He was born March 24, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of the late Vernie &amp; Charles Hovey. He worked as a House Painter. He served in the Army and is veteran of World War II.

Harold Leon “Doc” Childress passed away on his birthday, September 27, 2020 at 88 years old at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Born on September 27, 1932 in Hendrickson, Missouri, he grew up in neighboring Piedmont, where he graduated from Piedmont High School and was the first baseman on the baseball team. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in the minor leagues at age 17. He played one summer, but then went back to school, where he played both baseball and basketball. Doc attended Missouri Baptist College where he led the basketball team in scoring for two years and was elected to the All-State team. He transferred to the University of Missouri in Columbia where he majored in pre-med and then received his doctorate degree at Southern University of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the medical vision clinic. He bought an optometry practice in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and married his first wife, Sandra Savage, in 1960. They had two daughters, Kelly and Lisa, and moved to St. Joseph, MO.

Doc practiced optometry for 53 years. He was Missouri Western University’s eye and vision consultant for the athletic department and taught athletes how to improve performance through vision and was rewarded by inducting him into the Missouri Western Hall of Fame. He got remarried on June 24, 1981 to Marge Hatten and they were married for 39 years.

Doc loved hunting and shooting sporting clays, the most difficult shooting sport in the world. He started shooting in 1989 in the veterans’ division and made Team USA 1991. In 1992, the World Championship was in Vermont, where he tied for the bronze medal and won in a shoot-off with three other shooters. He was the first American to win a medal in world competition. He won three Missouri State championships; two SGAs in the 1990s and even one when he was 70 years old. Doc was in “Outdoor Life” magazine’s All American Sporting Clays for ten straight years. He was the first shooter inducted into the Missouri Sporting Clays Association and is the only sporting clays shooter inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He is also in the Water Fowlers Hall of Fame for his expertise in shooting ducks, geese and doves.

Doc was preceded in death by his father, Carl Patrick Childress (who played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals) and his mother, Jewell Francis Moore. He is survived by his wife, Marge (Marge Nyren Hatten), his daughters Kelly Childress and Lisa Irons (Bill), his stepsons Rick Hatten (Dana), Greg Hatten (Janet), Ted Hatten (Lana) and his stepdaughter, Nancy Hatten Gardner. He has fifteen grandchildren: Stephanie Lincoln, Andrew Hatten, Emily Alford, Aaron Hatten, Mitchell Hatten, Daniel Hatten, Elizabeth Punzo, Sarah Weaver, Katie Brown, Alaynna Gardner, James Gardner, Truman Gardner, Jonah Hatten, Asa Hatten and Sam Hatten. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.

She was born on December 15, 1944, in St. Joseph to Charles Leroy and Lavita (Robertson) Anthony.

She married Ralph Roach Sr. on July 30, 1967. He survives of the home.

She earned an associate’s degree in child development. She was a childcare director for more than 40 years.

Linda enjoyed spending time with her family – her family was her life. She also was a two-time breast cancer survivor.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Donna Addington.

She graduated from Central High School in 1950. The majority of her career was as a bookkeeper, 30+ years for Spartan Sporting Goods. Beverly valued most in life family, church and friends.

Beverly was married to James “Jim” B Shipley in 1951, they later divorced. They had two children, a son, James Kent Shipley (Lenore) and a daughter, Karen J “KJ” Langlais. She was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren, Hollie Schmidt (Jody), Sarah Robinson (Dustin), Chris Langlais (Jill), Adam Shipley (Sheri), Hannah Montgomery (Brandon), Sherrie Klover (Henry), Bill Gimse (Beth), Mike Fitzgerald Jr (Karla). However, her favorite role was as ‘Mimi’ to 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was also a loving aunt to Bruce Smith, Shelly Troester (Kent) and Sherri Smith along with numerous other nieces and nephews.

Beverly was a lifelong member of Wyatt Park Christian Church where she was actively involved in many ministries and groups throughout her life. Beverly was also an active member of the Class of 1950 Alumni group.

Beverly left this life on September 25, 2020. We are grateful for LaVerna/St Joseph Senior Living and AseraCare Hospice for their incredible love and care. Beverly leaves behind a legacy of love for family and friends as well as her compassion for others. She was born May 22, 1927 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Laura and Alva Cogdill. She was the owner operator of H.B. Catering for many years, and a member of the Faith United Baptist Church. 

Helen was preceded in death by husband, John I Brown Sr., parents, daughter, Sandra Donelson, 3 brothers, Alva, Ollie, and Paul Cogdill, 3 sisters, Alpha Crockett, Ruby Nunnery, and Wilma Heller.

Floyd "Duane" Hendrix, 74, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2020 at a local health care facility. 

He was born September 9, 1946 in St. Joseph, son of Lorna and William Hendrix. He graduated from Benton High School. He enjoyed watching and attending sporting events and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. 

