The St. Joseph Mustangs got down 6-2 in the seventh inning, rallied, but still came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Carroll Merchants at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph Thursday.

Carroll (7-9) had beaten the Mustangs 9-6 on Wednesday night in Carroll, Iowa as well.

St. Joseph scored three runs in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game, but then stranded a runner at first to end the game in the ninth.

The Mustangs had a tough night in the field Thursday, committing five total errors. The Merchants also outhit the Mustangs 12-8.

Jackson Glueck went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kyle Hepburn hit a single-shot home run in the second.

Starting pitcher Roy Holcomb took the loss for St. Joseph. He tossed five innings, surrendering eight hits and three earned runs. He walked four and struck out one. He also hit a batter.

St. Joseph (12-2) stays home to face the Nevada Griffons on Friday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Mustangs drop second straight to Carroll Merchants Thursday

The Kansas City Royals snapped a four game losing streak in walk off fashion on Thursday afternoon, defeating the New York Yankees 4-3 at Kauffman Stadium.&nbsp;

Royals starting pitcher Alec Marsh and Yankees starter Nestor Cortes exchanged scoreless frames for the first three innings before the Royals would break into the run column in the fourth inning.&nbsp;

Following a walk by third baseman Maikel Garcia, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr would extend his career best hit streak to 14 games with a single which would promptly be followed up with first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino finding a gap in center field for a two RBI double, putting the Royals up 2-0.&nbsp;

Marsh spun a gem in the series finale, giving up just one hit through seven scoreless innings, striking out seven batters and walking two, before handing it off to the bullpen.&nbsp;

However that is where things would go awry for the Royals.&nbsp; Reliever John Schreiber would come on to face Anthony Rizzo to open the eighth, and after one pitch would give up a home run to draw the Yankees closer.&nbsp;

After recording the first out, a fielding error by second baseman Garrett Hampson would put Austin Wells on first, who would then get pinch ran for by Jahmai Jones.&nbsp; Jones would score two batters later, Anthony Volpe grounding into a fielders choice to knot the game at two runs apiece.&nbsp;

Angel Zerpa would allow the third run to score, although it was charged to Schreiber, as Trent Grisham would score on a single from Juan Soto, giving the Yankees their first lead of the day 3-2.&nbsp;

It looked like the Royals losing streak was going to move to five games, with two outs and Drew Waters standing on first Kyle Isbel stepped into the box.&nbsp; Isbel would work the count full before hitting a single, allowing Waters to advance to third and bringing Garcia to the plate.&nbsp;

With runners on the corners, Garcia watched the first two pitches and got up 2-0, before depositing a hit down the left field line and into the corner, bringing across Waters and Isbel for the walk off victory.&nbsp;

Manager Matt Quatraro, who was ejected in the sixth inning, expressed in his postgame press conference how proud he was of his team for battling back.&nbsp;

"I couldn't be more proud of those guys, I mean you're down, that's a really good team with an elite closer coming in, we've talked so much about it but I never get tired of bragging about them," Quatraro said. 

"The way they go about it, the way they hustle, the way they never quit, I mean I've talked about it, it's inspiring to me to come to work everyday to be around these guys."

The Royals will now hop on a plane and head to Los Angeles and Dodger stadium for a three game weekend series with the Dodgers, the start of a nine game road trip.&nbsp; &nbsp;Cole Ragans will open the series for Kansas City against Gavin Stone for the Dodgers.&nbsp; First pitch is at 9:10 pm with pregame at 8:30pm on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

Royals score 4-3 walk off win to snap four game losing streak

The St. Joseph Mustangs (12-1) took their first loss of the 2024 season Wednesday night with a 9-6 setback against the Carroll Merchants at Merchants Park in Carroll, Iowa.

St. Joseph scored six runs through the first three innings, but were held off the board for the rest of the game. Carroll broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the sixth. The Merchants added one more in the eighth.

