SHAWNEE COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just before 10a.m.&nbsp; June 6, a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop of a white 2023 GMC Terrain for a traffic violation on eastbound Interstate 470 Highway near SW Burlingame Road, according to Shawnee County Deputy Shayna Anderson.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle deputies discovered a large amount of illegal drugs.

John W. Roberts II, 46, of Indiana, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of a hallucinogenic drug with intent to distribute and felony possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a statement from the city, most public facing systems are now back in service with some limited exceptions.

Water metering, billing and payment processing systems are coming back online. Customers should expect to begin receiving updated statements this week. Auto-payments are functioning as normal, and customers should now have access to their utility accounts online. Bills may be paid via credit card, cash, check and money order by coming to City Hall, accessing your water account online at https://link.wichita.gov, by calling (316) 265-1300 or mailing payment.

Please be aware, due to the cyber incident, which impaired processing bills and payments, some June bills will be for more than 60 days of service. If necessary, please speak with a representative by calling (316) 265-1300 for a payment arrangement and to work out a plan to get your account caught up on payment activity.

City of Wichita slowly restoring services after cyberattack

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Monday morning homicide near the Kansas City Power and Light District.

Just before 1a.m., police responded to report of a shooting near&nbsp;Truman Road and Grand Boulevard, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte'.&nbsp; 

First responders found a man on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot trauma. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Police also found two other shooting victims in a parking area behind a business. The two women were transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Since there was a large crowd on the scene, police are hopeful someone may have information leading to an arrest.

Detectives were on the scene to gather evidence, talk with witnesses and review surveillance footage.&nbsp; Anyone who may have information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.&nbsp;

Shooting near KC Power & Light District: 1 dead, 2 injured

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—A bear at a Kansas zoo caused some excitement over the weekend.

On Sunday, the staff at Ralph Mitchell Zoo, 400 Mickey Mantle Way in Independence,&nbsp; discovered one of its three Siberian bear sisters had apparently decided zoo life had become unbearable and made an unsuccessful attempt to tunnel out of her enclosure, according to a media release from the city.

While the bear never made it out of the enclosure confines, she did manage to dig under the viewing platform and slip barely out of sight of staff for very brief period of time. Staff quickly responded to the situation, coaxed the bear back into the security of her pen and are taking steps to reinforce the enclosure to eliminate any chance of a future breakout.

   To fully ensure public safety while the bear was misbehaving, staff cleared the zoo of all visitors and locked the secondary enclosure within five minutes of discovering the dig, and within 10 minutes, had the bear back safely secured in the enclosure. Per protocol, the Independence Police Department was notified of the issue and responded to the zoo to provide any necessary assistance.

   “Safety of our visitors is always our number one priority, followed by the well-being of our animals, so I am very thankful for the quick actions of the zoo staff and responding officers to avert danger,” said Independence City Manager Kelly Passauer.

    The bear sisters will be off public exhibit for the next few days as staff continue to make modifications and reinforcements to their enclosure.

Bear attempted to tunnel out of enclosure at Kansas zoo

&nbsp;During the weekend Downtown Days festival, the Lee’s Summit Police Department had a large contingent of officers present during all hours of the festival. 

Just after 10p.m. Saturday, po lice were alerted to the sound of shots fired in the area of SW 3rd and Jefferson just outside of the festival boundary. 

 Officers responded quickly to the area and did not locate any suspects or victims; all parties involved had quickly left the area.  In addition to this incident, officers did handle several small disturbance calls within the festival.

  Officers also observed several members of the juvenile crowd attempting to create artificial panic incidents by running and acting as if an emergency was occurring. 

 During one of these incidents, an elderly woman was pushed to the ground by the running crowd; she was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.  Officers worked the festival through its conclusion on Sunday.&nbsp; No other injuries were reported.

One missile struck M/V Tavvishi, a Liberian-flagged, Swiss owned  and operated container ship. M/V Tavvishi reported damage but has continued  underway. The second missile was successfully destroyed by a coalition ship. There were no injuries reported by U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels. 

Separately, Iranian terrorists&nbsp; launched one ballistic missile and one anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) into the Gulf of Aden. Both missiles struck M/V Norderney, an Antigua and Barbados flagged, German owned and operated cargo ship. M/V Norderney reported damage but has continued underway. There were no injuries reported by U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels. 

