The Big 12 Conference announces that beginning Friday, March 13, it is suspending all regular-season competitions, on- and off-campus recruiting, and out-of-season practices until Sunday, March 29.

The suspension of these athletic-related activities does not include campus-based practices for in-season sports, strength and conditioning activities for all sports,  and does not apply to teams and individuals participating in NCAA Championship competition.

Earlier today the Conference announced the cancellation of Big 12 Championship events through April 15.

Big 12 Conference announces additional measures

The Missouri State High School Activities Association has changed the venue for Lafayette High School's Class 5 Boys Quarterfinal game Saturday against Raytown South.

The game will still be played at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, but it has been moved from Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence to Blue Spring South High School and only essential personnel will be allowed to attend.  Essential personnel includes 15 players with two adults, four coaches, two managers and two administrators.

Essential personnel must be at Blue Springs South no later than 6:40 p.m. and no one will be allowed to enter the gym prior to 6:45 p.m.  All personnel will be checked in by Lafayette administration and no one can be added to the list.  The doors will be locked at 7:00 p.m. and no admittance will take place after that time.

There will be no admission cost, no concessions, and if you leave the game you will not be allowed to re-enter.

The NCAA announced this afternoon the cancellation of all remaining winter and spring NCAA championship events.

The NCAA’s cancellation includes two events that Northwest Missouri State University was scheduled to compete in this weekend with the NCAA Division II Indoor Track &amp; Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Central Region Tournament slated for March 14, 15 and 17 in Maryville, Missouri.

NCAA cancels March Madness, all winter and spring championships

Columbia, Mo.- Upon the recommendation from the Green County Director of Public Health and in consultation with Missouri State University, the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) will be making adjustments to the access allowed at this weekend’s Show-Me Showdown.

With a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the state and concern for the safety of all who will be working and attending the Show-Me Showdown, each school will be given 150 wristbands to distribute to its fans base. Only fans that have been given a wristband will be allowed in the arena. The distribution of the wristbands will be the responsibility of the school. Only essential school personnel will be allowed access to the arena as well. Any tickets previously purchased are now void. The MSHSAA Office will work with the participating schools on any reimbursements that need to be made.

In addition to the limit on spectators, other elements involved with the Show-Me Showdown have been cancelled. All entertainment groups and recognitions have been cancelled. There  will also be no third-place games played, only the semifinals and championship games.

All games from this weekend will be streamed at www.MSHSAA.tv.

Working media members with previously approved credentials will have access to the games.

MSHSAA to limit spectators allowed at state basketball tournaments

Big 12 cancels remaining tournament games

The Central High School girls basketball team had its season come to an end Wednesday as they lost to Liberty 45-39 in the Class 5 Sectional at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence.

The Indians end their season 16-12, while Liberty stays undefeated at 27-0 and they'll play Blue Springs in the Class 5 Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Central jumped out to a quick 6-4 lead on Wednesday, but Libery ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 12-6 lead.  The Blue Jays extended their lead to nine points early in the second quarter before Central rallied and used a 12-4 run to end the half and they tied the game 25-25 at halftime.

Neither team could pull away in the second half as Liberty led 34-32 after three quarters, but the Indians went cold and struggled to score in the fourth.  With the game tied 35-35, the Blue Jays used a 6-0 run to take their biggest lead of the second half and Central never regained the lead.

Teegan Broaden and Lauren Eiman led the Indians with 10 points each, while Ella Moody added nine.

Then Emma Hoffart tied the game with an RBI-single. After her fourth hit of the game, a single in the eighth, Sydni Hawkins and Hoffart were in scoring position on a wild pitch for Hoelscher with one out. Hoelscher dropped a fly ball just inside the line in the left field corner to drive in the winning run.

The wackiness got started in the middle innings and continued. Illinois Springfield led 3-0 after two innings. MWSU got one in the bottom of the third and jumped ahead 4-3 on a three-run bomb by Hawkins in the fourth. Griffon softball rallies past Illinois Springfield 10-9 to win series

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana freshman Trayce Jackson-Davis had a double double of 11 points and career-high 17 rebounds to help lead the Hoosiers to a 89-64 romp over Nebraska in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Armaan Franklin led the Hoosiers with 13 points, Justin Smith and Devonte Green each scored 12 and Al Durham added 11.