The Merchants' pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts Wednesday. St. Joseph pitcher and East Buchanan alum Broncho Whitt took the loss, despite some solid stuff in middle relief.

Whitt struck out five and walked three in 3.2 innings. He allowed two hits and two earned runs, including a two-run homer in the sixth.

Bishop LeBlond alum Frank Gall was one of four Mustangs to have a pair of hits Wednesday. Gall scored a run in the loss, while also driving in a run.

St. Joseph is back home to open a three-game homestand Thursday. The Mustangs will try and get one back on the Merchants on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Phil Welch Stadium. Gates open at 5:30.

St. Joseph Mustangs take first loss of the season at Carroll Wednesday

Missouri Western athletics announced the hiring of Nicole Thompson as the seventh head softball coach in program history Wednesday.

This concludes about a month-long search after the dismissal of <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/69d9afba-c68c-4cd0-a9f5-d15d2d5942eb">former head coach Joe Yegge</a> in May.

"We are excited to welcome Nicole and her family to the Griffon family," MWSU athletic director Andy Carter said. "She is a proven head coach, a proven culture-builder and a proven winner in all aspects on and off the field."

"I am confident that she will be able to continue the success from the foundation that is already in place and re-establish our program amongst the MIAA's elite."

Thompson comes to Missouri Western from NCAA Division II Regis University in Colorado, and is fresh off a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament championship and an NCAA South Central Regional appearance this past season.

In her five seasons at Regis, Thompson compiled a 132-101 record, leading the Rangers to 33 wins or more in each of the last three seasons. Her 2024 squad won an RMAC Tournament title as a five-seed and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament bid since 2015.

The Rangers then defeated No. 1 nationally ranked West Texas A&amp;M in the tournament's opening round.

"I am extremely excited and grateful to be joining Griffon Nation," Thompson said in a statement. "I want to thank Andy Carter and the entire MWSU athletic department for giving me this opportunity to lead a such a tradition-rich program.

"From the minute I got on campus and met with administration, it was clear that we shared the same collective passion and drive. I am ready to get to St. Joseph and get to work."

Prior to Regis, Thompson spent three seasons&nbsp;as the&nbsp;head softball coach at&nbsp;NAIA Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, where she compiled an 82-70 record, including a remarkable 50-20 mark in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. She earned&nbsp;AAC Coach of the Year honors in 2017.

Thompson had a unique start to her coaching career. Originally accepting a position as the Assistant Director for Communications at Union College in February 2016, Thompson served as the Interim Head Softball Coach, starting in September 2016 before being named the full-time head coach.

In May 2016, Thompson completed her Master's Degree in Athletics Administration as a Graduate Assistant for Sports Information at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

Thompson was a dual-sport athlete in college, playing both softball and basketball for Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. As a softball player, she was a three-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) First Team selection at shortstop.

Her team won two KCAC regular season championships, and one KCAC Tournament title, making two NAIA National Tournament appearances (2012, 2013).

Thompson ended her collegiate career with a .362 average, .394 slugging percentage, 203 hits, and 61 RBIs. She ranks second in Bethany history with 87 career stolen bases and fourth all-time in runs scored with 128.

Thompson is married to JT Thompson and&nbsp;has&nbsp;a daughter named Kramer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

New York would extend their lead again in the top of the seventh scoring three more runs.&nbsp; The Royals would go on to score their final three runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning.&nbsp;

Royals losing streak moves to four games, fall to Yankees 11-5

The St. Joseph Mustangs are now 12-0 on the season following a 3-0 win over the Jefferson City Renegades at Vivion Field in Jefferson City Tuesday.

Three Mustangs pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and held the Renegades to just four hits.

St. Joseph scored all three of the game's runs in the top of the ninth inning. Trevor McCollum had a two-run RBI double in that frame. McCollum later scored on a wild pitch.

Bishop LeBlond alum Jaren Guck got the win, tossing a scoreless ninth inning and striking out two. Starting pitcher Aron Harrington went 4.1 innings, striking out four and walking three.

