KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA announced the location for its 2021 Spring Championships. The 2020 scheduled championship venues in baseball, men’s golf, and outdoor track and field will again be the site of the championships in 2021. Along with those championships, next year’s Softball Championship and Women’s Golf Championship are scheduled to be played at their 2021 originally contracted site.

Opportunities to remain the host for next year’s championship was accepted by each site after the cancellation of the 2020 spring seasons due to COVID-19. A recommendation by the Association’s COVID-19 Task Force allowed locations to continue to host each championship. The recommendation was then unanimously approved by the MIAA Institutional Representatives Council (IRC). 

The 2021 Baseball Championship finals presented by Mammoth Turf will be hosted by Missouri Southern at Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Missouri on May 13-16. Pittsburg State will host the 2021 Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 7-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas. Next year’s Men’s Golf Championship is slated for April 19-21 at Shangri-La Golf Course and Resort in Monkey Island, Oklahoma. 

Central Oklahoma will host the 2021 Softball Championship on May 6-9. The venue will be Broncho Softball Stadium in Edmond, Oklahoma if the USA Softball Complex in Oklahoma City remains unavailable due to construction.  Next year’s Women’s Golf Championship will be held on April 22-24 at Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

MIAA announces 2021 spring championship locations

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat women's soccer team has set its 2020 fall schedule.

Under the direction of third-year head coach Marc Gordon, Northwest will play an 18-match regular season docket with 10 of those contests set for the Bearcat Pitch.

Northwest is slated to begin the 2020 season at home Friday, Sept. 4, against Southwest Baptist at 3 p.m.

The Bearcats will return a pair of all-MIAA selections in senior Manuela Gonzalez (Overland Park, Kansas) and sophomore Kaylie Rock (Lee's Summit, Missouri). Gonzalez earned all-MIAA honorable mention in her first year as a Bearcat after transferring from Johnson County Community College. She played in 19 games in 2019 scoring two goals and recording one assist. Rock also earned all-MIAA honorable mention in her first year as a Bearcat. She has played in 19 games in 2019 netting in three goals and two assists. 

The Bearcats set the single-season school record for assists with 24 in 2019. The Bearcats tallied 29 goals in 2019, compared to nine goals in the entire 2018 campaign. Northwest's 31 goals scored are the most since the Bearcats also put 31 in the net in the 2012 season.

Northwest posted a mark of 6-10-3 overall and 4-5-2 in MIAA play in 2019. Northwest reached the MIAA Tournament for only the third time in school history and made its first appearance in the conference's postseason play since 2012.

ATLANTA – Kansas junior Marcus Garrett has been named the 2020 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday.

Garrett won the honor after being named one of four finalists along with Ashton Hagans (Kentucky, Tre Jones (Duke) and Mark Vital (Baylor). Garrett and DiDi Richards of Baylor, the Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year winner, were chosen by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s board of selectors, comprised of leading journalists from around the country, who based their selections on outstanding on-court defensive performances during the 2019-20 regular college basketball season. Each winner will be honored with a ceremony at a later date.

“First, I would like to thank God. I would also like to thank my coaches and teammates because these awards are won as a team, not individually. I’d also like to thank the Naismith Awards voters,” Garrett said. “We had a great season as did the other finalists who were also worthy of this award. I hope and pray all are safe with the current happenings worldwide, and we get back to normalcy soon. Rock Chalk!”

Garrett led the Big 12 in assists (4.6) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7). The guard from Dallas also ranked among the Big 12 leaders in steals (fifth at 1.8). Garrett averaged 4.5 deflections per game this season, including 6.9 in his last nine outings for No. 1 Kansas. For the season, Garrett averaged 9.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was the 2020 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA All-District VI, All-Big 12 Second/Third Team and a unanimous Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection.

This is the third year of the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award. West Virginia’s Jevon Carter was the inaugural recipient in 2018 and Matisse Thybulle of Washington was last year’s honoree.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou rising junior Xavier Pinson and rising seniors Mitchell Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon announced Tuesday that they will enter their names in the 2020 NBA Draft pool in order to test the process, but will all take steps to retain their collegiate eligibility to allow a return to Columbia for the 2020-21 campaign.

