(AP) — MJ Melendez hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and had a career-high six RBIs to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 13-5. 

The rookie Melendez blasted it an estimated 406-feet to right field which bounced into the fountains to give the Royals a 5-0 lead. 

Melendez is putting together quite the campaign after being called up on May 3. He’s hit 13 home runs on the year and has back-to-back homer games four times this season. Among rookies, he’s hit the fifth most home runs this season and is just two behind teammate Bobby Witt Jr.

The Royals next take on the White Sox in a double-header Tuesday afternoon with first pitch at 3:10 central. Coverage begins at 2:30 on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph. The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after game one.

Melendez posts 6-RBI game as Royals smash Red Sox 13-5

The Kansas City Chiefs were back at training camp practice on a warm, muggy Sunday morning, and it was somewhat forgettable day for the offense.

Whether it was misconnections on deep passes early or three consecutive false starts during team drills, it wasn’t the best of days offensively.

Yet, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was not discouraged and believed his players learned a lesson from it.

"I think today was a good learning lesson," Bieniemy said. "It was an outstanding practice. The defense did a heck of a job. The beauty of it is, it's training camp. You live and learn each and every day and there's a lesson you can gain from this."

The offense did eventually wake up in the latter half of Sunday's workout, particularly Mecole Hardman, who caught a couple of contested deep balls in seven-on-seven.

Daurice Fountain was also productive, as he was back on the field after hurting his finger Saturday. He seemed to have caught everything thrown his way.

On the offensive line, the Chiefs worked Geron Christian in at right tackle with the first-team offense. Up until now, it had been Andrew Wyline manning that spot, but Wylie worked with the second-team.

Bieniemy didn't elaborate too much on this change. Other than to say - execution is the main thing he and the coaching staff are looking for at every position.

"The thing I'm looking for is, when we're out there, are we all being accountable to one another," Bieniemy said. "Are we executing with great attention to details. Are we having a sense of urgency and sense of purpose in what we're doing?"

One player that continues to have a sense of purpose is rookie running back Isiah Pacheco, who's really making a strong case to be the No. 2 back behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Reid remarked Saturday that Pacheco "runs hard every time he touches the ball." Bieniemy is also impressed with the seventh-round pick out of Rutgers, but was complimentary of all the running backs.

"He's a tough kid," he said of Pacheco. "Obviously, we have a lot of good players in that room. In time, everything will tell for itself. Right now, (Pacheco) is doing some good things. He's working his tail off, but you have a lot of other guys in there competing their tails off as well."

Some good news - no new injuries Sunday. Still no Jody Forston as he deals with a strained quad. He's been out for just over a week. Receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) and Taylor Stallworth (knee bruise) also didn’t practice.

Lucas Niang (knee) and Rashad Fenton (shoulder) remain on the injured list.

He still hasn't gotten reps with the first-team defense, but the 13-year veteran is looking strong, as Dunlap at times dominated the second-team offensive line during team drills Sunday.

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who has been working with the first-team D-line on the interior, says he used to train with Dunlap a few years ago. He's not surprised Dunlap has caught on so quickly.

"Since (Dunlap) has been here, he's been doing his part," Nnadi said. "He'll try and throw any bit of nuggets to anybody on the D-line. So, yes. He does bring a lot of good leadership to the D-line."

It’s officially game week, as the Chiefs can now look toward that first preseason game at Chicago this Saturday.

It is just preseason, but it’s a chance for the Chiefs to go against somebody in a different jersey.

Second-year linebacker and starter Nick Bolton probably won’t play a ton of snaps, but he just wants the defense to give it their all once the game starts.

"Whatever we have in, just executing it to the highest level we can," Bolton said. "Going down there and stopping the run early. Also just playing the pass game along with that. I just want to go in, execute at the highest level and build from the ground up."

Nnadi added the biggest key to preseason, especially for younger players, is to not overthink too much and stick to what you've learned.

"It's preseason," he said. "Just play. Do what you've been coached to do. If there's anything the coaches want you to improve on, that's a good chance to do it after (the game). Go watch the film, corrections and that's how it goes. Just trust yourself. Don't overthink it and just play."

Saturday’s game at Chicago kicks off at noon central. It’ll be carried live on Q Country 92.7 FM and KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

The Chiefs have practice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week.

A rocky day for the offense at Chiefs training camp Sunday

Pratto's 9th-inning homer gives Royals 5-4 win over Red Sox

St. Joseph felt the heat wave Saturday, especially those at Chiefs training camp.

Temperatures were already in the 80s by Saturday morning with plenty of humidity to go around. Some high level clouds and breeze provided a little relief, as the Chiefs practiced for over two hours at Missouri Western.

Head coach Andy Reid thought the team handled the elements well.

"Little more heat again today," Reid said. "The guys battled through it. We had a day off (Friday). So, they freshened up and came out here and worked their tail off. Great competition between both sides and I appreciated that as the head coach."

After a shorter 10-10-10 practice Thursday, and a day off Friday, the Chiefs had a lengthier session Saturday with lots of install, one-on-one drills, special teams, two-minute drills, 9-on-7, 7-on-7 and full team 11-on-11.

