Sandra Kay Burton, 64, of Bethany, Missouri, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022.

On October 23, 1957 she was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Jephthah Keith and Mary Jane (Barnett) Burton.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Rev. Keith and Mary Jane (Barnett) Burton, a brother, Terry Burton, her grandparents and several uncles and aunts.

She is survived by her brothers, Larry (Brenda) Burton of Bethany, MO, Gene (Patsy) Burton of Bethany, MO, Barry (Linda) Burton of Bethany, MO, Paul (Marsha) Burton of Knox City, MO, a sister, Cindy Burton of Council Bluffs, IA, an aunt, Faye Brown of St. Joseph, MO., and an uncle, Leroy (Gayle) Barnett of Hiawatha, KS., several nephews, nieces and cousins. She also wanted to mention Patricia Smith of Kirksville, MO and Alberta Burton of Council Bluffs, IA.

She received her GED in Knoxville, IA. Sandy, as she was known to family and friends, went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems and a Minor in Business.

Some of her favorite childhood memories were attending revivals and camp meetings with her Dad and Mom, where often her Dad would be the evangelist. Another fond memory was when she traveled with her Dad and Mom by horse and wagon from Bethany, MO to Nelsonville, MO which was approximately a 152 mile journey.

She was a member of the Bethany First Assembly of God Church where she helped with the worship services by running the powerpoint. Her church family was very supportive and an important part of her life as well as her good friends Marilyn Ingham, Cheryl and Greg Beugh.

She liked to work and play games on her computer, play card games with her friends, go fishing with her cousin, Rita, and attend church.

A memorial service will be held at the Bethany Assembly of God Church, Bethany, Missouri on Sunday, September 25th at 2:00 P.M. Internment will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery.

She was born March 26, 1948, to Frank and Violet (Wilfong) Howard in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jean was a volunteer for the American Heart Association and College Hill Park Association for many years.

She was great at caring for others. She was recognized by local leaders as a volunteer and influential person. She was a friend to everyone.

Jean enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She was also a published poet and was a very passionate writer. She was a bargain hunter, and a regular at local garage sales and thrift stores.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Johnnie White, and Corky Howard; two sisters, Betty Lewis, and Joyce Worley.

Jean is survived by her children, Julie Williams, and Jeff Everett (Jenny); grandchildren, Nick and Lucas Sutton, Orian, Olsen, and Piper Everett; siblings, Melvin Howard, Joey Howard, Frank “Butch” Howard, and Vickie Church; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Lon E. “Lonnie” Edwards, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, died Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at his home.

Born December 2, 1949 at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., Lon was raised in St. Joseph, Missouri by his parents, Raymond H. and Gonalee “Lee” (Shelton) Edwards along with his sisters, Cheryl leigh and Teri. Lon’s parents preceded him in death.

He attended South Park Elementary School and was a graduate of Benton High School Class of 1968. While at Benton he was active in high school sports and was named to the All City and All Conference Football Teams his senior year. He served as a lifeguard at Hyde Pool in 1967. He earned a B.A. degree in English Literature from Northwest Missouri State University in 1972. While at Northwest he joined Tau Kappa Epsilon Social Fraternity.

Lonnie began his career with Morris-Plan in 1974. He then worked as a programmer for the former Missouri Methodist Medical Center from 1975 until 1984. He worked for Dodson Insurance, Jackson County Circuit Court, Klindt Corporation and EDS all in the Kansas City area between 1984 and 2001. He then moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked for Percepta until 2009. In 2012 he returned to Missouri, ending his career with US Bank in 2017.

Lonnie was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He joined Pack 12 as a Cub and later entered Troop 12 as a Boy Scout. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1963, the same year in which he was selected for membership in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He found his home and friends who would stick with him for the rest of his life at Camp Geiger. He served on the Camp Staff in 1966, and 1968 through 1973. He attended two National Jamborees, 1973 and 1989. He attended Woodbadge Class NC389 and was active at unit, district and council levels. He worked his way up through the ranks of Mic-O-Say, enjoying his service, comradery and hijinks with his cadre of friends. He eventually rose to the rank of Chieftain. The Eagle Scout Class of 2012 was named in his honor.

