St. Joseph Central's Ali Perry ended her high school golf career with a state championship in the Class 4 state golf meet at Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar.

Perry shot a 74 on both days of the tournament and finished with a two-day score of 148, tying for first with Page Bowman of Glendale.

Perry, a senior, medaled seventh at state her junior year and placed 13th as a sophomore.

South Harrison won the team title in Sedalia with a team score of 821 - 24 strokes ahead of second place East Atchison.

East Buchanan finished fourth as a team with a score of 866. Anna Kenagy was the highest placing Bulldog in the field, finishing 24th overall with a score of 208.

On the individual leaderboard in Class 1, Bishop LeBlond's Claire Heater tied for 16th with a two-day score of 202.

Maryville finished fourth in the team standings with a score of 749. Four Spoofhounds finished in the top 25, led by Cailyn Auffert, who tied for 16th with a score of 182.

St. Joseph Central's Ali Perry a state champion in girls' golf, East Buchanan places fourth

FAUCETT - The Mid Buchanan softball team got off to a fast start and held off a late charge from North Platte to claim their third straight&nbsp; district championship on Monday, defeating North Platte 6-4 in the Class 2 District 7 championship game at Mid-Buchanan High School.

The Dragons got off to an early lead, following a 1-2-3 inning by senior starting pitcher Emma Lisenbee in the top of the first.

A leadoff hit by Sophia Smith was followed by a Morgan Marshall triple that scored Smith.  Not long after, Paige Bennett stepped to the plate and got a single of her own, scoring Marshall and putting Mid-Buchanan up 2-0 after the first.  

Mid-Buchanan added two more runs in the bottom of the second, again thanks to Marshall, who with runners on second and third, singled and drove in two runs, giving her three RBIs on the day and making the score 4-0 Dragons after two. 

The  Panthers got a run back in the third inning on a Brooke Kretzer single, but with a runner in scoring position, Lisenbee got out of the jam, holding North Platte to just the one run and making the score 4-1.

North Platte came out swinging in the fifth, however, recording three straight hits - the third pushing a run across and forcing Mid-Buchanan to switch pitchers, bringing on sophomore reliever Kaylea Myers.

A walk from Myers loaded the bases, bringing Courtney Dehn to the plate.  Dehn singled, bringing across another run and keeping the bases loaded. With Camryn Kersten at the plate, Myers gave up another walk, tying the game at 4-4 in the fifth.

With the Dragons looking for an answer, up to the plate stepped freshman Dru Pearson.  With Bennett standing at first base, Pearson deposited a home run to left center field, causing her dugout to erupt out onto the field and celebrate at the plate.

The Dragons reclaimed the lead for good at 6-4 in the fifth.

Pearson, who was 2-for-3 on the day, says she didn't expect to hit the go-ahead home run.  

"My previous at bats I was not doing too well and I was very frustrated and then I just kind of kept my head up and then it happened," Pearson told reporters following the game. 

With the lead back in hand, Myers settled in and recorded six straight outs to give Mid-Buchanan their third straight district championship.  

With the Dragons in the midst of a record setting season, head coach Rob Davenport says this one in this run has been key. 

"I told the girls the hardest thing is winning your district, especially when you look at a district like ours that's all-conference teams, we know each other inside and out," Davenport says.

"So, that's the hardest step, now that doesn't mean it's going to get easier, but the further you get away from your conference the less people know and so it kind of helps you a little bit." 

Lisenbee says it feels great to get another district title under her belt. 

"We put in a lot of hard work, a lot of time, it took a lot of effort," Lisenbee said. "We kept our heads up, we cheered loud, and we cheered each other on and that's what got us through it." 

Mid-Buchanan is now 32-4 on the season, and now advances to the state quarterfinals.

Mid-Buchanan will host Carrollton in state quarters. It's a Carrollton team that the Dragons beat 10-2 back on September 3h during the Mid-Buchanan tournament.

State quarterfinals will begin this Saturday.