Duane was preceded in death by father, William Floyd Hendrix, mother, Lorna Helen Hendrix, brothers, Tommy Hendrix and Kenney Hendrix, sisters, Dolores McCray and Patricia McEnaney.

He was born October 15, 1924 near Cosby, Missouri to Henry H. and Clara C. (Schneider) Bunse.

On December 1, 1951, he married his wife of 68 years, Laveta Ingram, who survives the home.

Jewell was a 1942 graduate of Savannah High School. He grew up on the farm and operated a Grade A diary farm until 1983 when he moved to St. Joseph.

Jewell was a lifetime member of Zion United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading, wood working, stained glass, and being a dad, grandpa, and great grandpa.

Jewell was preceded in death by his daughter, Karel McDonald; parents; sisters, Ruth Lind and Velma Rudolph.

He was born June 22, 1930 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Mary and Ferris Wolfe. He worked at Western Dairy, Seitz, Monfort Pork, and he also owned &amp; operated Hadley Bar III Cafe in the Stockyards Exchange Building. He enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals, working in his garden, and helping people. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. 

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Wolfe, his parents, five brothers and five sisters.

She was born March 8, 1934 in St. Joseph, daughter of Helen and Floyd Farris. She attended the Convent of Sacred Heart and Platte College. She married Pete Jimenez, and together they had their 4 daughters. She later married Charles Fountain. Pat worked at various offices within the Buchanan County Courthouse, and also on occasion at Joe Opticians since she was 19 years old. She loved to cook, especially Mexican food for her family and friends. Pat had put together a cookbook of her recipes for everyone to enjoy. In her youth, she began playing the organ at Holy Rosary, which she continued to do so for many years. She was also a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph. 

Preceding her in death is her 1st husband, Pete Jimenez, 2nd husband, Charles Fountain, father, Floyd Robert Farris, mother, Helen Forestine Farris, brothers, Robert Farris and Louis Farris, and her aunt &amp; uncle, Henry &amp; Virginia McNutt. 

Survivors include, daughters, Cathy (Phil) Pinion of St Joseph, Rita (Arnie) Lindsay of Iowa Falls, IA, Theresa Hoelscher of Lake Ozark, MO, and Barb (Ted) English of Florence, AZ, sister, Mary Ellen Woodcock of St. Joseph, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter, and 5 nieces and two nephews.

She was born May 8, 1946 in DeKalb, Missouri to Russell and Lois (Lawrence) Downing.

Myrna assisted George Glore with the setup of the Glore Psychiatric Museum at the St. Joseph State Hospital from which she retired after more than 30 years.

She enjoyed bowling, dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She always made people laugh and was the life of the party. Myrna was loved by many.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harold L. Hopkins; and her parents.

Clara Patricia “Patti” Burri, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

She was born December 27, 1935 to Truman and Bernice (Reardon) Wilson.

Patti married Charlie Burri June 11, 1956. He survives of the home.

She was a 1953 graduate of Central High School. She graduated from St. Joseph Junior College and later Northwest Missouri State with a master’s in education. Patti taught at Edison Elementary, Hall Elementary and was a parent-teacher coordinator.

Patti was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church for over 50 years, PEO Chapter ED, Missouri Western Women, and is a member of Missouri Western State University Ambassadors Hall of Fame.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William Jewell Wilson.

Additional survivors include children, Brett Burri (Erin), Craig Burri (Shelly) and Carla Cole; grandchildren Justin, Kirsten, Kayla (Lexie), Spencer, Jackson, Joshua, Nicholas, Samuel, Kaitlyn, Reece and Avery; and one great grandchild, Poppy.

The family can never say thank you enough for the love and care Lori Ashworth gave to our mother as her caregiver. She and Greg are now family.

Alvin R. "Russ" Manley 61 passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 18, 2020 at a local hospital.

Russ was born on August 24, 1959 in Independence MO, to the late Alvin and Shirley Manley.

At the time of his passing he was employed at St. Joseph Beverage and had 17 years of service with the company.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends, outdoor grilling and was an avid fan of &nbsp;the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mr. Manley was preceded in death by his Parents, Sisters; Cindy Street and Terri Hunter, daughter; Amy Scarborough and granddaughter; Mareta Lynn Lyons.

Russ is survived by his companion; Hollie Thompson,&nbsp; her children; Lacie (Cameron) Lyons, Cristin (Corey) Myers, son; Christopher Manley, sisters; Penny (Jeff) Bell,&nbsp; Pam (Carl) Bryant and Hollie's father; Jim Wickam.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1:00 - 4:00 PM, Sunday, October 25, 2020 at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 4520 Mitchell Avenue in St. Joseph.

Connie Jean Davison, 66, of Savannah, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 with her daughters by her side.

She was born in St. Joseph, MO on March 13, 1954 to Corvan and Maxine (Brewer) Davison.

