Nine candidates appear on the ballot for Governor. Six
Republicans are campaigning for the nomination for Lieutenant Governor. Eight
candidates vie for the Secretary of State nominee, with six for Treasurer, and
two for Attorney General.

Locally, voters will decide a 59-cent St. Joseph School
District levy increase to pay for a $2,750 flat pay raise for teachers and all
staff for the St. Joseph School District. St. Joseph city officials are asking
local voters to extend the local 3.8% use tax for the next 10
years.

Two state constitutional amendments will be decided by
Missouri voters today. One would provide a property tax break for child care
providers. The other would require Kansas City to spend at least 25% of
its budget on policing.

The big race in Kansas is the 2nd Congressional
District of eastern Kansas. Five Republicans and two Democrats are in the race
to succeed Republican Congressman Jake LaTurner who decided against running for a third term in Congress.

The Republicans on the ballot are Derek Schmidt, Jeff Kahrs,
Shawn Tiffany, and Chad Young. The Democrats running are Nancy Boyda and Matt Kleinmann.

The polls in
both states close at seven this evening.

Voters face big decisions today

NODAWAY COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured and later arrested after an accident that occurred Sunday evening in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Taylor R. Coffelt, 24, Ravenwood, was westbound on U.S. 136 west of Neon Road one and one half miles west of Ravenwood.

The SUV traveled off the north side of the road, started skidding and the driver overcorrected. The SUV returned to the road, traveled off the south side of the road, struck an embankment, overturned, struck the embankment again and came to rest on its wheels in the ditch.

Coffelt refused treatment at the scene and a private vehicle later transported her to Mosaic in Maryville.&nbsp; She was also arrested on requested charges that include driving while intoxicated-drugs, operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manor involving an accident and no seat belt, according to the MSHP.

to give $2,750 to every employee in the school district,” Edgar tells host

means, every para-educator, every food service employee, every operations,
every teacher, every administrator, every single employee is going to get $2,750.”

If the
issue passes, the St. Joseph School District would waive Proposition C funding
from the state in exchange for the 59-cent increase in the local tax levy. It
would raise an estimated $7.1 million annually. Proposition C was approved by
Missouri voters in 1982, dedicating a one cent sales tax to public education if
districts reduced their property tax levy. Nearly all school districts in
Missouri have waived Proposition C in favor of local funding.

Edgar
says St. Joseph has suffered in attempting to attract and keep teachers,
because of the district’s low salaries.

“You don’t
go into public education to get rich. You go into public education, because you
have a calling. You go into public education for students. Some people do make
decent money at the end of their careers,” Edgar says. “Whenever you start in
public education, you’re not doing it to become rich, I can promise you that.”

Edgar
says the St. Joseph base teacher annual pay of $40,000 is lower than all but one
of its 15 neighboring districts. An increase to $42,750 would make the St. Joseph
School District more competitive in recruiting teachers.

“So, we’ll
go up to right below Savannah, which is at $43,000,” Edgar says. “We’ll bypass
Plattsburg, East Buch, Mid Buch, Blue Springs, and Raytown and then be right
below Cameron and Savannah.”

Cameron
pays teachers a base wage of $43,100 while Savannah has a base teacher pay of
$43,000.

St. Joseph voters decide teacher pay issue Tuesday

After a controversial start to his NFL career, new Chiefs punter Matt Araiza is getting a fresh start in Kansas City during Training Camp in St. Joseph.

Araiza was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2022, but they cut him after sexual assualt allegations. 

Araiza says he wasn't sure if he would ever get a shot in the league again.

"There were times that I didn't, and there were times that I did, it honestly kept going back and forth in my mind," Araiza tells reporters after practice.  "But yeah there was a lot of moments where I thought it was over, so I'm incredibly grateful to be here."

The lawsuit against Araiza was dropped in December.  Kansas City signed the punter in February.

Araiza has a unique trait that not many NFL punters have. He punts with his left foot. 

Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub has said that's what made signing Araiza appealing, because the ball just comes differently off the left foot. 

Araiza also says he feels like that gives him an advantage. 

