James Howard Ginn, 79, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021.

He was born June 6, 1941 in Plattsburg, Missouri to Malcolm Shade and Viola Ginn.

James was a member of Tes Trams Club and also a Shriner in Kansas City, Missouri.

He enjoyed fishing and socializing with his friends at the VFW and Hickory Tavern.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Anthony Ginn; parents; brother, Truman Ginn; sisters, Mary Ann Carriger and Imogene Grayson.

Survivors include children, James Hupp (Veronica), Jeffrey Ginn Sr. (Bobbie), William Hupp (Cathy), Brenton Morgan, Karla Powell, Devan Harris, Jeremy Ginn (Jessica), Danyelle Ginn, Malcolm Ginn, Jordan Ginn Victor Grayson; aunt, Ruth M. Eva Pryor, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home in Kirksville, Missouri Thursday, February 4, 2021 surrounded by family.

She was born February 18, 1928 in Fillmore, Missouri to James Henry and Lena (Hardin) Heckman. Eva married Billy Joe Pryor in April 1948. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1980.

She was a homemaker and a prolific crocheter who enjoyed bird watching, fishing, and spending time surrounded by family. Eva was a member of the Fillmore Christian Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by husband; daughter-in-law, Pat Pryor; her parents; and nine siblings.

Survivors include children, Ronny Pryor, Elizabeth Hartnett (Dr. Ron), Billie Hartman (Bruce), Rex Pryor (Sandy), and Benny Pryor (Corie); sisters, Dorothy Hagee and Norma Barton; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

John E. Bunkowski, 88, Wathena, Kansas passed away Monday, February 1, 2021.

He was born July 22, 1932 in St. Joseph, Missouri to John and Nellie (McKeever) Bunkowski. John was a graduate of Christian Brothers. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. John married Barbara Anderson October 29, 1952.

He retired after 37 years with Safeway grocery as a store manager. John was a member of the Eagles Lodge. &nbsp;

He enjoyed fishing, camping, and boating.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bill “Bunny” Bunkowski.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Barbara Ruth; 3 children, Edward L. Bunkowski (Debbie), Eldon, Missouri, Debra L. Graham, St. Joseph, Missouri, Bryan L. Ernie Worthen, 77 of Wathena, KS, went to be with his Lord February 4, 2021, after a long fight with cancer. He was born March 12, 1943 in St. Joseph, MO to Ernest and Bessie Worthen.

His family moved to Long Beach, CA and Ernie completed his entire education there. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served four years aboard a destroyer. While in the Navy, he met the love of his life Lawanda Morgan and married her on August 2, 1964 after being Honorably Discharged. She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

After trying several occupations, he found that being part of the family at St. Joseph Packaging Company was satisfactory and retired from there after 28 years.

His children and pets were important to Ernie. Memorials can be made to Friends of the Shelter or St. Jude's Hospital for Children. A private family service after cremation is planned.

She was born January 16, 1935, to John and Elnora Walker. She grew up on the family farm in Barnard, Missouri.

Gaylene married Wilbur Berryman September 16, 1955, and was blessed with two sons.

She was a faithful servant of Christ and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Gaylene was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur; parents; and brother Nyle Walker.

Gaylene leaves behind her sons, Keith Berryman (Charlotte Jarrett), Kevin Berryman (Dawn); grandchildren, Clista Jarrett, Nathan (Melissa Kirkpatrick), Summer (Loon Allen) and Danae Berryman; and six great-grandchildren.

Dennis Ray Burks Sr., 61, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

He was born October 2, 1959 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Barbara and Raymond Burks. Dennis attended Benton High School. On February 7, 2015, he married Paula Lofton. Dennis worked for City of St. Joseph in the Street Department and at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and was active in the local Union. His hobbies included collecting die cast cars, clocks, enjoying his collection of old movies, spending time with his dog Pepper and always had a good story to share. He was always willing to help anyone in need. 

