East Buchanan High School has hired it new head football coach as Dan Ritter will take over the Bulldog program.

Ritter comes to East Buchanan after serving as an assistant coach at Central High School in St. Joseph.  He was the head freshmen coach for the Indians and varsity linebackers coach.

Ritter is a St. Joseph native as he graduated from Lafayette High School and then played football at Missouri Western State University.  Ritter finished up in 2012 at MWSU and was a back-up linebacker on the Griffons 2012 MIAA championship team as he played in all 14 games.

Ritter will take over for Kevin Bryan, who announced his retirement in January after 13 years at East Buchanan.  Bryan won multiple district championships and guided the Bulldogs to two state semifinal appearances in 2015 and 2017.  East Buchanan went 4-7 this past season and they finished 2-5 in the KCI.

Eight Missouri Western basketball players earn MIAA academic awards

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior Udoka Azubuike and sophomore Devon Dotson were each named Associated Press All-America Second Team, the AP announced Friday. The Associated Press All-America Team was selected and voted on by a media panel of 65.

Azubuike and Dotson gives Kansas an Associated Press All-America selection each of the last five seasons. Last year, Dedric Lawson was a third-team selection, while Devonte’ Graham was a first-team choice in 2018. Frank Mason III (first) and Josh Jackson (third) were named in 2017 with Mason being named 2017 Associated Press Player of the Year. Perry Ellis was a second-team selection in 2016. In head coach Bill Self’s 17 seasons at Kansas, there have been 18 Jayhawks named to the Associated Press All-America teams (see below).

Azubuike, a senior from Delta, Nigeria, led Division I in field goal percentage at 74.8%, which helped his career percentage of 74.4% break the all-time Division I field goal percentage record of UCF’s Tacko Fall (74.0%). Azubuike led the Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game. A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection who was named Big 12 Player of the Year, Azubuike was the only player in the conference to average a double-double (13.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg).

Dotson led the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 ppg, steals (2.1) and free throws made (142). The Charlotte, N.C., sophomore guard ranked among the Big 12 leaders in 20-point games (second at 9, field goal percentage (second at 46.8, free throw percentage (fifth at 83.0, assists (fifth at 4.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fifth at 1.7). Dotson became just the fifth Jayhawk to lead the Big 12 in scoring joining Drew Gooden in 2002, Wayne Simien in 2005, Frank Mason III in 2017 and Dedric Lawson in 2019. Griffon athletic department discusses cancellation of spring sports

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State University has officially halted all remaining intercollegiate athletic team practices, scrimmages and activities for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, Director of Athletics Kyle Moats verified Thursday (March 19).

Thursday’s announcement comes less than a week after the MVC President’s Council took formal action on March 13 to cancel all remaining spring competitions.

In an effort to remain in concert with campus policies, procedures and social distancing standards related to the global coronavirus (COVID-19) threat, the following updates are now in place:

• Discontinuation of all team practices, individual instruction, in-person team meetings and film sessions

• Discontinuation of team strength and conditioning workouts and weight room activities

• Cancellation of spring football workouts and spring game

• Cancellation of Bears All-Sports Showcase and Maroon and White Banquet

• All athletic fields, courts, competition facilities and workout facilities will be closed for the remainder of the semester

• Missouri State student-athletes will continue to have access to the following facilities with revised hours of operation:

- Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Academic Achievement Center

- Athletic Medical and Rehabilitation Services staff and athletic training facilities 

“In communicating with other Missouri Valley Conference schools, all of them are either following the same protocol we are or headed that direction in the coming days,” said Moats. “Being responsive to the changing landscape of this issue is a priority for all of us.”

22 Griffons earn Indoor Track & Field academic honors

Before evening play a summer college baseball game in the MINK League, team owner Titus Bond has moved his to-be-named franchise from Chanute, Kansas to Clinton, Missouri.

Bond is entering his first season as team owner and member of the MINK. Bond relocated his franchise due to field availability in Chanute. The coaching staff and roster will remain the same. The team will play in Wagoner Memorial Field in Clinton. The team will also remain in the South Division, alongside fellow members Joplin Outlaws, Sedalia Bombers, Nevada Griffons, and Jefferson City Renegades. 