Injury wise, tight end Jody Forston (quad) and receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) did not practice Saturday. Forston has been out for a week, but Reid says he's "progressing."

Receiver Daurice Fountain left practice with a finger injury and will be X-rayed. Defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth did not practice Saturday due to a knee bruise.&nbsp;

Right tackle Lucas Niang (knee) and corner Rashad Fenton (shoulder) are still on the injured list.

Saturday was a good day for rookie corners Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams, who each had a handful of pass deflections against top receiver Saturday. Reid, when asked about McDuffie described him as "smart, strong and usually in position to make things happen."

Meanwhile, safety and fourth-year pro Juan Thornhill has emerged as a leader in the defensive backfield this camp, especially with the absence of Tyrann Mathieu.

Thornhill says not a lot has changed in the way he goes about his business on the field.

"Just being more vocal to the guys," Thornhill said. "Guys come to me to ask questions and they look to me to give them the right answer if they don't have the right answer. So, that's the only thing I've been doing (different) is trying to be a leader, lead by example and if the (young players) have any questions, they can just ask me."

After tearing his ACL in his left knee toward the end of 2019 and not being 100% in 2020, Thornhill says he's feeling his best now, and had said during OTAs that he felt like he could have an all-pro type of season.

"The knee is healthier," he said. "I have more mental clarity. I feel better all around. I just feel like I'm back to myself and I'm capable of having an all-pro season."

It's become apparent by now that the top running back job is once again Clyde Edwards-Helaire's to lose. However, the competition for the No. 2 back has been more interesting.

Rookie Isiah Pacheco has won a lot of praise, but Jerick McKinnon is making a case, as is Ronald Jones. Heck, even Derrick Gore got some reps with the first-team offense Saturday.

"I like the depth at running back," Reid said. "I like it. I'm curious to see those guys compete in games. We know a couple of them, because they've been here, and we're learning about the other two (Jones, Pacheco). It looks like a good group."

In the post Tyreek Hill era, Chiefs fans have been getting acquainted with new faces at wide receiver, like Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and rookie Skyy Moore.

One face that is familiar from last year is fourth-year pro Mecole Hardman, who was third on the team last season with 693 receiving yards and 59 catches.

Hardman says Patrick Mahomes has done a nice job leading and bringing these receivers together.

"Pat's a leader," he said. "He's going to lead us and we're going to look to him to lead. I think he does a good job of that - putting a lot of pressure on his shoulders. So, he's getting us together and doing what he needs to do to be a leader. Can't ask anything more out of him."

&nbsp;The Chiefs practice again Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before the next day off Wednesday.

Chiefs complete long, hot practice Saturday after day off Friday

Bogaerts has 4 hits, Red Sox beat Royals 7-4

Mitch Holthus is entering his 29th year as radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He's experienced the highs and lows of the modern era in Chiefs football. He went to training camp for 16 years in River Falls, Wisconsin, the one training camp in Kansas City in 2020 and now for the 12th time, he's watching the team come into form on the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

"Every year seems like the first year," Holthus told KFEQ Radio. "I know that sounds trite or corny, but truthfully, it's that feeling. I feel like I'm a rookie every year. That's what I tell the team. Your stomach churns, you get nervous and every day is just awesome."

Holthus has had a front row seat to what's surely been the best 10-year stretch in franchise history. Six straight AFC West championships. Nine straight winning seasons. Eight playoff berths since 2013. Four straight AFC Championship games at Arrowhead Stadium. The first Super Bowl win 50 years. The list goes on.

Yet, heading into 2022, despite all of this recent success and a star-studded roster, Holthus believes this team has something to prove, even though they've proven themselves time and again.

"This is a team that has very unique focus," he said. "They're hyperfocused, starting with their biggest stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Truthfully, there's a chip on these guys' shoulder."

The 2021 season left a sour taste. Whether it was the 3-4 start, or blowing a 21-3 lead to Cincinnati in the AFC title game. The Tyreek Hill trade in March gave doubters some fuel as well. Holthus believes all of those factors combined gave this team a unique swagger in the offseason.

"They've come in here a little ticked off," he noted.&nbsp; "I saw it in minicamp, I saw it in OTAs and I've seen it so far here in St. Joe."

Hill is a franchise changing player, but the Chiefs picked up veteran receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency. Plus, rookie receiver Skyy Moore has been a breakout star in camp. As has rookie running back Isiah Pacheco.

You also look at running back Ronald Jones and safety Justin Reid - two veterans picked up in free agency that could have a big impact on how the Chiefs do.

"To add that with what's already here and the new rookies...somebody pick them fourth in the division, but do so at your own peril."

This marks the last year that Chiefs training camp is required to be in St. Joseph, according to the current agreement. There are two more optional years after this, but Missouri Western and Chiefs leadership will evaluate the contract once camp is over.

With only about six or seven teams left in the NFL that stil travel outside of their home city for camp, Holthus is hopeful the Chiefs will keep coming back to Missouri Western.

"They've been phenomenal," Holthus said of the University. "Mosaic (Life Care) has been phenomenal. The merchants, people like HyVee, have been phenomenal. It's a great camp. People say you're going away for camp. We're only going 50 minutes away. It's not like we're in Wisconsin."