Jase Johnson tossed 3.2 innings of hitless middle relief, striking out four and walking none.

The Mustangs stay on the road to face the Carroll Merchants Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Mustangs remain undefeated with shutout win at Jefferson City

The Kansas City Royals struggled to produce offense and gave up 10 unanswered runs to the New York Yankees before scoring, on way to a 10-1 blowout loss at Kauffman Stadium.&nbsp;

The Yankees scored two runs in the first inning before adding four more in the fourth. After a scoreless fifth inning, New York would score one in the sixth, and have another big inning in the seventh, pushing across three runs.&nbsp;

The Royals lone run came in the eighth inning as manager Matt Quatraro would pinch hit catcher Freddy Fermin for Salvador Perez.&nbsp; Fermin in his lone at bat would hit a 370 ft home run to left field.&nbsp;

Royals starter Brady Singer gave up seven runs, just six earned, through 5.2 innings.&nbsp; Reliever Nick Anderson gave up the final three runs of the game.&nbsp; Infielder Nick Pratto, who was called up on Tuesday, made his season debut on the mound in the ninth, giving up one hit and also striking out one in a scoreless appearance.&nbsp;

The Royals will look to snap a three game losing streak on Wednesday, hoping to salvage a series split in the four game series.&nbsp; The Royals starter has not been announced yet while the Yankees will send Cody Poteet to the mound.&nbsp;

First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:10pm with pregame set for 6:30 on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

The Royals called up outfielder Drew Waters and infielder Nick Pratto from Omaha.&nbsp; In corresponding moves infielder Adam Frazier was placed on the bereavement list while outfielder Hunter Renfroe went to the 10 day IL with a fractured toe suffered in Monday's loss.&nbsp;

Waters, who made his season debut in right field Tuesday, was batting .277 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs for the Stormchasers this season.&nbsp; Pratto was batting .234 with seven home runs, 30 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.

Gabe Fields had many lucrative options on where to get his college education, and where to play football, at the next level.

The soon-to-be senior and running back from St. Joseph Central had 18 Division I offers in all - three from schools in power five conferences.

In the end, Fields chose Vanderbilt University in the SEC.

"This whole football thing is to set you up for your future," Fields told KFEQ Radio. "Whether it's NFL or getting a good scholarship so you don't have to pay no money. So, I mean, that's the whole point of me trying to chase the pathways, and I think I made a good decision choosing Vanderbilt."

Fields, a 4.0 GPA student, will study business management at Vanderbilt - a school that has a 6.7% acceptance rate. He was first offered by the Commodores on February 1. Fields visited on May 31 and announced his commitment June 7, ending what was about a two-year recruiting process.

For Fields, it all began with an unofficial visit to Iowa State - the first of about 14 visits in all.

"I went up to (Kansas) twice, Iowa State five times, Mizzou 2-3 times, Vanderbilt once," Fields said, recalling all of the stops he's made.

Fields enjoyed getting to travel the country, visiting various campuses. He admits these decisions for young athletes can be difficult. Fields’ biggest piece of advice to any athlete being recruited - stay focused on the things that matter.

"Don't chase the money, don't chase the fame, don't chase anything that won't make you a better person," Fields said. "At the end of the day, you have to put the work in and grind, even when people aren't looking. You have to do things other people won't and lead by example. Be the best version of yourself each and every day."

"Got to stay away from drugs and all of that stuff, because that's just throwing you off the course. You have to find the right group of people to push you."

Fields’ talent has been evident throughout his varsity career. The three-star prospect rushed for 1,396 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior in 2023, while catching 16 passes for 292 yards and two scores last season as well.

As a sophomore, Fields rushed for over 1,200 yards and 17 scores. He's is also a standout in basketball, earning first-team all-Greater KC Suburban Conference honors this past season. Fields holds a 4.53-second 40-yard dash time and a 11.57-second 100-meter dash time as a sophomore.

Central just had its first winning season season in football in a decade with a 7-3 campaign last fall - the most wins in a regular season for the Indians since 1989.