He was a sportsman throughout his adult life, where he played fastpitch softball in St. Joseph for many years. Lonnie served as the first president of the grounds crew for the National Fastpitch Tournament in 1981 and 1984.

Lonnie loved the Kansas City Chiefs, from the first game he and his dad attended. He would become a season ticket holder, Red Coater and was famous for his tailgating which included Margaritas Grande at F-22 Baby in the parking lot. If you were there you will remember 6 Flags Over Lonnie, however, if you were there you may not remember anything at all!

Lonnie was a self-proclaimed “Joiner”. He was proud to be a good Lutheran. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge #78, A.F. &amp; A.M; Thirty-Second Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Moila Shrine; Y-Fry Class #42; Sons of Confederate Veterans and Sons of the American Revolution. He qualified for membership in MENSA, of which he was a proud, and sometimes boastful member.

If you knew Lonnie, you know he liked to have fun. His laughter was contagious; making others laugh was a feat he relished. He was a raconteur and loved to tell a good joke, over and over and over again. He lived to be the center-of-attention and could hold his audience spellbound. After a session of his repartee all one could do was simply shake their head. Even as a proud Southsider, he loved the time he spent in the North End at the Brown Bear with his friends there that he accumulated over his lifetime. He always enjoyed an ice-cold drink and was the proud founder of Martini Night.

He is survived by his two sisters, Cheryl Leigh Richardson and her husband, Robert, of Woodinville, Washington and Teri Rene Edwards of Friendsville, Texas; a nephew, Sean Richardson of California; a niece, Erin Richardson of Washington, and an interesting menagerie of friends who he considered family.

Although soon there will be nothing but a granite stone to mark Lonnie’s life, his name his legacy will live on, on the hills above the river . . .

He was a member of McCarthy Baptist Church.

Daniel thoroughly enjoyed coin collecting, mushroom hunting and treasure hunting. He was a proud veteran having served in the US Army during Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; and beloved dogs, Clifford and Scooter.

Larry Dale Richerson, 72, Kidder, Missouri, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022.

On May 14, 1950 he was born to Paul and Betty (Cooper) Richerson in Dennison, Texas.

Larry married Mary Thayer on September 17, 2009.

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and assisted in the Kansas City Temple. Larry worked for Peak Oil Field Service in Alaska as a maintenance supervisor.

Larry’s hobbies included designing and fabricating home system solar arrays for himself and others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife of 40 years, Madilee Metzgar Belmont.

He is survived by his wife; children, Jennifer Peters (Tommy), Tina Richerson, Otis Richerson (Zoe), Heather Richerson, Mystery M. Sand, Pennie Qwen Richerson; grandchildren, Jasmine Rangle, Aeden McClendon, Brycen Richerson-Powell, Ruby Richerson-Arnold; siblings, Paul Wayne Richerson (Patsy), Richard Richerson (Doreen), Annie Richardson (Rich), Margie Nash, Martha Williams, Michael Richerson, and Marie Richerson.

Robert C. “Bob” Carpenter, 65, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 9, 2022 while visiting Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

On June 27, 1957 he was born in Providence, Rhode Island to Robert and Claire (Carlson) Carpenter.

While attending Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio he was a member of the golf team. After graduation, he became a CPA and spent time in various finance and accounting positions with the last 18 years as Chief Financial Officer in IT Consulting.

Bob married Susan Lynn Crawford on October 21, 1995. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Country Club, and the KC Cup Team. Bob’s church family was Rock of KC. He served as Past President of the Mid-Buchanan School Board.

Bob enjoyed a great round of golf and spending time with family. He was known for putting in his best effort to make his lawn resemble a golf course.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Matthew and Ryan Carpenter; mother, Claire Carpenter; siblings, Lisa French (Bill), Cindy Pike (Bryon), and Debbie Koslowski; Sue’s mother and siblings and their families; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Robert C. "Bob" Carpenter 1957 - 2022

David Ricardo Howard Sr, 70, passed away in St. Joseph, MO on 9/8/2022. David retired from active duty in 1999 as a Master Sergeant, with over 25 years of service with the US Marine Corps. During his service, he started as a Radio Operator and switched to Air traffic control communications maintenance in the early 80s. He was stationed at New River, NC, Quantico, VA, Tustin, CA, El Toro, CA, Okinawa, Japan, and finished his career in Ft. Worth, TX. He also participated in short deployments to Thailand, Australia, and the Mediterranean. During his time in Tustin, he was deployed to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope from Dec 1992 - May 1993. His medals included Good Conduct, Navy Achievement, Navy Commendation, and Armed Forces Expeditionary medal. He was also an expert shot with both rifle and pistol and participated in military shooting competitions as a member of the Marine Corps Rifle team, winning multiple awards.

