Roy D. Earls, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021.

He was born February 21, 1943 in Junction City, Kansas to Roy and Betty (Lang) Earls.

Roy proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. He then worked as a service technician at IBM for 30 years.

He enjoyed spending time on his hobby farm, leatherworking, and photography. He also was known for his dry sense of humor.

Roy was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Survivors include sons, Bryan Keith Earls, David Jon Earls (Kathleen); sisters, Mary LouAnn Cummins (Curt), Barbara Jean Watkins (Jeff).

Betty Bryan Wenger, Hiawatha, formerly of Powhattan, was born November 24, 1926, to Edgar and Ella Collins Bryan near White Cloud.

Betty passed away a day after her 95th&nbsp;birthday, November 25, 2021 at Amberwell Hiawatha.

She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1944 and had attended Kansas State University and taught at a rural school near Powhattan where she met Loyd V. Wenger.&nbsp; They were married March 4, 1945 and settled on the family farm.&nbsp; Loyd died March 9, 1984.&nbsp; She married Chuck Ludwig in February, 1988.&nbsp; He died August 2004.

She is survived by sons Dennis (Jackie) Wenger and Dean Wenger of Powhattan, daughter Jane (Lee) Osburn of Lawrence, son–in-law Don Ehrlich of Emporia.&nbsp; Also surviving are grandchildren Dedra (Justin) Stuteman, Amy (Scott) Corcoran, Jered (Michael) Solace, Denise (Greg) O’Bryan, Dusty Wenger, Erin (Jared) Schreiner, Jill (Jason) Selland and Jill Blake; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Homer, Woodrow, Robert, Bill, and Clyde Bryan, and two sisters Fern Pierson and Alyce Ragan, and her daughter Judy Ehrlich, daughter-in-law Brenda Wenger, and step-grandson Todd Widman.

A Celebration of Betty’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, at the United Methodist Church of Powhattan, with Shane Spangler and Pastor Nicholas Marsh officiating.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home until 6 p.m. Monday.&nbsp; The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Tuesday at the Church.

Eleanor Ruth Langemach passed away at Country Squire Retirement Residence in St. Joseph on November 24, 2021. 

She was born on June 19, 1926 in Hinsdale, Illinois and was baptized on December 25, 1927 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Berwyn, Illinois. Her adoption by Walter Alva and Esther Ruth (Dillon) Peckenpaugh was finalized on December 27, 1927. They lived in Berwyn until Walter and Ruth separated and Eleanor moved with her mother to St. Joseph at the age of six. Eleanor recalled the trials of growing up during the depression. She remembered having scarlet fever, whooping cough and the old-fashioned measles.

Eleanor attended Humboldt, Todd and Pershing elementary schools and Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, graduating in 1944. Her classmates knew her as “Peck”. High school yearbooks show her to have been involved in a wide variety of clubs and activities, mostly centered around art and music. Eleanor was inducted into the Lampion Honor Society during her senior year and was recognized as one of the six highest ranking seniors that year, being named as class valedictorian. She was Editor in Chief of “The Oak” yearbook during her senior year and was described as “one of the most versatile students ever to attend Lafayette, endearing herself to all by her willingness to accept any responsibility”. Eleanor made many lifelong friends during high school. As the years passed, Eleanor always took an eager and active part in planning class reunions.&nbsp;

Upon graduation, Eleanor expressed an interest in going to college at a time when finances were scarce. She once told this to a friend who quickly responded, “You talk like a crazy woman. You can’t afford college.” And Eleanor quickly responded, “I’m going!” Through the help of scholarships, Eleanor attended the St. Joseph Junior College (now Missouri Western State University). During her summers, she worked at Wonder Bread to help pay for her college expenses. While at Junior College, Eleanor was editor of The Griffon News and secretary of Phi Theta Kappa, a national scholastic fraternity for junior colleges. She was pleased to receive the Junior College Service Award given to a student intending to continue his or her education. Eleanor spent the next two years of college at the University of Missouri in Columbia and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism.

On November 25, 1948, she married Vernon Rollin Langemach and was privileged to enjoy 51 years of marriage before Vernon’s death in 2000. Eleanor is survived by her children, Susan (Wayne) Cole and Paul (Nancy) Langemach, grandchildren Scott (Sephra) Brown, Brian (Tishia) Brown, Eric (Ekta) Langemach, Kristin (Nathan) Peterson, Mark (Maddy) Langemach, and Bailey Cole. She is also survived by great grandchildren Gabe Brown, Seth Brown, Zach Brown, Riley Brown and Sage Langemach along with sister-in-law Darline Langemach.