"I've punted with a lot of guys in the NFL, a lot of guys come to San Diego during the offseason and train, and the one thing I have over everyone is how much my punts move," Araiza says. "I've caused a ton of drops here, and I'm looking to see that on Sundays I think that will be great, someone muffs a punt that is a huge game changing play."

One fan of Araiza is his head coach Andy Reid

"I like him, just keep working, consistency always as you go, but you can see it I mean he's booming the thing," Reid says. "Be curious to see it in games, let's see how he does there."

Araiza, who has been coined with the nickname 'Punt God', says it will be pretty surreal to step on the field on Sundays after believing his career might have been over.

The Chiefs practiced for just over two hours today.  The only new injury reported from Reid was Chris Jones who took what he called a "stinger" to the shoulder. 

The Chiefs practice again tomorrow on the Missouri Western campus in St. Joseph at 9:15.  It is the last public practice this week before Saturday's preseason game.

he makes his pitch for why Missouri Republicans should support his nomination for
governor.

Eigel made a stop at Rosecrans Memorial Airport, one of seven
cities he is visiting on this last day before the primary election.

While many perceive this election to be a three-way race among
Eigel, Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe, and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, Eigel sees
it as a two-person race.

“Well, right now the polls say it’s exactly tied. The polling that
we’ve looked at and we’ve been keeping an eye on says it’s tied between (Lt.)
Gov. Kehoe and I, but there remained a pretty significant number of undecideds,”
Eigel tells reporters during his stop at Rosecrans. “Historically, the undecideds,
we’re hoping they continue to break for the candidate that’s the
anti-establishment candidate.”

Missouri has overwhelmingly voted Republican the last few election
cycles making this race the likely outcome in November.

“The Republican Party is the pro-life party. The Republican Party
is the one that’s trying to deliver more limited, smaller government. I’ve got
some criticisms, of course, of some of my opponents that haven’t really made
good on those promises, but if you look at the national Democratic brand, they’re
talking about defunding the police. They’re talking about the destruction of our
families and our children. That message isn’t resonating,” according to Eigel. “So,
I do think the winner of tomorrow is going to have a heavy influence on the
General Election in November.”

Polls open tomorrow morning at six o’clock.

Sen. Eigel makes pitch for governor in state fly-around

Nearly 1,900 school supply items were donated for needy
students during the annual Stuff the Bus drive.

The United Way of Greater St. Joseph reports community members
donated 18,962 items at both Wal Marts in St. Joseph. The United Way
reports $1,700 was donated as well.

More than 300,000 school supply items have been donated
since the United Way began the Stuff the Bus drive began in 2009.

School supplies will be distributed through United Way partner
agencies, including the Salvation Army.

Mosaic Life Care, Walmart, and First Student bus company
contribute to the school supply drive.

United Way reports another successful Stuff the Bus campaign

Months of campaigning and TV ad wars will come to a close Tuesday, as Missouri voters head to the polls to pick their party’s nominee for Congress, the state legislature and nearly every statewide office.&nbsp;

The Independent tried to answer some of the questions you may have about voting in Missouri’s primary.&nbsp;

Polls across the state open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voters in line by 7 p.m. are entitled to cast a ballot.

Before you head out the door, check your voter registration and polling location at&nbsp;<a href="http://govotemissouri.com/" target="_blank">GoVoteMissouri.com</a>.&nbsp;

Some local election officials said the state’s website has the most up-to-date information on the new polling sites. Others recommended going directly to the county’s website or calling local officials instead. The GoVoteMissouri.com website will also provide the information you need to contact your local election authority.

How do I find out what’s on the ballot?

Local election authorities provide sample ballots, which voters can study, fill out and bring with them on Election Day to use as a guide. They are typically posted on your county’s website. Researching your ballot ahead of time will help cut down on the time you spend at the polls, and local election officials are encouraging voters to do this.

Registered Missouri voters will&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sos.mo.gov/voterid" target="_blank">need a photo ID issued by Missouri or the federal government</a>&nbsp;in order to vote.&nbsp;

If you do not have any of these forms of identification, but are a registered voter, you may cast a provisional ballot. Your ballot will count if you return to your polling place on Election Day with a photo ID, or the signature on your provisional ballot envelope is determined by your local election authority to match the signature on your voter registration record.