The 11th-seeded Hoosiers (20-12) will now play sixth-seeded Penn State (21-10) Thursday night. Indiana split its two meetings with the Nittany Lions.

Kevin Cross was high for No. 14 seed Nebraska (7-25) with 23 points. Haanif Cheatham chipped in with 17 points and Jervay Green 15 points. Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg left the game early after feeling ill and reports say he was taken to a hospital to get checked.

The Big Ten is closing the rest of the tournament to fans over fears of exposure to the coronavirus.

The Hoosiers closed the first half with a 16-1 run to take a 43-34 lead into halftime. IU had scored 11 unanswered points to move in front 38-33 with 48 1:03 left.

Indiana scored the first four points of the second half to continue the run and expanded the lead to 58-38 with 15:48 to go.

The Cornhuskers weren't quite finished, using an 11-0 run to slice IU's lead to 68-58 with 8:22 remaining.

The Lafayette boys' basketball team survived in the Class 4 Sectionals Tuesday against Lincoln Prep as the Fighting Irish held on to defeat the Tigers 32-31 at Liberty North High School.

LHS improves to 19-9 and they advanced to the Class 4 Quarterfinals for the first time in four years.  The Irish had lost in the sectional round of the playoffs each of the last three seasons.

Lincoln Prep jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Tuesday, but the Irish rallied and took their first lead of the game late in the second quarter and they led at halftime 18-17.

The two teams struggled to score all night and when they did score, Lafayette and Lincoln Prep traded baskets as neither team led by more than three points after halftime.  

Lafayette led 32-31 late in the fourth quarter and Lincoln had the last possession of the game, but they missed a couple driving layups and then turned the ball over as the game ended.

Colten Griffin led the Fighting Irish with 12 points, Alex Langley added eight and T.J. Alexander scored six.

Lafayette, who has now won seven straight and 11 of their last 12, will play Raytown South (24-3) in the Class 4 Quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. inside Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence. JOSEPH – One big inning from Illinois Springfield (10-7) ended Missouri Western softball's (12-9) win streak and prevented the Griffons from a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at the Spring Sports Complex. The Prairie Stars scored five in the top of the seventh in the first game to knock off MWSU, 6-4. The Griffons responded with a 3-1 victory in game two behind another solid outing from Kaili Hinds.

Kelly Uthe limited UIS to one unearned run on five hits through the first six innings, but the Prairie Stars jumped on her for seven hits and five runs in the seventh.

After a leadoff single in the seventh, Uthe coaxed a foul out to leave MWSU two outs from its sixth straight win. Then the next five batters singled and after a strikeout to put the Griffs an out from just needing one run to win, a two-RBI single gave UIS its first lead since the first inning. MIAA Co-Hitter of the Week Sydni Hawkins led off the bottom half of the seventh with a double, but never left second after two strikeouts and a foul out ended the game.

Chloe Armstrong went 3 for 4 in the game with a double, driving in one. Hawkins doubled and homered and. No other Griffon had more than one hit. MWSU left 10 runners on base in the game, striking out six times.

Hinds continued her string of solid outings, holding UIS to just two hits through her first five innings of work. She allowed one unearned run in the fourth and a third hit in the sixth. Hinds' last four appearances have earned her a save and three wins. Over her last 20 innings, she's allowed 16 hits, five total runs and just three earned runs.

Brea Blanton led off the game with a double, got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Armstrong and scored on a sac fly by Rachel Stewart to give MWSU an early 1-0 lead. Hawkins picked up her third hit of the day to lead off the second and swiped second, then advanced to third on a Markee Brown single then stole home to give MWSU a 2-0 lead. Rian Gere drove in Brown with a single to put the Griffs up 3-0.

Hinds pitched her third straight complete game, facing just 25 batters. She scattered three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out two. Taylor Hoelscher was the only Griffon with two hits, adding her second double of the day and going 2 for 3.

The same two teams meet again Wednesday afternoon for a single game at 1 p.m. Then the Griffons jump back into MIAA play this weekend with doubleheaders at Lincoln and Central Missouri.

Griffon softball splits doubleheader with Illinois Springfield

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Missouri Western men's golf team wrapped up play at the Warrior Invitational in Las Vegas Tuesday and the team finished fifth overall.  The Griffons shot a two-round score of 602.

