The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat women's golf squad had five student-athletes honored by the MIAA for their effort in the classroom and on the golf course.

The MIAA announced its Academic Awards for the 2019-2020 women's golf season. More than 40 women's golf student-athletes from league schools were recognized for their classroom achievements.

To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The individual must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. Five Northwest women's golfers earn MIAA academic honors

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Twelve Mizzou senior student-athletes across six spring sports have opted to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility and return to Columbia next fall. On March 30, the NCAA Division I council voted to allow schools to provide spring-sport student-athletes an additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility following the cancellation of seasons in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mizzou Athletics elected to pursue providing that option for qualified spring-sport student-athletes. Twenty-one student-athletes were eligible to compete for an additional season, and 12 of those 21 have chosen to use that option and return to their respective teams.

“We look forward to watching these Mizzou student-athletes who had their 2020 spring seasons cut short by COVID-19 returning to finish out their collegiate careers the right way next spring,” said Mizzou Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. “The NCAA made the right decision for these young men and women to receive their year back, and I’m grateful that several of them have elected to take advantage of this opportunity. We wish those moving on from Mizzou great success as they enter the next chapter of their lives.”

Missouri athletics launches Health Care and Frontline Heroes ticket program

MANHATTAN, Kansas - In an effort to increase convenience and provide fans with more options, K-State Athletics and the Ahearn Fund announced today that it is shifting to digital season tickets, including mobile and print-at-home, beginning with the 2020-21 athletic season.

Moving away from the traditional printed ticket allows for K-State to extend the season-ticket payment deadline to closer to the start of each season during these uncertain times resulting from COVID-19, as well as eliminating shipping delays. The football season ticket deadline has been extended to June 1 from the original April 17 deadline. Fans will have the opportunity to choose either print-at-home or mobile during the online seat upgrade process in June. Fans who do not participate will receive print-at-home tickets which can easily be converted to mobile so that they are always easily accessible in a smart phone wallet. Mobile tickets are also easily transferable to friends and family if fans cannot attend all games.

“Making this ticketing transition provides several advantages to our fans, and is something we have talked about doing for some time,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “Combined with obvious safety improvements by reducing touching concerns and an industry-wide shift from traditional tickets, we felt this was the most appropriate time to move this direction.”

New digital ticketing options for Wildcat fans began to be implemented several years ago, including mobile single-game tickets, mobile tickets for students and last year basketball ticket purchasers were offered mobile single game parking passes. The new digital season tickets will also be implemented for K-State’s five additional ticketed sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball.

Fans who purchased football season tickets in the general seating bowl and view level will have the option to select print-at-home or mobile tickets which would be sent to their primary e-mail address, while those with loge, club, or suite tickets will have the option to select mobile tickets - sent to their primary e-mail address.

Parking passes will continue to receive printed passes, and those will be mailed to fans’ primary mailing address.

Current season ticket holders are encouraged to verify their current email addresses by logging into their online account at kstatesports.com/buytickets, reaching out to the K-State Athletics ticket office at 1 (800) 221-CATS 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or by emailing tickets@kstatesports.com. K-State athletics announces move to digital ticketing 

Columbia, Mo. – Three Mizzou athletics women’s programs, basketball, tennis and cross country, were honored Tuesday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with Public Recognition Awards for their Academic Progress Rates (APR) during the 2018-19 academic year. All three programs registered perfect APR marks of 1,000.

“Academic success is a critical component of Mizzou Athletics’ Win it Right mission, and these awards demonstrate a commitment to classroom excellence by our student-athletes, coaches and Mizzou Made staff,” said Mizzou Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. “We are incredibly grateful for the critical role Mizzou’s faculty plays in the education of our 550 student-athletes and appreciate the positive learning environments they provide to all Mizzou students.”

It marks the fifth-straight year Mizzou women’s tennis has received an APR award, while women’s basketball garnered its second-straight (and sixth overall) award and cross country earned its first honor since 2005-06 (and fourth overall). Mizzou Athletics has now earned 51 all-time NCAA Public Recognition Awards in 13 different sports over the honor program’s 15-year history. 

The Southeastern Conference’s 14-members earned a record 65 2018-19 Public Recognition Awards for APR success.