Benedictine rushes for new season high in win to open Heart South play

The #18 Benedictine Ravens opened up Heart South play in dominant fashion compiling 565 yards of total offense, including a season high 308 rushing yards, on way to a 59-21 win over Central Methodist in Fayette, Missouri on Saturday.&nbsp;

It was a balanced effort for the Ravens as aside from all that offense, the Benedictine defense held Central Methodist to negative rushing yards, all positive yards for the Eagles coming through the air as they passed for 226 yards.&nbsp;

The Ravens opened up the scoring quickly, putting up 21 unanswered points in the first quarter alone, getting passing touchdowns of two yards between Jackson Dooley and Tanner Zimmerman, and just two minutes later of 38 yards from Dooley to Jacob Gathright.&nbsp; With 30 seconds left in the first frame Shawn Wara scored his first of three touchdowns, rushing in from one yard out.&nbsp;

The lead would be pushed to 28-0 early into the second quarter, with just inside 10 minutes remaining, as backup quarterback Kaden Austin would connect with Zimmerman this time from five yards out giving the receiver his second touchdown of the game.

Central Methodist would finally get on the board with just over five minutes left in the half, needing just three plays to do so, as Joe Cambridge would find AJ Allen for a 14 yard touchdown, narrowing the lead to 28-7.&nbsp; But the Ravens would answer to close out the half, with 18 seconds left after a 12 play drive that went 66 yards and used just over five minutes of clock, Wara would score his second touchdown of the game making it 35-7 which is where it set at halftime.&nbsp;

The Eagles would start a comeback effort in the second half, scoring the first two touchdowns of the second half, the first coming on the offensive side of the ball as Cambridge would zip the ball to Zane Rice for a five yard touchdown, the second coming on the next defensive drive as Omarion Slaw would pick off Austin, taking the ball 39 yards to the house and narrowing the lead to 35-21.

But that's where the comeback attempt would end for Central Methodist, Benedictine scoring 28 unanswered points to close out the game, with two of those scores coming in the third quarter as Wara would score his third and final touchdown of the game breaking off a big 42 yard run and then Dooley would return to the game to find Gathright for his second touchdown, this time for a 21 yard score, pushing the lead to 49-21 going into the final quarter.&nbsp;

Dooley would connect with Gathright again early into the fourth quarter, with just over 10 minutes remaining, making another big pass for a 35 yard touchdown pass, making the lead 56-21.&nbsp; The Ravens would go on to score their final points of the game near the end, with 2:50 remaining on the clock sending Harry Balke out to convert a 38 yard field goal.

Despite missing some time in the game, Dooley passed for 200 yards even going 12 of 17 and throwing four touchdowns and one interception.&nbsp; Wara rushed 12 times for 142 yards and his three scores while Dalton Witherspoon rushed 17 times for 111 yards.&nbsp; Gathright was the leading receiver with seven catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns, Zimmermans two touchdown catches were his only two catches of the game.&nbsp;

The Ravens could see themselves going up in the rankings again when the polls are released on Monday, improving to 5-2 (1-0 Heart South) on the season.&nbsp; Next up Benedictine will return home for Homecoming and another Heart South opponent, hosting Missouri Valley on Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 1pm.

Missouri bounces back from LSU loss with big win over Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — With nothing working initially against No. 24 Kentucky, Missouri gambled on deception to find a spark.

It paid off with a touchdown, and the Tigers followed that up with inspired play to spark a sorely needed victory.

Brady Cook threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Missouri scored on a fake punt during a 20-point outburst in a 38-21 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night.

A week after allowing 14 points in the final three minutes of a 49-39 loss to No. 23 LSU, the Tigers (6-1, 2-1 SEC) trailed the Wildcats (5-2, 2-2 SEC) 14-0 before seizing momentum in the second quarter with trickery. Luke Bauer looked ready to punt before stepping back and lobbing a pass down the left sideline to Marquis Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown. Williams had a step on Kentucky’s Andru Williams, jumped to grab the ball and sprinted in for the easy score.

“We ran it all week and I had a feeling we would run it," Bauer said, noting his baseball background for the throw. “For a second I thought it wouldn't get there and then I saw him jump for it and I was like, ‘it was really happening.’”