 Coach Sheldon Ferrell takes the reigns as head coach this year following the departure of Regi Trotter.

Fields says he and coach Ferrell have always worked well together. Ferrell was the Indians' offensive coordinator for each of the past five seasons.

"My sophomore year, our connection grew through football and just working out," Fields said of Ferrell. "He sees what I do, so I think, over time, just getting experience and building the bond further and further each and every year."

With his college decision already made, Fields hopes to make the most of one last season in an Indians uniform.

"It definitely takes a lot of stress off," Fields admitted. "You get to have fun. You don't have to worry about, 'Where I am going to go? Is this offer going to get pulled? Am I going to get this offer?'"

"You can just have fun with everything and enjoy the moment. You can just go play football now. Get strong, faster and hope for the best."

Central's Gabe Fields ready to enjoy senior year with commitment to Vanderbilt made

The St. Joseph Mustangs (11-0) breezed their way through a three-game homestand and topped off a spotless weekend with a 12-5 win at Chillicothe Sunday night.

The Mustangs tallied 14 hits on the Mudcats Sunday, including a home run from Darius Freeman.

St. Joseph Christian graduate Camden Lutz started Sunday's game, striking out six and walking only one through five innings. He allowed six hits and three earned runs.

East Buchanan alum Broncho Whitt tossed a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two.

The Mustangs also beat Chillicothe 7-6 on Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium in come-from-behind fashion.

St. Joseph trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, but scored four runs in the final frame, including a walkoff sac fly by Logan Miller, which scored Trevor McCollum.

Bishop LeBlond alum Jaren Guck was the winning pitcher on Saturday, tossing a scoreless ninth inning with two punchouts.

St. Joseph had no trouble on Friday, blowing out MINK League newcomer Warren County, 15-1 in seven innings. The Mustangs benefitted from five Warren County errors.

The Mustangs' pitching staff also combined for 12 strikeouts, including seven from starting pitcher and Mid-Buchanan product Denton Biller.

St. Joseph, now 11-0 on the season, is off Monday before a road game at Jefferson City Tuesday. That game will start at 7 p.m.

Mustangs remain undefeated with perfect weekend

The Kansas City Royals offense exploded on Saturday, defeating the Seattle Mariners 8-4 to clinch the three games series win and their third win in a row. 

Following a leadoff home run in the top of the first by Seattle shortstop J.P. Crawford, the Royals would answer to tie the game up as third baseman Miakel Garcia scored on an RBI single from catcher Salvador Perez. 

Kansas City would take the lead an inning later when Adam Frazier, playing right field in this game, would blast a 364 foot home run to right field, giving the Royals a 2-1 lead. 

After two scoreless innings, the Mariners would score two runs in the top of the fifth, a home run coming from Mitch Garver and an RBI single from Crawford, but in the bottom half the Royals would again rally back to take the lead.

An RBI single from second baseman Nick Loftin would tie the game back up, before a two out RBI double from first baseman Vinne Pasquantino would score Loftin and Garcia to give Kansas City the lead.  

The Mariners drew one run closer in the sixth, a sacrifice fly from left fielder Dylan Moore scoring fellow outfielder Julio Rodriguez.  But the Royals would again extend the lead in the inning, a Kyle Isbel double scoring Loftin and Nelson Velázquez

A sacrifice fly from Isbel in the eighth scoring Dairon Blanco would mark the final run of the game. 

Starting pitcher Alec Marsh earned the win, despite giving up all four runs, striking out eight batters. Isbel drove in three runs on the day while Frazier was 2 for 2 with the home run.

Kansas City will now look for a series sweep of Seattle during Sunday's series finale.  Cole Ragans is set to start for the Royals against Seattle's George Kirby.  First pitch at 1:10, pregame at 12:30 on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

Royals offense explodes for third straight win defeating Seattle 8-4

Brice Garnett has been a pro golfer for 18 years.