Sixteen of Mizzou’s 18 programs in which APR is registered either equaled or improved their multi-year APR score year over year from 2017-18 to 2018-19, led by double-digit increases in baseball (959 in 2017-18 to 974 in 2018-19) and women’s cross country’s (989 in 2017-18 to 1,000 in 2018-19). Three Mizzou women’s teams honored by NCAA for academic achievement

Four Nebraska athletic programs have been honored by the NCAA for high academic achievement. The Husker Rifle, Bowling, Women’s Gymnastics and Women’s Tennis teams received public recognition as part of the NCAA’s Division I Academic Performance Program.

Nebraska has a long history of academic success and achievement.  Nebraska leads the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports and all divisions with 338 all-time honorees. Last fall, Nebraska posted a 93 percent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR, which for the seventh consecutive year, was the highest in school history.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  – Jordan Roundtree of the Mizzou Women's Basketball team and Connor Flynn from the Mizzou Wrestling program have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Missouri, the Southeastern Conference announced on Monday. One male and one female from each of the SEC's 14 institutions were nominated for the scholarship, and the overall recipients of the award will be announced in late May.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes. Each year, the SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Missouri Western Charity Golf Classic rescheduled for August

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Football League announced on Thursday the regular season schedule for the 2020 season. The Chiefs will be featured in five primetime contests, including two nationally televised games at Arrowhead Stadium.

“The releasing of the 2020 NFL schedule reinforces each year that we have the opportunity to compete against some of the great teams in this league,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said. “I know our organization and fans get excited for these challenges. We look forward to raising last year’s Super Bowl championship banner and all that comes with defending our title in the 2020 season.”

Kansas City will kick off its quest to defend its Super Bowl title on the NFL’s opening night against the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 10. The contest will be a rematch of last year’s AFC Divisional playoff game where the Chiefs overcame a 24-0 deficit to defeat the Texans 51-31. Additionally, in celebration of the club’s victory in Super Bowl LIV, the team will raise its championship banner in front of Chiefs Kingdom.

In Week 2, the Chiefs will kick off divisional play in search of a fifth-straight AFC West title, traveling to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in their new stadium on Sept. 20. Kansas City is 22-2 against the AFC West over the last four seasons and is currently on a seven-game win streak against the division. In Reid’s seven seasons with the Chiefs, the club is 32-10 against the AFC West (12-2 vs. LVR, 11-3 vs. LAC, 9-5 vs. DEN).

NFL releases 2020 Kansas City Chiefs schedule

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The NCAA struck back at the University of Kansas and its men's basketball program Thursday, calling five Level I violations that are alleged to have occurred “egregious” and arguing that they undermine and threaten" college athletics.

In the latest in a series of back-and-forth filings, the NCAA reiterated in a 92-page response its claim that Adidas representatives were acting as boosters when two of them — T.J. Gassnolo and Jim Gatto — helped to arrange payments to prospective recruits. Those transactions became a central point in a wide-ranging FBI probe into college basketball that has ensnared Kansas, Louisville and several other high-profile programs.

“The institution secured significant recruiting and competitive advantages by committing alleged Level I men's basketball violations,” the NCAA said. “The institution, in taking its defiant posture in this case, is indifferent to how alleged violations may have adversely impacted other NCAA institutions who acted in compliance with NCAA legislation.”

Officials from Kansas have said they agree with the NCAA that Gassnola made payments to family members and handlers of two players, Billy Preston and Silvio De Sousa. But coach Bill Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend said they were unaware of the transactions, backing up a statement Gassnola made during sworn testimony.

But the NCAA countered with video and text documents that tie Self, Townsend and another assistant coach, Jerrance Howard, to Gassnola within the past five years. The governing body also pointed out that Adidas paid about $250,000 for an induction party for Self when he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

This evidence, the NCAA argues, is “overwhelming factual information that demonstrates Adidas, Gassnola and Gatto promoted the institutions interests and, therefore, are boosters.”

“The NCAA enforcement staff’s reply does not in any way change the University of Kansas’ position that the allegations brought against our men’s basketball program are simply baseless and littered with false representations,” the school said. in a statement Thursday. “As the federal trial proved, Adidas employees intentionally concealed impermissible payments from the university and its coaching staff. The university has never denied these impermissible payments were made.

