Former northwest Missouri Republican Congressman
Tom Coleman has come out in favor of Democrat Trudy Busch Valentine for United
States Senate.

Though Coleman throws his support to Valentine’s
candidacy, it is his opposition to the Republican nominee that is most
prominent. Coleman calls Attorney General Eric Schmitt too extreme, pointing
out Schmitt has done everything he could to win the endorsement of former
President Donald Trump.

“Eric Schmitt is associated with Donald Trump as
much as he could,” Coleman tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “He begged for his
endorsement and got a half-endorsement, or a half-baked endorsement I guess,
since his name was Eric.”

In the Missouri Senate race, Trump famously
endorsed Eric, without providing a last name, largely seen as purposely
ambiguous in support of both Eric Schmitt and former Gov. Eric Greitens.

Coleman criticizes Schmitt for filing a lawsuit
in Pennsylvania in an attempt to overturn that state’s vote in favor of Biden
over Trump. Coleman asks how Missourians would feel if Pennsylvania attempted
to interfere with its elections.

Coleman claims Busch Valentine is right on the
issues, in the mainstream with American voters, and more in line with most
Missourians in her support of abortion rights.

“And Eric Schmitt is just the opposite,” Coleman
charges. “He has even introduced legislation, couldn’t wait until the Roe v.
Wade decision was made before he decided and decreed, I’m not sure how he did this
legally, that Missouri now has a total prohibition on abortion.”

The Missouri General Assembly approved
legislation that would prohibit abortion if the United States Supreme Court
overruled Roe v. Wade. Once the court did so in the Dobbs case, Schmitt
declared that state law banned abortion.

Coleman also faults Schmitt, as Attorney General,
for filing lawsuits against 47 Missouri school districts in an attempt to overturn
mask mandates imposed during the coronavirus pandemic. 

Coleman praises Busch Valentine for her service
as a nurse and her open-mindedness on the campaign trail.

“She’s out there with the people. She’s out there
keeping her mind open on things that’s she’s not familiar with,” says Coleman. “But
Eric Schmitt trying to endanger and put at risk our children in class and
schools as he did, I think that’s just wrong. I think she has the capability of
being an outstanding senator and that’s why I endorsed her.”

Coleman served eight terms as the representative
of the Sixth Congressional District of Missouri.

Community members in Andrew County are working to protect the future of the county and have developed the Andrew County Foundation.  

The funds raised by the Andrew County Foundation will go towards community improvements and will allow community members to cement their legacy within the community.  

Foundation Trustee Wakefield Hare says the fund that are raised by the foundation can be used for anything in Andrew County. 

"It is unrestricted so it's not like oh here are the strict parameters and we think that's one of the main benefits of the fund just because the community needs are always changing, they're dynamic," Hare tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "And so, that's why the trust part becomes so important to say how and what, who can we trust to make sure good decisions are made with community assets." 

The foundation was created in 2021 by Leadership Savannah Alumni.  Hare says the foundation helps fund good ideas for community improvement 

"Well, there might be 100 good ideas to do that but then how does somebody go from idea to actually implementing a great idea?" Hare asks. "And we know that resources often will help people otherwise (they) say nope ideas dead there's just not enough to get it done, now we're saying the foundation provides capital resources to maybe spur and grow some of those ideas, foster some of those ideas." 

Hare says the foundation doesn't exist to come up with those ideas, but rather to help people in the community fund their ideas.  

Recently, the foundation received 15-thousand dollars from the Gary Taylor Trust and the Harry and Helen Messick Trust to launch into its next step in fundraising. 

Hare says one project the foundation wants to focus on is connecting youth to their community.  He uses Brookfield as an example of that, with the city giving their high school graduates mailboxes 

"That help them tie their roots and their identity back to their hometowns," Hare explains. "And so, as much as we want many of our young people in our community to go out and see what this world has to offer, this country has to offer, we also want them never to underappreciate what our particular hometown communities can do for them." 

Hare says there are many good ideas of how the funds could be used towards youth in Andrew County.

Andrew County Foundation hopes to have money for residents to dream big

Getting a turkey for that thanksgiving dinner will soon be on your to do list and if you can't afford one Food for Kids can help.  

Food For Kids founder Sheila Gilbert says they won't only have turkeys to give away though at the event. 

"We give out paper goods, milk, sodas, everything is first come first serve, Cornish hens some people don't want a turkey we have Cornish hens, we're even giving out bacon this year" Gilbert tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "So, we advise the folks to come out and get a turkey but we also need donations to make this happen." 

If you are interested in donating a turkey or money to help with the drive you can contact Gilbert at 713-514-2843. 