The team is hosting a name the team contest, and plans to announce a team name and logo by March 25. People may enter nominations for the new team name by visiting the Clinton Baseball Team Facebook page at fb.me/clintonbaseball2020.

Newest MINK League team has moved from Chanute to Clinton

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Chuck Lillie, a bright young mind in the recruiting and scouting world, has been hired by Kansas State’s football program as a Scouting Analyst.

Lillie will spend his time evaluating film of prospects and assisting the football coaches in their recruiting efforts. He will also work with Director of Football Recruiting Taylor Braet and the recruiting staff in hosting prospects on campus.

“We are thrilled to have Chuck as a part of our program,” head coach Chris Klieman said. “We knew we wanted to expand our recruiting staff and provide more assistance for Taylor and Hank Jacobs, and to get someone like Chuck is phenomenal for our program. He not only comes from one of the top football programs in the country, he has tremendous organizational skills, brings a great deal of energy and is well-connected in the recruiting world. We are excited to have him on board.”

Lillie worked for five seasons at Clemson while obtaining his undergraduate degree, including three seasons in recruiting. He comes to Manhattan after serving in the 2019 pre-season as a Pro Scouting Intern with the New York Giants before returning to Clemson to serve as a Playoff Analyst for the Tigers’ 2019 campaign.

“I’m extremely excited to join Coach Klieman and the entire Kansas State football family,” Lillie said. “It’s an honor to be working for this staff, and I’m looking forward to helping bring championships to Kansas State.”

Lillie earned his start at Clemson as a recruiting assistant from 2015 to 2017 where he developed a very thorough understanding for the Tigers’ unique style of recruiting. He collaborated with coaches and colleagues to create strategies to generate interest in Clemson among all recruits. He also assisted in the hosting of prospects and families while on campus and in Football Operations complex.

After graduating from Clemson with a degree in Sports Communication in May 2017, Lillie was a Recruiting Operations Intern for one year before pursuing his master’s in Athletic Leadership and serving as a Defensive Graduate Student Intern for the Tigers during their undefeated National Championship run in 2018.

While working on the recruiting side, Lillie assisted coaches and the recruiting department in execution of both day-to-day and big-picture recruiting plans. He worked to identify any unknown prospects and passed those prospects along to coaches to be evaluated further. He also worked directly with the graphic design department to send out personalized graphics to recruits.

Working with the Tiger defensive staff, Lillie assisted coaches with daily preparations for practice, diagramed opponent offensive plays, developed weekly opponent game plans and assisted in weekly opponent breakdown.

In his one year in East Rutherford, Lillie studied and evaluated NFL players and made cut-up tapes on players for the Giants’ Pro Personnel Department to evaluate. He also monitored the daily NFL waiver wire and managed free agent short lists across all positions. In addition, Lillie wrote advanced scouting reports on upcoming opponents, including team tendencies and personnel packages, and he assisted with all free agent workouts.

Lillie is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in 2013.

K-State hires Chuck Lillie as football Scouting Analyst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The cash-strapped Kansas City Chiefs were quiet on the first day of NFL free agency with their biggest move Wednesday a restructuring of defensive end Frank Clark's contract in an effort to alleviate some of their financial misery.

Similar moves could be made in the coming days, potentially for wide receiver Sammy Watkins and offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif as the Super Bowl champions try to free up the resources to bolster their defense in free agency and sign star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to what could be a record-setting extension.

The Chiefs also have to decide what to do with Chris Jones, who was given the franchise tag earlier this week and would need to be offered a one-year deal worth at least $16,126,000. The problem is that number is almost untenable for Kansas City, which means general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid have to decide whether to reach a long-term deal with him — something they failed to do last offseason — or attempt to trade him to a team with more cap space.

The trade would be akin to what the Seahawks did with Clark, who was given the franchise tag and then dealt to the Chiefs for a pair of draft picks. Veach proceeded to sign him to a $105.5 million, five-year contract extension.

“You're going to have to find, really, where a team is, right? Because you talk about a tag-and-trade, you're talking about draft quantity and money, and the team has to be in a position it makes sense for them,” Veach said. “It was a unique setup last year and certainly we were happy to get that done and ultimately win the Super Bowl.”