Senior Lucas Horseman finished fourth overall after he shot a 1-under par 143 over the two rounds, while Matt Thomas tied for 16th with a 7-over par 151.

Missouri Western is back in action on Monday, March 16 as they compete in the Hillcat Classic at Owasso, Oklahoma.

Royals announce schedule change for September series with Oakland

TOPEKA, Kansas — If Kansas lawmakers pass a bill 
allowing student-athletes to make money off endorsements, you might see 
the next five-star KU or K-State basketball recruits selling cars, shoes
 or soda.

<a href="http://www.sfltimes.com/sports/ncaa-presses-senate-for-guardrails-on-athlete-pay" target="_blank">Dozens of states</a>, including <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas</a>, <a href="https://www.ozarksfirst.com/local-news/local-news-local-news/both-parties-support-paying-college-athletes-in-missouri/" target="_blank">Missouri </a>and <a href="https://oklahoman.com/article/5651462/oklahoma-legislator-files-bill-to-pay-college-athletes" target="_blank">Oklahoma</a>, are thinking about changing the rules since the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/10/29/774439078/ncaa-starts-process-to-allow-compensation-for-college-athletes" target="_blank">NCAA said</a>
 in October that it will eventually allow student-athletes to be paid 
for their name, image and likeness. These bills are stopgaps, aimed at 
putting rules in place should there be a period of time before national 
rules are approved by the NCAA or Congress.

It’s a question that’s been problematic for the NCAA for years; in 2016, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/04/us/politics/supreme-court-declconsider-ncaa-rules-on-paying-athletes.html" target="_blank">U.S. Supreme Court declined</a> to take up an antitrust suit filed by a former UCLA basketball player. California took matters into its own hands last year <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200SB206" target="_blank">with a law</a> to let students profit off their likeness, though it doesn't take effect until 2023.

Currently,
 student-athletes are ruled ineligible if they make money on 
endorsements. Missouri U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has proposed <a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/rep-cleaver-to-propose-law-requiring-colleges-to-pay-student-athletes" target="_blank">a national rule</a>
 that would have colleges directly pay athletes. The Kansas plan doesn’t
 go as far, instead allowing money from outside endorsement contracts.

Emporia
 State University President Allison Garrett urged Kansas lawmakers to 
approve the bill, but ultimately hopes it never has to take effect.

“This
 legislation in Kansas makes sense at this time,” Garrett said, “but the
 hope would be that there is that federal legislation.”

It’s a 
sort of begrudging endorsement from the schools. Kansas State University
 Athletic Director Gene Taylor wants to keep up the current system, in 
which student-athletes aren’t allowed outside endorsements deals.

“We
 would prefer no rules, honestly,” Taylor said. “Just let us continue 
that this scholarship is valuable enough. But that’s not the direction 
this is going, so we have to move forward.”

The colleges don’t 
want to be on the cutting edge, where they might run afoul of NCAA rules
 and trigger punishments from the league. But they also don’t want to be
 left behind if other states allow endorsement deals.

To walk that tightrope, <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/sb474/" target="_blank">Kansas’ bill</a>
 includes a trigger: It would only legalize outside endorsement deals 
for student-athletes after 15 other states have similar laws.

For schools in Kansas, the concern is that recruiting won’t be easy 
if other states allow athletes to make money but Kansas doesn’t.

“I
 think it gets very tough,” University of Kansas Director of Athletics 
Jeff Long said. “Without this bill passing, we would be placed at a 
disadvantage.”

The discussion comes at a time when KU <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/ku-denies-wrongdoing-response-ncaas-charges-recruiting-violations" target="_blank">is being investigated</a>
 for potential NCAA recruiting violations. It’s based on federal court 
testimony in which Adidas representatives said they made payments to 
recruits. The school didn’t address the allegations during a legislative
 hearing in Topeka, but <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2020/03/05/kansas-objects-to-ncaa-charges-in-response-to-allegations/111397794/" target="_blank">told the NCAA</a> that the agents weren’t working on behalf of KU.

Garrett wants to see enough controls in a Kansas law so the endorsement deals aren’t used as part of recruiting.

Lawmakers
 could take action on the bill later this session or continue work next 
year, according to Republican Sen. Julia Lynn, who chairs the Senate 
Commerce Committee.

