Leona Lilly Ann Ebling 84, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 26, 2021 at her home. 

She was born September 8, 1937 in Fillmore, MO, daughter of the late Leona and Johnnie Pettijohn. She graduated from Missouri Western State College. She worked at health care industry as a caregiver, and also worked at C.A.S.A. Leona was a member of Souls Harbor Pentecostal Church. Leona was very talented, she was an author of 2 novels, one on her life, the other a love story, she also wrote poetry, songs, and played the piano at Church. She will be sadly missed by her family and church family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Ebling Sr., granddaughter, Amanda Snethen Arnold, great granddaughter, Alia, seven brothers, Charles, James, Lester, Clyde, Ralph, John P, and Forrest, two sisters, Dolly Shaw, and Mary Ann Decker, and former daughter in law, Autumn Westcott. 

Survivors include, sons, Charles Ebling Jr. (Brandy Stringhan) Ebling Jr., John Ebling, and Walter (Terry) Ebling, daughters, Nancy Thompson, and Charlene Fay (Rev. Daniel Brown) Brown, brother Floyd Pettijohn, 24 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, former daughter in laws, Debbie&nbsp;

Elizabeth Ann Van Sickle 99, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 26, 2021 in Parkville, MO. 

She was born November 16, 1922 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Mayme (Kirschner) and Fred Conrad. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1941 and was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting and making afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Evolution United Methodist church, a member of the crafters group at church, as well as TOPS, and the Entre Nous club. 

Elizabeth was preceded in death by parents, husband, Donald Earl Van Sickle Sr., son, Donald Van Sickle Jr., son-in-law Jerry Mollus and two grandchildren Laurie Van Sickle and Karissa Mollus.

Roy Lee Thornton, 65, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at Mosaic Hospital.&nbsp;

Roy was born on July 8, 1956 in Highland, Kansas to David and Martha (Ackerson) Thornton, Sr.&nbsp;

He worked at MGP in Atchison, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Roy’s career with MGP Ingredients spanned 47 years starting on August 14, 1974.&nbsp;&nbsp;He spent his entire career in the distillery with the majority of the time in the Feed and Grain area.&nbsp;&nbsp;Roy was the most senior operator in the Plant (this is a big deal in the union).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Alice Cheek, Mary Ann Weir and brother, David Thornton, Jr.&nbsp;

He is survived by his daughter, Dianna Beck (Shane) of Derby, Kansas&nbsp;

Jeffery Dean Allen,&nbsp;58, of Hiawatha, KS died unexpectedly at this home in Pemberton Village.

Jeff was born July 29, 1963 to William and Juanita Burke Allen.&nbsp; He graduated from Papillion High School in Omaha Nebraska.&nbsp; Jeff most recently worked at Baker’s Floral in Omaha, Nebraska.&nbsp; He loved making floral arrangements and gardening.&nbsp; He also had a love for cooking, especially Italian cuisine.

Jeff was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Omaha, NE.

Jeff is survived by his 4 siblings, William Allen and wife Ann of Omaha, NE, Peggy and husband Keary Strube of Powhattan, KS, Sherry and husband Cliff Anderson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Tammy and husband Ed Karnik of Omaha, NE.&nbsp; He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Doris Leeson, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at home surrounded by her husband and children.

She was born September 25, 1933 in St. Joseph to Martin and Luanna (Ashton) Carpenter. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1950, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.

Doris married Marvin Lloyd Leeson on November 27, 1951. They shared 70 years together. He survives of the home.

She was very involved in PTA while her children were in school and was a “block mother” to all neighborhood children.

Devoted to her husband and family, Doris was a beautiful, conscientious woman who knew no end to her duties and always put others first. She also was a very talented woman who played piano and was quite skilled in crafts and art. She loved to draw.

She was very rooted in her faith and was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Jack, David and Martin Carpenter.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin; children, Cathie Marshall, Sandra Bibb (Henry), Michael Leeson (Carol), and Cheryl Wormington; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Robert Carpenter (Charlotte); numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Loretta E. Miller 53, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at her home. 

She was born August 19, 1968 in Spearfish, SD, daughter of Beverly and Willard Groce. She worked at Saxton Chateau as a cook. She enjoyed doing arts and crafts and going shopping. 

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Miller in 2015, her parents and siblings, Mary Ellis, Robert Groce, and Carol Buehler. 