“I’m very supportive of all three of them going through this to receive key information from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee and greatly benefit from the process,” head coach Cuonzo Martin said. “I know they each have goals to pursue professional basketball at the highest levels and this is a significant step in that journey. We’ll help them in any way we can.”

The NCAA deadline for withdrawal from the NBA Draft is June 3.

Pinson exploded offensively during his sophomore season, averaging 11.1 points while shooting 40 percent from the field and 81.7 percent from the free throw line. He erupted in league play, pouring in 13.3 points per game and reaching double digits 10 times. In the final nine games of the season, Pinson scored 18.9 points per game, including four 20-point outings and a career-high 32 point outburst in a win over Ole Miss. Pinson became just the third Tiger in the last three decades to reach 525 points, 150 assists and 150 rebounds in his first 65 or fewer games.

In his fourth season at Mizzou, Smith had his best campaign as a Tiger in 2019-20, setting career-highs in points (153, rebounds (146) and assists (20). He entered his redshirt junior season with 10 total career triples, and made 20 treys alone in 2019-20. Despite starting just 13 games, Smith led Mizzou in rebounding with 4.9 per game. He was stellar the free throw line, shooting 85.4 percent from the charity stripe to help the Tigers set a new single-season program record from the foul line.

Tilmon appeared in 17 games a junior, averaging 8.2 points and 4.4 points while shooting 58.9 percent from the field. He racked up a team-best 21 blocked shots as a junior and has 79 in his career, which ranks 11th all-time at Mizzou. His career field goal percentage of 56 percent is tied for fourth all-time in program history.

Three Tigers enter their names in 2020 NBA Draft pool

unanimously approved a recommendation regarding virtual countable athletically
related activities (CARA) from the Association's COVID-19 task force.


"Having this policy in place will now give our coaches the guidance to
stay engaged and connected with student-athletes," said Lori Hopkins,
Deputy Athletic Director at Northwest Missouri and Chairperson of the MIAA's COVID-19 Task Force. "It is
very important during this time to continue to put the physical and mental
well-being of our student-athletes at the forefront and this gives our coaches
that opportunity."


Due to the on-going developments related to COVID-19, the Association
previously announced that all Countable Athletically Related Activities,
including team and individual practices, meetings, and other organized
gatherings, were suspended indefinitely and would be re-evaluated at a future
date as circumstances warrant. In addition, all-conference and non-conference
competitions were canceled through the end of the academic year.


After further evaluation, the following MIAA
Student-Athlete CARA policies become effective April 1, 2020:


1.) No organized, in-person CARA of any type, in any location, in any sport
through at least June 1, 2020. This restriction does not prohibit voluntary
CARA performed by student-athletes, on their own time and at a safe location.
Student-athletes must continue to follow applicable public health and safety
guidelines and community restrictions.


2.) On-line supervised, "Virtual CARA" physical workouts and skill
instruction, regardless of location, are also not permitted through at least
June 1, 2020.


3.) "Virtual CARA", non-physical activities, are permitted with the
following restrictions:


&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a. All
"virtual CARA", non-physical activities, including film study, are
limited to eight hours per week in all sports.


&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;b. Only
NCAA Division II "certified" coaches may conduct these
"virtual" team meetings, chalk talks, film study sessions, technical
discussions, tactical sessions, and other non-physical activities.

4.) Coaches may continue (with no restrictions) to communicate (via phone,
computer, social media, etc.) with student-athletes for the purpose of
"checking-in" regarding academic work and student- athlete
well-being.


5.) Coaches can recommend written, self-directed workout plans provided they
are approved in accordance with proper procedures as outlined by each
institution's appropriate sport performance, medical and/or athletic training
personnel (and in accordance with the NCAA Recommendations on Preventing
Catastrophic Injury and Death). Taped demonstration videos on respective
workout plans are allowed in order to demonstrate proper form and technique.
Institutional personnel may not supervise, conduct or monitor workouts on or
off-campus, or virtually.


6.) In-person, on-campus meals and nutritional supplements may be provided in
situations where student-athletes are unable to leave campus. Off-campus
nutritional supplements are limited to the permissible items as outlined in
NCAA Bylaw 16.5.1(e)


7.) The MIAA IRC and the CEO
Council will convene regularly to assess changing circumstances and to make
shared decisions regarding amendments to the above-listed policies. The
policies noted will commence at 7 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, April 1st, 2020 and
remain in effect until additional guidance is provided.