Lynn said there are still a variety of details to work out, including how the endorsement deals would be taxed.

“Collegiate athletics is very complex. There are multiple layers there,” she said. “The money is really big in this issue.”

Republican
 Sen. Molly Baumgarnder wants to make sure there are enough protections 
in the bill, so athletes and their families know what they’re getting 
into with endorsement deals, especially when it comes to high school 
recruits.

“Agents are going to be flocking to high schools to try
 and enter into that contract,” Baumgarnder said. “How do the high 
school counselors, how do the high school coaches help that student that
 might be embarking on that next step?”

Smaller private schools, 
who aren’t major players in the recruiting game like KU, K-State and 
Wichita State are, are concerned about the types of endorsements that 
might be made available.

Some of the 20 schools in the Kansas 
Independent College Association have faith traditions that disapprove of
 alcohol and don’t allow it on campus.

But under the bill, the schools wouldn’t have any say in outside endorsement deals.

“A
 student-athlete could share his or her likeness with a beer company and
 the institution would have no power to limit such a contract,” KICA 
President Matt Lindsey told lawmakers.

MWSU golf teams continue play in first events of the spring

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat men's basketball program will serve as the host for the fourth straight year of the Central Region as a part of the 2020 NCAA Division II Tournament.

The Central Region will take place March 14 (four games, March 15 (two games) and March 17 (regional final) in Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Missouri.

Northwest will be taking part in its 20th NCAA tournament. It is the Bearcats's eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament under 11th-year head coach Ben McCollum. The Bearcats are 31-1 in 2019-20 and won NCAA Division II national championships in 2017 and 2019. Northwest has won seven consecutive MIAA regular season titles to go along with the five straight MIAA tourney crowns. Earlier today, Northwest secured the MIAA's automatic bid the regional with its 78-76 victory over Missouri Southern in the tournament's championship game.

Northwest will match up against No. 8 seed Oklahoma Baptist, on Sat., March 14, at 6 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

The Elite Eight and national semifinals will be held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana, on March 26 and 28.

This year's national championship game will be held Sunday, April 5, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Northwest gets No. 1 seed and will host NCAA Central Regional; opens with OBU

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men's basketball team claimed its fifth consecutive MIAA Tournament title with a 78-76 triumph over No. 22-ranked Missouri Southern at Municipal Auditorium.

Northwest (31-1 overall) won its 23rd straight game and 39th in a row on a neutral court with its third triumph this year over Missouri Southern. Missouri Southern is 23-8 on the year.

Northwest built a 15-point cushion in the opening half at 45-30 on the strength of 16 first-half points from both sophomore Trevor Hudgins and freshman Wes Dreamer. Northwest did not commit a turnover in the opening 20 minutes in taking a 45-33 lead to the locker room.

The Lions slowly chipped away at the Bearcat advantage in the second half. Northwest led 63-51 after a pair of free throws from sophomore Diego Bernard with 8:38 to play. MSSU went on an 11-2 run that put the Northwest lead at 65-62 with 4:50 on the clock. 

Hudgins claimed Most Outstanding Player honors in the tournament after leading the squad with 31 points. Hudgins scored nine of Northwest's final 11 points after Missouri Southern tied the game at 67-67 with 3:07 to play.

Hudgins turned into the closer as he hit on an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:49 left to give Northwest a 70-67 lead. Following a bucket from MSSU's Cam Martin, Hudgins hit a floater in the lane that rattled in the rim but settled into the net for a 72-69 lead with 2:09 to play. Martin answered again as he matched Hudgins point-for-point with 31 in the contest. Martin's bucket left the Lions trailing 72-71 with 1:40 to play.

Hudgins hit a right-handed layup with 1:11 to play to extend the lead back to three. After a Bearcat defensive stop, Hudgins went to work and tallied his final points on the day with :22.8 to play that gave Northwest a 76-71 cushion. MSSU's Winston Dessesow tallied a layup with :07.6 to play that cut the lead back to three. 

Bernard then caught the ensuing inbounds pass at half court, avoided an attempted foul by the Lions and laid in the Bearcats's final basket with 3.6 to play. Dessesow nailed a triple at the buzzer for the final two-point margin and Northwest claimed the MIAA title for the fifth straight season, 78-76. 