Gilbert says 99% of the people that come out and get a turkey are going to cook that turkey for Thanksgiving. 

"We start November the 4th because the weather gets bad after the first week of November and it's hard for us to maneuver all of those goods outside," Gilbert explains. "So that's why we start early, so you can have it in your freezer and that would be a worry you don't have to worry about." 

Gilbert says canned goods will also come with the turkey when you pick it up.  One turkey can be received per family.  

The annual turkey giveaway event will be held in the St. Francis Baptist Church parking lot starting at 11am on November 4th and it will run while supplies last. Sack lunches will also be provided

CLINTON COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Tuesday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Dustin A. Cox, 20, Bonner Springs, Kansas, was northbound on Interstate 35 two miles south of Cameron.

The SUV traveled off the road, struck a MODOT sign, returned to the road, rolled into the median and came to rest on its top.

Cameron Ambulance transported Cox to Liberty Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

ATCHISON COUNTY, Kan. —One person was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Wednesday in Atchison County.

Kansas man injured after 2-vehicle Atchison Co. crash

A 33-year-old St. Joseph man has been charged with felony
robbery in a carjacking Sunday night.

St. Joseph police report Bryson McCray has been charged after
forcing a couple from their car at gunpoint.

Police accuse McCray of approached the two with a handgun in the
2400 block of Olive Street Sunday night. He forced them out of the
vehicle and fled.

St. Joseph police officers pursued the vehicle and stopped it
at Maple Leaf Parkway and Pendleton. McCray was taken into custody without
incident.

St. Joseph man charged in Sunday carjacking

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 430 officials investigated a reported bomb threat Tuesday morning, according to a statement from school district superintendent Jason Cline and Horton Police Chief Jon Boller.

Just after 8a.m. Tuesday, the school district issued an evacuation procedure after police alerted the school of a reported bomb threat in the city of Horton.

As a precaution, the school district along with local law enforcement activated and implemented the school district's emergency protocols included in the crisis plan.

Local and county law enforcement conducted a search of the Horton Elementary School, 300 East 16th Street and Horton High School, 1120 East First Avenue. After the search, law enforcement and school district officials issued an all clear and returned the schools to normal operation. All staff and students were accounted for, according to Cline.

Police released no additional details and have not reported an arrest.

Kan. school district issued evacuation order due to bomb threat

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft was a prominent
Republican who did not seek his party’s nomination for United States Senate.

Ashcroft says there’s a simple reason why.

“The ultimate reason was I prayed about it and I didn’t think
it was the right thing to do,” Ashcroft tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “But, as a
pretty close second, I don’t want to go to Washington, D.C.”

Ashcroft, the son of John Ashcroft – the former governor and
US Attorney General – says he wants to stay in Missouri and make a difference
in Missouri.

“It seems to me that Washington, D.C. is a place where you go
to be on TV, not to get things done,” Ashcroft says. “And, I don’t want to
raise my kids in Washington, D.C.”

Ashcroft, first elected as Secretary of State in 2016, says he
hasn’t decided on whether he will run for governor. Ashcroft is not seeking
another term as Secretary of State.

“I love the ability that I’ve been given to serve the people
of this state. I’m not going to run for re-election. I think it’s appropriate
to get new blood. If you stay in one seat too long you start to think that it’s
your seat as opposed to the people’s seat,” Ashcroft says. “I do hope that the
people will allow me to serve in some capacity, but now’s not the time to talk
about that.”

Whether Ashcroft runs for governor will depend on a number of
factors.

“I think that if I’m going to run for an office, I have to
believe that I bring something to the race that someone else doesn’t,” Ashcroft
says. “When I was looking at running for Secretary of State, there was no one
that was running that I felt I could support. It also helped when I looked at
the potential of running for U.S. Senate, I knew there were people that would
run if I didn’t that I could support.”

Voters elected Ashcroft as Missouri’s 40th
Secretary of State in 2016 and re-elected him in 2020.

Ashcroft is one of the names that surfaces on potential
successors to Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican who says he will not run for
another term.

