

Sharon Kay (Shoemaker) Freeman, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020.

She was born May 22, 1949 to Jay and Alta (Holcomb) Shoemaker.

Sharon Shoemaker married Virgil Freeman January 25, 1969. They celebrated their 51st Anniversary last month.

She lived in Gower, Missouri for 20 years, then followed her husband to multiple schools and towns across the state before settling in Maryville and retiring in St. Joseph.

Sharon devoted her life to her family and loved her grandsons. She was known for her baking and candy making skills. Known as “Momma Freeman” to many football players, over the years she opened her home for them to come and eat cookies before games.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Garry Shoemaker.

Survivors include Virgil, of the home; daughter, Shelly (David); grandsons, Corey and Colby; and great granddaughter, Grace Lucille Rapp.

The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory. Private inurnment Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Frazier Baptist Church or Freeman Freewill Baptist Church.

Lorna B. Corder, 96, of St. Joseph, Missouri, was born on April 22, 1923 and died on February 9, 2020.

Lorna was a graduate of Welda High School and of the University of Kansas where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business and worked for TWA. Lorna was born and reared in Welda, Kansas. She married Robert Corder on July 28, 1945 in Garnett, Kansas. He preceded her in death January 21, 1996.

Lorna was a dedicated, loving mother, and supportive partner of more than fifty years, and an avid golf and bridge player both in Highland and St. Joseph. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church of St. Joseph.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Robbie and Mattie (Skillman) Ecclefield and four siblings, Tom Ecclefield, Bobbie Ecclefield, Elaine Keen and Wayne Ecclefield.

Survivors include Dr. Robert, Jr. (Karen, Mark (Elaine, Scott (Barbara, Laura Bond, Ronald (Sherry) and Susan Christy (Steve). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Downey, 62, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020, after a nine-month battle with cancer.

She was born January 8, 1958 in Plattsburg, Missouri.

Beth was preceded in death by her mother, Phyllis (Edwards) Downey.

Survivors include her life partner, Mary Robinett; siblings, Bonnie Spradlin (Bill, Vernon Downey, Scott Downey (Denise, Jerry Downey (Angie); close friend, Lisa Hancock; beloved animals, Murphy, Buddy, Dixie; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Beth and her partner, Mary Robinett, and a few close friends opened Zercher Photo in 1989 and she was an owner/operator of the establishment until it's closing in 2007. In 2006 Beth and friend Lisa Hancock began an open mic acoustic coffee house in the gallery of Zercher. The next year she and her business partner, Lisa, opened Cafe Acoustic. There she made friendships that would last a lifetime. Music was an integral part of who she was. She not only wrote her own music, played guitar, and sang, she also engineered the recordings of her band "House Blend" as well as the live recordings of performances at Cafe Acoustic resulting in three live CD's, a first in St. Joseph, MO. There are also many beautiful recordings of Beth and Mary harmonizing as only they can do.

Beth was also an excellent photographer and artist. Her subjects typically involved the beauty and wonder of nature. She could spot an eagle from a mile away, all the time saying, "You just have to look up." Her love for animals and nature were put to good use during her tenure working for the Remington Nature Center, during the last stage of her life.

Beth was also a very spiritual individual who had many stories of personal experiences confirming the existence of life beyond this plane. She never doubted that she would once again see all of her loved ones who had gone before. She loved her family and friends beyond measure and was comforted greatly by their presence during her last days.

From the first day of her diagnosis she was the one comforting others and telling us all "I can do this." And she did it with humor and grace.

She was extremely good at home projects, with her favorite word being "D.O.N.E." She did so much for others during her short time with us and left us with cherished memories of her kindness.

Her work here is now done, and we are saddened by this great loss, but take joy in knowing she is out of pain, and we are better people for having known her.

The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory. Alfred “Al” Zach, 97, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at his home.

He was born on March 18, 1922 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.

While serving as a Sergeant in the military and stationed at Rosecrans Field, Al met Virginia Thompson at a USO dance. They married on December 24, 1944, at her home in St. Joseph.

