Bernardo Serpa, 65, of St Joseph, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

He was born May 20, 1955 in Cuba, son of Maria Villanueva and Julio Canstantino Serpa. He worked at Triumph Foods. 

Bernardo was preceded in death by his father, Julio Canstantino Serpa, and mother, Maria Villanueva. 

He is survived by wife, Maritza Drake of St. Joseph, and other family and friends. 

Mr. Serpa has been cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Gary Culbertson, 64, of Elwood, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.&nbsp;

Gary was born on September 28, 1956 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Harold and Betty (Belcher) Caldwell.&nbsp;

He worked for Prime Tanning, Hurricane cleanups and Triumph Foods.&nbsp;

Gary married Kim Monical on October 22, 2016 at the Wathena Community Building. She survives of the home.&nbsp;

Darcey Guthmiller, 44, St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020.

She was born February 22, 1976, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Thomas Michael and Vesta Vern (Kitzan) McLaughlin. Darcey married Traves Guthmiller on July 25, 1998. He survives of the home. She was a stay-at-home mom, being the best mom she could be. She also was a large support system to those around her. Darcey was very active in atypical HUS support groups. She enjoyed cooking and shopping, but most of all her family was everything to her. She loved being a Nana. In her free time, she enjoyed watching KU basketball and the Green Bay Packers. She also was a very dedicated Democrat.

Darcey was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Survivors include husband; daughters, Madison Anderson and Kaylee Guthmiller; grandchildren, Madden and Olivia Anderson; brothers, Casey and Terry McLaughlin; numerous extended family members and friends.

Cody was born on July 22, 1990 in Atchison. He graduated from Atchison High School and had worked in construction for his family’s business. However, Cody’s passion was working for himself as a mechanic, building and repairing cars. Cody loved to ride his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, being outdoors, going four-wheeling with his uncles and he especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Cody is survived by his daughter, Addison Kley of Atchison; his mother, Kristi McCray of Lancaster; his aunts, Peggy Roberts, Rondia Moss and Clowie Kley; his uncles, Roger ‘Kelly’ Kley, Jr, Shannon Kley and Hanson Kley, and numerous cousins and friends. Ronald Winn Meng, 83, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020 at his home in St. Joseph. 

He was born December 25, 1936 in St. Joseph, son of Irene and Leo Meng. He graduated from Benton High School, class of 1955. He married Juanita "Nita" Griffin on June 16, 1957 in St. Joseph. He served in the Air National Guard. Ron and Nita owned and operated Bon Ton Dry Cleaners for 30 years. His hobbies included fly fishing and tying flies, making trips to Bennett Springs, he loved his dogs, hunting, and  he was an avid sports fan, especially the KC Chiefs and KC Royals. Ron loved spending time with his children and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Wathena Masonic Lodge Lodge #64 AF &amp; AM, 32nd degree Mason, and had earned his 50 year pin. He also was a past member of South Side St. Joseph Rotary Club, where he served as past president and past 6040 District Governor, a member of the Barber Shop Chorus-The Pony Expressman, The Barbershop Quartet-Mid Continentals, and Wyatt Park Christian Church. 

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, step mothers, Elizabeth Meng, and Hattie Meng, brothers, Richard Meng, Wayne Meng, and John Meng. 

Survivors include: wife, Juanita Meng of the home, daughter, Cheri (Stanley) Dedman of Plattsburg, MO, sons, David Meng of Topeka, KS and Ricky A. Meng of St Joseph, sister, Evelyn (Ed) Sharp of Flagstaff, AZ, 1/2 sister, Dorthea (Dennis) Centers, daughter-in-law, Dianna Meng, sisters-in-law, Nancy Meng and Inez Meng, 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Funeral Service with Military Honors will be at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Rupp Funeral Home, Chaplain Cheri Dedman officiating. Donald Lee Furr, 81, St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at his home surrounded by his wife and family.