Watkins starred during the Chiefs' championship victory over San Francisco, and the club would love to have him back given they expect to lose wide receiver Demarcus Robinson in free agency. But he also carries a prohibitive $21 million hit against the salary cap next season, so Watkins' deal will likely be restructured if he isn't released.

“Sammy is a guy like Chris that we'll have dialogue with,” Veach said. “There's different scenarios and options that will play out with him. He's a guy we do want back. These are good problems to have. You win a Super Bowl, you have a lot of good players. We'll talk about the landscape of where we are. What's the landscape for us and how can we make it work?”

The only deal the Chiefs have reached in free agency so far is a two-year contract with backup quarterback Chad Henne, who missed most of last season with a broken ankle. The Chiefs elected to bring him back as the second-string QB over Matt Moore, who was signed when Henne went down and wound up leading them to a pair of wins.

If the Chiefs manage to free up some salary cap space, expect them to target the best cornerbacks still available. They lost Kendall Fuller, Morris Claiborne and Bashaud Breeland to free agency, leaving them perilously thin at the position.

The Chiefs also could address that problem through the draft, though their selections will come at the end of each round.

“I get excited (about the draft) because Brett and his guys do such a good job, you know you're going to get a good player,” Reid said. “I'm OK with it being 32. We're OK there. (AP) — The cash-strapped Kansas City Chiefs were quiet on the first day of NFL free agency with their biggest move Wednesday a restructuring of defensive end Frank Clark's contract in an effort to alleviate some of their financial misery.Similar moves could be made in the coming days, potentially for wide receiver Sammy Watkins and offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif as the Super Bowl champions try to free up the resources to bolster their defense in free agency and sign star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to what could be a record-setting extension.The Chiefs also have to decide what to do with Chris Jones, who was given the franchise tag earlier this week and would need to be offered a one-year deal worth at least $16,126,000. The problem is that number is almost untenable for Kansas City, which means general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid have to decide whether to reach a long-term deal with him — something they failed to do last offseason — or attempt to trade him to a team with more cap space.The trade would be akin to what the Seahawks did with Clark, who was given the franchise tag and then dealt to the Chiefs for a pair of draft picks. Chiefs restructure DE Frank Clark’s contract to create cap space

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self has spent much of the past week mulling ways to commemorate one of the more remarkable seasons in the school's proud basketball history, one that began with numerous off-the-court distractions and ended in the unprecedented cancellation of the NCAA tournament.

The Jayhawks can start by celebrating their finish atop the final Top 25 from The Associated Press.

The regular-season Big 12 champions, who were 28-3 when the season abruptly ended after the first day of the conference tournament last week, received 63 of 65 first-place votes from a national media panel in balloting released Wednesday. That easily outdistanced No. 2 Gonzaga and No. 3 Dayton, each of whom received a first-place vote.

"Nobody in America had better season than we did," Self said. "How do you give credit to that effort and have it be recognized? And I don't know exactly how we do it. Do we do it within our own fan base? Do we do it within podcasts or whatnot? Whatever we've come up with so far pales in comparison to the accolades they deserve."

It's the fourth time since the inception of the men's poll for the 1946-47 season that Kansas finished on top, though typically there would still be March Madness to play. The AP does not declare a national champion in the sport because of the tournament.

The final rankings were based on play through March 11, when the coronavirus pandemic brought the sport to a halt.

The Jayhawks claim five national championships, the most recent in 2008 after they beat Memphis in the NCAA tournament title game. But despite a season in which 353 teams played thousands of games and Kansas finished as the clear-cut No. 1, the school's Hall of Fame coach was unwilling to stake claim to any kind of championship.

"That's not the way this is all intended to be," Self said. "Coaches prepare their teams to peak at certain times. I'm proud of how our team prepared all season but especially at the end of the season, we were terrific. We operated under some pressure and dealt with some stuff. From our standpoint, sure, that would be great, but even if that were to occur, there would be a huge asterisk next to it, and I would agree with that."

Gonzaga (31-2) finished second after beating Saint Mary's in the West Coast Conference finals, one of a handful of league tournaments that were completed. But the Bulldogs will be left to wonder whether another dominant team from coach Mark Few would have finally delivered the school a national championship.