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents. 

Survivors include, wife, Paula Burks of St. Joseph, son, Dennis R. (Megan Murray) Burks Jr. of St Joseph, step-daughter, Katrina Lofton, brother, Terry (Lesli) Burks of Lees Summit, MO, sister, Shelly (Sean) Aebersold of St. Joseph, grandchildren, Zander Ray Burks, Ky'Ana Burks and Xavier Paden, great-granddaughters, Taylyn and Everleigh Paden and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis Ray Burks Sr.  1959 - 2021

John Duane Drysdale, 83, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully Sunday January, 31, 2021.&nbsp; He was born October 7, 1937 in Neosho, MO to John and Dorothy (Griffith) Drysdale.

He graduated from Benton High School in 1956 where he played baseball and basketball.&nbsp; He was one of the best pitchers in the area and after graduation he played on the New York Yankees minor league team in Quincy, IL.&nbsp; After his baseball career ended, he served in the U.S Army National Guard from 1958 - 1964.

He married Patty Keeven of Faucett on February 28, 1970 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.&nbsp; They were blessed to have celebrated their 50th anniversary with family last year.

He was a retired Teamster and 4th Degree lifetime member of Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed all sports and especially loved coaching his children's softball, baseball and basketball teams.&nbsp; He spent many evenings with them practicing pitching, hitting and shooting.&nbsp; He was also an avid high school basketball referee and was chosen to officiate multiple State Championship games.

He loved his children and grandchildren, his dogs Reno, Sparky and Butch and visiting with friends and neighbors.

Survivors include wife Patricia; daughter, Debbie Gregg (Heath) of Kansas City, MO; son, Derek Drysdale (Susie) of Leawood, KS; grandchildren, Hannah Gregg, Hayden Gregg, Beatrice Drysdale, Davis Drysdale, and Drew Drysdale.

Sylvia Ruth Thornton was born in Hiawatha, September 14, 1943, one of eleven children of Wilbert and Phebe Enyart Thornton and had lived in this area nearly all of her life where she attended Hiawatha schools.&nbsp; Sylvia worked in housekeeping for area nursing homes for a number of years prior to babysitting for several Hiawatha families.

She died Monday evening, February 1, 2021, at Hiawatha Community Hospital where she was admitted hours earlier.

Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday.

A Celebration of Sylvia’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 6, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, with Pastor Blake Wyatt officiating.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.&nbsp;

She was born November 24, 1927 in St. Joseph, Missouri to George and Florence (Pobanz) Walters.

Virginia married Raymond Halter and in 1985 they moved to St. Joseph from Cameron, Missouri. She loved to fish and would spend winters in Texas fishing.

Virginia was the leader of the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band. She was a professional softball player in the 1940’s. She also loved horses. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Barbara Davis, George Walters, Doris Combs, and Mabel Auxier.

Survivors include nieces, Kelley Tripp, Kim Utz; nephews, Mark Walters (Susan), Cory Auxier (Kelley), Eric Auxier (Beth); numerous great-nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Robert “Bob” R. Reed, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 1, 2021.

He was born January 7, 1940 in Grant City, Missouri to Clarence William and Wanda Agnes (Johnson) Reed. Bob was the last remaining of their six children.

Bob married Judith Kay Root on August 27, 1960. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She survives of the home. He grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from Benton High School in 1958. He then worked as a meat cutter for 42 years, retiring from Food 4 Less. Bob loved bowling, hunting and fishing. He loved to travel with his friends from Westminster Presbyterian Church. He had been an elder and deacon in the church, as well as a member of the church choir. He also sang in the St. Joseph Community Chorus.

Bob loved camping with family and sailing with friends. He loved cooking with his son-in-law, Brad, while they both did their best impersonations of Julia Child.

He was so happy to see his Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl. He also loved his kitty cat, Joy.