Survivors include: children, Kyle Groce, Crystal (Robert) Watson, Matthew Hahn (Misty Miller,) and Timothy Hahn, sisters, Shonna Bowman, Shirley Umscheid, Jeanette (David) Runnels, and Karen (Carl) Smith, 14 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carol Allison (Schultz) Guier, 67, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 at her home.

Carol was born on December 10, 1953 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to Edward and Betty (Shankle) Schultz.

Carol is a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

She married Roger Guier on April 15, 1978. He survives of the home. Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

Additional survivors include her daughter, Gillian Ewart (Nicholas), brother Edward Schultz and one granddaughter.

Carol Allison (Schultz) Guier  1953 - 2021

Brian Matthew Sharpe, 42, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

On November 4, 1979 he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Marilyn Sharpe.

Brian graduated from Lafayette High School.

He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and a Pokemon Go enthusiast. Brian loved to go fishing with his Uncle Don. Christmas was his favorite holiday. He will be remembered as the kindest man anyone could ever hope to meet.

Survivors include his mother; grandmother, Marjorie M. Catron; siblings, Mauricia Sharpe, Chris Sharpe (Jessica), Angela Sharpe; uncle and aunt, Don and Kim Catron; caregiver, Kathy Lewis; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was born November 16, 1971 in St. Joseph to Thomas E. Mooney, Sr. and Patty D. (Nocks) Mooney.

Wayne worked as a youth minister for Youth for Christ for 16 years, and the 2nd Mile Ministries/Milestone Youth Center for 27 years. Wayne was an Eagle Scout, served as a Boy Scout Adult Leader, was a Sachem in the Tribe of Mico-Say, where he also served as dance director and chaplain for many of the scout camps in the summer. He was a member of the Who’s Who from college, played alto sax for the Kansas University Marching Band while in KU, and in the Alumni Band. Wayne was also a member of the Order of the Arrow, and had attended Philmont Scout Ranch, and Boundary Waters scout camps. Wayne was known for his generous and kind spirit, devoted to youth ministries’. Survivors include two brothers, Warren (Joan) Willmeth, Rolling Meadows, IL, and Willie (Patty) Willmeth, Leavenworth, KS, four nieces, two nephews, four great nieces and two great nephews. Robert Lee Russell II, 67, of Amazonia, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

He was born January 2, 1954 in St. Joseph, son of Meredith and Robert Russell. He graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1972. Bob married Jelsena "Joe" Pierce on July 29, 1972. In 2011, Bob retired after 32 years with the St. Joseph Fire Department as a Mechanic. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, attending auctions and garage sales. 

Bob was preceded in death by wife, Jelsena "Joe" Russell in 2013, his parents, brother, Wes Russell and sister in law, Cindy Russell.

Bob was a veteran of the USAF, a Chemical Engineering graduate of the University of Kansas. He was employed in engineering and plant management for Monsanto and Great Lakes Chemical for a career spanning 34 years and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Olathe KS.

He enjoyed RV travel in North America, wintering in Mesa, AZ for over 20 years, landscape photography, electronics and ham radio.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle &amp; Theodosia Flint, and his wife’s parents, Ivan &amp; Mary Hickman, both of St. Joseph.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Patricia Flint (Olathe, KS); four children, Jay &amp; Colleen Flint (Richmond, TX), Paula &amp; David Kornfeld (Lenexa, KS), John &amp; Lisa Flint (St. Louis, MO), and Sara Flint (Olathe, KS); fourteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances Kay Schraufek-Forshee, 83, Centralia, Missouri, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully to join her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 20, 2021.

On November 19, 1931 she was born to Herbert and Frances (Chapel) Lang in Kahoka, Missouri.

Frances married John Wendell Schraufek on June 17, 1962. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage. He precedes her in death. She married James Forshee in March of 2014. He survives of the home.

She was a Christian previously attending Word of Life Church then bible study in Severance, Kansas.

Frances enjoyed shopping, decorating her home and working in the yard. She liked to play catch with her grandchildren and spend time with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; and brother, Herb Lang.

Charles Edward Malita, 90, of St. Joseph, died November 21, 2021, in St. Joseph, Missouri.&nbsp; Charlie was born November 27, 1930, in St. Joseph to Edward and Eleanor (Swedo) Malita.&nbsp;

He attended Christian Brothers High School and then graduated from Benton High School.&nbsp;

Charlie honorably served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, 40th Division, 160th Infantry Regiment, I Company. &nbsp;&nbsp;He received two Bronze Service Stars,the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He graduated from the Toledo School of Meatcutters. Charlie was a union meatcutter for his entire career.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 571.