Eleanor first secured an advertising job in Kansas City but ended up with appendicitis and had to cancel her job. She saw that as an act of fate that allowed her to stay in St. Joseph where she would end up marrying Vernon. Her professional employment included being a layout and copy writer in the advertising department of the St. Joseph News Press (1948-1953) and serving as advertising manager for Hirsch’s department store (1953). After her children were grown, Eleanor worked as Christian Education Director at Francis Street First United Methodist Church for 13 years, retiring in 1991.

At age 12, Eleanor was confirmed into membership of the Francis Street Methodist Church and remained a member there for the rest of her life. Through the years, she served there as a board member of the church. She loved helping with landscaping around the church building. Elsewhere, she was Building Chair and Finance Chair of the former Wesley Foundation campus ministry at MWSU, being one of the incorporators of the Foundation in 1989 and playing an integral part in the building of their new campus ministry home.

In 2008, Eleanor traveled to the Holy Land in a group led by Dr. Jimmy Albright. While there, she rededicated her baptism in the Jordan River. In later years, she often accompanied her family to Sunday services at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church and the church welcomed her graciously and with love.

In addition to caring for her family, much of Eleanor’s life was spent doing volunteer work with a focus on education and projects that benefit children and youth. As a young mother, Eleanor was active in the YWCA Young Matrons program and pre-school activities. She frequently helped out at school as a room mother or even as a chaperone for an 8th grade field trip to Dallas-Fort Worth by train. And she somehow made time to serve as a Cub Scout assistant den leader. Her children remember her as PTA president of Pershing Elementary School which automatically placed her on the St. Joseph PTA Council as a representative from Pershing.

When her children were grown, Eleanor’s energies expanded to the state level. She was state president of the Missouri PTA (1975-1977). She served on the National Board of Directors (1975-1981) and as chairperson of the National PTA Cultural Arts Reflection Project (1980-1981). In 1978, she was one of 12 representatives of the U.S. Friendship Commission selected to participate in an Educational Seminar held in Japan. Also in 1978, she was honored to be named Lay Educator of the Year by the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. In 2007, she received the Dr. Dan L. Colgan National PTA Foundation Award, a lifetime PTA leadership award. Eleanor has been honored as an honorary life member of the Missouri PTA, the Nebraska PTA and the National PTA.

Eleanor’s love of gardening was always evident via a simple walk through her back yard. It was a showplace to behold. Her children remember her love of flowers, her longtime membership in the Bu-An-Co Gardeners and countless hours of preparation for flower shows. She was a past president of that club and also served as parliamentarian. In the role of Habitat for Humanity Chairman for the Bu-An-Co Garden Club, she helped coordinate landscaping plantings for several Habitat Homes in St. Joseph. Eleanor served as Director of the Northwest District Council of Judges and treasurer of the Northwest District. As state president, Eleanor was quoted as saying “Cherish the memories of yesterday, savor the beauty of today, but nurture the promise of tomorrow!”

She was a past state president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri (1981-1983) and was honored as a life member. She served on the state executive committee as parliamentarian and was a member of the advisory council. In 1984, she became a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge and enjoyed judging in state and county fairs and garden club flower shows. Continuing education included attending state Symposiums every three years. In 2019, she was granted the status and title of Master Judge Emeritus.

Eleanor served on the St. Joseph Public Library Board of Directors from October, 1981 to November, 1988. She was a member of Chapter FP of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and greatly appreciated the many cards and notes from her sisters during these past few years.

In 2016, Eleanor was honored to be recognized as one of two recipients of the YWCA Women of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award. In a newspaper article detailing the award, long-time friend Sharon Kosek was quoted as saying “She always just was so gracious, and still is, in everything she does. She treats everyone like they’re a queen or a prince.”

While there never seemed to be enough spare time, Eleanor still enjoyed playing the piano, singing in the church choir and she had her own kiln for completion of exquisite ceramics. She loved doing needlework and had made a couple of cross stitch quilts. Her favorite song on the piano was “Living for Jesus” which she played by memory and the Bible verse she quoted almost daily was from Psalm 118:24 “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Preceding her in death are her husband and her adoptive parents, Ruth Matthews and Walter Peckenpaugh.

