengals 47, Mahomes eluded pressure and scrambled toward the Bengals sideline, barely picking up the first down before Ossai gave him a shove from behind.

The penalty flags flew, the ball moved 15 yards closer and Butker’s kick barely had enough to get over the crossbar.

Joe Burrow, who was sacked five times and wobbly by the end, finished with 270 yards passing to go with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Bengals. Tee Higgins had six catches for 83 yards and the score.

The Chiefs were able to do early what the Buffalo Bills could not in last week’s divisional round: They ran roughshod over an ailing Bengals offensive line missing two starters to injury with another bothered by a sore knee.

Burrow was sacked three times in the first quarter alone and the Bengals offense did not gain a single yard.

Mahomes, whose ankle had been the subject of speculation all week, looked just fine leading Kansas City to a field goal on its opening possession. And when the Chiefs got the ball back, Mahomes did it again, but only after Kadarius Toney failed to pull in a nifty throw for a would-be touchdown — the incompletion was upheld upon review.

Cincinnati finally moved the ball in the second quarter, but it also had to settle for Evan McPherson’s chip-shot field goal.

So much for two of the league’s highest-scoring offenses.

The Chiefs finally reached the end zone late in the second quarter, moving briskly downfield behind a couple of nice grabs by Valdes-Scantling. The Bengals held on third-and-1 at their 14-yard line, but the Chiefs went for it and Mahomes hit Kelce loosely covered by Jessie Bates III for the touchdown.

The Bengals drove 90 yards in the closing minutes, but only added a field goal to get within 13-6 at the break.

Turns out their offense was just hitting its stride — and another classic was brewing.

After the Chiefs went three-and-out to start the second half, Burrow led the Bengals downfield, bolting through a yawning hole in the defense for a third-down conversion before hitting Higgins from 27 yards out to knot the game 13-all.

Mahomes, suddenly down three wide receivers to injuries and beginning to limp, gamely pressed on. He answered Burrow with a touchdown drive of his own, capped by a third-down throw to Valdes-Scantling to regain the lead.

The Chiefs had a chance to gain some breathing room later in the third quarter, but Mahomes somehow lost control of the ball before throwing a pass and the Bengals pounced on the fumble. Six players later — including an audacious fourth-down throw from Burrow to Ja’Marr Chase — Samaje Perine ran into the end zone to tie it at 20.

Burrow gave the Chiefs a chance when his deep throw to Higgins on third down was batted into the air and picked by rookie cornerback Josh Williams. Mahomes managed to move the Chiefs past midfield, but two runs went nowhere and his third-down throw to Jerick McKinnon was well short, forcing them to punt in Bengals territory.

The Chiefs defense held, though, giving Mahomes and their offense one more try.

The Chiefs got a second chance on third down early in the fourth quarter, when referee Ron Torbert said the game clock and play clock would begin on his whistle. Only problem was the play came after an incompletion, so the game clock should not have started.

The Bengals stopped the Chiefs, but Torbert ruled the play didn’t count because of the clock goof — and they wound up getting a first down on Eli Apple’s defensive holding penalty. Kansas City eventually punted anyway.

Next stop Glendale: Chiefs advance to Super Bowl LVII with 23-20 win over Bengals

HAYS, KS - Missouri Western women's basketball had already made some pretty sweet memories at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays within the past year after winning the Central Region championship there last March.

The Griffons certainly added to their memory bank on Thursday. Missouri Western (18-4, 12-2 MIAA) survived a double-overtime thriller and beat Fort Hays State 82-81, giving the Griffons their first regular season win at Hays since January 2007.

It also marked the 200th career win for Missouri Western coach Candi Whitaker.

The game started about as perfectly as it could have for the Griffons, as Western led 24-10 at the end of the first quarter after junior Brionna Budgets scored a staggering 20 points in the first 10 minutes alone.

Fort Hays State (15-7, 10-4 MIAA) started inching closer, as the Tigers only trailed 32-23 at halftime. Hays outscored Missouri Western in the third period 19-10 and tied the game at 42-42 headed to the fourth.