Additionally, U.S. forces successfully destroyed one drone over the Gulf of Aden. Later, US forces successfully destroyed two Houthi land attack cruise missiles (LACM) and one missile launcher in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man is going to prison for a drug sale death.

&nbsp;Last week, Mason Duane Robinson, 28, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 49 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for distribution of a controlled substance in a case related to the fentanyl-overdose death of a Lawrence woman, according to Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez.

“One fentanyl-laced pill can have a devastating impact on so many,” District Attorney Valdez said. “The resolve to stem the tide of this epidemic by my office and our law enforcement partners remains steadfast.”

Judge Sally Pokorny also sentenced Robinson, who pleaded no contest in April, to 24 months of post-release supervision. Robinson must register as a drug offender for 15 years.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on April 14, 2022, when a 23-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in front of a home in the 1900 block of Miller Drive in Lawrence.&nbsp;

Jusst after 11p.m. June 6,&nbsp;a Sheriff’s Deputy near Mayetta, observed a gray Honda Accord with a Kansas license plate and the vehicle’s registration was expired. However, the plate contained a current 2025 sticker, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

A Jackson County K-9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs and or narcotics within the vehicle. A probable cause search was conducted and revealed illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and multiple open alcohol containers within the vehicle.

The driver was identified as&nbsp;Earl T Kuhn III,&nbsp;61, of Topeka, and&nbsp;passenger identified&nbsp;as&nbsp;David W Brooks, 58, of Topeka.

Kuhn III was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of THC, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia,&nbsp;transporting an open container, driving while a habitual violator, operating a vehicle with expired registration, improper registration, and&nbsp;no proof of insurance.

Brooks was arrested on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of THC, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and&nbsp;transporting an open container.

Kan. deputy found multiple open alcohol containers in car

A company that makes tests for lead poisoning has agreed to resolve criminal charges that it concealed for years a malfunction that resulted in inaccurately low results.

It’s the latest in a long-running saga involving Massachusetts-based Magellan Diagnostics, which will&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ma/pr/magellan-diagnostics-agrees-plead-guilty-and-pay-42-million-resolve-criminal-charges">pay $42 million in penalties</a>, according to the Department of Justice.

While many of the fault-prone devices were used from 2013 to 2017, some were being recalled&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CCDPHP/DEODC/CLPPB/CDPH%20Document%20Library/magellan_fact_sheet_20211203_ADA_v2.pdf">as late as 2021</a>. The Justice Department said the malfunction produced inaccurate results for “potentially tens of thousands” of children and other patients.

Doctors don’t consider any level of lead in the blood to be safe, especially for children. Several U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., and Flint, Michigan, have struggled with widespread lead contamination of their water supplies in the last two decades, making accurate tests critical for public health.

It’s possible faulty Magellan kits were used to test children for lead exposure into the early 2020s, based on the recall in 2021. Here’s what parents should know.

The inaccurate results came from three Magellan devices: LeadCare Ultra, LeadCare II, and LeadCare Plus. The agency said 2013 testing indicated the same flaw affected the LeadCare II device. A 2021 recall included most of all three types of test kits distributed since October 27, 2020.

The company said in a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.magellandx.com/resources/magellan-diagnostics-announces-voluntary-resolution-of-federal-investigation/">press release</a>&nbsp;announcing the resolution that “the underlying issues that affected the results of some of Magellan’s products from 2013 to 2018 have been fully and effectively remediated,” and that the tests it currently sells are safe.

Children are often tested during pediatrician visits at age 1 and again at age 2. Elevated lead levels can put kids at risk of developmental delay, lower IQ, and other problems. And symptoms, such as stomachache, poor appetite, or irritability, may not appear until high levels are reached.

Falsely low test results could mean parents and physicians were unaware of the problem.

That’s a concern because treatment for lead poisoning is, initially, mainly preventive. Results showing elevated levels should prompt parents and health officials to determine the sources of lead and take steps to prevent continued lead intake, said Janine Kerr, health educator with the Virginia Department of Health’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/leadsafe/">Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program</a>.