“The fake punt that sparked us was unbelievable," added Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz, crediting special teams coordinator Erik Link for recognizing the potential to run it. “We just needed something to believe in. We rolled with it. Down 14-0, what do you have to lose?”

Cook took charge from there with his arm and feet.

The nation's sixth-best passer sandwiched an 18-yard touchdown pass to Theo Wease Jr. between two Harrison Mevis field goals for a 20-14 lead at halftime, then answered a Kentucky touchdown with a 1-yard score to restore Missouri's lead early in the fourth. Cody Schrader added a two-point conversion run to make 28-21, then ran for a 19-yard TD minutes later to seize control for good in a sometimes-chippy contest.

While Cook also praised Bauer for getting it started, he had good words for Missouri's other units for responding to help stop the Wildcats' roll and taking their homecoming crowd of 61,654 out of it.

“We played complementary football,” said Cook, who completed 10 of his final 12 passes to finish 19 of 29 for 167 yards with an interception. “Credit to the defense and special teams. When we needed to close it out, we found a way to get it done. I thought we did a good job of handling the environment and keeping our composure.”

The Tigers' defense also turned the tables with two interceptions among three takeaways, six tackles for loss and four sacks. Missouri outgained Kentucky 324-286, 308-136 after the first quarter.

Devin Leary threw TD passes to Ray Davis (20 carries, 128 yards) and Anthony Brown-Stephens and rushed for a 13-yard score to give Kentucky leads, but was otherwise harassed, getting sacked four times and throwing two interceptions. The Wildcats sought a rebound from last week's 51-13 rout at top-ranked Georgia, but were thoroughly outplayed the final three quarters.

“(To) start 14-nothing and then have the fake punt definitely it’s one of those plays that kind of feels like it punches you right in the gut," coach Mark Stoops said. "And we didn’t respond very good after that.”

Kentucky will move out of the rankings after a second consecutive loss. Missouri was the first team out last week and could return after a one-week absence.

The Tigers needed a quarter to regroup after being initially swamped, but were dominant after that in all phases in ending a two-game slide against Kentucky. They converted all six red-zone chances with Mevis kicking field goals from 25, 31 and 29 yards.

Missouri hosts South Carolina on Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 pm and the game will be aired on SEC Network.

K State Freshman Avery Johnson sets FBS record in win over Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Freshman quarterback Avery Johnson played the entire second half while starter Will Howard watched because Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said Texas Tech was giving the Wildcats the QB run game.

Still, there will be questions about what's next under center for the defending Big 12 champions.

Johnson ran for five touchdowns, a first in FBS this season, while sharing time with Howard before taking over after the break, and Kansas State beat the Red Raiders 38-21 on Saturday night.

“That’s why we stayed with Avery because if they’re going to play a deep safety and give you quarterback run, then we’re going to make people pay for it,” Klieman said. “Had we had to get into a game where we’re throwing the heck out of it, who knows what we would have done?”

Johnson finished with 91 yards rushing as the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) bounced back from a surprising loss at Oklahoma State with an eighth consecutive victory in the series.

Jake Strong led a 99-yard drive to the only lead for Texas Tech (3-4, 2-2 Big 12) in his debut in the third quarter after replacing injured starter Behren Morton. But the freshman threw three interceptions after the Wildcats had gone back in front.

Morton, who was starting because of the third long-term injury in as many seasons to Tyler Shough, was slow to get up several times in the first half and was ruled out after the break.

Coach Joey McGuire said Morton had already been dealing with a shoulder injury before the Red Raiders had a two-game conference winning streak stopped after a disappointing 1-3 start to his second season.

“I’m frustrated right now because I think you’ve always got to find a way to win no matter who’s out there,” McGuire said. “This is going to go back to, ‘Yeah, hey, you lose your starting quarterback.’ But at the end of the day, we didn’t play good enough football to win the game.”

Strong's second series started at the Texas Tech 1-yard line, but his 13-yard pass got the drive going.

Strong ran 54 yards to set up an 8-yard scoring pass on third down, when he lofted a pass just as he was hit hard in the pocket and Jerand Bradley got a foot down as he fell out the back of the end zone to give the Red Raiders a 21-17 lead.