Charlie married JoAnn Karl on June 23, 1956, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Easton, MO, and she survives of the home.&nbsp; Also surviving are children Craig (Stephanie) Malita of St. Joseph, MO; Paul (Tomme) Malita of Kansas City, MO; Ann (Jeff) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; Erica (Robert) Johnson of Platte City, MO; Chad (Jeanette) Malita of Easton, MO; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He loved fishing and watching his grandchildren in sports and school performances.&nbsp; He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football, Chiefs football, and Royals baseball.&nbsp; He volunteered his time to many charitable organizations.

Charlie was a devoted husband and father, and a mentor not only to his children, but to many others as well.

Charlie was a union meatcutter for his entire career.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 571.Charlie married JoAnn Karl on June 23, 1956, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Easton, MO, and she survives of the home.&nbsp; Also surviving are children Craig (Stephanie) Malita of St. Joseph, MO; Paul (Tomme) Malita of Kansas City, MO; Ann (Jeff) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; Erica (Robert) Johnson of Platte City, MO; Chad (Jeanette) Malita of Easton, MO; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.He loved fishing and watching his grandchildren in sports and school performances.&nbsp; He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football, Chiefs football, and Royals baseball.&nbsp; He volunteered his time to many charitable organizations.Charlie was a devoted husband and father, and a mentor not only to his children, but to many others as well.Parish Rosary 5:00 PM Friday, November 26th at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel with a visitation following until 7:00 PM.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.&nbsp; Entombment following at Mount Olivet Cemetery.<figure>

Charles Edward Malita  1930 - 2021

Curtis Edward Gamble, of Hiawatha, passed away November 18, 2021 at the age of 64; he was surrounded by his wife and children after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.

Curtis was born March 16, 1957, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Rowena Elizabeth (Dixon) Gamble and Edgar Curtis Gamble.&nbsp; He attended Hiawatha schools, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track, setting multiple records that still stand today.&nbsp; After graduating from Hiawatha High school in 1975, Curtis attended Highland Community College before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Social Science from Kansas State University in 1982.

After college, Curtis joined the U.S. Navy, where he reached the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.&nbsp; He served aboard the frigate&nbsp;U.S.S. Bagley,&nbsp;working as both an administrative assistant and Chief Petty Officer, and contributed to Over-the-Horizon Targeting and cruise missile employment before being honorably discharged in 1988.

In a true example of love-at-first-sight, Curtis met Jeanne Marie (Henry) Gamble on a blind date in September 1986.&nbsp; A few short months later, the two were married on April 25, 1987.&nbsp; Their love is manifested by their three children:&nbsp; Christi, Kathryn, and Jonathan.

Curtis worked tirelessly at whatever he set out to do.&nbsp; He served 21 years in law enforcement as a Probation Officer in Brown and Doniphan Counties and as a Corrections Counselor for the California Department of Corrections &amp; Rehabilitation. &nbsp;&nbsp;He also followed his father’s footsteps and created his own business, starting Gamble’s Lawn Care &amp; Spraying Service.&nbsp; In its decades–plus years of operation, it flourished into one of the largest and most renowned black-owned business in northeast Kansas.&nbsp; He would work from sunrise to sunset, to the annoyance of his children who were forced to try to keep up with him.

Few people love their sports teams more than Curtis.&nbsp; Each weekend, he could be found watching his KSU Wildcats or Kansas City Chiefs, yelling at the referees or shouting, “Chiefs, baby!” at the top of his lungs.&nbsp; He also enjoyed grilling a mean steak, watching every Star Trek episode known to man, and remembered his love of music.&nbsp; His voice could move mountains, and all who heard him sing were blown away.&nbsp; In the mornings, he enjoyed obnoxiously waking his children by singing&nbsp;“Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!”&nbsp;at the top of his lungs.&nbsp; He was voted World’s Best Dad, as evidenced by his many mugs and t-shirts (except during his kids’ teenage years, when they dropped him a few notches).&nbsp; Curtis was also a man of great faith and cultivated a life-long relationship with the Lord; he studied Hebrew, sang in the choir, and read his Bible diligently.