"We've had 11 camps in St. Joe and have been to the playoffs in eight of those 11 years. I don't think it's a coincidence that the most successful nine years in Chiefs history, a lot of it is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but this is where those seasons begin - right here on this campus and right here in this city."

As for a season prediction? Holthus doesn't put out a specific number of wins and losses. Though, he's confident a Super Bowl contender is being molded yet again. Even if others on the outside don't feel that way anymore.

"This is a refocused, recharged, rebooted team," he said. "There's a lot of talent and the coaching is superb. It's crazy that a team that is this successful is actually, in a way, going to sneak up on people. But, that's the way I feel."

He went to training camp for 16 years in River Falls, Wisconsin, the one training camp in Kansas City in 2020 and now for the 12th time, he's watching the team come into form on the Mosaic Training Fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph."Every year seems like the first year," Holthus told KFEQ Radio. "I know that sounds trite or corny, but truthfully, it's that feeling. I feel like I'm a rookie every year. That's what I tell the team. Your stomach churns, you get nervous and every day is just awesome."Holthus has had a front row seat to what's surely been the best 10-year stretch in franchise history. Six straight AFC West championships. Nine straight winning seasons. Eight playoff berths since 2013. Four straight AFC Championship games at Arrowhead Stadium. The first Super Bowl win 50 years. The list goes on.Yet, heading into 2022, despite all of this recent success and a star-studded roster, Holthus believes this team has something to prove, even though they've proven themselves time and again."This is a team that has very unique focus," he said. "They're hyperfocused, starting with their biggest stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Truthfully, there's a chip on these guys' shoulder."The 2021 season left a sour taste. Whether it was the 3-4 start, or blowing a 21-3 lead to Cincinnati in the AFC title game. The Tyreek Hill trade in March gave doubters some fuel as well. Holthus believes all of those factors combined gave this team a unique swagger in the offseason."They've come in here a little ticked off," he noted.&nbsp; "I saw it in minicamp, I saw it in OTAs and I've seen it so far here in St. Joe."Hill is a franchise changing player, but the Chiefs picked up veteran receivers Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency. Plus, rookie receiver Skyy Moore has been a breakout star in camp. Perez's 3-run homer in 7th lifts Royals over Red Sox 7-3

Carlos Dunlap is a veteran defensive end, entering his 13th season in the NFL and his first in Kansas City after the team signed him last week.

He reported to training camp for the first time Thursday, though he didn’t do much on the field as he’s being brought up to speed.

Dunlap, who owns 96 career sacks, says there were several teams interested in him, but Kansas City’s recent success was an appeal.

"I've done a lot of football," said Dunlap, who spent 10 seasons in Cincinnati and nearly two seasons in Seattle. "One of the things I haven't done is, I haven't gotten over 100 sacks (in my career), I haven't won a playoff game and I haven't won a Super Bowl. Those are things I would like to do at this point in my career."

"I'm in hot pursuit and I feel like this team gives me a great opportunity, the best opportunity to do it."

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says Dunlap's physical length, along with his experience, adds a nice wrinkle.

"It's another veteran who's been through the thick of things," Spagnuolo said. "Short of that, I've obviously seen him play. It's really going to be us figuring out what he can do and where to put him."

Dunlap talked about Kansas City being the right fit for him, as he signed a one-year, eight-million dollar deal. Another factor in the decision, Dunlap says, was the strength of the Chiefs' 2022 schedule.

Kansas City will play 12 games this year against an opponent that made the playoffs in 2021. Another intriguing part of the schedule, at least for Dunlap, is the two games against Denver.

The Broncos didn't make the playoffs last year, but Dunlap's former teammate, a guy named Russel Wilson, has taken the reigns at quarterback in Denver.

Dunlap says there's no animosity between he and Russell.

"I have a job to do just the same as (Wilson) does," Dunlap remarked. "There's a lot of things on that schedule that I liked that played into my decision as well."

Receivers Daurice Fountain and Gary Jennings did not practice Thursday. Fountain has a groin injury and Jennings is concussed. Jody Forston sat out again due to a strained quad.

Offensive lineman Prince Tega Wanogho was back on the field for the first time at camp Thursday after being out with a leg injury. Rashad Fenton and Lucas Niang are still on the injured list.

Rookie receiver Skyy Moore has gotten comfortable with the Chiefs offense right from the get-go at training camp.

He’s consistently worked with the first-team offense and has made eye popping plays several times, including a couple of nice catches Thursday.

 Moore says he’s intrigued by the scheme Eric Bieniemy runs.

"It's starting to click," Moore said. "I feel like everything in this offense is counters. We run this play, and this play is a counter to that play. So, once you get the basics of everything, it starts to click a whole lot faster."

Moore was a second-round draft pick out of Western Michigan. He’s one of several new receivers Patrick Mahomes will look to throw to this season.

Moore is also a potential candidate to return punts this season, along with fellow receiver Mecole Hardman. Moore also worked out with Mahomes in the offseason Texas.

"That was another opportunity for me to see what he likes and see how he operates," Moore said of Mahomes. "It was very beneficial to go into his work space. I went to Dallas. That's where he's from."

