KFEQ Hotline host
Barry Birr wraps up his last week on the air this week and received a surprise
guest Monday morning.

“Congressman Sam
Graves is here,” Birr stated when Graves entered the KFEQ studio unannounced and
sat down in the guest chair. “Thank you for coming in.”

“Yeah, sure,”
Graves replied to the astonished Birr.

“I’m not sure why
you’re here, but – you weren’t on my schedule – but I’m sure glad to see you.”

“Well, Barry, so
since you’re retiring, I decided to do a Congressional record, read something
into the Congressional record in the U.S. House of Representatives, that commemorated
your time here at KFEQ and all the work that you’ve done over the years,” with
that, Graves presented Birr with an official copy of the remarks he made on the
House floor.

Graves said he
wanted to honor Birr’s 41 years at KFEQ and nearly 33 as host of the KFEQ
Hotline.

“That’s just
something to say thank you for the work that you’ve done and everything you’ve
done for KFEQ and the whole region,” Graves told Birr.

Birr came to KFEQ
as news director in 1984. He created the KFEQ Hotline in 1992. Birr retires
after the Hotline on Friday.

Congressman Graves surprises Birr on KFEQ Hotline

After leading the Drake Bulldogs to a 31-4 record, and their first NCAA Tournament win since 1971, former Northwest Missouri State coach Ben McCollum will be heading to be the next head coach at Iowa.&nbsp;

Iowa Athletic Director Beth Goetz announced today that McCollum was to be named the 23rd coach in the history of the Hawkeyes, replacing longtime head coach Fran McCaffery after he was fired following Iowa's exit from the Big 10 tournament.&nbsp;

“We are excited to welcome Coach McCollum and his family back to Iowa City.  Ben has a track record of success both on and off the court. His talent for developing student-athletes and fostering a strong team culture has been evident throughout his career,” said Goetz in a news release.  “I am confident that Hawkeye fans will enthusiastically support the McCollum family as we embark on the next chapter of Iowa men’s basketball.”

McCollum arrives in Iowa City with a sterling resume that includes four NCAA Division II national championships at Northwest Missouri State University. In his first season in NCAA Division I, McCollum guided Drake to a school-record 31 wins, the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles, and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

During his 16-year coaching career, McCollum has amassed a record of 426-95 record for an 81.8 winning percentage. It is fifth-best all-time among collegiate men’s basketball coaches.

“Returning to Iowa City as the head coach of the Hawkeyes is a dream come true for me and my family. The passion of Hawkeye fans is unmatched, and I am incredibly excited to get started on this new journey together. I am thankful to so many people who have been part of my journey, especially Michelle, Peyton, Tate and Grace," McCollum says.&nbsp;

Two persons have
been detained as the St. Joseph Police Department investigates a shooting
around noon Sunday.

No one was harmed
in the shooting in the 600 block of North 23rd Street. A neighbor
called police who confirmed shots were fired in the house in an apparent domestic
dispute.

A man and a woman,
both in their 20s, surrendered to police voluntarily.

No one hurt in St. Joseph shooting; domestic dispute suspected

HARRISON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Sunday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Cadillac CTS driven by a 19-year-old Bethany man was eastbound on Route Y at East 295th Street ten miles northeast of Bethany. The driver failed to negotiate a curve. The car traveled off the north side of the road down a steep embankment, became airborne, crossed 295th Street and struck several trees.

Life Flight transported two passengers, a 12-year-old Bethany boy and a 13-year-old Ridgeway boy, to Children's Mercy. The driver was not injured. The teens were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.&nbsp; The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

2 Missouri juveniles airlifted to hospital after violent crash

EMS transported the driver and a passenger Adam W.&nbsp;Etherton, 42, Troy , to Mosaic in St. Joseph. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Holt County EMS transported the Wisconsin man to Liberty Hospital. The truck driver was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Driver hospitalized after rear-end crash

BROWN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30p.m. Saturday in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway&nbsp; Patrol reported a 2017 Harley Davidson driven by Marlon Steven Carrol, 55, Sabetha, was westbound on 300th Road approximately four miles northeast of Morrill.&nbsp; The motorcycle struck a road sign, traveled into the north ditch and came to rest on its side.