Most of all, Bob loved his Lord and Savior. He always wanted to walk again, and now he’s walking with Jesus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and four brothers. Survivors include his wife, Judy; daughters, Jeanetta Milner (Brad), Jayna Fitch (Dennis) and Kari Turner (Del); grandchildren, Alicia Higgins (Dylan), Breanna Richey, Kalen Turner (Bre), Landon Turner (Breanna), Garrett Turner, Alayna Turner, and Jaime Tabeek (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Kinsley, Kadence and Killian Turner, and Kennedy and Logan Tabeek.

Carol Rosalee Butterfield, 77, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2021 at her home. 

She was born October 7, 1943 in Vancouver, WA, daughter of Ruth and Ralph Jones. She married Ronald Butterfield on December 22, 1962. Carol worked at Johnson Controls, retiring in 2006 after 30 years. Her hobbies included going to the casino, fishing, working in her yard, gardening and spending time with her family at the cabin. 

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ronald Gordon Butterfield, Sr., son, Ronald Gordon Butterfield, Jr.,sisters, Roberta Bair and Rita Campbell, brothers, Richard Jones and Delbert Jones and sister-in-law, Shirley Jones. 

Survivors include her niece, whom she considered a daughter, Jane (Alan) Mills of St Joseph, brothers, Ralph David Jones and George (Janet) Jones and several other nieces and nephews.

Emma Catherine Ray, 35, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, January 28, 2021 in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born on June 10, 1985 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She grew up in St. Joseph and graduated from Benton High School in 2003. She briefly attended Missouri Western State University and Missouri State University. She resided in Springfield, Missouri, Oswego, New York and most recently in Kansas City, Missouri. She was employed in food service and retail.

Emma was a kind, caring, loving sweet soul and loyal friend to many. She had the most unique sense of humor and was always smiling. She could always find humor even in the most challenging situations. She was compassionate, yet a stoic and strong lady. An extremely talented artist and gifted teacher, a left-handed, right-brained artsy-fartsy person who delighted many with her FIMO (clay) creations. Any gift from Emma was chosen from her heart and with extensive thought. She loved pet rats and cats, football, and was an avid Patriots fan. Music was also a big part of her life and she loved to perform karaoke with friends. She absolutely loved The Nightmare Before Christmas and making costumes for Halloween.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, William B. and Jessie Ide and her paternal grandparents, Richard G. and Marjorie Ray.

She is survived by her parents, Paula (Steve) Wilson and Richard F. Ray, two brothers, Jordan (Holly Keaveny) Ray and Caleb Ray, several aunts and uncles, many cousins and her cat, Boo.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 3, 2021 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Services will follow at 7 pm at the funeral home. The family respectfully requests the wearing of masks and the practice of social distancing amid this pandemic.

William (Bill) Brandon Butrick Jr. born November 28, 1950 on the family farm in Iowa Point, Kansas, the son of William B. Butrick Sr. and Majorie L. Walton Butrick, passed away January 29, 2021 at the Mosaic Life Care Hospital in Saint Joseph. Missouri.&nbsp; He was 70 years old.

Bill graduated with the Highland High School class of 1968 and the class of 1970 from Highland Community College.&nbsp; In 1972 he received his Bachelor's of Science in Psychology degree from Missouri Western College in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Bill worked at the Horton Bank as a supervisor of loan maintenance.&nbsp; In July of 1991 he started work for the City of Highland as city clerk.&nbsp; He retired in 2011 after 20 years of service.&nbsp;

Bill enjoyed retirement by going to the family farm and spending time there, whether it was mowing, gardening, or tending to the cattle and fishing.&nbsp; Each morning he looked forward to meeting his friends for breakfast and coffee.&nbsp; His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his son Jeff and his family and watching his three grandsons participate in sports.

He married Melody L. Hopper on September 16, 1977 in Troy, KS and they made their home in Highland.

