A 30-year-old St. Joseph man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for driving drunk and causing a head-on fatal crash on the Belt Highway a year ago that killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Steven Ayala pleaded guilty last month to driving while intoxicated and crashing into the vehicle driven by 26-year-old Savannah Domann, killing her and her unborn child, Raydyn Kay Erickson.

Court documents indicate Ayala’s blood alcohol content was 0.15, nearly double the legal limit. Ayala also confessed to having had used narcotics and sedatives prior to the wreck on South Belt Highway near Sacramento Street.

Buchanan County Circuit Judge Pat Robb handed down the maximum sentence for the charge.
