Under the recommendation of MINK League Commissioner Ron Rodriguez, the league has elected to cancel the 2020 season. This decision was made due to the ongoing nationwide COVID-19 pandemic and the many uncertainties that still remain. The league prioritizes player, staff, and guest safety above all other factors.&nbsp;

MINK League Commissioner Ron Rodriguez said, “It is with great disappointment that the MINK League has determined that we cannot play this season. We join the many other leagues across the United States that have been affected by the COVID-19 virus and the fallout from it. But we must have the safety of our communities, host families, players, coaches, staff and officials as our main concern. Our communities are a vital part of the MINK League and we enjoy and appreciate their support. We made every effort to play this season and delayed the decision to make the most educated decision possible.”

“The summer tradition that is MINK League Baseball is something we hold very special. 2021 is going to be a very special season, a celebration. We want to thank all of the health care and frontline workers that have worked to keep us safe, and our thoughts are with those affected. We wish everyone to be safe and well,” noted MINK League President Ky Turner.

MINK League cancels its 2020 summer baseball season

May 27, 2020 – In an announcement made Wednesday by Principal Dr. Terri Godfrey and Athletic Director David Lau, the Central Indians have officially named Roger Smith as the next Central High School girls head basketball coach.

Roger Smith brings 17 years of coaching experience to Central High School.  Most recently, he served as the Associate Head Coach at Missouri Western State University from 2012-2019.  During that time, Smith helped turn around a struggling Griffon program that went 46-93 from 2008-2012.  Since that time the Griffons compiled a 116-86 record, had back to back 20 win seasons, and won the 2017 MIAA regular season championship.

Smith also has experience coaching in the Oklahoma City area on the high school level, winning a state championship while on the staff at Putnam City.  He served as the head coach at Cassady School and Little Axe High School in Oklahoma.

“We are excited to have Coach Smith join our team at Central.” said Dr. Terri Godfrey.  “He brings proven experience and leadership to a program that graduated only one senior”

“I am thrilled that Roger will be the next coach to lead our program,” said Athletic Director Dave Lau.  “We are very fortunate to hire someone with Roger’s experience, as well as, the character, integrity and leadership skills he possesses to lead the Central Lady Indians,” Lau added.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in History Education from the University of Central Oklahoma.  He and his wife, Cristina, have three children – Isabella, Griffin and Price.

Central hires former MWSU assistant Roger Smith as new girls' basketball coach

The athletic department at the University of Kansas has told donors it will make across-the-board pay cuts and furloughs as it faces a budget shortfall of up to 20%, even if full football and basketball seasons are played.

Jayhawks athletic director Jeff Long said in an email that employees making less than $50,000 will face a three-week furlough this summer; those making up to $149,000 can choose between a 10-day furlough or a pay cut of either 3.5% or 5% depending on their salary; those making up to $299,000 can choose a 10-day furlough or cut of either 7.5% and 10%; and those making $300,000 or more will take a 10% pay cut.

Long joined football coach Les Miles and basketball coach Bill Self in taking pay cuts in April. When those are combined with the latest cuts, Long said the athletic department would save about $1.15 million.

"We prolonged enacting measures that impact our people as long as we could,'' Long said in the email, "but it has become clear that the across-the-board reductions were necessary for the short and long-term financial needs of this department.''

The St. Joseph School District values the importance of the educational opportunities that athletics provide and recognizes the threats presented by COVID-19. We believe our plan for re-entry will help our student-athletes workout and compete in the safest manner possible.

Phase I: June 15–28 - Conditioning Only

● Daily coach/athlete screening: If temperature is above 100 degrees fahrenheit or the athlete has been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days, the coach/athlete may not remain.

● No water fountain use: Athletes must supply their own water and should show their own water bottle when they are screened.

● No balls or sport-specific work allowed.

● Re-acclimating students to physical conditioning and fitness is the priority.

● We are adhering to limits on the size of gatherings and maintaining social distancing.

● Trainers will do all maintenance work (taping) out on the fields, but we are limiting unnecessary interaction with the training room and trainers.

SPORTS SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES - MAXIMUM NUMBERS

● 30 athletes – main gym (Basketball / Volleyball/ Football – 2 hour shifts)

● 15 athletes – small gym / MPR (Baseball / Softball / Wrestling – 2 hour shifts)

● 15 athletes max in weight room – 1 hour shifts

● 70 athletes outdoor practice (FB / Track)– 2 hour shifts

● 40 athletes outdoor practice (Soccer / Tennis/ Baseball / Softball) – 2 hour shifts

ATHLETES DAILY PREPARATION FOR PRACTICE/PLAY:

● Each individual athlete should make sure they have no symptoms.