The MIAA believes it is important
from a team chemistry and mental health aspect for coaches and student-athletes
to remain engaged and also allow athletes the opportunity to participate in
voluntary physical activities; however, based on the circumstances of the
situation, organized, team physical athletically related activities should be
suspended at this time.


The Association continues to strongly encourage everyone to practice social
distancing and listening to information from federal, state, and local public
health officials to promote the health and well-being of others during the
COVID-19 Outbreak.

MIAA approves recommendation regarding virtual countable athletically related activities

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas center Udoka Azubuike has been named a 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award® All-American, the Senior CLASS Award announced Tuesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Joining Azubuike on the 2019-20 Senior CLASS All-American first team were Markus Howard (Marquette, Sam Merrill (Utah State, Myles Powell (Seton Hall) and Cassius Winston (Michigan State). Howard was named the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award recipient.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. 

From Delta, Nigeria, Azubuike is a liberal arts and sciences major who will graduate from Kansas in May 2020. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection who overcame season-ending injuries his freshman and junior years, in 2019-20 Azubuike led Division I in field goal percentage at 74.8%, which helped his career percentage of 74.4% break the all-time Division I field goal percentage record of UCF’s Tacko Fall (74.0%). Azubuike led the Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game this season.

Azubuike was a unanimous 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection who was named 2020 Big 12 Player of the Year. He was the only player in the conference to average a double-double (13.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg).

Kansas finished the season 28-3 and won its 19th Big 12 and NCAA record 62nd conference regular-season title winning an all-time high 17 league games going 17-1. The Jayhawks finished 2019-20 ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches’ polls.

Historically, Kansas’ Wayne Simien was the 2005 Senior CLASS Award recipient. Previous Kansas Senior CLASS Award All-Americans include Frank Mason III (2017, Perry Ellis (2016, second team, Tyrel Reed (2011, Nick Collison (2003) and Kirk Hinrich (2003). The award started in 2001 and its All-American teams began in 2003.

Azubuike led the Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game this season.Azubuike was a unanimous 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection who was named 2020 Big 12 Player of the Year. ST. JOSEPH -&nbsp;For the fourth time in history, Missouri Western State University, partnered with the St. Joseph Sports Commission, will host the 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Central Regional at St. Joseph Country Club, May 3-5 as announced by NCAA sport liaison Jay Jay Rackley.

Sixty-six players will make up the field. The top 12 teams and six individuals not on a quality team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA, Great America Conference (GAC) and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) will comprise the Central Region field.

"St. Joseph Country Club is an excellent test of golf, great tournament course and perfect venue for this championship," tournament director&nbsp;Brett Esely&nbsp;said. "St. Joseph has a great tradition of hosting NCAA events as our proximity, venues, hospitality and people take great pride in creating a great experience for all involved."

This marks the fourth golf regional hosted at the venue as St. Joseph Country Club hosted the DII Men's Golf Regionals in 1997 and 2005 along with the DII Women's Golf Regional in 2013.

Griffons officially introduce new men's basketball coach Will Martin

Bishop LeBlond high school is now in search of a new head football coach as Eric Fairchild announced that he will resign as the end of the school year.

Fairchild said in a statement the move is “not what I wanted to do, but I felt that it was necessary for myself and my family.”

Fairchild spent just one season at LeBlond as he took over for Tony Dudik in 2019 and helped the Golden Eagles in their transition to 8-man football.  He went 2-7 in his only season as head coach.

Fairchild came to Bishop LeBlond after three years at Southwest Livingston, where he went 24-9.

LeBlond’s search for a head football coach and physical education teacher will begin immediately.

The NCAA will permit spring sport athletes who had their seasons shortened by the coronavirus outbreak to have an additional year of eligibility.

The NCAA Division I Council voted Monday to give college athletes who compete in spring sports such as baseball, softball and lacrosse a way to get back the season they lost, but did not guarantee financial aid.

Winter sports were not included in the decision. Council members declined to extend eligibility for student-athletes in sports where all or much of their regular seasons were completed.

How much scholarship money will be made available to each athlete will be determined by the athlete's school. The amount could range from nothing to as much the athlete received the year before.