Children can be exposed to lead in a variety of ways, including by drinking water contaminated with lead from old pipes, such as in Flint and Washington; ingesting lead-based paint flakes often found in older homes; or, as reported recently, eating some&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-elevated-lead-chromium-levels-cinnamon-applesauce-pouches-november-2023">brands of cinnamon-flavored applesauce.</a>

“Parents can contact their child’s pediatrician to determine if their child had a blood lead test with a LeadCare device” and discuss whether a repeat blood lead test is needed, said&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://profiles.mountsinai.org/maida-p-galvez">Maida Galvez</a>, a pediatrician and professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.

During an earlier recall of some Magellan devices, in 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-warns-americans-about-risk-inaccurate-results-certain-lead-tests">recommended that patients be retested</a>&nbsp;if they were pregnant, nursing, or children younger than 6 and had a blood lead level of less than 10 micrograms per deciliter as determined by a Magellan device from a venous blood draw.

The 2021 recall of Magellan devices recommended retesting children whose results were less than the current CDC reference level of 3.5 micrograms per deciliter. Many of those tests were of the finger-stick variety.

Kerr, at the Virginia health department, said her agency has not had many calls about that recall.

The finger-stick tests “are not that widely used in Virginia,” said Kerr, adding that “we did get a lot of questions about the applesauce recall.”

In any case, she said, the “best course of action for parents is to talk with a health care provider.”

Thousands of children got tested for lead with faulty devices: What parents should know

SHAWNEE COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just before 2:30 a.m. June 6, police&nbsp; were dispatched to the 405 NW Lyman in Topeka reference a burglary alarm at the business, according to Police Lt. Manuel Munoz.

Officers saw an individual inside the business committing a burglary. The suspect ran out the side door and was apprehended a short distance from the business.

As a result of the investigation, Donald R. Kansas man caught running from business burglary

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged strong-armed robbery in Overland Park.

Just after 8p.m. Saturday, police responded to Shawnee Mission Parkway and Foster Street in Overland Park, according to Police Captain Ray Tisinger.&nbsp;

Officers found a robbery victim who&nbsp;received minor injuries. A suspect fled the area in a Gray SUV. Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

Police searching for suspect in Kansas strong-armed robbery 

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the attempted armed robberies of postal carriers in the Kansas City community of Westport and are offering a reward, according to a bulletin from the The United States Postal Inspection Service.

A $150,000 reward has been offered for information into the attempted armed robberies of two postal carriers in Westport.

On Wednesday, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uspis.gov/" target="_blank">U.S. Postal Inspection Service</a>&nbsp;announced that a $150,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for the attempted armed robbery of two separate postal carriers at different locations in Westport.

Just before 5:30p.m. May 29, law enforcement officials reported three black men were seen approaching postal carriers in the 200 block of Westport Road and in the 3900 block of Warwick Boulevard.

One suspects was armed with a handgun and pointed the weapon at both victims. The suspects were observed in a red 2011 Dodge Charger.&nbsp; The car was reported stolen. The vehicle’s rear passenger window is also broken.

The Postal Service warned residents not to take any steps to apprehend any of the suspects. If you have information on the crime you are to call the Postal Service at 1-877-876-2455 and say “law enforcement.”

DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man is going&nbsp; to prison for a crime during a shopping trip to Walmart.

Last week, a judge sentenced Maurice Anthony Mahan, 53, of Lawrence,&nbsp; to 16 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for making a criminal threat, according&nbsp; to&nbsp;Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez.

In April a jury found him guilty.&nbsp; The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on June 21, 2023, when Mahan placed items in a suitcase while at the Walmart Superstore, located at 3300 Iowa Street and left the store without paying for the items. 

When a store employee told Mahan to stop, Mahan threatened to shoot the employee before walking away. Lawrence police officers arrested Mahan a short time later. 

 Mahan also was sentenced to 12 months of post-release supervision by Judge Amy Hanley.

Sentencing for a related misdemeanor theft conviction will be decided at a later date.

“My priority remains to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community,” District Attorney Valdez said. “This kind of behavior will not be tolerated.”

OSAGE COUNTY –Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug allegations.

Just before 10 pm June 3, a Sheriff’s K-9 unit conducted a traffic stop at 213th and South Michigan Road in rural Osage County for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells. During the stop, illegal narcotics were located.