The family would like to thank the staff at Country Squire and the Freudenthal Home Health and Hospice teams for their many kindnesses extended to both Eleanor and her dog Cocoa. We appreciate the gentleness in which Eleanor was allowed to finally travel home into God’s waiting arms.

Leona Lilly Ann Ebling 84, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 26, 2021 at her home. 

She was born September 8, 1937 in Fillmore, MO, daughter of the late Leona and Johnnie Pettijohn. She graduated from Missouri Western State College. She worked at health care industry as a caregiver, and also worked at C.A.S.A. Leona was a member of Souls Harbor Pentecostal Church. Leona was very talented, she was an author of 2 novels, one on her life, the other a love story, she also wrote poetry, songs, and played the piano at Church. She will be sadly missed by her family and church family. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Ebling Sr., granddaughter, Amanda Snethen Arnold, great granddaughter, Alia, seven brothers, Charles, James, Lester, Clyde, Ralph, John P, and Forrest, two sisters, Dolly Shaw, and Mary Ann Decker, and former daughter in law, Autumn Westcott.

Elizabeth Ann Van Sickle 99, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 26, 2021 in Parkville, MO. 

She was born November 16, 1922 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Mayme (Kirschner) and Fred Conrad. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1941 and was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting and making afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Evolution United Methodist church, a member of the crafters group at church, as well as TOPS, and the Entre Nous club. 

Elizabeth was preceded in death by parents, husband, Donald Earl Van Sickle Sr., son, Donald Van Sickle Jr., son-in-law Jerry Mollus and two grandchildren Laurie Van Sickle and Karissa Mollus.

He worked at MGP in Atchison, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Roy’s career with MGP Ingredients spanned 47 years starting on August 14, 1974.&nbsp;&nbsp;He spent his entire career in the distillery with the majority of the time in the Feed and Grain area.&nbsp;&nbsp;Roy was the most senior operator in the Plant (this is a big deal in the union).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jeff was born July 29, 1963 to William and Juanita Burke Allen.&nbsp; He graduated from Papillion High School in Omaha Nebraska.&nbsp; Jeff most recently worked at Baker’s Floral in Omaha, Nebraska.&nbsp; He loved making floral arrangements and gardening.&nbsp; He also had a love for cooking, especially Italian cuisine.

Jeff was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Omaha, NE.

Jeff is survived by his 4 siblings, William Allen and wife Ann of Omaha, NE, Peggy and husband Keary Strube of Powhattan, KS, Sherry and husband Cliff Anderson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Tammy and husband Ed Karnik of Omaha, NE.&nbsp; He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Doris Leeson, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at home surrounded by her husband and children.

She was born September 25, 1933 in St. Joseph to Martin and Luanna (Ashton) Carpenter. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1950, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.

Doris married Marvin Lloyd Leeson on November 27, 1951. They shared 70 years together. He survives of the home.

She was very involved in PTA while her children were in school and was a “block mother” to all neighborhood children.

Devoted to her husband and family, Doris was a beautiful, conscientious woman who knew no end to her duties and always put others first. She also was a very talented woman who played piano and was quite skilled in crafts and art. She loved to draw.

She was very rooted in her faith and was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Jack, David and Martin Carpenter.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin; children, Cathie Marshall, Sandra Bibb (Henry), Michael Leeson (Carol), and Cheryl Wormington; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Robert Carpenter (Charlotte); numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Brian Miller in 2015, her parents and siblings, Mary Ellis, Robert Groce, and Carol Buehler.

She married Roger Guier on April 15, 1978. He survives of the home. Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

Paula was known to be on the lookout for treasures in unusual places. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Wayne was an Eagle Scout, served as a Boy Scout Adult Leader, was a Sachem in the Tribe of Mico-Say, where he also served as dance director and chaplain for many of the scout camps in the summer. He was a member of the Who’s Who from college, played alto sax for the Kansas University Marching Band while in KU, and in the Alumni Band. Wayne was also a member of the Order of the Arrow, and had attended Philmont Scout Ranch, and Boundary Waters scout camps. Wayne was known for his generous and kind spirit, devoted to youth ministries’. Survivors include two brothers, Warren (Joan) Willmeth, Rolling Meadows, IL, and Willie (Patty) Willmeth, Leavenworth, KS, four nieces, two nephews, four great nieces and two great nephews. Robert Lee Russell II, 67, of Amazonia, Missouri, passed away Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

He was born January 2, 1954 in St. Joseph, son of Meredith and Robert Russell. He graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1972. Bob married Jelsena "Joe" Pierce on July 29, 1972. In 2011, Bob retired after 32 years with the St. Joseph Fire Department as a Mechanic. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, attending auctions and garage sales. 