● At minimum, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water (minimum 20 seconds) OR use hand sanitizer before AND after practice or competition.

● Clean and wipe down any equipment, Before AND After practice or competition.

● Do NOT share water bottles, equipment, towels, etc.

● Avoid touching your face or any object unless necessary and wash your hands after.

● No high fives, fist bumps or chest bumps.

● Maintain physical distancing from teammates, coaches and other players when taking breaks and between games.

DO NOT ATTEND OR PARTICIPATE IN GROUP/TEAM SPORTS OR PRACTICE IF:

STEPS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19:

● Staying home if you are sick or do not feel well.

● Using social distancing and maintaining at least six feet between individuals in all areas.

● Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throwing the tissue in the trash.

● Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

● Using hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

● Avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

● Limit the number of athletes based on the size and capacity of the room to allow for physical distancing and proper cleaning between athletes.

● Remove and store non-essential equipment to minimize surface cleaning. Athletic training rooms

● Limit athletes based on size/capacity to allow for physical distancing and proper cleaning between athletes.

● No use of cold/ice tubs for groups. However, if heat stroke/illness is a potential, an ice tub should be ready for treatment.

● No use of heat packs, ultrasound, electronic stimulation units initially. These items may be used once the facility has enough cleaning supplies for essential areas and individuals. Continue to clean in between each use.

● Remove and store non-essential equipment to minimize surface cleaning.

● No use of tubs, showers, lockers until physical distancing guidelines are lifted.

● Can be used as bathroom facilities only if appropriate cleaning measures can be completed.

● Conduct consistent and frequent cleaning as outlined by CDC or facilities should be locked if unable to be sufficiently cleaned.

● Adequate hand washing or sanitizer available and restocked on a regular interval.

● Personal equipment should be cleaned with disinfectant before and after each use.

● Avoid community equipment use when possible. If not possible, equipment should be cleaned before and after each individual use. An exception is ball use.

● Water/drinks - Each athlete should have their own individual drink. Encourage extra water options in case an athlete forgets their own water bottle.

● Recommend players have individual containers labeled into which they can place their mouthguard and not have it hanging on a helmet or out in the open.

Lafayette High School has announced the hiring of three new head coaches for the 2020-2021 school year.

The Fighting Irish have hired Laura Rehmeier as the volleyball coach, Kiefer Smith as the track &amp; field and cross country coach, and Chauncey Funk as the girls' golf coach.

Rehmeier comes to Lafayette after coaching at Clinton High School for two years.  The St. Louis native will be a mathematics teacher at LHS.

Smith returns to Lafayette after having been an assistant coach in the past and has also been a head coach at Union Star.  He competed collegiately at Central Methodist University.  Smith will be the 8th grade science teacher at Bode Middle School.

Funk has coached many different sports during his career.  He's coached girls' or boys' basketball at some level since 2000, including at Robidoux Middle School.  Funk has coached golf in the past as he was the boys' golf coach at King City High School.  He'll teach Industrial Technology at Lafayette.

Dave Riggert was able to talk to Missouri Western men's basketball incoming freshman Dalton Marsh.  The Lafayette, Tennessee native talks about why he chose MWSU and kept his commitment after the coaching chance, his relationship with Coach Martin, his high school career and much more.

Marsh played at Red Boiling Springs High School and is the school all-time leading scorer and rebounder as he had over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career. NEW ORLEANS – All-Americans for the 2020 NCAA Division II Indoor Track &amp; Field season were announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Under the direction of second-year head coach Brandon Masters, the Northwest Missouri State University indoor men's and women's indoor track and field teams totaled 20 All-America honorees. Northwest is one of seven NCAA Division II schools to record at least 20 All-Americans in 2020.

"This season was set up to be really special for Northwest track and field," Masters said. "It was unfortunate that we could not compete for a national championship, but it is nice to see our student-athletes rewarded with All-America honors. To be one of only seven programs in the country to have 20 All-Americans is reflective of where we are on the national level. We will continue to strive to produce on the national level and we look forward to the upcoming year and the chance to perform again."

Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded based on classifications of performance at the NCAA Championships.

Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track &amp; Field Championships, the Executive Committee adopted the following criteria:

SPRINGFIELD -- Three Missouri State University student-athletes will have an opportunity of a lifetime this week. Tennis player Ellie Burger (Chesterfield, Mo., soccer goal keeper Kaitlin Maxwell (Lincoln, Neb.) and football offensive lineman Derek Kohler (Platte City, Mo.) have all been selected to participate in the NCAA's National Career in Sports Forum.

The 2020 Career in Sports Forum will take place May 27-29 and brings together selected NCAA student-athletes to learn about and explore potential careers in sports, particularly college athletics. This unique virtual programming experience will help student-athletes chart their career paths, while presenting copious opportunities for attendees to learn from current industry leaders.

Notable speakers will cover a variety of topics to prepare attendees for success navigating their future and their career paths. Through online panels, engaging breakout sessions, keynote presentations and facilitated discussions, program participants will complete their experience with a thorough understanding of athletics as a career path and where they fit into the industry’s landscape.

Through the innovative use of an online platform, participants will undergo a transformative experience that will equip them to thrive in life after their playing days.

The forum platform also allows attendees to network with peers and decision-makers at the campus, conference and national levels of college athletics. 

Both Burger and Maxwell will be entering their senior seasons for the Bears, while Kohler will be a junior this fall.

Three Missouri State athletes selected for NCAA National Career in Sports Forum

Williams, a Plattsburg High School graduate, has finished third in the MIAA two different times in her career.  She was third in the 600 yard at the Indoor Championships this past February and she finished third in the 400 meter at the 2019 Outdoor Championships.

Williams also became the first female in Missouri Western track &amp; field history to qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships, as she so in 2019.

Donna L. Vanier, 85, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020. Following is an obituary from her family and statements from Kansas State University leadership.

The scriptures say, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” Luke 12:48. To Donna Vanier, this was much more than Biblical council. It was a way of life.

Born in Salina, Kansas, on October 24, 1934 to Willis and Helen Lindsey, Donna Vanier is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Douglas. 

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John K. (Jack) Vanier, daughter Mary Vanier of Manhattan, daughter Dr. Marty Vanier of Manhattan and her stepchildren Katie, Kirsten and Kathy, and son John K. Vanier II of Salina, his daughters Lauren and Sarah, his wife Kim, and stepchildren Pallie, Landon, Jess, Ty, Jake &amp; Norah.

Donna Vanier possessed an outlook on life that focused on others and needed to look no further than her own family and community to make a difference. 

When her family’s way of life called, Donna Vanier replied with time, talent and treasure. 

Donna Vanier lived most of her adult life with her husband on the CK Ranch outside of Brookville, Kansas.  As matriarch of a ranch family, her commitment to their way of life did not stop at the fence line. She worked harder at CK Ranch than anyone; active in all aspects of the cattle business including producing the ranch’s annual production sale catalogs, hosting countless ranch tour groups, tracking cattle inventories, and making employees and their families feel valued and appreciated.  Her dedication and support of her family and her family’s work was motivated by care and kindness.  She was one of the founders of the American Hereford Association Auxiliary and sought to ensure leadership in the next generation of agriculture by offering scholarships through the Hereford Youth Foundation and the Kansas 4-H Foundation. 

When Salina Kansas called, Donna Vanier answered with benevolence.

She served as the driving force behind the creation of the Donna L. Vanier Children’s Center which opened in 2012.  Donna also served many years as: treasurer of the Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas; founding board member of the Greater Salina Community Foundation; Chair of the governing Boards of the Salina Regional Health Foundation, the Rolling Hills Museum, and St. John’s Military School; and was a contributing member to countless other local boards and organizations.

When Kansas State University called, Donna Vanier responded with generosity.

At K-State, her service and leadership included roles on the KSU Foundation Board of Directors, the Ahearn Scholarship Board, where she originated the Powercat Auction, and Chair of the Beach Museum of Art Board of Visitors. Through these acts and countless others, Donna Vanier earned the Kansas State University Medal of Excellence, which recognizes those who have advanced K-State through exceptional service, leadership and philanthropic contributions.

When her friends and family called, Donna Vanier was always there with love.

Not one to forget a birthday, anniversary or other significant milestone, Donna Vanier  was the truest of friends and a source of wisdom and kindness. Her many friends from the Salina area, the cattle business and the K-State family brought her immense joy. 