Roster limits will be adjusted to fit returning athletes along with incoming freshmen.

NCAA approves extra year of eligibility for Division I spring athletes

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will renew one of its oldest rivalries in the coming years, as the Wildcats have inked a three-game men's basketball series with former conference foe Nebraska, starting Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, the schools announced Sunday (March 29).

The three-game agreement calls for a road game at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, December 18, 2021 and a home game at Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday December 17, 2022.

"This is a nice three-game series for us and a real win-win for both schools," said head coach Bruce Weber. "(Director of Operations) Drew (Speraw) was looking for a neutral site game at the same time as Nebraska and it just worked out for both parties. We started with the game in Kansas City then added the home-and-home series later. With the shared conference history, the closeness of both campuses and our relationship with Coach (Fred) Hoiberg and his staff, a series like this just makes too much sense."

The two schools, which played 219 games through five conferences (Missouri Valley, Big Six, Big Seven, Big Eight and Big 12, will reignite a rivalry that started more than 100 years ago with a 50-14 victory by Nebraska on February 19, 1906 and was last played at the Devaney Sports Center on February 23, 2011, a 61-57 Wildcat win.

K-State leads the all-time series, 126-93, including a 19-3 mark in games played in Kansas City. The 219 meetings represent the fourth-longest series in school history, following Kansas (293, Missouri (237) and Iowa State (231).

K-State will host Nebraska in the 11th Wildcat Classic at the Sprint Center in December, which will be the 23rd meeting between the schools in Kansas City and the first since a 62-58 win by K-State in the first round of the 2001 Big 12 Championship on March 8 at Kemper Arena (now Hy-Vee Arena). The Wildcats are 8-2 all-time in Wildcat Classic at the Sprint Center, including wins in 5 of the last 6 games.

This will be the first non-conference games between the schools since the 2001 Big 12 Championship. The teams played 7 times between the first meeting in 1906 and before Nebraska joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1915. K-State, Nebraska ink three-year men's basketball series

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western State University Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Josh Looney has announced the promotion of Will Martin to head men's basketball coach. Martin served as the assistant coach the past two seasons and becomes the sixth head coach in program history.

Martin was instrumental in the resurgence of the men's basketball program at Missouri Western. In his first season at MWSU, the Griffons doubled their win total from the previous season and saw three players receive All-MIAA honors. Martin's second season as an assistant at MWSU saw the Griffons turn in their most successful season in a decade, going 18-13 overall with a 13-6 record in MIAA play and a fourth place finish in the MIAA standings. The 2019-20 season brought the most wins for the program in a decade; most MIAA wins in 18 years; highest MIAA finish in 10 years; longest home win streak (11) in 17 years; most home wins in 14 years; and a program-record 305 made 3-point field goals in a season. In his two years at MWSU, Wicks had six players named All-MIAA including the program's first-ever MIAA Freshman of the Year (Will Eames, 2020) and first, first team All-MIAA and NABC All-District selection (Tyrell Carroll, 2020) in 14 years.

Before coming to Missouri Western, Martin served as assistant men's basketball coach and director of athletic admissions at Martin Methodist College (NAIA). Prior to that, Martin was the director of basketball operations at the University of San Francisco under head coach Rex Walters. Martin also gained Division I experience as a graduate assistant and video coordinator at Tulsa from 2013-15. There, Martin was a part of the Danny Manning-led 2014 Conference USA Champions staff and also worked under head coach Frank Haith.

As an undergraduate, Martin served as a men's basketball manager at the University of Kentucky under head coach John Calipari. During Martin's tenure with the Wildcats, the team reached the Elite 8 on three occasions, the Final Four on two occasions and Martin served as the head manager of the 2012 National Championship team.

In addition to his duties with the men's basketball program, Martin served as captain of the University of Kentucky Ethics Debate team from 2009-2011. Under his direction, Kentucky claimed its first-ever Regional Championship and national appearance in the team's history.

Martin received his bachelors from the University of Kentucky in 2012 and obtained his master's in education from the University of Tulsa in 2015.

Off the hardwood, Martin also is involved in a prison ministry project – "Against the Grain" – where he serves as a volunteer teacher of the "180 Project."

A 2007 graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee, Martin and his fiancé Avens Ridgeway reside in St. Joseph.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reported that the contract is worth $2,297,500 fully guaranteed, though only about $1 million will count against the Chiefs’ salary cap.