“For the NCAA enforcement staff to allege that the university should be held responsible for these payments is a distortion of the facts and a gross misapplication of NCAA bylaws and case precedent.”

The initial notice of allegations was filed in September, and Kansas officials had 90 days to respond, a deadline that was extended to February. The NCAA enforcement staff then had 60 days to file the reply that came out this week.

(AP) — The NCAA struck back at the University of Kansas and its men's basketball program Thursday, calling five Level I violations that are alleged to have occurred “egregious” and arguing that they undermine and threaten" college athletics.In the latest in a series of back-and-forth filings, the NCAA reiterated in a 92-page response its claim that Adidas representatives were acting as boosters when two of them — T.J. Gassnolo and Jim Gatto — helped to arrange payments to prospective recruits. Those transactions became a central point in a wide-ranging FBI probe into college basketball that has ensnared Kansas, Louisville and several other high-profile programs.“The institution secured significant recruiting and competitive advantages by committing alleged Level I men's basketball violations,” the NCAA said. “The institution, in taking its defiant posture in this case, is indifferent to how alleged violations may have adversely impacted other NCAA institutions who acted in compliance with NCAA legislation.”Officials from Kansas have said they agree with the NCAA that Gassnola made payments to family members and handlers of two players, Billy Preston and Silvio De Sousa. But coach Bill Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend said they were unaware of the transactions, backing up a statement Gassnola made during sworn testimony.But the NCAA countered with video and text documents that tie Self, Townsend and another assistant coach, Jerrance Howard, to Gassnola within the past five years. NCAA calls alleged Kansas basketball violations "egregious"

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Men's Basketball inked
junior college transfer Ed Chang, head coach Cuonzo Martin announced Thursday.
Chang is a 6-foot-8 versatile forward from Papillion, Nebraska, with the
ability to stretch the floor.

Chang
spent the 2019-20 campaign at Salt Lake Community College, where he helped lead
a deep squad to a 29-4 record, a perfect Scenic West Conference mark, a Scenic
West Conference title and a No. 4 overall seed in the NJCAA National Tournament
that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chang is one of seven SLCC
teammates to land at Division I programs this spring.

"Ed
can stretch the floor with his shooting,” Martin said. “He has great size and
length, and the ability to play multiple positions. He is a skilled
shot-blocker for his size. He’ll be a great fit to our program on both ends of
the floor when he gets to campus.”

Chang shot 41.4
percent from 3-point range and 42.8 percent from the floor at Salt Lake,
averaging 8.2 points and 3.6 rebounds on an experienced, talented roster. The
forward reached double figures 10 times, including a 23-point outburst against
Colorado Northwest, in which he drained six 3-pointers on 12 attempts.

"I
chose Mizzou because of the basketball culture Coach Martin has created there,”
Chang said. “Coach Martin genuinely cares about making us all better players
and people, and I wanted to come be a part of that.”

Chang, who did not
play basketball as a senior at Seattle’s Garland High School, was the No. 1
player in the state of Nebraska as a high school junior before relocating to
the Evergreen state. He was tabbed a four-star recruit by ESPN after earning
back-to-back All-Nebraska selections. Chang averaged 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds,
4.0 blocks and 1.2 steals as a junior at Papillion-La Vista. During his junior
season, he reached the 1,000-point mark for his career and a Class A runner-up
state finish. He averaged 15.9 points and 9.5 rebounds as a sophomore en route
to Omaha World-Herald All-Metro honors and became the first sophomore to land
on the all-state team in some five seasons.

signed with San Diego State out of high school and appeared in 13 games for the
Aztecs during the 2018-19 season. He shot 37.5 percent from deep as a freshman.

years of eligibility remaining at Mizzou.

Mizzou men's basketball signs junior college transfer Ed Chang

The competitive playing surface for the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat soccer team is getting a new look and feel with the installation of AstroTurf for the 2020 season.

Mid-America Sports Construction of Lee's Summit, Missouri, is handling the installation of the AstroTurf product after completing a state-approved bid process.

The new surface will give Northwest a field that meets the NCAA minimum size requirement and allows it to fix significant elevation issues in the northwest corner of the field.