He’s played overseas. He’s been on the PGA Tour. He currently holds PGA status, in fact, having won the Puerto Rico Open this past March, and will hold that status for at least the next three years.

Through it all, the Gallatin native still carries the Missouri Western logo on his golf bag. The former Griffon will never forget where he came from.

"I've always tried to keep some sort of a chip on my shoulder," Garnett told KFEQ Radio. "I've always remained humble and remembered my roots, but have tried to keep a chip on my shoulder, dating back to my college time whenever the University of Missouri didn't want me."

"I ended up at Missouri Western and had an amazing career."

The best golfer to ever play at Missouri Western can now add another Hall of Fame status to his name.

Garnett was one of 10 individuals unveiled in <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/1e5bd6e6-b2b7-4c36-821d-76d48f23c880">this year's St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class</a>.

Already a member of the Missouri Western and MIAA Hall of Fame, Garnett says getting this honor from the St. Joseph Sports Commission is extra special, having grown up and started his career in the area.

"Especially being from Gallatin and playing there at Missouri Western in St. Joe, it was just an exciting call to get," Garnett shared. "I've known Brett (Esely) a long time. He was actually our compliance coordinator when I was at school. We've stayed in touch."

"I know he's doing big things with the Sports Commission. We're excited for August to come around to get up there and get inducted."

Brett Esely is the director of the St. Joseph Sports Commission, which oversees the Hall of Fame. Each year's class is selected by an anonymous three-person committee.

Garnett was a three-time all-American at Missouri Western and just secured PGA Tour status for the next three years this past March with his Puerto Rico Open victory - his first PGA win since 2018 and his second overall.

Garnett has seven professional victories, but he says that win in March, at age 40, was a long time coming and the culmination of long stretches of hard work and waiting for a win.

"It was probably the most challenging part of my career," he said. "I felt like I got to a spot where I could compete weekly. Everything in my game was probably as strong as it's ever been. To see it all come together down in Puerto Rico at 40 years old, kind of resurrecting my career."

Garnett is gearing up for a busy summer and fall ahead. He has a three-week break right now, but he says he's looking at playing in the John Deere Classic on July 4th weekend in Silvis, Illinois.

"I believe I'll travel from there to the Scottish Open," he said. "That'll be my first time playing in Scotland, which I'm excited about. Come back and play a few events in the end of July, getting ready to hopefully sneak in that top 70 (FedEx Cup standings) to get in that first playoff event in Memphis, which is a huge, huge step."

Garnett aims to get in the top 70 in the Fedex Cup standings, which would qualify him for the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis on August 15 - the first of three Fedex Cup playoff tournaments. He’s currently ranked 75th in those standings.

Garnett will be enshrined August 25 in the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame. He'd love to be there for the ceremony at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center, but he’d also love to be competing for a Fedex Cup championship during that time as well.

"I hope to be at the BMW (Championship) for my career, but definitely will be in St. Joe if not."

Brice Garnett hasn't forgotten his NWMO roots despite PGA success

CLEVELAND- The Kansas City Royals bounced back from a series opening loss to the Cleveland Guardians, winning 4-3 in Thursday's series finale before traveling back to Kansas City.  

The Royals took an early lead in the first when first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino doubled to drive in Maikel Garcia who led the game off reaching first on an error by Guardians second baseman Andres Gimenez.  

Cleveland would tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning before taking the lead in the bottom of the third, then adding another run in the fourth inning to lead Kansas City 3-1.  

Royals starting pitcher Brady Singer struggled in his start, pitching just 3.2 innings before being pulled, giving up nine hits and the three runs, two earned, striking out just two batters.  Will Smith would get the final out of the fourth inning.  

Kansas City would tie the game up in the top of the sixth inning. With catcher Freddy Fermin and left fielder MJ Melendez on base, right fielder Hunter Renfroe would double down the left field line, scoring Fermin.  