Dayton (29-2) was third behind breakout stars Jalen Crutcher and Obi Toppin. That matched the 1955-56 team led by Bill Uhl and Jim Paxson for the best finish in program history.

"The voters who deemed us worthy to be one of the top five teams in the country and finish in the poll in the top three, we appreciate that," Flyers coach Anthony Grant said. "Having that recognition hopefully is something -- another thing that you can look back on and will be in the history books, that this team was able to accomplish a top-five ranking."

Florida State (26-5) was fourth in the final poll, easily the best finish for the Seminoles, and No. 5 Baylor (26-4) spent a longer stretch at No. 1 than any other team during a topsy-turvy season.

"I think 'historical' always sums up a season when you're able to set so many records and accomplish so many things," said Bears coach Scott Drew, whose team was in the running for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament after finishing second to Kansas in the Big 12 race. "This group really got along well. It is a group that really loved one another, spent time with one another, and they were always positive, and that led us to having a historical year."

San Diego State, Creighton, Kentucky, Michigan State and Villanova rounded out the top 10.

No. 11 Duke finished outside the top 10 for only the second time since 2007. Maryland, Oregon, Louisville and Seton Hall came next.

The rest of the Top 25 included reigning national champion Virginia at No. 16, followed by Wisconsin, BYU, Ohio State and Auburn. The final five in the poll were Illinois, Houston, Butler, West Virginia and Iowa.

The first two teams outside the poll were two teams with a good chance to have been NCAA tournament darlings -- or break a whole lot of brackets. Stephen F. Kansas finishes No. 1 in final AP Top 25 poll

The Missouri Western men's basketball team received a verabal committment Tuesday from Johnson County Community College guard JaQuaylon Mays.

The Lincoln, Nebraska native spent two seasons at JCCC and was named the Jayhawk Conference Division II Player of the Year this past season.  Mays, who is 6'2" and 155 pounds, led the Cavaliers to a 25-7 record as he averaged 16.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game.  He shot 53.0 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from the three-point line and 71.9 percent on his free throws.

Mays ranked second in the Jayhawk Conference in scoring, second in made free throws, second in assists, sixth in field goal percentage and eighth in free throw percentage.  He scored in double figures a team-best 27 times, including 11 games of 20 or more points.

Mays has two years of eligibility left and he'll join a Griffon team that went 18-14 this past season and finished fourth in the MIAA with a 13-6 league mark.

The Missouri Western women's basketball team is adding junior college point guard Kelcie Hale to their roster as she has verbally committed to the Griffons.

Hale played the past two years at North Iowa Area Community College and she led the Trojans to a 32-1 record this past season and a Region XI championship.  Hale was named the Region XI Tournament MVP as she scored 24 points and had four assists in the title game against Kirkwood.

The 5'3" sophomore from Earlham, Iowa was named First Team All-Region XI as she averaged 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.  

Hale will join a Missouri Western team entering its second season under head coach Candi Whitaker as the Griffons went 21-8 this past season and finished tied for fourth in the MIAA at 13-6.

The City of St. Joseph also ​signed an emergency declaration ​today banning gatherings of 50 people or more. Although the declaration provides an exception for “day-to-day operations such as schools,” the district is taking proactive measures to limit the risk to our staff, students and their families. In light of this, we will be suspending all SJSD activities, including spring sports, effective today, March 16, 2020 until further notice.

This scheduling announcement addresses activities and spring sports only at this time. Discussions and decisions related to other areas of impact in our district are still underway. We will send updated communication as soon as we know more.

MINK League hopeful to still open season on May 27

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back some major pieces from their Super Bowl championship team.

The Chiefs placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones on Monday, then exercised club options on running back Damien Williams and linebacker Damien Wilson as the NFL's negotiating period opened with a frenzy ahead of free agency later in the week.

The nonexclusive tag means Jones must be offered a one-year contract for at least $16,126,000, the average of the top five salary cap hits at defensive tackle for the previous five years. It also means that if Jones signs an offer sheet from another team, the Chiefs can match that offer or let him go and receive two first-round picks as compensation.