To whom much is given, much will be required. The scripture from Luke is an exhortation to vigilance.  Generosity, strength, benevolence, toughness, vigilance. Over the generations, the Kansas culture has cultivated an apt description for people like Donna Vanier. She was a do-gooder. Wherever she went, Donna Vanier did good. The scripture ends, “And of him to whom they have entrusted much, they will demand more.” As her family stated “Donna understood innately what God expected of her and her life reflected it.” 

Funeral service plans will be made and announced when COVID-19 gathering restrictions are lifted. The family suggests memorial gifts to any of the following organizations:  the St. Francis Ministries of Salina; the KSU Foundation; the Christ Cathedral Endowment Fund in Salina; the Meadowlark Hills Good Samaritan Fund in Manhattan; and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Manhattan. Beginning June 15 football student-athletes will be permitted to access campus athletic facilities and support personnel for voluntary conditioning and training exercises. Big 12 approves phase in for student-athletes to return to campus

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (May 22, 2020)&nbsp;- Voluntary in-person athletics activities may resume on Southeastern Conference campuses, at the discretion of each university, beginning June 8 under strict supervision of designated university personnel and safety guidelines developed by each institution, the SEC announced Friday.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the SEC had suspended all athletics activities through May 31. Under plans developed by each university and consistent with state and local health directives, certain activities will be permitted based on the ability to participate in controlled and safe environments, while also maintaining recommended social distancing measures.

The decision to resume athletics activities, which at this time is limited by the NCAA to voluntary activities supervised by strength and conditioning personnel, was made with the guidance of the Conference's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force. Created by the SEC's Presidents and Chancellors in April and comprised of a cross-section of leading public health, infectious disease and sports medicine professionals from across the SEC's 14 member institutions, the Task Force will remain active to provide continued advice and guidance to the SEC and its members as they prepare for a return to competition.

"The safe and healthy return of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and our greater university communities have been and will continue to serve as our guiding principle as we navigate this complex and constantly-evolving situation," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. "At this time, we are preparing to begin the fall sports season as currently scheduled, and this limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities on June 8 is an important initial step in that process. Thanks to the blueprint established by our Task Force and the dedicated efforts of our universities and their athletics programs, we will be able to provide our student-athletes with far better health and wellness education, medical and psychological care and supervision than they would otherwise receive on their own while off campus or training at public facilities as states continue to reopen."

As part of its recommendations, the Task Force prepared a series of best practices for screening, testing, monitoring, tracing, social distancing and maintaining cleaned environments. These recommendations will serve as a roadmap for each school prior to and upon the return of student-athletes to their campuses.

"While each institution will make its own decisions in creating defined plans to safely return student-athletes to activity, it is essential to employ a collaborative approach that involves input from public health officials, coaches, sports medicine staff, sports performance personnel and student-athletes," Sankey said. "Elements of the Task Force recommendations provided key guidance for determining the date of the return to activity."

In addition to standard infection prevention measures as approved by public health authorities such as facility cleaning and social distancing, recommended enhanced health and safety measures include:

During the month of June, NCAA regulations permit only strength and conditioning personnel to supervise voluntary on-campus athletics activities in the sports of football and men's &amp; women's basketball. A current waiver that permits eight (8) hours of virtual film review has been extended through June 30 for football and basketball.

Consistent with NCAA regulations, organized practices and other required physical activities remain prohibited in all sports. A previously announced suspension of in-person camps and coaches clinics conducted by SEC institutions remains in effect until July 31.

the St. Louis Cardinals announced that Tom Herr,
John Tudor and Bill White will be inducted into

by the fans, Tom Herr and John Tudor were the top two-vote getters in the
Cardinals Hall of Fame online balloting presented by Edward Jones.&nbsp; The
ballot, which also included Cardinals legends Steve Carlton, Keith Hernandez,
Matt Morris, Edgar Renteria and Lee Smith, was selected by a Red Ribbon
committee of St. Louis baseball experts through a secret ballot process.&nbsp;
Cardinals fans cast a record 113,000 votes over the nine-week voting period.

In addition to
nominating modern players for fan balloting, the Red Ribbon Committee also
elected Bill White, a veteran player, for induction using a secret ballot
process.&nbsp; White, a Gold Glove first baseman and African-American pioneer,
was a starter for the Cardinals from 1959-1965 and returned to finish his
career in 1969.&nbsp; The 1964 World Champion would later become the first
black president of a major sports league when he was named National League
President in 1989.