Survivors include his wife Melody Butrick of the home; a son Jeffrey Butrick (Aislinn) of Valley Falls, KS; a brother Darrell Butrick of Saint Joseph, MO; a sister Wilma White (Don) of Lawrence, KS; three grandsons Brennen, Brayson and Bentley Miller and numerous nephews and great nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents William B. Butrick Sr. and Majorie L. Butrick.&nbsp;

William Brandon Butrick, Jr.  1950 - 2021

Darrel M. Hanson, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, January 31 2021.

He was born August 26, 1933 in St. Joseph to Ralph L. and Mary R. (Thompson) Hanson.

Darrel was a 1951 graduate of Central High School. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He was a pharmacist for the State of Missouri for 50 years. He also owned an over-the-road trucking company. After retirement, he volunteered for the American Red Cross for many years.

Darrel was a member of the Cosby Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post No. 359.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Darrel M. Hanson, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, January 31 2021. He was born August 26, 1933 in St. Joseph to Ralph L. and Mary R. (Thompson) Hanson. Darrel was a 1951 graduate of Central High School. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a pharmacist for the State of Missouri for 50 years. He also owned an over-the-road trucking company. After retirement, he volunteered for the American Red Cross for many years. Darrel was a member of the Cosby Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post No. 359. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include sons, Kevin, Michael and Scot Hanson; stepdaughter, Cindy Graham; and longtime friend, Ruby Copeland. Doris Jo (Musser) Brinton, 99, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully Saturday, January 30, 2021 at home.

She was born October 18, 1921 near Starfield, Missouri to Rollie, Sr., and Clara Belle (Carter) Musser.

Doris married the love of her life, William C. Brinton, on June 5, 1970; he preceded her in death on May 21, 1999.

She attended Mount Zion School in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1940. Doris worked for Mead Products for 30 years before retiring in 1983.

Doris was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She was very talented, she could do anything such as make ceramics, painting pictures, sewing, and making quilts. Doris loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved with every ounce of her heart and always made sure you knew that you were loved.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kay, Clay, Bill, Charles, Rollie, Jr., Allen, Darrell; sisters, Anna Mae Summerfield, Nettie Bottorff, Jean Musser, Joanne Gilleland; stepdaughter, Debbie Brinton and granddaughter, Rebecca Brinton.

Jacqueline Barnett Junday, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021.

She was born January 12, 1936 in Stewartsville, Missouri to Norman G. and Dorothy V. (Jackson) Barnett.

Jacqueline grew up in Stewartsville and graduated from Stewartsville High School.

She worked at Sun Garment in St. Joseph as a seamstress. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona, she worked at Motorola as a machinist, then at Maximet, where she made aircraft parts. She later worked doing van conversions and making draperies, also in Phoenix.

Jacqueline loved to bowl and play cards and was a wonderful cook and mother. She loved spending time with her family. She was of the Catholic faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Terry Bullock; and two brothers, Norman and Larry Barnett.

Survivors include her children, Susan Hendrix, Michael Bullock (Barb), and Teri Jundy Burkhardt (Richard); grandchildren, Lacey CDeBaca, Victoria Bleich and Alena Lewis (Daniel); great-grandchildren, Jackson and Isabela CDeBaca; siblings, Tom Barnett (Sharon), Glenda Barnett McKinstry, Diana DenBeste (David), Debbie Dorsel (Frank), and Pam Braffett; sister-in-law, Shirley Barnett; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Jacqueline Barnett Jundy  1936 - 2021

Billy L. Catron, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, returned to his heavenly home, Friday, January 29, 2021. 

He was born to Homer and Nancy (Rutan) Catron in Clarksdale, Missouri on September 12, 1937. They precede him in death. Billy was one of eleven children. Preceding him in death are brothers, Charles, James, John, Leroy and Lloyd, sisters, Shirley Brown, Bonnie Miller, and Doris Ann Kerns. Surviving siblings are sister, Martha Marriott and brother, Roger Catron.