EMS transported Carrol to&nbsp;Amberwell Hiawatha Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

In a historic year that saw both the Benton boys and girls basketball teams compete for a state title, both are returning to St. Joseph with second place finishes in the Class 4 Show Me Showdown.&nbsp;

The boys faced a tough test against a Vashon team that coming into the game had won four straight state titles.&nbsp; The Cardinals though didn't waiver through the first quarter, shooting 5 of 12 to the Vashon's 3 of 9 and led at the end of one 14-10.&nbsp;

But the Wolverines showed in the second quarter why they've won so many titles in a row, and shot a blazing 11 of 15 in the quarter, outscoring Benton 30-10 and pushing their lead to 16 at the halftime break.&nbsp; Vashon's Jimmy McKinney III had 11 points at the break, while Myles Bachali led the Cardinals with 4.&nbsp;

Benton's struggles continued into the third quarter while Vashon continued shooting hot, pushing their lead even farther with a 27 point third quarter.&nbsp; The Cardinals did find better luck in the fourth quarter, shooting 57% from the field, but it was too little too late, falling to Vashon 81-45.&nbsp;

Bachali led the Cardinals with 14 points while Lincoln Goodwin added 12 points.&nbsp; The second place finish for the boys was their best finish since 1941, when they won a championship.&nbsp; The Cardinals finished the season 29-4.&nbsp;

For the Benton girls, it was a battle against a Doniphan team that was seeking their first ever state championship, while the Cardinals were looking for their first since 2016.&nbsp;

Much like the boys, the Lady Cardinals led after the first quarter 15-10, but in the second quarter the&nbsp;Donettes shot 71% to Benton's 36%, but even with that a last second shot from&nbsp;Eliana Arambula tied up the game at 27 a piece heading into the halftime break.&nbsp; Andrea Simmons led the Cardinals at halftime with 7 points.&nbsp; Carsyn Hagood also had 7 points for Doniphan.&nbsp;

The Donettes pulled away even more in the third quarter, the Cardinals continuing to shoot cold.&nbsp; While Benton did force seven turnovers in the quarter, Doniphan held a 10 point lead heading into the final quarter 48-38.&nbsp;

The Lady Cardinals did start to push a comeback, battling and continuing to cut into the Donettes lead, eventually getting within two points with 13 seconds remaining.&nbsp; But, a layup from Doniphan, followed by a missed three point shot with five seconds left, brought the game to an end and Benton fell 63-59.&nbsp;

Simmons finished with a team leading 18 points, while&nbsp;Arambula added 12 points.&nbsp; Hagood scored 31 points for Doniphan.&nbsp; The second place finish was the third in the last four years for Benton.

The Lady Cardinals finished the season 24-7.

Benton boys, girls finish second in Class 4 championship games

For the first time in 12 years, TNA Wrestling is coming to St. Joseph for live tapings at the Civic Arena.  

Two legendary wrestlers that might show up are the TNA World Tag Team Champions, and one of the most decorated tag teams in wrestling history, Matt and Jeff Hardy, the Hardy Boyz.  

Matt Hardy says it's very exciting to be bringing TNA back to St. Joseph 

"You can tell that TNA is really doing everything right right now because we're hitting all these markets that we haven't been to in so many years," Hardy tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "So, TNA has been white hot recently and we're very happy and proud to be part of this great resurgence TNA is having right now."

Earlier this year, the WWE announced a partnership with TNA, which has allowed wrestlers from each company to show up on either TNA Impact! or WWE's NXT.  Matt Hardy says it's exciting because it makes wrestling unpredictable 

"You never know who from NXT might show up on TNA programming, you never know who from TNA might show up on NXT on a Tuesday night," Hardy explains.  "And that's what makes wrestling great, when it's unpredictable and you don't know what's going to happen next and you get legitimately surprised, that's when wrestling is the best-case scenario." 

Recently, during TNA Sacrifice, Matt Hardy was attacked by Nic Nemeth, formerly Dolph Ziggler in the WWE, and his brother Ryan following a win in a steel cage, and the Hardy's could be looking for some revenge when TNA is in St. Joseph

Jeff Hardy says people that come to the tapings should expect exactly what TNA stands for, Total Nonstop Action 

"Beginning of revenge, the Nemeth brothers and they messed with the wrong set of brothers," Hardy says. "And Leon Slater man, he is a star in the making, he does the 450 Swanton and it's just incredible to see him do that in person, so yeah it's going to be some total nonstop action."

TNA Wrestling back in St. Joseph for first time in 12 years for live tapings

For the first time since 1992, the Benton boys basketball team will compete in the Final Four, starting today.