David was born on July 10, 1952 in Washington, DC to Bertha Hackett and William Howard. He grew up in Westmoreland County, VA and worked construction until he joined the Marine Corps in 1974. He was the youngest of 9 children. David was a social butterfly and didn’t know a stranger. He could make anyone laugh. He was a skilled artist and delighted his children with life-size recreations of cartoon characters. He enjoyed playing basketball, bicycling, hot rod cars, cooking exquisite meals and desserts, traveling, and spending time with family. He was always ready to go see the latest movies, and was known to sneak food and drinks into the theater because the prices were too high. He could do a perfect imitation of Yogi Bear. He listened to a variety of music, from Earth, Wind &amp; Fire to Katy Perry. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, from NASCAR to football to ice skating. In his later years, he also enjoyed gardening, watching game shows, and eating out. He often watched the Chiefs during their training camp. He was an active member of Holsey Chapel.

David is survived by his wife of eleven years, Marcene; children Fortisha (Calvin) Williams, David (Dana) Howard Jr., Trina Howard, Erika Howard, and Cheyenne Howard; step-children Glenn (Stephanie) Watson III, Tiffany (Daniel) Stanza; brothers Billy, Bradley, Clyde and Jon; grandchildren Kellie and Sydney Williams, Aaron, Alyssa and Alex Howard, Maxen Brownell and Zayne Graves, and Porter Pamperin; step-grandchildren Hannah, Adalynn and Charlotte Watson, Stephen White and Max, Mila Hubbard, Mariah Stanza and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Katherine and Collette, and brothers Francis and Tracy.

David Ricardo Howard Sr, 70, passed away in St. Joseph, MO on 9/8/2022. David retired from active duty in 1999 as a Master Sergeant, with over 25 years of service with the US Marine Corps. During his service, he started as a Radio Operator and switched to Air traffic control communications maintenance in the early 80s. He was stationed at New River, NC, Quantico, VA, Tustin, CA, El Toro, CA, Okinawa, Japan, and finished his career in Ft. Worth, TX. He also participated in short deployments to Thailand, Australia, and the Mediterranean. During his time in Tustin, he was deployed to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope from Dec 1992 - May 1993. His medals included Good Conduct, Navy Achievement, Navy Commendation, and Armed Forces Expeditionary medal. He was also an expert shot with both rifle and pistol and participated in military shooting competitions as a member of the Marine Corps Rifle team, winning multiple awards.David was born on July 10, 1952 in Washington, DC to Bertha Hackett and William Howard. He grew up in Westmoreland County, VA and worked construction until he joined the Marine Corps in 1974. He was the youngest of 9 children. David was a social butterfly and didn’t know a stranger. He could make anyone laugh. He was a skilled artist and delighted his children with life-size recreations of cartoon characters. He enjoyed playing basketball, bicycling, hot rod cars, cooking exquisite meals and desserts, traveling, and spending time with family. He was always ready to go see the latest movies, and was known to sneak food and drinks into the theater because the prices were too high. He could do a perfect imitation of Yogi Bear. He listened to a variety of music, from Earth, Wind &amp; Fire to Katy Perry. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, from NASCAR to football to ice skating. In his later years, he also enjoyed gardening, watching game shows, and eating out. He often watched the Chiefs during their training camp. He was an active member of Holsey Chapel.David is survived by his wife of eleven years, Marcene; children Fortisha (Calvin) Williams, David (Dana) Howard Jr., Trina Howard, Erika Howard, and Cheyenne Howard; step-children Glenn (Stephanie) Watson III, Tiffany (Daniel) Stanza; brothers Billy, Bradley, Clyde and Jon; grandchildren Kellie and Sydney Williams, Aaron, Alyssa and Alex Howard, Maxen Brownell and Zayne Graves, and Porter Pamperin; step-grandchildren Hannah, Adalynn and Charlotte Watson, Stephen White and Max, Mila Hubbard, Mariah Stanza and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hazel Spoonemore, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022.