Northwest has played on a natural grass surface at Bearcat Pitch since the inception of the women's soccer program in 1999. The previous grass surface had unsuitable subsoils that created unplayable conditions with minimal amounts of rainfall, which forced Northwest to move home games the past few seasons. It also led to continual adjustments to practice and conditioning sessions for the Bearcat soccer program.

The new surface will provide many efficiencies for Bearcat soccer. It provides additional green space for student recreation, club sports, intramurals and other outdoor intercollegiate programs. It will allow opportunities for partnerships with Maryville R-II School District and the city of Maryville.

Revenue generation will also be more readily available as the new pitch can serve as a rental to other intercollegiate institutions, hosting other games and tournaments and camp or clinic opportunities that were not viable options in the past because of usage and weather threats.

Bearcat third-year head coach Marc Gordon said the artificial surface will provide a variety of assets for the women's soccer program.

"The addition of a new turf pitch will enhance our Bearcat soccer program in several ways," Gordon said. "Mostly, the team will have the ability to utilize the surface following heavy rains. This commitment will help in the recruitment of future Bearcat soccer players. The new surface will also provide the required field dimensions to host NCAA tournament matches."

Northwest Director of Athletics Andy Peterson said the project demonstrates the importance of the soccer program to the University and surrounding communities.

"This is obviously a big improvement for our soccer program," Peterson said. "This is also a win for our department and University. Soccer is a growing sport across the nation and especially in our region, and we hope that this pitch can drive involvement, engagement and performance from a variety of stakeholders. The University-wide impact of having this artificial turf surface for our spring sports, intramurals, club sports and general recreation will be significant."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA announced it has partnered with the U.S.Council For Athletes Health (USCAH) to provide the conference office with athletic healthcare education, compliance resources, and campus health and safety programs and tools for its member institutions. The Association becomes the first NCAA Division II organization to enter into a strategic partnership with USCAH.

During the next few months, the MIAA will have the opportunity, through a series of education, programming, and compliance activities to earn "USCAH Preferred Status", a designation that certifies the Association's commitment to ongoing evaluation and education for health and well-being.

St. Joseph Sports Inc. held its annual banquet virtually on Wednesday to honor outstanding male and female scholar-athletes in the city.

Bishop LeBlond's Juliann Smith is the female winner this season and Central's Cole Hopkins won the male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Smith and Hopkins were chosen by the St. Joseph Sports Inc. Board of Directors as there was one male and one female nominee from each of the five St. Joseph High Schools.  Each winner receives a $1,000 scholarship.

The other nominees each receive a $500 scholarship, and those nominees include Benton's Jadynn Peters and Hunter Armstrong, Bishop LeBlond's Kanon Sumpter, Central's Kacey Duvall, Lafayette's Tarrin Deayon and Ethan Lowe, and St. Joseph Christian's Jacqueline Carlson and Brent Boyd.

Criteria for being a nominee includes the demonstration of academic excellence with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average, outstanding athletic performance, dedication to good citizenship and active involvement in extracurricular activities.

Verduzco and the Griffons were 8-15 when their season was canceled but they had won four of their last five and they had just swept Rogers State to even their MIAA record at 3-3.  Verduzco had a seven game hit streak when the season was cut short as he finished with a .239 average and three RBI.

The Big 12 has become the first Power Five conference to say it will hold its football media days virtually.

Big 12 coaches and athletic directors made the decision Wednesday during a virtual spring meeting that replaced their annual gathering in Scottsdale, Arizona.

About 500 media members are usually credentialed to attend Big 12 media days, which were scheduled to be held July 21-22 at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and the site of the league’s championship game.

The online media days will likely be held those same dates, though that was tentative.

Big 12 football media days going virtual due to coronavirus

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Cam Erving has signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

Terms were not announced but it will be a one-year deal.

Erving spent the last three years with the Chiefs after they traded with the Browns for the former first round draft pick out of Florida State.  He played in 13 games and made four starts during the 2017 season and Kansas City signed him to an extension.

Over the last two years, Erving played in 27 games and made 21 starts but the Chiefs did not pick up the 2020 option on his contract and that made him a free agent.