Johnson, whose only other touchdown came in a blowout of Southeast Missouri State in the opener, replaced Howard on the third series and scored on a 2-yard run for a 10-0 lead.

Howard, a senior closing in on 30 career games but coming off a three-interception showing against the Cowboys, returned several times in the first half.

His 30-yard run put Kansas State back in front for good at 24-21, and Johnson's 11-yard score put the Wildcats up 10 the first play after VJ Payne's 17-yard return of Strong's first interception.

After Kobe Savage corralled Strong's third interception in the end zone, Johnson led an 80-yard drive to the game-sealing score, a 3-yard run for his fifth TD.

The Wildcats finished with 436 yards a week after generating a season-low 372 in a 29-21 loss to Oklahoma State.

“We just needed to stay the course, block out the outside noise and listen to the inside noise of coaches, support staff, your teammates that do believe in you all the time,” Klieman said.

&nbsp;The Wildcats appeared to have a chance for a three-score lead just before halftime when linebacker Jake Clifton forced a fumble on a catch by Cam’Ron Valdez and Kansas State recovered inside the Texas Tech 25. But Clifton made helmet-to-helmet contact with Valdez and was ejected for targeting. Texas Tech then drove for a touchdown and a 17-14 halftime deficit.

Treshaun Ward had 118 yards rushing as the Wildcats finished with 273 yards on the ground, the most allowed by Texas Tech this season. Tahj Brooks ran for 98 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech, and Morton scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Kansas State has TCU at home next Saturday in a rematch of last year's Big 12 championship game, when the Wildcats handed the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 6pm and the game will be aired on ESPN2.

Despite holding halftime lead, Kansas falls 39-32 to Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy decided to let Ollie Gordon II cook.

Gordon gained 284 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns to help Oklahoma State defeat No. 23 Kansas 39-32 on Saturday.

Gordon ran for a career-high 168 yards and caught six passes for a career-best 116. He became the first Oklahoma State player since Gerald Hudson in 1989 to have at least 100 yards rushing and receiving in a game and the first Oklahoma State running back since Rafael Denson in 1992 to gain at least 100 yards receiving.

“When he’s hot, we’ve got to pound him and let him go," Gundy said. "And he’s getting emotionally driven but he’s not out of control. Last year, he used to get emotionally driven. He was out of control. You have to play with energy and enthusiasm, but if you play out of control, you’re not helping anybody because you can’t think. And he’s not doing that this year. And the line is feeding off of him.”

Gordon had a career-high 29 carries on the day former Oklahoma State running back Terry Miller was added to the Ring of Honor at Boone Pickens Stadium.

“He was just talking to me and he told us to go out there and handle business,” Gordon said. “So I had to do it for him.”

Alan Bowman passed for 336 yards and two touchdowns, Rashod Owens had career highs of nine catches and 112 yards and Brennan Presley caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score with 2:32 remaining for Oklahoma State (4-2, 2-1 Big 12). The Cowboys gained 554 yards to win their second straight after upsetting Kansas State last Friday.

Kansas (5-2, 2-2) was without quarterback Jalon Daniels for the third straight game because of a back injury. Jason Bean stepped in and passed for career highs of 410 yards and five touchdowns, but he threw two interceptions.

“He struggled a little bit there late in the fourth, obviously," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. "But before that, I thought he played outstanding. I thought he made some really nice throws and created some things with his feet. But there’s some plays I wish we all had back.”

The Jayhawks had an extra point blocked, failed on another extra-point try because of a bad snap and threw incomplete on a two-point conversion attempt.

On the game's opening drive, Gordon caught a 50-yard pass from Bowman, then hauled in a short pass and took it 17 yards to the end zone. On the next drive, Bowman found Presley for a 20-yard score to make it 14-0.

Bean rallied the Jayhawks by throwing four touchdown passes in the first half. The fourth, a 49-yarder to Quentin Skinner, put Kansas up 25-24 — a score that held up until the break. Bean completed 13 of 17 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Bowman passed for 261 yards and two scores for the Cowboys while Gordon had 177 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the first two quarters.

Alex Hale missed a 43-yard field goal with 9:38 remaining that would have put Oklahoma State up 33-32.