Offensive line - not so young anymore

The Chiefs' clear priority before the 2021 season was to reload at offensive line after the Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay.

Reload they did, acquiring now three-time Pro Bowler Orlando Brown at left tackle, and drafting Creed Humphrey (center) and Trey Smith (right guard) last year. They also added guard Joe Thuney in free agency.

Right tackle Andrew Wylie is entering his fifth season with the Chiefs, and has by now solidly earned his starting role. With a group that's no longer not so new, Wylie has high expectations for the offensive line this season.

"We have a lot of the same guys in the room," he said. "We're expected to go out there and kick a lot of ass this year. We have a great O-line."

The NFL preseason officially gets underway Thursday night with the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio between Las Vegas and Jacksonville at 7 p.m. central.

The Chiefs will play at Chicago on August 13 to kick off their preseason. Spagnuolo says there are a few benefits to playing an actual game versus the reps in training camp.

"There's a little bit more pressure," Spags said. "There's people watching. They know every other team has an eyeball on them. Any time we can put pressure on these guys, in my opinion, is a good thing."

Kansas City will also host Washington on August 20 and Green Bay on August 25 this preseason.

The Chiefs will rest Friday and will practice every day from Saturday through Tuesday of next week.

Carlos Dunlap arrives at camp, Chiefs complete a fairly quick practice before off day Friday

The White Sox won for the third time in four games while remaining two games behind the Twins and one behind the Guardians in the AL Central. The Royals fell for the seventh time in nine games.

Lance Lynn, Jose Abreu lift White Sox over Royals 4-1

Missouri Western Athletics and the Griffon Hall of Fame announced one of their largest ever Hall of Fame induction classes Wednesday. This 2022 Hall of Fame class includes six former standout student-athletes, two conference championship teams and a meritorious service inductee. Rogers Pharmacy Hall of Fame Weekend begins Friday, October 28 at 5 p.m. with a private reception for the inductees followed by dinner and induction at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct.&nbsp;29, all inductees will be recognized during halftime of the Griffon Football game, where they are hosting Missouri Southern at Spratt Stadium. The halftime ceremony will feature the individual inductees receiving their rings. 1979 Griffon Volleyball The 1979 Lady Griffons CSIC championship team will be the first ever volleyball team inducted into the MWSU Hall of Fame and joins the six previous volleyball individual inductees. This team rattled off consecutive winning streaks of 17 and 18 matches separated by only a single loss to Kearney State. That lone conference loss was the only blemish on their 13-1 CSIC record. The 13-1 conference record contributed to their 48-11-2 overall record on the season. In only the fifth&nbsp;year of the program headed up by legendary Hall of Fame coach, Rhesa Sumrell, the Lady Griffons competed in the Kansas State Invitational winning or tying matches against larger schools Oklahoma State, Drake and Kansas State. In 1979, Missouri Western also hosted and won the first ever Missouri Western Invitational going 5-0. The team was well represented in post season awards including All-CSIC first team selections Kay Keller and Jean Haffner, All-CSIC second team selections Chris Sumrell and Sara Nolte and All-CSIC&nbsp;Honorable Mention selection Cathy Cox. After winning the first ever Missouri Western CSIC volleyball championship, these Lady Griffons went on to be runner-up in the Region VI Tournament, posting a 6-2 record and qualified for their second-consecutive AIAW National tournament —&nbsp;played in Orlando, Florida — in the program's five-year existence.

2012 Griffon Football The 2012 Griffon Football team joins the 1975 and 1977 teams as the third football team to enter the MWSU Hall of Fame, thus honoring the greatest season in program history. Jerry Partridge, the winningest football coach in MWSU history and the third winningest coach in MIAA history guided the 2012 team to many program firsts. Some of the many&nbsp;2012 Griffons' team records include the following: most wins in a season with 12;&nbsp;first outright MIAA championship; first home NCAA playoff game; first NCAA playoff win; first NCAA road playoff win; and six wins over top-25 teams.&nbsp;For this,&nbsp;Partridge was named the MIAA Coach of the Year.

This historic season saw many players establish records and record their own firsts. Quarterback Travis Partridge's 18 rushing touchdown set and remains a program record. Teammate Michael Hill also set the record for the most overall touchdowns at 19.&nbsp;To add the cherry on top of Hill's climatic season, his 114 points scored broke 2011 kicker Greg Zuerlein's record of 107. Not to be outdone by the skills players, kicker Taylor Anderson went 74-for-74 and also scored&nbsp;110 points. Hill was a finalist and runner up for the Harlon&nbsp;Hill award, and David Bass was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw award&nbsp;–&nbsp;both program firsts. Hill was named the MIAA&nbsp;Player of the Year, and defensive back Michael Jordan was named Freshman of the Year, portending his distinguished career to come. The Griffons finished the year ranked No. 5&nbsp;in the final AFCA poll, their highest finish ever.