After a brief period in California, Al and Virginia returned to St. Joseph to join the family business, G.A. Thompson Paint and Wallpaper.

Al was a man of many interests. A voracious reader of books and newspapers, he also loved sports. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed riding his bicycle, even into his eighties. Then he switched to walking, and he knew the names of all the dogs he encountered on his route. Al walked the track at Noyes Field and often climbed the steps of the bleacher’s multiple times in the early morning.

His lifelong friends included Gilbert Pickett, whom he met in the late 1940’s. They were lunchtime regulars at Frederick Inn for a number of years. Al was able to remain in his own home with assistance of several friends, including Kenny O’Meara and his family and Gilbert’s family.

Al was preceded in death by his wife in 2012; son, Ron Zach in 1974; three brothers; one sister; and brother-in-law, George Thompson.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Zach, Richardson, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews, including Julie Thompson Randall, Chicago, Herbie Kay Wood, St. Joseph and Pat Teegarden, Overland Park, KS.

Betty Harr Campbell, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020.

She was born March 20, 1927 in Browning, Missouri.

Betty married Worthie Harr on April 28, 1946; he preceded her in death April 19, 1999. She married James Campbell August 25, 2005; he preceded her in death September 19, 2009.

Betty was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and Nursery Director for 50 years.

She enjoyed quilting, sewing and loved spending time with family. Betty was a great cook and never had an enemy. One of her favorite things was to watch her grandsons play church league softball. She loved to see them hit a home run.

Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Alpha (Mundell) Powell; 4 siblings; and stepdaughter, Alicia McKinnon.

Survivors include her children, Sharon Koranda (Bob, Karen Smith (Bob, Randy Harr (Gina); stepson, Larry Campbell (Jan); grandchildren, Shelly Dreier (Tim, Kerry Carson, Chad Bradford, Stephanie St. Denney, Rob Smith, Isaac Harr, Daniel Harr (Amy, Lydia Embrey (Josh); 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Reynolds; sister-in-law, Vera Harr; several nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was married to Lloyd “Dobber” Jones on Nov. 9, 1949 in Atchison KS. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 2003. 

Survivors include three sons Dean (Linda) Jones, Smithville, MO, Bryan (Dorothy) Jones, and Tony (Dawn) Jones, both of Rushville, MO, four daughters, Kathy (Roger) Lewis, Topeka, KS, Kris Duty, Blue Springs, MO, Deirdre (Teddy) Anderson, Atchison KS, and Laurie (David) Donaldson, St. Joseph, MO, a half sister, Linda (Jim) Miller, Atchison, KS, sixteen grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. Shirley Marlene Jones (Bryan)  1931 - 2020

Carl Calvin Conard, 82, of Country Club, Missouri passed away Saturday February 15, 2020 at his home. 

He was born October 10, 1937 in Platte County, Missouri son of the late Genevieve "Jenny" &amp; Orville Conard. He married Eleanor Miller on September 22, 1968, at San Diego, CA. He attended Weston High School. Chief Petty Officer Conard retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service. He was a Deep Sea Saturation Diver, and is a veteran of the Vietnam War (1964 &amp; 1969). He received the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign medal, as well as 4 good conduct medals. Carl was very proud of our flag and serving in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling the USA, and canoeing in Missouri. He is survived by wife, Eleanor Diane Conard of the home, MO, sons: Carl E. Conard, Kansas City, MO, and Steven G. (Erin) Conard, Saugus, CA, step son, Lyle W, Hunter, El Cajon, CA, step-daughter, Cheryl A. Gardner of Country Club Village, MO, brother, Gary G. Gilbert, St. Joseph, MO, sisters: Dorothy Stegal, and Joann Becket-Dassero both of St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren: Jason and Jared Crabb, Justin and Jacob Conard, Hannah Conard, Danielle Hunter, great grandchildren: Jared, Tate and Oliver Crabb. 