Minutes later, Kansas went for it on fourth-and-5 from the Oklahoma State 40. Oklahoma State's Collin Oliver rushed in and forced a fumble. Kansas recovered, but it was a turnover on downs.

Leipold thought Oliver was offsides. He was frustrated with the officiating during and after the game.

“Oh, we thought the guy was offsides,” Leipold said. "I guess it’s what you’re asking, if the guy was offsides, right? Because everybody’s nodding their head in the room almost, right? It’s baffling. Baffling sometimes.”

Oklahoma State took advantage. Presley went in motion, took the handoff and scored from 6 yards out to put the Cowboys ahead for good. Kansas got the ball down seven with 15 seconds remaining and no timeouts and could not mount a threat.

The Jayhawks moved the ball, but their defense struggled. The Cowboys entered the game averaging 4.3 yards a carry, but they averaged 5.7 on Saturday.

Kansas entered the game ranked sixth nationally with 232.3 yards per game, but finished with 90 yards on 29 carries. Gundy said limiting the Kansas ground attack was Oklahoma State’s primary focus on defense.

Leipold said he believes Daniels could return this season.

“It’s kind of like last year’s deal," he said. "He wasn’t out for the season and no one’s told me that he’s out for the season this year. It still stays that. And you can see him moving a lot better than he has been. And so hope? Yeah. I have no reason not to.”

Kansas will likely drop out. Oklahoma State may get some votes.

Kansas hosts No. 5 Oklahoma on Oct. 28.&nbsp; Kickoff time is still to be determined.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers had the week off and will begin to prepare for Northwestern looking to earn a second win in a row.&nbsp; Nebraska will kickoff against the Wildcats, who are also coming off a bye week, at 2:30pm and the game will air on the Big Ten Network.

A fierce rivalry between Missouri Western State University and Northwest Missouri State University was reignited on the gridiron as the Griffons sought their first win over the Bearcats since 2012.&nbsp; But after a hard fought battle, it was Northwest that came out on top for a 12th straight year, winning 27-23 at Spratt Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The scoring got started by the Griffons midway through the first quarter.&nbsp; Following a six play drive by the Bearcats that ended with a Cole Lammel punt, Missouri Western's offense would go to work.&nbsp; Missouri Western Head Coach Tyler Fenwick would be aggressive early as early on in the drive the Griffons would face a fourth and one in Northwest territory, which Western would go on to convert thanks to Seth Cromwell rushing the sole yard he needed to get a first down.&nbsp;

Later on in the drive Western again would face a fourth and eight, once again Fenwick would go for it, converting again as Jonas Bennett would rush for 10 yards, getting to the Northwest 18 yard line.&nbsp; 

But the drive would stall following a two yard rush from Jared Scott.&nbsp; A sack on quarterback Armani Edden, a Western false start, and then an incomplete pass from Edden would make it 4th and 22, to which the Griffons would trot out Cody Watson who would nail a 47 yard field goal with 4:55 left in the quarter.

The Bearcats would answer with a field goal of their own though on the ensuing drive, which started at their own 36 yard line, but quarterback Mike Hohensee would orchestrate a drive to get Northwest to the Missouri Western 19 yard line, where the drive would end after a Noah Guastella 36 yard field goal, knotting the game up at 3-3 with one minute left in the frame.&nbsp;

Missouri Western made a big play to end the first quarter after receiving the kickoff following the field goal.&nbsp; After Edden rushed for six yards to start the drive, a holding penalty would back the Griffons up, making it 1st and 14, which was easily converted thanks to a 56 yard pass from Edden to Bennett, putting Missouri Western at the Northwest 13 yard line to start the second quarter.&nbsp;

In plus territory Missouri Western would score quickly to start the second quarter, Reagan Jones subbing in at quarterback and rushing in from one yard out, Watson converting the extra point to put the Griffons up 10-3.

From there though, it was all Northwest for the remainder of the first half, the Bearcats scoring 21 unanswered points.&nbsp; The first touchdown for Northwest would come on the drive following Jones score, Hohensee finding Tank Young for a 40 yard receiving touchdown.&nbsp; After a three and out by Western, it was Hohensee again this time finding Trevon Alexander for a 29 yard score, pushing the Bearcat lead to 17-10.