According to the source, Robinson drew interest on the open market. General manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs, however, remained focused on bringing him back and kept the lines of communications open before eventually agreeing to terms.

Chiefs re-sign WR Demarcus Robinson

ALBANY, New York - Northwest Missouri State University sophomore guard Trevor Hudgins was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association 2020 Men's Basketball All-America Teams that were voted on by the NCAA Division II members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) led the nation with a 53.8 three-point field goal percentage (105-of-197, while averaging 19.6 points, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the No. 1-ranked Bearcats. Hudgins earned MIAA and D2CCA Central Region player of the years honors after helping lead the Bearcats to a 31-1 overall record.

Hudgins was joined on the first team by Jordan Floyd (King University, Andrew Sischo (Daemen, Qua Grant (West Texas A&amp;M) and Brett Hanson (Florida Southern).

ALBANY, New York - Northwest Missouri State University sophomore guard Trevor Hudgins was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association 2020 Men's Basketball All-America Teams that were voted on by the NCAA Division II members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) led the nation with a 53.8 three-point field goal percentage (105-of-197, while averaging 19.6 points, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game for the No. 1-ranked Bearcats. The Kansas City Chiefs have lost Blake Bell to free agency as the Dallas Cowboys have signed the former Chiefs tight end to a one-year deal. 

The Wichita, Kansas native spent just one season in KC as he signed as a free agent last year.  Bell did start seven games last season and had eight receptions on 15 targets for 67 yards. He caught his first touchdown pass with the Chiefs during their divisional playoff win over Houston and added one catch in Super Bowl LIV against San Francisco.

For his career, Bell has 38 receptions for 424 yards as he played for the Chiefs, Jaguars, Vikings and 49ers.  He was drafted in the fourth round by San Francisco in 2015 out of Oklahoma.

HOUSTON (AP) —Fred “Curly” Neal, the dribbling wizard who entertained millions with the Harlem Globetrotters for parts of three decades, has died. He was 77.

The Globetrotters said Neal died in his home outside of Houston on Thursday morning.

“We have lost one of the most genuine human beings the world has ever known,” Globetrotters general manager Jeff Munn said&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Globies/status/1243257947481833478?s=20">in a statement on Twitter</a>. “Curly’s basketball skill was unrivaled by most, and his warm heart and huge smile brought joy to families worldwide.”

Neal played for the Globetrotters from 1963-85, appearing in more than 6,000 games in 97 countries for the exhibition team known for its combination of comedy and athleticism. He became one of five Globetrotters to have his jersey retired when his No. 22 was lifted to the rafters during a special ceremony at Madison Square Garden in 2008.

Neal was a crowd favorite with his trademark shaved head, infectious smile and ability to dribble circles around would-be defenders. He was a key player during the Globetrotters' most popular era in the ‘70s and ’80s, appearing on TV shows and specials like “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “Love Boat” and "Gilligan's Island."

Neal and the Globetrotters also appeared in numerous TV commercials, episodes of “Scooby-Doo” and had their own cartoon series.

Neal was a star high school player in Greensboro, North Carolina, and led Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title after averaging 23 points per game as a senior. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in a 2008 class that included North Carolina coach Roy Williams.

Neal also was inducted into the Globetrotters' Legends ring in 1993 and continued to make appearances for them as an “Ambassador of Goodwill.”

JOSEPH – Missouri Western head men's basketball coach Sundance Wicks has announced his resignation to join the men's basketball coaching staff at the University of Wyoming. Wicks will join new head coach Jeff Linder's staff at Wyoming after two seasons leading the Griffons.

"This is bitter sweet. Leaving a place you love dearly for the place you were raised and call home is as hard a decision as I have ever made," Wicks said. "Wyoming has always been my Graceland and it is a dream to connect my family back home with the profession I love in the state I grew up in. The hardest part is knowing I won't be getting to work again with our amazing young men and the staff we assembled. However, I know that this basketball program is in a better place than when we found it and the future is bright.

"It was an honor to share in creating this culture and building this program back up to where it is now. The returning players know how to change their best daily and are now player led by the sacrifices they have made. A program and a team is never about one person but about the heart that lives on through its collective pride."