The family will receive friends from 2-3 pm Saturday with a Celebration of life at 3:00 p.m. Saturday February 22, 2020 at the Rupp Chapel. Carl Calvin Conard, 82, of Country Club, Missouri passed away Saturday February 15, 2020 at his home. He was born October 10, 1937 in Platte County, Missouri son of the late Genevieve "Jenny" &amp; Orville Conard. He married Eleanor Miller on September 22, 1968, at San Diego, CA. He attended Weston High School. Chief Petty Officer Conard retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service. He was a Deep Sea Saturation Diver, and is a veteran of the Vietnam War (1964 &amp; 1969). He received the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign medal, as well as 4 good conduct medals. Carl was very proud of our flag and serving in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling the USA, and canoeing in Missouri. Duane Lynn Cress 56, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday February 16, 2020 in Saint Joseph. 

He was born February 10, 1964 in Southern, Missouri son of the late Verna &amp; Hugh Cress. He graduated from Central High School. He was presently working at BMS logistics. He was an accomplished artist, and enjoyed playing the guitar, was very fun, wise and witty, and never had a bad thing to say about anybody. 

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, step son, Alex Adkins, grandson, Grayson, and brother, Doug Cress.

There is not, never was, nor will ever be a sprit as radiant as Matthew Gordon Nold.There was a lad. Aye, there was a lad!Matthew was born the oldest of seven siblings on September 12, 1976, to Catharine Maher (Whitlark) and Mark Daniel Nold. He grew up a good midwestern boy, with a love for the outdoors and baseball, foreign cultures and martial arts, film and music, family and friends. That love evolved toward academics and the culinary arts. He earned multiple degrees and, as a chef, he fed, entertained and inspired the lives of multitudes across much of this great nation!

Matthew’s imagination, wit, energy and spirit soared above us in life. In death, he is with us all.

His was one of ineffable charm, charisma, humor, brilliance, passion, and love for life - all of us blessed to have known him, we know.

We know he is at peace with our Lord, Jesus Christ, among family and friends, feasting at the Lord’s table.

Matthew was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Ian Patrick.He is survived by his parents, sisters Margaret, Maureen, Kathleen; brothers Luke (Jackie, and Mark (Rylie); many nieces and nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Thomas Frakes Downing 88, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 in DeKalb, MO. at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family. 

Tom was born July 29, 1931 in Dekalb, MO, son of Addie and John Downing. He graduated from DeKalb High School. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He served in the Marines from 1952 - 1954 and is a veteran of the Korean War in which he held very close to his heart. After the service, he went to work at Seitz where he retired after over 40 years of service. Tom enjoyed working in his garden and giving vegetables to everyone. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and frog hunting with his brother-in-law and best bud, Jimmy Matthews. He also enjoyed the Saturday night card games with his partners, Jimmy and Lula Belle against James and Rose Matthews and Bonnie. Tom passed his love of the outdoors to his son and grandsons and his sons-in-law. Early in is adult life he enjoyed fast pitch softball where he passed that love onto his children and coached several of their teams. He also enjoyed wood working and making things for the yard. Tom was one of the founding members of the DeKalb Fire Protection District, where he retired as captain after 22 years of service. He also served on the Buchanan County R4 School Board. He served as mayor of DeKalb for several years. 

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie of 67 years, his children: daughters, Teresa (Charlie) Scott, Lisa (Allen) Anders, Lori (Brian) Stickler, son, Tommy Joe (Renee) Downing, grandchildren: Cameron (Emily) Stickler, Emily (Josh) Pittman, Addie (Cody) Stoll, Chase Scott, Josh (Jessica) Downing, and JD Downing, great grandchildren: Colin Stickler, Miles Jacobs, Logan Pittman, Emily Daniels, Remmington Downing, Charlie Stoll, and Kenny Daniels, and his sister, Lula Belle Matthews, many loving nieces and nephews, and more friends than we know. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lola and Mary Jo Downing, and Helen Bush, brothers, Bill, JT, Mack"George" Downing.

Rachel Ruth (Loubey) Long 81, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 8, 2020 in a Savannah, MO health care center. 

She was born June 27, 1938 in Iatan, MO, daughter of the late Anita and Leo Loubey. She graduated from Faucett High School in 1957, and married Frank Long Jr on August 13, 1961, he has preceded her in death, along with her parents, daughter-in-law, Becky Long, and brother Albert Loubey. 