The long ball was again what victimized Missouri Western on the final score of the half.&nbsp; Following a Griffon punt from their own 18 yard line, Hohensee would need just one play to complete a 49 yard touchdown pass to Kashan Griffin, Guastella's extra point pushing the lead to 24-10 which is where it would sit at halftime.&nbsp;

Missouri Western did get the ball back to start the second half, but it was not the offense that scored, rather it was the defense.&nbsp; Following an offensive drive that ended with another Evan Williams punt, the Bearcats would begin driving down the field and getting all the way to the Missouri Western 12 yard line, where Hohensee would throw an interception that Western's Desmond Green would take 90 yards downfield, narrowing the gap and making the score 24-17 after Watson's extra point.&nbsp;

Northwest would extend the lead again though late in the third quarter using a 10 play drive to get back into the redzone at the Missouri Western 20 yard line, but after a quarterback hurry on Hohensee by Brandon Johnson, which resulted in an incomplete pass to Alexander, Guastella would knock through a 37 yard field goal to push the lead to 27-17 heading into the final quarter. 8

The score would hold there until midway through the fourth quarter, Missouri Western getting the ball back after forcing a three and out on Northwest, and the Griffons would go 60 yards on 11 plays, the drive ending with Edden finding Traveon James for a 13 yard touchdown pass.&nbsp; However, Watson would miss the extra point putting the Griffons down 27-23 with 7:40 left in the game.&nbsp;

The Griffon defense would hold strong though, forcing yet another punt with 3:26 left in the game and getting the ball back.&nbsp; Unfortunately, that drive would fall short as on fourth and four, Edden would complete a pass that fell just a yard short to Chris Floyd Jr, giving Northwest the ball back with 1:57 left in regulation.&nbsp;

Hope was not lost for Missouri Western though as the Bearcats attempted to run the clock out.&nbsp; The ball was given to Harris on first and second down, with rushes of seven and one yard respectively, but on third down as the ball was handed to Harris, who did pick up a first down rushing for seven yards, but the tides turned in favor of Missouri Western as Dakari Streeter would strip the ball from Harris, giving the Griffons one last chance with 1:39 left in the game.&nbsp;

The Griffons though were unable to answer after the fumble.&nbsp; The drive started with a nine yard reception by Bennett from Edden, but on the very next play Northwest's Shane Fredrickson would pick off Edden with 1:26 left, Hohensee would then kneel out the remainder of the clock ending the game.&nbsp;

For Missouri Western Edden threw for an even 300 yard going 25-40 through the air, throwing one touchdown and one interception.&nbsp; Bennett was the leading receiver with eight catches for 126 yards, while Cromwell rushed five times for 12 yards to be the leading rusher.&nbsp;

The Bearcats were led by Hohensee who was 20-30 on the day throwing for 310 yards and three touchdowns as well as one interception. Young had five catches for 126 yards while Griffin had five catches for 82 yards, both scoring a touchdown.&nbsp; Once again Harris rushed for over 100 yards, rushing 22 times for 1o5 yards.

Missouri Western falls to 5-2 (4-2 MIAA) on the year.&nbsp; Next up for them they will travel to Kearney, Nebraska to take on Nebraska Kearney.&nbsp; Kickoff is at noon on Saturday and pregame coverage will begin at 11am on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

Northwest is now above .500, improving to 4-3 (3-3 MIAA).&nbsp; They will return to Maryville on Saturday for Homecoming, welcoming in Pittsburgh State.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 2pm.

After receiving the ball in the opening kickoff in the First Half Maryville quickly took a 6-0 lead over Savannah on a 2-yard rushing touchdown from Derek Quinlin for his first score of the night. Savannah on their opening drive was not able to get anything going after an early false start call that forced Savannah to punt the ball away. Maryville then expanded on their lead with another Quinlin rushing touchdown from the 1-yard line to take a 12-0 lead over Savannah to end the first quarter.