Two subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility. Delwin D. Watkins, 58, of Pomona, is being held on requested charges of&nbsp;Distribution of methamphetamine, Possession of marijuana, Possession of drug paraphernalia, No drug tax stamp, Driving while license suspended, No proof of insurance and Illegal registration

Marvin J. McWhorter Jr., 64, of Quenemo is accused of Possession of methamphetamine.

RENO COUNTY —The bales are still burning after a large fire in Reno County.

Just before 9:30pm Friday,&nbsp;Reno County Fire District 7 was notified of a large hay fire at the Turon Feedlot, according to Reno County Emergency Management. Crews found 2100 hay bales on fire.

Mutual aid was requested from Fire Districts 4 and 6.

Crews worked with feedlot staff to move unburned hay. The fire was contained to the hay pile. Feedlot staff continues monitoring the fire. The hay pile will be burning for several days.&nbsp; &nbsp;Authorities have not released details on what caused the fire.

2,100 hay bales lost in Kansas feedlot fire will burn for days

DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man is going back to prison for a gun crime in Kansas.

&nbsp;Last week, Howard C. Levite Jr., 32, of Leavenworth, was sentenced to 40 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections in the non-fatal shooting of a man at a Lawrence fast food restaurant in 2019, according to&nbsp;Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez.

“Gun violence claims more than 120 lives in our country each day,” District Attorney Valdez said. “My office is committed to helping to ensure that no one in our community lives in fear of gun violence.”

Judge Sally Pokorny also sentenced Levite, who pleaded no contest to attempted aggravated battery in May 2024, to 24 months post-release supervision. Levite is to serve the sentence consecutively to an unrelated federal conviction.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on October 26, 2019, when Levite shot a then 50-year-old man following an altercation in the parking lot of McDonald’s, 1309 W. 6th St., Lawrence.

Levite has previous convictions for robbery and drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kansas felon shot man in parking lot of fast-food restaurant

JOHNSON COUNTY —Authorities are working to determine the cause of a Kansas house fire.

Just after 10:30a.m. Friday crews from Olathe and Overland Park responded to a fire at a home&nbsp;near 167th Street and Brougham Drive, according to a social media report from Olathe Fire.

A 911 caller reported “fire on the back of house.” The damage to the home is extensive. There were no injuries reported. The&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/hashtag/RedCross?src=hashtag_click">RedCross</a>&nbsp;is assisting family.

Extensive damage after fire at Kansas home

MORGAN COUNTY —A Missouri woman died in an accident just after 6p.m. Friday in Morgan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Polaris RZR driven by Jacob W. Dye, 37, Albany, was northbound at the&nbsp;The Loop Lake Ozark Offroad Park.

The vehicle was climbing a hill, lost traction and rolled down the hill. The driver and passenger identified as Shawna R. Dye, 36, Albany, were ejected.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Kidwell Garber Funeral Home. Mid Missouri ambulance transported Jacob Dye to Lake Regional Hospital. They were not wearing helmets, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman dies after UTV rolls down a hill

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a Kansas teen, have made two arrests and continue to search for another suspect.

Just after noon May 26, police responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of N Dodge in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses. The victim in this case, an 18-year-old girl later arrived at an area hospital with second degree burns to the face and neck believed to be caused by a suspect throwing an acidic liquid on her during a physical fight. Police do not believe the attack was a random incident.

Immediately following the incident, investigators with the WPD Felony Assault unit along with patrol officers began looking for three suspects. On June 5, officers with the Patrol North Community Response Team located and arrested two 18-year-old suspects. According to Sedgwick County booking records, Ye'Kira Acoya Hollins and Tayronnia Jontashia West were jailed in connection with the crime. On Friday, West was charged with Aggravated Battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; Hollins, 18, met the requirement of bond and is scheduled for court on June 20.

Investigators are still attempting to locate a third suspect, a 16-year-old black female of Topeka.

Search continues for suspect in acid attack on Kan. teen

U.S. forces are expected in the coming days to resume delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza via the Defense Department's Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore pier, a senior military official said Friday.