If you cast a provisional ballot, you will receive a stub from your provisional ballot envelope with instructions on how to verify that your provisional ballot is counted.

An adjustment this NFL season for fans, players and coaches alike will be to a new kickoff rule.  

People got their first look at the rule during Thursday's Hall of Fame game between the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans.  

Chiefs Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub says he was excited to see it in action in an actual game 

"Couldn't wait to see it, I was like everybody else was I was the same way," Toub tells reporters after practice. "I thought there might've been a couple bigger returns, but they kept it kind of vanilla especially in this first game, but you've got a lot more games coming up here Thursday and Friday I guess."

Preseason will be the big evaluation period for how to play into the new kickoff rules.  

Toub says kicker Harrison Butker has spent a lot of time preparing for the new kickoff 

"In the afternoon we're inside, we're kicking off in there, we're working kickoffs inside," Toub says. "So, he wants to kick off all the time, so we've done a lot experimenting with that, and he's got a variety of kicks." 

As the Chiefs special teams unit adjusts to a new kickoff rule, they also continue to search for who could be back returning kicks and punts.  

One option is third year receiver Skyy Moore who has had his struggles producing for the Chiefs since being drafted two years ago.  

Moore says that he sees more opportunities to make an impact in the return game with the new kickoff rules 

"I see the benefit in putting that rule in, it's definitely going to make the game more exciting, more kickoff return opportunities, so I'm excited for that for sure," Moore says. 

It was a lighter practice today for the Chiefs as they held a "10-10-10 practice. 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays, 10 minutes of special teams cycling, practicing for just under two hours. 

The Chiefs return to the practice fields tomorrow at 9:15 for the first of three more practices this week ahead of Saturday's preseason game.

During a lighter practice on Sunday for the Chiefs there were no new additions to the injury report, but there were a handful of players that returned to practice. 

Cornerback Jaylen Watson, who returned to practice on Friday in a yellow non-contact jersey, was back in his normal jersey as he hit the practice field.  Also returning to practice was safety Deon Bush and receiver Justin Watson. Both had missed part of training camp with ankle injuries. 

After leaving practice on Friday with a slight shoulder injury, offensive tackle Wanya Morris was also back at practice on Sunday.&nbsp; Cornerback Nahzee Johnson was also back at practice today.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Honda Rancher 4-wheeler driven by Aiden T. Foster, 19, Hale, was eastbound on LIV 230th at LIV 277th two miles north of Wheeling. The vehicle traveled through a T-intersection, through a fence, struck a guy wire, overturned and the driver was ejected.

A private vehicle transported Foster to Hedrick Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Mo. man injured after 4-wheeler crash through a fence

ANDREW COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Kia Soul driven by Deanna L. Stewart, 47, St. Joseph, was northbound on U.S. 71 two miles west of Savannah.

The car traveled off the east side of the road, struck an embankment, rolled and came to rest on its wheels facing south in the northbound lanes.

Andrew County EMS transported Stewart to Mosaic Life Care. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Woman from St. Joe hospitalized after rollover crash

ANDREW COUNTY —A Missouri man was injured and accused of driving while intoxicated after an accident that occurred just before 11:30p.m. Friday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Yamaha WR 450 driven by Kiefer R. Gillenwater, 27, Fillmore, was southbound on Route H one mile south of Fillmore. The driver lost control of the motorcycle. The vehicle fell over and slid across the road.&nbsp; Gillenwater was ejected and left the crash scene.&nbsp;

GENTRY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Friday in Gentry County.

The Chiefs made a splash during free agency signing veteran quarterback Carson Wentz as their new backup to replace Blaine Gabbert who became a free agent.  

Wentz, whose been in the league eight years and started for several teams, provides a solid backup option for Patrick Mahomes.  

In what he's seen from Mahomes working alongside him, Wentz jokingly made an obvious observation 

"He's pretty good, not that I needed to learn that physically being here" Wentz jokes with reporter's post-practice.  "Just kind of the way he sees the game is unique and the way he plays and just the anticipation he plays with, sometimes its maybe not the main throw on a play but he's making things work, so it's just cool to kind of see not only the offense come together but just how he sees it maybe a little different at times." 