Don was born October 28, 1938, in St. Joe, the only child of Donald Benjamin and Opal Imogene (Cooper) Furr. He was a 1956 graduate of Benton High School. Don worked at Anchor Serum prior to a career serving his country. On April 2, 1956, at the age of 17, Don enlisted in the Missouri Air National Guard 139th Airlift Wing, in St. Joseph. Don married Dixie Fetty Soltys on April 22, 1978. He was activated to Desert Storm from December 1990 to June 1991, where he served as Material Management Supervisor. After proudly serving our country, he retired with 35 years of service as a SMSGT. After retirement, Don and Dixie moved to Grove, Oklahoma, to fulfill his dream of living at Grand Lake. Don was the remaining survivor of a fishing group who enjoyed years of annual trips to Grand Lake on Columbus Day weekend. They cherished their 10 years of lake life, returning to St. Joe in 2003. Winters were spent in Mission, Texas, where some great friendships were formed.

Don is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dixie, who cared for him through his Alzheimer’s. Additional survivors are their children, Darrell (Shanda) Furr, Joi (Gary) Davies, Chad (Heather) Furr, Shelly Grooms and Tracy Clark; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Lee Grooms.

Luella Mae Campbell, 89, of St. Joseph, went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2020.

Luella was born October 22, 1930, to Dannie Marvin Herd and Oval Lee (McCall) Herd. She was a lifelong member of the West Valley Church of God. She never failed to tell others about Jesus. After graduating from Benton High School, she worked at Kresge 5 and 10 making $25 a week. Luella was happily married to Dincel O. Campbell (DOC) for 66 years. She always said she met her million dollar baby at the 5 and 10 cent store. He walked in wearing his military uniform, and they married two weeks later on September 9, 1951. She loved being a homemaker, raising her children, babysitting others, and being an Avon lady. Doc preceded her in death Oct. 5, 2017.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by both her parents and lifetime friend, Beverly Chastain.

She graduated from Valley Heights high School Blue Rapids KS., and worked at Mead Products until its closing, Affiliated Foods, Diversicare, Cardinal Country Donuts, and most recently at Fresh Fair. Shirley Jean Kretzschmar 80, of Savannah, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at her home. 

She was born February 13, 1940 in Pearson, OK, daughter of the late Loya and Emmett Nelson. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1958 and married Donald on November 17, 1967. She worked at H.D. Lee until it closed, American Family Insurance, United Missouri Bank, and Lawson Quick Shop in Stewartsville. She enjoyed working in the yard, flower gardening, watching her grandchildren sporting events, crossword puzzles and soduko, traveling, but most especially spending time with her family. Shirley was the former Mayor of Clarksdale Missouri and a member of the Church of Brethren, St. Joseph, MO then the Clarksdale Christian Church. 

Shirley was preceded in death by husband, Donald, her parents, brothers, Robert and Jim Nelson, sister, Cora Nelson.

She was born May 19, 1935, in Maitland, Missouri, to Cleo and Helen (Derr) Bender.

Joyce married Ernest E. Officer, February 24, 1957. Ernest passed on September 29, 1978. She married Bernard Myer June 17,1995 and he passed on September 2, 2017.

She attended New Point school in New Point, MO until the district consolidated with Oregon. Joyce graduated from Oregon High School in 1953. She attended one year at Northwest Missouri and Platte College. Joyce retired from the Savannah R-3 School District in 1995. She was a member at First Christian Church of Savannah, MO. Joyce had a beautiful singing voice and loved to play and watch sports. Joyce attended all of her grandchildren’s activities.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Phyllis Bender Watson Edwards.

Survivors include: daughter, Lorna (Kirk) Lawrence of Tucson, AZ; son, Lyle (Shelly) Officer of Rosendale, MO; six grandchildren, Ann (Ryan) Nielsen, Claire Lawrence, Zachary (Kylie) Officer, Mitchell (Madesen) Officer, Kaylee and Alaina Officer; one great-grandson, Connor Nielsen.

He was born January 17, 1937 to Clarence and Buelah (Coffman) Hutchison in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Larry married Donita Waltemath July 3, 1974. He was an insurance salesman and during his career he took the opportunity to travel internationally teaching training seminars. Larry enjoyed drinking scotch, socializing, and having a good time. Larry was a member of the Moila Shriners, Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jamie Shelby; grandson, Jacob “JJ” Stephenson; son-in-law, Tom Lewis; and two brothers.

Martin, 93, Stanberry, Missouri, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020.