Navy Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, said U.S. troops have successfully reattached the temporary causeway to the beach in Gaza with the assistance of Israel Defense Force engineers following a a weather-related break in the pier.&nbsp;

"To be sure, this method of delivering aid from the sea to the people of Gaza has already proved to be effective," Cooper said. "During its previous weeklong period of operation, the temporary pier delivered 1,000 metric tons of aid — more than 2 million pounds — to the people of Gaza."&nbsp;

The U.S. halted the flow of aid using the sea corridor last month after high sea caused damage to a portion of the temporary pier, forcing crews to remove the pier from its anchor point on the Gaza coastline. &nbsp;

The pier was relocated temporarily to the Port of Ashdod, Israel, where it underwent repairs. The pier was successfully reattached to the anchor point in Gaza earlier today. &nbsp;

"Weather has always been a factor in military operations, and, as we do around the world every day, we will adjust to the weather as required," Cooper said. "I personally, and I think we as a command, could not be prouder of the exceptional work by our soldiers and sailors who have done a simply superb job in just getting the pier back on mission in very short order."&nbsp;

Cooper also highlighted the "exceptional" partnership between U.S. &nbsp;Israeli forces, which provided the necessary support to ensure the safe emplacement of the pier to the Gaza beach. &nbsp;

"They remain completely supportive of our effort to increase the volume of aid into Gaza," Cooper said. "We also continue to enjoy the support of the international community."&nbsp;

The effort, led by the U.S. Agency for International Development, is being carried out as part of broader efforts by the United States and international partners to surge assistance to Palestinians.&nbsp;

Soldiers from the Army's 7th Transportation Brigade at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and sailors from Naval Beach Group 1 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California, were tapped to deploy the JLOTS capability after President Joe Biden called on the military to conduct an emergency operation during his State of the Union address.&nbsp;

Delivering the capability involved a complex choreography of logistics support and landing crafts that carry the equipment used to construct the approximately 1,800-foot causeway comprised of modular, floating sections linked together. &nbsp;

The units also constructed a roll-on, roll-off discharge facility that is 72 feet wide by 270 feet long. The discharge facility will remain far off Gaza's shore and enable cargo ships to offload aid shipments at sea before they’re transported to shore. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The U.S. is also working closely with international donors who first ship aid into Cyprus where it is screened and packaged before being loaded onto ships to be transported to the temporary pier.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Officials emphasized that no U.S. boots are on the ground in Gaza as part of the operation, and the safety of U.S. forces is the top priority. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition to operating the pier, the U.S. has stood up coordination cells to ensure operations are carried out as safely and efficiently as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those coordination efforts continued while the pier underwent repairs.&nbsp;

Before the pause in operations, the pier accounted for the second highest volume of aid entering Gaza from any crossing and about 30% of the total aid delivered during that period.

Cooper said the U.S. and international partners expect to increase the volume of humanitarian assistance provided through the sea corridor above previous levels once the pier operations resume. &nbsp;

"Thousands of tons of aid are in various stages in the pipeline for delivery," Cooper said. "And, clearly, our international partners have seen the previous, positive effect that the pier has [had] on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, and they remain committed to its continued success."

US military’s Gaza pier has been repaired, aid deliveries to resume soon

KANSAS CITY— Police investigating a deadly 4-vehicle crash have identified the victim as 54-year-old Troy Chatman, according to KCPD Sergeant Phil DiMartino.

Just after 7:30p.m. June 1, a Chevrolet Equinox was eastbound on Interstate 70 at a high rate of speed. As the Chevy approached Manchester, the vehicle struck a Toyota Camry, a Ford Expedition driven by Chatman and a Ford F150 that were all traveling eastbound, according to&nbsp;Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

The impact caused the Expedition to go into a broad slide and overturn. The Expedition rolled over the top of the Toyota and down an embankment, ejecting Chatman, who was the sole occupant out of the SUV onto the shoulder of the highway.

EMS transported the driver of the Chevy Equinox to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota and the driver and front seat passenger of the F150 were all uninjured in the collision. 

An investigation, to include suspected impairment, is ongoing. 

All lanes of eastbound I-70 were closed to traffic at Manchester for approximately three hours. This is fatality #45 compared to #32 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez.

On May 29, a judge sentenced 53-year-old Ronald Lee Kidwell to 18-years in prison for the death of 43-year-old MeShon Cooper in July 2018, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's Office.