She was born May 26, 1947 in St. Joseph to Melvin and Ruby (Clark) Bye.

She worked at Mead Paper Co. for 30-plus years until it closed in 2004.

Hazel loved being outside. She had a way of spotting a four-leaf clover from miles away. She also enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Judy, Melvin Jr., Rena and James; and beloved dogs, Dusty and Missy.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherri Parson (Jason); granddaughters, Shana Boling (Jacob) and Dominique McCabe (Jace Shalz); great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kaiden and Israel; siblings, Marceline Frank and Charles R. Bye; nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Cindy married Mike Delaney on October 27, 1973. Together they raised three daughters.

Cindy loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. She also enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, entertaining, various outdoor activities, and teaching preschool at McCarthy Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Tamara Swoboda and Marsha VanGaasbeek.

Dennis graduated Troy High School in 1971. He worked at Carnation and Silgan for over 15 years and as a mechanic, servicing automobiles and motorcycles.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors: children, Jeremiah Peden, Topeka, Kansas, Josh Peden, Troy, Kansas, and Kristin Pinzino, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hervey Arden McGaugh, 95, passed away on September 2, 2022. He was born on January 24, 1927 in Waldron, Arkansas to Earl Reeves McGaugh and Mildred (Sherrill) McGaugh. At the time of his passing, he was living in Oklahoma City where he had lived for the past 9 years. Prior to that, he lived in St. Joseph, Missouri for 42 years.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Thea McGaugh, his five children, Roy McGaugh (Janie), Patrick McGaugh (Debbie), Annamaria Pellum (Marty), Wayne McGaugh (Jane), and Mark McGaugh. He was preceded in death by all eight of his siblings and his grandson Frank. He is survived by 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren (8th on the way) and other loving relatives.

Hervey, one of nine children, graduated from Waldron High School in 1946 and enlisted in the US Army soon after. He served honorably for 30 years as a Combat Engineer retiring as a Sergeant Major. During that time, he served in the WWII Occupation Forces in Europe, Korea, Vietnam, and several locations in the US and Post-War Europe. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal among many others. After retiring from the US Army, Hervey worked for the State of Missouri at Missouri Western State University for 17 years and retired as Director of Security. He retired in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hervey enjoyed gardening, was an active member of the Gideons, a Sunday School Teacher, and made nursing home visits for his church. He was also an avid sports fan, especially football. In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing with family to include fishing at the ponds at Missouri Western. Hervey was a faithful Christian and a Deacon in the Church for a total of 50 years, 40 of those years at First Baptist Church of St. Joseph. His servant leadership, integrity, kindness, and generosity will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was born August 25, 1943 in Abbeyville, South Carolina, to Roy E. Rapp, Sr. and Jennie Sue (Handon) Rapp.

Roy always said he’d never been west of the Mississippi until 1999. He moved to Missouri after closing his accounting business in Maryland.

He never knew a stranger and made many friends through his frequent travels.

Roy belonged to numerous Masonic organizations in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Missouri. He was Master of both the Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Harmony Lodge in D.C. He also was Worthy Grand Patron of Eastern Star for the District of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and beloved dog, Blondie.

He is survived by his fiancée, Grace Sexton; and several cousins.

He was born June 16, 1966 in Richmond, Kentucky, to Willie and Betty Lou (Forbes) Horn. He grew up in Richmond, later owning and operating the Tobacco Connection in Lexington, Kentucky, for many years.

After marrying Valta (Patton) Hay in February 2010, Scott relocated to St. Joseph.

Scott loved to fish, especially with his family at annual tournaments on the Kentucky River. He also enjoyed online auctions.

He loved his wife and family very much. He also loved hanging out with his grandson, whom he called his “best buddy.”

He was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Scott Horn; his parents; and brother, Alan Horn.