Bob was preceded in death by wife, Jelsena "Joe" Russell in 2013, his parents, brother, Wes Russell and sister in law, Cindy Russell.

Bob was a veteran of the USAF, a Chemical Engineering graduate of the University of Kansas. He was employed in engineering and plant management for Monsanto and Great Lakes Chemical for a career spanning 34 years and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Olathe KS.

He enjoyed RV travel in North America, wintering in Mesa, AZ for over 20 years, landscape photography, electronics and ham radio.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle &amp; Theodosia Flint, and his wife’s parents, Ivan &amp; Mary Hickman, both of St. Joseph.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Patricia Flint (Olathe, KS); four children, Jay &amp; Colleen Flint (Richmond, TX), Paula &amp; David Kornfeld (Lenexa, KS), John &amp; Lisa Flint (St. Louis, MO), and Sara Flint (Olathe, KS); fourteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances Kay Schraufek-Forshee, 83, Centralia, Missouri, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully to join her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 20, 2021.

On November 19, 1931 she was born to Herbert and Frances (Chapel) Lang in Kahoka, Missouri.

Frances married John Wendell Schraufek on June 17, 1962. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage. He precedes her in death. She married James Forshee in March of 2014. He survives of the home.

She was a Christian previously attending Word of Life Church then bible study in Severance, Kansas.

Frances enjoyed shopping, decorating her home and working in the yard. She liked to play catch with her grandchildren and spend time with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; and brother, Herb Lang.

Survivors include her husband and his children, Scott, Darren, Brenda and Shuana Forshee; daughters, Leslie Schraufek and Wende Gonyea; grandchildren, Allyson Bree, Ryen, Caelyn, Rhegan, Gavin; great-grandchildren, Landon and Cleo; sister, Charlotte; brother-in-law, Ed Schraufek (Gloria); niece, Deanna Schraufek; nephew, Matt Schraufek; great nieces, Teaghen, Tangey and Gracie.

Charles Edward Malita, 90, of St. Joseph, died November 21, 2021, in St. Joseph, Missouri.&nbsp; Charlie was born November 27, 1930, in St. Joseph to Edward and Eleanor (Swedo) Malita.&nbsp;

He attended Christian Brothers High School and then graduated from Benton High School.&nbsp;

Charlie honorably served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, 40th Division, 160th Infantry Regiment, I Company. &nbsp;&nbsp;He received two Bronze Service Stars,the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He graduated from the Toledo School of Meatcutters. Charlie was a union meatcutter for his entire career.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 571.

Charlie married JoAnn Karl on June 23, 1956, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Easton, MO, and she survives of the home.&nbsp; Also surviving are children Craig (Stephanie) Malita of St. Joseph, MO; Paul (Tomme) Malita of Kansas City, MO; Ann (Jeff) Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; Erica (Robert) Johnson of Platte City, MO; Chad (Jeanette) Malita of Easton, MO; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He loved fishing and watching his grandchildren in sports and school performances.&nbsp; He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football, Chiefs football, and Royals baseball.&nbsp; He volunteered his time to many charitable organizations.

Charlie was a devoted husband and father, and a mentor not only to his children, but to many others as well.

Charles Edward Malita  1930 - 2021

Curtis Edward Gamble, of Hiawatha, passed away November 18, 2021 at the age of 64; he was surrounded by his wife and children after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.

Curtis was born March 16, 1957, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Rowena Elizabeth (Dixon) Gamble and Edgar Curtis Gamble.&nbsp; He attended Hiawatha schools, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track, setting multiple records that still stand today.&nbsp; After graduating from Hiawatha High school in 1975, Curtis attended Highland Community College before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Social Science from Kansas State University in 1982.

After college, Curtis joined the U.S. Navy, where he reached the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.&nbsp; He served aboard the frigate&nbsp;U.S.S. Bagley,&nbsp;working as both an administrative assistant and Chief Petty Officer, and contributed to Over-the-Horizon Targeting and cruise missile employment before being honorably discharged in 1988.

In a true example of love-at-first-sight, Curtis met Jeanne Marie (Henry) Gamble on a blind date in September 1986.&nbsp; A few short months later, the two were married on April 25, 1987.&nbsp; Their love is manifested by their three children:&nbsp; Christi, Kathryn, and Jonathan.