She worked at Stetson Hats for many years, and she was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ. 

She is survived by: sons, Michael (Sheila) Long, Rockford, IL, Terry (Donna) Long, Pryor, OK, and Frankie Long, St. Joseph, MO., daughters, Susan (Mark) Embrey and Veronica Long, both of St. Joseph, MO, and 10 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, niece Ann (Greg) Larkey, and nephews, John (Tracy) Loubey, and Albert Loubey.&nbsp;

The Interment will be at the Leavenworth National Cemetery with her husband.&nbsp;

Suzanne "Suzie" Forcade-Haas 84, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully from this life on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care in Saint Joseph, with her family at her side. 

Elmina Suzanne was born October 28, 1935 in Avalon, Missouri, daughter of the late J. Curtis and Mary P. Forcade. Suzie grew up in Northwest Missouri and Conway, Iowa, graduating from Graham High School, in Graham, MO in 1953. She co-owned Pflueger's Marine Taxidermy in Hallendale, Fl. where she lived for nearly 50 years. In 2017 she returned to Northwest Missouri to live with her sister, Elaine Elder at Corby Place in St. Joseph. 

Suzie was preceded in death by her parents, her 13 month old daughter, Virginia Ellen, her domestic partner of 44 years, Ida Mae "Snookie" Ulery, and three brothers in law. 

Family surviving are sisters; Elaine Elder of the home, sister, Dorinda DePriest, of Maryville, MO, Mary Lynne Forcade, of California, two nieces: Brenda (Tony) Foster of Savannah, MO, Risa (David) Ditamore of Maryville, MO, seven nephews: Bob Probasco and Peggy Gitt of Dallas, TX, Jim (Carol) Probasco of Shelbyville, TN., John (Anita) Ewart of Stewartsville, MO., Patrick Sean Babb of Kansas City, MO, and Ronnie (Lia) DePriest of Kansas City, MO; Tom (Pam) Ulery of Pennsylvania, Jim Ulery also of Pennsylvania; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. 

Suzanne will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. There will be a Celebration of her Life at a later date. She will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Ron "Ronnie" Robinson passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2020 after a brief illness.

Ron was born on March 16, 1931 in St. Joseph to Corliss and Mary Robinson and went to school at St. Mary's Grade School, Christian Brothers High School and Northwest Missouri State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Ron proudly served his country in the Korean War as a member of the Missouri Air National Guard which was the first Guard unit to be activated during the war and he remained in the unit for many years after the war was over.

Ron worked for the Missouri Highway Department for 34 years, retiring in 1992 as the head of the Right of Way Department. He played slow pitch softball for the Highway Department's "Roadrunners" team.

Ron married Beverly Owens on Valentine's Day 1957. They had two sons, Bob (Shawna) Robinson of Phoenix, AZ and Paul (Danette Myers) Robinson of St. Joseph and grandchildren Sarah, Scott and Kelley, great-grandchildren Evan, Kaelin, Silas and Bradley, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.&nbsp; He was especially close to his nephew Mark Hillebrand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother Corliss "Corky" Robinson.

Some of &nbsp;Ron's fondest memories were as a child, spending time as a proud member of the Mastio family and he often spoke of the large family gatherings at his Grandma Mastio's house.&nbsp; His mother was one of 19 children born to George and Frances Mastio.

Other fond memories were coaching Little League Baseball for his boys, camping trips and spending time with his family and friends.

Ron loved live music, watching Chiefs football and was an avid Sprint car fan. He was well known for his love of fast, shiny cars and his ornery&nbsp; personality.

Ron was a devoted Catholic his entire life and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.&nbsp;

Ron will be sadly missed by all but he is now in Heaven with his wife and family.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to The St. Francis Xavier House of Bread.