Connie was a jack of all trades and wasn't afraid to tell you what she was thinking, even if you didn't want to hear it.&nbsp; She was a fighter and fought until the very end doing things her way despite what everyone thought.

Connie is survived by her children, Tammy (Chris) Oliver, Savannah; Mindy (Travis) Goeringer, Omaha,NE; brothers, Larry (Hilda) Davison, Keith (Diane) Davison, Fillmore, MO; sister, Carolyn Davison, Savannah; nine grandchildren, Cassie, Kyler (Sky), Therynn, Hayleigh (Trevor), Ashleigh (Brian), Bryleigh and three great-grandchildren.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Shane and longtime partner, Melvin Bye.

Ms. Davison has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Norman Irvin Simpson, 82, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at his home.

Norman was born on May 26, 1938 in Sparks, Kansas to Robert and Mable (Orcutt) Simpson.

He served in the U.S. Army during Korea. Norman worked at Conagra for the flour mill department.

Norman married Rebekah Gray, she preceded him in death. He then married Janita NG. She survives of the home.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mildred Bradberry, brothers, Don, Fred, Harold and James Simpson.

John E. “Coffee John” Burns, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

He was born September 2, 1932 to James and Myrtle (Gilbert) Burns in Flandreau, South Dakota.

John married Velma Fern Brewer March 24, 1958.

He was a graduate of Lafayette High School. John proudly served in the US Army, during the Korean War and was discharged in 1963. He worked in maintenance at Dannon Mills and through to Farmland for 45 years, retiring in 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rodney Burns; sister, Juanita Carol Marie (Burns) Beaman.

Survivors include wife, Velma; daughter, Ronda Kamler; stepdaughter, Sheila Agee; grandchildren, Scott, Stephen, and Syndee Kamler, Jennifer and Robert Johnathan “RJ” Agee; great grandchildren, Sullivan, Lenox, Rigby, and Alice Kamler, Charlotte, and Robert “Robbie” Agee.

Survivors include four sons; Larry Rathmann, Jr, Atchison KS, Mark Carlson, Overland Park, KS, Mike Carlson, Great Bend, KS, and Sonny Berry, Lancaster, KS, three daughters; Jeanne Jenson, Arlington, KS, Joyce Irby, Rogue, KS and Karolyn Terrazas ,Victorville, CA a sister; Sandy Tull, Atchison, KS, twenty six grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Her parents, four brothers, Fred , Bill, Tom and John Portenier and two sisters, Helen Birkinsha and Patricia Ann Emery preceded her in death.

Jason Robert Tomlinson, 47, of Atchison, KS, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at his home.

Jason was born April 20, 1973 in Lincoln, NE, the son of John and Marge (Edwards) Tomlinson. He loved caring for children and worked as a Para Educator for USD 409 and for the Atchison YMCA as a Child Watch attendant. Jason truly enjoyed helping people and served on the boards for Project Atchison, Aimee’s Pennies For A Purpose and volunteered with the Salvation Army. He loved Husker football, fishing and spending time with family.

Jason married his true love, Margaret Feek on April 29, 2017 in Effingham, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his mother Marge Tomlinson, Lincoln, NE, a brother John (Lora) Tomlinson, Jr., Albuquerque, NM, a sister, Cheryl (Roger) Kapustka, Roca, NE, a sister in law, Stephany (Paul) Koci, Atchison, KS, twenty-two nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, a niece Aimee Snapp, and nephew Samuel Tomlinson.



He was born Feb. 4, 1978, in Ashland, Oregon, son of Edward Hamilton and Sandra (Bair) Eldredge. He worked as a Controls Engineer at Show-Me Industrial Controls, Inc. He enjoyed horror movies, attending horror conventions, tattoos especially his horror tattoo sleeve, collecting and shooting firearms, and making his own ammunition, hunting, fishing, communicating through his ham radio, and spending time with his family and grandson. 

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Edward; grandson, Dimitri; paternal grandparents; maternal grandparents, and nephew, Marcus Klepees. Survivors include: Fiance of 17 years Chrissy Coy; daughter, Bobbi Hart; grandson, Dante'; mother and stepfather, Sandra and Robert Eldredge; stepfather, Donald Patterson; sisters, Jennifer (Jeff) Klepees and Jamie (Scott) Logston; brothers, Donald Jr., Adam (Falynn,) and Toby (Angie) Patterson; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Darlene (Greene) Johansen, 89, of rural Robinson, passed into the presence of Christ on September 22, 2020, having been surrounded by family in recent days at Vintage Park at Hiawatha.&nbsp; She was born June 7, 1931.&nbsp;

Darlene is survived by two sons—Forest Robert Johansen, Jr. (Nance); Marlin Paul Johansen (Nancy); one daughter—Ruth Anne Prieb (Steve); 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Bob, two sons—Terrance Mark Johansen, and Kelly Donald Johansen; one grandson, Logan Johansen; and her brother David Greene.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 10 until 7 p.m. Friday where the family will be present later in the day.