Damon Bailey - Forward, Griffon Men's Basketball - 2001-2003 Missouri Western Men's Basketball saw much success with Damon Bailey on the court, going 46-15 overall and 22-8 in conference games during his two seasons as a Griffon. That includes a regular season MIAA co-championship in 2002 and an MIAA&nbsp;Tournament Championship in 2003&nbsp;with two NCAA South Central Regional appearances during his time. That 2003 MIAA Tournament was also the first time the tourney was held in Kansas City, Missouri. Bailey led the charge in that 2003 run, receiving&nbsp;MIAA Postseason Tournament MVP honors.&nbsp;Bailey&nbsp;was an effective scorer for the Griffons as his 590 points in the 2002-03 season ranks second all-time and his 496 points in the 2001-2002 season puts him at fourth all-time in the single season records. Over his two seasons as a Griffon, Bailey&nbsp;logged 1,086 points, billing him 12th&nbsp;all-time in career scoring. Bailey&nbsp;earned Second&nbsp;Team All-MIAA following the 2001-02 season and was a First&nbsp;Team All-MIAA pick following his 2002-03 season. Career Records

Eldra Paixao&nbsp;- Guard, Griffon Women's Basketball - 2003-05 Heading into this year's selection process, it seemed like Griffon Women's Basketball's second all-time leader in steals was a lock for the Missouri Western Hall of Fame.&nbsp;Eldra Paixao began her basketball career as a youth player in Brazil. She then took her skills to South Plains College in Texas helping her team to a 30-2 record and the WJCAC championship. With that pedigree, Hall of Fame Coach Dave Slifer was happy to see Paixao&nbsp;join the Griffons. No sooner did Paixao get on campus was her presence on the court felt. In her first season as a Griffon in 2003-04, she established herself as a premier player being named not only First Team All-MIAA but also as the MIAA Defensive Player of Year award. She followed up that performance with another First Team All-MIAA performance in 2004-05. Her quick hands and basketball acumen produced team-leading steals totals in both seasons she played, posting 107 and 81 for a career total of 188 steals. Those totals are ranked No. 1&nbsp;and&nbsp;No. 2&nbsp;all-time for a season. Paixao&nbsp;capped off her career earning the Missouri Western 2004-05 Female Student Athlete of the Year award. Drew Newhart&nbsp;- Quarterback, Griffon Football - 2007-2010 There are prolific passers, and then there's Drew Newhart. The Griffon gunslinger&nbsp;used his arm to lead each of the four teams he quarterbacked to postseason play. Newhart threw 1,348 passes, completing 817 for 10,691 yards, all tops among any MWSU quarterback's all-time career. Newhart only trails fellow Hall of Famer Kasey Waterman's 98 touchdown passes&nbsp;with 95 touchdowns of his own, ranking second-all time. Newhart threw for 412 yards in 2010 against Truman State,&nbsp;establishing the school record for passing yards in a game. He&nbsp;was a recipient of the prestigious Chris Faros Scholarship award as well as named the Missouri Western 2010-11 Male Student Athlete of the year. Grant Fink - Third Baseman,&nbsp;Griffon Baseball - 2012-13 Grant Fink starred for&nbsp;Buzz Verduzco's Griffons for two years. Grant's biggest impact was at the plate where he hit at a .355 clip through his career, ranking him tied for ninth&nbsp;all-time. His offensive contributions helped the Griffons to a 40-12 overall record and MIAA-best 28-5 in 2013, winning the conference for the first time in Verduzco's career. Fink and the Griffons made their way to the NCAA Central Regional for the second time in Verduzco's career. Grant hit 22 home runs during his time as a Griffon, tying him for fourth on the all-time list. For nine years,&nbsp;Fink's season record 14 home runs in 2013 was the gold standard for Griffon hitters.&nbsp;Almost even more impressive, his .397 batting average and 51 RBI in 2013 are what likely cemented his Hall of Fame selection. Fink, playing third&nbsp;base for the Griffons, was named Second Team All-MIAA in 2012 and First&nbsp;Team All-MIAA in that memorable 2013 season. Everet Hoffman – Griffon Men's Tennis - 1972-74 Everet Hoffman, a St Joseph native, first became interested in tennis while in high school. The 1971 Benton graduate showed real promise in high school winning the MEC singles tennis championship when he was a junior. Everet was also the district runner up in both his junior and senior years. After attending Northwest Missouri State his freshman year, he came back to St. Joseph and picked up tennis once again playing for Missouri Western. During his playing career, Hoffman was the No. 1 singles player for the Griffons. He was also the top men's tennis player on the NAIA All-District 16 Tennis six-man tennis team as a junior and overall named to the District 16 First Team three times. Hoffman was the first Missouri Western Tennis athlete to qualify for the National Tournament and had a career singles record of 43-10. Everet also served as the St Joseph Central High School tennis coach from 2014-2018. Chris Ball - Defensive Back,&nbsp;Griffon Football - 1983-85 Chris Ball was one of the defensive stars of early Griffon Football teams playing three seasons from 1983-1985 and recognized as such when he was named to the 1980's All-Decade&nbsp;Team. A defensive back, Chris recorded a team-leading&nbsp;five&nbsp;interceptions in 1984. His 12 career picks are tied for sixth&nbsp;all-time at Missouri Western in that category. Following the 1984 season, he was named Second&nbsp;Team All-CSIC and for his efforts during the 1985 season, Chris was named to the First Team All-CSIC as well as being named an Honorable Mention All-American. Chris has remained close to the game of football honing his coaching skills at the likes of Alabama, Pittsburg, Arizona State and Memphis before being named the head&nbsp;coach at Division I Northern Arizona University in 2018.