Curtis worked tirelessly at whatever he set out to do.&nbsp; He served 21 years in law enforcement as a Probation Officer in Brown and Doniphan Counties and as a Corrections Counselor for the California Department of Corrections &amp; Rehabilitation. &nbsp;&nbsp;He also followed his father’s footsteps and created his own business, starting Gamble’s Lawn Care &amp; Spraying Service.&nbsp; In its decades–plus years of operation, it flourished into one of the largest and most renowned black-owned business in northeast Kansas.&nbsp; He would work from sunrise to sunset, to the annoyance of his children who were forced to try to keep up with him.

Few people love their sports teams more than Curtis.&nbsp; Each weekend, he could be found watching his KSU Wildcats or Kansas City Chiefs, yelling at the referees or shouting, “Chiefs, baby!” at the top of his lungs.&nbsp; He also enjoyed grilling a mean steak, watching every Star Trek episode known to man, and remembered his love of music.&nbsp; His voice could move mountains, and all who heard him sing were blown away.&nbsp; In the mornings, he enjoyed obnoxiously waking his children by singing&nbsp;“Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!”&nbsp;at the top of his lungs.&nbsp; He was voted World’s Best Dad, as evidenced by his many mugs and t-shirts (except during his kids’ teenage years, when they dropped him a few notches).&nbsp; Curtis was also a man of great faith and cultivated a life-long relationship with the Lord; he studied Hebrew, sang in the choir, and read his Bible diligently.

Curtis is survived by his wife Jeanne Gamble of the home; sisters: Jacqueline Dodson of Topeka, KS, and Michaelle (Gamble) Warner of Overland Parks, KS; three children:&nbsp; Christi (Daniel) Gentry of Hiawatha, KS; Kathryn Gamble of Hiawatha, KS; Jonathan (Jaime) Gamble of Livermore, CA; five grandchildren:&nbsp; Sean, Faith, and Matthew Gentry, Damien Jackson, and Mariah Weathersby; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.&nbsp; Curtis is now reunited in paradise with his parents, Rowena and Edgar “Jack” Gamble, grandparents, and many cousins and friends.&nbsp; His faith, which carried him through his earthly troubles/struggles has been rewarded with an eternal glory.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November, 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha.&nbsp; Burial with military honors, a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, with follow services at Hiawatha Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Fisher Center.&nbsp;

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday.&nbsp; The family will meet with friends Friday evening from 6 until 7:30.

Memorial contributions are suggested to either Hope Brown County Cancer Fund or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th&nbsp;St., 66434.

Curtis Edward Gamble, of Hiawatha, passed away November 18, 2021 at the age of 64; he was surrounded by his wife and children after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.Curtis was born March 16, 1957, in Hiawatha, Kansas, to Rowena Elizabeth (Dixon) Gamble and Edgar Curtis Gamble.&nbsp; He attended Hiawatha schools, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track, setting multiple records that still stand today.&nbsp; After graduating from Hiawatha High school in 1975, Curtis attended Highland Community College before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Social Science from Kansas State University in 1982.After college, Curtis joined the U.S. Navy, where he reached the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.&nbsp; He served aboard the frigate&nbsp;U.S.S. Thomas E. Reed, 86, of St. Joseph, passed away November 20, 2021.&nbsp; 

Thomas was born July 28, 1935, in Kewanee, Indiana to Thomas Dale and Nelda Magnolia (Hogan) Reed.

Reed, 86, of St. Joseph, passed away November 20, 2021.&nbsp; Thomas was born July 28, 1935, in Kewanee, Indiana to Thomas Dale and Nelda Magnolia (Hogan) Reed.He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960; serving in the Special Forces.He graduated from Purdue University with a Degree in Electrical Engineering.&nbsp; He retired from General Dynamics Corp. in San Diego, CA, where he was an engineer, specializing in the guidance systems for the Atlas rockets.Thomas married Janice Blizzard on June 9, 1990 in Prescott Arizona and she survives.&nbsp; Also surviving are three sisters in San Diego, CA and nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Paula Bokay.He was a member of the Water Garden Society and had built his own water garden.&nbsp; He enjoyed horses and the beauty and anything to do with the outdoors.Memorial contributions may be made to the Patee House.Celebration of Life services will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Arrangements by Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.<figure>