The fourth quarter was as evenly matched as it could be, as Hays' Olivia Hollenbeck's layup tied the game 60-60 with 24 seconds left in regulation.

The Griffons then got down 67-62 with 1:30 left in the first overtime. But a Brionna Budgets layup and a massive three-pointer from Jordan Cunningham tied the game in the final minute.

A steal and fast break layup by Alyssa Bonilla gave the Griffons a 69-67 lead with 16 seconds left in the first OT, but free throws by Hays' Sydney Golladay with six seconds remaining tied the game at 69, and sent the contest to a second OT.

Missouri Western got off to a great start in that period and led 76-70 with 1:43 left, but Hays fought back yet again and even took the lead, 81-80, with just over four seconds left after a running layup by Golladay went down.

The Griffons used their final timeout and got the ball in the halfcourt. Cunningham threw the ball directly in the lane to Connie Clarke, who gathered the ball, backpedaled just a bit and threw the ball up off the glass and through the rim, putting the Griffons up 82-81 with 2.2 to go.

Hays had a look at a halfcourt shot at the buzzer, but it fell well short.

Budgets led the Griffons with a game-high 29 points. Clarke had 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Mary Fultz came off the bench and had 12 points and 10 rebounds to score her first career double-double.

Cunningham had 11 points, while Bonilla had eight points and a game-high three steals.

Katie Wagner led Fort Hays State with 20 points and 17 rebounds. The Griffons have now won 11 straight games and got some revenge after Hays beat the Griffons in St. Joseph 64-58 earlier this season on Dec. 10, 2022.

FHSU men pull away late, down Missouri Western Thursday

The Missouri Western men's basketball team trailed by 13 at halftime and were only down 12 with 10:46 left in the game. But over that final 10:46, Fort Hays State outscored the Griffons 28-13 and the Tigers rolled to a 75-48 win at Gross Memorial Coliseum Thursday.&nbsp;

Hays (14-6, 9-5 MIAA) shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, and made 10-of-18 from beyond the arc through the whole game.

Missouri Western also turned the ball over 19 times, which led to 27 points the other way for Hays. The Tigers, meanwhile, turned the ball over just seven times the whole game.

Kaleb Hammeke led Hays with a game-high 25 points on an impressive 10-of-13 shooting from the field. JaRon Thames led Missouri Western with 13 points. Reed Kemp came off the bench to score 11 for the Griffons.

Missouri Western has now dropped five straight games and eight of their last nine. Ethan Kilgore was out for a second straight game with a foot injury, while Will Eames remains out as he recovers from a surgery on his hand.

Both Griffon teams are at Nebraska-Kearney Saturday. The women play at 2 and the men at 4. Both games are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3, 680kfeq.com).

The Loper women are ranked No. 13 and come in at 19-3, which sets up for a huge matchup against the 18-4 Griffons, who have won 11 straight.&nbsp;

The Kearney men are 3-16 overall and just 1-12 in MIAA play.

MWSU WBB wins double OT thriller at FHSU, Griffon men fall to Tigers Thursday

DEARBORN - In the first three meetings between Bryce Kemper's Mid-Buchanan and his son, Braydn Kemper's North Platte, the Dragons had won by an average of 23 points.

On Tuesday, Braydn came as close as he ever had to beating Dad. In fact, the Panthers were on the verge of breaking a 12-game losing streak to the Dragons, which dates back to 2016.

With Tuesday's game knotted at 42, and with under 10 seconds left, Mid-Buchanan's Joe Clark passed the ball underneath to teammate Cade Brinton, whose layup went all the way around the edge of the rim and finally through the cylinder, lifting the Dragons to a 44-42 win in the first round of the North Platte tournament.

"We wanted to get the win," Brinton said. "It was a big game, you know. Dad versus son. So, we wanted to go out there and get the win and keep moving on in the tournament."

The game featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes, unofficially. Neither team ever led by more than three points.