Head Coach Jared Boone says while he's told his players it's ok to take step back and realize how special this opportunity is, he's also reminded them to think back to the offseason, and remember this was the goal

"To get down here and have an opportunity to play for a state championship, and it's like you guys have achieved that but we're not satisfied with this, because we want to win," Boone tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "Just kind of keep reminding them of that and allowing them to take it in, but also not making it seem like oh it's state so there's a lot of pressure blah, blah, blah, it's like no it's just another game on the schedule."

For the first time ever, both the Benton boys and girls basketball teams will be competing for a state championship, at the same time. 

Boone says a lot of people in the southside of St. Joseph know how important this is

"They know the specialness of this and the importance of this," Boone says.  "And so I've been making jokes to my wife and everybody it's like man I hope people lock their houses up, because the whole south end could get robbed because nobody's going to be down here the next couple days."

Girls head coach Chris Michaels says this is special, and adds after serving as an assistant under Boone, it's something he knew would happen sooner rather than later

"We knew Boone would be there but to be able to be there with him and the both of us going and supporting each other and basically having a built in crowd that travels with you is something that's special, and will never be forgotten," Michaels explains.

The Benton girls basketball team went to two straight Final fours before missing out last year.  This year, they are back in Columbia looking for a state title.

Michaels says his message to his girls coming into this season was to remember what it felt like to not be part of the final four. 

"We just kind of got surprised a little bit last year and I think we thought it was going to be easy to make it again," Michaels says.  "What we did this year is we came in and made sure we understood it was going to take everyday getting better in order to do our goal, and so we've done that and we've gotten better every single time we touch the floor, and we're very intentional in what we do."

Both the boys and girls are in action today, both against Logan Rogersville.  The boys tipoff at 4pm, the girls at 8pm in Columbia.  The championship and third place games will be Saturday

Benton boys and girls look to make history during Final Four

With national attention focused on immigration issues, Missouri legislators have joined in efforts to address the issue at the state level but have seen little progress midway through their annual session.

More than a dozen bills have been introduced, but the main activity on immigration has been two executive orders Gov. Mike Kehoe signed when he took office in January.

The push for stricter immigration policy comes after President Donald Trump signed 10 executive orders during his first week in office. Since then, several states, including Missouri, have introduced legislation to follow suit.

On the day Kehoe was inaugurated, he signed two executive orders dealing with how state agencies will handle immigration issues.

Executive Order 25-05 states that law enforcement systems will begin collecting immigration status from criminal offenders. In his second order, 25-04, certain members of the Missouri Highway Patrol will be trained in federal immigration laws. Once trained, these officers will enforce federal immigration laws, focusing on preventing illegal immigration, apprehending criminal offenders and intercepting drug trafficking.

Here’s what to know about proposed immigration policies making their way through the Missouri legislature.

Several pieces of legislation aim to limit or punish immigrants lacking permanent legal status.

Sponsored by Sen. Jill Carter, a Republican from Granby, Senate Bill 58 allows the governor to assist other states through an interstate compact in securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Carter said her bill was designed as a catalyst for a broader conversation about how states are dealing with this “crisis,” which is classified into three main categories: humanitarian, health and public safety.

After a tumultuous committee hearing — with one witness calling a state senator a fascist and others carrying signs in protest — the bill won approval and is on the Senate calendar for consideration.

Also debated in the Senate Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety, SB 72 would create a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program at the state level, said sponsor Sen. David Gregory, a Republican from Chesterfield.

The bill also makes entering the country illegally a felony in Missouri, which makes immigrants lacking permanent legal status ineligible to vote in elections, receive a driver’s permit or license, receive public benefits or become a legal state resident. Many of those provisions are already part of federal or state law.

Commonly known as the “bounty hunter” immigration bill, this would create a new program to train bounty hunters who would be allowed to arrest those in Missouri who entered the country illegally, Gregory said.

Speaker of the House Jon Patterson said in January he had not heard any enthusiasm from House Republicans for a bill that would put a bounty on immigrants lacking permanent legal status. Patterson said even if the bill makes its way through the Senate, it is unlikely to gain much support in the House.

Also sponsored by Gregory, SB 480 would require a court to determine whether a defendant charged with an immigration trespassing offense is seeking asylum. If they are not seeking asylum, the court can order that they be jailed until trial. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety.