After an Adam Frazier ground out, Kyle Isbel would come to the plate, grounding into a fielder's choice with Melendez being thrown out at home.  Though initially Melendez was called out at home, a challenge by manager Matt Quatraro got the call overturned, and the Royals tied the game 3-3.  Garcia ground into a double play to end the inning.  

With two outs in the top of the eighth the Royals would rally to take the lead, a double by Frazier would be followed up by another single from Isbel, bringing Frazier around to score and give the Royals their 4-3 lead.  

The Royals bullpen combined for 5.1 scoreless innings of relief between Smith, Angel Zerpa, Sam Long who earned the win, John Schreiber, and James McArthur who notched his 12th save of the season.  

Kansas City is now 37-26 on the season and will return to Kanss City for a three game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners.  Daniel Lynch is slated to start the series opener for the Royals against Seattle's Bryce Miller.  First pitch is at 7:10pm with pregame at 6:30 on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

Royals starting pitcher Brady Singer struggled in his start, pitching just 3.2 innings before being pulled, giving up nine hits and the three runs, two earned, striking out just two batters. Will Smith would get the final out of the fourth inning. Kansas City would tie the game up in the top of the sixth inning. With catcher Freddy Fermin and left fielder MJ Melendez on base, right fielder Hunter Renfroe would double down the left field line, scoring Fermin. After an Adam Frazier ground out, Kyle Isbel would come to the plate, grounding into a fielder's choice with Melendez being thrown out at home. Though initially Melendez was called out at home, a challenge by manager Matt Quatraro got the call overturned, and the Royals tied the game 3-3. Garcia ground into a double play to end the inning. With two outs in the top of the eighth the Royals would rally to take the lead, a double by Frazier would be followed up by another single from Isbel, bringing Frazier around to score and give the Royals their 4-3 lead. The Royals bullpen combined for 5.1 scoreless innings of relief between Smith, Angel Zerpa, Sam Long who earned the win, John Schreiber, and James McArthur who notched his 12th save of the season. Kansas City is now 37-26 on the season and will return to Kanss City for a three game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners. Daniel Lynch is slated to start the series opener for the Royals against Seattle's Bryce Miller. First pitch is at 7:10pm with pregame at 6:30 on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

The St. Joseph Mustangs are flat out dominating early on in the 2024 season.

The Mustangs (7-0) rolled to a 17-1 win at Clarinda Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium.

The Mustangs scored five runs in the sixth and poured on seven in the eighth. Dom Felix went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

 Mason Holton drove in four runs. Carson Schrack and Bishop LeBlond alum Frank Gall drove in three.

St. Joseph Central product Roy Holcomb got the start and the win on the mound, striking out six over six innings, allowing just five hits and no earned runs.

St. Joseph is now 7-0 on the season and they come home tonight to face the Carroll Merchants. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 at Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs win again, staying unbeaten with blowout victory at Clarinda

The St. Joseph Mustangs remain unbeaten, as they topped the Clarinda As 7-3 in seven innings at Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday.

The game was called in seven innings due to lightning.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Benton grad Carson Schmidt had another strong night at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

On the mound, starting pitcher Landon Reith struck out seven over six innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and six walks.

The Mustangs are now 6-0 on the season - the best record of any team in the MINK League.

The Mustangs are on the road tonight to face Clarinda. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The St. Joseph Mustangs are now 5-0 on the season after an 11-1 drubbing of the Chillicothe Mudcats at Shaffer Park in Chillicothe Monday night.

The Mustangs outhit the Mudcats 10-2. Recent Benton grad Carson Schmidt was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Savannah native Truman Bodenhausen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. LeBlond grad Frank Gall was 2-for-4 and scored three runs as well.

On the mound, starting pitcher Aron Harrington got the win in four innings, striking out four and walking none. He allowed just two hits and one earned run.

East Buchanan grad Broncho Witt struck out six over three scoreless innings of middle relief, and St. Joseph Christian product Camden Lutz tossed a scoreless ninth.

The Mustangs are back home to face Clarinda Tuesday night at 7:05 central. It’s Baseball and Babies Night at Phil Welch Stadium. Gates open at 5:30.