''We had dialogue last offseason. We had dialogue prior to the season starting,'' Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said at the scouting combine. ''Chris did a great job of blocking that all and tackling the season. He handled it like a true pro and we have an opportunity now that we've come around to pick up those talks and try to get something done.''

None of which means Jones will play for the Chiefs, especially at that salary.

The club is strapped for cap space heading into free agency and would like to sign Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes to a potentially record-setting extension. That might only be possible if the Chiefs signed Jones to a more flexible long-term deal - something the sides have discussed for more than a year but have failed to accomplish - or trade him to a team with more cap space and the need for a pass-rushing defensive tackle.

That would be similar to what the Seahawks did last season with defensive end Frank Clark. After tagging him, they sent him to the Chiefs for a pair of draft picks, and Kansas City proceeded to sign him to a $105.5 million, five-year extension.

Now, could the Chiefs potentially afford two pass rushers making that kind of money?

''It's challenging,'' Veach acknowledged, ''but it doesn't mean it's impossible, and I think working through the breakdowns and dispersal it's always a challenge. But I think when you have guys as talented as Chris and these other players, you're going to turn over every scenario to see what exactly can be done.''

Jones had 15 1/2 sacks two seasons ago, which drove up his market for a long-term deal. He wound up skipping the entire offseason when that didn't happen, but Jones returned in time for training camp and started 12 of 13 games.

He finished with nine sacks, but he was instrumental in helping the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl title since 1970. He was at the forefront of holding the 49ers' ground game in check, and his ability to pressure quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo - and knock down a key pass attempt late in the game - helped preserve the Chiefs' 31-20 victory.

The 27-year-old Williams, who missed five games to a rib injury last season, still ran for nearly 500 yards and five TDs while giving Mahomes a valuable playmaker out of the backfield. Williams was at his best in the postseason, too, carrying 46 times for 196 yards and four TDs while scoring the go-ahead and clinching touchdowns in the Super Bowl.

That performance in Miami made Williams' return to the Chiefs a foregone conclusion.

''Damien was banged up just a little bit early. That's what he's capable of doing,'' Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. ''As long as he's healthy, that's been the only thing the last couple years. But he stays healthy and he'll do fine.''

Wilson started all 16 games and finished second on the team with 81 tackles last season. But his return was less certain because the Chiefs could have freed up $4.5 million with only $875,000 in dead money by letting him go.

The Chiefs also declined to pick up their option on backup offensive lineman Cameron Erving.

The moves made Monday are only the start of what should be a busy offseason for the Super Bowl champs. They have to decide what to do with wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who carries a prohibitive $21 million cap hit for next season, and continue to work with Mahomes' agent Leigh Steinberg on a market-setting contract extension.

They also need to replenish their defensive backfield, either through trades, free agency or the draft. Cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland, Keith Reaser, Morris Claiborne and Kendall Fuller all become free agents this week, leaving the Chiefs with only Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton on the 53-man roster.

''I think Charvarius Ward and the things he was able to do the last two years speak for themselves. Rashad, because of the injuries he had, he stepped up and played an important role for us. We're excited for both those guys,'' Veach said, ''but the volume will be low if we don't retain all these corners. We'll try to address that as we move into the offseason.''

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has made the decision to cancel the 2020 spring sports season due to the heightened state of emergency due to COVID-19, the organization announced Monday. 

The statement from Jim Carr, the president and CEO of the NAIA, reads as follows:

"After convening the Council of Presidents Executive Committee this morning, and with input from the National Administrative Council and National Eligibility Committee, the decision has been made to cancel the spring 2020 sports season, effective immediately.

We know this is extremely disappointing, especially for our student-athletes. All possible options for maintaining the spring season were discussed at great length by multiple governance groups. However, the growing state of emergency due to COVID-19, as well as the Center for Disease Control's recommendation yesterday to limit gatherings to fewer than 50 people for eight weeks, meant we could not in good conscience move forward, possibly putting student-athletes, staff, and fans at risk.

In an effort to provide relief, no spring sport student-athlete will be charged a season of competition. Any spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled full-time in 2020 will be awarded two additional semester terms of attendance or the equivalent.