Two bills, SB 137 and SB 282, would create the offense of improper entry by immigrants lacking permanent legal status with additional provisions, such as deportations. The latter, sponsored by Sen. Ben Brown, Washington Republican, would impose a $10,000 fine with incremental punishments, while the former, sponsored by Sen. Curtis Trent, a Republican from Springfield, would impose a fine of $100,000.

Sponsored by Rep. Richard West, a Republican from Wentzville, House Bill 540 would create the “offense of trespass by an illegal alien” for immigrants lacking permanent legal status who violate state law or county municipal ordinance. The bill has since been referred to the House Committee on Emerging Issues.

Another bill, HB 120, establishes the “Immigrant Employment Registration and Taxation Protection Act.” Sponsored by Rep. Jim Murphy, a Republican from St. Louis, the bill would require that the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations maintain a “database or registry of qualified immigrant workers.” Those who fail to provide the correct documentation to verify work authorization status would be charged with a felony.

The bill has not been assigned to a committee.

On a similar note, SB 528 would impose penalties for employers who fail to enroll and actively participate in a federal work authorization program. The penalties could be things like fines for employing an immigrant lacking permanent legal status. Sponsored by Minority Floor Leader Sen. Doug Beck, a Democrat from Affton, the bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on General Laws.

Sponsored by Sen. Rick Brattin, a Harrisonville Republican, SB 114 would fine communities that declare themselves sanctuaries for immigrants lacking permanent legal status $25,500 per day. The bill expands the offense of transporting an immigrant lacking permanent legal status to include concealment or encouraging one to come to Missouri. It would also allow law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws that establish criminal penalties. No hearing has been scheduled.

Current Missouri statute prohibits municipalities from adopting sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal requirements to verify or report illegal immigration statuses or grant one the right to lawful presence. HB 1163, sponsored Rep. Bill Lucas, R-DeSoto, clarifies that any municipality that adopts such policy would be prohibited from receiving state money. The bill has not been sent to a committee.

Rep. Wick Thomas, D-Kansas City, introduced HB 1051 to repeal the prohibition against sanctuary cities. Current law states if a municipality fails to suspend business permits of those employing immigrants lacking permanent legal status, it is subject to penalties. This bill would repeal the penalties. The bill has not been assigned to a committee.

Some bills would act as provisionary safeguards for immigrants, given aggressive efforts to question and detain members of certain ethnic groups.

SB 738 provides that if a person submits certain federal documents relating to employment authorization, they are eligible for a temporary professional or occupational license. Sponsored by Sen. Maggie Nurrenbern, D-Kansas City, the bill is waiting to be read a second time on the Senate floor before being assigned to a committee.

Bills cracking down on immigration moving slowly in Missouri legislature

The Maryville R-II Board of Education approved a separation agreement from its superintendent in closed session late Wednesday night.

Board president Josh McKim said the vote was unanimous to part ways with Superintendent Logan Lightfoot at the end of the school year. The Maryville Forum reports he did not give a specific reason why.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Referencing a joint statement provided by the district’s and Lightfoot’s attorneys in the matter, McKim said, “Our goals are no longer mutually aligned. … Dr. Lightfoot has resigned.”

The statement also includes the following: “Dr. Lightfoot and the Board of Education both wish each other well in their future endeavors.”

Lightfoot will remain on paid leave until his resignation takes effect on June 30. He was placed on leave on Feb. 24 without public explanation. The school board did not acknowledge the superintendent had been placed on leave until March 3 in response to a Forum inquiry.

Maryville board of education unanimously approves split from superintendent

 Chiefs Radio Network executive producer Dan Israel has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 60.&nbsp;&nbsp;His family shared the news of his passing on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs also shared their condolences on social media. Owner Clark Hunt, head coach Andy Reid and President Mark Donovan each shared their own statements.

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said Israel was an important part of the organization for more than 35 years.

"Dan was dedicated, he was kind, and he brought joy into our building each day," Hunt said. "Through his battle with cancer over the past ten years, these qualities served as an inspiration to his coworkers and Chiefs fans alike. We will certainly miss him, and we will keep his family in our prayers."

Israel is credited with building up the network, which now has affiliates in 12 states.

"I was heartbroken to hear about the loss of Dan Israel. Over the last several years, I watched Dan battle this disease with strength and a positive attitude," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. "Dan was the first person I would interview with after games. No matter how he was feeling, he always put that aside to get that interview in with a positive spin for our fans. He was a huge part of the Chiefs Radio Network and the Chiefs football team. I loved Dan Israel, and he will be missed by the Chiefs organization but never forgotten."