Martin was born on March 14, 1927 to Aloysius J. and Anna (Durbin) Wiederholt, in Clyde, Missouri. He met Janice Grooms (Walsh) at the Frog Hop in St. Joseph, Missouri. They were married on July 30, 1952. Martin joined the Army in July 1945, he was honorably discharged on November 30, 1946. Martin was fortunate to be able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

He was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Stanberry, Missouri, for many years. Later he moved to Maryville, Missouri, and became a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Martin was a member of the Knights of Columbus and The American Legion. Martin owned and operated Wiederholt Apco Service Station from 1964 until 1990 when he sold the station and all of its contents. Later, he earned his CDL license and delivered gas around Stanberry, Missouri. He really enjoyed mowing his lawn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice; son T. David Walsh, and sister Emerita Simmerman.

Dorothy Lee Frogge 88, was Born April 27, 1932 St Joseph Mo, passed away on October 14, 2020 at Carriage Square Nursing Home after a stroke, due to a heart defect she had for many years. 

Preceded her in death are her parents: Melvin L. &amp; Elsie L. (Barton) Frogge, Maternal grandparents, Sterling Forrest &amp; Zula May (Roberts) Barton, and Paternal grandparents, James B. &amp; Matilda E. (Brosi) Frogge. She out lived 5 husbands, included are: Fredrick L. Beach, Joseph S. Robles, Frederick B. Frink, and Dana C. Mills. 

Also preceding her in Death was her son, Donald F. Beach. She was very proud of his service in the USMC. 

Survivors included: her sister, Marilyn Lewis, brother, Dennis Frogge of California, Children: Nancy L. Pulliam (John), Tammie D. Morris (Brenden), David J. Robles (Shari) all of California, Gail A. Schinze (Kevin), Deborah E. Teed (David), and Diana L. Phillips all of Missouri. Many Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Nieces and Nephews. 

Dorothy loved to read, and crafts of all kinds, she enjoyed owning her ceramic business. Private Family Services, and Inurmnent at Blakley Cemetery, Easton MO.&nbsp;

Leo R. Oxford, 95, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at a healthcare facility in St. Joseph.

Leo was born on April 9, 1925, in rural Benton County, Arkansas to the late George and Ila Oxford.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, and the continued his service after the war by becoming a member of the Missouri Air National Guard retiring in 1987.

Leo married Betty Jean Scofield&nbsp; on August 29, 1945 in Wathena, Kansas. She survives him of the home.

He began his working career in the meat packing industry and then became a caterer in his later working years&nbsp;

Mr. Oxford was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and their son; Richard Oxford.

In addition to his wife of 75 years, Leo is survived by his son; Greg Oxford of Stockton, Mo, and daughter; Joyce Oxford, of Lee's Summit, Mo along with grandchildren, nieces and nephews.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, October 15th at Memorial Park Cemetery.

The graveside service will be officiated by Rev. Jim Barnett and the Military Honors will be rendered by the U. S. Navy and the American Legion Post 287 Honor Guard.&nbsp;

Arrangements are under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.

Dennis Wayne Taylor, 81, Iowa Point, KS native, passed away early Monday, October 12, 2020.

Dennis was born in Iowa Point, on November 16th, 1938, to the late Floyd and Hazel Randall Taylor.&nbsp; He was also preceded in death by three brothers:&nbsp; William, Victor, and Ronald, and a step sister Linda Butrick.

He was married to Kathleen Bassford Taylor for sixty two years.&nbsp; They were blessed with three children:&nbsp; Wendy Taylor Veech, Michael Taylor, Colleen Taylor Nolting, three grandchildren:&nbsp; Westly Nolting, Ronald Nolting, and Cristal Veech; three great-grandchildren:&nbsp; William Veech, Anthony Veech, and David Nolting; brother Douglas Taylor of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dennis worked as an industrial electrician for the Denver &amp; Rio Grand, and later the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring the Rohr Corporation after over 20 years of service.

They retired to Kansas near the White Cloud area where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and to rejoin the extensive Taylor clan of White Cloud and Highland.

Memorial Graveside services are planned for 1 p.m. Thursday, October 15, at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cemetery upkeep fund which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th&nbsp;St., Hiawatha 66434.