When it comes to backup quarterbacks the Chiefs have had rare misses of late when it comes to guys ready to step up when needed.  

Chad Henne, Blaine Gabbert, and this year it's Wentz.

Head Coach Andy Reid says he's been pleased with Wentz thus far in the backup role 

"Really like what I've seen from him, he's got a real good feel for the game, smart kid, real smart, and has picked it up quickly," Reid says.  

Chiefs' fans have been privy to the unique playstyle of Mahomes for a few years now. 

Wentz has also known about it and is getting an up-close look during this year's training camp.  

Wentz says the outstanding things Mahomes can do is just a kid playing ball 

"Playing street ball out there at times is sometimes the joke back there," Wentz explains. "Truthfully I can relate to some of that over my career, that's kind of just how I've seen the game, so it's fun to see it work so well the way he does it." 

The Chiefs are off tomorrow after a two-hour practice today.  They are back on Sunday at 9:15 when there is a $5 admission fee.

One Chiefs player that had been sitting out of practice returned during Friday's practice, and two more were injured but not much else changed from the previous injury report.

State Treasurer Vivek Malek is making his final pitch before Republican voters
decide their nominee for his job, visiting with Buchanan County Republicans in
St. Joseph Thursday.

Gov.
Mike Parson appointed Malek Treasurer after then-Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick
won election as state Auditor.

Malek,
new to politics, says he has enjoyed the campaign.

“I
enjoyed meeting with great people of our state,” Malek tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post. “They have been very warm, welcoming, and open-minded and open-hearted to
my coming to their offices, homes. It has been a great experience.”

Next
week’s Republican primary in Missouri is crowded, up and down the ballot, as
several state legislators and others file for open seats for statewide office.
Nine Republicans are on the ballot for governor, hoping to succeed Gov. Parson.
The decisions by Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft to run
for governor left their seats open. State Sen. Bill Eigel of Weldon Springs is
the other major Republican candidate for governor. Both Malek and Attorney
General Andrew Bailey were appointed by Parson and are running for a full term
in office.

Malek
speculates many Republicans saw him as merely a placeholder who wouldn’t run
for the office.

Five
Republican challengers entered the race, highlighted by state Sen. Andrew
Koenig of Manchester and state Rep. Cody Smith of Carthage. Also on the ballot
are Tina Goodrick of St. Joseph, Lori Rook of Springfield, and Kara Pujji of
Berkeley.

If
nominated by Republicans and elected in November, Malek would like to introduce
two new programs in the Treasurer’s office.

Malek
says he will ask the legislature to make a financial literacy course mandatory
for all Missouri high school students. He also wants to create investment pools
that would allow small local governments to combine assets to get a greater
return on investment.

Malek
was born in Rohtak, India. He earned a bachelors
and law degrees in India before coming to Southeast Missouri State University in
Cape Girardeau for a master of business administration in August of 2001.

Treasurer Malek makes final pitch before Tue GOP primary

A major legislative piece outlining management of the nation’s
rivers as well as funding improvements to the country’s ports and harbors has
passed both the House and Senate in Washington, D.C.

The versions from the two chambers differ, though.

Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves guided the
legislation, called the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), through the
House as chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“This is extremely important to those of us in north Missouri,
whether you’re on the east side of my district along the Mississippi or the
west side of my district along the Missouri River, this has huge impacts when
it comes to river management,” Graves tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Graves, a Republican, says the legislation takes significant
steps toward making sure flood control and navigation are the top priorities in
managing the Missouri River as well as the Mississippi. The House version makes
changes to the federal PL 84-99 program managed by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. The program guides the repair and rebuilding of river levees. Graves
says it will give local communities more control in rebuilding levees damaged
by floodwaters, such as those harmed during the 2019 Missouri River flood.

Graves has been fighting to change the priorities governing
how the Army Corps of Engineers manages rivers. The Congressman wants the Corps
to consider flood control and navigation higher priorities that environmental
concerns, such as protecting endangered species.

“This goes a long way toward supporting policies that
encourage that and push for that and makes sure that that happens rather than pushing
policies and projects that obviously benefit other priorities instead of
managing the river to make sure that we don’t devastate people’s lives,” Graves
says.