Curtis is survived by his wife Jeanne Gamble of the home; sisters: Jacqueline Dodson of Topeka, KS, and Michaelle (Gamble) Warner of Overland Parks, KS; three children:&nbsp; Christi (Daniel) Gentry of Hiawatha, KS; Kathryn Gamble of Hiawatha, KS; Jonathan (Jaime) Gamble of Livermore, CA; five grandchildren:&nbsp; Sean, Faith, and Matthew Gentry, Damien Jackson, and Mariah Weathersby; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.&nbsp; Curtis is now reunited in paradise with his parents, Rowena and Edgar “Jack” Gamble, grandparents, and many cousins and friends.&nbsp; His faith, which carried him through his earthly troubles/struggles has been rewarded with an eternal glory.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November, 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.&nbsp; Burial with military honors, a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, with follow services at Hiawatha Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Fisher Center.&nbsp;

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday.&nbsp; The family will meet with friends Friday evening from 6 until 7:30.

Thomas E. Reed, 86, of St. Joseph, passed away November 20, 2021.&nbsp; 

Thomas was born July 28, 1935, in Kewanee, Indiana to Thomas Dale and Nelda Magnolia (Hogan) Reed.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960; serving in the Special Forces.

He graduated from Purdue University with a Degree in Electrical Engineering.&nbsp; He retired from General Dynamics Corp. in San Diego, CA, where he was an engineer, specializing in the guidance systems for the Atlas rockets.

Thomas married Janice Blizzard on June 9, 1990 in Prescott Arizona and she survives.&nbsp; Also surviving are three sisters in San Diego, CA and nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Paula Bokay.

He was a member of the Water Garden Society and had built his own water garden.&nbsp; He enjoyed horses and the beauty and anything to do with the outdoors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Patee House.

She was born October 31, 1953 in Great Bend, Kansas, daughter of Mary &amp; Daniel Simpson Sr. She graduated from Great Bend High School, and she worked for State Board of Education in Texas as a Computer Tech. She enjoyed kayaking, biking, the outdoors, and spending time with her family. 

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Simpson.

Cora Kathryn (Kathy) Carr Masteller Jones peacefully passed away on November 9, 2021, with her daughters by her side. 

Cora was born November 18, 1931, to Cora Rebecca Matchett Carr and Harold Vincel Carr in Braymer, Missouri. She spent her childhood in Polo Missouri on the family farm. Moving to St. Joseph, Missouri at age 10. Cora attended Benton High School in St. Joseph and worked at Helen Wrinkles Pharmacy at the soda fountain. She moved to the Kansas City area in 1958. Cora’s passion was being with children. She loved being a stay-at-home mom and raising her three children. She was very active in PTA, a room-mother, and a scout leader. Cora loved remodeling homes, decorating, and knitting. She knitted Christmas stockings for all her children and grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews. After her children left home, she worked at TWA airlines. Cora spent her final years in the warm loving hands of the staff at Ignite St. Mary’s in Blue Springs, Missouri. 

Cora was proceeded in death by her parents, Dave Jones, her husband, Kurt H. Masteller her son, sisters Dorothy Carr George and Lucinda Smith Silkwood, nephews Rick George and Christopher George. 

Cora is survived by her daughters Lisa Masteller Martel and Lori Ann Barnett. Her pride and joy, her grandkids Phillip, Andrew, and Matthew Martel; Benjamin and Timothy Barnett; Allison, Daniel, Amy Masteller. Her brother and sister-in-law Danny and Sally Carr plus numerous nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services will be held on November 29, 2021, at 3:00pm at New King Hill cemetery in south St. Joseph, Missouri. Billy G. Haskins, 96, of St. Joseph, passed away, November 20, 2021 at a local nursing home.&nbsp; Billy was born July 30, 1925, in St. Joseph to Bly C. and Grace L. (Haden) Haskins.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater,&nbsp; mainly in the Philippines during World War II.&nbsp; He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1984 as Chief Clerk&nbsp; after 36 years of service.

Billy married Juanita Cochran on April 17, 1948 and she survives.&nbsp; Also surviving are their children, Kathy Schildknecht (Dennis), Jo Mayse (Elmer), Randy Haskins (Susan); eleven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.&nbsp; Billy and Juanita were avid square dancers and were members&nbsp; of the Pony Express Square Dancers.&nbsp; Billy also enjoyed line dancing, but most of all loved spending time with all his family.