He is survived by his wife, Valta; daughter, Elizabeth Gann (Travis); step-children, Dorinda Pettijohn (Vince), Rebecca Courtney (Mark), Amanda Mueller (Dennis), and Joseph D. She graduated from Denton High School and attended Highland Community College and received a teaching certificate. Rose taught school at Star School. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Women’s Council. Rose enjoyed working outside, her family and her grandchildren. Rose married Eugene Helmstetter on December 30, 1947, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Purcell, KS, they were married 52 years. He preceded her in death on June 20, 2000. Survivors include sons, Tom Helmstetter, Denton, KS, Jerry (Tina) Helmstetter, Denton KS, daughters, Janie Kennedy, Wichita, KS, Patty (Skip) Meranda, Plano, TX, a daughter in law, Lucy Helmstetter, Atchison, KS, ten grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. Tina M. (Simerly) Bonnett, 50, Hemple, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

She was born March 3, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Reggie and Linda (Dudley) Simerly. She grew up in Fillmore, where she attended Antioch Church. Tina graduated from North Andrew High School in 1990, then took classes at Missouri Western State University. Tina married Heath Bonnett on January 20, 2006. He survives of the home.

She was co-owner and office manager of Bonnett Trailer Sales &amp; Service. Tina loved shopping trips with Rylee, traveling with Heath, going to truck and tractor pulls, riding her side-by-side, driving her Jeep with the top down, and cruising in her Chevy Duramaxes. She enjoyed Mexican food, mowing her 6-acre yard, and Sunday couch time with her dogs.

Tina was a very generous person with a contagious smile and laugh who didn’t know a stranger and would do anything for anybody. She loved spending time with family. She was supportive of her community and family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Reggie Simerly; father-in-law, Michael R. Bonnett; grandparents, Marceline and Delmar Simerly.

Survivors include her husband, Heath; daughter, Rylee Martin (Brendon); mothers, Linda Bates and Kathy Powell (Earl); mother-in-law, Rhonda Bonnett; siblings, Regina Stevens (Brian), Ladina Lee (Kevin), Kalina Hoehn (Dan), and Kane Mueller (Vicki); aunt, Babs “Bobbi” Simerly; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends; and her beloved dogs, Petey, Doodle, Rudy and Conway.

Timothy Lane Sarver, 71, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022.

He was born to Merrill and Lydia (Winegardner) Sarver on March 4, 1951 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Timothy graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1969. He attended Northwest Missouri State College in 1970 before enlisting in the Kansas Army National Guard. After completing his military obligation to the Kansas Army National Guard, Timothy re-enlisted in the 139th Airlift Wing in September of 1977. He was assigned to the Vehicle Maintenance Section, and soon was cross-trained to become a Special Purpose Vehicle Equipment Supervisor. In September 1994, he was selected as Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent, and in February of 2000, he became the Vehicle Maintenance Manager. Chief Master Sergeant Timothy Sarver retired as the Chief of Transportation for the 139th Airlift Wing, Missouri Air National Guard in St. Joseph, Missouri in 2011.

Timothy married Lynna Beth Talmadge on July 11, 1970. They had one son, Philip. Timothy helped coach and run his various football leagues, as well as coaching his baseball teams through the years. He enjoyed golfing, and was a member of the Duncan Hills Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by his son, Philip Sarver; parents, Merrill and Lydia; and parents-in-law, Wilson and Ruby Talmadge; 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years; grandchildren, Lydia Sarver and Jackson Sarver; 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

Robert V. Waldrop, 90, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

He was born August 10, 1932, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of Jane R. Waldrop and Earl H. Waldrop. He was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and also received two additional degrees from Missouri Western University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, with service in France. He married Mary L. Wolfe on August 18, 1962 in St. Joseph. For more than 25 years he was a member of the editorial staff of the St. Joseph Gazette, and later was managing editor of The Gazette and then the merged St. Joseph News-Press/Gazette. He served as city administrator of the City of St. Joseph from 1976 to 1981. He was also employed for seven years on the news staff at KQTV.

He was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church, the National Military Heritage Museum, Pony Express Historical Society and local Masonic bodies. He was a volunteer at Mount Mora Cemetery.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Earl Waldrop; niece, Karen Waldrop Allen.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, a daughter, Jill Waldrop of Phoenix; two sons, Michael of St. Joseph and his wife Penny, and Bryan of Dallas; four nieces and nephews.