Ronald "Ronnie" R. Robinson  1931 - 2020

Allen Maag passed away in his home on February 9, 2020.&nbsp; Allen was born June 22, 1936 to Raleigh Morgan and Icle Parlee (Allen) Maag. He worked on the family farm until his employment at Strathman Studio in St. Joseph, Missouri. Allen later worked for Missouri Water &amp; Steam in St. Joseph and was a great asset to the plumbing industry. Through the years he developed and ran Maag Saw Tool &amp; Sharpening Service. He finished his career at Lowe's until retirement.&nbsp;

Allen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois (Allen) Maag. Lois' dad and Allen's Uncle Russell Maag were both HAM amateur radio operators and became great friends. Uncle Russell would bring his banjo, then his Hawaiian steel guitar. Lois played guitar and sang. He told her about his good looking nephew who played bass. He introduced them and soon Allen and Lois were playing music together ... and fell in love.

Allen thoroughly enjoyed playing music, camping, fly fishing, fly tieing, and gardening. He was schooled in machining and welding at Hillyard Vocational-Technical School. His projects he took on were tedious and difficult, so much so his teacher used his finished products as examples to others. He would tinker with just about anything in need of a repair, and even re-plumbed his travel trailer during his yearly fishing excursion while at Bennett Springs.&nbsp; If he didn't have the tool, he would make it.

Allen had two younger siblings.&nbsp; Erma Ruth (Maag) Mesa (deceased) and Linda (Maag) Spence Baker.&nbsp; Two children, Allen Leon (&amp; Rita) Maag and Karen Sue (Maag) Gibbs. Six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.&nbsp; He was very loved and will be greatly missed.

Allen Maag passed away in his home on February 9, 2020.&nbsp; Allen was born June 22, 1936 to Raleigh Morgan and Icle Parlee (Allen) Maag. He worked on the family farm until his employment at Strathman Studio in St. Joseph, Missouri. Allen later worked for Missouri Water &amp; Steam in St. Joseph and was a great asset to the plumbing industry. Through the years he developed and ran Maag Saw Tool &amp; Sharpening Service. He finished his career at Lowe's until retirement.&nbsp;Allen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois (Allen) Maag. Lois' dad and Allen's Uncle Russell Maag were both HAM amateur radio operators and became great friends. Uncle Russell would bring his banjo, then his Hawaiian steel guitar. Lois played guitar and sang. He told her about his good looking nephew who played bass. He introduced them and soon Allen and Lois were playing music together ... and fell in love.Allen thoroughly enjoyed playing music, camping, fly fishing, fly tieing, and gardening. He was schooled in machining and welding at Hillyard Vocational-Technical School. His projects he took on were tedious and difficult, so much so his teacher used his finished products as examples to others. Herman Lloyd Elrod, 98, St. Joseph, MO; passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at a local healthcare facility.

Herman was born on May 14, 1921 to the late Ocle and Nellie (Knorr) Elrod in Clarksdale, MO.

He was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph.

In 1942 he began his honorable and distinguished service to his country in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a aeronautical engineer where he flew on 30 missions over Germany. Following the war he stayed in the Air Corps until it became the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He also served in the Korean War flying on 14 missions.

Herman remained in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement from the military in 1963 where he had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.

After his military service, He embarked on a career in facilities maintenance beginning with Townsend &amp; Wall, and the former Missouri Methodist Hospital and finally with Carnation Pet Foods where he retired as their purchasing agent. &nbsp;

Herman was known to be able to fix anything, but as a hobby, he was also known to be a meticulous woodworking craftsman and many people marveled at his work over the decades.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On February 15, 1969 Herman married his wife Ernestine in St. Joseph. They celebrated nearly 51 years of marriage. She survives him of the home. Additional survivors include; step-granddaughters Debbie (Scott) Young, and Denise Hobbs both of Atlanta, GA., three great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Elrod &nbsp;was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson Larry O. Fisher.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The St. Francis Xavier House of Bread.

She was born November 18, 1963 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Stephanie graduated from South Houston High School in Pasadena, Texas then later attended Missouri Western State University where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sorority. She taught for the St. Joseph School District for 23 years. Teaching children was her passion.

Stephanie enjoyed shopping, traveling and most of all spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Myers; and sister, Shelly Brock

He was born March 5, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hub married Anna “Ruth” Drake September 2, 1977. She survives of the home.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines from 1942 to 1946. Hub retired from Whitaker Cable after many years of employment.