Missouri Sec. of State Ashcroft coy about political future

A local biologist says many misconceptions about bats have emerged since news broke that a woman got bit in her home.&nbsp;

A woman in St. Joseph had to undergo a series of rabies shots after the bat bit her. &nbsp;

Biologist Shelly Cox with the Remington Nature Center says there has been so much misinformation spread about bats.&nbsp;

"Through the media, through movies, television programs we get so much coming at us that's in a negative light that we don't really often take time for appreciating them in a positive light, you know what do they contribute to the environment," Cox tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.&nbsp;

Cox says Missouri alone has 14 different species of bats.&nbsp;

"All of them are nocturnal and all of them are insect eating bats," Cox says. "So, these are the bats that are using that echo location they're honing in on all kinds of night flying insects, many of these insects we don't want around us."&nbsp;

Cox says bats also help farmers by eating bugs that will eat and destroy crops in the fields. &nbsp;

Cox says bats do find ways to get into homes.&nbsp;

"Obviously bats get disoriented they're in attics and things happen," Cox explains. "Often times what happens if you have a chimney in your house cold drafts or cooler air tricks the bat into flying down the chimney instead of flying outside and then they end up in your house."&nbsp;

Cox says fluctuations in temperature also force bats to find shelter. Cox advises that if a bat gets in your home, you need to handle it carefully. . .&nbsp;

"So, when you find yourself faced with a bat inside your house just be careful, just make sure you have a thick towel that you're wrapping around it or try not to touch it at all," Cox says. &nbsp;

Cox says you can use a net or something to scoop it up as long as you do not let the bat touch your skin. &nbsp;

Cox will hold a talk next week at Remington Nature Center about bats.&nbsp; Cox says she hopes the presentation will help people gain an appreciation for bats and their role in the environment.&nbsp;

"Cause, you know like I mentioned, the insect eating bats in Missouri but if you look more on a worldwide scale we have nectar bats, we have pollinating bats, we have seed distribution bats which means these are the fruit eating bats," Cox says. &nbsp;

Cox says those fruit eating bats help pick seeds up off the ground and transplant trees and plants.&nbsp;

"So, they benefit us in many, many, many ways," Cox points out.&nbsp;

Cox’s presentation, “Bats A Misunderstood Mammal” will be presented at the Remington Nature Center next Wednesday at 6pm.&nbsp;

Biologist says bats are misunderstood

ATCHISON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Monday in Atchison.

A vehicle&nbsp;driven by Joan Prohaska, 82, Atchison, was maneuvering in a parking lot at the Gran Villa of Atchison in the 1600 block Riley , according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Prohaska lost control of the vehicle and it struck the west side of the building.

EMS transported a 78-year-old resident inside the building to Amerberwell for an examination. She was injured by moving debris from a damaged wall. Prohaska was not injured.

Kan. woman injured after car crash into assisted living center

BUCHANAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 11a.m. Monday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Mazda CXS driven by Lauren A. Welch 77, Overland Park, was southbound on Interstate 29 two miles north of Dearborn.

The SUV struck the towed unit of a MODOT Dump truck driven by Daniel E. Roe, 33, St. Joseph, who was stationary in the passing lane due to mowers up ahead. The tow truck's impact attenuator had a flashing arrow to the right indicating the passing lane was closed.

A MODOT supervisor transported Roe to Concentra Urgent Care in St. Joseph. Buchanan County EMS transported Welch to Mosaic Life Care. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Two hospitalized after SUV rear-ends MODOT dump truck

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on new charges after an arrest.

On Friday, police arrested Kattibrie D. Lynch, 28, Atchison, on a Community Corrections detain order, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Just after noon on Sept. 5, police investigated a burglary of a vehicle that was parked in the 500 block Unity in Atchison, according to Wilson.&nbsp;

The suspect took cash from the vehicle. An investigation led to the arrest of Lynch on a District Court warrant for burglary of a vehicle and theft.&nbsp;

In August she was jailed on a city warrant, according to online jail records.

Kan. woman accused of burglary is back in jail

WORTH COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Monday in Worth County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Sebastian G. Sweat, 23, Albany, was southbound on U.S. 169 five miles south of Grant City.

The driver attempted to turn eastbound onto Route M. He failed to negotiate the turn, traveled off the southeast corner of the intersection and down an embankment.

A private vehicle transported Sweat to a residence and later an ambulance transported him to Mosaic in Albany. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man injured after van travels down embankment

The Missouri Bicentennial Quilt will make its final stop in the city where it was first conceived, being displayed permanently in Hamilton.&nbsp;

Missouri Historical Society spokeswoman Beth Pike says the quilt started as an idea back in 2018, to find a way to bring all of Missouri's diverse population together. &nbsp;

"Teaming up with the Missouri Star Quilt Company and the Missouri State Quilters Guild, the state historical society of Missouri reached out with these groups and went to different counties, every county in the state and looked for and was able to receive a quilt block representing all 114 counties in Missouri," Pike tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. &nbsp;

The Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton was responsible for stitching all the blocks together to form the quilt, which toured Missouri between 2021 and August of this year. &nbsp;

Pike says one thing she noticed as the Bicentennial Quilt toured the state, was people looking for their county to see how it is represented. &nbsp;

"And it's not always a story you might think it might be, for instance, people assume St. Louis would be the St. Louis Arch possibly," Pike explains. "But instead, what you see are words of braille that say the city of St. Louis, and that was because the braille itself was invented, the equipment to created braille the printing press was created in St. Louis."&nbsp;

Pike says she finds the quilt tells a story that many people may not know about all the counties across Missouri. &nbsp;

Pike says the quilt was a collaboration with the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton and it seems only logical for it to come back home.