To start the second quarter Quinlin from Maryville was able to connect with both Wyatt Garner and Don Allen for big receiving touchdowns to lead 25-0 at halftime over Savannah. Savannah with multiple drives in the first half was not a able to string together a complete drive to get any momentum going before the end of the half.

Coming out of halftime Savannah had some life in them to start the third quarter with an Aiden Knechtenhofer 40-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Calloway to make it 25-7. Knechtenhofer also ended the night with an 80-yard rushing touchdown of his own with 1:40 to go in the third quarter to make it a 32-13 game with Maryville still leading.

Maryville able to hold off the power run game from Savannah to improve to 7-1 while Savannah falls to 6-2 on the year with the 39-20 loss Friday night to Maryville.

Next week Savannah will take on St. Pius X while Maryville will be taking on St. Joseph Lafayette next Friday night.

Maryville to not be denied carries the Highway 71 Sign away in a victory over Savannah 39-20 Friday night.

The annual Highway 71 showdown between Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State on the gridiron comes up on Saturday at Spratt Stadium at 1 p.m.

While Northwest has had the upper hand in this series for the last decade, the aura surrounding this year’s matchup feels a bit different.

The Griffons, ranked No. 21 in the media poll, winners of five straight, sitting at 5-1 on the season, come in as the favorites on paper for the first time in years.

Under first-year head coach Tyler Fenwick, Missouri Western has been on a recent tear, most recently winning at Washburn in dominant fashion Saturday, 61-21.

As great as the season has been so far, Fenwick knows beating the team in green is always a formidable challenge.

"There's going to be somewhere around 75 plays we're going to run on offense and (Northwest) is going to run the same," Fenwick said Monday on the Hey Coach! Show on the MIAA Network.

"Whoever makes the fewest mistakes throughout the game is going to win the game. We have to make sure we're prepared enough that we make fewer mistakes than they do."

Northwest stumbled out of the gate this year, starting the season 1-2 for the first time since 2003.

Their starting quarterback, Mike Hohensee, went down with injury in week two against Emporia State - a night where the Bearcats threw six total picks and lost to the Hornets 33-13 in Bearcat Stadium.

But, Hohensee’s back under center and the Bearcats have righted the ship for the most part, beating Central Oklahoma in Maryville last week 34-21, improving Northwest’s record to 3-3.

Head coach Rich Wright is proud of the resiliency his team has shown so far this year.

"I've been really proud of this group," Wright told KFEQ Radio. "The one thing we never lost is our energy and care for one another. We didn't waiver when things got hard. We tell our kids all the time - that's indicative of life. There's going to be times when you get knocked down. What defines character is your ability and will to get back up."

The Bearcats will have their hands full on Saturday. Missouri Western is the top scoring and rushing offense in the MIAA. They lead the league in sacks and blocked kicks as well.

 Wright describes the Griffons as balanced.

"Really multiple with what they do," Wright said. "They have some ball hawks on the (defensive) back end. On special teams, they've created some big plays. Whether it was a blocked field goal against Central Missouri. A blocked punt against Washburn last week. Just different plays they've made throughout the season. It's a well balanced football team and we're going to have to play very well to come out with a win."

On the flipside, Northwest is stout defensively. The Bearcats are second in the league in sacks, they’re first in the league and ninth in the country in stopping the run. They’ve also forced 12 turnovers.

Fenwick says their offense can’t be overlooked, either.

"The MIAA is good," Fenwick said. "When (Hohensee) is in there, they seem to move it a little better. Seems to be more controlled. Defensively, they're big, physical and fast. They've been running the same defense for years and years and they all know it."

It’s been 11 years since Missouri Western has beaten Northwest. The Bearcats have won the last nine meetings.

The last time Missouri Western won, it was November 2012. Bearcat Stadium. 11th-ranked Western. Fourth-ranked Northwest. Griffons come back from a 17-point deficit to stun Northwest 21-20 and win the MIAA outright.

Missouri Western’s offensive coordinator that day was none other than Tyler Fenwick.

Fenwick is back in the black and gold, having picked up a decade of head coaching experience since leaving Missouri Western after the 2012 season.