Lyle Smith -&nbsp;Meritorious Service Lyle Smith started attending Missouri Western athletic events in 1993. He was especially a fan of Hall of Fame coach Jeff Mittie's Women's Basketball teams of that era. A fan of all sports though, Smith&nbsp;liked what he saw in the still young Griffon Athletics&nbsp;programs, prompting him to join the Missouri Western Gold Coat club in 1995. He later became a hard-working Gold Coat Board member in 1999. Smith&nbsp;is a top supporter of Griffon athletics as a donor, fundraiser and fan in the stands both home and away. Arguably, no Griffon fan has traveled more miles or seen more games than Lyle Smith. Remarkably, Smith's&nbsp;allegiance is not a result of being a former athlete or alumnus. Smith gives from the heart as he always has. He has supported Doniphan County American Legion youth baseball as a coach for decades only recently retiring.

Missouri Western Athletics and the Griffon Hall of Fame announced one of their largest ever Hall of Fame induction classes Wednesday. This 2022 Hall of Fame class includes six former standout student-athletes, two conference championship teams and a meritorious service inductee. Rogers Pharmacy Hall of Fame Weekend begins Friday, October 28 at 5 p.m. with a private reception for the inductees followed by dinner and induction at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct.&nbsp;29, all inductees will be recognized during halftime of the Griffon Football game, where they are hosting Missouri Southern at Spratt Stadium. The halftime ceremony will feature the individual inductees receiving their rings. 1979 Griffon Volleyball The 1979 Lady Griffons CSIC championship team will be the first ever volleyball team inducted into the MWSU Hall of Fame and joins the six previous volleyball individual inductees. This team rattled off consecutive winning streaks of 17 and 18 matches separated by only a single loss to Kearney State. That lone conference loss was the only blemish on their 13-1 CSIC record. The 13-1 conference record contributed to their 48-11-2 overall record on the season. In only the fifth&nbsp;year of the program headed up by legendary Hall of Fame coach, Rhesa Sumrell, the Lady Griffons competed in the Kansas State Invitational winning or tying matches against larger schools Oklahoma State, Drake and Kansas State. In 1979, Missouri Western also hosted and won the first ever Missouri Western Invitational going 5-0. The team was well represented in post season awards including All-CSIC first team selections Kay Keller and Jean Haffner, All-CSIC second team selections Chris Sumrell and Sara Nolte and All-CSIC&nbsp;Honorable Mention selection Cathy Cox. After winning the first ever Missouri Western CSIC volleyball championship, these Lady Griffons went on to be runner-up in the Region VI Tournament, posting a 6-2 record and qualified for their second-consecutive AIAW National tournament —&nbsp;played in Orlando, Florida — in the program's five-year existence.<ul>

 </ul> 2012 Griffon Football The 2012 Griffon Football team joins the 1975 and 1977 teams as the third football team to enter the MWSU Hall of Fame, thus honoring the greatest season in program history. Jerry Partridge, the winningest football coach in MWSU history and the third winningest coach in MIAA history guided the 2012 team to many program firsts. Some of the many&nbsp;2012 Griffons' team records include the following: most wins in a season with 12;&nbsp;first outright MIAA championship; first home NCAA playoff game; first NCAA playoff win; first NCAA road playoff win; and six wins over top-25 teams.&nbsp;For this,&nbsp;Partridge was named the MIAA Coach of the Year.This historic season saw many players establish records and record their own firsts. Quarterback Travis Partridge's 18 rushing touchdown set and remains a program record. Teammate Michael Hill also set the record for the most overall touchdowns at 19.&nbsp;To add the cherry on top of Hill's climatic season, his 114 points scored broke 2011 kicker Greg Zuerlein's record of 107. Not to be outdone by the skills players, kicker Taylor Anderson went 74-for-74 and also scored&nbsp;110 points. Hill was a finalist and runner up for the Harlon&nbsp;Hill award, and David Bass was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw award&nbsp;–&nbsp;both program firsts. Hill was named the MIAA&nbsp;Player of the Year, and defensive back Michael Jordan was named Freshman of the Year, portending his distinguished career to come. The Griffons finished the year ranked No. 5&nbsp;in the final AFCA poll, their highest finish ever.<ul>