"I will forever be grateful for Dr. Josh Looney, President Wilson and past President Dr. Vartabedian for the entrusting me with my first opportunity to lead a program. I can never thank all the administration and coaches in the athletic department enough for the friendship, late night talks and leadership examples. I learned something new every single day. In two seasons, Wicks turned around a once proud program at Missouri Western. His first Griffon team doubled its win total from the previous season and his 2019-20 team improved by six wins over his first season to finish&nbsp;18-14 overall, 13-6 in the MIAA with a fourth place finish in the conference standings and an MIAA Championship semifinal appearance. Wicks' second season brought the most wins for the program in a decade; most MIAA wins in 18 years; highest MIAA finish in 10 years; longest home win streak (11) in 17 years; most home wins in 14 years; and a program-record 305 made 3-point field goals in a season. In his two years at MWSU, Wicks had six players named All-MIAA including the program's first-ever MIAA Freshman of the Year (Will Eames, 2020) and first, first team All-MIAA and NABC All-District selection (Tyrell Carroll, 2020) in 14 years.

"Two years ago, we set out on a mission to find a leader who could re-connect our community with Missouri Western men's basketball, pack the Fieldhouse again, ignite pride in Griffon fans and serve the city of St. Joseph," said MWSU Vice President for Intercollege Athletics Dr. Josh Looney. "Under Coach Wicks, we have seen a massive program shift in 24 months and are in position to sustain this momentum thanks to the young men Coach Wicks has brought into this program and a community that has gotten behind this vision. We will continue to make St. Joseph proud. Sundance has certainly done that, and we are incredibly appreciative for his leadership."

Wicks went 30-32 overall in his two seasons at Missouri Western and 19-19 in the MIAA. A search for the sixth head coach of Griffon men's basketball will begin immediately.

Sundance Wicks steps down as MWSU men's basketball coach

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced today that Northwest Missouri State University head coach Ben McCollum is the 2020 NABC Division II Coach of the Year presented by Wilson.

McCollum has become a regular as NABC Division II Coach of the Year, winning the honor in three of the last four seasons. The Bearcats finished the season with a 31-1 record and were ranked first in the final NABC Division II poll. McCollum won his sixth MIAA Coach of the Year honor as Northwest closed out its season on 23-game win streak. Northwest surpassed the 30-win mark for the fifth time in program history (third time in four years) and the 20-win mark for the ninth consecutive season.

"I would like to accept this award on behalf of my players who deserve the national accolades," McCollum said. "I am humbled and thankful to be able to coach the best players in the country. McCollum equaled Cal State Bakersfield's Pat Douglass for the most NABC Division II Coach of the Year awards with three. Douglass captured his awards in 1993, 1994 and 1997. McCollum has been the NABC Coach of the Year in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Bearcats' McCollum named NABC Division II Coach of the Year

The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed defensive tackle Mike&nbsp;Pennel to a one-year contract, his agent announced Tuesday night.

Pennel&nbsp;signed with the Chiefs about halfway through the 2019 season and appeared in eight regular season games.  He recorded 24 tackles and one sack during the regular season and then started two of the team's three playoffs games.

Pennel&nbsp;was undrafted in 2014 and signed with the Green Bay Packers as a free agent out of Division II Colorado State-Pueblo.  He spent three seasons with the team, appearing in 37 total games before being claimed off waivers by the New York Jets.&nbsp;Pennel spent the next two seasons with New York, appearing in all 32 games and making 10 starts.

Chiefs re-sign DL Mike Pennel to one-year contract

TOKYO (AP) — The Tokyo Olympics have been officially postponed until 2021. The International Olympic Committee along with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and local organizers have decided that the Tokyo Games cannot go ahead as scheduled this year because of the coronavirus outbreak. The games were scheduled to begin July 24.

Abe said after his telephone talks with Bach that he requested a postponement of about one year “taking into consideration the current circumstances” and to secure an environment in which athletes can perform in their best conditions and the sense of safety and security for the audience.

Abe held telephone talks with Bach after the IOC said it would make a decision on the Tokyo Games over the next four weeks.

Griffons' Tyrell Carroll named 2nd Team NABC All-District

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed XFL quarterback Jordan Ta'amu to a contract on Monday according to his agent, Kenny Zuckerman.