Billy graduated from Easton, MO High School in 1956 where he excelled in basketball and football while participating in music and drama. He attended St. Joseph Junior College on a basketball scholarship. Later in life, he played semi-pro baseball and AAA Fastpitch softball.

Billy received Christ as his Lord and Savior when he was 12 years old. His relationship with God led every aspect of his life. He was a lifelong member of McCarthy Baptist Church where he held numerous leadership positions.

Billy married Barbara Ellen Hazzard on March 27, 1959. Our family and friends will miss the pride he had and absolute adoration of being her husband. She completed him. Following God’s example, he was her protector, provider and was ever faithful. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage before her death in 2015.

We will miss his example of God’s unquestionable love and devotion to his family. He loved them so much. His children are, Laura (Glen) Brown, Deborah Catron-Flugrad, Pamela (Seth) Harnack, Connie Catron and Mark (Ethel) Catron. He was the best Pawpaw and Great Pawpaw to seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

We will miss his work ethic, another Godly trait. He was proud to be a Roadway truckdriver - “The Big R” as he called it and being a member of the Teamsters Union.

We will miss his love of music, especially barbershop and gospel. He sang in quartets throughout his life beginning in high school. He was a member of the Pony Expressmen Barbershop Chorus over 20 years. He and Barbara were chaperones of The New Generation Singers for over a decade,

We will miss his life-long interest in sports. He was an avid fan of football, baseball, and basketball, namely the KC Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, KC Chiefs, and the University of Missouri.

We will miss how much he enjoyed being with people, hearing and telling funny stories and just being silly.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Edmundson (Brad), Debra Beaver; sons, John Whitehill (LuAnn), Michael Lima (Barbara), Charles Lima; three step-daughters; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother Jim Lima (Kim) ; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Mary Lima, son Kevin Lima, sister Rose Marie Ridens, and a great-granddaughter Breanna Colbert.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, enjoyed bowling, played fast pitch softball and coached Little League Baseball.

Lesia Tatro, 56, of St. Joseph, died January 29,. 2021.&nbsp; Lesia was born January 5, 1965, in Norfolk, VA, to Andrew and Judith (Glunt) Phillips.

She had worked as a med tech and nurse's aide in various nursing homes in the area.&nbsp;

Leisia married John Tatro on October 16, 1997 in St. Joseph and he survives.&nbsp; Also surviving are her children, Aleisha Chandler, Anthony Chandler, Dallas Phillips; several grandchildren; a brother Danny Phillips; a sister Mickey Taylor; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lesia was an artist and enjoyed crocheting.&nbsp; She had donated several hats to the prenatal unit and local hospitals.&nbsp; She enjoyed her grandkids, family was always first in her life and she was a very loving person.&nbsp; She will be missed by all.

Lesia Tatro  1965 - 2021

Zane Paul Meis was born in Plainville, KS on September 23, 1957, to Gilbert and Theresa Meis.&nbsp; As the third of nine children, Zane enjoyed family camping and fishing trips taken from their home in Oakley, KS.&nbsp; Zane learned to hunt small game from a young age.&nbsp; It was in high school, working for a local lumber yard, that his love of crafting furniture and woodworking was born.&nbsp; His growing interest in history, government, and the military motivated him to enlist in the United States Navy his senior year of high school.

It was after graduation and enlistment that Zane met his beloved wife, Anna.&nbsp; The two were married on October 9, 1976, then moved to north Chicago where he trained to become Gunner Mate at Great Lakes Naval Training Center.&nbsp; Stationed at Norfolk, VA, Zane was assigned to the USS Boulder, participating in the rescue of Cuban refugees trying to escape to the United States via boats, rafts, and innertubes.&nbsp; Zane would later be reassigned to the USS Iwo Jima that operated off the coasts of Italy, Spain, and France. &nbsp; After four years of service, Zane was honorably discharged in July 1980 at the rank of Gunner's Mate Second Class.