 </ul> Damon Bailey - Forward, Griffon Men's Basketball - 2001-2003 Missouri Western Men's Basketball saw much success with Damon Bailey on the court, going 46-15 overall and 22-8 in conference games during his two seasons as a Griffon. That includes a regular season MIAA co-championship in 2002 and an MIAA&nbsp;Tournament Championship in 2003&nbsp;with two NCAA South Central Regional appearances during his time. That 2003 MIAA Tournament was also the first time the tourney was held in Kansas City, Missouri. Bailey led the charge in that 2003 run, receiving&nbsp;MIAA Postseason Tournament MVP honors.&nbsp;Bailey&nbsp;was an effective scorer for the Griffons as his 590 points in the 2002-03 season ranks second all-time and his 496 points in the 2001-2002 season puts him at fourth all-time in the single season records. Over his two seasons as a Griffon, Bailey&nbsp;logged 1,086 points, billing him 12th&nbsp;all-time in career scoring.  </ul> Eldra Paixao&nbsp;- Guard, Griffon Women's Basketball - 2003-05 Heading into this year's selection process, it seemed like Griffon Women's Basketball's second all-time leader in steals was a lock for the Missouri Western Hall of Fame.&nbsp;Eldra Paixao began her basketball career as a youth player in Brazil. She then took her skills to South Plains College in Texas helping her team to a 30-2 record and the WJCAC championship. With that pedigree, Hall of Fame Coach Dave Slifer was happy to see Paixao&nbsp;join the Griffons. No sooner did Paixao get on campus was her presence on the court felt. In her first season as a Griffon in 2003-04, she established herself as a premier player being named not only First Team All-MIAA but also as the MIAA Defensive Player of Year award. She followed up that performance with another First Team All-MIAA performance in 2004-05. Her quick hands and basketball acumen produced team-leading steals totals in both seasons she played, posting 107 and 81 for a career total of 188 steals. Those totals are ranked No. 1&nbsp;and&nbsp;No. 2&nbsp;all-time for a season. Paixao&nbsp;capped off her career earning the Missouri Western 2004-05 Female Student Athlete of the Year award. Missouri Western athletics announces 2022 Hall of Fame Class

Eagle Radio in St. Joseph will carry live high school football in the fall of 2022.

Weeks 1-6 of the regular season will be streamed live on StJosephPost.com, as the Kansas City Royals finish out their season on KFEQ Radio.

St. Joseph Post, KFEQ Radio to broadcast high school football in fall 2022

Due to persistent showers and storms Wednesday morning, the Chiefs were forced to practice inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex, meaning practice was closed to the public.

The Chiefs practiced for over two hours in full pads, and head coach Andy Reid thought it to be a productive day.

"I thought the guys handled it well," Reid said of the indoor workout. "It was a red zone day, got a lot of work done there. A lot of good competition between ones versus ones and twos versus twos."

Receiver Skyy Moore was back on the field practicing after hurting his hip Tuesday. Tight end Jody Forston was not present, nor were Lucas Niang, Rashad Fenton and Prince Tega Wanogho, who remain on the injured list.

One player that was present and accounted for was left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. Wednesday marked just his second training camp practice after he missed OTAs, mandatory minicamp and the first five practices in St. Joseph due to ongoing contract negotiations with the Chiefs.

"I know he's been working hard down in Miami," Reid said of Brown Jr. "It looks like he's in good shape. We're ramping him up. So, we're trying to be smart with that as best we can."

With the departure of guys like Anthony Hitchens and Tyrann Mathieu in the offseason, Gay has taken on more of a leadership role as he enters his third season in Kansas City.

He’s quietly had a great training camp. On Wednesday, during red zone drills, he intercepted Patrick Mahomes in the end zone. That happened in camp late last week as well

Gay says his goals for this season go far beyond what happens in camp.

"It gives me a lot of confidence," Gay said, when asked about intercepting Mahomes. "I got goals to lead linebackers in the NFL in interceptions this year. When Pat throws me some, I know other quarterbacks will too, because they're not as good as him."

Gay had two interceptions last season to go with four pass deflections. He along with Nick Bolton and Elijah Lee have been the lead linebackers at camp thus far.

Pacheco, the seventh round pick out Rutgers, has proven to be one of the most exciting rookies this camp.

At 5-10 and 216 pounds, Pacheco has been rotating with the first-team offense, and he’s going to start the preseason as the lead kickoff returner, as specialist <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/193ced5d-c697-41d4-8d3b-ebd7fb3982d9">coach Dave Toub confirmed Tuesday</a>.

Coach Reid has taken notice, and says Pacheco has a special attribute.

"He's got a little juice to him," Reid said. "He's got good speed, toughness, all of that. Looking forward to getting him in a game and seeing how he does there. He's working hard, picking everything up and doing a nice job there."

Willie Gay used the same adjective when asked about the running backs and Pacheco in particular.

"He's just got so much juice when he runs, man. I feel like he's been such a great addition to the room."

Pacheco, along with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Ronald Jones and Jerick McKinnon have gotten most of the snaps at running back with the first-team offense.

Justin Watson and Patrick Mahomes connecting

Watson is one of many new wide receivers on the team this year, and he's been getting his reps with the first-teamers. He was also named by Coach Toub as one of the players making an impact on special teams.

Watson worked out with Mahomes in the offseason in Texas, two weeks before OTAs and then one week after, along with the other receivers on the team.

Needless to say, after just being signed by the Chiefs in February, Watson was surprised to receive a text from Mahomes himself.

"To reach out to me and invite me in the offseason before we ever met, to come down there and work, it meant a great deal," Watson said. "It definitely showed me that he wanted to get to know who I was and wanted to see what I had to do. Those first couple of weeks were fun."

Watson, a Penn graduate, was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round in 2018. He missed virtually the entire 2021 season due to knee surgery. Watson has come back strong, and Reid sees him making the most of his reps.