William Knapp, 94, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020.

He was born April 4, 1926 to Harold and Marie (Frans) Knapp. William married Katherine “Katie” Reed, September 14, 1946. He was a manager at Carnations-Country-Store for twenty-eight years and after retirement he worked for the Department of Agriculture for eight-years. William was an avid walker, walking three miles a day with his walking buddies. He loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events; he was a Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals fan. William was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Moila Shriners, Sertoma Club and Senior Legends Golf Club, Fairview golf course where he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2013

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include Wife of 74 years, Katie; daughters, Karen Brasses (Ward), Connie Cupryk (Dan); Grandchildren, Danielle Novascone (Dan), Scott Cupryk, Ryan Brasses; great-grandchildren, William and Ada Novascone, Sadie Brasses.

Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held with Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. William “Bill” Knapp  1926 - 2020

Richard Burge, 79, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2020.

He was born April 19, 1941 to Stanford and Myrtle Burge. Richard married Linda Bish March 1, 1963. She survives of the home. He was a printer at the News-press for many years. Richard enjoyed traveling with family, capturing moments with his camera, staying active and always helping others. He was an adamant Los Angeles Dodgers fan. Richard was a member of Patee Park Baptist Church where he did everything except preach a sermon. He was a wonderful man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson Cyler Matthews and two sisters.

Survivors include Daughter, Kelley Matthews; Grandchildren, Drew Matthews Devin Matthews (Nicole), Tyler Fortune (Sara), Traci Grove (Kyle); ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, extended family and friends.

Carol Compton, 68 a St. Joseph resident, passed away Sunday October 11, 2020 at her home. 

Carol married Carl Compton August 27, 1970. She was a graduate of Lafayette high school in 1970. Carol was a well accomplished realtor for over 33 years. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. Carol had two sons and two grandchildren she loved dearly. 

She is preceded in death by her mother Nellie Maddox. 

At her request, no services will be held.

Regina Mae Dombrowski, 88, of St. Joseph, died October 12, 2020.&nbsp; Regina was born May 2, 1932, in St. Joseph, to Joseph and Rose (Carol) Dombrowski.

She had worked at Barnard Uniforms as a salesperson and book keeper.

Survivors include a brother Ronald Dombrowski; two nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Richard.

Miss Dombrowski has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.&nbsp; There will be no services at this time.

Regina Dombrowski  1932 - 2020

Virgil "Doc" Williams, 83, Savannah, Missouri; passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at Shady Lawn with his family by his side.

Doc was born on April 14, 1937 in Fillmore, Missouri to the late Reed Earl and Martha Opal (Hall) Williams.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Fillmore High School.

Mr. Williams worked in construction most of his life as a heavy equipment operator.&nbsp; After his retirement he worked for the Andrew Country Road and Bridge.

Doc was a member of the First Baptist Church.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Local #101, and taught in their apprenticeship program.&nbsp; He enjoyed music and playing guitar, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, working on the farm and above all spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Doc was married to Betty L. Bisig on July 25, 1954 and recently celebrated sixty-six years of marriage.&nbsp; She survives him of the home.

Additional survivors include children, Carey Williams (Tammy), Kim Bauman (Randy), Jeff Williams (Judy); daughter-in-law, Linda Williams; grandchildren, Kae Lewis (Chad), Cara Damgar (Jamie), Tawni Bross (Dave), Megan House (Johnny), Dustin Bauman (Emily); twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his son, Ricky Williams and brother, Roger Williams.

Services 11:30 AM Friday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

She was born on July 13, 1928 to Hewett and Anna (Sommer) McCleave.&nbsp; She graduated from Iowa State University.&nbsp; She worked at Random House in New York and taught in Australia for twenty years.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Frances, Evelyn and Joanne and brothers Earl, Joseph, James, George and John, nephew Eddie Clymens and nieces Melanie McCleave, Mary Lou and Kelly McCleave.

Survivors: Two sisters-in-law, Ethlyn and Barbara McCleave, one nephew Randy McCleave, five nieces, Annasue Wilson, Tammy Milbourn, Bambi Evans, Kathleen Lee and Michele Thomas, cousins and friends.