He knows it’s been awhile. He knows it’s a rivalry. He knows the spotlight is on Missouri Western in a way that it just hasn’t been for at least a little while.

But in the mind of Fenwick, in the mind of the Griffons, this is just another game.

"At the end of the day, at 1 o'clock on Saturday, it's game time. It's a 120-yard field. You have 11 guys on each side of the ball, and you go play."

No. 21 MWSU ready to host Bearcats Saturday, Griffons treating it as any other game

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Patrick Mahomes knows the Kansas City Chiefs' offense is still trying to put everything together.

 </figure>St. Joseph PostKANSAS CITY (AP) — Patrick Mahomes knows the Kansas City Chiefs' offense is still trying to put everything together.It was evident in the way they struggled against Denver on third down Thursday night. The way they kept getting bottled up in short-yardage situations. And in how they failed time after time to turn red-zone trips into touchdowns.“Luckily for us,” Mahomes said, “our defense is playing great."So great that Mahomes' lone touchdown pass and Harrison Butker's four field goals were enough to squeak out a 19-8 victory over the Broncos, whose own woeful offense could only manage 197 yards behind a shaky performance from Russell Wilson.“We have guys that are starters on other teams that are trying to find a way on the football field, and when they get on the field, they're making plays,” Mahomes said of the Kansas City defense. “And they're playing with confidence.”Mahomes finished with 306 yards passing and an interception, and a big chunk of his production went to Travis Kelce, who had nine catches for 124 yards with&nbsp;Taylor Swift again cheering him on&nbsp;from an Arrowhead Stadium suite.Still, the inability of the Chiefs (5-1) to score touchdowns rather than field goals nearly proved costly.Butker's first three field goals helped them to a 16-0 lead, but Wilson's touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton — ruled incomplete but overturned upon review — with about six minutes remaining kept the Broncos (1-5) alive. And when Javonte Williams bulled into the end zone for the 2-point conversion, what had been a one-sided shutout was a one-possession game.The Broncos' league-worst defense couldn't make a stop, though. Mahomes converted third-and-2 with a 28-yard pass to Rashee Rice, and that put Butker in position for a 52-yard field goal with 1:55 left that put the game away.“Our defense was incredible tonight, as it has been,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But we have to take care of business in the red zone. We had a lot of yards, positive yards, but you can't stall down there."The Broncos have not beaten the Chiefs since Sept. 17, 2015, the year Peyton Manning led Denver to the Super Bowl. That was six head and interim coaches ago, and nothing changed with Sean Payton leading them Thursday night. In a league built for parity, their losing streak is the fourth-longest for any team against another in NFL history.“I'm disappointed but I'm not discouraged,” Payton said. “Offensively we struggled throwing the ball. Our third-down numbers were poor. The turnovers, against a team like this, it's going to be tough to win the game, and yet we were still in it going into the fourth quarter. Sometimes you don't know how a game is going to unfold.”As bad as the Broncos' defense has been this season, it was Wilson and their offense that kept dragging them down. He had 37 yards passing in the first half, and the only drive Wilson led past midfield ended on fourth down.The Chiefs weren't doing a whole lot better.Their first three forays into the red zone netted three points, thanks to an interception by Justin Simmons and a failed tush push out of a field-goal lineup on fourth down. Mahomes, who has struggled by his standards all season, only found his rhythm once in the first half, when he ended a 62-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Kadarius Toney.Butker made it 13-0 at the break when he drilled a 60-yard field goal as time expired.The Chiefs' red-zone woes continued in the second half. They began by swiftly marching downfield and setting up first-and-goal at the Denver 8, but that soon turned into fourth-and-goal at the 7-yard line and Butker had to kick another field goal.That was all Kansas City could muster until his clinching kick in the final minutes.Thanks to the defense, that was all the Chiefs needed.“I thought we did a lot of good things, just obviously red zone and some third downs we didn't execute at a high enough level,” Mahomes said. “I still think there were a lot of good things we can take from it.”The Chiefs stay home to host the L.A. Chargers on Sunday, October 22 at 3:25 p.m. The game will be on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) and Q Country 92.7 in St. Joseph.<figure>