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dan Israel this morning. Danny was part of every Chiefs game of my entire career, and I consider it a great privilege to have been able to watch him work as part of the Chiefs Radio Network."&nbsp; Said Chiefs President Mark Donovan.&nbsp; "He was a model of professionalism, commitment, and kindness, and he brought a passion to his work that was unmatched, even as he privately battled health conditions for years. Over the last several years, I watched Dan battle this disease with strength and a positive attitude," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. "Dan was the first person I would interview with after games. Chiefs Mourn the Passing of Chiefs Radio Network Executive Producer Dan Israel

State Sen. Rusty
Black has a lot on his plate this year, chairing the Missouri Senate Local
Government, Elections, and Pensions Committee.

Black, a
Republican from Chillicothe, says his committee has been hearing bills on
election integrity, though Black says he has been in touch with county clerks
throughout northwest Missouri who don’t report any problems in their counties.

“But I do
understand the concerns people have in other areas where the people have access
to voting or the fact are the right people voting? And those things can
probably be strengthened,” Black tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “A lot of times
those don’t have to be strengthened but by little bitty changes that help
benefit that.”

Black says
Republicans still want to increase the voter threshold needed to approve
changes to the state constitution through initiative petition. The senator says
that will remain a priority of the Republican Caucus until the issue is placed
before voters.

Black says the
state needs to do something to shore up the pensions for county sheriffs since
voters rejected a proposed fix in November. Missouri voters soundly rejected
Amendment 6 on the November ballot. It would have reinstated a $3 court fee to
fund the Missouri Sheriff’s Retirement System, a fee charged for years, yet thrown
out recently by the courts. The ballot initiative would have put the fee back
in place to help fund pensions for sheriffs, circuit attorneys, and prosecuting
attorneys.

Supporters say
without the money the fee generated the pension will dry up in nine years. The
Missouri Sheriff’s Retirement System reports it supports 200 retirees and their
survivors and has 114 sheriffs contributing to the fund.

Black says the funding
problem remains in wake of the issues defeat.

“When that lost
that caused tremendous problems with the sheriffs’ retirement system funding,”
according to Black. “I’m hoping that we find some kind of path forward to try
to make sure that the retirement system for our sheriffs around the state can
be stabilized from where it’s at today.”

Black expects a
much more productive legislative session this year than the past two in Jefferson
City.

“Already, it’s more
productive than it’s been in the past. Doesn’t mean that we’re not going to
have filibusters, we’re not going to have hard conversations. But, yes, the
fact that we don’t have a bunch of people running for statewide office that I
serve with is very, very helpful this year,” Black says with a chuckle.

Aside from the
budget bills, the Missouri legislature approved only 28 bills last year, a
historically low level.

Black says the
pace has changed after some of his colleagues decided to run for higher office
and left the Senate. Many blamed the Senate’s Freedom Caucus, comprised of very
conservative Republicans, for bottling up the legislative session, leading to
its lack of productivity.

Sen. Black, busy this year, expects more productive legislative session

Open burning will be allowed in St. Joseph starting next month.  

St. Joseph Health Educator Stephanie Malita says only burning of limbs, branches and brush is allowed and it needs to be contained 

"We need people to keep the contents in a 55-gallon sized container, so it can be an old 55-gallon drum, it can even chicken wire or some kind of mesh that is that same volume," Malita tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post 

Malita says someone also needs to watch the fire at all times and keep a source of water nearby in case the fire gets out of control.  Only one fire can burn at a time. Burning is allowed between 8am and 6pm 

Also, no fires must be within 15 feet of a building.  Malita says fires can be unpredictable 

"And the weather in this region is unpredictable, so the wind changes and you know maybe some spark gets blown away into a neighbor's yard that's dry, there's a lot of things to take into consideration if you're going to be burning that yard waste," Malita explains. 

Malita says if a fire were to occur, be sure to call the fire department 

"They have stated, and this has been the case for years, they will come to a yard fire without lights and sirens, unless it's actually involving a structure," Malita says.  "They'll ask those questions if you call into the dispatch." 

If conditions are not ideal for burning officials will cancel open burning for the day.  An announcement will be made online.