He enjoyed watching baseball, taking care of his lawn, cars, fishing and was a devoted Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Hub was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Sylvia (Dyer) Wright; and nephew, Kenny Koons.

Additional survivors include daughter, Linda Hart; granddaughters, Amy Duffield (Robert, Cynthia Gese (Darin); sister, Esther Koons; nieces, Susan Kneib and Sally Morlock; cousin, Ted Wright.

Robert worked various jobs throughout his life; rock crusher operator and rock crew supervisor for Hamm’s Quarry, bridge construction carpenter in Kansas City, plumber’s assistant, drove trucks for Allan Weishaar Trucking, and owned his own auto repair shop in McLouth for a brief time. Robert enjoyed playing pool, listening to music, working on cars, and along with friends participated in Dirt Track Racing. Robert was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Nortonville Knights of Columbus Council 2093.

Robert is survived by his mother, Linda, of Nortonville; his siblings, Michael (Sheila) Libel, II of Winchester, Andrew Libel, Winchester, Christina Libel, Nortonville, Edward (Tracey) Libel, Winchester, and Lt. Colonel Bryan (Heidi) Libel, West Linn, OR; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Michael, on June 7, 2005.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00pm on Friday, Feb. 14th, 2020 at the funeral home. Following the memorial celebration service, visitation will continue at the Elks Lodge, 609 Kansas Ave from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. Dave was born on May 8, 1949 in Kansas City, KS, the son of Edgar W. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Gullikson) Butler. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1972. David worked with his father in the family Butler RX Prescription business in Atchison. Following his dad’s retirement he owned and operated the business until he joined with Reynolds Drug Store. Dave also was the first full-time Pharmacist for the Atchison Hospital. After retiring from the hospital pharmacy he volunteered as a pharmacist at the Atchison Community Health Clinic and worked part time for the KEX RX Pharmacy, Atchison, KS. In 1993 he was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Award from the National Pharmacy Association for his community service and also named Citizen of the Year by the Atchison Daily Globe. He was a member of the Kansas Pharmacy Association, a former member of the Atchison Jaycees, a member of the National Rifle Assoc, Bellevue Country Club, Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Scouting, and the Fred Noonan Society, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer. Dave was active in the Elks BPO Lodge serving as Exalted Ruler two times, in 1976 and in 2019. He was a member of the Atchison Bass Club, Willie’s Coffee Club, had served on the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was an Atchison City Commissioner for over 23 years, and served as Mayor of Atchison for several terms. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, smoking a cigar, and bourbon. Mr. Butler was one of the most dedicated, positive people who never knew a stranger and loved to talk up, promote, and work to improve his home town of Atchison, KS. He was proud of the new bridge project that he and the commission worked so hard on getting built during his time on the commission. He also was an avid KU Basketball Fan and KU Alumnus.

Dave was married to Kathleen M. Bell on Feb. 14, 1976. Kathy survives of their home in Atchison. Additional survivors include a son Greg J. (Tanya) Butler, Manhattan, KS and daughter Shari S. (Chad) Roth, Newton, KS and five grandchildren Brendan Butler, Madison Roth, Anabel Roth, Riley Roth, and Evie Roth. His parents, and two brothers, Steven and Harlan, preceded him in death.

Dorothy married Edward Boatwright on August 17, 1944; he preceded her on February 17, 2006. Survivors include a sister, Mary Kay and Charles Zabel, Boulder, CO, nephews and nieces; Bruce and Phyllis Filley, St. Joseph, MO, Patricia and Kenny Massingill, Bashor, KS, Brent Filley, Hunnewell, MO, Jeff Zabel and Pete Zabel, CO., and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded by her parents and a brother, Frank Charles Filley.

He was a bright-blue eyed, loving brother, son and grandson. He was a ray of sunshine and touched many lives. He made everyone’s heart happy. He lived every minute of his life to the fullest. He loved to play with his siblings, swing, swim, cuddle, watch “The Grinch,” listen to music and be outdoors.