"It's just working in the offense," Reid said. "More and more and more. The reps that he gets are so important. He's working with the ones and the quarterback, he trusts him. Which is a plus."

The Chiefs practice again on Thursday morning and will rest Friday. The forecast looks dry and not as hot for Thursday, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s.

The White Sox made no major moves prior to the trade deadline and will bank on improvement from within as they try to overtake Minnesota and Cleveland to win their second straight AL Central championship. This one wasn’t exactly pristine, but the White Sox will take the lopsided win. 

Jiménez singled and scored in a three-run first inning and smacked a two-run double in the fourth to bump Chicago’s lead to 5-2. He added a long sacrifice fly in the sixth before Abreu chased Royals starter Brad Keller with a two-run homer off the left-field foul pole, making it 8-2.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, whose dulcet tones provided the soundtrack of summer while entertaining and informing Dodgers fans in Brooklyn and Los Angeles for 67 years, died Tuesday night. He was 94.

Scully died at his home in the Hidden Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to the team after being informed by family members. No cause of death was provided.

“He was the best there ever was,” pitcher Clayton Kershaw said after the Dodgers game in San Francisco. “Just such a special man. I’m grateful and thankful I got to know him as well as I did.”

He lived a fantastic life, a legacy that will live on forever.”Although he was paid by the Dodgers, Scully was unafraid to criticize a bad play or a manager’s decision, or praise an opponent while spinning stories against a backdrop of routine plays and noteworthy achievements. "His voice will always be heard and etched in all of our minds forever.”Vincent Edward Scully was born Nov. 29, 1927, in the Bronx. He was the son of a silk salesman who died of pneumonia when Scully was 7. His mother moved the family to Brooklyn, where the red-haired, blue-eyed Scully grew up playing stickball in the streets.As a child, Scully would grab a pillow, put it under the family’s four-legged radio and lay his head directly under the speaker to hear whatever college football game was on the air. With a snack of saltine crackers and a glass of milk nearby, the boy was transfixed by the crowd’s roar that raised goosebumps. He thought he’d like to call the action himself.Scully, who played outfield for two years on the Fordham University baseball team, began his career by working baseball, football and basketball games for the university’s radio station.At age 22, he was hired by a CBS radio affiliate in Washington, D.C.He soon joined Hall of Famer Red Barber and Connie Desmond in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ radio and television booths. In 1953, at age 25, Scully became the youngest person to broadcast a World Series game, a mark that still stands.He moved west with the Dodgers in 1958. Scully called three perfect games — Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, Sandy Koufax in 1965 and Dennis Martinez in 1991 — and 18 no-hitters.He also was on the air when Don Drysdale set his scoreless innings streak of 58 2/3 innings in 1968 and again when Hershiser broke the record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings 20 years later.When Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to break Babe Ruth’s record in 1974, it was against the Dodgers and, of course, Scully called it.“A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol,” Scully told listeners. “What a marvelous moment for baseball.”Scully credited the birth of the transistor radio as “the greatest single break” of his career. Fans had trouble recognizing the lesser players during the Dodgers’ first four years in the vast Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.“They were 70 or so odd rows away from the action,” he said in 2016. “They brought the radio to find out about all the other players and to see what they were trying to see down on the field.”That habit carried over when the team moved to Dodger Stadium in 1962. Fans held radios to their ears, and those not present listened from home or the car, allowing Scully to connect generations of families with his words.He often said it was best to describe a big play quickly and then be quiet so fans could listen to the pandemonium. After Koufax’s perfect game in 1965, Scully went silent for 38 seconds before talking again. He was similarly silent for a time after Kirk Gibson’s pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that year, and also had the stadium’s press box named for him in 2001. The street leading to Dodger Stadium’s main gate was named in his honor in 2016.That same year he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.“God has been so good to me to allow me to do what I’m doing,” Scully, a devout Catholic who attended mass on Sundays before heading to the ballpark, said before retiring. “A childhood dream that came to pass and then giving me 67 years to enjoy every minute of it. That’s a pretty large thanksgiving day for me.”In addition to being the voice of the Dodgers, Scully called play-by-play for NFL games and PGA Tour events as well as calling 25 World Series and 12 All-Star Games. He was NBC’s lead baseball announcer from 1983-89.While being one of the most widely heard broadcasters in the nation, Scully was an intensely private man. Once the baseball season ended, he would disappear. He rarely did personal appearances or sports talk shows. He preferred spending time with his family.In 1972, his first wife, Joan, died of an accidental overdose of medicine. He was left with three young children. Two years later, he met the woman who would become his second wife, Sandra, a secretary for the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams. She had two young children from a previous marriage, and they combined their families into what Scully once called “my own Brady Bunch.”He said he realized time was the most precious thing in the world and that he wanted to use his time to spend with his loved ones. In the early 1960s, Scully quit smoking with the help of his family. In the shirt pocket where he kept a pack of cigarettes, Scully stuck a family photo. Whenever he felt like he needed a smoke, he pulled out the photo to remind him why he quit. Eight months later, Scully never smoked again.After retiring in 2016, Scully made just a handful of appearances at Dodger Stadium and his sweet voice was heard narrating an occasional video played during games.