The House approved WRDA by a nearly unheard of 359-13 vote on
July 22nd. The Senate approved its version Thursday.

Graves feels confident differences between the House and
Senate can be worked out this year so the bill can go to President Biden.

“There are some differences, not significant, but there are some
differences in the way we approach projects and reporting by the Corps of
Engineers,” Graves says. “There are a few differences, but nothing insurmountable
that we can’t get worked out.”

Legislation guiding management of the Missouri River on verge of passing

CLINTON COUNTY —A juvenile was injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Thursday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1989 Coolster 4-wheeler driven by a 9-year-old Kidder Missouri girl was northbound in a private yard on Locust Street in Kidder.

The vehicle struck a T-post and overturned. Caldwell County ambulance transported the girl to Children's Mercy. She was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

9-year-old Missouri girl injured in 4-wheeler accident

ANDREW COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Thursday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Kia Sportage driven by Joshua L. Pike, 34, King City was southbound on U.S. 169 at Avenue City. The Kia traveled into the northbound lane attempting to pass another vehicle and struck a northbound 1999 Peterbilt semi driven by Raymond R. Younger, 50, St. Joseph, head-on.

Lifeflight transported Pike to Truman Medical Center.&nbsp; Andrew County EMS transported Younger to Mosaic and then to Research Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Kansas City Chiefs defense is still discovering its identity during training camp, working to replace some key pieces from last year's squad.  

With a defense full of new faces, people have had to learn new roles to step in and fill holes left after the losses of guys like L'Jarius Sneed and Willie Gay.  

But overall, safety Bryan Cook feels while everything does take time, the defense is developing well. 

"Everything that you want to be polishing away so that we can be able to compete at our highest level come the regular season, you're going to take little rinks and kinks," Cook tells reporter's post-practice. "Obviously LJ went on and moved on, and props to him, but now we have the opportunity to come together as a team with new faces and new guys to be brought into the system, so it's a challenge but we're looking pretty good so far." 

The Chief's secondary has had their work cut out for them during training camp, being challenged by some speedy receivers 

Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Mecole Hardman, all guys who run a sub 4.5 40.  

Cook says being challenged by all that speed has been great. 

"4.3, 4.2, 4.3, 4.2, so that's a lot of work on our back end but every day we keep grinding, we get a chance to compete with them on the highest level," Cook explains. "Obviously 15 (Mahomes) throwing the pill the way he is, so just every day is a competition, every day we look forward to it." 

In fact, during today's practice Worthy burned past Cook for what would have been a 50-yard score.  

The past week of practice has seen Brown, Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Hardman all on the field at the same time making plays.  

Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy says they're very optimistic about this year's receiving room, but it's important to get them to work together. 

"Being able to put those three guys together in unison schematically, learning how to win versus man, having a great feel and learning how to get open for Pat in zone, Kelce is phenomenal at that versus zone, so they get to watch Kelce in zone," Nagy says. "So, it's important that the three of those guys get together and we can move them around like pieces of the puzzle." 

The Chiefs practice again tomorrow at 9:15.

One new player was added to the injury report during Thursday's practice, while everyone who left practice on Wednesday remained out.  

Safety Deon Bush was absent from practice today with an ankle injury.  Nick Bolton remained sidelined with an elbow injury and Kadarius Toney sat out practice with an ankle injury.

Chiefs secondary put to the test during training camp by new, speedy receivers

The United Way of Greater St. Joseph's annual Stuff the Bus school supplies drive is once again taking place this Friday and Saturday.

Director of Community Investment, Jodi Flurry, says, "This is our biggest one-time volunteer activity every single year. Last year, almost 250 people shared their time by volunteering for Stuff the Bus, helping to collect those school supplies during tax free weekend."

Certain items this weekend are tax free during the Missouri Back to School Sales Tax Holiday.

Flurry says if it weren't for the Stuff the Bus drive, some area students might not have school supplies.&nbsp;

"With cost increases, it gets harder and harder to provide some of those items students need when they go back to school. Through the generosity of our community, we're able to help out a lot of families."

Since 2009, United Way's Stuff the Bus drive has collected and distributed more than 281,000 school supplies to area children, classroom and programs.