Spring open burning allowed in St. Joseph starting next month

Buchanan County officials want to make residents aware of any dangers of a tornado and have added several new sirens in the county.  

Emergency Management Director Bill Brinton says there have been 10 new sirens added around the county since he took on the job 

"City of Agency that added one and my county commissioners are very supportive," Brinton tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.  "And we've added one at Lake Contrary and Rosecrans over the French Bottoms, and we added one to Halls, added one to Route JJ near Dekalb, and we added a new one at the Shoppes and on South 169 out by Ebenezer United Methodist Church, and the East Hills addition." 

Brinton says the county has added six new sites along with replacing some of the old sirens after the purchase of 12 new sirens. Brinton feels as if the county is well taken care of 

"Well, you're never going to have enough, I mean they have a circle of about one square mile or one and a half, but I'm very careful about where I put them," Brinton explains.  "Like the one in Wallace is up on top of a huge hill, cause sound travels, it's one of those things where people hear it far, far away, so we're very careful about where we put them." 

Brinton says mostly all of the sirens have a revolving sound to keep people aware.  Brinton advises everyone to also be aware of the weather conditions and any danger that may come.

Buchanan County well prepared for tornadoes with several new sirens

Law enforcement is investigating an incident after a swatting call was reported at Northwest Missouri State University on Wednesday.

According to the University, Northwest received a swatting call around 11:30 a.m. to its main phone line that threatened gun violence on the main campus.&nbsp; University Police Department officers searched and cleared facilities on campus. The University says no threat was found.

University Police, Maryville Police Department, and the Nodaway County Sheriff's Department are investigating the incident.

Law enforcement investigating swatting call at NWMSU

ANDREW COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Wednesday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Dodge Caravan driven by a 59-year-old St. Joseph man was westbound on Route W at U.S. 169 in Avenue City.

The driver failed to yield right of way and entered the intersection. A southbound 2025 Buick Envision driven by a 70-year-old Albany man struck the van.

Andrew County EMS transported both drivers to Mosaic Life Care. The van driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

2 hospitalized after SUV, van crash in Andrew County

For another year, the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau is bringing back the Show Me St. Jo Experience.  

During the event, a guided bus tour will take people around St. Joseph, to many of the museums, while teaching some of the history of the city.  

Spokesman Christian Mengel says the bus tour is great for anyone, whether you're from St. Joseph and have been to the museums or are from out of town. 

"You're going to see something that you want to come back to that maybe you've not been before, or if you have been before but maybe it's been a few years," Mengel tells Barry Birr, host of the KFEQ Hotline.  "I want to say all of our museums, and all of our attractions we end up going to on this, they all have something new within the last five years, and most of them new within the last one to two years, so you can still get a lot from it even if you are a frequent museum goer." 

Mengel says the event is great for groups and also families 

"You just get shuttled around and told a lot of history, we cover your lunch we cater in for you and that's included in your ticket, you get a shirt at the end of the day, a t shirt St. Joseph branded," Mengle says.  "And also, because we throw so many tourism things at you, you also get a certificate signed by the mayor as an advocate for St. Joseph." 

Mengel says this event has been very popular with people. 

"In the three years that I've been a part of it I want to say our lowest score, because they can fill out a survey at the end, and I want to say the lowest score was like an eight, and we've only had one or two eight's, everybody else's are nines and tens," Mengel explains.  "And the reason for the eight, was that we didn't spend enough time at some of the places." 

The first event is coming up during Memorial Day weekend on May 27th.  The cost to participate is $25 per person.

Missouri Western State University has seen massive growth in a program launched four years ago.  

President Elizabeth Kennedy says the cybersecurity program has continued growing in interest 

"We launched the undergraduate program in the fall of 2021 with three students, this fall we had 32, if I'm doing my math right, I think that's about a 92% increase," Kennedy tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.  "And we know that freshman are about 60% of that program, so that's another area where the demand is high." 

Kennedy says the university has also developed a state-of-the-art laboratory for the program within the Houlne Center for Convergent Technology with a war room for students learn to understand threat detection and mitigation. 

Kennedy says that cybersecurity is a field that is ever-growing 

"So again, it's where there's student demand and regional and actually national workforce needs," Kennedy explains.  "But this is every business, it's every agency, hospitals." 

Kennedy says those who graduate from the program as an information security analyst, they could land a job with a starting salary of $80,000 to $90,000 in a field that is projected to grow eight percent over the next 10 years.