We know there are outstanding questions regarding relief for winter sport student-athletes, implications on transfer regulations, and impacts to academic eligibility rules. We are working closely with the appropriate governance groups to determine answers and will continue to share information with membership as it becomes available."

Columbia, Mo.- Due to continuing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the Show-Me Showdown for Classes 4 and 5.

The decision was made in consultation with local and state officials, as well as the member schools. The most recent CDC recommendations of limiting gatherings played a large part in the making of this decision.

“We understand the unexpected hurdles this creates for our schools and fans, and apologize for the inconveniences it has caused. Our thoughts are with our schools as they navigate the uncertainty of these times,” said Dr. Kerwin Urhahn, MSHSAA Executive Director.

This list consists of some of the top players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA and NCCAA. Northwest Missouri State's Ryan Hawkins (Atlantic, Iowa) and Trevor Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) were each named to the 2020 Bevo Francis Award Top 25 watch list. The Bearcat duo were earlier named first-team all-MIAA selections after helping lead Northwest to a 31-1 record that included MIAA regular season and tournament titles.

Clearly, this is a highly prestigious group of players that have helped lead their teams to great heights. MEC announces All-Conference basketball selections

The Lafayette High School boys' basketball team lost to Raytown South 60-40 in their Class 4 Quarterfinal game at Blue Spring South High School Saturday night.

The Fighting Irish finish their season 19-10 as they made their first trip to the quarterfinals since 2016.

Lafayette fell behind early to Ray South 8-3 but then used a 14-0 run to end the first quarter and start the second to take a 17-8 advantage.  The Cardinals closed the first half on a 7-0 run as LHS led at halftime 17-15.

Lafayette extended its lead to 24-17 early in the third quarter before Raytown South scored nine straight points and eventually led 36-31 after three quarter.

Irish senior T.J. Alexander converted a lay-up and free throw to start the fourth quarter as he cut the deficit to two points, but it was all Raytown South after that.  The Cardinals closed the game on a 24-6 run to pull away and advance to the Class 4 Final Four next week in Springfield.

Colten Griffin led Lafayette with 12 points, Alexander added nine and Jamar James scored six points.

Ray South will play Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) in their semifinal game Thursday at JQH Arena in Springfield.

Friday MSHSAA State Basketball Tournament Results/Schedule

Northwest Missouri State sophomore point guard Trevor Hudgins was named the 2020 D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year, and he also captured first-team all-region honors.

Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) becomes the fourth straight Bearcat to win the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year award, following Joey Witthus (2018-19) and Justin Pitts (2016-17, 2017-18).

Hudgins led the nation in three-point field goal percentage (53.3% - 105-of-121). Hudgins averaged 19.6 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game in helping lead the Bearcats to a 31-1 record, an MIAA regular season championship and an MIAA postseason tournament crown in 2019-2020. Hudgins was named the MIAA Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the 2020 MIAA Tournament. Hudgins had 18 20-point scoring games to go along with four 30-point scoring contests. He collected the school's first triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Fort Hays State (Jan. 25).

Bearcat junior forward Ryan Hawkins (Atlantics, Iowa) earned a second-team all-region nod. Hawkins was selected as the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, while also being tabbed a first-team all-MIAA performer. Hawkins collected eight double-doubles, reached 30 or more points on five occasions and posted 20 20-point scoring contests. Hawkins set the Bearcat single-game scoring record with 44 against Southern Nazarene on Nov. 2.

Hudgins is now eligible for D2CCA All-America honors and the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year Award which will be voted upon later this month.

Northwest Missouri State sophomore point guard Trevor Hudgins was named the 2020 D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year, and he also captured first-team all-region honors.Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) becomes the fourth straight Bearcat to win the D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year award, following Joey Witthus (2018-19) and Justin Pitts (2016-17, 2017-18).Hudgins led the nation in three-point field goal percentage (53.3% - 105-of-121). Hudgins averaged 19.6 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game in helping lead the Bearcats to a 31-1 record, an MIAA regular season championship and an MIAA postseason tournament crown in 2019-2020. Hudgins was named the MIAA Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the 2020 MIAA Tournament. Hudgins had 18 20-point scoring games to go along with four 30-point scoring contests.