"Why not bring it back to Hamilton where many of these conversations took place, it was the Missouri Star Quilt Company which actually quilted all the pieces together," Pike says. "So, it felt like in many ways the quilt would be coming back home to Hamilton, Missouri where all of this began."&nbsp;

Pike says the historical society couldn't think of a better place for the quilt to be on permanent display. An opening ceremony at the Missouri Quilt Museum in Hamilton is scheduled for one o'clock tomorrow.&nbsp;

Along with the the Missouri and 4-H Bicentennial quilts, Bicentennial County quilts will also be on display, beginning with the Caldwell County quilt.&nbsp;

Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves opposes
President Biden’s proposal to nearly double the number of IRS agents.

Graves, a Republican, casts doubt on the wisdom
of hiring 87,000 new agents at the Internal Revenue Service, pointing out the
United States has a little more than 3,100 counties.

“You do the math, with 87,000 IRS agents, that
means we’re going to have 27 IRS agents for every single county in the United States,”
Graves tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “So that would be 27 agents for Atchison County,
27 agents for Holt County, 27 agents for Gentry, Dekalb, Buchanan.”

The proposed expansion of the IRS by President Joe
Biden was included in the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Democrats in
Congress. The plan would cost $80 billion and would add about as many agents as
the IRS has now. More than half the allocation is earmarked for enforcement to
ensure compliance with federal tax law.

“This is an army of IRS agents,” Graves says. “This
is absolutely ridiculous and they’re going to be coming after small businesses
that are pass through corporations. That’s who their main focus is going to be.”

The president and his fellow Democrats say the
expansion is needed to crack down on tax cheats.

Graves dismisses suggestions the added agents
will make sure billionaires pay their fair share.

“There are only about 800 billionaires in the
United States. So, why do we need 87,000 IRS agents to cover that?” Graves
asks.

Democrats insists the IRS needs more agents to
collect taxes owed, but not paid, estimated to be as much as $600 billion.

“I fail to see why we need any more IRS agents
than we have, unless it’s for processing refunds, because I know a lot of
people out there, they get tired of waiting for their refund,” according to Graves.
“If you’re late paying your taxes, then you get fined and there’s interest
built on that. But if the federal government takes forever to pay back the
money that they owe you, there’s no consequence to that.”

Congressman Graves opposes plan to double IRS agents

A 45-year-old homeless man has been charged with unlawful use of a
weapon in last week’s shooting on Blackwell Road.

St. Joseph police report Jason Stanton, who lists St. Joseph as his hometown, has been charged in the
shooting in the 2700 block of Blackwell Road.

No one was wounded in the shooting last Tuesday evening around
11 o’clock. Police report officers discovered a pick-up in the ditch with
bullet holes in it. Other evidence of a shooting was found in the roadway. The
driver and a passenger in the pick-up were not wounded.

Officers tracked down Stanton and took him into custody about
half an hour later.

A wheel on the combine crossed the center line and struck the driver's side of a westbound 2003 Ford Excursion driven by Ronald J. Chadwick, 41, Albany. Both vehicles came to a controlled stop.

Grand River EMS transported Chadwick to Mosaic in Albany. Tatum was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Volvo semi driven by Joseph Ngendahimana, 49, Kansas, was northbound on Interstate 29 two miles north of Corning.

The truck traveled off the east side of the road, began to skid, overturned and the towed unit detached.&nbsp;

Atchison-Holt Ambulance transported Ngendahimana to Mosaic in St. Joseph. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

A recent meth bust points to the growing drug problem in Buchanan County. &nbsp;

Captain Shawn Collie says officers are seeing more instances of fentanyl, but more common has been a growing problem of methamphetamine.&nbsp;

"We're seeing a lot of meth and the heroin obviously goes along with some of the fentanyl," Collie tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But our meth and heroin cases are still kind of an everyday thing that we're seeing that's still on the increase as well, and they're reaching levels that we just haven't seen before in the past."&nbsp;

Collie says the Buchanan County Drug Task Force has been working to raise awareness and educate both the community and schools about the dangers of drugs. &nbsp;