North Platte led 11-9 at the end of the first, but Mid-Buchanan led 22-20 at halftime, thanks to a buzzer-beater triple from Raife Smith.

The game was tied at 33 entering the fourth, and after a long scoring drought by both teams in the middle of the fourth, it was tied again at 42-42 in the final minute.

With 41.1 seconds left, North Platte had the ball. After each team spent a timeout, and after each team got a stop, it was Panther ball once again with less than 20 seconds left.

Mid-Buchanan played a trap defense near midcourt, and the Dragons were able to knock the ball free and win possession off of a tip with 15.9 remaining.

After another flurry of timeouts from both sides, Mid-Buchanan drew up their final play with just over seven seconds left. Clark plugged the lane, and then passed it off at the last second to Brinton, who put it off the glass, around the rim and down.

"I was a little nervous," Brinton admitted. "I just tried to get it in there. It kind of just spun around for a minute. You couldn't have asked for a better shot."

Brinton had five points, while Clark led Mid-Buchanan with 12 points and at least five blocks. Ian Wegenka finished with seven points. Jackson Wahlgren, Raife Smith and Jackson Sauvage each scored six.

Creek Johnson led North Platte with a game-high 21 points. Dylan Armstrong followed with 10.

It was the fourth, and by far the closest edition of Bryce vs. Braydn Kemper to date.

"He's going to get me at some point I'm sure," Bryce said of Braydn. "I'm just glad it wasn't today. I can put it off for another year, anyway. (North Platte) has a real good, young team. They're hungry and they've gotten a lot better as the year has gone on. So, I'm proud of (Braydn) from that standpoint."

Mid-Buchanan advances to face West Platte (10-5) in semifinals on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. North Platte sees Braymer in consolation on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

GIRLS: North Platte 50 Mid-Buchanan 43

The Panthers (16-2) won their 10th straight game to open up play in their home tournament Tuesday. Kenedie Summers led the way with 14 points. Jaylin Burgess had 11, while Karli Guinn scored 10.

Kamryn Lippold led Mid-Buchanan with 11 points. Mallie Lieffring had nine.

North Platte faces West Platte in semifinals on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Mid-Buchanan faces Polo in consolation on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.

Mid-Buchanan sneaks by North Platte in thrilling NP tournament game 

&nbsp;(AP) - The Kansas City Royals have acquired left-hander Josh Taylor from the Boston Red Sox for injury prone shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and an additional player.

Tuesday marked the second straight day that Kansas City dealt one of its surplus position players in a bid to upgraded its lackluster bullpen. On Monday night, the Royals sent starting centerfielder Michael A. Taylor to the AL Central-rival Minnesota Twins for a pair of pitching prospects, Steven Cruz and Evan Sisk, that could help the big league bullpen as soon as this season.

Cruz, a 6-foot-6 power right-hander, went 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA, 35 walks and 72 strikeouts in 56 innings last season for Double-A Wichita. In 120 career minor league appearances, he has 259 strikeouts in 192 1/3 innings.

Sisk, a left-hander with a funky delivery, split last season between Wichita and Triple-A St. Paul. He went 5-1 with a 1.57 ERA, 29 walks and 76 strikeouts in 63 innings between the teams.

The 31-year-old Taylor hit .254 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 414 at-bats last season for the Royals. Drew Waters and Kyle Isbel, who shared time in the outfield last season, are the front-runners to take over his spot in the lineup.

The 30-year-old Josh Taylor missed all of last season with a back injury, but he was stellar over the previous three seasons in Boston, with a 3.69 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 121 appearances. At one point during the 2021 season, he had a streak of 26 consecutive scoreless outings, the longest streak for a left-hander in franchise history.

He also pitched in six of 11 postseason games for the Red Sox in '21, allowing one earned run over four innings pitched.

Mondesi signed with the Royals in 2011 and has played his entire career with the club. He made his big league debut in the 2015 World Series, when it seemed as if his future was limitless. But despite elite speed and defense, and showing flashes at the plate, Mondesi was never able to stay healthy, appearing in just 109 games over the past three seasons.