Ta'amu played for the St. Louis BattleHawks and he led the XFL in completion percentage and touchdowns.  Ta'amu was the third-rated QB in the league as he completed 72% of his passes for 1,050 yards and 12 touchdowns in five games.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed XFL quarterback Jordan Ta'amu to a contract on Monday according to his agent, Kenny Zuckerman.Ta'amu played for the St. Louis BattleHawks and he led the XFL in completion percentage and touchdowns. The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced today the 2020 NABC Coaches' Division II All-District teams and coaches, recognizing the best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes and coaches in the division.  Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division II, these 88 student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. 

Northwest Missouri State's Ryan Hawkins and Trevor Hudgins each were named to the Central Distric First Team. Bearcat head coach Ben McCollum garnered his third career NABC Central District Coach of the Year honor. He previously won the award in 2017 and 2019.

Hudgins (Manhattan, Kansas) led the nation in three-point field goal percentage (53.3% - 105-of-197). Hudgins averaged 19.6 points per game, 6.0 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game Hudgins has already earned first-team all-MIAA, first-team D2CCA all-region, D2CCA region player of the year, MIAA Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the 2020 MIAA Tournament. Hudgins had 18 20-point scoring games to go along with four 30-point scoring contests. He collected the school's first triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Fort Hays State (Jan. 25). His 626 points this season ranks as the sixth-most for a Bearcat in a single season. His 191 assists in 2019-2020 ranks as the second-best total in Bearcat history behind his mark of 203 set last season.

Hawkins set the Bearcat single-game scoring record with 44 against Southern Nazarene on Nov. 2. The Atlantic, Iowa, native was selected as the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, while also being tabbed a first-team all-MIAA performer. Hawkins poured in 726 points in the 2019-2020 season, which ranks as the third-most points ever scored by a Bearcat in a single season. He is one of only four Bearcats to ever score 700 or more points in a season. 

McCollum guided the Bearcats to a 31-1 record, the MIAA regular season championship and the MIAA postseason tournament crown in 2019-2020. Northwest has won seven consecutive MIAA regular season titles and five straight MIAA tournament crowns. The Bearcats led the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 45.7% (359-of-785). The Bearcats were ranked No. 1 in the final NABC and D2CCA national polls in 2019-2020.

Northwest's McCollum, Hawkins & Hudgins earn NABC All-District honors

INDIANAPOLIS – Kansas senior Udoka Azubuike and sophomore Devon Dotson were each named to the 2020 U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America Team, the USBWA announced Monday. Azubuike was a first-team honoree, while Dotson received second-team recognition.

Azubuike and Dotson give Kansas a USBWA All-America selection each of the last four seasons. Last year, Dedric Lawson was a third-team selection, while Devonte’ Graham was a first-team choice in 2018. In 2017, Frank Mason III was a first-team honoree and the Oscar Robertson Trophy recipient as the USBWA’s national player of the year. In KU head coach Bill Self’s 17 seasons at Kansas, there have been 14 Jayhawks named to USBWA All-America teams (see below).

Azubuike, a senior from Delta, Nigeria, led Division I in field goal percentage at 74.8%, which helped his career percentage of 74.4% break the all-time Division I field goal percentage record of UCF’s Tacko Fall (74.0%). Azubuike led the Big 12 in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and double-doubles (15) and was second in the conference for blocked shots at 2.6 per game. A unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection who was named Big 12 Player of the Year, Azubuike was the only player in the conference to average a double-double (13.7 ppg, 10.5 rpg).

Dotson led the Big 12 in scoring at 18.1 ppg, steals (2.1) and free throws made (142). The Charlotte, N.C., sophomore guard ranked among the Big 12 leaders in 20-point games (second at 9, field goal percentage (second at 46.8, free throw percentage (fifth at 83.0, assists (fifth at 4.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fifth at 1.7). Dotson became just the fifth Jayhawk to lead the Big 12 in scoring joining Drew Gooden in 2002, Wayne Simien in 2005, Frank Mason III in 2017 and Dedric Lawson in 2019. This season, Dotson was an All-Big 12 First Team (unanimous selection, a Bob Cousy Award Point Guard of the Year Award Finalist, USBWA All-District VI. He has amassed 986 career points in only two seasons at Kansas.