Collie says methamphetamines and heroin seem to be the most common cases when officers are called.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately, we're seeing that right off the bat, but then through our lab analysis and other stuff then we're seeing where the fentanyl is being mixed in," Collie explains. "But, just the pure fentanyl type seizures they're up there but they're not as common still as heroin and methamphetamines."&nbsp;

Collie says officers are working to be proactive and keep on top of cases in St. Joseph. &nbsp;

Collie with the Buchanan County Drug Task Force says there have been changes to the drug trade, shifting more online to social media. &nbsp;

"People may think that they're impossible to detect, which isn't true, but they are&nbsp;definitely&nbsp;are harder to detect than the days where we just used to have the people out on the streets or just doing stuff out in the open," Collie says. "Now, a lot of it seems to be more concealed within the homes or concealed through different kinds of electronic apps."&nbsp;

Collie says the most common drug cases the task force works involves methamphetamines and heroine, but officers have spotted more and more fentanyl.&nbsp;

Buchanan County Drug Task Force says drug problem still growing following bust

The Missouri Highway Patrol has reopened both lanes of I-29 in far northwestern Missouri after clearing hazardous material from the roadway.

I-29 was closed from mile marker 99 to mile marker 107 due to a wreck involving a tanker truck carrying fuel.  The truck overturned in a construction zone forcing the closure so crews could clean up the mess.  The closure lasted just around four hours. 

The patrol has reopened both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-29.  The northbound passing lane has been reopened, with that stretch operating as a construction zone.

I-29 reopened after crews clean up mess from tanker accident

Missouri
voters will have to show photo identification to cast a ballot in the November
8th General Election.

Secretary
of State Jay Ashcroft defends the change to require photo identification,
saying it’s part of the effort to make Missouri elections accessible, secure,
and credible.

“Photo
ID, government-issued photo ID, is a great way for some people to have more
confidence in the process,” Ashcroft tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “It’s also a
great way if someone does vote illegally or votes both in Missouri and in
Florida, like we saw with a couple of people in 2020, it allows us to prosecute
them for that as we should.”

Ashcroft
defends the requirement, justifying photo identification as one of the goals of
election officials.

“It
harkens back to we want to make sure that we have accessibility, security and
we have credibility,” according to Ashcroft. “And we wanted to layer in things.
As long as we made sure, first and foremost, that every registered voter could
vote, we also wanted to make sure we made the election secure and people would
believe the results.”

Ashcroft
denies allegations by Democrats and others that the ID requirement will
suppress the vote of minorities, the elderly, and others.

“They’ve
sued us multiple times. They’ve made all sorts of allegations to the press. They’ve
made all sorts of allegations at rallies. But, when they had to swear to it in
the court of law, they’ve never been able to point to a single person that wouldn’t
be able to vote,” asserts Ashcroft.

A judge in Jefferson City has dismissed a lawsuit filed against
the requirement.

Cole County Judge
Jon Beetem's order on Wednesday means that voters without a photo ID will have
to file a provisional ballot in the November election. The provisional ballot
will only be counted if the voter returns later that day with a photo ID or if
election officials verify their signatures.

The lawsuit was
filed on behalf of two women, but Beetem wrote that neither “has alleged a
specific, concrete, non-speculative injury or legally protectable interest in
challenging the photo ID requirement.”

Officials with the groups that challenged the voter ID law on
behalf of the women called the ruling “procedural" and said it doesn't
address the merits of their argument. They said the case will end up before the
Missouri Supreme Court, which they said has twice previously struck down
less-restrictive requirements.

“Missouri’s
Constitution provides all Missourians with the fundamental right to vote,” a
statement from the ACLU of Missouri and the Missouri Voter Protection Coalition
said. “Voter ID restrictions disenfranchise Missourians, particularly people of
color, people with disabilities, rural Missourians, voters with limited income,
seniors and students.”

great way if someone does vote illegally or votes both in Missouri and in
Florida, like we saw with a couple of people in 2020, it allows us to prosecute

harkens back to we want to make sure that we have accessibility, security and
we have credibility,” according to Ashcroft. “And we wanted to layer in things.
As long as we made sure, first and foremost, that every registered voter could
vote, we also wanted to make sure we made the election secure and people would

denies allegations by Democrats and others that the ID requirement will
suppress the vote of minorities, the elderly, and others.“They’ve
sued us multiple times. They’ve made all sorts of allegations to the press. They’ve
made all sorts of allegations at rallies. But, when they had to swear to it in
the court of law, they’ve never been able to point to a single person that wouldn’t