Bernard capped the game with a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Bernard also handed out six assists.

Dreamer finished with 18 poitns on 7-of-14 shooting that included 4-of-10 from three-point range.

No. 1 Bearcats hold off Southern 78-76 to win 5th straight MIAA Tourney title

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Baseball recorded their first series sweep of the 2020 season on Sunday afternoon. The Griffons (8-15, 3-3 MIAA) beat Rogers State (9-10, 0-6 MIAA) 11-10 in game three in their first home conference series of the year.

The Griffons brought out seven different pitchers to throw in Sunday's game. Andrew Meier got the start for game three and only pitched a single inning allowing three runs to the Hillcats. Justin Wood, Jacob Cooper, Talbott Buford and Jake Gilbert were brought in for relief of Meier before Brock Wrolstad and Brian Tan finished out the game with the victory and save, respectively.

Sunday's game featured 10 runs from the Hillcats, including seven that held the lead until the sixth inning. In the seventh, Andrew Meier's single brought in Ben Tsui to take the 9-8 lead which the Griffons held for the rest of the contest. Rogers State would attempt to retake the lead with some late game heroics in the ninth, but Brian Tan left one Hillcat on base to close it out.

- Brian Tan recorded his third save of the season on Sunday afternoon, second on the series against the Hillcats.

- The Griffons tallied 13 hits throughout the contest. Gustavo Gonzales recorded three, while Andrew Meier, Zach Hanlan and Nolan Meyer would tally two apiece.

Northwest baseball loses series finale at Emporia State 8-6

Udoka Azubuike was selected as Kansas’ ninth Player of the Year while Scott Drew earned Baylor’s first Coach of the Year to headline the 2019-20 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball awards. 

Marcus Garrett (Kansas) was named Defensive Player of the Year while Davion Mitchell (Baylor) was voted Newcomer of the Year and Jahmi’Us Ramsey (Texas Tech) captured Freshman of the Year. Devonte Bandoo (Baylor) picked up the Sixth Man Award and Freddie Gillespie (Baylor) was voted as the Most Improved Player. 

Azubuike leads the NCAA in field goal percentage at .748. The Delta, Nigeria, center is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double with 13.7 ppg and 10.5 rpg. He also leads the Big 12 in double-doubles with 15 and is second in blocked shots at 2.6. Azubuike is the only player in the NCAA averaging a double-double (14.0 ppg, 11.6 rpg) and 3.0 blocks in conference games this season.

Versatile on both ends of the court, Garrett was also named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team for the second straight season. He leads the league with 4.65 assists and a 2.67 assist/turnover ratio while ranking fourth with 1.81 steals. The junior guard from Dallas contributes 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. 

After sitting out a year as a transfer, Mitchell earned a spot in the starting lineup in his first season on the floor with the Bears. The sophomore point guard from Hinesville, Georgia, is fourth in the Big 12 in assist/turnover ratio at 1.70, seventh with 3.8 assists and eighth with 1.5 steals. He averages 9.9 points and 2.7 rebounds. 

Ramsey is fifth in the Big 12 in scoring and leads all freshmen with 15.0 points a game. His .442 field goal percentage also ranks fifth while he is second in three-point percentage (.426) and fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.2). The guard from Arlington, Texas, has started all 27 games he played in and scored 20-plus points in five outings. Ramsey was a three-time honoree for Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.  

Bandoo plays over 25 minutes a game for Baylor as the first man off the bench. In his second season with the Bears, the senior guard averages 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds. The Canada native has nine double-figure scoring games this season with a season-high of 18 points in his last home game on March 2 against Texas Tech. 

Gillespie has started 39 of 42 games since entering BU’s starting lineup on Feb. 9, 2019, including all 30 games this season. The senior forward from St. Paul, Minnesota, is third in the Big 12 with 9.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks while averaging 9.6 points. His 4.1 offensive rebounds are tied for first in the Conference while his 16 double-digit rebound games and 11 double-doubles are second. 

Drew has led Baylor to its highest Big 12 finish in program history with sole possession of second place. The Bears set a school-record with 15 league wins, three more than any previous season in program history. BU has been ranked in the top 5 in the national polls for nine straight weeks, including five consecutive weeks at No. 1.