Mustangs stay undefeated with blowout win over Chillicothe



Northwest Missouri State has announced the hiring of Tony Jandron as the new head coach of the Bearcats.

"I'm thrilled to get Coach Jandron to campus and turn the keys to the baseball program over to him," Northwest A.D. Andy Peterson said. "We had a ton of interest and qualified coaches reached out about running our team, and Tony quickly separated himself as a top candidate."

"As an assistant, he has been a part of successful teams at every stop in his career and I'm excited to see what he can do as a head coach in building off the foundation here at Northwest Missouri State. We're excited to get Tony and his wife, Gabby, to town and start the next chapter of Bearcat baseball."

Jandron becomes the 10th head coach in school history. This is the first head coaching job for Jandron after he previously served as an assistant coach at Illinois State, Central Michigan, Northwood and the College of DuPage.

Jandron succeeds Darin Loe, who retired at the end of this season after 24 years at the helm. Loe went 592-650 in that time with Northwest.

"I'm thankful to Andy for this opportunity," Jandron said. "I was impressed by the vision of the program and enjoyed getting to know more about the Bearcat culture. There is a commitment to the student-athlete experience and I'm excited to meet the standard of success both on and off the field."

"I'm looking forward to building relationships, sharing my experiences, and motivating players to become the best version of themselves. My wife Gabby and I are beyond excited to be in Maryville and join the Bearcat family."

At Illinois State this past season, Jandron served as the third base coach and ran the offense for the Redbirds. Illinois State gained its first winning season since 2019 when it posted a mark of 30-27 and went 16-11 in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2024

.Prior to Illinois State, Jandron spent five seasons (2019-2023) as an assistant at Central Michigan and amassed a 177-80 (.689) record as a Chippewa.&nbsp;In Jandron's time at Central Michigan, the Chippewas earned their first NCAA berth since 1995, tied the program record for victories in a season (47), and broke the programs stolen base record in a season (133).

Jandron coached three seasons (2016-2018) at NCAA Division II&nbsp;Northwood. The Timberwolves won their first GLIAC title in their program's history and had a combined two-year total of 84 victories (2017, 2018). Both squads were ranked in the top 20 nationally and appeared in the NCAA Regionals.

Jandron began his coaching career at College of DuPage - a junior college in Glen Ellyn, Ill. He is a 2011 graduate of St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis., with a degree in business administration.

Jandron was a two-sport athlete in college as he competed in baseball and basketball. The former All-American at St. Norbert College (De Pere, Wis.) led the NCAA in batting average .511 his senior campaign and is the program's&nbsp;all-time wins leader on the mound.

Jandron was also a member of the 2010 St. Joseph Mustangs team. He's a native of Negaunee, Michigan.

Northwest taps Tony Jandron as next head baseball coach

It took extra innings, but the St. Joseph Mustangs continued their undefeated start to the season, defeating the Carroll Merchants 7-4 in 11 innings in Carroll, Iowa on Sunday afternoon. 

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Lafayette alum Ike Book singled to score shortstop Carson Schrack, who had doubled in the previous at bat. 

The Merchants knotted the game up in the bottom of the third on a home run from first baseman Jordan Bradenburg. Carroll would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, a single from Aiden Cizek. Cizek would also score in the seventh on a wild pitch. 

Trailing 3-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Mustangs would tie the game up, a two run home run from catcher Dom Felix tying the game before Savannah alum Truman Bodenhausen would pop out to end the inning. 

After a scoreless tenth inning, the Mustangs would score four runs in the top of the eleventh, giving up just one run in the bottom half of the extra frame 

Book led the way hitting, going 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI. Jaren Guck would earn the win out of the bullpen, pitching a scoreless inning and striking out two.  Tim Teixeira earned his second save. 

The Mustangs are now 4-0 on the young season and will stay on the road Monday, traveling to Chillicothe for another matchup with the Mudcats.