Despite having one year left on his deal, Mondesi's future with the Royals was thrown in doubt last season, when heralded prospect Bobby Witt Jr. made his debut. He proceeded to hit .252 with 20 homers and 30 stolen bases.

Royals get LHP Josh Taylor from Boston for oft-injured Adalberto Mondesi

DEARBORN - North Andrew rallied from a 10-point, first half deficit and needed a go-ahead three-pointer in the final 25 seconds to fend off Mound City, 56-54, in the opening round of the North Platte tournament Monday night.

Mound City (11-8) got off to a 7-2 start and led 27-17 midway through the second quarter after dominating on the glass early. North Andrew (13-4) closed the gap, pulled down some rebounds and only trailed 33-29 at the break.

The Cardinals came out hot in the second half, starting the third quarter on a 7-0 run. A three-pointer by senior Hayden Ecker gave the Cardinals their first lead at 36-33 with 4:43 left in the third.

"I feel like it gave the team the boost we needed to come back," said sophomore Braxon Linville, who led North Andrew Monday with 25 points. "I feel like that gave us the energy boost we needed to get in transition and get a couple of buckets, and we just kept playing from there."

Mound City eventually answered, but the Cardinals led 45-42 entering the fourth. The Panthers then got down by nine after a 6-0 Cardinal run, but Mound City reeled off a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 51 with 1:57 remaining.

Mound City briefly retook the lead in the closing minute after a basket-and-one by senior Trevor Tubbs. But on the ensuing possession, Linville passed the ball on the left corner to an open Trey McDaniel, who knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer with 20 seconds left.

"We were trying to get Braxon to drive down the right-hand side for a layup," North Andrew coach Wade Bryson said. "Braxon made a great read. They triple-teamed him and he found Trey in the corner. Trey stepped up, shot it with confidence and knocked it down."

North Andrew missed the front end of a one-and-one twice in the those last 20 seconds, giving Mound City a couple of chances to tie or even win the game, but the Panthers came up empty.

Senior Gunner Lawrence had nine points for North Andrew, while fellow senior Collin Patterson tallied eight. Bryson said once Linville got going, and once the Cardinals started getting rebounds, the tables turned in their favor.

"Early in the game, (Mound City) got a lot of offensive boards," Bryson pointed out. "That put us in a little bit of a hole, but our guys responded well, especially led by Braxon. Stepping up and it started with his rebounds. He had some one-on-three type rebounds and then we got out in transition, got some buckets and were able to come back."

Senior Gavyn Salsbury led Mound City with 18 points, including eight points in the fourth quarter. Tubbs had 17, while fellow senior Chanse Summers scored 11.

North Andrew advances to Thursday's semifinal round to face Platte Valley (17-1), who defeated Polo Monday, 44-30. It'll be a rematch of the Stanberry tournament championship, when Platte Valley beat North Andrew 60-34 on January 14.

It was a game where Linville couldn't play due to illness.

"I bet we put in a couple of things for them and then play our hearts out," Linville said. "We'll see."

North Andrew rallies, fends off Mound City in tight game at North Platte tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hobbling along on an injured ankle, Patrick Mahomes threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns Saturday, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and a spot in their fifth straight AFC title game.

Mahomes missed most of the second quarter after his ankle was landed on by a Jacksonville defender. But the All-Pro quarterback returned in the second half and, relying on guts and guile, led the Chiefs on a 75-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter that helped to ensure a date with the Bengals-Bills winner for a spot in the Super Bowl.

If Cincinnati wins Sunday, the AFC title game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium. If Buffalo wins, it will be in Atlanta.

“I mean, it’s a credit to the guys around me," Mahomes said. “The offensive line kept me clean in the pocket, knowing that I couldn’t move, and guys made plays around me. That’s what a great team does, is when somebody gets a little banged up, everybody around them steps up.”

The question on everyone's mind — Will Mahomes be available next week? — might be no question at all.

“Yeah, X-rays were negative and they haven’t diagnosed anything yet,” he said, "but I’ll be good to go.”
